:00:20. > :00:23.postponed - the Rangers administrators delay the

:00:23. > :00:30.announcement of a preferred bidder because of plans to change SPL

:00:30. > :00:40.financial rules. Shoppers and staff tell a trial of their shock when a

:00:40. > :00:41.

:00:41. > :00:44.Glasgow gangster was shot dead in a supermarket car-park.

:00:44. > :00:52.Later in the programme... The pianist who is defying paralysis to

:00:52. > :00:58.perform classics with just one hand. I focus on something else and I

:00:58. > :01:08.forget I have none this. It is just a little bubble when I sit at the

:01:08. > :01:11.

:01:12. > :01:21.piano. The SPL promotion party will soon be in full swing. Ross County

:01:22. > :01:22.

:01:22. > :01:26.have already arrived. We will soon get the festivities underway.

:01:26. > :01:29.Shoppers and staff who were at a Glasgow supermarket on the day a

:01:29. > :01:32.gangster was shot dead in the car park have been telling a murder

:01:32. > :01:36.trial of their shock at what they saw. Kevin Carroll was killed as he

:01:36. > :01:42.sat in a car at the Asda storein Robroyston in January 2010. From

:01:42. > :01:45.the High Court in Glasgow Catriona Renton reports. The piece of a

:01:45. > :01:52.normal Wednesday afternoon shattered by a brutal murder when

:01:52. > :01:57.this by dozens of innocent bystanders. Masked gunmen

:01:57. > :02:03.approached the black halved Kevin Carroll was sitting and where he

:02:03. > :02:08.was shot dead. -- the black car. This woman was putting her shopping

:02:08. > :02:18.in the back for car and heard a speech when a car pulled to a car -

:02:18. > :02:20.

:02:20. > :02:25.- pulled to a halt. She said... This man was on a shift collecting

:02:25. > :02:30.trolleys in the car-park. He turned around when he heard the car. He

:02:30. > :02:39.saw two men firing at the back windows of the black car. He said

:02:39. > :02:48.he did not feel in danger. This man is a community club volunteer who

:02:48. > :02:52.was waiting for his wife. He said he heard a lot of popping noises.

:02:52. > :02:59.He realised something serious had happened when the security guards

:02:59. > :03:03.told people to keep away from the car. Alison Cameron was driving her

:03:03. > :03:09.son to the cashpoint, they were leaving the cash point and her son

:03:09. > :03:15.said he was aware of crazy driving. Their car was overtaking at an

:03:15. > :03:20.estimated 70 miles an hour by dark blue golf. This paramedic also gave

:03:20. > :03:26.evidence. He said he looked on the back seat of the car, there was a

:03:26. > :03:31.man lying there. The man had been wounded on his forehead. It was

:03:31. > :03:40.like a hole in his head. Ross Moore in denies murdering Kevin Carroll

:03:40. > :03:43.and has lodged a special defence of incrimination, blaming eight others.

:03:43. > :03:47.The Rangers administrators say had been forced to delay the

:03:47. > :03:55.announcement of a preferred bidder due to SPL plans to change its

:03:55. > :04:00.rules regarding clubs facing insolvency. A meeting will include

:04:00. > :04:04.tougher sanctions for clubs in administration. The future of

:04:04. > :04:09.Rangers remains in doubt. The prospect of the club are becoming a

:04:09. > :04:14.new company remains a real possibility. Under these new

:04:14. > :04:19.proposals, should Rangers become the new company, they would be

:04:19. > :04:22.deducted 10 points for each of the next two seasons. She they say in

:04:22. > :04:29.administration, they will be deducted one-third of the points

:04:29. > :04:32.they have amassed this season. -- should they stay. It would need to

:04:32. > :04:40.eight of the 12 clubs to liberated these proposals for them to be

:04:40. > :04:45.adopted. There would also be A75 percent reduction in payments to

:04:45. > :04:52.any new club be launched. This would require 11 out of the 12 SPL

:04:52. > :05:00.clubs to agree. Where is the sale of Rangers? Near ministers say they

:05:00. > :05:08.are delaying the sale. They said in a statement... -- Rangers

:05:08. > :05:12.administrators said. With three beds on the table, the

:05:12. > :05:18.administrators had been hoping to name a preferred bidder but that

