0:00:11 > 0:00:16Will onto a Reporting Scotland. But tonight - it will be good for you.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20Alex Salmond's message to the English over independence.

0:00:20 > 0:00:24The Scottish oil boss who helped security deal worth billions in

0:00:24 > 0:00:28India has his 3 million bonus a vetoed by shareholders will stop we

0:00:28 > 0:00:35hear of one woman's battle with anorexia as a new unit opens they

0:00:35 > 0:00:40help people with eating disorders. I wanted to get better so much but

0:00:40 > 0:00:44the voice in my head of the illness wanted to kill me.

0:00:44 > 0:00:51For that in the driving seat for the first Six Nations as Andy

0:00:51 > 0:00:55Robinson names his new captain. Good for Scotland, good for England

0:00:55 > 0:00:59as well. That is the message the First Minister will deliver in a

0:01:00 > 0:01:02speech and independence in London tonight. Alex Salmond will use the

0:01:02 > 0:01:06occasion to argue that an independent Scotland was set the

0:01:06 > 0:01:10standard for what he describes as progressive opinion south of the

0:01:10 > 0:01:18border. In Edinburgh, he outlined his plans for an independence

0:01:18 > 0:01:22referendum. A man with a message. In Scotland,

0:01:22 > 0:01:27Alex Salmond has been laying the foundations for his independence

0:01:27 > 0:01:31referendum. This evening, the First Minister is in England preparing to

0:01:31 > 0:01:36make a case souther the border. He says England should not be afraid

0:01:36 > 0:01:41of Scotland going its own way. In fact, tonight he will tell an

0:01:41 > 0:01:43audience in London it will be good for them. I thought coming to

0:01:44 > 0:01:48England I would be positive about the future and about the future of

0:01:48 > 0:01:55Scotland. I'm also say why I think it will also be good for England.

0:01:55 > 0:02:00An entirely positive message. Salmond knows England and England

0:02:00 > 0:02:07is now getting to know Alex Salmond. Politically, he now recognises what

0:02:07 > 0:02:12appeals to an English electorate. Do not let these three parties ruin

0:02:13 > 0:02:18your National Health Service. and west, we have been all over

0:02:18 > 0:02:24England. We do not get a great deal out of them and they may as well be

0:02:24 > 0:02:27independent of us. I would prefer them to stick with us. I think

0:02:27 > 0:02:32English people should get a say on that is well because it affects us

0:02:32 > 0:02:39just as much as them. The way things are these days, it is best

0:02:40 > 0:02:43they stick together. Up Alex Salmond? I have no idea. This trip

0:02:43 > 0:02:49to London as a return to familiar territory. He cut his political

0:02:49 > 0:02:54teeth at Westminster. If England seems more relaxed than Scotland

0:02:54 > 0:02:57about independence, why is he so keen to court opinion here?

0:02:57 > 0:03:02starting gun has been fired on the referendum campaign even though it

0:03:02 > 0:03:06is more than two years' away and minds are focused on the referendum

0:03:06 > 0:03:12date north and south of the border. He has always seen himself as a UK

0:03:12 > 0:03:16politician who has the court the UK public. Tonight, the First Minister

0:03:16 > 0:03:19will talk of co-operation between England and Scotland. Behind the

0:03:19 > 0:03:28warm words, battle-lines are already being drawn up on both

0:03:28 > 0:03:32sides. That is the view from the south.

0:03:32 > 0:03:37The First Minister will be back in Edinburgh tomorrow launching his

0:03:37 > 0:03:43consultation document on Scottish independence. What sort of detail

0:03:43 > 0:03:48will be included in this document? A fair bet but it is a consultation

0:03:48 > 0:03:52paper, not the final deal. There will probably be at draft bill

0:03:52 > 0:03:55attached to the paper suggesting there will be one question and

0:03:55 > 0:04:01independence but it also asked for views on whether there should be a

0:04:01 > 0:04:06second back up question on the issue of devolution max. That is a

0:04:06 > 0:04:12big controversy over the Scottish and UK governments. He has a firm

0:04:12 > 0:04:15preference for the autumn of 2014. Some say it should be earlier.

