:00:17. > :00:21.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news: The

:00:21. > :00:26.Sun newspaper fights back. The newspaper denies that accessed

:00:26. > :00:34.the medical records of Gordon Brown's son. It says this man gave

:00:34. > :00:39.them the story. We felt it was too important. They had to know this

:00:39. > :00:45.had happened. In the last hour, the former Prime Minister has launched

:00:45. > :00:49.an astonishing attack on news International, accusing them of an

:00:49. > :00:55.-- criminal wrongdoing on an international scale.

:00:55. > :01:00.Cleared of blame for the mould of Kintyre helicopter crash. -- the

:01:00. > :01:02.Mull of Kintyre. 17 years after the tragedy which killed 29 men, the

:01:03. > :01:07.Government says sorry to the families of the pilots.

:01:07. > :01:11.Guilty. The woman who helped her lover hide his wife's body under

:01:11. > :01:18.the floorboards of the family home. And David will be here with the

:01:18. > :01:24.sport. Could Scotland's cricket players attain the lines of Sri

:01:24. > :01:28.Lanka? I will tell you later. Within the past hour, Gordon Brown

:01:28. > :01:32.has launched a blistering attack on news International in the house of

:01:32. > :01:37.Commons. He alleged that the organisation was guilty of law-

:01:37. > :01:45.breaking on in done at -- on an industrial sell. This came as the

:01:45. > :01:48.Sun newspaper hack back. The Sun newspaper released a video of a

:01:48. > :01:53.father of a child with cystic fibrosis who say it was their

:01:53. > :01:57.source. Gordon Brown in the Commons tonight

:01:57. > :02:05.turned his guns again on news International, owners of the Sun

:02:05. > :02:10.newspaper. He gave fuel -- full vent to his wrath. News

:02:10. > :02:15.International descended from the gutter to the sewers. The tragedy,

:02:15. > :02:18.Mr Speaker, is that the let the rats side of the Suez. Because of

:02:18. > :02:23.what happened to my children whose privacy at all times I have tried

:02:23. > :02:27.to protect, I have been sent, I've been offered and thrust upon me,

:02:27. > :02:34.what is now for the police to examine a great deal of evidence

:02:34. > :02:41.that is relevant to this debate. This morning, a screaming headline,

:02:41. > :02:45.half the front page. Today's paper hitting Bacchic Gordon Brown. The

:02:45. > :02:51.paper's is enraged with his claims that it had breached his younger

:02:51. > :02:57.son's privacy by revealing in 2006 that he has cystic fibrosis. The

:02:57. > :03:03.Sun newspaper denies attacked medical records. Their source, they

:03:03. > :03:09.say another father with a son with cystic fibrosis. The paper

:03:09. > :03:15.protecting his identity. It was sad to hear the news that his son had

:03:15. > :03:19.cystic fibrosis. A man of that calibre are can make a few phone

:03:19. > :03:23.calls and make things happen. I felt this was too important for up

:03:23. > :03:28.people with cystic fibrosis around the country. They had to know that

:03:28. > :03:34.this had happened. The Sun newspaper also claimed that story

:03:34. > :03:39.about Fraser Brown helped for donations with children with the

:03:39. > :03:43.condition. The cystic fibrosis Trust has issued the statement. The

:03:43. > :03:48.release of any medical information to the media or anyone else is a

:03:48. > :03:52.decision for patients or in the case of children their parents. The

:03:52. > :03:56.cystic fibrosis Trust does not condone the release of publication

:03:56. > :04:01.of such information without express permission regardless of their

:04:01. > :04:05.motivation. It was still smiles between the

:04:05. > :04:12.Browns and news International after the Sun's story. No one is smiling

:04:12. > :04:18.now. Watching that debate was our

:04:18. > :04:24.correspondent David Porter. Gordon Brown make the most of his moment?