:05:18. > :05:23.process is now on hold. Jonathan, where does this leave

:05:23. > :05:32.Rangers? An uncertain future has become even more uncertain after

:05:32. > :05:38.this. The Rangers administrators think this is very unhelpful. It

:05:38. > :05:42.has thrown a spanner in the works. They have no idea when or if they

:05:42. > :05:48.will have a preferred bidder in place. One of the new bidders may

:05:48. > :05:53.look at the proposals and decide to walk away. They are digesting the

:05:53. > :06:00.proposals this evening. Rangers are not happy. Some SPL chairmen are

:06:00. > :06:04.not happy either. Some take a more pragmatic view. As usual with these

:06:04. > :06:11.meetings, consensus will be a difficult thing. Interesting to see

:06:11. > :06:14.how this develops on April 30th. Fish caught close to the scene of a

:06:14. > :06:17.gas leak on the Elgin platform in the North Sea have not been

:06:17. > :06:20.contaminated. That is according to the results of tests carried out

:06:20. > :06:27.for the Scottish government who say the environmental impact appears to

:06:27. > :06:33.be minimal. Our reporter is in Aberdeen tonight. The fish have

:06:33. > :06:36.passed the taste test and that is one good thing. The research vessel

:06:36. > :06:41.was out at the exclusion zone around the Elgin platform at the

:06:41. > :06:46.weekend picking up samples. The scientists have found something

:06:46. > :06:52.which goes to proving what it would have said on long - the effects of

:06:52. > :06:59.this gas leak on the environment are minimal. Chemical analysis --

:06:59. > :07:04.chemical analysis from around the platform taking place in the

:07:04. > :07:09.Laboratory in Aberdeen. Experts chosen because of their sensitive

:07:09. > :07:15.palate have tasted different fish closed -- caught in the exclusion

:07:15. > :07:21.zone. Their tastebuds tell them the fish are not contaminated. There is

:07:21. > :07:26.no evidence of contamination or trace of hydrocarbon in the fish.

:07:26. > :07:33.We're very reassured by that. The results of the samples taken will

:07:33. > :07:37.be made available later this week. At this stage, as we expected,

:07:37. > :07:41.there has been an animal in -- impact on the environment.

:07:41. > :07:47.Greenpeace have also been around the platform taking samples. It

:07:47. > :07:51.says is results will not be known until next week. Gas is still

:07:51. > :07:56.leaking from their Elgin platform, 17 days after was abandoned. The

:07:56. > :08:00.Scottish government says they will continue to monitor the impact on

:08:00. > :08:05.the environment. Two Tal say they hope to stop the lake by the end of

:08:05. > :08:11.the month. It was the company's managing director who said in an

:08:11. > :08:15.interview today that if putting that into the well could be started

:08:15. > :08:19.soon, it could be completed successfully by the end of the

:08:19. > :08:24.month. Friends of their Scott and said to date it believes that the

:08:24. > :08:31.effects of the gas leak could be cumulative and the real effects

:08:31. > :08:35.will not be known for some time. -- friends of the Earth Scotland.

:08:35. > :08:39.Still to come on the programme - how the police are making

:08:39. > :08:45.preparations for the Olympics in Scotland.

:08:45. > :08:49.Tonight's sport comes from Somerset Park where first division champions

:08:49. > :08:53.at the Ross County are the visitors. I will give you a brief history of

:08:53. > :09:03.the club. We will have a chat with the Ross County manager to see what

:09:03. > :09:07.

:09:07. > :09:10.he makes of the prospect of life in the SPL. All that to come come a

:09:10. > :09:13.little later. A former detective inspector in the Fife force has

:09:13. > :09:15.gone on trial accused of suppressing evidence in a murder

:09:15. > :09:18.investigation. It is alleged that 53 year-old Richard Munro altered

:09:18. > :09:23.witness statements to secure the conviction of the two accused.

:09:23. > :09:29.Julie Peacock reports from the High Court in Edinburgh.

