:02:29. > :02:34.car. One punched him in the face. He suffered severe head injuries
:02:34. > :02:38.and died later in hospital. 16- year-old John Reid was sentenced to
:02:38. > :02:43.five years. Three other youths were convicted on lesser charges. The
:02:43. > :02:49.family is convinced they would have received a longer sentences if the
:02:49. > :02:54.Crown had been convinced this was a racist crime. Four times the family
:02:54. > :02:59.reported being assaulted. Some of those incidents were racist. The
:02:59. > :03:06.youths involved had a history of antisocial and raised his behaviour.
:03:06. > :03:13.But at the time, the family said they were deeply insulted because
:03:13. > :03:17.they felt the police had somehow it suggested... The consequences were
:03:17. > :03:21.severe. Several officers have been disciplined and police procedures
:03:21. > :03:28.and training have been changed. This is not the first time police
:03:28. > :03:31.have failed to tackle race hate crime. Following the Stephen
:03:32. > :03:36.Lawrence report a whole series of guidelines were implemented. It is
:03:36. > :03:40.unfortunate that again and again police officers on the ground
:03:40. > :03:49.failed to heed guidelines. That is unacceptable. It is a disgrace and
