:00:26. > :00:31.A dramatic late night surge in a leafy Glasgow suburb - Police find

:00:31. > :00:34.a significant stash of firearms, including what appear to be army

:00:34. > :00:37.assault rifles. The return from Afghanistan - we

:00:37. > :00:40.hear from the men of the Black Watch, who are home to their

:00:40. > :00:48.families after six months in Helmand Province.

:00:48. > :00:53.It is a cup semi-final weekend - Paul Hartley has played for all

:00:53. > :00:57.four clubs involved. On the weekend a world remembers

:00:57. > :01:05.the Titanic, we hear the story of one father's faith, courage and

:01:05. > :01:12.ultimate sacrifice and a tribute to the grandson he never met. People

:01:12. > :01:16.like this, as they say about good men, are scarce.

:01:16. > :01:19.A major police operation is continuing this evening at a former

:01:19. > :01:23.farmer north of Glasgow after the discovery of what police are

:01:23. > :01:28.describing as a significant stash of weapons. It was found by one of

:01:28. > :01:32.the occupants of the farm he told BBC Scotland it includes assault

:01:32. > :01:39.rifles, handguns, a shotgun and a quantity of Annette -- of

:01:39. > :01:43.ammunition. This was just part of a stash of weapons found in a field

:01:43. > :01:47.in a Glasgow suburb last night. It appears to be the standard weapon

:01:47. > :01:55.of issue for the British Army. Here is what appears to be two magazines

:01:55. > :01:58.of ammunition for assault rifles. These pictures sent to us by the

:01:58. > :02:03.man who found weapons lying near the farmhouse he lives in. He

:02:03. > :02:08.alerted the police around this time last night. A forensic team worked

:02:08. > :02:13.on into the night recovering guns. The man who found them believes

:02:13. > :02:20.he'd stop the assault rifles, a shotgun, a rifle and handguns. --

:02:20. > :02:25.he saw. I was shown the area today. It has been at the centre of the

:02:25. > :02:30.search. The was a range of firearms found and I cannot go into the

:02:30. > :02:36.exact numbers, but what I will tell you is, it is a significant find

:02:36. > :02:43.and our investigations are on going to find out who brought the weapons.

:02:43. > :02:48.Was there ammunition found as well? Yes, there was ammunition found.

:02:48. > :02:53.significant quantities? Yes, insignificant quantities. The old

:02:53. > :03:03.farmhouse next to it was nicknamed by neighbours. It is known as

:03:03. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:06.heartbreaker tell. -- it is known as heartbreak Hotel. The police are

:03:06. > :03:12.saying this morning that they found a quantity of firearms and

:03:12. > :03:16.ammunition. How does that make you feel? Absolutely shocked. Fairly

:03:16. > :03:20.horrified, actually. There is not much more I can say about it. I am

:03:21. > :03:25.surprised and horrified. The stash of arms being found just yards from

:03:25. > :03:29.the local secondary school was another major concern for residents.

:03:29. > :03:34.The pharmacist on the other side of the playing field, so it is very

:03:34. > :03:39.close to the school. -- the Farmer is on the other side. It is

:03:39. > :03:44.probably good at the school is not in today. The search was spread out

:03:44. > :03:48.to include fields and woodland. While officers combed the ground,

:03:48. > :03:55.it was surveyed by the air by helicopters. -- it was survived

:03:55. > :04:03.from the air -- it was surveyed from the air. There is a major

:04:03. > :04:08.inquiry under way as to just too dumb to these guns here and why.

:04:08. > :04:17.-- as to food dumps to these guns here and why.

