:00:14. > :00:17.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news: The
:00:17. > :00:20.mother whose family were murdered in a deliberate fire as they slept,
:00:20. > :00:30.tells of the moment she finally accepted her husband and children
:00:30. > :00:31.
:00:31. > :00:36.were dead. I think it was my sister and what's
:00:37. > :00:45.face that made it. I thought, this is true. Today, Angela Sharkey
:00:45. > :00:49.appeals for help to find whoever murdered her family.
:00:49. > :00:54.The price of a degree for students in England that one Scottish
:00:54. > :00:57.university. Here come the Household Cavalry -
:00:57. > :00:59.the world famous regiment are in Scotland to perform one of their
:00:59. > :01:02.celebrated displays. And what's gone wrong with Scottish football?
:01:02. > :01:05.We look back at a disastrous night in Europe for our clubs.
:01:05. > :01:08.A woman whose husband, son and daughter were murdered in a house
:01:08. > :01:11.fire in Helensburgh last month says she's lost the three people she
:01:11. > :01:15.loved most in the world. Angela Sharkey and her family were asleep
:01:15. > :01:19.when their home was deliberately targeted in an early morning attack.
:01:19. > :01:23.Mrs Sharkey was critically injured and has only just been allowed home.
:01:23. > :01:26.She lost all her family - her husband Tommy, her son, Thomas, and
:01:26. > :01:36.eight-year-old Bridget. She's been telling Aileen Clarke about the
:01:36. > :01:38.
:01:38. > :01:42.night before the murders. Then it was a normal night. Bridget had
:01:42. > :01:47.been at a friend's for a sleep over but she did not really do sleep
:01:48. > :01:54.over as well. At 10pm, the phone rang and it was her friend's that
:01:54. > :02:00.saying she was not settling, I will bring her home. Thomas was in bed
:02:00. > :02:09.because he was coughing in the morning. My husband was a cross at
:02:09. > :02:14.the local pub for a pint. It was just a normal night. And when did
:02:14. > :02:23.you become aware of the fire? What are your recollections? Absolutely
:02:23. > :02:27.nothing. My next recollection, I think it was, three weeks later,
:02:27. > :02:34.two and a half weeks later in intensive care. My sister actually
:02:34. > :02:44.told me four times that Thomas, Bridget and Tommy were all dead.
:02:44. > :02:48.
:02:48. > :02:55.Each time I was like, don't be daft. One day I thought, this is true.
:02:55. > :02:59.That what may be realise it was happening. She was just right in
:02:59. > :03:04.the middle of everything, everywhere. Typical girl. She had
:03:04. > :03:09.everybody where she wanted them. I don't know what it was about her,
:03:09. > :03:17.she was just brilliant. Everybody thinks their kids are brilliant but
:03:17. > :03:21.she was. He loved his golf, he was doing brilliantly. I'll never know
:03:21. > :03:27.how well he could have done, because he was going for it. He
:03:27. > :03:34.only ever wanted to be a golfer from one he was a young boy. Do you
:03:34. > :03:40.have any ideas as to who could be responsible? If I had any idea, and
:03:40. > :03:47.reason, a motive, anything - I would say. There are three things I
:03:47. > :03:52.loved the most in my life are dead. My daughter should be in primary
:03:52. > :03:56.five, my son should be back playing golf in America. Thomas should be
:03:56. > :04:03.going to his work, I should be going to my work. None of that is
:04:03. > :04:09.happening. I don't know how someone can carry on with their life
:04:09. > :04:12.knowing that they have done this. Mrs Sharkey was speaking to our
:04:12. > :04:15.reporter Aileen Clarke, who's in Helensburgh now. A harrowing story.
:04:15. > :04:25.How hopeful are the police that this will persuade somebody to come
:04:25. > :04:29.
