:00:18. > :00:20.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news.

:00:20. > :00:23.Scotland captain and Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher

:00:23. > :00:26.is forced to take an extended break from football due to ill health.

:00:26. > :00:31.The wintry weather's back. Warnings of disruption as snow, wind and

:00:32. > :00:35.rain batter much of the country. And also tonight.

:00:35. > :00:37.Edinburgh's tram fiasco goes all the way to the United Nations as

:00:37. > :00:40.campaigners blame the works for increased pollution.

:00:40. > :00:50.And jail for the owner of this illegal collection of eggs from

:00:50. > :00:52.

:00:52. > :00:55.The captain of the Scotland national football team Darren

:00:55. > :00:57.Fletcher has announced he is taking an extended break from the sport

:00:57. > :01:02.because of serious illness. He's suffering from inflammatory bowel

:01:02. > :01:05.disease. His club Manchester United say he has accepted medical advice

:01:05. > :01:15.to stop playing in order to try to get the condition under control.

:01:15. > :01:22.Our health correspondent Eleanor One of Scotland's youngest ever

:01:22. > :01:29.captains, and still only 27, Darren Fletcher has been capped 27 times.

:01:29. > :01:35.He scored seven goals for Scotland. Last season, he featured at less on

:01:35. > :01:39.the pitch, something put down to a virus by his club Manchester United.

:01:39. > :01:49.But today, it was revealed that he has been suffering from ulcerative

:01:49. > :02:04.

:02:04. > :02:13.colitis. I stick them on the club's But what is ulcerative colitis?

:02:13. > :02:18.They would feel lethargy, feeling it generally run down, feeling

:02:18. > :02:22.unable to work, especially as a professional footballer. We would

:02:22. > :02:28.hope the patient could go into complete remission with medical

:02:28. > :02:32.therapy. We would hope that the patient would have a normal

:02:33. > :02:37.employment potential and normal football career. This is a setback,

:02:37. > :02:43.but it may not be the end of his career. The row work Steve Redgrave

:02:43. > :02:49.of was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 1992, the year he won a

:02:49. > :02:53.gold medal at the Barcelona Olympics. He went on to win at two

:02:53. > :03:03.more gold medals. Darren Fletcher has a lifelong condition, but it

:03:03. > :03:05.may not be our life limiting one. Some breaking news coming to us.

:03:05. > :03:08.The television watchdog Ofcom has launched an investigation into

:03:08. > :03:10.comments made by the Channel 5 presenter Matthew Wright about the

:03:10. > :03:14.murder of teenager Liam Aitchison in Stornoway. The comments were

:03:14. > :03:23.made on his morning talk show and followed the next day by an apology.

:03:24. > :03:31.This is what was said. There has been another murder.

:03:31. > :03:36.first one for 40 years. Then it is another one! I know that some of

:03:36. > :03:40.you have been upset for comments made yesterday about the murder of

:03:40. > :03:47.Liam Aitchison. I would like to apologise if that was the case, no

:03:47. > :03:56.intention on my part to be little the seriousness of it. It is not

:03:56. > :04:02.helped by people running campaigns, grown up, folks. Our correspondant

:04:02. > :04:05.Jamie McIvor joins me. What are Ofcom saying?

:04:05. > :04:12.Matthew Wright may have told viewers are to grow up, but Ofcom

:04:12. > :04:20.has now received more than 2200 complaints about these comments on

:04:20. > :04:28.the right stuff last week. -- on Wright Stuff at last week. They say

:04:28. > :04:38.that the whole issue merits for the ins best addition to see if it has

:04:38. > :04:42.breached any broadcaster's ethics. It is important not to prejudge the

:04:42. > :04:46.outcome. An investigation does not mean that the broadcaster has

:04:46. > :04:52.broken the codes. The point of the investigation will be to decide

:04:52. > :04:58.whether the codes where broken. If Channel 5 are bound to be in the

:04:58. > :05:01.wrong, it could face sanctions or even a fine.

