:00:17. > :00:22.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight, the man jailed for

:00:22. > :00:25.murdering an Asian waiter on Orkney appeals his conviction.

:00:25. > :00:32.Troubled times ahead for this Scottish bank, as its owners review

:00:32. > :00:36.operations. What will it mean for jobs and for call -- for customers?

:00:36. > :00:40.And it's a try for England! Dan Parks quits international rugby

:00:40. > :00:44.following Saturday's Calcutta Cup defeat.

:00:44. > :00:53.All and the sport of angling may be dominated by men, but we find out

:00:53. > :01:02.why it is the women who land the biggest fish. We are very patient.

:01:02. > :01:05.We will take a work time and we seemed to catch more fish away.

:01:05. > :01:08.A former soldier, described as "vicious and evil" by a judge for

:01:08. > :01:12.the murder of an Asian waiter, has begun an appeal against his

:01:12. > :01:22.conviction. Michael Ross was just 15 when he shot Shamsuddin Mahmood

:01:22. > :01:23.

:01:23. > :01:29.at point-blank range in an Orkney restaurant in 1994. It was a summer

:01:29. > :01:34.evening in 1994 in the Indian restaurant in Kirkwall was busy.

:01:34. > :01:41.Amass gunmen came in and shot Shamsuddin Mahmood at point blank

:01:41. > :01:46.range. This scene-of-crime video shows a bowl at all on the wall.

:01:46. > :01:53.This is the man convicted of the murder. Michael Ross was found

:01:53. > :01:58.guilty in 2008. At the time of the killing, he was just 15. He was

:01:58. > :02:05.sentenced to 25 years in jail, but at the end of the trial he tried to

:02:05. > :02:14.escape court. Today, he is that the Court of Appeal in Edinburgh

:02:14. > :02:18.challenging his conviction. It centres around come things out for

:02:18. > :02:22.work at the original trial. He says that certain evidence put forward

:02:22. > :02:31.by the police should not have been admitted and he was therefore

:02:31. > :02:37.denied a fair trial. He it was 14 years after the death of Shamsuddin

:02:37. > :02:44.Mahmood that he was convicted. Tutors at the original trial heard

:02:44. > :02:46.he was a race is to sort out one of the few Asian people on the island.

:02:46. > :02:52.The tax authorities have taken Hearts Football Club to court again,

:02:52. > :02:55.over an unpaid tax bill. The Edinburgh club has eight days to

:02:55. > :02:59.respond or face the threat of liquidation. Our business

:02:59. > :03:03.correspondent David Henderson is here with the latest.

:03:03. > :03:07.Yes, yet again, Hearts are slow in paying their taxes. And yet again

:03:07. > :03:09.they are being dragged through the courts. If they cannot get the cash

:03:09. > :03:12.together, the effect could be devastating.

:03:12. > :03:15.The tax authorities are threatening to liquidate the club. They say

:03:15. > :03:25.this is the last resort and unless bills are paid within ten days,

:03:25. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:34.they could break up Hearts and sell off the pieces. Business-as-usual

:03:34. > :03:39.question mark well, it is on the pitch, but off it, the players must

:03:39. > :03:49.wonder what the future might hold. Time and again, their wages have

:03:49. > :03:51.

:03:51. > :03:57.not been paid and time and now it a tax bill threatens the very future.

:03:57. > :04:04.The financial situation is as it is. It is then let that we do not know.

:04:04. > :04:12.If someone had come in and told us the situation it would be much

:04:12. > :04:22.clear. The club owner from Lithuania is a rich man, but he has

:04:22. > :04:22.

:04:22. > :04:27.had a habit of being hard to amount to pay his bills. He it is not a

:04:27. > :04:32.good sign that things were not going well financially. Hearts are

:04:32. > :04:38.not the only person feeling the pressure over tax. Tottenham

:04:38. > :04:45.manager Harry Redknapp is in court just now accused of taking bungs

:04:45. > :04:52.and avoiding tax. The Rangers' owner is also facing the same type

:04:52. > :04:58.of questions. In a all days, football clubs were very much left

:04:58. > :05:04.alone. But they are very much in the forefront now. They are now

:05:04. > :05:09.looking into the arrangements as regards tax trusts. There are also

:05:09. > :05:14.even looking down to the margins of we're cleaner's have been paying

:05:14. > :05:17.their tax properly. Hearts have told the BBC they have

:05:17. > :05:21.paid off part of this latest tax bill and plan to pay off the rest

:05:21. > :05:24.of it before the deadline tenders from now. -- ten days from now.