0:04:15 > 0:04:22These are preferences and that is the beginning of serious

0:04:22 > 0:04:26negotiation? It is exactly that. They want this to be accepted by

0:04:26 > 0:04:33all and for the outcome of the process to be valid. At the moment,

0:04:33 > 0:04:37the UK Government said would be illegal under present powers.

0:04:37 > 0:04:42This all be covered on Reporting Scotland tomorrow and the quick

0:04:42 > 0:04:46mention of a special programme tomorrow night. This is on BBC

0:04:46 > 0:04:51Scotland just after the news, Glenn Campbell will chair a debate

0:04:51 > 0:04:55following the consultation. At court has heard that the

0:04:55 > 0:05:00teenager accused of murdering the SCOPE Royd school boy, Jack Frew,

0:05:00 > 0:05:07showed no sign of any mental health issues when he was examined by a

0:05:07 > 0:05:11psychiatrist. Craig Roy admits killing the boy but denies murder.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15Was this teenager's death murder are culpable homicide? That is the

0:05:15 > 0:05:20question put by the defence QC to the jury at the High Court in

0:05:20 > 0:05:25Glasgow today. To help them decide, at they have been hearing evidence

0:05:25 > 0:05:31about the accused's state of mind. 19-year-old Craig Roy who described

0:05:31 > 0:05:35himself to a psychiatrist as shy and tenet. He admits stabbing 16-

0:05:35 > 0:05:42year-old Jack Frew at in this we did they react in East Kilbride in

0:05:42 > 0:05:4720th May 10, but denies murder. The forensic psychiatrist told the

0:05:47 > 0:05:51court he first examined Craig Roy seven days after Jack Frew's death.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55Min 18-year-old told a psychiatrist that Jack Frew was a sex pest who

0:05:55 > 0:05:59threaten to expose a brief affair they had had. He went on to tell

0:06:00 > 0:06:05the doctor he had taken a kitchen knife from home as he felt he had

0:06:05 > 0:06:08to threaten and intimidate him to show how he was strong himself.

0:06:08 > 0:06:14The psychiatrist told the court that he was called back to reassess

0:06:14 > 0:06:20Craig Roy over the question of a personality disorder. He said he

0:06:20 > 0:06:24was surprised by this. Having met him the first time, he said he

0:06:24 > 0:06:28seemed like a nice young man who got on well with people. If he had

0:06:29 > 0:06:38a personality disorder, it would be pervasive and problematic and

0:06:39 > 0:06:42

0:06:42 > 0:06:48affect all areas of his life. He The court also heard that Craig Roy

0:06:48 > 0:06:55was upset by what he had done and was haunted by Jack Frew's death.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59Still to come: celebrating the legendary foxing or Woody Guthrie's

0:06:59 > 0:07:02likes with Glasgow. His granddaughter retrace his steps in

0:07:02 > 0:07:06the city. We will be heaving from the new

0:07:06 > 0:07:10captain of Scotland's rugby team and the man who appointed him. We

0:07:10 > 0:07:16also hear from Andy Murray and the man who he will have to beat to

0:07:16 > 0:07:22reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26One of Scotland's top businessmen has had his 3.5 million bonus

0:07:26 > 0:07:30package withdrawn after shareholders objected. Sir Bill

0:07:30 > 0:07:38Gammell, chairman of Cairn Energy, was hoping to be rewarded for

0:07:38 > 0:07:40pulling off a multi-billion pounds oil deal.

