:00:23. > :00:26.Tonight on Reporting Scotland: A double celebration. Heather

:00:26. > :00:31.Stanning from Lossiemouth takes a rowing gold in the Women's Pair

:00:31. > :00:41.Final with her partner Helen Glover. Their golds are Team GB's first at

:00:41. > :00:44.

:00:44. > :00:47.the London Olympics. And we're hoping for more medal success

:00:47. > :00:49.tonight. We'll be live from the Olympic Park with the latest. Also

:00:49. > :00:53.tonight: Spreading their massive rollover. Scotland's Euromillions

:00:53. > :00:55.winners buy a prosthetic limb for a 13-year-old boy who lost his leg to

:00:55. > :01:04.cancer. He caught their attention stumbling as he carried the Olympic

:01:04. > :01:07.flame. It will enable me to walk again and do anything I want,

:01:07. > :01:17.really. And we're live at Celtic Park ahead

:01:17. > :01:18.

:01:19. > :01:23.of their Champions League qualifier. It is Celtic Park -- Celtic against

:01:23. > :01:26.HJK Helsinki. At last, gold medals for Team GB

:01:26. > :01:29.and the first came courtesy of a Scots rower. Heather Stanning, who

:01:29. > :01:34.was brought up in Lossiemouth, won the Women's Pair Final with her

:01:34. > :01:41.partner Helen Glover. Rhona McLeod is at the Olympic Park for us

:01:41. > :01:47.tonight. Delight and relief all round, Rhona. Yes, it certainly

:01:47. > :01:51.felt like it was a long time coming. How fantastic that there was a Scot

:01:51. > :01:55.in the boat when Team GB won their first gold medal. Let me tell you

:01:55. > :02:02.about this. It wasn't just the victory, it was the manner of the

:02:02. > :02:06.victory. This pair dominated from start to finish. It is a great

:02:06. > :02:11.ending for them. Two years ago, they were the spares but Team GB

:02:11. > :02:16.rowing, they were almost surplus to requirement. Then someone decided

:02:16. > :02:23.to put them in a boat and see how they would do. It was the perfect

:02:23. > :02:30.match. Today, they made history. Our sports correspondent reports

:02:30. > :02:35.from Eton Dorney. The moment we have all been waiting for. The

:02:35. > :02:42.national anthem and a British gold medal with a Scott Bradley on the

:02:42. > :02:47.podium. 1,200 metres to glory. outcome was never in doubt, right

:02:47. > :02:53.from the start. This was a clinical demonstration of power, skill and

:02:53. > :03:00.determination to win. Great Britain into the record books. History in

:03:00. > :03:04.the making here. Heather Stanning, not just Scotland and Britain's

:03:04. > :03:13.first gold medal at these schemes but along with Helen Glover, she

:03:13. > :03:18.has become the first British female role to win Olympic gold. Olympic

:03:18. > :03:24.champion, how does that feel? sounds a bit odd. I suppose it will

:03:24. > :03:30.hit me in a few hours' time. At the moment, everything seems surreal, a

:03:30. > :03:37.dream. I am overwhelmed by it. Exhaustion for Heather Stanning and

:03:37. > :03:46.delight for those closest to her. I'm told she was at school in

:03:46. > :03:54.Lossiemouth. I think she regards Lossiemouth as her home. All our

:03:54. > :04:00.lives, we have had holidays in Scotland. All the time we were

:04:00. > :04:06.burgled, that was one of our anchor points. Are you happy that

:04:06. > :04:11.Lossiemouth is claiming an Olympic gold medallist? Absolutely. And we

:04:11. > :04:19.look forward to seeing the results when we get home. What makes

:04:19. > :04:25.Heather Stanning such a tan? sheer guts and determination.

:04:25. > :04:31.Nothing is too big, too strong. She is going to give everything on it

:04:31. > :04:36.and put everything on the line. I suppose it is being in the forces,

:04:36. > :04:41.that is what we want from our forces in some ways. With a gold

:04:41. > :04:49.medal hanging around her neck, she hopes she has inspired a Scottish

:04:49. > :04:55.and UK Gold Rush. A Scottish gold rush, we don't want to tempt fate

:04:55. > :05:02.but that could be a relative. Tonight at 7:30pm, in the Pooh, we

:05:02. > :05:12.have Michael Jamieson in the 200 metres breast stroke. -- in the

:05:12. > :05:15.

