:00:18. > :00:22.Good evening from Reporting Scotland. Tonight, unemployment is

:00:22. > :00:27.up by 1,000. The first time it has risen since last autumn. The number

:00:27. > :00:31.of people in work is also up. Full analysis ahead.

:00:31. > :00:35.For Brad Pitt is in Glasgow and Glasgow comes out for Brad Pitt. We

:00:35. > :00:41.are live in the centre with the stargazers.

:00:41. > :00:45.Still waiting, still believing. The face of a father 30 years to the

:00:45. > :00:51.day after his daughter was lost in the Himalayas. -- faith. I do

:00:51. > :00:56.believe absolutely she will be found and I will see her.

:00:56. > :01:01.Back to school and on your bike. We visit the town which has managed to

:01:01. > :01:05.double the number of children cycling to class.

:01:05. > :01:09.Unemployment in Scotland has risen for the first time in nearly one

:01:09. > :01:14.year. It has gone up by 1,000. There was a rise in the number of

:01:14. > :01:17.people in work between May and June. Could this be a turn for the worse?

:01:18. > :01:21.According to the job market survey in April, May and June 1,000 more

:01:21. > :01:27.people were looking for work than during the previous three months.

:01:27. > :01:29.That takes the total up to 209,000 - the first rise since last autumn.

:01:29. > :01:36.To put it another way, the number claiming Jobseeker's Allowance,

:01:36. > :01:39.that was up 2,600 last month to nearly 145,000. On both those

:01:39. > :01:42.counts, the whole of the UK has seen surprisingly big rises in

:01:42. > :01:48.today's figures. Scotland can take some hope from the increased number

:01:48. > :01:52.of people in jobs - up by 24,000. That is in contrast with the fall

:01:52. > :01:55.in employment south of the border. One sector that explains why there

:01:55. > :02:04.is positive job growth in Scotland is energy, where big investment is

:02:04. > :02:09.planned. Switching jobs and switching on to

:02:09. > :02:13.an industry with a future. After 22 years in the RAF, this man has come

:02:13. > :02:19.down to earth, training as an engineer with Scottish Power.

:02:19. > :02:25.role I have now is a trainee engineer. I took a step down in

:02:25. > :02:30.terms of knowledge of the Industry and Scottish Power provided a

:02:30. > :02:33.training programme. That was the attraction. The company announced a

:02:33. > :02:43.3 billion of investment in the electricity grid across South

:02:43. > :02:44.

:02:44. > :02:49.Central Scotland. Over this decade, that means 1500 new recruits of all

:02:49. > :02:53.ages. I applied for various apprenticeships. Luckily, I got

:02:53. > :03:00.offered a job as a technician with Scottish Power. I have been with

:03:00. > :03:04.them since then. I have been here for two years. The plan is to build

:03:04. > :03:07.new links with turbines and customers. It means to deliver

:03:07. > :03:13.capacity for exporting power to England and importing electricity

:03:13. > :03:18.when the wind drops. We are going through an investment boom in this

:03:18. > :03:22.industry. None of that will happen without investment in networks

:03:22. > :03:26.because that is what is required to make it happen. Despite a weak

:03:26. > :03:30.economy, energy is one of sector with strong prospects for the First

:03:30. > :03:33.Minister wants to see more action. There's a clear message I am

:03:34. > :03:37.sending to the Chancellor, there has to be something about capital

:03:37. > :03:41.investment, we need more of it. We need more access for smaller

:03:41. > :03:47.companies and to grow economic security. We need to protect --

:03:47. > :03:51.protect people from high price rises. We cannot see the recovery

:03:51. > :03:56.blown off course. There is a lot buffeting the economy this summer.

:03:56. > :04:02.Today, we get retail figures, still looking flat, only food sales on

:04:02. > :04:06.the rise. The latest survey underlines on's debt problems, at a

:04:06. > :04:10.failing to keep up with inflation and with government spending,

:04:10. > :04:14.consumers and our trading partners battening down the hatches, it is

:04:14. > :04:19.much less clear where growth and recovery will come from and when.

