:00:15. > :00:17.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news:

:00:17. > :00:23.Proposals for same-sex marriage, now the Church of Scotland joins

:00:23. > :00:25.the opposition to the legislation. Breaking news tonight, the SFA is

:00:25. > :00:32.investigating Rangers chairman Craig Whyte after the club admitted

:00:32. > :00:36.he'd been disqualified as a company director. How strong is your

:00:36. > :00:46.average high street cup of coffee? A survey finds some have six times

:00:46. > :00:47.

:00:47. > :00:53.more caffeine than others. Fi have too much caffeine I do get a bit

:00:53. > :01:01.shaky but in this one I do not find how strong it is. I cannot taste it,

:01:01. > :01:04.I cannot tell. And later in the programme. Rescued after two days

:01:04. > :01:14.stranded by the floods. We hear from the family whose home became

:01:14. > :01:15.

:01:15. > :01:18.an island. Good evening. BBC Scotland has learned that the SFA

:01:18. > :01:20.are investigating Rangers owner Craig Whyte after the club admitted

:01:20. > :01:23.yesterday that he had been disqualified as a company director.

:01:23. > :01:26.If they are not satisfied that Whyte falls into their fit and

:01:26. > :01:28.proper person guidelines, they will take action against the club. Our

:01:28. > :01:38.senior football correspondent Chris McLaughlan is here. Chris, what

:01:38. > :01:38.

:01:38. > :01:48.more do we know? He took over the club earlier this year. He is a

:01:48. > :01:50.

:01:50. > :01:59.controversial character. He had been disqualified after being in

:01:59. > :02:07.charge of a company that went into administration. There are fit and

:02:07. > :02:12.proper persons guidelines that the SFA work too. He could be in breach

:02:12. > :02:21.of those if he has been disqualified as a company director

:02:21. > :02:28.in the past five years. The SFA and investigating. The sea have been in

:02:28. > :02:38.dialogue with Rangers and have requested clarification from the

:02:38. > :02:42.

:02:42. > :02:47.club. -- say. What has the reaction been so far? Nothing from Rangers.

:02:47. > :02:53.In terms of possible sanctions there is nothing set in stone here.

:02:53. > :02:58.At the moment this is still an investigation. If Craig Whyte is

:02:58. > :03:03.found to be in breach of the fit and proper persons guidelines then

:03:03. > :03:05.sanctions could be taken. The Fire Brigades Union has called for a

:03:05. > :03:08.thorough investigation into the operation of hydraulic platforms

:03:08. > :03:11.following mechanical failure of one machine during a big fire in the

:03:11. > :03:13.centre of Glasgow earlier this week. A firefighter, suffering from smoke

:03:13. > :03:16.inhalation, couldn't be brought down to safety and was forced to

:03:16. > :03:25.climb down emergency ladders. Our Home Affairs Correspondent, Reevel

:03:25. > :03:30.Alderson reports. It was one of the biggest buyers in Glasgow in recent

:03:30. > :03:37.years. At its height, 100 firefighters were tackling the

:03:37. > :03:42.blaze in a disused warehouse. One firefighter suffered the effects of

:03:42. > :03:47.smoke inhalation but he could not be brought down because of a

:03:47. > :03:51.technical problem. Union leaders say they are concerned. We are

:03:51. > :03:55.concerned about the reliability and suitability of this vehicle. I

:03:55. > :04:03.could take you back five or six years where there have been major

:04:03. > :04:06.breakdowns with them. It is extremely concerning. Strathclyde

:04:07. > :04:13.Fire And Rescue Service says that the machines have been successful

:04:13. > :04:19.in taking part in 70,000 incidents since they were introduced. The

:04:19. > :04:24.cost half a million pounds and the Fire Service says they are used so

:04:24. > :04:27.much that intermittent mechanical failures can be experienced but the

:04:27. > :04:32.union is not convinced. The A have been complaining about the use of

:04:32. > :04:36.these platforms since they were first introduced six years ago.