:04:17. > :04:21.In what condition where the guns found? When you think that just

:04:21. > :04:28.goes to magazines we showed you, each one of them could hold 30

:04:28. > :04:32.rounds each. I understand that the weapons and ammunition were wrapped

:04:32. > :04:38.in a plastic tarpaulin inside a bag, and the bike was inside a plastic

:04:38. > :04:45.bin bags. -- red was inside a plastic bin. That seems to indicate

:04:45. > :04:48.that at least some effort had been made to make sure that the guns

:04:48. > :04:53.were still capable of being fired and used. When you think about the

:04:53. > :04:58.size of this - that was found, and you think about Glasgow, a city

:04:58. > :05:02.with a reputation still for gangland violence, that is a

:05:03. > :05:07.frightening prospect. The other issue that will become interesting

:05:07. > :05:12.is of the police confirm that that is indeed an assault rifle,

:05:12. > :05:19.standard issue for the British Army. It is among the most lethal of

:05:19. > :05:26.assault weapons. Quite how that ended up as part of this - will be

:05:26. > :05:29.very interesting indeed. -- of this stash of weapons.

:05:29. > :05:33.Or three bidders for Rangers Football Club have changed their

:05:33. > :05:38.conditions of all for following a statement from the Scottish Premier

:05:38. > :05:46.League. The clubs and ministers and -- the club's administrators say

:05:46. > :05:49.that all three remain injured Chester. -- remain interested.

:05:49. > :05:53.The last group of Black Watch soldiers to complete a six month

:05:53. > :05:57.tour of duty in Afghanistan have returned to their base at Fort

:05:57. > :06:00.George near Inverness. The battalion was sent to central

:06:00. > :06:03.Helmand Province last year to help train Afghan security for what --

:06:03. > :06:11.security forces. A series of homecoming parade has now been

:06:11. > :06:20.planned. Back in his homeland, miles away

:06:20. > :06:23.from Helmand Province. He was on foot patrol just few days ago.

:06:23. > :06:27.affect everyone in different ways when you're there. Most of the time,

:06:27. > :06:31.you have to get on with the job. You have to stay switched on to

:06:31. > :06:34.make sure you do not have any casualties. He is one of over 400

:06:34. > :06:38.Black Watch soldiers deployed from Fort George to central Helmand

:06:38. > :06:47.Province. They helped train the Afghan security forces in a region

:06:47. > :06:56.of around 140,000 people. It was about Hearts and minds. It was

:06:56. > :07:00.extremely challenging. We got through in the end. The Scottish

:07:00. > :07:04.Italian returns unscathed, despite a number of recent attacks on other

:07:04. > :07:09.trips from enemy within. We have had a number of high-profile

:07:09. > :07:14.incident. Every day, there are thousands of patrols working

:07:14. > :07:17.alongside the Afghan security forces, the police and the army,

:07:17. > :07:24.where the relationship and trust with them is everything and is

:07:24. > :07:29.strong. The soldiers will start a series of homecoming parades across

:07:29. > :07:36.the country next week. Not before a weekend of enjoying some of the

:07:36. > :07:41.comforts of being home. What have you missed? Probably freedom and

:07:41. > :07:48.being able to go out and do things and not be stuck in a small camp.

:07:48. > :07:53.just want to go back to my bed, to be honest!

:07:53. > :07:57.You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come - film

:07:57. > :08:01.stars have a different kind. Scottish astronomers make two

:08:01. > :08:05.documentaries to promote their work. It is Cup semi-final weekend. We

:08:05. > :08:09.are looking ahead to the big games with a man who knows all four teams

:08:09. > :08:19.better than most. We will also be hearing from this man about his

:08:19. > :08:25.future. That and a bit more later 100 years ago tomorrow night, the

:08:25. > :08:30.Titanic struck the iceberg which would sink it and killed 1500 of

:08:30. > :08:36.its passengers. Among them was John par putt -- among them was John

:08:36. > :08:41.Harper, a Baptist preacher from Glasgow who made an enormous

:08:41. > :08:46.personal sacrifice to save another passenger. We took up the story.

:08:46. > :08:54.The last interview with Titanic's last Scottish survivor. When we

:08:54. > :09:01.were some distance away, there was a blaze of light. She dipped. And

:09:01. > :09:06.then she went down. She was six years old, the daughter of John

:09:06. > :09:13.Harper, a widower and Evangelista would be invited to preach in

:09:13. > :09:18.America. -- and Evangelista who had been invited to preach in America.

