:00:27. > :00:33.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. To date: unemployment is up by 19,000.

:00:33. > :00:40.Family's say that they are feeling the squeeze. You have to divide the

:00:41. > :00:50.money between your mortgage, fuel bills, and food troubles. I shop

:00:50. > :00:53.around for food which I never used to do. A trial hears how this

:01:26. > :01:33.economy is showing signs of a rallying. Next figures today. The

:01:33. > :01:39.unemployment rate has shown no signs of falling. Another 19,000

:01:39. > :01:44.people joined Scotland's dole queues during the period. How does

:01:44. > :01:51.that compare with the rest of the UK? The job market was still better

:01:51. > :01:57.than in most English regions. But 8.6 % of our workforce is looking

:01:57. > :02:03.for a job - and lost than the UK as a whole. The sluggish economy does

:02:03. > :02:09.not just impact on those who have lost their jobs but all of us.

:02:09. > :02:15.Nancy is feeling the squeeze. She has a job and a family. In these

:02:16. > :02:21.tough times she is doing what many Scots do. Watching what she spends.

:02:21. > :02:28.The mortgage is my biggest outgoing and that will go up this year. I am

:02:28. > :02:34.saving for a wedding because I want to get married at the sea here. And

:02:34. > :02:41.the food shopping is a massive concern. I shop around which I

:02:41. > :02:49.never used to do. Now I tend to have to go into a few different

:03:43. > :03:49.administration. Conditions are not easy. 2012 will be difficult. This

:03:49. > :03:54.recession is rooted and high levels of debt and stress in the banking

:03:54. > :04:02.sector. There will be slow growth and if things go badly wrong in the

:04:02. > :04:07.euro-zone we could be dragged into A but Scotland's economy actually

:04:49. > :04:54.standing over the body with a knife and covered in blood. Craig Roy

:05:27. > :05:34.jury that his client did not dispute carrying out the attack.

:05:34. > :05:40.The first witness was Craig Roy's partner, who claimed he received a

:06:48. > :06:56.150 extra staff will be recruited in order to reduce the hours of

:06:56. > :07:04.existing crews. The long-term solution is to move towards a 37.5

:07:15. > :07:20.Still to come: Scottish Water will use hydropower and to generate more

:07:20. > :07:25.of its own electricity. And in sport we speak to Andy Murray as he

:13:59. > :14:06.experience. Shetland Islands Council is getting

:14:06. > :14:09.its finances in order after a damning report. They must learn to

:14:09. > :14:14.manage their finances and live within their means.

:14:14. > :14:18.An Edinburgh company has been fined six 1/2 1,000 after one of its

:14:27. > :14:30.You will find more on those and other stories on the website.

:14:30. > :14:35.Looking at the night sky has always been popular with astronomy

:14:35. > :14:43.enthusiasts. But a new television programme has been bringing this to

:14:43. > :14:48.a wider audience. This week's Stargazing Live programme has

:14:48. > :14:53.gained a lot of interest. Our correspondent has muscled in

:14:53. > :14:57.amongst the telescopes in Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens.

:14:57. > :15:03.Normally at sunset, the visitors here are rushing out of the gardens

:15:03. > :15:07.and the gates are closed. But tonight a lot of the public are in

:15:07. > :15:13.the gardens for a lovely feast of astronomy and dark sky events. It

:15:13. > :15:17.has all been designed along with the Royal Observatory, the National

:15:17. > :15:23.Museum for Scotland and also a local us on the society. It is all

:15:23. > :15:29.to help with people becoming enthusiastic about astronomy. Even

:15:29. > :15:34.though there are some showers, there are indoor activities ranging

:15:34. > :15:39.from introduction to the night sky and meteorites. It is all geared up

:15:39. > :15:45.to find an interest in astronomy. This is what we all hope to see on

:15:45. > :15:51.a clear right across the country. Stars, galaxies and planets. --

:15:51. > :15:58.night. For most people living in towns and cities, light pollution

:15:58. > :16:04.obscures the light show. This is the largest telescope we have here.

