:00:21. > :00:25.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on the programme....
:00:25. > :00:27.A jury takes less than two hours to find that Craig Roy did murder his
:00:27. > :00:34.schoolmate, Jack Frew. Jack's family are demanding the maximum
:00:34. > :00:39.sentence. The verdict could not have been anything apart from her
:00:40. > :00:47.door, because the roads what it was. We hear the emergency call that
:00:47. > :00:53.alerted police to the events that that evening in May 2010. Some one
:00:53. > :00:55.has murdered him. In other news this evening...
:00:55. > :00:57.Demands grow for a Scottish public inquiry into the breast implants
:00:57. > :00:59.scandal. Nikica Jelavic says he would have
:00:59. > :01:06.stayed with Rangers, if he had been asked.
:01:06. > :01:09.And just why the Forth Bridge was given a coveted Blue Peter Badge.
:01:09. > :01:15.The family of East Kilbride schoolboy Jack Frew have called for
:01:15. > :01:18.his murderer Craig Roy to be given the maximum possible sentence. 19-
:01:18. > :01:25.year-old Roy was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow today and now
:01:25. > :01:28.faces a life term for stabbing Jack 20 times and slitting his throat.
:01:28. > :01:31.In a statement, Jack Frew's family described him as a happy, loving
:01:31. > :01:41.and vibrant boy, whose life had been snatched and whose good name
:01:41. > :01:48.
:01:48. > :01:55.had been tarnished by Roy. The trial was no worse. The family of
:01:56. > :02:00.Jack Frew left court, having seen the killer convicted of murder.
:02:00. > :02:08.verdict could not have been anything apart from murder. That's
:02:08. > :02:16.what it was. His good name was also tarnished by Craig Roy. These lies
:02:16. > :02:23.where unfounded. The family can only take comfort in the fact that
:02:23. > :02:33.people who knew Jack really knew what he was like. I at the centre
:02:33. > :02:36.
:02:36. > :02:41.of this was Jack Frew, an exuberant 16-year-old. He had a brief sexual
:02:41. > :02:51.encounter with one teenager, who then went on to have a relationship
:02:51. > :02:52.
:02:52. > :03:00.with Jack Frew. Repeatedly, to police and in court, Craig Roy said
:03:00. > :03:06.that Jack Frew was blackmailing him, threatening to tell of their
:03:06. > :03:16.relationship. In May 2010, he agreed to meet him outside this
:03:16. > :03:22.
:03:22. > :03:28.church. But he went armed with a knife. This was the cupboard that
:03:28. > :03:34.the taking the knife from here and then hiding it again, showed that
:03:34. > :03:44.the attack had been planned. He wanted to be stopped pester, but he
:03:44. > :03:45.
:03:45. > :03:49.said he did like the attention he received from Jack Frew. They went
:03:49. > :03:55.into the woods, where he claims that Jack Frew exposed himself. We
:03:55. > :04:02.do not know what else happened, but he was found with 20 stab wounds
:04:02. > :04:07.and with his throat slit open. Craig Roy says he cannot remember
:04:07. > :04:13.what happened. The prosecutor called this lack of memory a
:04:13. > :04:19.convenience. Unbelievably, Craig Roy said he was trying to help Jack
:04:19. > :04:25.Frew. But he did not phone the police, but thinking of himself, he
:04:25. > :04:34.phoned his boyfriend. When Chris Hannah arrived on the scene he saw
:04:34. > :04:41.the body and called the emergency services. Someone has murdered and.
:04:41. > :04:51.What do you mean that someone has murdered and? What has happened?
:04:51. > :04:52.
:04:52. > :05:02.has had his throat cut. Outside, he barged into a television reporter
:05:02. > :05:02.
:05:02. > :05:12.and then hit out at a photographer. Any police interview, this was
:05:12. > :05:40.
:05:40. > :05:48.Fresh flowers this week, near to where he died. This is my first
:05:48. > :05:50.blog on mutual. The family said he loved life and of fun into every
:05:50. > :05:52.situation. 60 Scottish women who received sub-
:05:53. > :05:56.standard breast implants are calling on the Scottish government
:05:56. > :05:58.to hold an inquiry. The Westminster government has already announced a
:05:58. > :06:03.review of the circumstances surrounding PIP implants, but the
:06:03. > :06:13.women say Scotland should lead the way with a full public inquiry.