:05:24. > :05:28.They have done it before and are confident they can do it again.

:05:28. > :05:32.By all this is a high risk strategy and some will ask, if money is not

:05:32. > :05:35.a problem, why are they leaving it so late?

:05:35. > :05:38.You are watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the

:05:38. > :05:40.programme... Taking to the waves - how

:05:40. > :05:43.Scotland's lifeboats rescued more than 800 people in 2011.

:05:43. > :05:46.And in sport, just days after losing their opening Six Nations

:05:46. > :05:49.match to England, the man blamed by some for the defeat quits

:05:50. > :05:52.international rugby. We will also catch up with Andy

:05:52. > :06:02.Murray on a rare visit home to Scotland.

:06:02. > :06:04.

:06:04. > :06:07.And we are in Miami with an Olympic medal hopeful. All that coming up.

:06:07. > :06:12.The Australian owners of the Clydesdale Bank are launching a

:06:12. > :06:15.radical review of the business. There are fears it could lead to

:06:15. > :06:24.substantial job losses or even the sell-off of hundreds of branches.

:06:24. > :06:30.Bosses say bad debts and zero growth have forced the move.

:06:30. > :06:37.Founded a way back in 1838, the link has been central in Scotland.

:06:37. > :06:47.Any trading statement, the owner said their frustration with banking

:06:47. > :06:53.

:06:53. > :06:58.The bank will need to be a smaller bank going forward. I think we

:06:58. > :07:08.could expect to see some slimming down, some cutting of costs, like

:07:08. > :07:14.what we have seen with many other banks. The Clydesdale and Yorkshire

:07:14. > :07:19.banks have 340 branches and 8,000 staff throughout the UK. The

:07:19. > :07:27.company say nothing is been ruled out at this review, it would appear

:07:28. > :07:37.that job losses may be inevitable. Which do not know any of the facts

:07:38. > :07:41.

:07:41. > :07:47.yet. We do not really know what the review contains. The parent company

:07:47. > :07:50.has enough problems of its own back home in Australia and it may seem

:07:50. > :08:00.that they do not want the Clydesdale Bank to be dragging them

:08:00. > :08:10.

:08:10. > :08:16.down with it. Who put on a wig and make-up and posed as an elderly

:08:16. > :08:23.woman to steal 11,000 from her bank account. It was part of an

:08:23. > :08:28.elaborate fraud. It has been carried out by a very callous

:08:28. > :08:33.individual who has preyed on am really vulnerable lady and robbed

:08:33. > :08:38.her of a large sum of money. In the space of a few days, the thief went

:08:38. > :08:48.into several different Royal Bank of Scotland branches withdrawing

:08:48. > :08:52.

:08:52. > :08:57.more than 11,000 in total. dressed up to do this? Yes, he did

:08:57. > :09:05.this, presumably because he was holding a bank card which had a

:09:06. > :09:11.woman's name on it. The rulers, do not take anything at face value and

:09:11. > :09:18.double check everything. The police are keen to get any information

:09:18. > :09:22.which may help them in this case are many other similar case. And

:09:22. > :09:27.their messages, no matter how plausible someone appears, do not

:09:27. > :09:29.ever give out your PIN number. A millionaire property developer

:09:29. > :09:31.accused of assassinating his brother has been telling his trial

:09:31. > :09:34.about how their business relationship began to sour.

:09:34. > :09:37.Mohammed Siddique and two Bulgarian men all deny murdering Toby

:09:37. > :09:39.Siddique at a flat in Glenrothes which the brothers owned. The High

:09:39. > :09:42.Court in Edinburgh was told the brothers' business relationship

:09:42. > :09:45.went bad after Toby became involved in illegal activities.