:05:15. > :05:25.He broke the British record. He is very much on form. He is relaxed,

:05:25. > :05:28.

:05:28. > :05:34.In one day, Michael Jamieson Suan the race of his life. Very good

:05:34. > :05:41.swim from Jamieson. That is a new swim from Jamieson. That is a new

:05:41. > :05:46.British record. Not just once but twice. Another massive British

:05:46. > :05:52.record. That makes him the fastest qualifier for tonight's race final.

:05:52. > :05:57.It is amazing. Every time I come out here, I get these bumps. It is

:05:57. > :06:00.really something special. I am really something special. I am

:06:00. > :06:06.really happy with the time. I am really excited. Jamieson first

:06:06. > :06:16.started making waves at his cool as a youngster. The locals are already

:06:16. > :06:16.

:06:16. > :06:21.proud. He has done great. He put on a fantastic show. It is fantastic.

:06:21. > :06:30.It is great for the kids to see he has come from an area and has used

:06:30. > :06:36.the poor he has used. What do you think about it? Awesome. 1976 is

:06:36. > :06:44.the last time a Scot won gold in the swimming pool. Jensen has

:06:44. > :06:49.changed that record. -- Jamieson. His chances are strong. He is a

:06:49. > :06:55.favourite. He is on form so far. He should get the gold. But you never

:06:55. > :07:02.know who is hiding here and there. Sir, It seems yet another lifetime

:07:02. > :07:08.best is required if Jamieson is to get a gold medal. In the last few

:07:08. > :07:16.minutes, we have had more Scottish success. Andy Murray won his match

:07:16. > :07:21.against Marcus back batters. You can see the absolute delight in his

:07:21. > :07:26.face. Very relieved to still be in the Olympic Games. He is determined

:07:26. > :07:32.to go all the way this year. I can tell you that in the semi-finals,

:07:32. > :07:35.he will play a player from Spain. I will be later in the programme with

:07:36. > :07:38.the sport. And in celebration of Heather

:07:38. > :07:41.Stanning and Helen Glover's gold winning performance, the Royal Mail

:07:41. > :07:43.has produced a stamp. It will be available from tomorrow and

:07:43. > :07:45.features the pair smiling and waving to supporters following

:07:45. > :07:50.their historic win. You're watching Reporting Scotland

:07:50. > :07:53.from the BBC. Still to come on the programme: Nicola Benedetti helps

:07:53. > :07:56.the National Youth Orchestra prepare for the Proms.

:07:56. > :08:04.And after being told he'd never walk again, this soldier is to

:08:04. > :08:07.march the length and breadth of the country for charity.

:08:07. > :08:10.In sport: Celtic's Champions League campaign starts tonight here at

:08:10. > :08:14.Celtic Park. Can they put a smile back on the face of Scottish

:08:14. > :08:24.football? More on that later. And we'll also be back live at the

:08:24. > :08:25.

:08:25. > :08:29.Three men have been killed in a car crash in Cumbernauld. It happened

:08:29. > :08:32.at lunchtime on the A8011. Our correspondent Eleanor Bradford is

:08:32. > :08:42.close to the scene of the crash. What do we know about what

:08:42. > :08:43.

:08:43. > :08:47.happened? You might be able to make out behind me the wreckage of the

:08:47. > :08:54.vehicles involved in this accident being removed from what is the end

:08:54. > :08:58.of a very nasty bend on this road. Now, a silver Mercedes being driven

:08:59. > :09:05.by a 30-year-old man was travelling northbound towards us when it

:09:05. > :09:11.crossed the central reservation and hit a Ford Focus, a dark coloured

:09:11. > :09:17.Ford Focus carrying a 34-year-old Andy 46-year-old men. All three men

:09:17. > :09:20.were killed. Another 71-year-old man driving and other car involved

:09:20. > :09:25.in the incident was airlifted to hospital and he has since been

:09:25. > :09:30.released. There were passing vehicles at the time and though

:09:30. > :09:36.those people did stop to help the police, police are still appealing

:09:37. > :09:41.for witnesses. Unfortunately, three members of the public died today.

:09:41. > :09:51.Anyone who is using this as a dual carriageway today, we would like

:09:51. > :09:55.

:09:55. > :10:00.them to contact us. When we are right this afternoon, the road was

:10:00. > :10:05.wet. It has been a pretty miserable day here. This is a notorious bend

:10:05. > :10:10.and recently, the speed limit has been reduced to 50mph on this end

:10:10. > :10:14.because of previous accidents. But police cannot tell whether speed or

:10:15. > :10:17.road conditions were a factor in this terrible accident.