:04:24. > :04:28.He spoke in the Commons for something like 30 minutes. He does

:04:28. > :04:35.not speak in the Commons very often since he ceased to be Prime

:04:35. > :04:39.Minister in May last year. He gave a very powerful speech and a

:04:39. > :04:46.stinging attack on news International, accusing them of

:04:46. > :04:50.getting into practices they should be accused of law-breaking on under

:04:50. > :04:55.a -- on an industrial scale. He said they push themselves as a

:04:55. > :04:58.group that was in support of law abiding citizens. At the end of the

:04:58. > :05:02.day they were on the side of people who were breaking the law rather

:05:02. > :05:06.than going with the law that they should be. He said he would be very

:05:06. > :05:10.happy to give any evidence to the inquiry that David Cameron is

:05:10. > :05:15.setting up. Perhaps ominously he also said that he thought they were

:05:15. > :05:19.far more victims who would be named in this will Saga.

:05:19. > :05:24.17 years after an RAF Chernick helicopter crashed on Mull of

:05:24. > :05:31.Kintyre killing all 29 people on board, the two pilots have been

:05:31. > :05:36.cleared of blame. A review has overturned an earlier inquiry which

:05:36. > :05:44.accuse them of gross negligence. Liam Fox apologise to the two men's

:05:44. > :05:47.families. It has been a long time coming but

:05:47. > :05:51.justice for two families finally arrive this afternoon. The

:05:51. > :05:57.culmination of a long fought campaign to clear two well-regarded

:05:57. > :06:05.pilots of blame and gross negligence. Today an apology from

:06:05. > :06:09.the top followed --. I have written to the two families to express the

:06:09. > :06:14.MoD's apology for the distress that was caused to them by the findings

:06:14. > :06:22.of negligence. I also wish to express that apology publicly in

:06:22. > :06:27.the house today. It is first class. It is extraordinarily good. They

:06:27. > :06:32.were among 29 people who were killed in 20th June -- 1994 when

:06:32. > :06:39.their helicopter crashed into this hillside. Also on board were 25

:06:39. > :06:45.senior intelligence experts. Two RAF air marshals disagreed,

:06:45. > :06:49.accusing the pilots. After a nine- month inquiry, a retired judge

:06:49. > :06:54.sitting with a panel of senior politicians has concluded that

:06:54. > :06:59.decision was wrong based on faulty legal advice. This is the report.

:06:59. > :07:04.It is less than 100 pages long and it has taken 16 years but it clears

:07:04. > :07:09.the two Highlands of blame for gross negligence. It accuses the

:07:09. > :07:16.MoD of intransigence, for failing to rectify this much sooner.

:07:16. > :07:19.Absolutely delighted. I was not expecting to get a much today to be

:07:19. > :07:27.honest. I just understood we would get an idea of what the report said

:07:27. > :07:31.and that was it. To get the fact that Liam Fox is supporting the

:07:31. > :07:37.recommendations and that they are making an apology is really much

:07:37. > :07:41.appreciated by both families. men's names have now been cleared.

:07:41. > :07:47.Their reputations restored. What caused the cash will never be known.

:07:47. > :07:52.But for the families, at last justice has been done.

:07:52. > :07:57.The number of people out of work in Scotland has fallen by 11,000 in

:07:57. > :08:02.the three months to May according to official figures. The number of

:08:02. > :08:06.people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance was over 140,000, a rise

:08:06. > :08:13.of 1,500 on the previous month. The First Minister welcomed the fall

:08:13. > :08:18.but said -- the STUC said many of the jobs are part-time and

:08:18. > :08:22.temporary. Still to come before seven: Join me

:08:22. > :08:27.to find out how this huge machine could tell Scotland win the race to

:08:27. > :08:32.harness the power of the world's oceans.

:08:32. > :08:36.In sport, it comes from the Grange in Edinburgh. Scollan's cricketers

:08:36. > :08:40.will try and tame the lines of Strang cut. We will be hearing from

:08:40. > :08:48.the Scots a golfer who says he has got what it takes to become the

:08:48. > :08:52.next Open champion. A woman has been convicted of

:08:52. > :08:56.helping her lover cover up the murder of his wife because she was

:08:56. > :09:01.besotted with him. The High Court in Edinburgh heard that 57-year-old

:09:01. > :09:07.Rita Heyster helped Harry Jarvis dumpers invalid's -- wife's body.