:06:13. > :06:15.
:06:15. > :06:22.This report contains some flash photography. Five women who have
:06:22. > :06:28.found out there at the centre of the medical scandal. Patricia heard
:06:28. > :06:36.about the problem with her in plants through it the radial and
:06:36. > :06:42.Janie went for a scan yesterday. I am going to have my end plants
:06:42. > :06:48.removed next Wednesday. Nobody knows what this is doing to our
:06:48. > :06:53.bodies. A lot of people are going for operations and do not have any
:06:53. > :07:03.symptoms, but after the operation, the seemed to have a lot of
:07:03. > :07:09.
:07:09. > :07:18.symptoms. People who are victims of the PIP scandal. Last week, there
:07:18. > :07:28.was a consultation with some of the victims. One of the company stopped
:07:28. > :07:35.
:07:35. > :07:45.using the end plans made by World It may have identified problems
:07:45. > :07:45.
:07:45. > :07:53.with the PIP in plants earlier on. By many of the issues are come
:07:53. > :08:03.nationwide, so why are the Scottish government been asked to foot the
:08:03. > :08:03.
:08:03. > :08:09.bill? It is in the remit of the Scottish government. These Scottish
:08:09. > :08:13.government says it is sympathetic to the cause, but is insisting on a
:08:13. > :08:15.United Kingdom review. The Health Minister has, however, agreed to
:08:15. > :08:20.meet them. You are watching Reporting Scotland
:08:20. > :08:23.from the BBC. Still to come on the programme...
:08:23. > :08:25.On the lash - an insight into how some women respond to the gloomy
:08:25. > :08:28.economic situation. And in sport, did Jelavic jump or
:08:28. > :08:30.was he pushed? The former Rangers striker contradicts the club owners
:08:30. > :08:35.account of the player's Ibrox departure.
:08:36. > :08:40.And meet Pat's People. Well, some of them. Are these the men to
:08:40. > :08:43.reverse Hibs fortunes? All that and more to come.
:08:43. > :08:47.Political leaders at Holyrood have been trading insults over who was
:08:47. > :08:50.to blame for the failure at the Royal Bank of Scotland. Labour said
:08:50. > :09:00.the First Minister Alex Salmond had himself become "the Fred Goodwin of
:09:00. > :09:02.
:09:02. > :09:09.Scottish politics", but Mr Salmond dismissed the attack. Once Fred
:09:09. > :09:19.Goodwin had honours heaped upon him, but now politicians take turns to
:09:19. > :09:22.
:09:22. > :09:30.heap insult so on. In 2007, he was asked for help in the takeover of
:09:30. > :09:38.the Dutch bank, which prove disastrous. I really do not think
:09:38. > :09:44.Fred Goodwin is the Labour Party's strongest approach. After all, it
:09:44. > :09:49.was then who nominated him for a knighthood. And he was also an
:09:49. > :09:56.economic adviser to the former Labour Prime Minister and
:09:56. > :10:01.Chancellor of the Exchequer. Unionists, it is the chance to
:10:01. > :10:09.claim the skull and cannot afford independence. She argued that the
:10:09. > :10:14.First Minister's judgment was forward. He is unable to make an
:10:14. > :10:23.economic case for independence and is the First Minister not in danger
:10:23. > :10:26.of becoming the Fred Goodwin of Scottish politics? Alex Salmond
:10:26. > :10:36.said Scotland would thrive under independence and said that the
:10:36. > :10:38.
