:00:15. > :00:18.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news: Not

:00:18. > :00:23.proven - the case against hearts fan accused of a sectarian attack

:00:23. > :00:33.on Celtic manager Neil Lennon. But John Wilson is found guilty of

:00:33. > :00:33.

:00:33. > :00:36.breach of the peace. This criticism of thousand Crown Office handled

:00:36. > :00:41.the case. The gap widens between how much we drink in Scotland

:00:41. > :00:48.compared with people in England and Wales. And how much wine would you

:00:48. > :00:52.drink in a week? About two bottles. More than you're supposed to.

:00:52. > :00:55.I didn't think it was that much. The figures come as people in

:00:55. > :01:03.Glasgow are warned they could lose their homes if they don't control

:01:03. > :01:08.their children's underage drinking. Also ahead tonight: I'm live in the

:01:08. > :01:13.Borders where thieves are stealing manhole covers and it is costing

:01:13. > :01:16.tense of thousands of pounds and putting lives at risk. And in sport,

:01:16. > :01:20.we'll have the latest comings and goings as the clock counts down on

:01:20. > :01:23.the final hours of the transfer window. A fan who ran on to the

:01:23. > :01:25.pitch at Tynecastle last May and punched the Celtic manager Neil

:01:25. > :01:28.Lennon has been cleared of sectarian assault. John Wilson

:01:28. > :01:32.admitted in court that he did assault Mr Lennon that night, but

:01:32. > :01:42.the jury found the charges against him not proven. He was convicted of

:01:42. > :01:46.

:01:46. > :01:55.a breach of the peace. The jury also removed a charge that that was

:01:55. > :02:00.motivated by religious prejudice. The hand shakes hid tension, there

:02:00. > :02:06.was haudge pressure on this tie. Every point crucial in the last few

:02:06. > :02:13.games of season. The mood was said to be volatile and poisonous.

:02:13. > :02:18.Hooper! Scores again! When Celtic scored, Hearts fan John Wilson went

:02:18. > :02:24.mad. He ran on to the pitch, charged at the away team dug out

:02:24. > :02:29.and lunged at Neil Lennon. In the witness stand, John Wilson admitted

:02:29. > :02:35.shouting and swearing at Neil Lennon and admitted hitting him.

:02:35. > :02:42.But the jury found the charge of assault not proven. And they

:02:42. > :02:46.accepted his denials that he utter words of Lynnous nature. These

:02:46. > :02:50.cases are difficult to prosecute and has been demonstrated, even

:02:50. > :02:54.when you have a high visibility offence with many witnesses and the

:02:54. > :02:59.offence in front of television cameras, bringing the religious

:02:59. > :03:04.element into the charge may have been a mistake. 26-year-old John

:03:04. > :03:09.Wilson said his dad's a Catholic and testifyed he has had his

:03:09. > :03:16.daughter christened a Catholic and said he condemned sectarianianism.

:03:16. > :03:22.Security manager, Peter Croy said he heard John Wilson swear and

:03:22. > :03:28.shout sectarianian abuse. But John Wilson denied this and said Mr Croy

:03:28. > :03:33.may have misheard one syllable. John Wilson has written an apology

:03:33. > :03:40.to Len. The incident followed death threats to Neil Lennon. Hearts say

:03:40. > :03:43.wills wis was banned for life. -- John Wilson. Wilson remains in

:03:43. > :03:52.custody and he has been found guilty of breach of the peace and

:03:52. > :03:55.will be sentenced later. Reevel Alderson joins us now. This verdict

:03:55. > :04:02.might seem incredible to many people. Because according to the

:04:02. > :04:08.outcome, there was no assault. Absolutely. It is a very strange

:04:08. > :04:12.verdict. Yes, John Wilson admitted breach of the peace and has been

:04:12. > :04:17.convicted. In terms of the assault. Let's look at the evidence. Which

:04:17. > :04:24.we saw in the report. But let's look again. John Wilson comes on to

:04:24. > :04:29.the pitch. He runs along the touch line and he attacks Neil Lennon.