:04:19. > :04:23.Shell has been giving details of how it plans to stop an oil leak in

:04:23. > :04:28.the North Sea which has been flooding for one week. They plan to

:04:28. > :04:37.raise her a -- blow up a section of pipeline to the seabed. There is a

:04:37. > :04:42.risk 600 tonnes of oil could spell. -- Lola a section. We would wish to

:04:42. > :04:46.stop the flow completely but from my point of view, I do not want to

:04:46. > :04:51.do anything that will compromise the entire pipeline and go from a

:04:51. > :04:55.situation where we have a quarter of a tonne to have a turn on the

:04:55. > :04:59.surface. Our reporter is outside their headquarters in Aberdeen.

:04:59. > :05:04.What exactly does this plan to stop the leak involve?

:05:04. > :05:08.At the moment, there is just a small amount coming out into the

:05:08. > :05:13.North Sea. The plan is to take that one, to stretch of pipeline where

:05:13. > :05:18.the leak is, that his four feet above the seabed, that has been

:05:18. > :05:22.raised to that level, how, we do not know, and lower it back down.

:05:22. > :05:26.Once it has been lowered, divers will go down there and they will

:05:26. > :05:33.manually switched off that Duvall. That is a very risky operation

:05:34. > :05:38.because a pipeline contains 600 tonnes of oil. The risk is there

:05:38. > :05:43.that 600 tonnes, which is contained, and leaking out slowly, if it goes

:05:43. > :05:47.wrong, it could all end up in the sea. The Government said the go-

:05:47. > :05:53.ahead will be given once the risks have been minimised. When is this

:05:53. > :05:57.likely to happen? Shell's plan is to do this over the next 24 hours.

:05:57. > :06:01.They do not have the final say. There is a risk assessment going on

:06:01. > :06:05.at the moment. The Government's representative, when he is

:06:05. > :06:10.satisfied the risk is minimised, will say, you can go ahead. If he

:06:10. > :06:15.says no, they will have to go back to the drawing board and that leak

:06:15. > :06:19.will continue to flow. Thank you. 30 years ago, a 19-year-old student

:06:19. > :06:23.from the Highlands disappeared while on a backpacking trip in the

:06:23. > :06:27.Himalayas. There has been no sign of Alison MacDonald since. Through

:06:27. > :06:32.many years, her father has insisted one day he will see his daughter

:06:32. > :06:37.again. That is even though he has lost his sight.

:06:37. > :06:44.For 30 years, Kenny MacDonald has looked for his daughter. The girl

:06:44. > :06:49.he remembers as a teenager would now be 49. The search goes on today.

:06:49. > :06:55.Even though he is 76 and his sight is almost gone. His belief is as

:06:56. > :07:00.strong today as it ever was. He believes he will find her. I have

:07:00. > :07:08.seen prayers in my search for Alison. Some would say it was a

:07:08. > :07:13.coincidence that I know much better, it was the Lord's hand and

:07:13. > :07:19.everything I can say about the whole business has been good. Apart

:07:19. > :07:26.from Alison has not come home. vanished in 1981 on a backpacking

:07:26. > :07:31.trip with a friend to Kashmir. No- one knows where she went and the

:07:32. > :07:40.search has ranged across the world. That meant 17 visits to India, we

:07:40. > :07:44.have been to Italy, Germany, Wales, England, all over the place. We

:07:44. > :07:49.have been following clues and people who were there at the time

:07:49. > :07:53.and people who were staying in the same guest house as her. We were

:07:53. > :08:00.trying to catch up. They came to believe she was still

:08:00. > :08:03.alive. They believed she is still with them. I remember her very

:08:03. > :08:10.clearly. I remember different situations we were in growing up

:08:10. > :08:13.and how she looked a what she did. She is not gone from our lives at

:08:13. > :08:18.all. Kenny MacDonald still waits for his daughter and still believes,

:08:18. > :08:23.even with a sliver of sight left, he will see her again. Alison has

:08:23. > :08:32.never been lost to him. It will be a surprise to everybody, I know,

:08:32. > :08:34.but I do believe, absolutely, that she will be found and I will see

:08:34. > :08:40.her. You are watching Reporting Scotland.