:10:18. > :10:20.Retail sales fell in the second quarter of this year, according to

:10:20. > :10:24.Scottish government figures. During April to June, both volume and

:10:24. > :10:28.value of sales were down, by less than 1%, though the data shows both

:10:28. > :10:33.measures rose over the past year. That puts Scottish spring sales in

:10:34. > :10:36.a worse position than Britain as a whole for that period.

:10:36. > :10:38.The family of a Scottish holidaymaker, who is missing

:10:38. > :10:42.presumed dead following a white water rafting accident on a

:10:42. > :10:46.Canadian river, have described the incident as a tragedy. Andrew

:10:46. > :10:49.Barrie, who was 50 and from Balloch in Dunbartonshire, was one of three

:10:49. > :10:54.people who got into difficulties last weekend on the Kettle River in

:10:54. > :11:04.British Columbia. He was on holiday at the time with his wife Carol and

:11:04. > :11:10.

:11:10. > :11:16.16-year-old son Andrew. It has emerged they have been two near-

:11:16. > :11:23.misses in Scottish air space today. A tornado and another plane came

:11:23. > :11:26.close to colliding. And there was another incident. Both exercises

:11:26. > :11:29.happened in April. A 13-year-old boy who lost his leg

:11:29. > :11:32.to cancer has spoken of his delight after the Scottish lottery winners

:11:32. > :11:35.Colin and Chris Weir said they would buy him a new prosthetic limb.

:11:36. > :11:39.Kieran Maxwell from county Durham was diagnosed with a rare and

:11:39. > :11:42.aggressive form of the disease last year. But in June, he became one of

:11:42. > :11:52.our most popular Olympic torchbearers. Our reporter Stuart

:11:52. > :11:57.

:11:57. > :12:03.Whincup went to meet him at his Inspiring and courageous. His

:12:03. > :12:07.family seat he is there he wrote. He took himself up after it falling

:12:07. > :12:11.while holding the Olympic torch last month. Now the teenagers is

:12:11. > :12:15.that his life has been changed because he is getting a new

:12:15. > :12:20.pathetic loner. I will be able to walk again and I will be able to do

:12:20. > :12:26.anything I want, really. I will not be stuck in her wheelchair. It is

:12:26. > :12:31.much lighter, I can run, jump and everything apart from Sprint. It is

:12:31. > :12:37.brilliant. The other one I have upstairs I could only walk with.

:12:37. > :12:43.That is where needed a better one. Two years ago he was diagnosed with

:12:43. > :12:51.an earlier form of cancer. Despite undergoing chemotherapy he he had

:12:51. > :12:55.his leg amputated. His family have been fund-raising for a replacement

:12:55. > :13:01.limb but Colin and Chris Weir who won 160 million said they would

:13:01. > :13:05.get them on and he no longer has to wait. I keep on waiting to see if

:13:05. > :13:15.someone is going to pensioners and week as up. Things like this don't

:13:15. > :13:16.

:13:16. > :13:21.happen to us. We do not get good luck at all. I do. The family say

:13:21. > :13:26.they are still coming to terms with the lead changing news. It has been

:13:26. > :13:35.brilliant. I can do anything. now hoping that his new line will

:13:35. > :13:40.be fitted within the next six weeks. One road in Argyll and Bute has

:13:40. > :13:46.been closed overnight following an landslip following Abbey period of

:13:46. > :13:53.heavy rain. It adds up to 50 miles for some journeys with the changes

:13:53. > :13:58.that you will have to make. In 2007, 2009 and 20 in a living and earlier

:13:58. > :14:03.this year there had been close to his ear. Now look across the rest

:14:03. > :14:08.of the country. A fatal accident inquiry will be

:14:08. > :14:13.held into the death of a teenage girl. 17-year-old Natasha Paton was

:14:13. > :14:19.killed when a coach carrying pupils and staff from Lanark Grammar

:14:19. > :14:23.School crashed here in March 2010. Edinburgh council is proposing an

:14:23. > :14:28.radical revamp of its housing repairs system. It follows

:14:28. > :14:33.investigations into how the process was previously run. Four council

:14:33. > :14:37.staff were so dismissed and others suspended over at allegations of

:14:37. > :14:41.bribery. They are proposing other options because it is going to

:14:41. > :14:46.consultation. There are a number of options on the table and we want

:14:46. > :14:49.the back from interested parties or and there property owners. We want

:14:49. > :14:52.a well-informed decision when we move forward to implementing

:14:52. > :14:57.services. That will be some time next year.