:04:29. > :04:34.That is as clear a case of assault as you can possibly imagine. It

:04:34. > :04:38.took place in front of 16,000 people and in front of thousands of

:04:38. > :04:43.television viewers and many more people have witnessed it. So why

:04:43. > :04:48.did the jury come to this verdict? Well they had two charges, breach

:04:48. > :04:54.of the peace and assault. In each case, there was a suggestion that

:04:54. > :04:57.these were aggravated by racial prejudice. Sectarianian prejudice.

:04:57. > :05:01.The jury deleted that from the breach of the peace charge. They

:05:01. > :05:07.said it was a breach of the peace N temperatures of the assault they

:05:07. > :05:12.took that out and then found John Wilson not proven on that charge.

:05:12. > :05:17.They have acquitted. It is an incredible verdict and puzzled many

:05:17. > :05:21.lawyers. What does the verdict say about the Scottish Government's

:05:21. > :05:27.attempts to crackdown on sectarianianism? The Government

:05:27. > :05:33.said they would legislate quickly, then they decided a -- to hold back.

:05:33. > :05:40.I'm sure they are glad, because the world has seen an asaut in a match,

:05:40. > :05:43.which the courts cannot bring a conviction on. Thank you. Scots are

:05:43. > :05:47.drinking a lot more pure alcohol every year than the English and

:05:47. > :05:50.Welsh and the gap is getting bigger. In fact, on average, every year, we

:05:50. > :05:53.drink 2.2 litres more than people in the rest of Britain. But new

:05:53. > :05:55.figures from the NHS suggest the problem drinkers might not be who

:05:55. > :06:03.you'd expect. Our Health Correspondent, Eleanor Bradford, is

:06:03. > :06:07.with me with more. Scotland still has a drink problem, but it's not

:06:07. > :06:12.the people you might expect who are fuelling it. Sales of beer, cider,

:06:12. > :06:15.and fortified wine have actually fallen since the mid-1990's. Sales

:06:15. > :06:22.of alcopops and ready-mixed drinks have also fallen since they hit the

:06:22. > :06:26.market a decade ago. Sales of spirits have remained constant.

:06:26. > :06:31.It's wine that has seen the boom in sales. Sales have more than doubled

:06:31. > :06:34.over a decade-and-a-half. What we're also seeing is a big rise in

:06:34. > :06:38.people buying booze, especially wine, to drink at home. Off sales

:06:38. > :06:48.have increased by half. So is it wine quaffing respectable people

:06:48. > :06:54.

:06:54. > :07:01.who are now Scotland's problem drinkers? I think the more people

:07:01. > :07:07.are drinking wine. And less spirits. The taste of it, generally eating

:07:07. > :07:14.and drirching is a big part of what we do. -- drinking. It mixes well

:07:14. > :07:20.with food. How much wine would you drink? In a week? About two bottles.

:07:20. > :07:24.More than you're supposed to. really? I didn't think it was that

:07:24. > :07:29.much. That according to one charity, is part of the problem. Tfrpblgt

:07:29. > :07:34.focus is frequently on young people -- The focus is frequently on young

:07:34. > :07:39.people and alcoholics and that allows people to say, it is not my

:07:39. > :07:43.point and point over in the corner at the youth binge drinkers,

:07:43. > :07:48.without looking at the binge wine drinkers. Who are not necessarily

:07:48. > :07:52.involved in disorder. While England and Wales has seen a decline in

:07:52. > :07:57.drinking in the last five year, the same is not happening in Scotland.

:07:57. > :08:02.We're drinking as much as ever and enough for every adult to exceed

:08:02. > :08:05.the recommended limits each week of the year. Thank you. Meantime,

:08:05. > :08:07.people in Glasgow have been told they could lose their homes if they

:08:07. > :08:10.don't control their children's illegal drinking. It's part of a

:08:10. > :08:13.zero-tolerance approach to tackle violence and drunkenness in the

:08:13. > :08:15.city centre. The police and council are to a clamp-down on street

:08:15. > :08:18.drinking and there'll be tougher enforcement of the under-age rules.

:08:18. > :08:27.But it also includes the introduction of a late-night chill-

:08:27. > :08:32.out hour in the city centre. Laura Bicker reports. This is the dark

:08:32. > :08:38.side of our relationship with booze. Violence, fuelled by alcohol

:08:38. > :08:45.blights our streets. But today, a new task force met members of

:08:45. > :08:49.affected communities and talked tough. We're fed up. I'm fed up.