:04:36. > :04:41.They said this could have been a disaster if the firefighter at the

:04:41. > :04:46.top of the platform had collapsed because of the effects of smoke. If

:04:46. > :04:56.that had happened they would have had to send up two more officers to

:04:56. > :04:58.

:04:58. > :05:06.rescue him. The machine in question is being looked at by a fire safety

:05:06. > :05:10.officers and engineers. The Church of Scotland has told Scottish

:05:10. > :05:12.ministers than the law in Scotland should not be changed to allow gay

:05:13. > :05:15.marriages. This comes as the Kirk submits their formal response to

:05:15. > :05:24.the Scottish Government's consultation on the issue. Aileen

:05:24. > :05:27.Clarke has this exclusive report. The Scottish Government -- the

:05:27. > :05:32.Scottish Church Today told the Scottish Government it could not

:05:32. > :05:37.support the proposals on the marriage. The believe that marriage

:05:37. > :05:42.should be between a man and woman. We believe that is of supreme

:05:42. > :05:47.importance. Same-sex couples are not disadvantaged legally or

:05:47. > :05:56.financially by not being able to be married. There is therefore no need

:05:56. > :06:01.to rush this forward without a much fuller debate. There are 198

:06:01. > :06:09.countries signed up to the United Nations and of those only a small

:06:09. > :06:19.10 have explored the issue of same- sex marriage. A Church of Scotland

:06:19. > :06:22.member was dropping in support of traditional marriage at a meeting.

:06:22. > :06:26.The members of the Church of Scotland will be absolutely

:06:26. > :06:31.delighted that the leaders of the Kerkow have given such a clear and

:06:31. > :06:34.unequivocal response to this consultation. It is based on pure

:06:34. > :06:40.biblical guidelines and endorses all the good that marriage has

:06:40. > :06:44.brought traditionally two Scottish families. It is not pleasing

:06:44. > :06:54.everyone in the Turf. One day Minister says he is disappointed

:06:54. > :07:01.and there is a long way to go. The consultation period ends next week.

:07:01. > :07:04.You're watching Reporting Scotland from BBBC. Still to come on the

:07:04. > :07:07.programme: Post Offices are doubling up as florists, and even

:07:07. > :07:09.butcher's shops, we look at how diversifying has helped their

:07:09. > :07:12.survival. In sport: Neil Lennon defends the Celtic captain after

:07:12. > :07:14.the Europa League defeat by Atletico Madrid. And find out why

:07:14. > :07:22.these rugby players are what Shakespeare called marvellously

:07:22. > :07:25.hairy about the face, all that later. The main road to Argyll

:07:25. > :07:28.won't open again until at least tomorrow because of a landslide. It

:07:28. > :07:32.happened this morning at the Rest And Be Thankful, west of Loch

:07:32. > :07:37.Lomond. It's the third time in four years a landslide has hit the A83

:07:37. > :07:47.and it means long diversions. Our reporter is at the scene. How is it

:07:47. > :07:48.

:07:48. > :07:56.looking tonight? UC the-times in four years. I have been here every

:07:56. > :08:04.single time it has happened. -- You say three times in four years.

:08:04. > :08:11.There has been unusually heavy rain. About one-quarter of the average

:08:11. > :08:18.monthly rainfall has fallen in 48 hours. 80 tons of rock and soil

:08:18. > :08:24.fell down the mountainside. That is the concern now. The mat is being

:08:24. > :08:29.cleared away. Emergency services can get through but safety is a

:08:29. > :08:34.priority. Engineers will do a safety assessment at First Light

:08:34. > :08:40.tomorrow and they will then decide whether the road is safe to open.

:08:40. > :08:46.Diversions at the moment are up to 70 miles at the extreme. This road

:08:46. > :08:51.is a local lifeline. The Scottish Government has spent 700 million

:08:51. > :08:55.on it since the last landslip. Everyone has their fingers crossed

:08:55. > :09:01.that the green light will be given tomorrow morning to get this road

:09:01. > :09:06.reopened. BBC Scotland has learned that four staff at Edinburgh

:09:06. > :09:12.council have been dismissed following uproar into a multi-

:09:12. > :09:17.million-pound housing repair scam. -- Following approach. Around 14

:09:17. > :09:21.other members of staff have been suspended from work while

:09:21. > :09:26.investigations are carried out. A separate police inquiry is also

:09:26. > :09:30.continuing. At Holyrood de First Minister faced his opening round of

:09:30. > :09:39.questions but with the Labour leadership contest entering its

:09:39. > :09:45.final phase, who is best placed to counteract Salmond and the SNP?