:09:45. > :09:49.Over the past decade, thousands of Scottish troops have fought in

:09:49. > :09:54.Afghanistan. There are still more than 9,000 British troops based

:09:54. > :09:57.there, but now they are responsible for a much smaller area.

:09:57. > :10:07.Now the emphasis is on developing the country in the run-up to the

:10:07. > :10:08.

:10:08. > :10:14.British withdrawal 2014. Military commanders have always talked about

:10:14. > :10:20.teeth three-pronged strategy here. They want to push back the enemy,

:10:20. > :10:23.all back the ground that you have already won and then bring back the

:10:23. > :10:29.infrastructure. After years of fighting, they are saying that in

:10:29. > :10:35.some parts of Helmand, that strategy is beginning to work. This

:10:35. > :10:41.was once one of the most dangerous areas. The children have never

:10:41. > :10:47.known Afghanistan without fighting or foreign trips. This is their

:10:47. > :10:52.brand new school built within the last six months. Security is much

:10:52. > :10:57.improved in this part of Afghanistan. Soldiers from the

:10:57. > :11:01.Black Watch will patrol. The district governor talks about the

:11:01. > :11:11.need to provide every three things to every be a people after years of

:11:11. > :11:12.

:11:12. > :11:16.fighting. In needs to be seen to come from the Afghan government.

:11:16. > :11:26.The things that we are familiar with them a community level or been

:11:26. > :11:27.

:11:27. > :11:35.talked about. It is the average person is security for their family

:11:35. > :11:41.and the ability to earn money to pay for food and other essentials.

:11:42. > :11:49.When people see that quality of life beginning to happen, we're

:11:49. > :11:55.hoping it will have that domino effect around the area. The units

:11:56. > :12:02.will continue to patrol areas of damp of Afghanistan for another two

:12:02. > :12:06.years, it only then be clear of the exit strategy has worked.

:12:06. > :12:14.A look now at what else has been happening across the country this

:12:14. > :12:23.Tuesday. Cannabis plants worth 100,000 have been found in a house

:12:23. > :12:33.near Lyneham. These two recent incidents have led to the recovery

:12:33. > :12:40.of more than 200,000 worth of cannabis. Special measures to

:12:40. > :12:48.ensure that military personnel can adapt it back to civvy street are

:12:48. > :12:54.being introduced in Dumfries and Galloway. A national campaign was

:12:54. > :13:01.launched in Aberdeenshire against the number of vessels which are

:13:01. > :13:08.fishing under a flag of convenience. The Inverness military tattoo is

:13:08. > :13:14.ending after 60 years. They say that many military units are either

:13:14. > :13:23.being disbanded it up or are on military duty. The theme of the

:13:23. > :13:29.Edinburgh Science Festival lobby a mix of sport, technology and dance.

:13:29. > :13:38.A weary aiming to get the entire public involved, of whether there

:13:38. > :13:43.three years older 83 years old. A big danger have said farewell to a

:13:43. > :13:49.bought which helped many escaped from the Nazi is. It is been

:13:49. > :13:55.returned home to be restored. And Madonna will play at Murrayfield in

:13:56. > :14:02.July. You can keep up-to-date with all these stories and the BBC

:14:02. > :14:07.website. I cannot remember the last time we had Madonna on Reporting

:14:07. > :14:10.Scotland's lifeboats rescued more than eight hundred people last year.

:14:10. > :14:13.According to the RNLI 2011 was one of the most demanding years on

:14:13. > :14:16.record, with the recent storms forcing some crews to launch in

:14:16. > :14:20.hurricane conditions. Our reporter Andrew Anderson has been out with

:14:20. > :14:24.the busiest crew in Scotland. Patrolling the river, the lifeboat

:14:24. > :14:28.crew were the busiest in Scotland last year called out more than 100

:14:28. > :14:35.tonnes. Books like these on the Scottish coast rescued more than

:14:35. > :14:45.800 people in 2011. People like Stephen and his family. They found

:14:45. > :14:51.themselves stranded on an island when the boat broke its anchor line.

