0:00:12 > 0:00:16Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news:
0:00:16 > 0:00:19Schools out on St Andrew's Day, teachers vote to strike later this
0:00:19 > 0:00:24month in the first walk out for nearly a quarter of the century.
0:00:24 > 0:00:29Nearly every school in the country will be effective. Ruth Davidson is
0:00:29 > 0:00:33duly elected leader of the Scottish Conservatives and Unionist Party.
0:00:33 > 0:00:38So six months as an MSP and Ruth Davidson is tonight the new leader
0:00:38 > 0:00:40of the Scottish Conservatives. The Prime Minister offers his
0:00:40 > 0:00:45congratulations as we look at the task ahead of her.
0:00:45 > 0:00:53The family whose mother was killed in this train crash forgive the man
0:00:53 > 0:01:00whose mistake caused her death. is the only one there seemed to try
0:01:00 > 0:01:05and help. My family do not hold anything against him.
0:01:05 > 0:01:12And United for a quarter of a century. 25 or glittering years in
0:01:12 > 0:01:15Manchester. Most of Scotland's schools to be
0:01:15 > 0:01:20closed in the first strike by teachers in almost a quarter of the
0:01:20 > 0:01:27century. Members of the EIS have voted for the one-day stoppage on
0:01:27 > 0:01:32November 30th in a dispute over coast changes to pensions.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36-- proposed changes. In just over three weeks, the gates will shut in
0:01:37 > 0:01:41schools right across Scotland. Teachers don't in chalk over
0:01:41 > 0:01:47Government plans to change pensions. The dispute is very much over
0:01:47 > 0:01:50pensions which are part of the salary and remuneration package.
0:01:50 > 0:01:56Clearly, the Government thinks we should have to be greater
0:01:56 > 0:02:02contributions, work longer and get less at the end. Echoes of the
0:02:02 > 0:02:071980s, when teachers and later famous friends to to the streets in
0:02:07 > 0:02:11a dispute over pay. The staggered strikes lasted over a year. This
0:02:11 > 0:02:16time, top of just one day, but will parents hit by tough times
0:02:16 > 0:02:20themselves by it? I will have to miss going to university, it is
0:02:20 > 0:02:25quite important and I have no one else to look after the children.
0:02:25 > 0:02:30will be a nuisance at the time, provisions will have to be made,
0:02:30 > 0:02:37but I agree with it. I have four children, so my kids will miss out
0:02:37 > 0:02:42on education. This much last year in Glasgow, the first sign unrest
0:02:42 > 0:02:46was on the way back. Today, an overwhelming vote for strike. The
0:02:46 > 0:02:49Scottish Government says it is disappointed. We quite understand
0:02:49 > 0:02:53the concern, because the Scottish Government disagrees fundamentally
0:02:53 > 0:02:59with the UK Government about how they are going about the whole
0:02:59 > 0:03:04process of pension reform. But we very much regret that EIS members
0:03:04 > 0:03:08have decided take industrial action. Tens of thousands of primary and
0:03:08 > 0:03:12secondary teachers are set to take action. Even primary head teachers,
0:03:12 > 0:03:18once known for manning the barricades, have voted in principle
0:03:18 > 0:03:24for the strike. November 30th is shaping up to be a date to remember
0:03:24 > 0:03:27for Scottish schools. The former BBC journalist Ruth
0:03:27 > 0:03:32Davidson has been elected as the new leader of the Scottish
0:03:32 > 0:03:37Conservatives. Ms Davidson has only been an MSP since May. She was
0:03:37 > 0:03:41chosen to succeed Annabel Goldie after vigorously opposing Murdo
0:03:41 > 0:03:48Fraser's suggesting that the Tories in Scotland should be disbanded and
0:03:48 > 0:03:52relaunched as a new centre-right party. Glenn Campbell reports.