:09:45. > :09:55.know he is on the way out! He is indeed but who will replace the

:09:55. > :09:56.

:09:56. > :10:06.Labour leader to tackle Alex Salmond? Here are the main leaders.

:10:06. > :10:16.To one Lamont counts union support among her advantages. -- Joanne

:10:16. > :10:17.

:10:17. > :10:21.Lamont. She says she is ready for Alex Salmond. It is not about

:10:21. > :10:27.having a personal debate with Alex Salmond and to can be loudest and

:10:27. > :10:33.strongest? It is about battling ideas and it is about two futures

:10:33. > :10:43.for Scotland, either inside or outside the United Kingdom.

:10:43. > :10:45.

:10:45. > :10:54.Mackintosh says he can appeal to the next generation. -- Ken. He

:10:54. > :10:58.says he will not get sidetracked by Alex Salmond. People are worried

:10:58. > :11:05.about their jobs, pay freezes and employment. That means ignoring

:11:05. > :11:09.Alex Salmond, it is not about them. Tom Harris at Westminster, he says

:11:10. > :11:17.Labour need a complete overhaul to avoid their relevance. He will

:11:17. > :11:20.confront Alex Salmond, albeit from a distance, for now. He idea of

:11:20. > :11:28.that party being led from Westminster is not new, Alex

:11:28. > :11:33.Salmond did it. I am eager to get stuck into Alex Salmond's nonsense

:11:33. > :11:39.about independence. I think the majority of Scots want to believe

:11:39. > :11:47.in a future for Scotland that is within the United Kingdom. There is

:11:47. > :11:57.a board for union members and affiliates and one third will be

:11:57. > :12:02.parliamentarians. A new ministerial post is being created by the

:12:02. > :12:08.Scottish Government to tackle youth unemployment. The role will come

:12:08. > :12:16.with 30 million to reduce the number of young people out of work

:12:16. > :12:20.in Scotland. The new minister will not be a member of the Cabinet. The

:12:20. > :12:27.amount of caffeine in the coffee from high-street coffee shops they

:12:27. > :12:32.the sixfold according to research by Glasgow University. Some call

:12:32. > :12:38.fees were so high in caffeine that just one Cup exceeded the amount

:12:38. > :12:44.recommended for pregnant women in one day. Over the last decade or so

:12:44. > :12:48.the number of coffee shops has exploded. There are now more than

:12:49. > :12:53.14,000 of them in the UK. But do you know exactly what you are

:12:53. > :13:02.drinking? Glasgow University researchers found a huge difference

:13:02. > :13:11.in the caffeine hit you would get from 20 different coffee shops. It

:13:11. > :13:17.is based on an espresso with 50 milligrams of caffeine. Starbucks

:13:17. > :13:22.has 51 milligrams and cost a 157 milligrams. An independent

:13:22. > :13:32.patisserie had a whopping 322 milligrams. Did the customers know

:13:32. > :13:35.

:13:35. > :13:40.Would it surprise you if I told you it was six times stronger than some

:13:40. > :13:47.of the other coffees you could get around here? Really? That is good

:13:47. > :13:52.coffee. I like it. So you do not mind it being very strong? No, I

:13:52. > :13:56.like strong coffee. If I have too much caffeine I do get a bit shaky.

:13:56. > :14:00.But this one, I do not taste how strong it is. You cannot sell.