:16:04. > :16:09.It was built in 1928. Edinburgh's Royal Observatory, they

:16:09. > :16:12.are keen to build a network for looking at the night sky. We are

:16:12. > :16:17.looking for people to look around their local community and to

:16:17. > :16:22.nominate new places that are great for star-gazing. They can visit our

:16:22. > :16:28.website and find out how to do that there. We really hope that we get

:16:28. > :16:34.this network of dark skies services. The north and west of Scotland have

:16:34. > :16:39.some of the best dark skies in Europe. In Sky, they have already

:16:39. > :16:46.identified nine of the best sites for star-gazing. We have lots of

:16:46. > :16:51.enthusiasm to take that forward and develop it. The night was not the

:16:51. > :16:55.best, but even so on nights of patchy cloud, planets and

:16:55. > :17:00.consolations can be seen. You can see the Milky Way, of which people

:17:00. > :17:05.do not see in are in areas. You come to an area like this and you

:17:05. > :17:10.can see much more. And local businesses can also see the

:17:10. > :17:15.potential for encouraging more winter visitors. I think this is a

:17:15. > :17:23.great initiative for us because it will drop business to the area in

:17:23. > :17:28.what is traditionally a quiet season. The weather has been about

:17:28. > :17:32.next year here -- here in Edinburgh, but generally across Scotland there

:17:32. > :17:36.is a wonderful range of observatories that can help you get

:17:36. > :17:42.started. There are lots of events going on around Scotland over the

:17:42. > :17:49.next two weeks, so if you want to find out what is going on near you,

:17:49. > :17:58.log on to the website below. I will be back later for a full weather

:17:58. > :18:03.update. Now the sport.

:18:03. > :18:09.Andy Murray's pursued of his first grand-slam title continues early

:18:09. > :18:13.tomorrow morning. It is the world - - he takes on France's Edouard

:18:13. > :18:17.Roger Vasselin in round two of Australia -- the Australian Open.

:18:17. > :18:25.He is not the only Scot looking forward to playing a second round

:18:25. > :18:34.match in Melbourne. It is match point. Column Fleming

:18:34. > :18:40.crouches in silent anticipation. -- Colin. Then he pounces. Yes, all

:18:40. > :18:47.very dramatic as he and his partner when it through to the second round.

:18:47. > :18:51.This was at the expense of their American competitors. The last few

:18:51. > :18:57.results started to give us some self-belief. Hopefully with that

:18:57. > :19:02.hard work, we can go on and achieve more. You probably do not know much

:19:02. > :19:08.about Edouard Roger Vasselin, do not worry, nor does Andy Murray.

:19:08. > :19:15.has been on the tour for a while. He is playing the best tennis of

:19:15. > :19:20.his career at the moment. It will be a tough one. It took Andy Murray

:19:20. > :19:25.over three hours to win his first round match. He will be hoping to

:19:25. > :19:28.make quicker work tomorrow. One of the Hearts players has told

:19:28. > :19:32.BBC Scotland that a lack of information from the club over late

:19:32. > :19:36.payment of wages was the reason they took their issue to their

:19:36. > :19:41.union. He says that they are now happy, even though the Premier

:19:41. > :19:45.League club bought -- club were later again.

:19:45. > :19:48.Wages for January might have been eight hours late going into Hearts

:19:48. > :19:56.players bank accounts this month, but that is not the main concern of

:19:56. > :20:04.Kevin Cowle. For me personally, that is the end of the matter. The

:20:04. > :20:07.club has assured us we will get our wages on time. Yesterday it was the

:20:08. > :20:12.news that we had been charged by the SPL for being late, but that is

:20:12. > :20:22.a matter for the club and the SPL. The players are satisfied and have

:20:22. > :20:24.