0:03:52 > 0:03:58The key contenders came to the count one by one. They brought in
0:03:58 > 0:04:03the ballot boxes. Party members had for MS Ps to choose from. To find a
0:04:03 > 0:04:07leader for the party at Holyrood and for the first time, someone to
0:04:07 > 0:04:14lead the wider party in Scotland. Rumours soon spread that Rhys
0:04:14 > 0:04:21Davids and was ahead. -- Ruth Davidson. After several hours,
0:04:21 > 0:04:25victory was indeed her as. declare Ruth Davidson the duly
0:04:25 > 0:04:30elected leader of the Scottish Conservatives and Unionist Party.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34Murdo Fraser was the first of her three defeated rivals to offer her
0:04:34 > 0:04:37a kiss of congratulation. His bold plan to break away from the British
0:04:38 > 0:04:43Conservatives to form a new centre right force for Scotland seems to
0:04:43 > 0:04:46have cost him the job and handed it to a political newcomer.
0:04:46 > 0:04:51campaigned on a platform of change, there is what I need to do to
0:04:51 > 0:04:54change the party to make it a modern fighting force, so we are
0:04:54 > 0:04:57equipped to take on the other parties in Scotland. But there is
0:04:57 > 0:05:01also lot to do in terms of changing the way in which we deliver the
0:05:01 > 0:05:11message as well to people, and that will involve bringing in other
0:05:11 > 0:05:14
0:05:14 > 0:05:18voices. He is the leadership result. -- here is. At this stage, Jackson
0:05:18 > 0:05:24Carlaw and Margaret Mitchell trailed in third and 4th places.
0:05:24 > 0:05:29When they dropped out of the race, and second preferences were
0:05:29 > 0:05:37redistributed, Bruce Davidson finished further ahead. -- Ruth
0:05:37 > 0:05:42Davidson. So, who is the new leader? She is a
0:05:42 > 0:05:47former BBC journalist. Inspired by David Cameron, she joined the
0:05:47 > 0:05:52Tories two years ago. Elected to Holyrood in May, her political rise
0:05:52 > 0:06:01has been rapid. Glenn Campbell joins me now from
0:06:01 > 0:06:06Edinburgh. What does this mean for the Conservatives in Scotland?
0:06:06 > 0:06:09It is surprising in that a few weeks ago, she was certainly not
0:06:09 > 0:06:15regarded as a front-runner and it is surprising in that Tory leaders
0:06:15 > 0:06:18tend to be a bit longer in the tooth. But Ruth Davidson now is the
0:06:18 > 0:06:23youngest leader of any main political party in Scotland, in
0:06:23 > 0:06:30fact, probably the youngest since devolution. And she has a big job
0:06:30 > 0:06:35to rebuild her party and to build a united team around her. Because
0:06:35 > 0:06:41only two of the 15 MSPs at Holyrood other than herself chose to back a
0:06:41 > 0:06:45campaign. I think she will reach out by offering Murdo Fraser a big
0:06:45 > 0:06:49job, he may have a big decision whether or not to take that or take
0:06:49 > 0:06:54a back seat, because he effectively said the party couldn't return to
0:06:54 > 0:07:00victory in its current form. One thing I think he will not do is
0:07:00 > 0:07:05break away, because he knows how hard it is to draw voters-1 centre
0:07:05 > 0:07:07right ballot, presumably it would be harder still if there were two.