0:07:40 > 0:07:50Cairn Energy has been hugely successful drilling for oil under

0:07:50 > 0:07:55the Indian desert. It is now worth 8.5 billion, most of that sort of

0:07:55 > 0:07:59to another in the in form. Next week, shareholders get to vote for

0:07:59 > 0:08:04a payout from a profit, but they're not happy about the payout to the

0:08:04 > 0:08:08chairman, Sir Bill Gammell. He first made his name playing rugby

0:08:08 > 0:08:14for Scotland. As he moved from Chief Executive to chairman last

0:08:14 > 0:08:21year, he was paid a one-off 1.4 million. For sealing the deal and

0:08:21 > 0:08:26India, company directors said he deserves more. At 2 million --

0:08:26 > 0:08:312.5 million payment plus a further 1 million payment. That proposal

0:08:31 > 0:08:35has been withdrawn from next week's special shareholder meeting because

0:08:35 > 0:08:40the shareholders Arran revolt, advised by a specialist watchdog on

0:08:40 > 0:08:45executive pay. It is excessive in comparative

0:08:45 > 0:08:54terms. It is partly to do with the fact he is being compensated for

0:08:54 > 0:09:00effectively doing his job. The cases be made this week for curbing

0:09:00 > 0:09:04executive payouts. There is a disconnect between top pay and

0:09:04 > 0:09:10company performance. Something must be done. One of his criticisms is

0:09:10 > 0:09:13that company bosses are too often rewarded for failure. Say what you

0:09:14 > 0:09:19what about Sir Bill Gammell's proposed pay package, you cannot

0:09:19 > 0:09:22say he has failed. Three family homes worth nearly 1

0:09:22 > 0:09:27million are to be seized and sold after a judge ruled their owners

0:09:27 > 0:09:29were involved in drugs, extortion and money-laundering. Russell

0:09:29 > 0:09:35Stirton and Alexander Anderson appeared in court but were never

0:09:35 > 0:09:41convicted of those crimes. Police pursued the two using the proceeds

0:09:41 > 0:09:46of crime legislation. Russell Stirton and Alexander

0:09:46 > 0:09:50Anderson were arrested eight years ago by Strathclyde Police as part

0:09:50 > 0:09:53of an operation into money- laundering and extortion. Police

0:09:53 > 0:09:56raided a garage in the Glasgow Springburn district which was

0:09:56 > 0:10:02operated by the men. They were arrested and appeared in court but

0:10:02 > 0:10:08the case never went to trial. Russell Stirton's what Cherie house

0:10:08 > 0:10:16in all guide was also raided. Prosecutors tried to seize it and

0:10:16 > 0:10:19homes owned by their mothers. Russell Stirton and Alexander

0:10:19 > 0:10:24Anderson argued they had bought their houses with cash from their

0:10:24 > 0:10:29businesses, including this garage which has since changed hands. They

0:10:29 > 0:10:36just said that their businesses involved unlawful conduct,

0:10:36 > 0:10:39including the supply of drugs and an extortion racket. The men

0:10:39 > 0:10:48claimed in court their businesses were legitimate but the judge did

0:10:48 > 0:10:52not believe them. They said -- they said they had been importing drugs

0:10:52 > 0:10:57and had fraudulently apply for mortgages on their properties.

0:10:57 > 0:11:03Another business owned by Anderson is also to be seized. The men have

0:11:03 > 0:11:07three least to appeal against the order which is worth 922,000.

0:11:07 > 0:11:12A man has appeared in court following the death of James McCann

0:11:12 > 0:11:16from Lesley in Fife who was hit by a car at the weekend. 25-year-old

0:11:16 > 0:11:20Alastair Dick has been charged with culpable homicide and attempting to

0:11:20 > 0:11:25pervert the course of justice. He made no plea and was remanded in

0:11:25 > 0:11:29custody. Acid rain devastates - populations

0:11:29 > 0:11:36but the long-term analysis of its impact on Scotland has revealed

0:11:36 > 0:11:42only gradual improvement. The study found a loch to be recovering but

0:11:42 > 0:11:47still chronically acidified. It may look clean and pure but the

0:11:47 > 0:11:50pollution here is invisible. It should be ideal spawning territory

0:11:50 > 0:11:56for salmon and trout but the water is too acidic for eggs to develop

0:11:56 > 0:12:01properly. These eggs from a hatchery are being introduced to

0:12:01 > 0:12:07see if it has improved. Thousands of eggs are dying and if that were

0:12:07 > 0:12:14fish, it would not be accepted, but are the cars underneath the gravel

0:12:14 > 0:12:23and nobody sees it. 200 kilometres of river is acidified. If it was

0:12:23 > 0:12:28visual, people would find it completely unacceptable. This is

0:12:28 > 0:12:33one of the UK's most important monitoring sites. This path, 1000

0:12:33 > 0:12:36ft up in the Galloway hills, is well worn by acid rain researchers.