:05:01. > :05:05.Weather warnings are in place again tonight across many parts of

:05:05. > :05:07.Scotland. Wintry conditions and high winds have already been been

:05:07. > :05:14.causing problems and forecasters are predicting greater travel

:05:14. > :05:16.disruption this evening. In a moment, we'll speak to our

:05:16. > :05:19.reporter Willie Johnston who is in Dumfries, but first Raymond

:05:19. > :05:24.Buchanan is halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, at Harthill

:05:24. > :05:30.services on the M8. It is still very difficult, the

:05:30. > :05:35.weather conditions here. As you can see, it is wet and windy. But the

:05:35. > :05:39.M8 is clear and traffic is moving. There has been significant

:05:39. > :05:49.disruption across Scotland because of the high winds that have come in

:05:49. > :05:52.from the west of the country. Winds up to around 80 mph, affecting

:05:52. > :06:01.areas like the Inverclyde coast. We can see some pictures which

:06:01. > :06:11.demonstrate the strength of those gusts, buffeting ships. All sorts

:06:11. > :06:13.

:06:13. > :06:23.of disruption on the roads. Bridges have faced disruption again today.

:06:23. > :06:31.Lots of other bridges have been closed as well. And there was an

:06:31. > :06:37.accident on the A line. A vehicle accident. -- A nine. This means

:06:37. > :06:43.that one of the busiest roads in Scotland is still closed. The

:06:43. > :06:47.finance minister John Swinney was involved in this and his journey

:06:47. > :06:51.had to be abandoned because of the disruption. The hope is that there

:06:51. > :07:00.is strong gusts what is the pit crew out the evening. But there is

:07:00. > :07:03.a warning tomorrow all but sleet and snow in the Central Lowlands,

:07:03. > :07:13.particularly on higher ground. Use common sense tomorrow when it comes

:07:13. > :07:15.to travelling. And the southwest of Scotland has

:07:15. > :07:17.been battered by gale-force winds this afternoon. Willie Johnston is

:07:18. > :07:27.there for us in Dumfries. Willie, the Whitesands area of

:07:28. > :07:31.

:07:31. > :07:36.Dumfries is an area that's often Flooding is a way of life here. But

:07:36. > :07:46.it is getting more freak and added is getting worse. -- a frequent and

:07:46. > :07:46.

:07:46. > :07:53.it is getting worse. Another inquiry and another report and

:07:53. > :07:57.success of Council have debated what to do it for years. The latest

:07:58. > :08:04.proposal is to build a flood it walk along here, possibly made out

:08:04. > :08:07.of glass, and combine it into further environmental work. The

:08:07. > :08:16.thinking is it could protect properties here in all but the very

:08:16. > :08:21.worst floods, perhaps once every 25 years. Two years ago, this woman's

:08:21. > :08:30.shop was flooded and out of action for four months. It is closed again

:08:30. > :08:33.now. She is encouraged by today's move but sceptical. It is

:08:33. > :08:43.manageable and affordable and it would be great if they could do it,

:08:43. > :08:47.but we need action. We need the physical structure put in place.

:08:47. > :08:53.The pass, the council has made proposals which have never seen the

:08:53. > :08:58.light of day. We need to keep the pressure on the council to put the

:08:58. > :09:03.funding in place and see this become a reality. Councillors have

:09:03. > :09:11.now asked for more detailed designs and costings with a for that report

:09:11. > :09:14.due in six months. -- a further report.

:09:14. > :09:23.You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the

:09:23. > :09:33.programme. One year on from a pioneering

:09:33. > :09:35.stopping legislation, or we report. In sport, more reaction to the news

:09:35. > :09:37.of Darren Fletcher's extended break from football.

:09:37. > :09:38.Celtic decide to take their punishment for fans' illicit

:09:38. > :09:40.chanting. And targeted vandalism threatens

:09:40. > :09:44.the future of international cricket in Aberdeen.

:09:44. > :09:46.A man jailed for a gangland killing nine years ago has begun a second

:09:46. > :09:49.appeal against his murder conviction. William Gage was found

:09:49. > :09:52.guilty of shooting Justin McAlroy six times outside his home in

:09:52. > :09:54.Cambuslang in 2002. He was sentenced to at least 20 years in

:09:54. > :10:01.prison, but has always protested his innocence claiming he suffered

:10:01. > :10:11.a miscarriage of justice. Steven Godden reports.

:10:11. > :10:11.

:10:11. > :10:17.William Gage's legal team arrived at their court of appeal. Justin

:10:17. > :10:23.McIlroy was shot repeatedly in the street outside his Cambuslang home.