0:07:07 > 0:07:12You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come before
0:07:12 > 0:07:16seven: Family and friends of the former trade union leader Campbell
0:07:16 > 0:07:19Christie celebrate his life to of service.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23And in sport, and Neil Lennon tries to get to the bottom of Celtic's
0:07:23 > 0:07:27injury crisis, could it have something to do with their multi-
0:07:27 > 0:07:30million-pound training complex? Ricky Burns weighs in for what he
0:07:30 > 0:07:38says is the biggest fight of his life. All that and Sir Alex
0:07:38 > 0:07:42Ferguson. The family of a Scottish woman
0:07:42 > 0:07:46killed in the D B a much of a high- speed train in Cumbria say they
0:07:46 > 0:07:50hold Network Rail responsible. 84- year-old Margaret Masson died when
0:07:50 > 0:07:55the Virgin Express from London to Glasgow came off the track near
0:07:55 > 0:08:00Grayrigg. Today, an inquest found that a badly maintained set of
0:08:00 > 0:08:06points had caused the crash. It was remarkable that more people
0:08:06 > 0:08:11were not killed. This train had been travelling at 95 mph when it
0:08:11 > 0:08:14derailed. Margaret Masson, and 84- year-old grandmother, died in the
0:08:14 > 0:08:24crash. More than 80 people were injured, including her daughter,
0:08:24 > 0:08:26
0:08:26 > 0:08:33who was at today's verdict. I miss my mother very much. What sort of
0:08:33 > 0:08:36woman was she? A happy woman. She loved her family. A badly
0:08:36 > 0:08:40maintained set of points has been blamed for the crash. The engineer
0:08:40 > 0:08:46who should have checked them, told the inquest he had forgotten to do
0:08:46 > 0:08:50it. David Lewis, seen here at the back of this group, said his team
0:08:50 > 0:08:54was understaffed and under pressure and that he had e-mailed his bosses
0:08:54 > 0:08:58the year before to say the inspection process was a shambles.
0:08:59 > 0:09:08Today, Margaret Masson's family say they did not hold him responsible.
0:09:09 > 0:09:10
0:09:10 > 0:09:16This man was sincere, he showed remorse, and he has more -- much
0:09:16 > 0:09:21respect in my family, we don't hold anything against him. Nobody
0:09:21 > 0:09:25listened to him. The coroner also praised the driver's courage and
0:09:25 > 0:09:29character. He stayed at the controls as it crashed. Weeks
0:09:29 > 0:09:34afterwards, he spoke to the BBC from his home in Dumbarton. There
0:09:34 > 0:09:40was nothing that was going to save the train. I have to try anyway. I
0:09:40 > 0:09:45could not do that sitting with the passengers. This inquest has been a
0:09:45 > 0:09:48chance for Margaret Masson's family to draw a line under what happened.
0:09:48 > 0:09:57Network Rail has apologised, but a family believes the company has a

0:11:42 > 0:11:45crashed into the sea of Shetland on November 6th, 1986. These
0:11:45 > 0:11:50helicopters were immediately grounded, but Robert Maxwell tried
0:11:50 > 0:11:56hard to bring them back, even taking a flight himself to prove
0:11:56 > 0:12:02they were safe. We have no trepidation. The crash should not
0:12:02 > 0:12:06have happened. But all life is at risk. Perhaps unsurprisingly, those
0:12:06 > 0:12:13words angered workers. They came together to fight the cause against
0:12:13 > 0:12:17the use of the shindig, and they won. Maxwell was probably the best
0:12:17 > 0:12:24person the could have had to campaign against. It was seen as a

0:13:07 > 0:13:15had to wait to make sure there were no other survivors who would pop up

0:16:45 > 0:16:53and a football pitch in the forest, there is no shortage of ideas or
0:16:53 > 0:16:58ambition. One of the great ideas is that the festival can come to local
0:16:58 > 0:17:02communities all round Scotland. We can create a programme with
0:17:02 > 0:17:07creative Scotland, in partnership with local communities, much of it

0:18:09 > 0:18:12looking this evening. Celtic's injury problem could be
0:18:12 > 0:18:15down to the club's training pitch, says manager Neil Lennon. According
0:18:15 > 0:18:19to Lennon, only four or five of his players have remained injury free
0:18:19 > 0:18:29this season. Heel is now faced with mustering a side to face second

0:18:39 > 0:18:47scores. Celtic defeated the French state on Thursday, but once again
0:18:47 > 0:18:52they had to do it it with the makeshift side. Looking at the
0:18:52 > 0:18:57surface here, it can be quite slippy when it gets wet. It might
0:18:57 > 0:19:07have contributed to a couple of soft tissue injuries we have
0:19:07 > 0:19:12
0:19:12 > 0:19:20received. It is a terrible back- pass. Inconsistency has been the
0:19:20 > 0:19:27problem for Celtic this season. Players think that the changing
0:19:27 > 0:19:32personnel has something to do with it. No such problems for the
0:19:32 > 0:19:40manager of the month, Motherwell manager Stuart McCall, who play
0:19:40 > 0:19:50host to Celtic on Sunday. Realistically, can we split Celtic
0:19:50 > 0:19:53and Rangers? Probably not. Can we win on Sunday? Yes, we can.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56After a delay of almost three weeks, the Hearts first team squad have

0:20:02 > 0:20:04with the manager and their union they decided to allow the club more
0:20:04 > 0:20:07time. Ricky Burns has weighed in bang on
0:20:07 > 0:20:10the nine stone nine pounds mark for his WBO Interim World Lightweight
0:20:10 > 0:20:12title fight at Wembley Arena tomorrow night. It is the first
0:20:12 > 0:20:20time the former super-featherweight champion has stepped into the ring
0:20:20 > 0:20:27at his new weight. He takes on Australian Michael Katsidis.