0:12:36 > 0:12:42It has been the most comprehensively monitored site in

0:12:42 > 0:12:46the country for 20 years but the improvement is slow. So far ride in

0:12:46 > 0:12:49front air pollution has been arriving in making the water acidic.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54The soil behind this has become saturated and that is slowly

0:12:54 > 0:12:57reaching out and the effects are still manifesting. Pollution caused

0:12:57 > 0:13:03by industrial sulphur emissions is improving but only gradually and

0:13:03 > 0:13:06that is good news. This loch remains chronically acidified.

0:13:06 > 0:13:12Nitrate levels actually increasing and scientists are also concerned

0:13:12 > 0:13:17about the impact of climate change, particularly, increased rainfall.

0:13:17 > 0:13:20These waters still have an important tale to tell. The next

0:13:20 > 0:13:27chapter coincides with the expected designation of Galloway this summer

0:13:27 > 0:13:32as a Unesco biosphere reserve. is important we managed to reverse

0:13:32 > 0:13:36the mistakes made in the past. The more we understand, the more we can

0:13:36 > 0:13:40improve the situation and improve the water quality and fish stocks

0:13:40 > 0:13:47and the way fishermen can use it and tourists can come to the area.

0:13:47 > 0:13:57These are all things that we will work with agencies to improve.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59

0:13:59 > 0:14:04current evidence, improvement is But what beautiful scenery. Let's

0:14:04 > 0:14:08look at what else has been happening across Scotland.

0:14:08 > 0:14:15NHS highland it says it may have to postpone some operations at

0:14:15 > 0:14:20Raigmore Hospital because of her short bridge -- a shortage of beds

0:14:20 > 0:14:24caused by an outbreak of C-diff. Murderer Malcolm Webster has been

0:14:24 > 0:14:29given leave to appeal the length of his sentence. He was jailed for a

0:14:29 > 0:14:33minimum of 30 years for the murder of his first wife in Aberdeenshire

0:14:33 > 0:14:40and the second murder -- the attempted murder of a second.

0:14:40 > 0:14:47His appeal to overturn his conviction has already been denied.

0:14:47 > 0:14:55Orkney and Shetland should have the right to remain part of the UK if

0:14:55 > 0:14:57the Scot went debts independence. More than 40 companies in the

0:14:57 > 0:15:02Western Isles have called on the Scottish Government to reverse a

0:15:02 > 0:15:08decision to cut very subsidies for haulage firms, which they say will

0:15:08 > 0:15:13increase their costs. The there is to be changes, there has to be a

0:15:13 > 0:15:17discount scheme that applies to large and small companies. I am

0:15:17 > 0:15:23pleased that the Transport Minister has now agreed to meet with the

0:15:23 > 0:15:26delegation. Policing of the new Cairnryan I

0:15:26 > 0:15:30received a report could be strengthened. Police want the

0:15:30 > 0:15:33Government to pay for four additional officers to make up for

0:15:34 > 0:15:39those last year it -- last year after a funding cut.

0:15:39 > 0:15:45St Andrews has been named as the most creative pace in Scotland, by

0:15:45 > 0:15:49the arts body created Scotland, and awarded 150,000 to fund cultural

0:15:49 > 0:15:55work. And a new tartan has been created

0:15:55 > 0:16:03to commemorate the arrival of the pandas at Edinburgh zoo.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07More on those and other stories on the BBC Scotland website.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11It is nearly as common as depression but getting the right

0:16:11 > 0:16:16help for eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia can be

0:16:16 > 0:16:23extremely difficult. Now a new specialist unit has opened at St

0:16:23 > 0:16:26John's Hospital in Livingston to help the most acute cases.