:10:23. > :10:29.It was described as a gangland execution. In 2004, William Gage

:10:29. > :10:35.was tried, convicted and ordered to spend at least 20 years in jail. It

:10:35. > :10:40.is an outcome he has always disputed. After one a failed appeal,

:10:40. > :10:45.the courts have been ordered to look at his case again. It has been

:10:45. > :10:52.at nine it long hard years for William Gage and his family. His

:10:52. > :10:59.father has died in that time. And his family hope that justice will

:10:59. > :11:09.be done. At the original trial, Justin McIlroy's wife identified

:11:09. > :11:15.

:11:15. > :11:20.William Gage. At the hearing today, her evidence was questioned. It was

:11:20. > :11:25.said she had only had a fleeting glance. The Defence challenges

:11:25. > :11:33.claims about a white car that prosecutors argued was the getaway

:11:33. > :11:42.car. They say there were substantial inconsistencies in the

:11:42. > :11:45.DNA evidence. The evidence is expected to last several days of.

:11:45. > :11:48.BBC Scotland has learned a United Nations committee is to scrutinise

:11:48. > :11:52.Edinburgh City Council's handling of the capital's controversial tram

:11:52. > :11:55.project. The case is being brought by campaigners who believe the

:11:55. > :12:00.scheme has resulted in an increase in pollution levels in residential

:12:00. > :12:04.areas. Our transport correspondent, David Miller, reports.

:12:04. > :12:09.Pollution levels in central Edinburgh or monitored by the City

:12:09. > :12:13.Council. But residents are worried about the amount of pollution they

:12:13. > :12:18.are having to breathe. They say their concerns have not been taken

:12:18. > :12:22.seriously enough. It does seem bizarre that a group of residents

:12:22. > :12:26.are having to take their case to a United Nations committee, but this

:12:26. > :12:35.is a reminder of the strength of feeling which the tram project

:12:35. > :12:39.continues to arouse. We are monitoring continuously...

:12:39. > :12:48.campaigners say that there monitoring Bruce that diverting

:12:48. > :12:53.traffic into residential areas could be threatening health.

:12:53. > :13:00.centre of Edinburgh is a very small place. This policy takes commercial

:13:00. > :13:05.traffic from the centre and put it through residential areas. That

:13:05. > :13:13.means more noise and a more pollution. This retired engineer

:13:13. > :13:18.has convinced the you -- the United Nations committee to look at their

:13:18. > :13:28.issue. Our message will be that we have not been fairly treated. We

:13:28. > :13:28.

:13:28. > :13:36.have not been given the opportunity to present a case, and the council

:13:37. > :13:46.are asking as judge and jury. Edinburgh city council say that

:13:46. > :13:55.monitoring is in place and that pollution is with them acceptable

:13:55. > :13:58.levels. -- within acceptable levels. Craig Whyte, the owner of Rangers

:13:58. > :14:02.Football Club, has appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court to contest a

:14:02. > :14:05.case over an alleged unpaid 90,000 repair bill at his castle. Mr Whyte,

:14:05. > :14:08.39, owner of Tixway UK Ltd, ordered supplies from One Stop Roofing to

:14:08. > :14:11.repair the roof at his property in Grantown on Spey. It is claimed

:14:11. > :14:18.that Tixway failed to maintain a repayment plan agreed at the start

:14:18. > :14:21.of the 2010. Mr Whyte is disputing the claim at a civil case.

:14:21. > :14:25.A man has been jailed for stealing eggs from some of the rarest birds

:14:25. > :14:27.in the UK, many of them in Scotland. Matthew Gonshaw built up an illegal

:14:27. > :14:37.collection of almost 700 eggs from endangered species such as the

:14:37. > :14:38.

:14:38. > :14:46.osprey and the golden eagle. Craig Anderson reports.

:14:46. > :14:56.This is the hall a mast. Exit from the rarest birds in Britain, red

:14:56. > :15:00.kites, ospreys, peregrine falcons. Many snatched from Scottish site.

:15:00. > :15:06.This clutch of the three X was taken to the Western Isles in

:15:06. > :15:16.Scotland. This was just one week from hatching. The collector has

:15:16. > :15:17.

:15:17. > :15:27.removed a large Eagle egg. This osprey nest behind me was where

:15:27. > :15:28.

