:00:20. > :00:23.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news...

:00:23. > :00:26.New claims about the Rangers owner Craig Whyte. A BBC Scotland

:00:26. > :00:30.investigation has found he may have lied in court over his business

:00:30. > :00:32.history. We have a special report from

:00:32. > :00:42.Afghanistan, where Scots soldiers are preparing to hand over security

:00:42. > :00:43.

:00:43. > :00:50.to local forces. It is the local people stepping up to take charge,

:00:50. > :00:53.that is what they need to do. Later in the programme, 60 years

:00:53. > :01:03.after she visited Scotland for the first time as monarch, a 100,000

:01:03. > :01:04.

:01:05. > :01:10.whisky is launched to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. He is a

:01:10. > :01:15.chance! A try for England! And why did Scotland get it so

:01:15. > :01:18.wrong against an inexperienced England side? Rangers owner Craig

:01:18. > :01:21.Whyte may have lied to a court over his business history. The

:01:21. > :01:24.businessman gave evidence at Glasgow Sheriff Court in December

:01:25. > :01:27.last year over an alleged unpaid bill to a roofing company.

:01:27. > :01:29.But a BBC Scotland investigation has unearthed documents relating to

:01:29. > :01:34.his seven-year director disqualification which casts

:01:34. > :01:43.serious doubt on his testimony, given under oath. More evidence

:01:43. > :01:46.about Mr Whyte's alleged criminal past has also emerged. Mr Whyte

:01:46. > :01:49.described the claims as defamatory and said the BBC was pursuing a

:01:49. > :01:57.witch hunt against him and Rangers Football Club. Our investigations

:01:57. > :02:07.correspondent Mark Daly has this exclusive report. Dundee United

:02:07. > :02:11.

:02:11. > :02:18.have come to Glasgow and beating Rangers! Club creche out of the

:02:18. > :02:26.Scottish Cup in front of less than 18,000 fans. This was an arriving

:02:26. > :02:34.in court at the end of last year regarding an unpaid debt. Just

:02:34. > :02:39.weeks prior to that, the BBC had revealed that Craig Whyte had been

:02:39. > :02:44.subject to a seven-year director disqualification. Craig Whyte

:02:44. > :02:52.refused to discuss the reasons behind it, dismissing it as the

:02:52. > :02:58.technicality. Craig Whyte says he could not remember what the ban was

:02:58. > :03:08.for, but we sure it was nothing to do with his treatment of creditors.

:03:08. > :03:19.

:03:19. > :03:23.Nothing to do with creditors? That does not appear to be true. We have

:03:23. > :03:29.abstained at a transcript from the judgment of his disqualification

:03:29. > :03:34.hearing, he erred in London. It concerns one of his past companies.

:03:34. > :03:39.The judge was scathing about Craig Whyte apparent attempts to shift

:03:39. > :03:49.the assets away from the failing company in order to leave his

:03:49. > :03:54.

:03:54. > :04:00.creditors behind. The register Their jobs were deliberately

:04:00. > :04:10.failing to be truthful under oath is perjury. In response, a

:04:10. > :04:22.

:04:22. > :04:27.These are dark times for the club. With a reported 10 million funding

:04:27. > :04:33.shortfall, a 49 million tax tribunal outstanding, the Ibrox

:04:33. > :04:38.club does not have its problems to seek. But it is Craig Whyte's

:04:38. > :04:43.business history which is once again under the spotlight. After

:04:43. > :04:49.the BBC documentary in October revealed allegations that he had

:04:49. > :04:54.committed a kept criminal offence while disqualified, Craig Whyte

:04:54. > :05:00.said he would launch legal action and withdrew co-operation from the

:05:00. > :05:05.broadcaster. The BBC has yet to receive a writ from his lawyers. We

:05:05. > :05:11.have now obtain more details about this matter. These detailed these

:05:11. > :05:16.documents, detailed after his disqualification, say that he not

:05:16. > :05:22.only controlled 85 % of the company's shares, but that he was

:05:22. > :05:28.also been consulted in relation to get another Shia or four, which she

:05:28. > :05:31.had offered to underwrite to the tune of 500,000. The maximum

:05:31. > :05:41.sentence for controlling the company will disqualified his two

:05:41. > :05:57.

