0:00:10 > 0:00:14Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news, a

0:00:15 > 0:00:24family's grief at the brutal murder of a son. Stewart Walker was beaten

0:00:25 > 0:00:25

0:00:25 > 0:00:28and burnt in what police say wasn't a random attack. One of the best

0:00:28 > 0:00:32and most fun guys I've ever had the chance to meet in my life. Every

0:00:32 > 0:00:35Monday morning it was a pleasure going into work. We'll be in

0:00:35 > 0:00:38Ayrshire tonight with the latest. Also in the programme, get ready

0:00:38 > 0:00:42for severe weather. The government campaign to give advice and help -

0:00:42 > 0:00:44just in case this winter turns out to be as bad as the last one. An

0:00:44 > 0:00:54inquest opens into the death of this 84-year-old women, killed when

0:00:54 > 0:00:55

0:00:55 > 0:00:58a high-speed train came off the rails in Cumbria. And later... Why

0:00:58 > 0:01:07some of the most beautiful women in the world are hitting the high

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Detectives investigating the murder of a 28-year-old Ayrshire man at

0:01:10 > 0:01:13the weekend are trying to piece together his final few hours. There

0:01:13 > 0:01:16was speculation that the killing of Stuart Walker was motivated by

0:01:16 > 0:01:18homophobia, but police say there is nothing to indicate that is the

0:01:18 > 0:01:28case. This afternoon some of Stuart's family visited the spot

0:01:28 > 0:01:29

0:01:29 > 0:01:33where his body was found. Aileen This afternoon, Stewart Walker's

0:01:33 > 0:01:38family came to lay flowers the where he was found. The grief and

0:01:38 > 0:01:43pain almost too much to bear. Stewart was 28 years old, and the

0:01:43 > 0:01:48life and soul of any party. But that zest for life was cruelly and

0:01:48 > 0:01:55brutally cut short in the early hours of Saturday morning. I am

0:01:55 > 0:02:02stunned that something like this could happen. To somebody like him.

0:02:02 > 0:02:09I can only speak as I find. very polite boy. He used to come to

0:02:09 > 0:02:13the House with my grandson, very polite boy. Couldn't have got a

0:02:13 > 0:02:22nice a boy than him. Amongst those laying tributes, one woman recalled

0:02:22 > 0:02:27that he had been beaten up before. He got battered the last time. His

0:02:27 > 0:02:31mum went to rescue him and got an ambulance. He was found lying on

0:02:32 > 0:02:35this roadside just before 5am. He was badly beaten, there were burn

0:02:35 > 0:02:41marks on his body and he was pronounced dead shortly after being

0:02:41 > 0:02:45found. Just last week he had started a new job at this far in

0:02:45 > 0:02:50Kilmarnock. The manager told me that he had a really good

0:02:50 > 0:02:58personality and was really good with the customers. This friend had

0:02:58 > 0:03:04a text message from him on Wednesday. Laugh out loud, awesome.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07Telos and Rona and them all that I am asking for them. Was he a fun

0:03:07 > 0:03:10person to be around? One of the best, fun guys I've ever had the

0:03:10 > 0:03:15chance to meet in my life. Know what matter what, every Monday

0:03:15 > 0:03:19morning it was a pleasure going into work. He'd have the music on

0:03:19 > 0:03:25and be on top of the world all the time. Thousands of people have now

0:03:25 > 0:03:28logged on to a special Facebook tribute page for him. He was gay,

0:03:28 > 0:03:32but the police are not convinced that this stage that this was a

0:03:33 > 0:03:36homophobic attack. There's an element of violence which is

0:03:36 > 0:03:40uncommon. The motive for that we have yet to establish. Suffice to

0:03:40 > 0:03:45say, a young man who had everything to live for has had his life

0:03:45 > 0:03:50cruelly snatched away. We will do everything to bring those to book

0:03:50 > 0:03:55who are responsible for this horrible crime. The police know

0:03:55 > 0:03:58that Stewart was out on Friday night. He was last seen at around

0:03:58 > 0:04:062:30am beside the fire station in Cumnock. Where he was between there

0:04:06 > 0:04:12and when he was found at 4:50am is what they are trying to find out.