:14:51. > :14:57.They do not know until they get on the boat what they are going to. It

:14:58. > :15:03.could be a major incident they are required for. It's a beautiful calm

:15:03. > :15:09.day to day and the lifeboat crews have to be prepared in any

:15:09. > :15:13.conditions. Those conditions can be horrendous. This kind of weather

:15:13. > :15:20.has been a challenge for the lifeboat crews recently. Hurricanes

:15:20. > :15:26.and gales will not stop them. were six or seven significant gales,

:15:26. > :15:33.but Crewe go out in all weathers. People forget the wind is that

:15:33. > :15:43.strong and it is very cold. course most of the crews of

:15:43. > :15:45.

:15:45. > :15:48.volunteers. On call every hour of every day.

:15:48. > :15:51.102-year-old twin sisters from Fife have been recognised as the world's

:15:51. > :15:54.oldest living twins by the Guinness Book of Records. Edith Richie and

:15:54. > :15:57."Evie" Middleton, were born on a farm in 1909, near Newburgh, when

:15:57. > :16:00.King Edward the Seventh was on the throne. They now live together in a

:16:00. > :16:10.care home in Ellon in Aberdeenshire. Edith says her secret to long life

:16:10. > :16:12.

:16:12. > :16:18.is "Simple living, hard work and a good husband." My wife is already

:16:18. > :16:20.102! Big trouble now. Now tonight's

:16:20. > :16:23.sport and the story behind Dan Park's shock retirement. Just three

:16:23. > :16:27.days after losing their opening Six Nations match against England - the

:16:27. > :16:29.man who's taken most of the flack for the defeat has quit. Stand-off

:16:29. > :16:33.Dan Parks is retiring from international rugby with immediate

:16:33. > :16:42.effect. And the national team coach Andy Robinson says he's made the

:16:42. > :16:48.right decision. Jane Lewis reports. Dan Parks last appearance in a

:16:48. > :16:52.Scotland jersey, and fortunately it was not his best. Parkes won 67

:16:52. > :17:02.caps admits he was thinking about hanging up his boots before the Six

:17:02. > :17:09.

:17:09. > :17:18.On reflection, after the game and talking It Over, I have come to a

:17:18. > :17:26.decision at now is the right time to retire. Coming down to that kick,

:17:26. > :17:32.the phase before that and things leading up to it, the criticism he

:17:32. > :17:37.has come under is pretty harsh. has scored 266 points in his

:17:37. > :17:42.Scotland career but his decision to retire is the right one, says the

:17:42. > :17:48.Scotland head coach. I think partly because of an Australian background

:17:48. > :17:53.and partly because sometimes he had the odd howler, we all did, the

:17:53. > :17:57.fans never have brought in to him. Robinson it names the team for

:17:57. > :18:01.Sunday in Wales tomorrow. This man will not be part of it.

:18:01. > :18:04.Andy Murray says his coach Ivan Lendl will make sure he doesn't hit

:18:04. > :18:07.a form slump the way he did last year after the Australian Open.

:18:07. > :18:13.Murray got to the semis this year playing some of the best tennis of

:18:13. > :18:17.his life. Last year he got to the final but then hit a real dip. He

:18:17. > :18:23.spoke to our reporter a short while ago during a rare visit home to

:18:23. > :18:27.Scotland. Good evening from Scotland where

:18:27. > :18:33.Andy Murray and family will be quizzed by a live audience this

:18:33. > :18:37.evening. Let's talk to the man himself. Have you had a chance to

:18:37. > :18:44.reflect on your tournament at the Australian Open? Is your best

:18:44. > :18:49.tennis? I think so. I have not watched the match but from the

:18:49. > :18:54.reaction I have had from people, everyone has been very supportive.

:18:54. > :19:00.It was a great match. It could have gone either way. It did not quite

:19:00. > :19:06.go mind. Hopefully it will be a stepping stone. Your hopes for the

:19:06. > :19:12.rest of the year, can you get the Grand Slam in 2012, you have a new

:19:12. > :19:18.coach? It is a huge year. Lots to look forward to. The last the years

:19:18. > :19:23.I started well and had a tough period. I will work hard in the

:19:23. > :19:29.next few days and make sure I do not have a slump. I am looking

:19:29. > :19:38.forward to the rest of the year. I even has been a great help so far.