:10:38. > :10:45.economy had struggled under a Labour nationally. Ed Balls was in
:10:45. > :10:48.Edinburgh, visiting a spicy food centre. He was taking an even-
:10:48. > :10:55.handed approach as to who was to blame over the Royal Bank of
:10:55. > :11:02.Scotland fiasco. Alex Salmond is playing politics backing Fred
:11:02. > :11:05.Goodwin. I think it is a pretty big error of judgment. In all, a spicy
:11:05. > :11:08.mix indeed. Appeal judges have rejected legal
:11:08. > :11:11.action brought by a tobacco firm which was challenging the Scottish
:11:11. > :11:14.government's plans to stop the open display of cigarettes in shops and
:11:14. > :11:17.ban the use of cigarette vending machines. The challenge was brought
:11:17. > :11:22.by Imperial Tobacco, who claimed the measures were beyond the
:11:22. > :11:25.legislative competence of the Holyrood Parliament. However,
:11:25. > :11:29.judges ruled that the measures are not outside the scope of the
:11:29. > :11:32.parliament's powers. A man will find out next month if
:11:32. > :11:35.he is to be jailed for posting a picture of Neil Lennon covered in
:11:35. > :11:38.bullet wounds on a social networking site. David Craig also
:11:38. > :11:41.posted abuse about the Celtic manager and Rangers slogans on his
:11:41. > :11:46.Facebook page, after the Old Firm's so-called "shame game" in March
:11:46. > :11:49.last year. At Glasgow Sheriff Court, he
:11:49. > :11:51.admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause
:11:51. > :11:56.fear and alarm. The 24-year-old was released on
:11:56. > :11:59.bail and sentence was deferred until March.
:11:59. > :12:08.A look now at what else has been happening across the country this
:12:08. > :12:13.Thursday... A man died and a woman was flown by air ambulance to
:12:13. > :12:18.Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after a crash between a car and a tractor
:12:18. > :12:25.near Keith this morning. The crew of the Peter Head fishing boat has
:12:25. > :12:33.been safely escorted to Shetland. The alarm was raised after the
:12:33. > :12:37.bought, with five people on board, began taking on water. Tayside Fire
:12:37. > :12:44.Brigade has been criticised for keeping their station staffed
:12:44. > :12:50.overnight. Highland councillors being gorged to employ a special
:12:50. > :12:59.pot holes hit squad. Critics say should bring in more staff to stop
:12:59. > :13:06.the rot. The decision on a energy from waste incinerator plant will
:13:06. > :13:16.be decided upon tomorrow. The decision for the Perth development
:13:16. > :13:23.was first rejected and 2009. In the Borders, low carbon economy will be
:13:23. > :13:29.discussed. The group from the Aberdeen University have discovered
:13:29. > :13:37.strange sea life underneath the waters of New Zealand. They seem to
:13:37. > :13:43.thrive where pressure is 1,000 times greater than at sea level.
:13:43. > :13:49.would find them in the deepest parts of the auction. However, on
:13:49. > :13:55.the last trip, from 7,000 metres, we found this, which is called Sid
:13:56. > :14:03.the super giant one. There is more on these and other stories on the
:14:03. > :14:06.People all over Scotland have been tightening their belts in the
:14:06. > :14:09.economic downturn. But one area that seems to be expanding is the
:14:09. > :14:13.beauty sector, with evidence that demand for treatments is on the
:14:13. > :14:17.increase. Laura Bicker has been investigating. From Cox and collars
:14:17. > :14:23.to caressing does cuticles. In these times of cutbacks, the beauty
:14:23. > :14:32.business is holding its own. People are spending money on getting their
:14:32. > :14:38.faces done. They are also getting massages, lots of waxing as well.
:14:38. > :14:41.To tell you the truth, the recession has not hit the beauty
:14:42. > :14:48.business in this area. In due are looking nice, it makes you feel
:14:48. > :14:52.better and that keeps you going. The British Retail Consortium have
:14:52. > :15:02.no official figures, but they say the health and beauty sector is
:15:02. > :15:04.
:15:04. > :15:11.doing brother well. They say people would spend money on big items, but
:15:11. > :15:17.they do like their small luxuries. This entrepreneur spotted a fad for
:15:17. > :15:23.false eyelashes. You attach at the outer edge. With some help, she
:15:23. > :15:28.started her own company. In January when you think it would be quiet,
:15:28. > :15:32.we saw a sharp rise in sales. People obviously wanted to cheer
:15:33. > :15:38.themselves up with new eyelashes. Others are seizing the opportunity
:15:38. > :15:48.to start a new business. Here at the Scottish beauty school there
:15:48. > :15:48.
:15:48. > :15:53.has been a number -- and increase in the number of students. It is
:15:54. > :15:57.achievable because you can come into this industry relatively
:15:57. > :16:05.cheaply in the sense that you can set up a business without spending
:16:05. > :16:15.a fortune. Women who feel pampered, feel good. BT may only be skin deep,
:16:15. > :16:15.