0:04:12 > 0:04:21It is an absolute and utter shock. Nobody can comprehend what has

0:04:21 > 0:04:27happened to him. Nobody can believe this would happen. Our police any

0:04:27 > 0:04:30nearer finding a motive for this killing? It's interesting because

0:04:30 > 0:04:35the police are saying tonight that they are optimistic that they will

0:04:35 > 0:04:39be able to solve this fairly soon. They say they write a number of

0:04:39 > 0:04:42leads they are following up. Among those leaves may be the possibility

0:04:42 > 0:04:47that Stewart actually knew his killer. Look at where we are

0:04:47 > 0:04:51standing. This is a very lonely industrial estate. If you think

0:04:51 > 0:04:55about this place in the early hours of a Saturday morning, it was

0:04:55 > 0:04:59probably very lonely indeed, very quiet. It's not the kind of place

0:04:59 > 0:05:03you would cut through to go to anywhere. Was it perhaps that he

0:05:03 > 0:05:08came here to meet someone? The police are saying that they believe

0:05:08 > 0:05:14his injuries that went on to kill him, those dreadfully violent,

0:05:14 > 0:05:17brutal injuries, were inflicted here. That will be one line of

0:05:17 > 0:05:20inquiry that the police will be following up tonight. It's

0:05:20 > 0:05:27interesting that they are optimistic that they will manage to

0:05:27 > 0:05:29solve this fairly soon. A majority of Scots say they don't feel

0:05:29 > 0:05:35prepared for adverse weather conditions, such as the heavy snows

0:05:35 > 0:05:38and prolonged freezes which have marked the last two winters. Today

0:05:38 > 0:05:42the Scottish Government launched a campaign giving advice to help

0:05:42 > 0:05:46reduce the risks if we're hit by another severe winter. Cameron

0:05:46 > 0:05:56Buttle is at Edinburgh Airport for us tonight. Explain to us why you

0:05:56 > 0:05:56

0:05:56 > 0:06:00are there, Cameron. These machines have been the backbone of the fight

0:06:00 > 0:06:04to keep Edinburgh airport open every winter. There are five of

0:06:04 > 0:06:09them. The past couple of winters have been so severe, they haven't

0:06:09 > 0:06:12been enough. That's why Edinburgh airport is investing 2 million in

0:06:12 > 0:06:16people and equipment, equipment like these state-of-the-art snow

0:06:17 > 0:06:22blowers. That can shift more snow than ever before. So much snow fell

0:06:22 > 0:06:25last winter, it was still lying about here in piles in May. This

0:06:25 > 0:06:30machine is designed to smack through those hard-packed snow

0:06:30 > 0:06:34drifts. The staff here aren't going to close again because of

0:06:34 > 0:06:38severe weather. They are saying that if they have to clear it, they

0:06:38 > 0:06:41can clear it twice as quick as before. It may be hard to think of

0:06:41 > 0:06:45Arctic conditions already, but these pictures are sure to send a

0:06:45 > 0:06:48shiver down your spine. It was a near constant battle to keep the

0:06:48 > 0:06:53runway of Scotland's busiest airport open. Sometimes it was

0:06:53 > 0:06:58simply not possible. Hopefully this year the fight will be a bit more

0:06:58 > 0:07:03even. It was the continual snowfall, it was very challenging. One of the

0:07:03 > 0:07:06biggest things, safety is paramount. With the amount of snow for we had

0:07:06 > 0:07:12come a lot of aircraft can't perform in that level. It's about

0:07:12 > 0:07:17being able to clear the runway quicker. In December be unthinkable

0:07:17 > 0:07:21happened. The M8 was closed. It was chaos on the roads, thousands were

0:07:21 > 0:07:26trapped in their cars all over central Scotland. It cost the

0:07:26 > 0:07:32minister his job, it cost the economy. Huge parts of Scotland

0:07:32 > 0:07:36near ground to a halt. These are space blankets, used in an

0:07:36 > 0:07:40emergency to keep people warm - potential life-savers. These are

