:01:14. > :01:17.Mediterranean trying to reach Europe for a better life, but what about
:01:18. > :01:23.those who do not make it and end up drowning in the sea are being washed
:01:24. > :01:28.up on shore? Our correspondent has discovered that 1700 men, women and
:01:29. > :01:34.children had been buried in unmarked graves in places like Turkey, Greece
:01:35. > :01:37.and Italy. He reports now from the Greek island of Lesbos, which has
:01:38. > :01:52.become the landing point for many migrants in Europe.
:01:53. > :01:54.A boat full of Syrians fleeing war land on Lesbos.
:01:55. > :01:58.No one on this boat drowned but one man was crushed to death on board.
:01:59. > :02:01.And another died of a heart attack when he set foot on land.
:02:02. > :02:04.Both victims were travelling with other people who are able
:02:05. > :02:09.But there are hundreds more who have either been lost at sea or found
:02:10. > :02:15.Their relatives scattered across the globe are left
:02:16. > :02:17.with a lingering pain that could haunt them
:02:18. > :02:23.In the last two years more than 8000 people have died
:02:24. > :02:29.On average at least one person each day has been buried
:02:30. > :02:34.Which you see on these red dots, scattered across Italy,
:02:35. > :02:40.More than 70 of these burial sites have been found as part
:02:41. > :02:48.The cemetery on Lesbos is one of them, with dozens of bodies.
:02:49. > :02:52.Some are recovered when the boats they were on capsized.
:02:53. > :02:57.Others wash up ashore days or even weeks later.
:02:58. > :03:04.Many relatives of the missing are desperately trying to find them.
:03:05. > :03:12.Farouk Pakar has been on such a quest for the last five months.
:03:13. > :03:15.His brother and wife died when their boat capsized off Lesbos
:03:16. > :03:18.but the bodies of their four children were never found.
:03:19. > :03:20.He has travelled hundreds of miles in Turkey and in Greece,
:03:21. > :03:23.hoping to find either proof of life or at least a DNA match
:03:24. > :03:37.with unidentified bodies of children buried in Lesbos.
:03:38. > :03:39.Local authorities in all three countries have been stretched
:03:40. > :03:42.as they try to deal with unidentified dead bodies.
:03:43. > :03:46.Because of the large number of bodies found by Greek authorities
:03:47. > :03:50.they have had to bring in containers like these.
:03:51. > :03:53.Sometimes the bodies of migrants stay here for days
:03:54. > :03:59.These containers are on the island of Samos, which does not
:04:00. > :04:27.Many of those who brave death to reach Europe leave relatives
:04:28. > :04:31.behind, with the hope of someday seeing them again.
:04:32. > :04:34.But those lost along the trail leave a darker kind of longing.
:04:35. > :04:42.No longer for reunion, only for closure.
:04:43. > :05:02.The Canadian city of Fort McMurray used to be known
:05:03. > :05:05.Now it's become famous as the city which had
:05:06. > :05:08.to evacuate its entire population, more than 80,000 people,
:05:09. > :05:12.It's now thought around 2000 homes have been burned to ground but it
:05:13. > :05:14.will be weeks before it's safe enough for people to return.
:05:15. > :05:18.The BBC's Laura Bicker was allowed into the city to see for herself how
:05:19. > :05:22.The fire has ripped away the flesh and fabric of this
:05:23. > :05:25.Once prized living rooms are now burnt out foundations.
:05:26. > :05:27.The flames have left little but twisted metal
:05:28. > :05:32.The grim aftermath of a frightening force of nature man
:05:33. > :05:38.You can see the remainder of family homes here, you can see that this
:05:39. > :05:41.was somewhere that people cherished, there is garden furniture,
:05:42. > :05:45.there are pieces of life which are now blackened
:05:46. > :05:57.Once the home of striving couples drawn to an oil-rich town,
:05:58. > :06:00.the panic and chaos of their flight to safety has been replaced
:06:01. > :06:06.This was a beast, it was an animal, it was like a fire I've
:06:07. > :06:13.Exhausted and emotional the chief wants residents to know
:06:14. > :06:16.he did all he could - but the fire did not
:06:17. > :06:19.This is rewriting the book, the way this thing
:06:20. > :06:25.They are rewriting the formulas on how fires behave
:06:26. > :06:34.The hospital, the schools, all untouched.
:06:35. > :06:36.But there is no power, no clean water, no gas supplies.
:06:37. > :06:40.The city will be abandoned for some time while officials
:06:41. > :06:46.And not far away the fire lingers in the forest, still
:06:47. > :06:51.threatening and, in places, still out of control.

:09:53. > :09:59.Chinese big business is falling into line and winning