:09:29. > :09:33.An Drew Forsyth was murdered in Dunfermline in 1995. Richard Munro

:09:34. > :09:39.was the policeman in charge of it their investigation which accused

:09:40. > :09:43.the two friends of Drew Forsyth of the murder. It claimed that on 3rd

:09:43. > :09:49.November the left his body in his living room. The men were convicted

:09:49. > :09:53.and served 10 years in jail. Today in court it was alleged the ex-

:09:53. > :09:59.policeman withheld evidence which contradicted his version of events

:09:59. > :10:03.and deliberately misled his bosses and the court. The case against

:10:03. > :10:07.Richard Munro less 13 people who told the police at the time they

:10:08. > :10:14.had seen the murder victim after they thought he had been murdered.

:10:14. > :10:18.In one case, almost a week later. It is alleged Richard Munro did not

:10:18. > :10:22.pass on their statements to the Crown. He claims some of the

:10:23. > :10:28.witnesses were unreliable. It is claimed he pressurise a witness to

:10:28. > :10:34.change her statement. People also told police they had visited the

:10:34. > :10:40.home of the victim on 7th November. Based on no bed St -- body when

:10:40. > :10:44.they looked in the window. This means Mr Forsyth could still be

:10:44. > :10:52.alive on the 7th but this was deleted from evidence passed to

:10:52. > :10:54.lawyers. Richard Munro denies all the charges.

:10:54. > :10:58.The first extensive research into the new Schools Curriculum suggests

:10:58. > :11:00.many teachers are anxious about its implementation. The study by

:11:00. > :11:03.Stirling University found that while many teachers welcome the

:11:03. > :11:07.thinking behind the changes, they also had concerns about putting

:11:07. > :11:10.them into practice. However, the Scottish government says great

:11:10. > :11:14.strides have been made since information was collected in the

:11:14. > :11:17.last school year. The final tranche of soldiers of

:11:17. > :11:23.the Edinburgh-based 3rd Battalion the Rifles leaves this evening for

:11:23. > :11:25.a six-month tour of Afghanistan. They are being deployed in Helmand

:11:25. > :11:27.Province, advising on operational issues, including training and

:11:28. > :11:31.mentoring Afghan security forces to prepare them for when British and

:11:32. > :11:39.American troops leave. The Rifles last tour of Afghanistan was in

:11:39. > :11:42.2010. The disruption of last Saturday's boat race by a lone

:11:42. > :11:46.protester has highlighted the issue of security around sporting events

:11:46. > :11:55.like the Olympic Games. Police in Scotland are now making

:11:55. > :11:59.preparations for the Olympic events be held here. This is a site which

:11:59. > :12:04.will become more common over the summer months. In June the Olympic

:12:04. > :12:10.torch arrives in Scotland. Glasgow horse Olympic football the

:12:10. > :12:15.following month. Policing both events is a massive operation as

:12:15. > :12:21.people gather in the city. pulling Glasgow are likely to see

:12:21. > :12:26.firearms officers outside hotels for the duration of the tournament.

:12:26. > :12:34.-- people in Glasgow. They need not be alarmed. The security would be

:12:34. > :12:38.the same as if the when and Manchester or London.

:12:38. > :12:41.disruption to the boat race at the weekend demonstrates this security

:12:41. > :12:47.threat for high-profile sporting events. The man who oversaw the

:12:47. > :12:55.visit of the Pope in 2010 is also in charge of making sure the torch

:12:56. > :13:00.arrives safely. The Olympics gives us a different challenge. We have

:13:00. > :13:08.to make sure we're all working together to the same plan and we

:13:08. > :13:16.operate in the same way. Areas go officially becomes a whole city on

:13:16. > :13:21.25th July. -- Glasgow. Hampden is no stranger to staging big events.

:13:21. > :13:26.The Olympics present police with a whole new set of security

:13:26. > :13:31.challenges. Hampden will host eight games over 10 days. Some matches

:13:31. > :13:35.will be played back to back. The police say there will be fewer

:13:35. > :13:39.visible officers than at an Old Firm match. There is no denying

:13:39. > :13:45.that it brings an increased threat level but we're ready for that. We

:13:45. > :13:49.have planned for it. It is business as usual in terms of policing the

:13:49. > :13:55.Games. There is an added layer on top of that as well which will help

:13:55. > :13:59.us rise to the challenge. security bill is estimated at more

:13:59. > :14:05.than 1 million. The police will plans put in place now can be used

:14:05. > :14:09.again when the Common wealth gains come to Glasgow in 2014. -- the

:14:09. > :14:13.Commonwealth Games. A look at what else has been

:14:13. > :14:16.happening in the country. The Scottish government advert has

:14:16. > :14:20.been banned for suggesting that the two pandsent by China to Edinburgh

:14:20. > :14:26.zoo were free. Tthey were in fact leased at substantial cost to the

:14:27. > :14:31.charity which owns the zoo. Dumfries and Galloway has more

:14:31. > :14:37.reached -- roads needing repair than any other region in Scotland.