:05:57. > :06:03.years in prison. The spokesman Craig Whyte pointed out that he has

:06:03. > :06:06.never been subject to a criminal investigation. He remains under

:06:06. > :06:11.investigation by the Scottish Football Association over its fit

:06:11. > :06:16.and proper person guidelines and by the Stock Exchange over failure to

:06:16. > :06:20.produce audited accounts. And you can see Mark Daly's full

:06:20. > :06:23.investigation tonight on Newsnight Scotland on BBC Two from 11.00pm.

:06:23. > :06:26.Scottish soldiers are at the forefront of the handover of power

:06:26. > :06:30.in Afghanistan as the timetable for pulling out British troops is

:06:30. > :06:33.accelerating. They have begun closing checkpoints and

:06:33. > :06:36.transferring control to Afghanistan security forces. British forces are

:06:36. > :06:41.due to withdraw by 2014, but many of the 10,000 soldiers deployed

:06:41. > :06:51.there may be brought home in little more than a year. Cameron Buttle

:06:51. > :06:52.

:06:52. > :06:58.has been embedded with 3 Scots, The Black Watch in Helmand. Helicopters

:06:58. > :07:08.still take the same flights and precautions that the ever did. But

:07:08. > :07:08.

:07:08. > :07:14.on the ground, things are different. Here in the South, the is beginning

:07:14. > :07:18.to look and feel as if it made when troops were not there. In this part

:07:18. > :07:25.of Helmand, this is becoming an increasingly rare sight it -

:07:25. > :07:33.British troops out on patrol. The number of incidents have decreased

:07:33. > :07:40.by 86 %. Now the main task is preparing the situation for the

:07:40. > :07:47.Afghans. This used to be a Black Watch position, but now they have

:07:47. > :07:53.pulled back. It is now looked after by Afghan national security forces.

:07:53. > :07:59.It is good in that it it is the Afghans who are stepping up to take

:07:59. > :08:07.charge. They are now the security for the people. If they're going to

:08:07. > :08:17.do that, they have to be able to do it themselves. I resemble a you're

:08:17. > :08:23.

:08:23. > :08:27.happy with that? The death and life. It is their home now. The soldiers

:08:27. > :08:33.visit there will checkpoints and talk to the locals. As the

:08:33. > :08:40.Afghanistan city, more security, the Black Watch have to do less.

:08:40. > :08:44.The number of patrols has been more than her aft. We are been working

:08:44. > :08:54.closely with them for a long time. We are now seen on a day-to-day

:08:54. > :09:00.basis their ability to patrol themselves. It will see them

:09:00. > :09:06.looking after their own people. It is the powerful combination. This

:09:06. > :09:15.has set the success will depend on people like this. His brother was

:09:15. > :09:22.killed by the Taliban. He says his men no longer feel the insurgents.

:09:22. > :09:27.But with this transition comes the moment of danger. As the Black

:09:27. > :09:34.Watch step back, the Afghan forces have to fill the gap. They know

:09:34. > :09:37.this is when the insurgents will try and destabilise the situation.

:09:37. > :09:41.You are watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the

:09:41. > :09:45.programme... A new exhibition pays tribute to

:09:45. > :09:48.the Scots who fought Franco during the Spanish Civil War.

:09:48. > :09:51.And in sport, Rangers' difficulties off the pitch are being reflected

:09:51. > :09:53.on it, as they crash out of the Scottish Cup. And what now for

:09:53. > :10:03.Scotland's Six Nations campaign, after a desperately disappointing

:10:03. > :10:06.opening encounter against the Auld A man has been found guilty for the

:10:06. > :10:11.second time of murdering his four- month-old daughter. Craig Jamieson

:10:11. > :10:14.was today convicted of killing baby Abbie at the family home in Glasgow.

:10:14. > :10:24.His original conviction was overturned due to the way the judge

:10:24. > :10:25.

:10:25. > :10:30.at the first trial gave legal directions to the jury. The baby,

:10:30. > :10:35.shortly after been born in September 2007. The father appears

:10:35. > :10:43.here as the doting father, but the jury today found him guilty of

:10:44. > :10:48.murdering his daughter. She suffered what was described as the

:10:48. > :10:58.catastrophic head injury. On the day the baby died, she was a warm

:10:58. > :10:59.