:09:18. > :09:24.She had no impression of panic. I am sure she had no impression at

:09:24. > :09:28.the time that she was not going to see her father again. There was not

:09:29. > :09:34.a dramatic farewell kiss, or anything like that. It was very

:09:34. > :09:39.quick and matter-of-fact. John made it his pastoral mission to support

:09:40. > :09:48.those on board the sinking ship. He drifted upon a young man in the icy

:09:48. > :09:54.water. He asked him, are you saved? The man, of course, replied, what

:09:54. > :10:03.you mean? And he said, people even the Lord Jesus Christ, and the man

:10:03. > :10:08.said know. At that point, John gave the unbeliever his life jacket,

:10:08. > :10:15.saying, you need is more than me. Incredibly, that man was one of a

:10:15. > :10:20.handful plucked from the sea. This weekend, a memorial to John Harper

:10:20. > :10:27.will be rededicated. Only the purpose of the Lord will stand.

:10:27. > :10:31.life will be celebrated in a specially commissioned drama at the

:10:31. > :10:34.Baptist Church he helped found and which now bears his name. We feel

:10:34. > :10:40.that the focus should be on a man who showed his faith even the most

:10:40. > :10:48.horrendous conditions. Sh during the Gospel was his passion. It is

:10:48. > :10:58.certainly a memory we do not want to lose. -- shading the Gospel.

:10:58. > :11:02.People like this, as they say about good men, are scarce.

:11:02. > :11:06.Gordon Pont, the grandson of John Harper, ending that report.

:11:06. > :11:11.Two council gardeners have been telling the Kevin "Gerbil" Carroll

:11:11. > :11:15.murder trial of their shock at finding gun stunt in a shopping bag

:11:15. > :11:22.outside Coatbridge library. It was at the trial of Ross Monaghan in

:11:22. > :11:27.Glasgow. The 30 year-old denies shooting Mr Karel dead -- shooting

:11:27. > :11:34.Kevin Carroll dead. A milestone has been reached and

:11:34. > :11:41.the decommissioning of Chapel Cross nuclear power station. The first of

:11:41. > :11:48.its four reactors is now completely D Field. -- now completely de

:11:48. > :11:52.fuelled. The sound of a barmaid redesignated

:11:52. > :11:55.-- the Scottish government insists no final decision has been taken.

:11:56. > :12:01.It has emerged a management plan has been drafted.

:12:01. > :12:06.A long-established Aberdeen joinery workshop faces closure with the

:12:06. > :12:11.loss of 62 jobs. The order is blaming a downturn in activity

:12:11. > :12:14.levels for the move. It has been on the site since 1880.

:12:14. > :12:19.The construction union says it is very concerned and will meet with

:12:19. > :12:23.management next week. Councillors have approved plans for

:12:23. > :12:31.36 houses to be built on the site of a disused creamery in

:12:31. > :12:36.Kirkcudbright. Talks are under way between

:12:36. > :12:43.Pentland ferries and ports on the Firth of Forth to bring back a

:12:43. > :12:46.ferry on the Firth of Forth. It is 20 years since the very last ran.

:12:46. > :12:52.Shetland Council is setting up a Facebook page to try to encourage

:12:52. > :13:00.young people to vote in the council elections. But will it work? Using

:13:00. > :13:06.Facebook might break -- might make voting more accessible. There are a

:13:06. > :13:11.lot of people worry John Facebook why think it would be a good idea.

:13:11. > :13:18.Dundee's two tallest buildings, one Derby Street, are said to be

:13:18. > :13:28.demolished. Are about to be demolished. There

:13:28. > :13:31.

:13:31. > :13:37.Is anybody out there? You would probably not put studying the

:13:37. > :13:41.universe at the top of a list of things Scotland is good at. But the

:13:41. > :13:47.Royal Observatory in Edinburgh has commissioned two documentaries to

:13:48. > :13:52.explain to the public the important work they do.