:04:29. > :04:34.forward with information? Well, of the police are sincerely hoping
:04:34. > :04:38.that that this will help. What they are hoping is that somebody will
:04:38. > :04:42.see this interview with Angela Sharkey and it will prick their
:04:42. > :04:48.conscience. The police remain absolutely convinced that the
:04:48. > :04:55.answer to what happens here lies a and this Helensburgh community. I
:04:55. > :04:59.understand the main line up of the investigation is still Mr Sharkey's
:04:59. > :05:03.business dealings. Regardless of whether we ultimately establish
:05:03. > :05:09.whether somewhere in Mr Sharkey's past lies the motive for this
:05:09. > :05:16.attack, we have seen Angela Sharkey and how devastated she is. We have
:05:16. > :05:20.seen as she has lost her husband, 18 -- eight-year-old daughter and
:05:20. > :05:29.21-year-old son. Misplaced loyalty should not come into it. Someone
:05:29. > :05:32.must know what happened. None of us can have any idea what it took for
:05:32. > :05:36.Angela Sharkey to sit down today in front of a television camera and
:05:36. > :05:40.speak about what happened to her family. None of us can imagine what
:05:40. > :05:44.it is like to be in that position. She had the courage to do so and it
:05:44. > :05:49.was an immense effort. This is a woman who has lost everything that
:05:49. > :05:52.was the rest in the world to her, and tonight, she and the police
:05:52. > :05:55.will be hoping that her huge effort top pay off.
:05:55. > :05:58.Aberdeen University is to charge English students 9,000 a year in
:05:58. > :06:03.tuition fees. It's the same as the maximum amount English universities
:06:03. > :06:06.are allowed to charge for their courses. But the University is
:06:06. > :06:10.offering a four-year degree for the price of a three-year degree -
:06:10. > :06:20.27,000. The move signals a new era for Scottish higher education, as
:06:20. > :06:20.
:06:20. > :06:26.our Education Correspondent Seonag Mackinnon reports.
:06:26. > :06:31.Joy at graduation, but at what cost. Nothing for Scots, but a hefty hike
:06:31. > :06:34.for those from England, Wales and Northern Ireland. I have a friend
:06:34. > :06:40.who is from England and she is in so much debt anyway at the basic
:06:40. > :06:43.fee. I'd pay higher fees but I do think they will have to raise the
:06:43. > :06:49.fees for English students so that Scottish students have access to
:06:49. > :06:55.the schools here. These students -- fees for students and the rest of
:06:55. > :07:02.the UK now stand at 3,000 a year. At Aberdeen, that will soon be
:07:02. > :07:05.9,000. With extensions and grants, the total was 27,000. The same
:07:05. > :07:10.fears down south. Ministers' meeting this afternoon said they
:07:10. > :07:16.had no choice. Quite simply, the current situation of English
:07:16. > :07:19.students paying only 120 to come to Scotland is not tenable. That is
:07:19. > :07:25.why we have to reflect decisions that were made in England and our
:07:25. > :07:31.fees for students from the rest of the UK. The Scottish government has
:07:31. > :07:33.asked us to do that. On paper, the fees will bring in 19 million. But
:07:34. > :07:39.with some money going to the Scottish government and a potential
:07:39. > :07:46.drop in student numbers, the bottom line could be five or 6 million.
:07:46. > :07:50.For student leaders, this is a bitter pill to swallow. It is a
:07:50. > :07:53.very difficult decision the universities have been put in, by
:07:53. > :07:56.Westminster and the Scottish government. It is a difficult
:07:56. > :08:01.decision but we remain fundamentally opposed to fees and
:08:01. > :08:05.bullied and the education. offer, pay for three years and get
:08:05. > :08:11.one year for me, mean English students pay no more than at home.
:08:11. > :08:17.The headline figure of 9,000 each year takes Scottish education into
:08:17. > :08:19.uncharted territory. You're watching Reporting Scotland
:08:19. > :08:26.from the BBC. Still to come before seven.
:08:26. > :08:31.How plans to mine for gold in these hills have taken a step forward.
:08:31. > :08:36.And in sport, as Scottish that all this is a collective hangover after
:08:36. > :08:40.last night's European do battle, we remember the glory days and ask
:08:40. > :08:43.what's gone wrong with the national game. We also look at why Celtic
:08:43. > :08:46.might get back into their Europa League.