:10:59. > :11:04.with him. His wife had left the 0 with in describing how to look

:11:04. > :11:14.after the child. The prosecutor says only he would know what really

:11:14. > :11:20.

:11:20. > :11:24.He was sentenced to life with the minimum of 16 years. That was two

:11:24. > :11:29.years ago, but was overturned last year on the grounds that there had

:11:29. > :11:35.been this direction of the jury from the trial judge. The unanimous

:11:35. > :11:43.guilty verdict was returned today. Tonight, the calculator for school

:11:43. > :11:47.says the conviction for the brutal murder of his daughter shows the

:11:47. > :11:56.commitment of the Crown that people who are guilty of murder and

:11:56. > :12:00.serious offences Act hit against children will not escape justice.

:12:00. > :12:03.Today marks the 60th annivesary of the Queen's accession to the throne.

:12:03. > :12:13.In Scotland, it has been marked by a 21-gun salute at Edinburgh Castle

:12:13. > :12:14.

:12:15. > :12:22.and the launch of a very rare and expensive dram. Not the 1 o'clock

:12:22. > :12:27.gun, but the 21 guns. Fired from the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle.

:12:27. > :12:35.There were guns to end the pride Park in London. They are more where

:12:35. > :12:39.all marking the start of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. For the

:12:39. > :12:48.Queen, at the day mark the anniversary of her father, George

:12:48. > :12:55.the 6th. She was in Kenya when she heard the news. The Queen is now

:12:55. > :13:05.taking a well deserved holiday. I E a later, she was in Scotland as

:13:05. > :13:12.

:13:12. > :13:21.clean and heading for her beloved Today, at the local distillery,

:13:21. > :13:29.they were launching a very special whisky. It will go to charity as

:13:29. > :13:39.the 100,000 bottle. It is the very special whisky. A old whiskies can

:13:39. > :13:46.be very idiosyncratic, but this one is lovely. There is some frit, some

:13:46. > :13:56.gentle smokiness. At what hundred 1,000 a bottle, a wee nip like

:13:56. > :14:06.this works out at 4,000 a glass. Today, the Queen was in Norfolk.

:14:06. > :14:06.

:14:06. > :14:12.The main Jubilee celebrations will And we still don't know what Colin

:14:12. > :14:15.got even a little bit. An M S P is reporting Aberdeen bus

:14:15. > :14:20.company to the Office of Fair Trading, reporting huge fare rises

:14:20. > :14:24.and saying they have almost a monopoly. We have the highest fares

:14:24. > :14:27.in the country and they have a virtual monopoly. The travelling

:14:27. > :14:34.public here think enough is enough and I have referred it to the

:14:34. > :14:37.Office of Fair Trading. Scottish salmon company says its

:14:37. > :14:40.plans for new sites could create many new jobs.

:14:40. > :14:44.A prison officer and a drugs counsellor here at Inverness jail

:14:44. > :14:49.have been suspended after suspicious substances were found in

:14:49. > :14:53.their luggage as they return to Scotland from Amsterdam. It is

:14:53. > :14:58.understood they were detained in Edinburgh airport before Christmas.

:14:58. > :15:03.More job losses look certain at Borders College after cuts in

:15:03. > :15:09.teacher funding across Scotland. The last round of cuts saw 22

:15:09. > :15:14.redundancies. One of the largest Scots law firms

:15:14. > :15:19.is to merge with London based firm, Pinsent Masons. McGregor's name

:15:19. > :15:23.will disappear from Scottish loch after all for 100 years.

:15:23. > :15:30.A team of firefighters from Aberdeen are heading to Zimbabwe to

:15:30. > :15:36.help train them with new equipment. Another successful Celtic

:15:36. > :15:42.Connections festival ends tonight. Ticket sales topped the 1 million

:15:42. > :15:46.mark and last night a 22-year-old from more than one at BBC Radio

:15:46. > :15:51.Scotland's young traditional musician of the year. More than

:15:51. > :15:55.those stories from the BBC Scotland website.

:15:55. > :15:59.A funeral limousine has been issued with a parking ticket as it waited

:15:59. > :16:02.for people to leave a church service in their number. Funeral

:16:02. > :16:07.directors say it is the first time in their history they have never

:16:07. > :16:12.had a ticket. The local council have no cancelled it.