0:16:26 > 0:16:31This was when I first joined the RAF in September. I was still quite

0:16:31 > 0:16:37underweight. Nicole Blackie had just been accepted into the RAF.

0:16:37 > 0:16:43Hersh future should have been brighter. Instead, something dark

0:16:43 > 0:16:48was going on in her mind. All I'm would see was this huge figure in

0:16:48 > 0:16:52the mirror, although my family had told me I was really thin. Nicole

0:16:52 > 0:16:57was in the grip of anorexia. She was hiding food, deceiving her

0:16:57 > 0:17:06family. She is 5 ft 7 but her weight plummeted to five stone. She

0:17:06 > 0:17:11was admitted to hospital to weak to work. -- a walk. I wanted to get

0:17:11 > 0:17:14better but the boys in my head, the owners, was wanting to kill me.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18Around 1000 people are diagnosed with eating disorders Eadie in

0:17:18 > 0:17:24Scotland. This new unit at St John's Hospital will be used to

0:17:24 > 0:17:27treat some of the most accused -- acute cases. It is the second most

0:17:27 > 0:17:31common psychiatric disorder for young women and it is the most

0:17:31 > 0:17:35dangerous. The death rate is higher for this disorder than any other

0:17:35 > 0:17:40psychiatric disorder. So treatment for severe cases is really

0:17:40 > 0:17:45important. The unit brings together a specialist unit -- nurses,

0:17:45 > 0:17:51doctors and support workers, that aim to get more people on the road

0:17:51 > 0:17:57to recovery. Nicole's family are simply Greipel she is still here.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01We never thought we would see her back, ever, the state she was in.

0:18:01 > 0:18:11We thought that would be her, however long she was going to live,

0:18:11 > 0:18:12

0:18:12 > 0:18:15but she has Pool 3 and his amazing. This year marks the anniversary --

0:18:15 > 0:18:19100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie. As part of the centenary

0:18:19 > 0:18:29celebrations his granddaughter, Sarah Lee Guthrie, is in Scotland.

0:18:29 > 0:18:34This morning she gave an impromptu tribute in a Glasgow are.

0:18:34 > 0:18:38-- in a Glasgow pub. He was one of the most important

0:18:38 > 0:18:43songwriters of the 20th century and Glasgow will stage the first

0:18:43 > 0:18:48celebration of this, the 100th anniversary, of his birth. But

0:18:48 > 0:18:52Woody Guthrie already has a connection to Glasgow. In the 1940s

0:18:52 > 0:19:00he was Severn Bridge the US merchant navy and his ship was

0:19:00 > 0:19:03torpedoed. He had leave in Glasgow Bahia. He spent his time meeting

0:19:03 > 0:19:06other songwriters and gathering material in pubs like this one.

0:19:06 > 0:19:13think he would definitely have ended up in here because at the

0:19:13 > 0:19:19Tara it was mainly French music that was played in here. It was a

0:19:19 > 0:19:23real hub for folk music. -- at that time it was mainly folk music that

0:19:23 > 0:19:28was played in here. Today it is his granddaughter who is making her way

0:19:28 > 0:19:32there, ahead of performing in a special tribute concert. She says

0:19:32 > 0:19:37she's proud her grandfather's songs have travelled the world and still

0:19:37 > 0:19:46stand the test of time. What he represents, as far as his legacy

0:19:46 > 0:19:50goes, is growing, and it is just this mass of idea of hope and

0:19:50 > 0:19:57justice and all the things that he stood for, the little guy s the Big

0:19:57 > 0:20:02Boris, and I think we need that more than ever. Now he is turning

0:20:02 > 0:20:10100, we can celebrate. celebrate a will, in the pubs and

0:20:10 > 0:20:17clubs as well as the concert hall. 100 years after his birth, Woody

0:20:17 > 0:20:21Guthrie's songs are live on. Let's get the latest sport.