:08:49. > :08:56.Most decent communities and citizens in Glasgow are fed up with

:08:56. > :09:02.the abuse of alcohol that goes on. And bluntly, we're determined to

:09:02. > :09:08.enforce some decency around this. The sharp shock tactics start with

:09:08. > :09:12.under age drinkers. If caught, parents are warned they could lose

:09:12. > :09:17.their tenancies F they're caught with under age drinkers, children

:09:17. > :09:23.could be referred to the child protection unit. There was always a

:09:23. > :09:29.way to get it. We done it when we were younger. What would have

:09:29. > :09:33.stopped you? Nothing. Your young you will get into trouble. They can

:09:33. > :09:39.get it from people who will buy it for them. Some adults are still

:09:39. > :09:43.going to buy it for them. Officers say that is something they will

:09:43. > :09:49.tackle. They will patrol buses and trains and under age drinkers will

:09:49. > :09:56.be stopped and taken home. Here in the city between 3 and 4am in some

:09:56. > :10:02.bars there will be a chill out thour serve hot food and drinks and

:10:02. > :10:07.stop everyone hitting the streets at the same time. Police officers

:10:07. > :10:13.will record problems with new cameras. If it requires sharp shock

:10:13. > :10:17.in certain places to give people a jolt, then we can do that. This is

:10:17. > :10:23.a real blitz on our booze culture. The police say not all the measures

:10:23. > :10:26.will work, but they say at least it is worthwhile trying. You're

:10:26. > :10:30.watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come before 7:

:10:30. > :10:32.Cleaning up after the zombies - the makers of the Brad Pitt movie say

:10:32. > :10:41.their visit to Glasgow was a success, despite one unexpected

:10:41. > :10:49.hiccup. The sun broke through and we sat around getting a sun tan and

:10:49. > :10:52.not working. They promised us rain and we got sunshine. In sport: It's

:10:52. > :10:58.transfer deadline day and the deadline approaches. Who goes..who

:10:58. > :11:00.stays? We'll tell you the latest. And drama at the US Open tennis -

:11:00. > :11:04.these pictures from Elena Baltacha's first round match. And

:11:04. > :11:07.we'll let you know how Andy Murray is getting on in his - he's on

:11:07. > :11:12.court now. Edinburgh's trams will after all travel along Princes

:11:12. > :11:15.Street into the city centre. Less than a week ago, councillors

:11:15. > :11:18.stunned project managers by voting to stop the line at Haymarket in

:11:18. > :11:21.the west end. The SNP group abstained in that crucial vote, but

:11:21. > :11:24.now say they'll support to run the line to St Andrew's Square. But

:11:24. > :11:34.that'll cost them 230 million - which they'll have to borrow.

:11:34. > :11:36.

:11:36. > :11:39.Here's Gavin Walker. Even by the standards of this project, the

:11:39. > :11:44.development has been remarkable. Less than a week ago the council

:11:44. > :11:48.voted on the trams project's future. The SNP group abstained and

:11:48. > :11:53.councillors voted to end the line at Haymarket, rather than continue

:11:53. > :12:03.to the city centre. That prompted fears for the city's and the

:12:03. > :12:08.

:12:08. > :12:11.country's reputation. Today a U- It should go through that it will

:12:11. > :12:15.come to the city centre. It is by no means ideal because the people

:12:15. > :12:18.of the city have not got what they were promised that they have at

:12:18. > :12:22.least got something better than they thought they would get last

:12:22. > :12:27.week. The decision follows the announcement by the SNP at Holyrood

:12:27. > :12:33.that it would withhold the remaining funding unless the rich

:12:33. > :12:38.continued to the city centre. One date later the SNP group at the

:12:38. > :12:44.Council announced its U-turn. It is another blow for public confidence

:12:44. > :12:52.in the project. How much confidence do you have in Edinburgh council?