:13:52. > :13:58.Everything you look at in the night sky - it took time for like to

:13:58. > :14:04.travel from there to hear. These films tell the story of the

:14:04. > :14:08.world-class astronomy going on in Scotland.

:14:08. > :14:14.Scottish astronomers have been involved in a variety of

:14:14. > :14:24.breakthroughs. Including, for example, one of the most successful

:14:24. > :14:29.

:14:29. > :14:35.telescopes for detecting extra soul of planets. Extra-solar.

:14:35. > :14:41.One of the film's Features amateur astronomy like that carried out by

:14:41. > :14:48.Caroline. From her home in Helensburgh she discovered a planet

:14:48. > :14:52.in a solar system beyond our own. It would be nice if people left

:14:52. > :14:58.after the screening and said, that was cool what that will achieve,

:14:58. > :15:05.why don't I eight search planet hunters?

:15:05. > :15:10.The film will premiere in Edinburgh before to in Scotland.

:15:10. > :15:16.Cycling enthusiasts are heading to the SECC in Glasgow this weekend

:15:16. > :15:18.for the Scottish Bike Show. BMX stunt riders and a world record

:15:19. > :15:28.breaker, Graeme Obree, are taking part in an event which is big

:15:29. > :15:29.

:15:29. > :15:39.business for Scotland. Visitors can get advice on everything from

:15:39. > :15:43.equipment to fitness to own safety. And now the sport. A small football

:15:43. > :15:49.trivia question for you? Can you name the current Scottish football

:15:49. > :15:56.manager who has played for all the semi-finalists in the Scottish Cup?

:15:56. > :16:02.Celtic play harps on Sunday and Aberdeen play Hibernian tomorrow. -

:16:02. > :16:09.- Celtic play Heart of Midlothian. Who would be better placed to run

:16:09. > :16:19.the rule over the teams than a person who has played for them all?

:16:19. > :16:20.

:16:20. > :16:26.I am Paul Hartley and I have played for all the semi-finalists. I

:16:26. > :16:32.played for all four teams. I had success with two. Unsuccessful with

:16:32. > :16:36.the other two! Both Aberdeen and Hibernian have struggled in the

:16:36. > :16:42.league. This is a great opportunity for either to reach a final and a

:16:42. > :16:52.European place. It will be a close game. I think Aberdeen might just

:16:52. > :16:57.

:16:57. > :17:01.Celtic verses Heart of Midlothian has the makings of a cracker.

:17:01. > :17:11.Celtic are champions and their opponents have been on a very

:17:11. > :17:18.

:17:18. > :17:22.strong run. I think Celtic might just edge it. - 2 - 1. For me, it

:17:22. > :17:28.will be Aberdeen against Celtic in the final on 19th May. But what

:17:28. > :17:38.colour of weapons will be on the trophy? Who knows. -- what colour

:17:38. > :17:41.

:17:41. > :17:46.Next week Paul will protect the lottery numbers. Neil Lennon is

:17:46. > :17:51.also looking to the future. He has reiterated his intention to sit

:17:51. > :17:56.down with the Celtic board at the end of the season. But before Handy

:17:56. > :18:02.is preparing for the Scottish Cup semi-final. The game has attracted

:18:02. > :18:07.a celebrity Scottish -- celebrity Celtic supporter. Westlife fans

:18:07. > :18:17.will not that Nicky Byrne now is the one with the blonde hear hear.

:18:17. > :18:18.

:18:18. > :18:24.I review my situation every season. I did so when I was a player, when

:18:24. > :18:28.I was a coach, and now a manager. It is just something you do. I have

:18:28. > :18:34.consistently done that for the last 10 or 12 years and I have

:18:34. > :18:38.consistently been here during that time. I do not see it changing.

