:01:16. > :01:21.their family. 16-year-old Diane Watson was stabbed to death in her
:01:21. > :01:23.school playground in 1991. But her mother and father say the way the
:01:23. > :01:33.case was reported in the Glasgow Herald newspaper and Marie Claire
:01:33. > :01:35.
:01:35. > :01:39.magazine so upset her son that he committed suicide.
:01:39. > :01:45.She was the Glasgow teenager who died after being attacked in the
:01:45. > :01:51.playground. A Diane Watson was killed in 1991. The murder
:01:51. > :01:55.devastated her family. A case which sold one teenage girl stabbed
:01:55. > :01:59.another on of the school grounds was obviously shocking. It led to
:01:59. > :02:03.two lots of attention - people questioning how it could happen.
:02:03. > :02:08.But when those questions were answered by someone with in their
:02:08. > :02:12.press, it added to the anguish of Diane Watson's family. Barbara
:02:12. > :02:18.Glover was jailed for the murder, but shortly after the case ended,
:02:18. > :02:23.an article appeared in at their Glasgow Herald. It's said to Diane
:02:23. > :02:27.had their smart white socks of the labour aristocracy. Barbara did not.
:02:27. > :02:32.Diane's family were furious, suggesting their daughter had
:02:32. > :02:35.provoked the attack. 20 years later, they are still angry. They travel
:02:35. > :02:42.to London to tell the Leveson Inquiry how the press had changed
:02:42. > :02:47.their lives for the worse. Miss reporting has an effect on the
:02:47. > :02:53.victims. Malicious lies. Malicious falsehood. Just because a person is
:02:53. > :02:56.to cease, you can write what you want? The couple also condemned an
:02:56. > :03:01.article by Marie Claire magazine and this piece in the Sunday Mail.
:03:01. > :03:05.It featured their daughter's killer with the headline, child crime
:03:05. > :03:09.victims turn into criminals. need protection. Just because
:03:09. > :03:16.someone has died, their reputation should not die with a. It should
:03:16. > :03:19.not be used besmirched at the will of some six journalist. The inquiry
:03:19. > :03:25.were told Diane's younger brother was so upset at what had been
:03:25. > :03:30.written, he committed suicide. Sadly, that these malicious lies
:03:30. > :03:35.were too much for our son, Alan, who died with these articles in his
:03:35. > :03:39.hand. Tonight, the companies to publish these articles responded.
:03:39. > :03:42.The Herald says it deeply regrets any action which added to the
:03:42. > :03:45.family's loss and points out the articles were published under
:03:45. > :03:50.previous owners and written by a journalist who no longer works
:03:50. > :03:54.there. The Sunday Mail have no comment. Marie Claire apologised
:03:54. > :03:59.earlier but still regrets the grief a cost to the family. They never
:04:00. > :04:03.meant to add to the suffering. The Watson's want the law changed to
:04:03. > :04:06.help the reputation of victims after they die. They hope that that
:04:06. > :04:08.evidence in this inquiry will help them achieve that.
:04:08. > :04:11.The housing charity, Shelter, is claiming letting agents across
:04:11. > :04:18.Scotland are making illegal charges to prospective tenants. It says
:04:18. > :04:20.many are unaware they don't have to pay the fees.
:04:20. > :04:24.With the housing market drying up, increasing numbers are renting
:04:24. > :04:27.their homes. But the housing charity, Shelter has accused
:04:27. > :04:31.letting agents of "ripping off" tenants by charging premiums on top
:04:31. > :04:34.of their deposit and rent in advance.
:04:34. > :04:38.It carried out a mystery shopper exercise across Scotland, which
:04:38. > :04:43.uncovered what agents were doing: Some charged fees of up to �180 for
:04:43. > :04:48.drawing up a lease. Others up to �88 for obtaining a
:04:48. > :04:51.credit reference which costs the agent a fraction of that.
:04:51. > :05:01.There were cases of �60 charged for an affordability check so the
:05:01. > :05:04.
:05:04. > :05:08.tenant can continue the lease. And there are other examples. We had a
:05:08. > :05:13.deposit of �650. Tenants expect to pay rent and a deposit in advance,
:05:13. > :05:18.but this girl had to pay more even after she moved in. A letter came
:05:18. > :05:23.through, saying would we like to extend and there would be a charge
:05:23. > :05:29.to renew the contract. This was �60. I once worked for a rental company
:05:29. > :05:34.when I was abroad. I know that you have your contract saved on the
:05:34. > :05:37.computer. On you're doing is adding in a date and printing it off.
:05:37. > :05:42.Aberdeen, at this Nigerian student decided he could not afford the
:05:42. > :05:47.flat he was looking at. He had signed nothing, but agents demanded
:05:47. > :05:53.a full year's rent. They try to trap people. It is unfair for other
:05:53. > :05:57.people in my situation. If people care about this, they need to be
:05:57. > :06:03.aware of these kind of traps. stories are typical of those
:06:03. > :06:06.gathered by Shelter as they compiled the report. This is rip-
:06:06. > :06:09.off Scotland just at a time when people were desperately trying to
:06:09. > :06:13.find a house and families are trying to build a home. We know how
:06:13. > :06:17.difficult it is to get a house. People are being forced to find
:06:17. > :06:21.even more money. This is an illegal action which has been taken by
:06:21. > :06:25.letting agents. Land laws organisations say the problem
:06:25. > :06:30.arises because the current law has too many grey areas. If they want
:06:30. > :06:34.clarification. Many agents have sought their own legal advice and
:06:34. > :06:38.their solicitors have told them it is fine to charge the fees. That is
:06:38. > :06:43.why we have campaigned for a clarity in the law in that regard.
:06:43. > :06:46.The shelter says many of the charges levelled on tenants are
:06:46. > :06:51.actually business costs which should be borne by landlords and
:06:51. > :06:55.reflected in rents. Ministers are working on defining what these are
:06:55. > :07:00.legal charges are and they will bring proposals to tackle the
:07:00. > :07:03.problem before Parliament in the new year.