:08:41. > :08:45.Still to come: Why the start of term time it means a big problem

:08:45. > :08:49.for this festival production. In sport, as birds arrive in

:08:49. > :08:53.Scotland for tomorrow's night's game against Hearts. We will speak

:08:53. > :08:58.to both managers. One is in good feeling. We will hear from Rangers

:08:58. > :09:08.on the eve of the Europa League match. There is signing news from

:09:08. > :09:12.them and some from Celtic. Brad Pitt fans have been out in

:09:12. > :09:17.force in the centre of Glasgow all day trying to get a glimpse of him.

:09:17. > :09:22.He has been filming scenes for his latest movie, a zombie epic, which

:09:22. > :09:31.I presume you have heard about. Our reporter is in the centre. There is

:09:31. > :09:39.no sign of him? I would love to tell you I have been running from a

:09:39. > :09:44.zombies all day or Brad Pitt but if only! I turned out to try and get a

:09:44. > :09:48.glimpse of the man himself, I have to tell you the film crew have been

:09:48. > :09:52.very helpful and have cut the generators so you could hear me

:09:52. > :09:57.speaking to you from the edge of the set. I hope that has not dimmed

:09:57. > :10:02.the lights on Brad Pitt. He is the man in the spotlight they want to

:10:02. > :10:10.see. These girls came well prepared. The rare species they were looking

:10:10. > :10:18.out for? One Holyrood star of the good-looking variety. Brad Pitt. --

:10:18. > :10:24.Holyrood. I think our chances are slim. Did you want to come down

:10:24. > :10:27.here today, mum? A Yes. They were not alone. Cameras were clicked and

:10:27. > :10:35.for the ladies, though the props were interesting, they really

:10:35. > :10:39.wanted a glimpse of the star himself. I hoped to see Brad Pitt

:10:39. > :10:45.and perhaps the children as well. What do you think your chances are?

:10:45. > :10:49.Slim. He is busy filming. There is always a chance. You have to try.

:10:49. > :10:55.worked in the centre. Hopefully this will be a lunchtime routine

:10:55. > :10:59.for me. If you will be staking out? Absolutely. We believe this was

:11:00. > :11:05.Brad Pitt to being whisked off for lunch a short time later. When

:11:05. > :11:10.filming resumed, we managed to see a little of Philadelphia being shot.

:11:10. > :11:14.No proper sighting of the man everybody wanted to see. Maybe I

:11:14. > :11:22.could make it into the film myself? Then I would be bound to meet Brad

:11:22. > :11:31.Pitt. They have got in use than. To think they might need a reporter? -

:11:31. > :11:37.- do you think they might. It was a long shot. Any other ideas?

:11:37. > :11:42.friends got a picture of him from their office. He has been here.

:11:43. > :11:49.we have not found him. We were here last night about 2am. We heard he

:11:49. > :11:57.was filming at 3am. He was not. you go down the road, you will

:11:57. > :12:04.catch him. Hours of balancing on ladders finally paid off for the

:12:04. > :12:09.professional photographers who flooded Glasgow's streets today.

:12:09. > :12:14.I am quite used to standing outside court houses. I have never been

:12:14. > :12:24.stood here outside the United States' Cortes. That is part of the

:12:24. > :12:26.

:12:26. > :12:31.set they are filming. -- court house. I am not hanging about.

:12:31. > :12:35.Elgin businessman Nat Fraser is to face a retrial for the murder of

:12:35. > :12:39.his wife 13 years ago. It follows a decision by the Supreme Court in

:12:39. > :12:43.London which ordered his previous conviction for to be quashed. He is

:12:43. > :12:47.a joy to appear at the High Court in Glasgow in October.

:12:47. > :12:51.The Royal Bank of Scotland is to end access to cash machines owned

:12:51. > :12:54.by his rivals for some of its account holders. It will affect one

:12:54. > :12:59.million customers who have basic accounts. They will still get free

:12:59. > :13:02.withdrawals from RBS, Tesco, NatWest, and Post Office machines.

:13:02. > :13:06.Scotland's police forces are still hoping with the gun going operation

:13:06. > :13:10.in England following the riots. The Association of Chief Police

:13:10. > :13:14.Officers confirmed these police vans from Grampian Police were

:13:14. > :13:24.headed for London this morning. The association would not say how many

:13:24. > :13:25.