:14:37. > :14:42.48 % of the network requires attention, compared to the national

:14:42. > :14:45.network average of 36 %. A public consultation over the

:14:45. > :14:48.proposed redevelopment of a large part of Pitlochry ended today. It

:14:48. > :14:52.followed local opposition to plans for flats, retail units and a hotel

:14:52. > :14:55.on the vacant site. Scientists in Aberdeen have been given a quarter

:14:55. > :14:57.of a million pounds field trial a process to save the world's dying

:14:57. > :15:07.bees. The technique attacks the Varrao

:15:07. > :15:10.

:15:10. > :15:20.mite which kills them. We have to protect her bees. Mankind is

:15:20. > :15:25.

:15:25. > :15:29.dependent on them. This technique After laying unclaimed for three

:15:29. > :15:33.and a half centuries, the fund is worth...

:15:33. > :15:37.A artist Alison Watt has unveiled a self-portrait made when still a

:15:37. > :15:42.student. The painting was presented to the Scottish National Portrait

:15:42. > :15:46.Gallery by the Art Fund. It is an amazing thing because it has a

:15:46. > :15:51.painting I looked at every day and have always had with me. To have it

:15:51. > :15:55.in this collection with so many iconic works as a great thrill.

:15:55. > :16:00.The Cirque du Soleil's new show opens at the SECC today and runs

:16:00. > :16:04.until 15th April. They were rehearsing this afternoon for what

:16:04. > :16:11.is billed as an oak to the power of youth.

:16:11. > :16:17.More stories from Urania on the BBC Scotland website.

:16:17. > :16:20.-- your area. A gifted music student at Aberdeen

:16:20. > :16:25.University has had to relearn how to play piano again with just one

:16:25. > :16:35.hand. He is now playing pieces most of us would find difficult with all

:16:35. > :16:39.

:16:39. > :16:44.Paul Murray began playing piano at the age of 15 in his native

:16:44. > :16:50.Bellshill. He is now 22 but in his first year at Aberdeen University,

:16:50. > :17:00.he developed a brain tumour or it has left his right hand almost

:17:00. > :17:01.

:17:01. > :17:05.useless. A couple of times when I sat back and had had two or three

:17:05. > :17:13.Brain surgeries. I thought, what is the point? That only lasted for a

:17:13. > :17:16.few showers and then I thought, let's just do it. Let's get better.

:17:16. > :17:22.Inspiration came from the man responsible responsible for this

:17:22. > :17:27.massive Christmas hit. Paul's tutor at Aberdeen suggested he played PCs

:17:27. > :17:36.composed solely for left hand. it comes to left-handed piano

:17:36. > :17:41.playing, I am very passionate. It is almost as if it is my own. When

:17:41. > :17:47.I start playing, it is not top order difficult. I forget

:17:47. > :17:50.everything that is going on in the world. One I am focused solely on

:17:50. > :17:57.something else, I forget the numbness or pins and needles. It

:17:57. > :17:59.just seems to be our little bubble around me.

:18:00. > :18:05.There are a surprisingly large number of pieces written just for

:18:05. > :18:10.one hand. Poll has also adapting others written for two. Despite the

:18:10. > :18:15.major setbacks, he is destined for a career in music. I am feeling

:18:15. > :18:25.better than I haven't a long time. It is looking great and there is a

:18:25. > :18:28.

:18:28. > :18:34.The oldest woman in Scotland has died peacefully in her Speyside

:18:34. > :18:39.home at the age of 110. Janet Sheed Roberts was born in Moray in 1901.

:18:39. > :18:48.She studied at Glasgow and Edinburgh universities, the only

:18:48. > :18:52.woman and her law class in the capital.