:15:29. > :15:35.Matthew Gonshaw targeted. Much to the annoyance of those trying to

:15:35. > :15:39.protect the birds. People like him come to the north of Scotland, they

:15:39. > :15:45.plunder wild bird eggs. The target their re-arrest ones and the most

:15:45. > :15:50.vulnerable. He admitted 10 charges in a London court today and was

:15:50. > :15:56.sentenced to the maximum of six months in prison. He has already

:15:56. > :16:02.served a three-year jail terms for similar crimes and is described as

:16:02. > :16:05.obsessed with his hobby. There have been calls for an ASBO to be served

:16:05. > :16:08.to stop him travelling around the country.

:16:08. > :16:11.Some of the other stories across Scotland this Tuesday.

:16:11. > :16:14.Police say a fire in Elgin in which a man sustained extensive burns is

:16:14. > :16:17.being treated as suspicious. Four other people were treated for minor

:16:17. > :16:27.burns and the effects of breathing in smoke following the incident in

:16:27. > :16:32.

:16:32. > :16:34.A man has been jailed for three years for trying to set his

:16:34. > :16:37.girlfriend's killer on fire, by throwing petrol over him. Allister

:16:37. > :16:40.Gibb threw the petrol over Robert Chalmers outside the High Court in

:16:40. > :16:42.Edinburgh in May. Chalmers had been convicted that day of killing

:16:42. > :16:46.Samantha Wright and dumping her body in a wheely bin.

:16:46. > :16:48.A hearing is underway at the Court of Session to decide whether the

:16:48. > :16:52.construction of the Aberdeen bypass should go ahead. Campaigners

:16:52. > :16:56.opposed to the project say they are confident they can block it. Other

:16:57. > :16:59.road users and business leaders are angry about the latest delays.

:16:59. > :17:03.It has been a year since stalking became a criminal offence in

:17:03. > :17:07.Scotland. Already, police say they have dealt with over 400 incidents,

:17:07. > :17:17.affecting both men and women. Many of which have led to successful

:17:17. > :17:20.

:17:20. > :17:29.prosecutions. Rebecca was docked by her ex-husband. We have changed her

:17:29. > :17:37.name to protect her from her ex- husband. I was and a refuge and I

:17:37. > :17:45.had to come out because he found out where we wear. He continued to

:17:45. > :17:52.harassed her. You feel like a prisoner. You almost have to

:17:52. > :18:02.reinvent yourself. She has now taken advantage of the new

:18:02. > :18:03.

:18:03. > :18:13.legislation and he has now been stopped. Most of the time, people

:18:13. > :18:19.

:18:19. > :18:29.will stop someone they know, but an was the victim of a stranger.

:18:29. > :18:32.

:18:32. > :18:42.rape and torture was what drove them. The new legislation has been

:18:42. > :18:46.

:18:46. > :18:51.it will come to a are the women's interest groups. It has been so

:18:51. > :18:54.successful that similar changes to the lot are being thought of in

:18:54. > :18:57.England and Wales. As we heard earlier, the Scotland

:18:57. > :19:07.captain Darren Fletcher is to take an extended break from football for

:19:07. > :19:07.

:19:08. > :19:10.health reasons. Nor, it is certainly not.

:19:10. > :19:12.The Manchester United midfielder is suffering with a chronic

:19:13. > :19:15.inflammatory bowel condition, which he has had for the past year.

:19:15. > :19:19.Despite the illness, Fletcher has made 15 appearances this season,

:19:19. > :19:23.five of those in a Scotland shirt, as he tried to lead the country to

:19:23. > :19:28.the finals of Euro 2012. The football world has responded to

:19:28. > :19:30.the news. Team-mate and England striker Michael Owen tweeted,

:19:31. > :19:34."Wishing Fletch all the best in his recovery - top bloke."

:19:34. > :19:38.And Rio Ferdinand also felt moved to post, "We are going to miss

:19:38. > :19:41.Fletcher. I hope he comes back fitter and stronger."

:19:41. > :19:43.Scotland manager Craig Levein has also made this statement on the SFA

:19:43. > :19:46.website... "He is one of the most

:19:46. > :19:49.inspirational players I have had the pleasure of working with and I

:19:49. > :19:54.sincerely hope this time off, allied to the support of his family,

:19:54. > :19:57.will enable him to make a full recovery."