:20:24. > :20:28.got their wages. -- Kevin Kyle. Kevin Powell has experienced

:20:28. > :20:34.something similar at Sunderland, but there they were kept abreast of

:20:34. > :20:37.the situation. It is the not knowing. If someone had come and

:20:38. > :20:41.told us this situation, a lot of us might have understood. The fact

:20:41. > :20:46.that we were not told what was happening, that was the most

:20:46. > :20:51.frustrating thing. Kyle has been sidelined for a year with a hip

:20:51. > :20:56.problem. His main concern is surgery which he hopes will save

:20:56. > :21:00.his career. He says he would not mind so it -- signing for Hearts

:21:00. > :21:05.again. If I can get paid a reasonable wage and still be part

:21:05. > :21:11.of the team, I would love to do that. It will all depend on whether

:21:11. > :21:17.I am fit and able. I would love first and foremost to try and

:21:17. > :21:21.extend my career at Hearts. I am sure the Hearts fans would welcome

:21:21. > :21:27.back a fully fit Kevin Powell. Alas available place in the

:21:43. > :21:48.Dundee. This strike helped the side to victory. St Mirren also

:21:48. > :21:54.progressed, this call was enough to see them safely through.

:22:11. > :22:16.Glasgow School of Art has been awarded one of the largest grants

:22:17. > :22:22.of its kind to work out why the city has produced so many

:22:22. > :22:32.successful contemporary artists. The money, more than 120,000, will

:22:32. > :22:37.be used to investigate archives dating back three decades.

:22:37. > :22:43.The winner of the 2011 Turner Prize... He may not have known it

:22:43. > :22:49.at the time, but Glasgow Karla Black and -- Martin Boyce won a

:22:49. > :22:53.place in art history last weekend as well as their Turner Prize. Many

:22:53. > :22:57.commentators are wondering what is going on in Glasgow. So many

:22:57. > :23:03.artists have come from this small corner of the city that one of

:23:03. > :23:13.German curator even dubbed it, the Glasgow miracle. But perhaps this

:23:13. > :23:14.

:23:15. > :23:24.success is more practical than that. A thriving art school helps a

:23:25. > :23:26.

:23:26. > :23:32.thriving arts centre. Today's grant will allow it the study of archives.

:23:32. > :23:42.We knew that Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Fabius people, we knew

:23:42. > :23:42.

:23:42. > :23:49.that Damien Hirst -- Damien Hirst was here. None of this is remember

:23:49. > :23:58.it. For artists to know that there is that lineage, actually changes

:23:58. > :24:03.things. Parties and openings like this one work all important.

:24:03. > :24:07.fact that the art school is just up there and Sauchiehall Street is

:24:07. > :24:17.there, it was a bridge between the town and gown and it made the arts

:24:17. > :24:23.more accessible for people. Also, it was a nice place to eat! Much

:24:23. > :24:33.has changed over the years and this study will help identify a those

:24:33. > :24:39.

:24:39. > :24:43.It has been quite a nice day through eastern areas, but this

:24:43. > :24:47.evening we will see a scattering of showers across the North and the

:24:47. > :24:57.West. It will start to than Colder. If we look at the picture for the

:24:57. > :24:58.

:24:58. > :25:02.rest of the night, we see plenty of scattered showers. Where these

:25:02. > :25:08.showers fall on frozen surfaces, there will be a risk of ice.

:25:08. > :25:12.Tomorrow morning will have a nice start. This will not last. We will

:25:12. > :25:16.start to see showers gathering in the West. There will be an

:25:16. > :25:25.increasing risk of snow over the hills. The Met Office have issued a

:25:25. > :25:29.yellow warning. If we start the tour across southern areas, there

:25:30. > :25:36.will be a scattering of showers across the West and the south-west.

:25:36. > :25:40.Some snow showers across the Southern Uplands. They it will be

:25:40. > :25:49.it drifting snow as well in the strong to deal forced -- gale-force

:25:49. > :25:54.winds. Deal forced -- storm force winds across the northern isles.

:25:54. > :26:01.That is how it is looking. For the rest of the day, it looks like we

:26:01. > :26:08.will see it wind at times, some of it pretty strong. The pressure

:26:08. > :26:13.charts are showing a good deal of Friday sunshine for eastern areas.