:18:52. > :18:57.It is a long way for Ross County fans to come up all the way from

:18:57. > :19:00.Dingwall to celebrate their club winning promotion to the SPL but

:19:00. > :19:07.we're expecting a couple of hundred of them here shortly to watch their

:19:07. > :19:12.team playing at Ayr United. The team would have probably expected

:19:12. > :19:16.to need a draw tonight but because of last night's results, they do

:19:16. > :19:20.not even need one point. They have all the benefits of a party without

:19:20. > :19:25.having to bother about the result. There is plenty to celebrate like

:19:25. > :19:28.being promoted to Scotland's top flight just 18 years after being

:19:28. > :19:32.admitted to the Scottish Football League.

:19:32. > :19:37.These Dingwall diehards are probably the most far travelled

:19:37. > :19:47.fans in Division One. Today, it is a 300 mile round trip to Air Show

:19:47. > :19:47.

:19:48. > :19:53.at, full of the joys of spring and more importantly of SPL promotion.

:19:54. > :19:58.I great feeling like now and everyone is enjoying it. Superb,

:19:58. > :20:05.fantastic. I great day out so hopefully we will win again today.

:20:05. > :20:10.18 years ago, we were in a Highland League. This is a dream. It has

:20:10. > :20:15.been quite a journey for the Staggies. Formed in Dingwall in

:20:15. > :20:20.1929, they started life in the Highland League. This set up a few

:20:20. > :20:25.years when it elected to the Scottish Football League in 1994.

:20:25. > :20:29.They motored along nicely winning the Third Division in 1989 and the

:20:29. > :20:34.second in 2008. Until now, their greatest achievement was reaching

:20:34. > :20:38.the final of the Scottish Cup two years ago, beating Celtic in the

:20:38. > :20:41.semi-finals before losing to Dundee United in the final. That has been

:20:41. > :20:51.eclipsed this season by winning the First Division with five matches to

:20:51. > :20:53.

:20:53. > :20:59.spare. Next stop, the Scottish Premier League. Party on. Thank you.

:20:59. > :21:04.A few parties in the next few weeks. If you support an SPL team and

:21:04. > :21:12.travel regularly to see them, here is a sneak preview of the newest

:21:12. > :21:16.destination on the SPL travelled up. -- travel map. One man who knows

:21:16. > :21:22.more about the history of Ross County is the current manager Derek

:21:22. > :21:25.Adams. Congratulations and thank you for joining us. In the SPL 18

:21:26. > :21:30.years after joining the Scottish Football League. How does it feel?

:21:30. > :21:35.At terrific achievement. We have worked away from the Third Division

:21:35. > :21:40.through to the First Division and ultimately we have made our way

:21:40. > :21:45.into the Premier League. What is the secret other club's success?

:21:45. > :21:50.What is the essence of Ross County? We have had a good sense of

:21:50. > :21:56.togetherness and the continuity through the years. We have had five

:21:56. > :22:01.players who played and the second division championship winning team

:22:01. > :22:06.and by 10 today who played in the Scottish Cup final. After promotion,

:22:06. > :22:13.not much to play for tonight? is an unbeaten run to be played for

:22:13. > :22:16.tonight. We would like to extend a run of 29 games unbeaten to 30.

:22:16. > :22:26.Alienated at the end of the table and they will be looking for points.

:22:26. > :22:31.What are you looking for most from life in the SPL next season? This

:22:31. > :22:35.stadium redevelopment, where we are taking that up to SPL standards,

:22:35. > :22:41.will be something to look forward to. Thank you for joining us and

:22:41. > :22:48.good luck next season. One more story to bring you tonight

:22:48. > :22:52.- I'll fish around Thoroton my notes which got absolutely soaked.

:22:52. > :22:57.Andy Murray says he is not even thinking about finishing his career

:22:57. > :23:02.without finish it -- winning a Grand Slam. The British No. 1 says

:23:02. > :23:05.that despite having to contend with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Roger

:23:05. > :23:11.Federer and Rafael Nadal, it just makes him all the more determined

:23:11. > :23:16.to succeed. I am aware of how good those guys are but I can win

:23:16. > :23:24.against them and beat them, that adds to the achievement even more.