:16:15. > :16:20.but economically it seems as if it is giving us all of a boost.
:16:20. > :16:23.And now for the sport. Did Nikica Jelavic want to leave
:16:23. > :16:25.Rangers or was he forced out? The striker signed for the English
:16:25. > :16:28.Premier League club Everton on Monday. Rangers owner Craig Whyte
:16:29. > :16:32.says the Croatian's mind was made up to go, but the player's account
:16:32. > :16:40.contradicts that story. Here's our senior football reporter Chris
:16:40. > :16:49.McLaughlin. Nikica Jelavic getting used to his
:16:49. > :16:55.new surroundings and team-mate. His move from Rangers has lessened
:16:55. > :17:01.attacking options, but it seems he could have stayed in Glasgow.
:17:01. > :17:09.not force my transferred. I spoke to my manager and said if they want
:17:09. > :17:13.me to leave, I will. If they want me to stay idle. That seems to be
:17:13. > :17:23.at odds with what this man was saying on Tuesday, responding to
:17:23. > :17:25.
:17:25. > :17:31.criticism. So who is right and he is wrong? This afternoon I posed
:17:31. > :17:41.that question to the medium of Twitter. As ever, some interesting
:17:41. > :17:46.
:17:46. > :17:56.responses. Peter says, I would not believe either of them. Another
:17:56. > :18:01.tweak said he might have thought it was best to sell. One man who has
:18:01. > :18:06.not had his say so far is the manager. Ally McCoist will address
:18:06. > :18:10.the media tomorrow. In the last few minutes Rangers have denied
:18:10. > :18:13.Jelavic's claimed that he was forced out of the club.
:18:13. > :18:19.No-one could accuse Hibs of being idle during the transfer window.
:18:19. > :18:21.Their manager Pat Fenlon made more changes than any other SPL boss.
:18:21. > :18:24.Yes, Fenlon's Easter Road revolution would appear to be
:18:24. > :18:27.underway. His new look team's first challenge is against Kilmarnock in
:18:27. > :18:31.the Scottish Cup on Saturday, but the priority is to get the club out
:18:31. > :18:39.of the Premier League relegation zone. A new squad at Hibs. There
:18:39. > :18:44.will be no hiding place for these players. In all, they have been
:18:44. > :18:51.eight new players that have joined since the start of the transfers
:18:51. > :18:58.window. So how confident is Pat fenland that he has a squat to lift
:18:58. > :19:04.him away from the bottom of the table? We had been all over the
:19:04. > :19:09.place looking for players. We had brought in at some quality and a
:19:09. > :19:14.lot of experience. One of the new recruits has suffered relegation at
:19:14. > :19:21.two of his previous clubs. He says he is keen to make sure the Easter
:19:21. > :19:26.Road fans are rewarded. We need results desperately. The players
:19:26. > :19:32.that have come in are eager to play and are willing to work hard and
:19:32. > :19:42.climb up the table. It is the Scottish Cup Hibs will be
:19:42. > :19:42.
:19:42. > :19:52.concentrating on one Saturday, but their winning record is dismal.
:19:52. > :19:53.
:19:53. > :19:59.need to win some football matches and get ourselves ticking over.
:20:00. > :20:02.eight new team and may be the 110 year wait for glory is about to end.
:20:03. > :20:06.The Motherwell striker Henrik Oyama has agreed a new contract with the
:20:06. > :20:10.club. He was due to leave at the end of this season when his short
:20:10. > :20:13.term deal was up. But the Estonian has accepted a two year extension.
:20:13. > :20:16.He's scored four goals so far for the club in just five games.
:20:16. > :20:19.Scotland's rugby players now know the exact make up of the England
:20:19. > :20:21.team they will face in the Six Nations opener on Saturday.