:14:00. > :14:04.much caffeine is dangerous to unborn babies but researchers say a

:14:04. > :14:09.pregnant women have no idea how much they are drinking. They should

:14:09. > :14:13.not have more than 200 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is

:14:13. > :14:20.supposedly four cups of coffee. Our data shows that if you went to a

:14:20. > :14:24.certain coffee houses, you could get that and more with one shot of

:14:24. > :14:29.espresso. Are the owners of this cafe told me there were surprised

:14:29. > :14:32.by the high levels of caffeine, but did use a good quality been. Costa

:14:32. > :14:36.said their analysis suggested caffeine levels were lower but

:14:36. > :14:42.decaffeinated drinks were always available.

:14:42. > :14:45.Some of the other stories: A fatal accident inquiry has heard that a

:14:45. > :14:50.teenage girl who it fell to her death in an apparent suicide pact

:14:50. > :14:54.was the victim will sustain bullying. 14-year-old Georgia Rowe

:14:54. > :14:58.and Neve Lafferty, 15, died after falling from the Erskine Bridge in

:14:58. > :15:03.2009. For both were residents at the good shepherd care home in

:15:03. > :15:07.Renfrewshire. To order's key worker, Elizabeth Wilson, told the inquiry

:15:07. > :15:13.the teenager may have felt that staff could not protect her.

:15:13. > :15:16.The threat of strike action by ScotRail train drivers has been

:15:17. > :15:21.lifted after a union reached an agreement on overtime working.

:15:21. > :15:25.Trains have been cancelled. For ScotRail will employ an extra 32

:15:25. > :15:29.drivers next year and the union Aslef will allow its members to

:15:29. > :15:35.continue working on their rest days. Susan Boyle is among the nominees

:15:35. > :15:41.for next year's Grammy awards. The Blackburn born singer is nominated

:15:41. > :15:45.at the -- in the best traditional pop vocal category in The Gift. The

:15:45. > :15:51.winner will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on February

:15:51. > :15:55.12th. Post offices in Scotland are

:15:55. > :15:59.becoming more scarce. If you want a stamp, you might end up looking in

:15:59. > :16:06.a florist, a garage or even a butcher's shop. It is all part of a

:16:06. > :16:11.strategy for to help post offices diversify and survive.

:16:11. > :16:18.A bunch of flowers with your book of stamps. They are all for sale

:16:18. > :16:22.under the same roof. This might seem an unlikely mixture but it is

:16:22. > :16:26.proving popular. I have looked at the market conditions and like

:16:26. > :16:30.every retailer, trade is not what it used to be. I do not think

:16:30. > :16:35.traders can just relied on operating their core businesses.

:16:35. > :16:42.This for me was an opportunity to reinvent my business to attract a

:16:42. > :16:45.lot more retail. Shops like this can benefit from having a post of

:16:45. > :16:48.is on site because it gets people through the door. Customers come

:16:48. > :16:53.into use the post office and then have a look around to see what else

:16:53. > :17:00.they might buy. Times are tough on the high street and every little

:17:00. > :17:06.helps. Here in Sky this post of his doubles up as a garage. It is

:17:06. > :17:10.working well for the business and the community it serves. But not

:17:10. > :17:16.everyone is doing so well. Post offices are being forced to change

:17:16. > :17:24.fast. It is deteriorating. People are using e-mails instead of

:17:24. > :17:28.letters. Consequently, the postal service reduces. They are using

:17:28. > :17:34.cash machines, not coming into the Post Office. Could we lost the TV

:17:34. > :17:37.licences. The end result, a rapid fall in the number of post offices.

:17:38. > :17:44.12 years ago there were almost 2000 across Scotland. By last year, it

:17:44. > :17:48.was just over 1,400, a fall of about 50 each year. Now up

:17:48. > :17:53.partnership is seen as the key to reversing that decline. We have

:17:53. > :17:57.seen our customer profile changed. Customers are able to do so many

:17:57. > :18:01.things in so many different ways now, rather than just go to the

:18:01. > :18:06.Post Office. So it is vital we help to maintain post offices, whether

:18:06. > :18:12.in rural villages or in high street locations. Back at the florists,

:18:12. > :18:19.business is brisk and the postal service, in decline for years, may

:18:19. > :18:24.have found a way to grow again. The sport.