0:07:40 > 0:07:45going to be distributed all over Scotland by the Red Cross. For

0:07:45 > 0:07:51those caught in the chaos on the M8, it's enough to make sure that they

0:07:51 > 0:07:58and hopefully others are prepared. I was in my car for about 15 hours

0:07:58 > 0:08:02in the end. My phone battery died, my car battery diet -- died. It

0:08:02 > 0:08:05wasn't the most pleasant experience. Do they, the Scottish Government

0:08:05 > 0:08:09launched a campaign to encourage us all to get ready for whatever this

0:08:09 > 0:08:12winter might throw at us. We know there is a willingness for people

0:08:12 > 0:08:15to do what's necessary, to look after themselves and look after

0:08:15 > 0:08:22their neighbours. We want to make sure that they know what it is they

0:08:22 > 0:08:25have to do. Winter is coming in at Scotland. We are probably going to

0:08:25 > 0:08:32see the likes of this again. You may hope for the best, but the

0:08:32 > 0:08:35message is we should plan for the worst. There is lots of advice and

0:08:35 > 0:08:39information out there now. The advice is to have a look at it now,

0:08:39 > 0:08:42make your plans because the advice is doing now why you cannot you've

0:08:43 > 0:08:48got time before it might be too late. Hopefully it won't be too

0:08:48 > 0:08:53late, maybe we won't have that bad a winter. Scotland midfielder Barry

0:08:53 > 0:08:55Bannan has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. The 21-

0:08:55 > 0:09:00year-old was travelling in a car which struck the central

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Sunday morning. The Aston Villa player was also arrested on

0:09:03 > 0:09:07suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of an accident. No other

0:09:07 > 0:09:13vehicles were involved and no-one was injured. You're watching

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come before seven, we look

0:09:15 > 0:09:22at the little-known links between Scotland and modern-day weather

0:09:22 > 0:09:28forecasting. And why more than 100 of the world's best-looking women

0:09:28 > 0:09:32gathered in Perthshire field. In Sport, we can get the better of

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Celtic's shaky defence, so says a Hibs striker. Jody Morris rules

0:09:36 > 0:09:39himself out of the running for the St Johnstone job. And in good hands

0:09:39 > 0:09:48- second division East Fife go looking for another SPL scalp in

0:09:48 > 0:09:53An inquest opened today into the death of an elderly woman from

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Glasgow killed when an express train travelling at 95 mph derailed.

0:09:55 > 0:10:00Margaret Masson was travelling home with her daughter and son-in-law

0:10:00 > 0:10:03when the train came off the tracks in Cumbria in 2007. A short time

0:10:04 > 0:10:13ago we spoke to our correspondent Danny Savage, who has been at the

0:10:14 > 0:10:14

0:10:14 > 0:10:19inquest. It was a dark winter's evening in February 2007, a Friday

0:10:19 > 0:10:23night, when the 1715 service from London Euston to Glasgow came off

0:10:23 > 0:10:28the tracks here in the embankment behind me, near Kendal in Cumbria.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32It went over a set of points, causing the train to derail. It

0:10:32 > 0:10:35stayed at break for some 300 metres before it came off the track,

0:10:35 > 0:10:39leaving the carriages scattered across a wide distance. The reason

0:10:39 > 0:10:43we've been hearing about this today is its the inquest into the only

0:10:43 > 0:10:48person who died that night, 84- year-old Margaret Masson. We heard

0:10:48 > 0:10:53from her relatives who were on the train with her. Her daughter was

0:10:53 > 0:10:58with her shouting, mum, mum! She was trying to help their elderly

0:10:58 > 0:11:01mother. We also heard from her late husband, Richard Langley, who

0:11:01 > 0:11:07described being thrown the 6 ft into the air during the crash. He

0:11:07 > 0:11:11ended up wedged in by a table. Scenes of people being wedged under

0:11:11 > 0:11:13seats and scattered across carriages in the moments that

0:11:13 > 0:11:19followed the crash. The inquest also heard from the train driver,

0:11:19 > 0:11:24Iain Black from Dumbarton. What were his recollections?