:13:25. > :13:31.officers were still involved in the It has been revealed Edinburgh has

:13:31. > :13:36.the highest occupancy rates and hotels in Europe. Spurs are ride in

:13:36. > :13:44.Scotland tonight. They cannot get aid remain the capital for their

:13:44. > :13:49.game against Hearts tomorrow. As Morag Kinniburgh reports, amid

:13:49. > :13:54.calls for her the building of more hotels, many locals are cashing in

:13:54. > :14:01.on the shortages by renting out their spare rooms online.

:14:01. > :14:11.But booking a big tent - Macbook -- booking a bed here is not easy.

:14:11. > :14:16.was trying to -- it was hard trying to the Kieran in January. People

:14:16. > :14:21.can have breakfast and dinner. Residents are cashing in. Renting

:14:21. > :14:26.spare rooms by the night using a online system. I was looking for

:14:26. > :14:31.something that I could do which was not a B&B. I am a full-time student

:14:31. > :14:37.and I work as well. This was a great way to supplement my income.

:14:37. > :14:43.I do not earn a great deal of money so this is tax free. It is a nice

:14:43. > :14:49.way to meet people, people come from all the world. Accommodation

:14:49. > :14:54.is almost at a premium in August. For the last two once, Edinburgh

:14:54. > :14:58.has a past London. Not only the major capital cities in Europe as

:14:58. > :15:04.well. There is a major investment opportunity year. Not only have

:15:04. > :15:14.occupancy rates gone up but the room rates have gone up as well.

:15:14. > :15:19.There is a major opportunity there for investment. There are still

:15:19. > :15:26.beds available for many opting to stay out of town. As well as more

:15:26. > :15:30.hotels being built, there are also website allowing people to campaign

:15:31. > :15:35.in gardens. Thousands of children went back to

:15:35. > :15:40.school today. How did they get there? By Stuart -- by a car, by

:15:41. > :15:47.bus or bye-bye? For one primary, the use of bicycles as increased by

:15:47. > :15:50.10 fault. Eleanor Bradford reports from Bishopbriggs.

:15:50. > :15:55.It is the first day of the new school term and you will not catch

:15:55. > :16:02.this family taking the car. Even four-year-old James joins the daily

:16:02. > :16:06.cycle to school. It started with my other son's first day at school.

:16:06. > :16:11.The school was surprised to see a child so young riding to school.

:16:11. > :16:21.They got behind it eventually and then they allowed him to cycle.

:16:21. > :16:23.

:16:23. > :16:31.Other kids wanted to learn as well. I like cycling. Here we set up a

:16:31. > :16:36.club on Tuesdays at the school here. This YouTube video completing the

:16:36. > :16:40.55 mile Edinburgh to Glasgow cycle ride persuaded the head teacher to

:16:40. > :16:47.encourage children of all ages to cycle to school. Now Bishopbriggs

:16:47. > :16:50.is becoming a town on two wheels. He came for home from school one

:16:50. > :16:55.day and asked if he could join the Cycle Club. We thought he should

:16:55. > :17:01.give it a go. We went along to their leisure centre. It was a full

:17:01. > :17:08.day. I was not looking forward to it! I enjoyed it more than he did.

:17:08. > :17:13.I cycled in Millport. Some are my friends did it last year. I cycle

:17:13. > :17:19.to the Transport Museum. Nationwide, only 2% of children cycle to school.

:17:20. > :17:24.But here in Bishopbriggs, it is on -- already three times that. And at

:17:24. > :17:34.the school it is 10 times. But for many parents, dangerous roads are

:17:34. > :17:41.the biggest worry. But he has even persuaded the council to lower the

:17:41. > :17:45.speed. A lot of our schools have 20 mph zones. We would like to take it

:17:45. > :17:50.further. Maybe parents will feel more confident that their children

:17:50. > :17:53.can cycle safely to school. In most of Scotland, the Government is well

:17:54. > :18:01.behind of getting more of us on bicycles. But Bishopbriggs issuing

:18:01. > :18:05.the rest of the country how it is done.