:08:46. > :08:48.As David says, a little later he'll be exploring why Scottish football
:08:48. > :08:50.has plumbed the depths. But first, Alasdair Lamont examines what
:08:50. > :09:00.damage these embarrassing eliminations will mean for football
:09:00. > :09:05.finance, and our sporting reputation.
:09:05. > :09:09.They did abjection and anger was palpable last night, as Scotland's
:09:09. > :09:13.European representatives took a tumble. Now, time to count the cost
:09:13. > :09:17.of failure. When you take away European football you're focusing
:09:17. > :09:22.on domestic football, and that is likely to have a detrimental impact
:09:22. > :09:25.on attendances in the immediate term. If the cycle is repeated,
:09:25. > :09:34.that may be a long-term threat. That is worrying because that is
:09:34. > :09:38.what they need as their core and comfort up -- income. It is not
:09:38. > :09:41.purely financial. The whole of Scotland wanted the teams to do
:09:41. > :09:46.well last night, and it is disappointing. Supporters a
:09:46. > :09:50.tremendously loyal to their clubs, and they will continue to go out
:09:50. > :09:53.and support their clubs, I have no doubt about that. Hopefully, all of
:09:53. > :09:58.us can come together as a nation and support the national team a
:09:58. > :10:02.week tomorrow. The national team is experiencing something of a
:10:03. > :10:08.renaissance, but is the outsider's perception of Scottish football as
:10:08. > :10:13.a whole and negative one. Scotland will probably, because of fewer
:10:13. > :10:22.people and less money, the second rate, as indeed almost to the clubs
:10:22. > :10:27.in England, including the one I support. They are quite similar
:10:27. > :10:31.teams, but ours look better in terms of style. Football is all
:10:31. > :10:36.about money but you probably need a few more foreign oligarchs or
:10:36. > :10:43.criminals to come and by Scottish football clubs. Money does seem to
:10:43. > :10:48.be a recurring theme, but what may make the Scottish Football
:10:48. > :10:52.Association believes is bidding plans in place is in this document.
:10:52. > :10:54.Hopefully, it will address some of the game's bells in the medium and
:10:54. > :10:56.long-term. The decision to halt the
:10:56. > :10:58.controversial Edinburgh tram line at Haymarket will cost the city
:10:58. > :11:01.millions of pounds. Edinburgh's transport convener says that's
:11:01. > :11:05.because current costings don't include the building of a terminus
:11:05. > :11:08.station in that part of the city. As Gavin Walker reports, the news
:11:08. > :11:11.that the trams won't now come into the city centre has shocked many
:11:11. > :11:19.people in the capital, including some of the councillors who voted
:11:19. > :11:22.for it. Yesterday's decision with such a
:11:22. > :11:27.surprise even a councillor who proposed it seemed stunned to have
:11:27. > :11:30.one. I am a bit shocked to be honest. I thought it would be the
:11:30. > :11:35.same as last month when each of the political groups when their own way.
:11:35. > :11:39.She was not the only one to be taken aback. The whole thing is
:11:39. > :11:43.just a white elephant. In a long term, it will disappoint a lot of
:11:43. > :11:48.people. The council must now overcome a series of challenges.
:11:48. > :11:53.First, the contract. The council has until next Thursday to provide
:11:53. > :11:56.finalised plans and funding proposals for the new writ. If not,
:11:56. > :12:03.the contractor could claim a breach of contract and sue for the full
:12:03. > :12:09.amount owed. The council say a bid deadline cannot be met. We can get
:12:09. > :12:13.an agreement in principle hopefully, but as I say, it depends on other
:12:13. > :12:18.things and we have to do a lot of work on the detail between now and
:12:18. > :12:22.then in order to get there. It has emerged that and actors may
:12:22. > :12:26.consider extending the deadline although it is not known until then.
:12:26. > :12:31.Each and every week until Thursday without a full resumption will
:12:31. > :12:35.increase the cost of the project by 300,000. He has also been
:12:35. > :12:37.political fall-out and question over the future of party leaders
:12:37. > :12:41.within the Council and also over the future of the ruling coalition
:12:41. > :12:45.there. The question has come as council leaders face one of the
:12:45. > :12:51.biggest challenge is over prams - meetings to deliver the new term
:12:51. > :12:54.targets under way. Finally, the issue of the city's reputation. The
:12:54. > :12:59.business case was at the heart of Tam proposals with hopes of
:12:59. > :13:04.boosting the city's damage. Leaders now believe that is unlikely.