:18:24. > :18:32.Neil Lennon has sprung to the defence of the Celtic captain Beram

:18:32. > :18:38.Kayal. Beram Kayal appeared to duck to avoid being hit by the ball in

:18:38. > :18:47.last night's Celtic Europa League game against Madrid -- Atletico

:18:47. > :18:52.Madrid. When it came, the strike that sank

:18:52. > :18:58.Celtic has a duck to thank for finding the net. The strike was

:18:58. > :19:04.made all the more clinical by Beram Kayal getting out of the way.

:19:04. > :19:08.think it was misjudged. He could not do much about it. He did his

:19:08. > :19:15.best, a split-second reaction. Ultimately that was the difference

:19:15. > :19:20.between the two sides. The visitors came closest first. But buoyed by

:19:20. > :19:26.recent domestic form, Celtic turned the screw. Samaras, though took the

:19:26. > :19:29.best of the opportunity. He was not the only one with hair in hands,

:19:29. > :19:34.his player was stretchered off after twisting his ankle. Early

:19:34. > :19:44.indications are it is not as bad as first feared. Celtic chances kept

:19:44. > :19:44.

:19:45. > :19:54.coming. Just after Cooper thought he had levelled. But he was flagged

:19:55. > :19:56.

:19:56. > :20:01.offside. The replay showed he had no complaints. The result sends the

:20:01. > :20:10.Spaniards through. Celtic must now travel to Italy in two weeks to

:20:10. > :20:14.secured their place in the last 32. St Johnstone manager Steve Lomas

:20:14. > :20:18.will serve a one-match touchline ban after being found guilty of

:20:18. > :20:23.misconduct. He was reported for an offensive gesture here in his first

:20:23. > :20:29.game in charge against Rangers at Ibrox.

:20:29. > :20:33.Scotland's head coach Andy Robinson is hoping to increase his headline

:20:33. > :20:37.backroom staff by bringing in someone with international

:20:37. > :20:42.experience, only after the Six Nations competition ends in March.

:20:42. > :20:45.Robinson says he remains totally committed to the site though he is

:20:45. > :20:53.one of the four runners to manage the British and Irish Lions on

:20:53. > :21:01.their tour in 2013. It is hypothetical. One of my goals is to

:21:01. > :21:05.create as many Scottish lines as possible. For the tour in 2013. --

:21:05. > :21:10.Scottish Alliance. So I am challenging players to become

:21:10. > :21:13.British Lions. It is December 1st and lots of

:21:13. > :21:17.sports men and men in general are breathing a sigh of relief because

:21:18. > :21:23.they can at last shave off their moustaches. The facial hair they

:21:23. > :21:27.have grown throughout the month of November to raise awareness of

:21:27. > :21:37.men's health issues and raise cash, too. Glasgow Warriors even made

:21:37. > :21:56.

:21:56. > :22:00.sporting a moustache compulsory. We decided we were going to support

:22:00. > :22:06.Movember, a charity which tries to raise awareness for prostate cancer

:22:06. > :22:11.and the general men's health issues. That is a brown moustache. Your

:22:11. > :22:20.hair is red! I did not think Ginger facial hair was good. I used some

:22:20. > :22:24.hair dye. You could show that of her liberty would be the role of

:22:24. > :22:34.the dies and 100 for whatever number came up. The Errol Flynn

:22:34. > :22:44.look? Sir Walter Raleigh? Hell's Angels? Geography teacher? And

:22:44. > :22:53.

:22:58. > :23:05.winner of the moustache of the date Award ended will be this gentleman.

:23:05. > :23:11.Look at that brisling, lustrous, proper moustache. It is a great

:23:11. > :23:16.honour. I feel a bit naked without one!

:23:16. > :23:20.I am going to shave mine off afterwards!

:23:20. > :23:24.Firefighters had to use river rescue equipment on what was dry

:23:24. > :23:28.land to get a family to safety near Dumfries. The couple and three

:23:28. > :23:32.children had been cut off by floodwater for two days. The only

:23:32. > :23:36.access road to their cottage was under several feet of water after

:23:36. > :23:41.Tuesday's downpour. For our reporter was there to see it will