:18:05. > :18:11.Something different. An animal charity has rescued a cow in South

:18:11. > :18:17.airshow which got its head stuck in a ladder. It was spotted in a field

:18:17. > :18:21.beside the Troon to Barassie road last month. An inspector contacted

:18:21. > :18:26.the farmer and which was returned unharmed. The farmer had no idea

:18:26. > :18:30.how we got his head stuck in the ladder.

:18:30. > :18:35.Sport now with David. FI found a ladder in a field, I

:18:35. > :18:39.would put my head through it as well. As you may have seen earlier,

:18:39. > :18:45.the stars and Spurs have arrived in Scotland ahead of their Europa

:18:45. > :18:53.League game with hearts. Their manager insists they are taking the

:18:53. > :18:58.tie seriously. So our hearts even though the sound of laughter was

:18:58. > :19:05.echoing in their training ground today.

:19:05. > :19:10.It is not as striking as capita Angelina Jolie, but Romanov turning

:19:10. > :19:20.up at the training ground is unexpected. What was he doing?

:19:20. > :19:24.

:19:24. > :19:28.was a visit for us. He told me that he would like the players to play.

:19:28. > :19:38.Here is another Fannie one. Did you hear about these superstars who

:19:38. > :19:38.

:19:38. > :19:44.could not get a hotel room? festival is on this week. We could

:19:44. > :19:48.not get a hotel anywhere near. We are 45 minutes away but it is not

:19:48. > :19:58.the end of the world. It was a bit of a let-down battered baby shows

:19:58. > :20:02.that Spurs is treating heart seriously. Despite -- but at least

:20:03. > :20:11.it shows. While Harry Redknapp was talking, the other boss was keeping

:20:11. > :20:20.an eye on his team. But will he go with the romance of suggested line-

:20:20. > :20:24.up or on his own? No problem. He said... I always leave them

:20:24. > :20:33.laughing. Rangers have signed the American midfielder Alejandro

:20:33. > :20:37.Bedoya. He was up -- due to arrive in January. Rangers are in Slovenia

:20:37. > :20:42.for their Europa League game against Maribor. It takes on its

:20:42. > :20:50.extra significance because of the club's earlier disappointment.

:20:50. > :20:54.is comportment. -- important. This is the best thing for us. It is the

:20:54. > :21:01.same for the opposition as well. They are in the same boat. The

:21:01. > :21:05.Europa League gives us an opportunity to continue playing.

:21:05. > :21:09.Fraser Forster is back at Celtic and could even play in the euro by

:21:09. > :21:14.League match against see on tomorrow. The Newcastle goalkeeper

:21:14. > :21:21.who spent last year in Parkhead has signed another one year-long loan

:21:21. > :21:30.deal, subject to registration. A possible start for him, but who can

:21:30. > :21:37.see on sent onto the field? -- si Their confidence. According to

:21:37. > :21:42.Europa some of them cannot play. One man who falls into that

:21:43. > :21:48.category is a Celtic former Hearts defender. I think the club are

:21:48. > :21:54.sorting everything out and everyone is ready to play. In your head, you

:21:54. > :22:00.will play? Yes. Their manager thinks so too and seemed ambivalent

:22:00. > :22:04.about the controversy. His opposite number would care for some clarity.

:22:04. > :22:11.He may have to prepare for two things. You do not know what

:22:12. > :22:18.personal are going to be on the pitch. From our point of view, if a

:22:18. > :22:24.team player is not eligible, they should be punished accordingly.

:22:24. > :22:29.Lennon is hoping to have a familiar face in goal tomorrow. Fraser

:22:29. > :22:34.Forster has signed up for another year. He has been our main targets

:22:35. > :22:42.since the end of last season. We pity be done and it was knocked

:22:43. > :22:46.back. We have worked hard to bring a men. We're very pleased. So as

:22:46. > :22:54.signing ahead but who will turn out for this mess?

:22:54. > :23:04.That is a mystery and so is the fact that it was a cow that got his

:23:04. > :23:07.head stuck in a ladder? I thought it was a bullet.

:23:07. > :23:10.It is one of the most critically acclaimed shows on the Edinburgh

:23:10. > :23:17.Festival this year. Attend a sure about the workings of the human

:23:17. > :23:22.heart by teenagers for teenagers. - - attend or show. But the Glasgow