0:20:27 > 0:20:31will be a very hard fight ahead of me. Michael is a great fighter, but
0:20:31 > 0:20:34I have always said that the bet and the opponent in front of me, the
0:20:34 > 0:20:36better I will be. The most successful Scottish
0:20:36 > 0:20:39manager of all time has another reason to celebrate this weekend.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42Sir Alex Ferguson, the longest serving boss in the English Premier
0:20:42 > 0:20:45league, will have been charge of Manchester United for a quarter of
0:20:45 > 0:20:55a century. And he says he has no intention of slipping quietly into
0:20:55 > 0:20:55
0:20:55 > 0:21:00retirement. 1986 - Sir Alex Ferguson steps of the team bus for
0:21:00 > 0:21:09his first game in charge of Manchester United. 25 years on he
0:21:09 > 0:21:13is still in charge. It is his silver jubilee. It has been a
0:21:13 > 0:21:19fantastic spell for me. It is something you do not think is going
0:21:19 > 0:21:29to happen. It is amazing that it that has lasted so long and I
0:21:29 > 0:21:32
0:21:32 > 0:21:38appreciate that. He has led the club to a host of championships,
0:21:38 > 0:21:43including two Champions League trophies. Just look all the teams
0:21:43 > 0:21:50he has built. He has brought young players through the development
0:21:50 > 0:21:59programme. I think he is the best manager there has ever been. The he
0:21:59 > 0:22:06has had a few fall-outs with people along the way. He is just one of
0:22:06 > 0:22:11these people that you can never quite read. One day, he can be a
0:22:11 > 0:22:16brilliant worth and the next day, something might have upset him and
0:22:16 > 0:22:24he is completely different. But that is one of his strengths. You
0:22:24 > 0:22:29never quite know what you're going to get next. His reputation has
0:22:29 > 0:22:35given him a few imitators. A few years ago, he announced his
0:22:35 > 0:22:40retirement and then changed his mind. Can we look forward to his
0:22:40 > 0:22:43Golden Jubilee in 2036? Today marked a significant
0:22:43 > 0:22:49milestone for Scotland's only commando unit, as the final four
0:22:49 > 0:22:51marines from 45 Commando completed their latest tour of Afghanistan. A
0:22:51 > 0:22:55the Arbroath-based unit have emerged from the last six months
0:22:55 > 0:22:58without suffering a single fatality - a cause for relief at their RM
0:22:58 > 0:23:08Condor base, as locals were offered their first glimpse at a new
0:23:08 > 0:23:10
0:23:10 > 0:23:18memorial garden. A world away from the heat and dust of Afghanistan
0:23:18 > 0:23:25and, members of 45, and will give people at tour of the my new
0:23:25 > 0:23:29memorial garden. The timing is significant. More than six months
0:23:29 > 0:23:37after the Marines were sent to war, today mark the day the all where
0:23:37 > 0:23:44counted back home safely. We have that some men badly injured, but we
0:23:44 > 0:23:54have not had any fatalities. The fact that it has been a successful
0:23:54 > 0:23:54
0:23:54 > 0:23:59tour has allowed us to come back and reflect on what we have done.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02The cost of previous campaigns is never forgotten. The centrepiece of
0:24:02 > 0:24:12the memorial garden it is this memorial made of granite with the
0:24:12 > 0:24:13
0:24:13 > 0:24:21names of all the people from 45 Commando killed in service. For the
0:24:21 > 0:24:28commanding officer, many of the people where his friends. A very
0:24:28 > 0:24:34good friend of mine got killed in 2001. To see his name up there is
0:24:34 > 0:24:43the massive thing for myself personally. In July, it was
0:24:43 > 0:24:48announced that the command unit would leave their Arbroath visit. -
0:24:48 > 0:24:57- the or Arbroath days, as part of the spending review for the armed
0:24:57 > 0:25:06services. It is a fantastic place for the men to come as part of
0:25:06 > 0:25:14their recovery. For now, at the focus is on the official opening of
0:25:14 > 0:25:23the garden. It is the very fitting place to mark Remembrance Day.