:18:39. > :18:42.The President of the Scottish Rugby Union says that the game of sevens

:18:42. > :18:48.will flourish in the next few years and nowhere more so than its

:18:48. > :18:54.birthplace, Melrose. It is providing a welcome boost for the

:18:54. > :18:59.Borders economy. They are going the whole hog in the Borders. Rugby

:18:59. > :19:05.sevens will take over Melrose for the weekend. Young and old are

:19:05. > :19:13.welcome. 15,000 people will attend. Of course, we're talking about more

:19:13. > :19:19.than just a few games of rugby. This event is the biggest outdoor

:19:19. > :19:23.event in the Borders. It is worth about 2 million to the local

:19:23. > :19:30.economy. In these difficult economic times

:19:31. > :19:35.local businesses feel the benefits. Our accommodation is full. I

:19:35. > :19:40.suspect there will not be much accommodation within 15 or 20 miles

:19:40. > :19:44.of Melrose. Great for all licensed traders and shop owners and the

:19:45. > :19:51.town. Players come from across the world.

:19:51. > :19:55.This team from Singapore have eyes on the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

:19:55. > :20:01.The Commonwealth Games rugby sevens as a world class. You're talking

:20:01. > :20:06.about South Africa, England, Australia, England, Scotland. So it

:20:06. > :20:11.will not be a piece of cake but hopefully we can do well.

:20:11. > :20:15.Since been invented by a local butcher be game of rugby sevens has

:20:15. > :20:19.come a long way. So far that the world series event will be played

:20:19. > :20:25.in Glasgow next month. It will then be played at the Commonwealth Games

:20:26. > :20:30.and it will come an Olympic event in Brazil in 2016.

:20:30. > :20:34.The Americans, Chinese, Russians, they look at it as a medal

:20:34. > :20:42.opportunity. If they take a game seriously than we have real

:20:42. > :20:52.competition. There has even been a fresh row was

:20:52. > :20:53.

:20:53. > :21:03.applied to the pitch. -- fresh rose. Everybody will be open to win the

:21:03. > :21:14.

:21:14. > :21:19.Thank you very much. A busy weekend We have seen quite a mixture of

:21:19. > :21:25.whether this week. A fair amount of showers. That will continue into

:21:25. > :21:29.the weekend. Overnight, cold and frosty. The showers have been

:21:29. > :21:34.hanging around this afternoon and will gradually die out overnight.

:21:34. > :21:44.But we will see wintry showers across southern, Caithness,

:21:44. > :21:45.

:21:45. > :21:52.Aberdeenshire. Elsewhere, a dry, cold, frosty. Temperatures perhaps

:21:52. > :22:00.as low as-four in some shelter of sports. We will see the best of the

:22:00. > :22:10.Sun first thing in the morning. The afternoon is when we will see more

:22:10. > :22:10.

:22:10. > :22:15.scattered showers. Snort over higher ground in the north. -- snow.

:22:16. > :22:22.Temperatures around eight or nine Celsius in the south, colder

:22:22. > :22:29.further north. If you're planning on heading into the mountains it

:22:29. > :22:38.will be cold. Temperatures at-five at the summits. But there will be

:22:38. > :22:45.some debate and sunny spells. -- bright and sunny. Winds are not too

:22:45. > :22:55.bad. 25 mph in a northerly direction. The west of the country,

:22:55. > :23:03.if you're heading for the water's, for so four. -- force. To the east,

:23:03. > :23:09.forced five. A north-easterly direction. Moderate or rough seas.

:23:09. > :23:14.But good visibility. Showers will die out overnight but there will be

:23:14. > :23:21.widespread sharp frost. Enrich of high pressure will build across the

:23:21. > :23:27.country. Probably a better day out on Sunday. As we start the new week

:23:27. > :23:33.we will see at change with a raft of weather fronts pushing and from

:23:33. > :23:39.the Atlantic. Fairly late and broken on Monday. But at cloudy

:23:39. > :23:49.start to the week. Feeling cold also. Over the weekend, sunshine

:23:49. > :23:49.

:23:49. > :23:53.and showers, try to make the most Our top stories - a major police

:23:53. > :24:03.operation continues at a farm in Bearsden after the discovery of a

:24:03. > :24:05.

:24:05. > :24:08.David Cameron has called for an end to economic sanctions against Burma.