:13:04. > :13:09.is important now is to try to salvage the pram project. To ensure
:13:09. > :13:15.it is delivering not just to Haymarket but beyond that in time.
:13:15. > :13:20.If we do not do that, there is damage to the city's a reputation
:13:20. > :13:25.and a country's reputation. September 1st was to be this end of
:13:25. > :13:29.the delays and the restart of pram work, instead it will signal the
:13:29. > :13:31.start of a new uncertain chapter. Some of the other stories this
:13:31. > :13:35.Friday. The whereabouts of the Lockerbie bomber remain a mystery
:13:35. > :13:37.as violence continues in Libya. It's been reported that Abdelbaset
:13:37. > :13:40.al-Megrahi may have fled his home in Tripoli as Colonol Gaddaffi's
:13:40. > :13:47.regime crumbles. A provision of his compassionate release was that he
:13:47. > :13:50.stay in contact with officials in A provision of his compassionate
:13:50. > :13:53.release was that he should stay in contact with officials in Scotland.
:13:53. > :13:55.Councillors have voted against closing or downgrading any of the
:13:55. > :13:58.96 fire stations in the Highlands and Islands, despite difficulties
:13:58. > :14:01.in recruiting firefighters in some of the smallest island communities.
:14:01. > :14:11.By it is hoped a recruitment drive could boost the number of islanders
:14:11. > :14:27.
:14:27. > :14:32.prepared to sign up as part-time The price of gold continues to
:14:32. > :14:36.roses, and that is good news for one of the village.
:14:36. > :14:39.After a wobble this week, the price of gold is on the up again. Good
:14:39. > :14:42.news for speculators who want to mine for gold in Loch Lomond and
:14:42. > :14:45.the Trossachs National Park. Scotgold says there is money to be
:14:45. > :14:48.made in the hills near the village of Tyndrum in the southern
:14:48. > :14:51.Highlands. And now it looks as if its plans to open a mine there
:14:51. > :15:01.could come to fruition. Scottish Natural Heritage, which had opposed
:15:01. > :15:01.
:15:01. > :15:07.the scheme, now says it is likely to withdraw its objection. We have
:15:07. > :15:13.reduced the size of the facility and we will store some of the
:15:13. > :15:21.material under ground and expanded on the techniques we are going to
:15:21. > :15:31.use to ensure that the site retains a natural look after we have
:15:31. > :15:34.
:15:34. > :15:40.finished. The plan to extract 20 of gold and half of that in silver.
:15:40. > :15:47.It is what happens to be discarded silt which is left that is
:15:47. > :15:51.concerning environmental groups. The application last year was
:15:51. > :16:00.flawed in our respect. The one before has this time is a lot
:16:00. > :16:07.better. There are still a few minor points to be resolved. The is
:16:07. > :16:12.overwhelming local support. There is a lot of concern over
:16:12. > :16:19.environmental aspects and there has been a big improvement since the
:16:19. > :16:26.first proposal. If they can convince the authorities that they
:16:26. > :16:30.will leave the site unblemished after the work, then the first
:16:30. > :16:32.commercial gold mine in Scotland could end up being one of the
:16:33. > :16:36.world's greenest. The Household Cavalry are in
:16:36. > :16:39.Scotland this weekend. For the first time in ten years, the world
:16:39. > :16:48.famous soldiers and their horses will perform one of their
:16:48. > :16:54.celebrated musical ride displays. They do like their horses in the
:16:54. > :16:58.Borders and this is something very special. The Blues and Royals of
:16:58. > :17:04.the Household Cavalry. Each man and horses selected for specialist
:17:04. > :17:11.training. When they are good enough, they can take part in this - the
:17:11. > :17:21.regiments famous musical drive. It is a series of manoeuvres that
:17:21. > :17:24.
:17:24. > :17:26.dates back 200 years. They will relate to battlefield movements.