:16:12. > :16:17.You can imagine the scene. Inside the church, relatives and more

:16:17. > :16:20.mothers are paying their last respects. Outside, I three-car

:16:20. > :16:28.funeral court has. Just at the moment when the undertakers left

:16:28. > :16:32.the cars, the Blue meanies decided to stick. We usually have somebody

:16:32. > :16:36.waiting with their vehicles at all times until we have somebody going

:16:36. > :16:40.to the church to bring the coffin out. We had reached the stage when

:16:40. > :16:45.everybody was inside and ready to bring the coffin out, when one of

:16:45. > :16:50.my colleagues happened to poke his head out of the Church to notice at

:16:50. > :16:54.traffic warden placing a ticket on the last car, the second limousine.

:16:54. > :16:57.He looked as if he was moving up the line to the next limousine to

:16:57. > :17:01.do the same. It is the first time this funeral

:17:01. > :17:06.directors has ever had a ticket and they have been in business for 124

:17:06. > :17:09.years. Traffic restrictions in George Street have changed because

:17:09. > :17:13.of the tram works but the council have apologised and say they have

:17:13. > :17:19.cancelled the ticket. It goes to show what that even on your last

:17:19. > :17:23.journey, you cannot escape the wrath of a traffic warden.

:17:23. > :17:28.The sacrifices of 500 Scottish volunteers who fought Franco during

:17:28. > :17:32.the Spanish civil war are being marked -- matched by an exhibition.

:17:32. > :17:39.Short of weapons and training, the Scots who joined the International

:17:39. > :17:44.Brigade suffered heavy losses in their fight against fascism.

:17:44. > :17:48.They are all veterans. The photograph may be fading but the

:17:48. > :17:56.memories and the pride are still strong. This man's grandfather,

:17:56. > :17:59.Thomas, left Dundee in 1926. Thomas Curran was one of thousands of

:17:59. > :18:07.volunteers from across Europe and beyond who made their way to Spain

:18:07. > :18:11.to fight Franco and his troops. As they sought, a fight for freedom.

:18:11. > :18:18.You could turn up to war without any training. You have to admire

:18:18. > :18:24.their steel and the brass that is holding them together, to make them

:18:24. > :18:30.do it. Remember, it was their beliefs. This plaque commemorates

:18:30. > :18:35.the men from Dundee who died in Spain. 60 went from the city alone,

:18:35. > :18:41.17 would never return. From us cross Scotland, more than 500 men

:18:41. > :18:46.left behind family and friends to join the battle. The they were part

:18:46. > :18:49.of that 2500 and volunteer army from Britain and Ireland. This

:18:49. > :18:57.exhibition and in the Central Library tells its story, told for

:18:57. > :19:05.the first time in Scotland. After the first three days, there

:19:06. > :19:11.was only 150 left in a line of 600. In July 1937, there was only about

:19:11. > :19:14.40 who had survived and were still fighting out of about 400.

:19:14. > :19:18.International Brigade were ultimately defeated in Spain, with

:19:18. > :19:24.many soon finding themselves back in battle as the fight against

:19:24. > :19:30.fascism engulfed Europe for the next six years.

:19:30. > :19:34.Let's get to make's sports news. As you may have heard, the BBC has

:19:34. > :19:40.uncovered documents that show Rangers owner Craig White may have

:19:40. > :19:44.lied under oath. On the park, life after the sale of striker Nikica

:19:44. > :19:49.Jelavic does not look great and the Scottish Cup defeat was watched by

:19:49. > :19:52.the smallest crowd of the season at Ibrox.

:19:52. > :19:57.As the Rangers fans poured out of Ibrox, the downbeat at this fear

:19:57. > :20:06.could not simply be attributed to an early Scottish Cup exit. These

:20:06. > :20:11.supporters know a wider malaise is present. Tonight was ridiculous.

:20:11. > :20:18.The club is going down to mediocrity. It breaks my heart.

:20:18. > :20:22.Rubbish, disgraceful. It was embarrassing to watch the team.