0:20:21 > 0:20:26Scotland's rugby team has a new captain. It is the Edinburgh

0:20:26 > 0:20:30forward Ross Award. -- Ross Ford. He will skipper this calls for the

0:20:30 > 0:20:35Six Nations. The national side's head coach says he has given the

0:20:35 > 0:20:40job to fall because his first was, Kelly Brown, is injured.

0:20:40 > 0:20:49Many a golfer has graced the famous bridge on the Old Course, but today

0:20:49 > 0:20:55it was the turn of this man, the new Scotland rugby captain. Ross

0:20:55 > 0:21:01Ford has it... For all of us, it is about developing leaders, and Ross

0:21:01 > 0:21:04is an outstanding character, and an outstanding player. His next step

0:21:04 > 0:21:08for him is becoming captain and becoming a leader and leading from

0:21:08 > 0:21:13the front. I am really looking forward to him doing that. He will

0:21:13 > 0:21:21do it in his way, as Ross Ford. He has been captain of Edinburgh a

0:21:21 > 0:21:24couple of times. Ford is the latest man to lead Scotland Under Ross --

0:21:24 > 0:21:30under the current manager. Kelly Brown was supposed to be next in

0:21:31 > 0:21:40line. He will not play any part in this year's Six Nations, as he is

0:21:40 > 0:21:43having an operation on a leg injury. Ford has already been in the thick

0:21:43 > 0:21:47of it against England, and next Saturday he will captain Scotland

0:21:47 > 0:21:52against them at Murrayfield, as the Six Nations gets under way. It is a

0:21:52 > 0:21:57massive game for us but I will do as a bridge it like I do any other

0:21:57 > 0:22:02game. I just have a few decisions to make on a pitch at times but it

0:22:02 > 0:22:06is just a massive honour to be asked to captain your country.

0:22:06 > 0:22:10Robinson says he is excited about seeing his new captain in action

0:22:10 > 0:22:13and adds it is time Scotland delivered in the Six Nations.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17I Andy Murray plays for a place in the semifinals of the Australian

0:22:17 > 0:22:21Open in the wee small hours of the morning. To make it through to the

0:22:21 > 0:22:25last four he will have to beat one of the rising stars of the sport,

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Kei Nishikori, and the young Japanese has already pulled off the

0:22:28 > 0:22:33biggest upset of this year's tournament.

0:22:33 > 0:22:39Kei Nishikori is becoming a first Japanese person to reach the

0:22:39 > 0:22:48quarterfinals in Australia for 76 years. He beat the No. 6 seed Jo-

0:22:48 > 0:22:52Wilfried Tsonga in five sets. To find out more, the Japanese 25th

0:22:52 > 0:22:58seed is 22 years old and one of the smallest players in top-class

0:22:58 > 0:23:03tennis, at five foot ten inches. But his -- he is on the rise. At

0:23:03 > 0:23:09the start of last year he was ranked 98th, now he is 26th in the

0:23:09 > 0:23:14world. Here is very good. For someone who is not the tallest guy,

0:23:14 > 0:23:19but he creates a lot of power from the back of the court. He deals

0:23:19 > 0:23:23with players well. His rides well. He is tough. He has won a few long

0:23:23 > 0:23:29matches here as well so he is doing well. The pair have only played

0:23:29 > 0:23:36once before. Murray won on that occasion. We played at the end of

0:23:36 > 0:23:41last year and he kind of destroyed me, so... But I have no pressure

0:23:41 > 0:23:45now. If Murray can destroy him again, or even get him out in five

0:23:45 > 0:23:48sets, the Scot would be the underdog in the next round and he

0:23:48 > 0:23:56could face world No. 1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic

0:23:56 > 0:24:01for a place in the final. Scottish FC's compliance officer

0:24:01 > 0:24:09has been a busy man today. He is offering a two-match ban for the