:19:38. > :19:44.It should be good. -- even Lendl. And you are trying to get kids

:19:44. > :19:50.active in sport. Yes, it is something the whole family loves

:19:50. > :19:58.sport since we were kids. Me and Jamie used to play everything from

:19:58. > :20:03.golf, tennis, squash and rugby. I love boxing. It is something that

:20:04. > :20:07.is really important for kids to stay active and my mum has lots of

:20:08. > :20:14.experience in how to deal with kids that play sports to a high level.

:20:14. > :20:19.She has done a good job with centre. Have fun with that and I had the

:20:19. > :20:22.questions are better than mine. I have to its hand back to the studio.

:20:22. > :20:25.The first Scot to be selected for Great Britain at London twenty

:20:25. > :20:28.twelve is being tipped as a possible gold medallist. The sailor

:20:28. > :20:30.Luke Patience from Rhu in Dunbartonshire is having a

:20:30. > :20:34.remarkable year - that's why The team GB sailing manager is

:20:34. > :20:44.predicting great things for him and also why Rhona McLeod went to Miami

:20:44. > :20:48.

:20:48. > :20:55.This is Miami, famous for Art Deco, Centre's, dogs in costumes, beaches,

:20:55. > :20:58.palm trees and more dogs in costumes. Miami is also a Necker

:20:58. > :21:04.for sailing and it's here we find the future Olympian Luke Patience

:21:04. > :21:14.he began his career in Dunbartonshire. This is my office,

:21:14. > :21:16.

:21:16. > :21:26.look at it. Fantastic. I do not take it for granted. Welcome to

:21:26. > :21:26.

:21:26. > :21:33.sailing. This is Stewart, this is my crew. She has performed well for

:21:33. > :21:39.us. It is like Formula One on water. Built to go fast and race. It is

:21:39. > :21:46.not about comfort or pleasure. It is a rough and fast ride. It is wet

:21:46. > :21:53.and exciting. He is training in Miami for London 2012. Yes, the

:21:53. > :21:58.first Scot to be selected. I had no idea. It's a great privilege. There

:21:58. > :22:06.are not many of us in Scotland. We are a minority. To be one of the

:22:06. > :22:10.few is fantastic. I am very proud. They have had a fantastic year.

:22:10. > :22:14.Rarely have they been off the podium. They have a good chance of

:22:14. > :22:23.delivering a medal in the summer Olympic Games. I am certain they

:22:23. > :22:28.And if you liked that you'll love Sport Nation on BBC Two at seven

:22:28. > :22:37.o'clock. You can always tape the one show. There's more Luke

:22:37. > :22:40.Patience in Miami, Andy Murray in Melbourne and some rugby too.

:22:40. > :22:45.Thank you very much. The sport of fishing is dominated by men. There

:22:45. > :22:48.are relatively few women anglers. But some of the biggest salmon have

:22:48. > :22:53.been landed by the fairer sex. Now a new name has been added to that

:22:54. > :23:00.list. Colin Wight has been to meet her.

:23:00. > :23:05.I have fished since I was very young, I have fished in most rivers

:23:05. > :23:10.since I was young. Barber's 14 when I caught my first big salmon. I

:23:10. > :23:16.love everything about fishing. I love being out on the river. I love

:23:16. > :23:20.the birds and wildlife, everything. June it leads to being out on the

:23:20. > :23:27.river. It is only a few yards from the home and casting school she

:23:27. > :23:34.shares with her husband, Tom. They are so dedicated to the sport they

:23:34. > :23:44.were married in their wages. Jane is an expert, she will be awarded a

:23:44. > :23:47.

:23:47. > :23:54.trophy for landing the heaviest Tom is not jealous. Not really.

:23:54. > :24:00.There is bound to. There is bound to. I do not think it would get to

:24:00. > :24:04.divorce stages. I do not know, if she keeps catching bigger fish! She

:24:04. > :24:09.landed her fish in competition with three men and in the face of a

:24:09. > :24:15.howling gale. The biggest salmon was landed by a woman, that was on

:24:15. > :24:21.the River Tay by Georgina Ballantyne in 1922. Jane would like