0:11:25 > 0:11:28He took over as service drive that at Preston station. He described to

0:11:28 > 0:11:34the court that the journey should have been easy. Driving at various

0:11:34 > 0:11:38different speeds up to 125 mph. As he went over the points here and

0:11:38 > 0:11:42the train began to do rail, he told the court without a shadow of a

0:11:42 > 0:11:46doubt, I knew what I was in Big Bopper. The train jumped into the

0:11:46 > 0:11:51air. He said he lost consciousness in the moments that followed, but

0:11:51 > 0:11:53he then woke up again. He was wedged on top of the dashboard

0:11:53 > 0:11:59under the windscreen looking back at my seat in the cab. I heard

0:11:59 > 0:12:01screaming, I knew I was badly injured. But he still had the

0:12:01 > 0:12:04presence of mind to pick up his mobile phone and place a call to

0:12:04 > 0:12:07warn that there had been an accident and to get the line closed.

0:12:08 > 0:12:17He has finished giving evidence, but other people will be heard from

0:12:18 > 0:12:19

0:12:19 > 0:12:23throughout his inquest, which is Amman is to stand trial in January

0:12:23 > 0:12:27charged with the murder of his four-month-old baby daughter. 32-

0:12:28 > 0:12:34year-old Craig Jamieson is alleged to have killed his daughter at a

0:12:34 > 0:12:38flat in Glasgow on Dumbarton Road in February 2008. It is claimed he

0:12:38 > 0:12:42inflicted blunt force trauma or her head and body weaving her so

0:12:42 > 0:12:47ensured that he died later at Glasgow's Yorkhill Hospital.

0:12:47 > 0:12:53The trial has heard details of how a businessman was shot dead at a

0:12:53 > 0:12:59flat in Kirkcaldy last year. Mohammed Nadeem Siddique died in

0:12:59 > 0:13:06the flat owned by his brother. Mohammed Azam Siddique is one of

0:13:06 > 0:13:10those charged. A tall ships event in Greenock this year generated

0:13:10 > 0:13:14millions of pounds for the Scottish economy according to a recent

0:13:14 > 0:13:20independent report. 10.4 million of revenue was

0:13:20 > 0:13:27brought into heck -- Inverclyde, with a further 8.8 million going

0:13:27 > 0:13:30to the West of Scotland. Memories of a nice day. 11 the

0:13:30 > 0:13:35programme, we were telling you about the campaign to prepare us

0:13:35 > 0:13:41for another harsh winter. But how do we know just how cold, windy or

0:13:41 > 0:13:48wet it has been in comparison to rather years? Our correspondent has

0:13:48 > 0:13:54been taking a look behind the weather map.

0:13:54 > 0:14:01Snow, rain, wind and occasionally even warmth. He then Scotland we

0:14:01 > 0:14:06are used to the ups and downs of the weather.

0:14:06 > 0:14:11A stronger and gusty south-easterly breeze.

0:14:11 > 0:14:15It is a complicated business predicting the future. It relies on

0:14:15 > 0:14:24supercomputers crunching vast amounts of data. And to get it

0:14:24 > 0:14:32right, we need to know how likely it is.

0:14:32 > 0:14:39This monitoring station has a lot of history behind it. The

0:14:39 > 0:14:46observatory stood quiet for many years. Its inhabitants took note of

0:14:46 > 0:14:51Mother Nature's mood swings. The superintendent here started

0:14:51 > 0:14:57work in the 1920s and produced a book about weather prediction, and

0:14:57 > 0:15:02it is still the system we use today. In some ways, it could be described

0:15:02 > 0:15:08as the birthplace of modern weather forecasting.

0:15:08 > 0:15:12Today it is computers rather than pencils that recall the weather.

0:15:12 > 0:15:18Measurements are taken at scores of weather stations across Scotland

0:15:18 > 0:15:24and new daytime is updated every minute. It has changed dramatically

0:15:24 > 0:15:32in my 40 years. You did go out every hour to beat the thermometers

0:15:32 > 0:15:40and so on, but nowadays, you just start checking the automatic

0:15:40 > 0:15:47equipment is working properly. Nowadays, the humble balloon still

0:15:47 > 0:15:53plays an essential role. This is a standard five inch copper ring

0:15:54 > 0:15:57gauge. We pour the contents into this measuring cylinder. Predicting

0:15:57 > 0:16:01the weather is never going to be easy and we will never get it right

0:16:01 > 0:16:05all of the time. One thing is certain, it will always keep

0:16:06 > 0:16:12changing. The Scottish Government is being

0:16:12 > 0:16:16asked to establish a fund to support the video games industry.