:12:52. > :13:00.None at all. That is not very generous? No, but I do not have any

:13:00. > :13:05.confidence in them at all. 0. the council changes its decision

:13:05. > :13:10.next Friday, some may see that as a step forward but in actual fact, it

:13:10. > :13:15.only takes us back to where we were last week, namely, to an incomplete

:13:15. > :13:19.project in apparent disarray with very little financial 70. Many

:13:19. > :13:25.people expect the final bill will now, as it stands, be more than 1

:13:25. > :13:28.billion. A Strathclyde Police officer who

:13:28. > :13:34.claimed she could not be bothered to arrest a suspected robber has

:13:34. > :13:37.been freed by a judge six days into a 12 month sentence. Constable

:13:37. > :13:43.Michelle Selby was convicted of attempting to pervert the course of

:13:43. > :13:49.justice following the failure to arrest a man who was acting

:13:49. > :13:52.suspiciously at a restaurant at 5:30am. She was released pending an

:13:52. > :13:55.outcome of an appeal against a sentence.

:13:55. > :13:59.Cocaine was 5 million has been seized from a boat which docked in

:13:59. > :14:05.Ayrshire. The vessel is thought to have sailed across the Atlantic

:14:05. > :14:09.from Colombia. The UK Border Agency says it is a major find. The 10

:14:09. > :14:12.kilograms of cocaine that has been seized is, we believe, have a

:14:12. > :14:18.particularly high purity and when that is broken down and cut for

:14:18. > :14:22.street deals, it could make up to about 50 kilograms, worth 5

:14:22. > :14:28.million. The significance of that is that we have stopped a huge

:14:28. > :14:33.quantity of drugs from reaching the streets of Scotland and that in

:14:33. > :14:37.itself is significant. Some of the other stories: Fire

:14:37. > :14:41.crews are still tackling a blaze at a row of historic terraced houses

:14:41. > :14:45.in Edinburgh. It broke out at a ground floor flat in Hazelbank

:14:46. > :14:49.Terry's and has damaged several properties. Firefighters said the

:14:49. > :14:51.narrow streets and historic nature of the buildings are making it

:14:51. > :14:56.difficult to stop the fire spreading.

:14:56. > :14:59.Figures released today reveal 28 % of college students are dropping

:14:59. > :15:04.out of their full-time further education courses. Teaching grants

:15:04. > :15:07.and fees for the causes add up to almost 500 million a year. The

:15:07. > :15:09.Scottish Funding Council says the drawback figures reflect the fact

:15:09. > :15:14.that almost a third of students come from disadvantaged

:15:14. > :15:18.neighbourhoods. Opponents of the Aberdeen bypass

:15:18. > :15:22.have confirmed they are pressing ahead with a further legal bid to

:15:22. > :15:25.block construction of the road. Campaign group Roadsense will

:15:25. > :15:32.appeal a judges' decision to throw out its claim that the public

:15:32. > :15:38.inquiry into the bypass was unfair. An opposition petition calling for

:15:38. > :15:40.Roadsense has the support -- calling for Roadsense to drop its

:15:40. > :15:46.petition has the support of thousands of people.

:15:46. > :15:52.The safety of drivers is being put at risk by thieves stealing manhole

:15:52. > :15:55.covers from roads across the Borders. Police have condemned the

:15:55. > :16:00.tests as reckless. For in the last few weeks, there

:16:00. > :16:07.has been a total of 41 drain covers stolen in the Scottish Borders area.

:16:07. > :16:16.These range from some on the A seven over to the A 68, a major

:16:16. > :16:20.That is a significant number of firsts and it is not being done in

:16:20. > :16:25.one go. People will be coming back to the area to steal the covers.

:16:25. > :16:31.Our reporter is in the Borders now. This is a very serious story but

:16:31. > :16:35.what is so attractive about manhole covers in the Borders? Put simply,

:16:35. > :16:39.the thieves think there is a lot of money in these manhole covers. I am

:16:39. > :16:43.here at the Scottish Borders Council headquarters and it was

:16:43. > :16:50.stabbed here that first alerted the police to the theft of these cast

:16:50. > :16:55.iron grating covers. As you have heard, they have been taken from

:16:55. > :17:00.all over the Borders and they have also been taken from smaller minor

:17:00. > :17:04.roads. You can imagine people swerving on minor roads to avoid

:17:05. > :17:07.the holes that these deaths are leaving behind. Back here at the

:17:08. > :17:14.council headquarters, I can show you exactly what the thieves are

:17:14. > :17:20.taking. This is a drainage cover. Water from the road runs down into

:17:20. > :17:27.this. It is leaving behind these big hole and you can imagine the

:17:27. > :17:33.damage that would do to your tyre. Imagine being on a mud -- motorbike.