:09:07. > :09:12.It heard that during their affair, he had persuaded her to live in the

:09:12. > :09:17.garden shed. Jarvis murdered his wife and then

:09:17. > :09:22.he did something much worse. He also betrayed his own children over

:09:22. > :09:26.her death, subjected them to two agonising High Court trials and all

:09:26. > :09:31.to save his own skin. They emerge from court today having seen his

:09:31. > :09:37.girlfriend found guilty of helping their dad dispose of their mother's

:09:37. > :09:43.remains. It is bad enough losing one parent but losing two, after

:09:43. > :09:49.everything that has been said in court justice has been done as far

:09:49. > :09:53.as I'm concerned. At the family home, Harry Jarvis told his

:09:53. > :09:57.children their mother had moved to Dundee. An investigation by

:09:57. > :10:02.forensic officers revealed the true is much closer to home. This is the

:10:02. > :10:09.door to the space beneath the floor and where Harry Jarvis hit his

:10:09. > :10:12.wife's body, discarded next to an unwanted TV set. Rita Heyster, cha

:10:12. > :10:18.was's girlfriend at the time was living here in a shed in their

:10:18. > :10:22.garden. But while those actions seem dreadful enough, it was

:10:22. > :10:25.Jarvis's wised which caused the greatest harm to his children. Of a

:10:25. > :10:33.two trials in the High Court in Edinburgh and with interviews with

:10:33. > :10:37.the police, he conjured up many lies. But while he was lying in

:10:37. > :10:44.public, private letters to Rita Heyster demonstrated murderous

:10:44. > :10:50.intent. One read, drugs are doing job. Just took longer than I

:10:50. > :10:55.thought but going faster now. See you in paradise soon. He is a cold

:10:55. > :10:59.and calculating and cold individual. He thought he was going to get away

:10:59. > :11:04.with his murder. He has pleaded his innocence and came up with an

:11:04. > :11:08.excuse and the reason as to how his wife had died. Thankfully the jury

:11:08. > :11:14.saw through his lies and his deceit and found him guilty of murder.

:11:14. > :11:18.That is what he did. Despite weeks of evidence of a two files, the

:11:18. > :11:24.children now realise they may never find out what happened to the

:11:24. > :11:34.mother. Their father explained her death in three ways. Took Mac had

:11:34. > :11:38.been of them have sexual so activities gone wrong. -- two.

:11:38. > :11:42.An inquest into the death of a lame dog handler in Afghanistan has

:11:42. > :11:46.ruled he was unlawfully killed. The inquest heard that Lance Corporal

:11:46. > :11:56.Liam Tasker from Kirkcaldy were shot by insurgents. His stock is

:11:56. > :12:01.Springer spaniel called Theo died of the seizure afterwards.

:12:01. > :12:04.Scottish fishing leaders have warned that proposals for reform of

:12:04. > :12:08.the common fisheries policy could lead to a loss of more than 1000

:12:08. > :12:12.jobs in the industry and the scrapping of 400 votes. The

:12:12. > :12:19.European Commission says it wants to end overfishing and the dumping

:12:19. > :12:23.efficiency forcing skippers to land all their catch.

:12:23. > :12:27.This man regards himself as one of the thousands of victims of a

:12:27. > :12:32.discredited policy. He is now a driving instructor and Aberdeen.

:12:32. > :12:38.Before that he was the skipper. His business takes its name from his

:12:38. > :12:43.old vote. He hated the policy that changed his life. It was a total

:12:43. > :12:49.disaster. The impact it had was then a major business impossible to

:12:49. > :12:58.run. Because of the savage cuts and caught up. It was impossible to

:12:58. > :13:08.carry on with the business legally and still break-even. The common

:13:08. > :13:10.

:13:10. > :13:13.fisheries Prof slope -- Common Fisheries Policy has blamed. Today

:13:13. > :13:23.the European Commission warned that some stocks could banish without

:13:23. > :13:24.