:19:57. > :20:02.Celtic will not appeal against a fine of 15,000 euros imposed by

:20:02. > :20:05.UEFA for "illicit" chanting by their fans. It occurred at the

:20:05. > :20:10.recent Europa League match against Rennes at Parkhead. Celtic say such

:20:10. > :20:13.behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

:20:13. > :20:16.Leigh Griffiths has been given a one-match ban for making an

:20:16. > :20:19.offensive gesture during last Saturday's home defeat to Rangers.

:20:19. > :20:28.The Hibs striker, currently on loan from Wolves, will miss this

:20:28. > :20:31.weekend's SPL visit to Aberdeen. Aberdeen manager Craig Brown hopes

:20:31. > :20:35.the disappointment of losing a two- goal advantage at the weekend will

:20:35. > :20:38.inspire his players to better things tonight against St Johnstone.

:20:38. > :20:41.The Dons let St Mirren back into the match at Pittodrie, but the

:20:41. > :20:51.point earned in the 2-2 draw moved Aberdeen off the bottom of the

:20:51. > :20:58.table. I do not have any complaints about their attitude. Although we

:20:58. > :21:03.did lose the two-goal lead, we have ourselves recover from a couple of

:21:03. > :21:06.two-goal deficit. Circumstances were unfortunate on Saturday.

:21:06. > :21:09.And you can hear live commentary of St Johnstone versus Aberdeen

:21:09. > :21:13.tonight on Sportsound BBC Radio Scotland 810mw, online and on

:21:13. > :21:16.digital. Vandals have struck at Aberdeen's

:21:16. > :21:19.Mannofield Cricket Ground, meaning it will not be able to host two

:21:19. > :21:22.Scotland matches next year. A potent weed killer deliberately

:21:22. > :21:32.sprayed on the pitch has also put in doubt a one-day match against

:21:32. > :21:34.

:21:34. > :21:44.Canada due to be played in July. The groundsman inspects for himself

:21:44. > :21:50.the damage done to his beloved cricket pitch. Had they just been

:21:50. > :21:54.vandalism for vandalism sake it would have been bad, but not so bad,

:21:54. > :22:02.but this is very deliberate. It has been booked on the patches where

:22:02. > :22:07.the ball will bounce. It will now mean we cannot host to Scotland

:22:07. > :22:14.matches that we were meant to host. They will now have to go to another

:22:15. > :22:20.ground. A ground has built up a proud reputation for hosting

:22:20. > :22:29.Scotland internationals. It is also the wicket when the great Donald

:22:29. > :22:34.Bradman scored his last first-class century. It will be such a shame

:22:34. > :22:40.for the Aberdeen public not to have another Scotland game there next

:22:40. > :22:45.year. The police are now investigating and there is the race

:22:45. > :22:49.against time for it to be fit for a one-day international against

:22:49. > :22:52.Canada at in July of next year. Edinburgh is playing host to some

:22:52. > :22:54.of the world's most talented young racing drivers this week. The Young

:22:54. > :22:57.Driver Excellence Academy is coaching them in the skills which

:22:57. > :23:05.could make them the future stars of Formula One. Julie Peacock has been

:23:05. > :23:10.finding out what it takes to make it in the world of racing. It is

:23:10. > :23:15.one of the most physically demanding sports and the world.

:23:15. > :23:21.During the course of the race, the drivers have to put up with very

:23:21. > :23:26.hot temperatures. Here in this heat chamber, the young trainee drivers

:23:26. > :23:36.are getting a taste of what they might have to expect. It takes in

:23:36. > :23:43.

:23:43. > :23:48.thickness, psychology and nutrition. The aim of the programme is to do

:23:48. > :23:58.something for the entire motor sport. They also raise their game

:23:58. > :23:58.

:23:58. > :24:06.and also learn the need for safety. The Academy features 18 of the

:24:06. > :24:14.world's best drivers, including Louis, who is been signed by the

:24:14. > :24:19.Red Bull racing team. You need a lot of areas to perform, it is not

:24:19. > :24:26.just about racing, it is even down to things like media training.

:24:26. > :24:32.Everything has to be 100 %. The air getting support from those who have