0:24:09 > 0:24:13Hibs striker. It is his first such charges as many months. Motherwell

0:24:13 > 0:24:17will appeal after Michael Higdon was offered a one-match ban for

0:24:17 > 0:24:22this Geoff jet after his goal against Dundee United at the

0:24:22 > 0:24:29weekend. -- this gesture. The FA's performance director says

0:24:29 > 0:24:32he wants -- Scotland's young talent to develop here rather than being

0:24:32 > 0:24:37dented by the English Premier League. He was asked about James

0:24:37 > 0:24:41Forrest and links -- reports linking him to Tottenham Hotspur.

0:24:41 > 0:24:46For the time being it will be excellent for James if he can stay

0:24:46 > 0:24:49playing with Celtic, try to do as good as possible and get

0:24:49 > 0:24:53international appearances be the national teams. Maybe also with

0:24:53 > 0:24:56Celtic next year. The worst thing that can happen to him is that he

0:24:57 > 0:25:03signs for a Premier League club in England and ends up not playing.

0:25:03 > 0:25:09There is live coverage of tonight's SPL match against Motherwell and

0:25:09 > 0:25:14Dunfermline on the Sportsound. It is on air now. -- the show is on

0:25:14 > 0:25:24air now. The coverage starts at some 40 5:00pm.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26

0:25:27 > 0:25:31As we head towards 7pm, here is the One a those disappointing drizzly

0:25:31 > 0:25:37damp days. If you are hoping to see the Northern Lights tonight, you

0:25:37 > 0:25:39would be very lucky indeed. Most of the heavy moderate break across

0:25:39 > 0:25:43parts of Argyll and the north-west Highlands but for much of the

0:25:43 > 0:25:50mainland it will be cloudy and damp. Wind is increasing at the West

0:25:50 > 0:25:55Coast. A mild night. Suddenly in the West. Further is, perhaps, a

0:25:55 > 0:26:00little milder than not. -- For the East. Into tomorrow, a windy day.

0:26:00 > 0:26:05Severe gale force across parts of Shetland in the morning. Elsewhere,

0:26:05 > 0:26:09strong and everyone of today. Lots -- like outbreaks of rain and

0:26:09 > 0:26:13drizzle. Towards the afternoon, the difference is that it will be

0:26:13 > 0:26:17pretty mild. Temperatures up to nine or ten degrees or so, though

0:26:17 > 0:26:23there will be a lot of cloud around and some light rain and drizzle. So

0:26:23 > 0:26:26even with those higher temperatures, not feeling that special. A glimmer

0:26:26 > 0:26:31of brightness along the Moray coast and into Inverness but the rain

0:26:31 > 0:26:36never far away. A mix back for Orkney and Shetland. Perhaps not as

0:26:37 > 0:26:41much sunshine as we saw today for grip. Him to the evening, a cold

0:26:41 > 0:26:45front from West to East. This time tomorrow it will be pretty wet.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49Especially across the central belt. Looking at the pressure chart, we

0:26:49 > 0:26:59can see the cold front continuing to shovel away from us towards the

0:26:59 > 0:27:03North Sea. Behind it, a band of, weather. For Thursday, bright with

0:27:03 > 0:27:07showers. The showers will be wintery. We could see his little

0:27:07 > 0:27:11hail. Temperatures back to where they should be. In between the

0:27:11 > 0:27:16showers, some brightness. Friday looks the best day of the week,

0:27:17 > 0:27:24with plenty of sunshine, dry bright conditions. Wind easing down.

0:27:24 > 0:27:28Tonight and tomorrow, damp and Tonight's main stories: First

0:27:28 > 0:27:31Minister Alex Salmond is in London this evening making a speech

0:27:31 > 0:27:36describing how England would benefit if Scotland became

0:27:36 > 0:27:41independent. He is making the claim ahead of the launch tomorrow of his

0:27:42 > 0:27:48independence referendum plans. And one of the UK's eight Dail