:20:21. > :20:24.England's interim coach Stuart Lancaster has named three uncapped
:20:24. > :20:28.players in a relatively inexperienced starting 15. Full
:20:28. > :20:32.details are on our website. In fact, seven of his starting 15 have fewer
:20:32. > :20:39.than ten caps, but the man in charge doesn't think it will be a
:20:39. > :20:43.problem. The players we have selected have experience of playing
:20:43. > :20:48.in big club and European games. It will be interesting to see how that
:20:48. > :20:54.translates, but equally, eight of our starting side were at the World
:20:54. > :20:57.Cup as well. Paul Lawrie's fine start to this
:20:57. > :21:00.year's European tour golf is continuing. He's two shots off the
:21:00. > :21:03.lead after the opening day of the Qatar Masters. The 1999 Open
:21:03. > :21:07.champion shot a three under par first round of 69, three behind the
:21:07. > :21:11.leader Gonzalo Fernandez Castanyo of Spain. Were it not for a
:21:11. > :21:21.succession of missed putts toward the end of his 18 holes, his score
:21:21. > :21:22.
:21:22. > :21:26.could have been even better. And that is the sport.
:21:26. > :21:36.Tell me, did you get a Blue Peter badge?
:21:36. > :21:38.
:21:38. > :21:41.I didn't. I used to watch Matt Prior on the other side. -- Magpie.
:21:41. > :21:44.The Queen's got one, JK Rowling's got one and now one of Scotland's
:21:44. > :21:47.best-known feats of engineering is the proud owner of one. Normally a
:21:47. > :21:50.Blue Peter gold badge is awarded to people for exceptional achievement
:21:50. > :21:56.or acts of bravery, but now it's gone to the Forth Bridge. Lisa
:21:56. > :22:02.Summers has been finding out why. A world famous landmark. Eight
:22:02. > :22:07.remarkable feat of engineering. A very useful means of transportation.
:22:07. > :22:12.The Forth Bridge is famous for many things, but now another coveted
:22:12. > :22:18.accolade. It gives me great pleasure to present the Gold Blue
:22:19. > :22:26.Peter badge to the Forth Bridge. Yes, the Forth Bridge has been
:22:26. > :22:36.awarded a gold Blue Peter badge. It joins other famous Scots, such as
:22:36. > :22:38.
:22:38. > :22:45.Ewan McGregor. It was a great thing to happen. We know of Blue Peter,
:22:45. > :22:48.they have been on the bridge before. Blue Peter said the award was
:22:48. > :22:53.recognition for the thousands of workers who built the bridge and
:22:53. > :22:57.those who have maintained it. So what will it mean for this 121
:22:57. > :23:01.year-old bridge? It will get free entry to a range of visitor
:23:01. > :23:05.attractions and it will be the envy of many a school child. Quite
:23:05. > :23:10.jealous because I'm really want one and I have wanted on for quite a
:23:10. > :23:16.while. The it looks really nice and most people know about it. I think
:23:16. > :23:22.it is different, but it still deserves it. So the Forth Bridge
:23:22. > :23:29.joins a list of less than 1,000 blue Peter Gore badge holders. Next
:23:29. > :23:38.on the list though it is heritage status. Those discussions are under
:23:38. > :23:42.way. -- Blue Peter Gold badge. Before we go to the weather, let me
:23:42. > :23:45.tell you that our money man Fergus Muirhead will be here a week on
:23:45. > :23:48.Wednesday and he will be answering questions on negative equity. So If
:23:48. > :23:52.you're worried that your home is worth less than your mortgage and
:23:52. > :23:58.that this will restrict your ability to move, do contact him. It
:23:58. > :24:05.has been very cold. Let us see what the weather is going to do next.
:24:05. > :24:11.England is going to get snow. Will Another cold and frosty night
:24:11. > :24:15.tonight. You will be used to that this week. A lot of cloud working
:24:15. > :24:25.into the south-west, keeping places like Strathclyde a little less
:24:25. > :24:26.
:24:26. > :24:35.colder than last night. Further north, temperatures around minus
:24:35. > :24:45.five. Tomorrow, there is a high- pressure we have had all week,
:24:45. > :24:57.
:24:57. > :25:03.bringing settled conditions. There will be dry and bright conditions
:25:03. > :25:13.again in the south-west. Hopefully for Orkney and Shetland there will
:25:13. > :25:15.
:25:15. > :25:23.be more sunshine then you saw today. Going into tomorrow evening, it is
:25:23. > :25:33.much of the same. However, there is a weather front coming in tomorrow