:13:24. > :13:30.urgent action. -- vanish. Perhaps 10 years ago to close arise. We

:13:30. > :13:34.cannot do it any more because if we do ate, I would like to be clear

:13:34. > :13:38.about it, our children will see fish not in their plates but only

:13:38. > :13:42.in pictures. If the proposals are approved,

:13:42. > :13:47.there is to be more local management of stocks and a total

:13:47. > :13:51.ban on discards. Fishing leaders are deeply concerned. To quote from

:13:51. > :13:58.the commission's own impact assessment, a 20% downturn is the

:13:58. > :14:04.worst case Nadya. If you apply the mass, that is about 400 votes. And

:14:04. > :14:08.a possibility of 1000 jobs in the sector. It is not so long ago that

:14:08. > :14:13.harbours such as Peter Head were packed with votes. Today it is a

:14:13. > :14:18.very different story. The Scottish Government says a report still have

:14:18. > :14:24.a future but the new reforms do not go far enough and conservation

:14:24. > :14:27.Some of the other stories across Scotland this Wednesday...

:14:27. > :14:30.A man who saw two girls plunge to their deaths from the Erskine

:14:30. > :14:34.Bridge has told a Fatal Accident Inquiry how they fell backwards arm

:14:34. > :14:36.in arm like "divers going off a boat". Gary Cronin, a Ministry of

:14:36. > :14:39.Defence firefighter, was driving across the Erskine Bridge when 14-

:14:39. > :14:43.year-old Georgia Lowe and 15-year- old Neve Lafferty fell from the

:14:44. > :14:48.bridge in October 2009. Both were residents at the Good Shepherd care

:14:48. > :14:51.centre in Renfrewshire. The Hearts midfielder Ian Black is

:14:51. > :14:53.to stand trial for possession of cocaine. The 26-year-old's

:14:53. > :14:57.solicitor told Edinburgh sheriff court that his client intended to

:14:57. > :15:01.plead not guilty to the charge. It's alleged that Mr Black was

:15:01. > :15:04.found to be in possession of the drug at a city nightclub in May

:15:04. > :15:07.this year. Police investigating the murder of

:15:07. > :15:10.a teenage girl 25 years ago say they have had a "very encouraging"

:15:10. > :15:15.response to a TV appeal for information. Elaine Doyle was

:15:15. > :15:19.killed in Greenock in June 1986. Her body was found the next day in

:15:19. > :15:21.a lane yards from her home. Police said a reconstruction of her last

:15:22. > :15:31.movements, broadcast on the BBC's Crimewatch programme last night had

:15:31. > :15:35.generated more than 40 calls. It's been hailed as a major step

:15:35. > :15:38.forward for Scotland's renewable energy industry. It's a giant new

:15:38. > :15:42.wave energy device, known as the Oyster 800, and it was unveiled

:15:42. > :15:52.earlier today at a fabrication yard at Methil in Fife. Here's our

:15:52. > :15:53.

:15:53. > :15:56.Environment Correspondent. Tate Gaelic at the future of

:15:56. > :16:02.Scotland's wave energy industry. -- take a look at the future. They say

:16:02. > :16:06.it will be big. Very big. This huge device is bigger, stronger and more

:16:06. > :16:10.efficient than its predecessor. It is seen as a leader in the

:16:10. > :16:15.international race to harness the power of Scotland's seas and the

:16:15. > :16:20.seas right round the world. The first Oyster 800 was tested in the

:16:21. > :16:26.stormy seas off Orkney. Work is already under way there for the

:16:26. > :16:30.installation of its big brother, capable of generating 250% more

:16:30. > :16:33.power at one-third of the cost. are taking a major step forward

:16:34. > :16:39.demonstrating with this machine that you can produce continuous

:16:39. > :16:46.power in the ocean. This is a very important step for Marine Power and

:16:46. > :16:51.this industry. The device was built here in Fife and outside Stornoway.