:20:22. > :20:26.That is life. We will still win the league. Well-placed optimism are

:20:26. > :20:32.simply blind faith? Either way, the club more than ever needs the

:20:32. > :20:37.backing of the fans. Fewer than 18,000 turned up for the club tie -

:20:37. > :20:42.- Cup tie, and although there were mitigating factors, it is another

:20:42. > :20:45.sign all is not well. Craig Whyte says he is confident he will lead

:20:45. > :20:50.Rangers through this tough time but it means another reduction on

:20:50. > :20:53.player spending. That could then lead to fewer trophies and to

:20:53. > :20:58.complete their vicious circle, a less competitive Rangers will be

:20:58. > :21:08.less attractive to the fans. Billy Davies with a member of an

:21:08. > :21:09.

:21:09. > :21:14.early -- 1980s Rangers side for him silverware was scarce. What I do

:21:15. > :21:20.know is that finance is in football are very difficult. Difficult for

:21:20. > :21:24.many clubs. Hopefully over the next year or so we will see things

:21:24. > :21:28.settling down and clubs getting themselves in better positions.

:21:28. > :21:32.That may be the best case scenario for Rangers, who faced trying times

:21:32. > :21:35.both on and off the park. The draw for the quarter-finals of

:21:35. > :21:40.the William Hill Scottish Cup took place this afternoon and Dundee

:21:40. > :21:46.United will have to do it a hard way. Rangers conquerors were paired

:21:46. > :21:50.with Celtic in the last date. Hearts will play either Ross County

:21:50. > :21:59.or St Mirren. Mother all, who defeated Morton, will be home to

:21:59. > :22:04.Queen Of The South of Aberdeen. -- mother well. Those ties will be

:22:04. > :22:08.played on the weekend of 10 March with the fifth round replays been

:22:08. > :22:13.played next week. To rugby, and Andy Robinson has

:22:13. > :22:18.been too loyal to too many players for too long. Review of former

:22:18. > :22:22.Scotland international, John Beattie. This came after the

:22:22. > :22:25.opening match in the Six Nations campaign ended in crushing

:22:25. > :22:35.disappointment. This was the moment that sealed

:22:35. > :22:37.

:22:37. > :22:47.Scotland's fate. Than parks fails to Clear and England get a try. --

:22:47. > :22:49.

:22:49. > :22:54.Dan. Scotland came off second best again, why? I think he is the easy

:22:54. > :23:01.option to make into a scapegoat and that would be very unfair. We have

:23:01. > :23:08.to focus on a lack of prize at what happened in the other 39 minutes. -

:23:08. > :23:11.- tries. It is also about not making mistakes like this.

:23:11. > :23:16.pressure of their guys are under, they find it difficult to execute

:23:16. > :23:21.simple stuff. There is almost a monkey on their back about scoring

:23:21. > :23:25.tries, and that is becoming an issue. The opportunities are there

:23:26. > :23:31.but the team lack a finisher, someone who can score for Scotland.

:23:31. > :23:35.What needs to change? criticisms aimed at Robinson are

:23:35. > :23:39.normally from people who do not know. He is a great man and a great

:23:39. > :23:45.coach and was a great player. He is maybe just too loyal to some

:23:45. > :23:50.players who should not be forced up let's get behind Scotland, it says

:23:50. > :23:54.on the poster here at Murrayfield. On Saturday, thousands dead, but

:23:54. > :23:59.the left disappointed, watching Scotland squander the majority of

:23:59. > :24:03.the possession and great chances to score. Once again, Scotland lose in

:24:03. > :24:06.the Six Nations. Former Scotland rugby international

:24:06. > :24:13.Thom Evans are hopes to launch a new career in athletics later this

:24:13. > :24:17.month. The 26-year-old will compete in the 60 metres in Glasgow's

:24:17. > :24:21.Kelvin Hall. He had to retire from rugby two years ago after breaking

:24:22. > :24:31.his neck in the Six Nations match against Wales. Great to see him

:24:31. > :24:38.back doing something. For the weather forecast. Some

:24:38. > :24:42.cracking spells of sunshine across this country and the freezing fog

:24:42. > :24:50.has not really budged. Tonight, it will become more widespread

:24:50. > :24:54.particularly through the central belt. Quite a dramatic contrast in

:24:54. > :24:58.temperatures tonight, as low as- seven Celsius in parts of the East