0:16:16 > 0:16:21The industry association says a creative content fund would provide

0:16:21 > 0:16:25incentives for companies to stay in Scotland. The Scottish Government

0:16:25 > 0:16:31says millions of pounds has already been provided.

0:16:31 > 0:16:38Rangers have taken the Swedish international striker Jo Sise on

0:16:38 > 0:16:43trial. He is out of contract with Swedish club Halmstads. Meanwhile,

0:16:43 > 0:16:46Celtic captain Charlie Mulgrew says it is win at all costs. Victories

0:16:46 > 0:16:51for the Old Firm yesterday means there is still 10 points between

0:16:51 > 0:16:58the teams. For Celtic, today was about giving

0:16:58 > 0:17:07and asking the fans to get behind their remembrance gesture.

0:17:07 > 0:17:12Yesterday was all about taking. Three point was all that matter.

0:17:13 > 0:17:21We do not think about the critics we just concentrate on our cells.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25Hopefully we can keep winning, no matter how we do it. Charlie

0:17:25 > 0:17:29Mulgrew's winner came after the Celtic defence had again been

0:17:29 > 0:17:33penetrated rather be easily. That did not to detract from the

0:17:33 > 0:17:39manager's admiration for his skipper. His improvement since

0:17:39 > 0:17:45coming back here has been huge and it is a credit to him. He played

0:17:45 > 0:17:50down south and then came back and never gave up on it. It is a great

0:17:50 > 0:17:53achievement for him. Do not ask Charlie Mulgrew about personal

0:17:53 > 0:17:59glory. Do you feel you have a chance of

0:17:59 > 0:18:06being in Craig Levein's squat? is up to him and I will just keep

0:18:06 > 0:18:10playing and concentrating on Celtic. Their rivals Rangers continue

0:18:10 > 0:18:13undefeated at the top of the SPL table.

0:18:13 > 0:18:21St Johnstone captain Jody Morris has ruled himself out of the

0:18:21 > 0:18:26running for the vacant manager's job at -- at McDiarmid Park. He has

0:18:26 > 0:18:35made it clear he would like to carry on playing and a player

0:18:35 > 0:18:40manager appointment is not a core. The Hibs striker Junior Agogo says

0:18:40 > 0:18:46the Easter Road side could not Celtic out of the Community's leak

0:18:47 > 0:18:54Cup because their defence is shaky. Junior Agogo says that head spore

0:18:54 > 0:18:59into the game confident after a win over St Mirren on Saturday.

0:18:59 > 0:19:04scored two goals. Coming back in the manner that we do it will give

0:19:04 > 0:19:11us confidence. We will go into this game on Wednesday confident that we

0:19:11 > 0:19:16can do a job. Before that League Cup tie, Second Division East Fife

0:19:16 > 0:19:20are in action tomorrow night looking for another SPL scalp. They

0:19:20 > 0:19:24go to Kilmarnock in their quarter final and after knocking out on

0:19:24 > 0:19:34farmland and Aberdeen in previous rounds, all eyes are on them and

0:19:34 > 0:19:41

0:19:41 > 0:19:50their goalkeeper, who has a knack Not one, not two, but three penalty

0:19:50 > 0:19:54saves from East Fife goalkeeper Mark Bridges. What is his secret?

0:19:54 > 0:20:04bit of a guessing game. I am a big lad, so I hoped that if I went the

0:20:04 > 0:20:07

0:20:07 > 0:20:14right way, I would get something on them. He is on loan at the club

0:20:14 > 0:20:18from Hearts. His manager, himself a former Tynecastle player, says that

0:20:18 > 0:20:23the experience he is gathering will serve him well when he returns to

0:20:23 > 0:20:28Edinburgh. It will stand him in good stead because he is going back