:16:52. > :16:56.Industry experts concede they face daunting challenges, but believe

:16:56. > :17:01.exciting times lie ahead. Hold is the by Twenty20, this industry will

:17:01. > :17:05.be a major supplier of energy in Scotland. Critics argue it could be

:17:05. > :17:10.decades before that happens, but the first Minister, who unveiled

:17:10. > :17:14.the device, says Scotland is already at the top of the league.

:17:14. > :17:20.If a football team would be doing as well as a renewable energy

:17:20. > :17:26.industry, they would be in the top three in the world! But renewable

:17:26. > :17:30.energy, particularly Marine Energy, Scotland rules the waves. Capturing

:17:30. > :17:34.the power of Scotland's stormy seas is not going to be easy, but the

:17:34. > :17:36.prizes on the horizon. It's not often the weather plays

:17:36. > :17:46.ball with our sporting intentions, but David's been enjoying a fine

:17:46. > :17:48.

:17:48. > :17:53.day at Edinburgh's Grange. I have indeed. I am here where

:17:53. > :17:57.Scotland's cricketers were playing Sri Lanka - the World cub winners -

:17:57. > :18:01.in the Tri Nations series. A win for Scotland yesterday over Ireland

:18:01. > :18:05.meant that if the Scottish could beat the Sri Lankans today, they

:18:05. > :18:11.would win the series. Alas, it did not work out as planned. The

:18:11. > :18:20.Scottish were take -- chasing a total of 284, but they were

:18:20. > :18:24.skittled out by a world-class sure Lankan team for just 101 runs. Even

:18:24. > :18:34.that could not spoil what turned out to be a tremendous day in the

:18:34. > :18:35.

:18:35. > :18:39.sun for all the spectators here. They came from near and far, at sea

:18:39. > :18:49.dumping up hard cash to see one of the world's biggest teams. --

:18:49. > :18:52.

:18:52. > :18:57.stumping up hard cash. The view from here is not too bad, either!

:18:57. > :19:02.So, how come you're out here watching? We could not get in. It

:19:02. > :19:11.was sold out. But you get a beautiful view from here. Square on.

:19:11. > :19:20.Sunshine out. Yes. I came all the way from Glasgow to Edinburgh.

:19:20. > :19:24.is not far! Yes, but I like the game. For there is no rivalry and

:19:25. > :19:29.no sectarianism. Everybody is mingling and everybody is relaxed

:19:29. > :19:34.and just here for the love of the game. There are a couple of

:19:34. > :19:37.interesting spectators here. Here is the mother and father of Richard

:19:37. > :19:43.Derrington - the hero of the are for Scotland yesterday. How is he

:19:43. > :19:48.going to do today? He will probably be expecting the same and we will

:19:48. > :19:56.hope for the same ourselves. gentle jury cricket export.

:19:56. > :20:03.Definitely not. Ritchie has just gone out. He played brilliantly

:20:03. > :20:06.yesterday. Out for a duck? I think he was today, yes. Scotland did not

:20:06. > :20:16.to prevent the today, but the future of the game in this country

:20:16. > :20:19.

:20:19. > :20:24.is looking brighter. How is that?! I am joined by the

:20:24. > :20:28.Scotland coach. Where did it all go wrong? You were only playing the

:20:28. > :20:33.second best team in the world! was a tough day for us today. We

:20:33. > :20:37.did well on the field. We restricted them to 280, of which we

:20:37. > :20:43.were happy about. But they came out really hard. The first five or 10

:20:43. > :20:48.overs for a really difficult. suppose yesterday's win over

:20:48. > :20:53.Ireland was the highlight of the series. Was that which you were

:20:53. > :20:57.hoping for, going into the series? That when yesterday was fantastic.

:20:57. > :21:01.The Irish are ranked tenth in the world at the moment and it was an

:21:01. > :21:07.important win for us. To Chasetown 320 with nine balls to spare was a

:21:07. > :21:12.fantastic effort. We turned up today to cause an upset. We are

:21:12. > :21:17.disappointed at the way it went. But over all, be can take a lot of

:21:17. > :21:21.positives from it. Lessons for the future? We have to play more of big

:21:21. > :21:26.games of cricket against top teams like this. The more we play, the

:21:26. > :21:29.more we can adapt and react to what is happening in the game. Thank you.