0:25:23 > 0:25:28Let us see what kind of weekend we It is not looking too bad at all.
0:25:28 > 0:25:35We can expect pretty settled conditions over the next few days.
0:25:35 > 0:25:39That will start tonight, we should be clear and cool for most of us.
0:25:39 > 0:25:45For a time, some rain pushing into the Borders and pushing up the East
0:25:45 > 0:25:50Side of the coast. But for the bulk of us, clear and cool, with
0:25:50 > 0:25:55overnight temperatures down to four or five degrees Celsius. Looking
0:25:55 > 0:26:00ahead to tomorrow, we have this ridge of high pressure building
0:26:00 > 0:26:07over Ireland and that will bring us some dry and bright weather. In
0:26:07 > 0:26:13terms of the detail, there will be some mist and fog patches, but a
0:26:13 > 0:26:19pretty good day after that. Across the whole of the country, has
0:26:19 > 0:26:27plenty of sunshine on offer. 10 major ways, roundabout below them
0:26:27 > 0:26:33or 12 degrees Celsius. There will be some cloud around. Further north,
0:26:33 > 0:26:38it is the similar story. High temperatures of 10 are relevant
0:26:38 > 0:26:43degrees Celsius. If you're out hill-walking or claiming, you could
0:26:43 > 0:26:51see some showers to the far north of the region, but elsewhere, dry,
0:26:51 > 0:26:58bright and sunny. In the east, sunny again, but those temperatures
0:26:58 > 0:27:05will be a bit cooler on the top of these hills. If you're out on
0:27:05 > 0:27:15inshore waters, you can expect forced three to four north-westerly.
0:27:15 > 0:27:15
0:27:15 > 0:27:20Over in the East, similar conditions. And good visibility.
0:27:20 > 0:27:26Into the evening, it stays dry and Cam, but it will be a cold night,
0:27:26 > 0:27:31down to freezing for many places. If you're out and about on Saturday
0:27:31 > 0:27:37for Bonfire Night, it should be cool and clear, but you might want
0:27:37 > 0:27:44to wrap up, as it will be a bit chilly. On Sunday, again, dry and
0:27:44 > 0:27:49bright conditions. Temperatures similar to Saturday, eleven or 12
0:27:49 > 0:27:59degrees Celsius. Into next week, there is a low pressure in the
0:27:59 > 0:28:01
0:28:01 > 0:28:04Just before seven o'clock, a summary of tonight's top stories...
0:28:04 > 0:28:06President Obama has told the G20 Summit in France that he has
0:28:07 > 0:28:09confidence in the Eurozone's ability to solve its debt crisis.
0:28:10 > 0:28:12David Cameron is confirmed that he is willing to commit more British
0:28:12 > 0:28:15taxpayers' money to the International Monetary Fund. And a
0:28:15 > 0:28:20the Greek government has reversed its decison to hold a referendum on
0:28:20 > 0:28:24an EU rescue package. Most of Scotland's schools could be
0:28:24 > 0:28:26closed by the first strike by teachers in almost a quarter of a
0:28:26 > 0:28:29century. Members of the largest teaching union the EIS have voted