:17:26. > :17:30.Moving of the beats is again something they would have to do on
:17:30. > :17:39.the spot. They have they cannot be delayed, because one follows the
:17:39. > :17:45.other. Behind all the pomp and ceremony is a lot of hard graft.
:17:45. > :17:54.There is a lot lot of spit and polish needed. And those who get
:17:54. > :18:04.there in the end will look like this. With the book's been waxed
:18:04. > :18:04.
:18:04. > :18:11.solid, there is no feel. There is a lot to taking. The horsemanship
:18:11. > :18:16.will be on display here on Sunday. They will also parade in Kelso on
:18:16. > :18:19.Saturday. They have also agreed to be a bride of honour at the local
:18:19. > :18:25.wading. Now which you choose next summer -
:18:25. > :18:28.the London Olympics or the Edinburgh Festival? Well, there are
:18:28. > :18:30.concerns that next year's Festival could lose out on audiences, ticket
:18:30. > :18:40.sales and even backstage staff. But as Pauline McLean reports,
:18:40. > :18:40.
:18:40. > :18:45.Edinburgh is already making plans. For many people, Edinburgh Festival
:18:45. > :18:52.is the Cultural Olympics. By next summer, they will face a real
:18:52. > :18:58.competition when London hosts the Olympic Games. The yes, we would of
:18:58. > :19:01.course encourage people to watch the elite sports people from all
:19:01. > :19:08.over the world and then we would hope that people would come to
:19:08. > :19:15.Edinburgh to see the up and coming people in the culture. So, support
:19:15. > :19:21.people in London and then come up here. By not everyone is so
:19:21. > :19:31.convinced. Organisers are worried in particular that the East 1,000
:19:31. > :19:35.
:19:35. > :19:39.volunteers they used each year it will be depleted. If we have a lot
:19:39. > :19:43.of rain, there is no doubt that people will be focused on the
:19:44. > :19:48.Olympics. But then again, there is going to be so many extra visitors
:19:48. > :19:58.coming to the United Kingdom that it it also presents as a great
:19:58. > :20:01.
:20:01. > :20:09.opportunity. This is speed of light, which involves 5,000 people running
:20:09. > :20:15.across Arthur's Seat. I think the Olympics are not just about sport.
:20:16. > :20:24.It is an area that can needs with the arts. Swimming and horse-riding
:20:24. > :20:30.are both movement and art. A and the festival asked Gearing up for
:20:30. > :20:40.the challenge. Tickets are going to go on sale earlier and marketing
:20:40. > :20:41.
:20:41. > :20:44.next year's event is already under way. Us get
:20:44. > :20:48.As Scottish football counts the cost of the failure in Europe, it
:20:48. > :20:50.is maybe time to reflect on where it has all gone wrong. Every one of
:20:50. > :20:54.our representatives in European competition has been knocked out
:20:54. > :20:57.and it is not even the end of August - the first time that has
:20:57. > :21:05.ever happened. Their national team manager says it is all down to
:21:05. > :21:13.money, but not everyone agrees. Images from the glory days of
:21:13. > :21:23.Scottish football. Lisbon in 1967 and Barcelona in 1972 and Sweden in
:21:23. > :21:25.
:21:25. > :21:33.1983. Let us just say, at this here could not compare. Celtic lost 3-1
:21:33. > :21:40.in Switzerland. We have to be realistic about things. We are not
:21:40. > :21:47.where we want to be in terms of European football. Rangers also
:21:47. > :21:52.went out. It was a very disappointing night for Scottish
:21:52. > :22:02.football, of that there is no doubt. They were doubtless be enquiries as
:22:02. > :22:03.
:22:03. > :22:07.to why we have all done so well in Europe. The amount of money
:22:07. > :22:15.available for the managers nowadays is negligible. The quality of
:22:15. > :22:25.players that you can sign dictates how far you will goal in Europe.
:22:25. > :22:25.
:22:25. > :22:31.is a all down to money? I Braeside Shamrock Rovers have needed to be
:22:31. > :22:41.League stages of the Europa League. Compare their turnover to that of
:22:41. > :22:41.