:21:29. > :21:32.Commiserations today. Golf now and the Open championship

:21:32. > :21:35.gets under way at Royal St George's tomorrow, with six Scots hoping to

:21:35. > :21:38.lift the famous Claret Jug. Previous winners include Sandy Lyle

:21:38. > :21:48.and Paul Lawrie. Our reporter has been meeting another Scot who's

:21:48. > :21:53.

:21:53. > :22:02.hoping to emulate his countrymen. Some of the most recognisable faces

:22:02. > :22:07.in golf have made their annual trip to this course. And so has this man.

:22:07. > :22:12.I am not really sure if most of them know who I am! But more people

:22:12. > :22:19.than ever know the name after he claimed the last open spot at

:22:19. > :22:23.Castle Stuart. Has he done it? It looks good. Oh, well done! I did

:22:23. > :22:31.not know that it would get me in 100%, but if I missed it, I would

:22:31. > :22:35.not be here. Once I got in and they told me, it was a great feeling.

:22:35. > :22:39.The 27-year-old is in his rookie year on the European Tour, but has

:22:39. > :22:43.already risen around 300 places in the world rankings. He is one of

:22:43. > :22:47.six men flying the flag for Scotland in Kent. It has been an

:22:47. > :22:53.excellent season so far for the Glaswegian, but high Kenny to here

:22:53. > :22:59.against the best in the business? want to win. You have to shoot for

:22:59. > :23:05.the top. Obviously there's a lot of great golfers here. If I could be

:23:05. > :23:12.in contention on Sunday, but would be great. If he can tame the wind

:23:12. > :23:16.as he has done the Greens, who could do very well indeed.

:23:16. > :23:20.Let's hope he does. So the cricket might be over, but the golf is just

:23:20. > :23:23.beginning. Over the past few days, we've been

:23:23. > :23:26.reporting on the tall ships which left Greenock yesterday and will

:23:26. > :23:31.now sail around the west coast of Scotland before arriving in

:23:31. > :23:41.Shetland next week. But what is life on board the ships like? Our

:23:41. > :23:44.

:23:44. > :23:49.reporter joined the crew of the Wylde Swan to find out.

:23:49. > :23:54.Leaving Greenock with 22 trainees - this Dutch registered ship is

:23:54. > :24:01.reassured by the sight of crowds waving goodbye from the quayside.

:24:01. > :24:05.And they gathered there in their thousands. For these young sailors,

:24:05. > :24:10.a learning experience lies ahead. For some, that requires a strong

:24:10. > :24:16.head for heights, as the first cricket is sent to climb the

:24:16. > :24:20.rigging to unfurled a sale. It is terrifying. You have nowhere to put

:24:20. > :24:25.your hands. You just standing there on this little rope that is moving.

:24:25. > :24:31.You do not feel like you're attached to anything. You set the

:24:31. > :24:35.seal by hoisting on a halyard... This lady is not a race but the

:24:35. > :24:38.trainees are taught about sailing as if it was. That often involves

:24:38. > :24:43.hard work in conditions more challenging than this, but there

:24:43. > :24:47.are up for it. It is a fantastic experience. Just have a really good

:24:47. > :24:51.time and need some new people. There are people from different

:24:51. > :24:55.countries year, which is really interesting. The for those running

:24:55. > :24:59.the show, there was also a more serious message. For what we're

:24:59. > :25:05.trying to do is provide them the opportunity to discover themselves

:25:05. > :25:11.as much as anything else, to realise that there are chances in

:25:11. > :25:16.life which need to be faced and there is no better way of providing

:25:16. > :25:21.that opportunity than putting them in a hostile environment which is

:25:21. > :25:26.perceived. Many of these young trainees and the 200 or so who are

:25:26. > :25:35.on a full suite of ships have not sailed before. For them, it is

:25:35. > :25:41.about encouraging them to swap the Not such a bad week weatherwise for