:17:33. > :17:39.Even if you have a -- for the correct kit, it is still difficult

:17:39. > :17:47.to remove a manhole cover but if they can manage it, they sell the

:17:47. > :17:52.middle part. To buy a new drain cover is 50. A thief would get an

:17:52. > :17:58.absolute fraction of the cost. But thinking about the cost involved,

:17:58. > :18:04.the Scottish Borders Council are talking about 20,000 worth. That

:18:04. > :18:08.is to repair the thefts and damage. Police are concerned about safety.

:18:08. > :18:13.If you see somebody looking or acting suspiciously around about

:18:13. > :18:16.these, report it to the police or the council.

:18:16. > :18:20.David has been looking through some transfer windows.

:18:20. > :18:24.I spent most of my days just staring out of the window but today

:18:24. > :18:29.if it is transfer deadline day and that mean clubs that will have --

:18:29. > :18:36.have until 11pm to buy and sell players. The who is in and who's

:18:36. > :18:44.out? Our senior football reporter has had his telephone glued to his

:18:44. > :18:49.ear today. What is happening? It is the usual deadline day

:18:49. > :18:53.madness. As usual in the past few years, it has been more speculation

:18:53. > :18:57.and rumour that actually deals being sealed. The one that looks it

:18:57. > :19:02.did -- looks like it is going through his Sean Maloney's move

:19:02. > :19:07.from Celtic to Wigan. This morning he had a medical. I have spoken to

:19:07. > :19:11.the club and they say that as our - - far as they're concerned the

:19:11. > :19:15.medical is finished and they ate say he should sign a three-year

:19:15. > :19:21.deal this evening. He was at Aston Villa for a short spell before

:19:21. > :19:25.moving back to Celtic in 2008. So he's going back to the English

:19:25. > :19:29.Premier League yet again. With other strikers at Celtic, George

:19:29. > :19:34.Samaras and Gary Hooper attracting interest. George Samaras, I believe,

:19:34. > :19:38.is not keen to leave, and the club is not keen to lose Gary Hooper.

:19:38. > :19:46.Another Celtic striker, Anthony Stokes, has been having his say in

:19:46. > :19:50.the imminent departure of Sean Maloney. I wish him the best. He is

:19:50. > :19:54.a top professional and great player. I wish him all the best. He has

:19:54. > :19:59.been hampered with injuries for the last while and even while I have

:19:59. > :20:05.been here, he has struggled with injuries but if he can keep himself

:20:05. > :20:11.fit he is a top player who will cut it at the very highest levels.

:20:11. > :20:15.Any inns and out at Rangers? So far, no. Leicester City had a

:20:15. > :20:24.bit of five points 6 million rejected last night for you love it.

:20:24. > :20:30.There has been plenty speculation. -- For Jelavic sh. Rangers would be

:20:30. > :20:36.very unhappy to lose him. They have told me that unless it is silly

:20:36. > :20:43.money then Nicky did delegate is going absolutely nowhere. --

:20:43. > :20:49.Nikitta yellow fit. There are just over five hours before the transfer

:20:49. > :20:54.window closes and anything is possible, absolutely anything. Stay

:20:54. > :20:57.tuned to BBC radio and online for all the latest.

:20:57. > :21:01.Just as Chris was talking to waive their someone answered his phone

:21:01. > :21:06.behind him and told us Sean Maloney has in fact now signed for Wigan.

:21:06. > :21:10.As that transfer deadline creeps ever nearer, as to Scotland's

:21:10. > :21:15.European Championship qualifying matches against Czech Republic and

:21:15. > :21:19.Lithuania at Hampden. Wins over both nations would give Scotland a

:21:19. > :21:23.real chance of qualifying for a place in the play-offs. The Czech

:21:23. > :21:30.Republic are first up on Saturday but is it win or bust for our Euro

:21:30. > :21:40.2012 hopes? We have always said that we have to do well. I think it

:21:40. > :21:41.

:21:41. > :21:44.is important that we focus on the game and try to win the match now.

:21:45. > :21:49.It has been a long week but Andy Murray is finally about to get his

:21:49. > :21:54.latest shot at US Open glory. In the last few minutes he has come on