:07:51. > :07:57.It is a depressingly familiar story. An inexperienced driver, an
:07:57. > :08:01.horrific crash, a young life lost. Scott and's roads are safer than
:08:01. > :08:07.they have been for decades. But it is the safety record of young Scots
:08:07. > :08:11.in particular which is the cause of real concern. Stacey Muldoon died
:08:11. > :08:16.on a summer's night three years ago after accepting a lift from a young
:08:16. > :08:20.driver. Her family were left to care for her two young daughters
:08:20. > :08:26.after the car crashed and Stacey was killed. She got into the car
:08:26. > :08:29.with someone she did not know. He took some wrong choices and she
:08:30. > :08:35.died within 50 seconds of him getting in the car with her. He
:08:35. > :08:38.crashed the car. Today's Research says 50% of young people in
:08:38. > :08:44.Scotland fear for their lives at times when they are a passenger in
:08:44. > :08:48.a car driven by a young motorist. 57% said they had been endangered
:08:48. > :08:52.by their friends speeding or drink- driving. It is just pier pressure.
:08:52. > :08:56.If you know what is not safe, but you do not want to tell the others
:08:56. > :09:01.in case they are fine. It is really down to her comfortable you're with
:09:01. > :09:07.your mates. To prevent more scenes like these, campaigners want to see
:09:07. > :09:11.new restrictions on young drivers. Once in a bus driver games their
:09:11. > :09:14.first licence, we would look for a two year period for they would be
:09:14. > :09:19.categorised as a novice driver. They could drive unrestricted
:09:19. > :09:23.without supervision, but subject to certain restrictions to avoid risky
:09:23. > :09:27.situations. Young drivers here are safer than their counterparts
:09:27. > :09:29.elsewhere in Britain but the Scottish Government says it is
:09:29. > :09:33.working to make our roads safer still.
:09:33. > :09:36.A court has heard that a woman accused of murdering her baby son
:09:36. > :09:39.and then pretending he was still alive told police that she couldn't
:09:39. > :09:41.take it any more. Constable Donna McDougall told the High court in
:09:41. > :09:45.Glasgow that Kimberley Hainey made the comment when she was arrested
:09:45. > :09:50.after her son Declan's body was found. She told Constable McDougall
:09:50. > :09:53.that she hadn't deserved the baby and that nobody would believe her.
:09:53. > :09:56.Earlier the court was told Declan may have lain undiscovered for up
:09:56. > :09:59.to seven months. Ms Hainey denies the charges.
:09:59. > :10:03.Reporting Scotland has learned that the death of a teenage girl who was
:10:03. > :10:06.accidently shot by her boyfriend will not be the subject of a fatal
:10:07. > :10:13.accident inquiry. Sophie Taylor, who was 16, was shot by 18-year-old

:10:16. > :10:19.Tomintoul in April, shocked the local community. The Crown Office
:10:19. > :10:25.said that after full and careful consideration, it was decided no

:10:27. > :10:34.Scotland's environmental watchdog has given the MOD until next March
:10:34. > :10:38.to clear Dalgety bay in Fife of all radioactive material. SEPA says if
:10:38. > :10:41.the deadline isn't met, the land will be declared contaminated. The
:10:41. > :10:45.radiation is thought to be linked to the remains wartime aircraft

:11:01. > :11:05.Dalgety beach is an affluent, popular town. In the aftermath of
:11:05. > :11:11.the Second World War, hundreds of RAF planes were dismantled and

:11:15. > :11:19.coated in a radioactive substance. Some of the aircraft were buried
:11:19. > :11:23.under this piece of grass. They were used to help reclaim the land.
:11:23. > :11:26.Scientists think it is possible that levels of erosion have been
:11:26. > :11:30.increasing and that has been causing more particles to be swept
:11:30. > :11:35.round the shore to the beach behind us. The worry is that it could get
:11:35. > :11:40.worse over the winter. Since October, scientists have discovered
:11:40. > :11:44.over 100 new contaminated particles, some more radioactive than ever
:11:44. > :11:48.find before. Now, SEPA say the Ministry of Defence have until
:11:48. > :11:54.March to sorted out or risk having the area radioactive contaminated
:11:54. > :11:57.land. We do welcome the work that the Ministry of Defence have
:11:57. > :12:01.committed. We are looking for further commitments from them so
:12:01. > :12:05.that it means we do not have to designate it. In the absence of
:12:05. > :12:09.those commitments, we will designate it as contaminated land
:12:09. > :12:13.by the end of March. Locals have been living with discoveries of
:12:13. > :12:17.radioactive particles for 20 years, but the last thing they want is a
:12:17. > :12:25.label that will stick forever. something is done, it will be fine.
:12:25. > :12:27.But if not, it will become more dangerous. If they say it is a
:12:28. > :12:32.problem, then the Ministry of Defence have got some questions to
:12:32. > :12:35.answer as to why they have not cleared it up already. So far the
:12:35. > :12:39.seating, there has been no response from the Ministry of Defence to the
:12:39. > :12:42.deadlines. But they say they are continuing to work with SEPA and
:12:42. > :12:44.the local community to find a resolution.