:14:57. > :15:02.An emergency was declared after a suspected fire aboard and North Sea

:15:02. > :15:06.oil platform with more than 200 people on board. Shetland

:15:06. > :15:12.coastguard dispatched towards the platform which was 142 miles north

:15:12. > :15:16.of Aberdeen. No fire was found and the operation was called off.

:15:16. > :15:21.A large-scale study suggests that even mild mental health problems

:15:21. > :15:24.has a significant impact on life- expectancy. Researchers from

:15:24. > :15:28.University of Edinburgh and University College London found

:15:28. > :15:32.that those with low-level anxiety, do procession or stress seemed to

:15:32. > :15:37.have a higher risk of death from diseases like cardiovascular

:15:38. > :15:42.disease. 13 beds have been made for at this

:15:42. > :15:46.site of Aberdeen's old council headquarters. It could be replaced

:15:46. > :15:50.by at a hotel, or or retail developments.

:15:50. > :15:54.A new law designed to make it harder for housing associations and

:15:54. > :15:57.councils to evict tenants comes into effect from today. From now on,

:15:57. > :16:01.tenants should be offered at claimant plant before being forced

:16:01. > :16:05.from their homes. There are more stories from Yuri

:16:05. > :16:14.area and all the latest news 24 hours a day on the BBC Scotland

:16:14. > :16:19.One year ago the future of Scotland's National Youth Orchestra

:16:19. > :16:24.was put in doubt after a huge cut in funding. But tonight the young

:16:24. > :16:27.musicians take to the stage with renewed confidence. They have two

:16:27. > :16:31.performances north of the border before they appear at the BBC Proms

:16:31. > :16:37.this weekend. They have been joined by one of Scotland's leading

:16:37. > :16:42.musicians. By Leonard Birchall sort Nicola

:16:42. > :16:47.Benedetti onstage with Scotland's National Youth Orchestra. This is

:16:47. > :16:54.the final rehearsal ahead of tonight so performance at Perth

:16:54. > :16:57.concert-hall. -- tonight's. But it was in doubt with its future when

:16:57. > :17:01.Creative Scotland slashed its funding. 12 months on they are

:17:01. > :17:05.looking to the future with optimism. This will be a difficult road but

:17:05. > :17:09.we're finding N Rhodes to finding other alternative ways have been

:17:09. > :17:16.funded and we're certainly not going to let it damage any of our

:17:16. > :17:19.activities that we are doing. are at eight orchestras in all

:17:19. > :17:24.covering classical and jazz and offering the sort of experience our

:17:24. > :17:27.youngsters between the ages of eight and 25. Earlier this year at

:17:27. > :17:33.Nicola Benedetti who is a former musician of the year at -- Young

:17:33. > :17:38.musician of the year, criticised cuts to music teaching in schools.

:17:38. > :17:40.My feeling in Scotland is a very positive one. I then there are

:17:40. > :17:44.wonderful individuals and organisations that are really

:17:44. > :17:50.coming together and trying to work together and create a community of

:17:50. > :17:54.people that prioritise culture in Scotland and music in Scotland.

:17:54. > :17:58.the young orchestra members relish the opportunity to play alongside

:17:58. > :18:03.one of our top musicians. It is really special for us to have these

:18:03. > :18:08.memories and these experiences. It been shown as a player. Yes,

:18:08. > :18:11.exactly. I look back on it when I am much older and hopefully playing

:18:11. > :18:16.professionally to be able to say that was here and I had that

:18:16. > :18:20.opportunity with such a sensational and inspiring player like Nicola

:18:20. > :18:26.Benedetti. This orchestra takes the stage of the Albert Hall for the

:18:26. > :18:34.BBC Proms. It is a future showcase what the cream of Scotland's

:18:34. > :18:39.musical talents. We are at Celtic Park tonight with

:18:39. > :18:45.the sports news bolster up does because I have my Bradley Wiggins

:18:45. > :18:50.sideburns on does not mean that the sport is all about Olympics tonight.

:18:50. > :18:55.We have Celtic kicking of their campaigns week campaign. That will

:18:56. > :19:04.be against the HJK Helsinki of Finland. There's a sense of tension

:19:04. > :19:07.and so they are excited. As is the former at Celtic assistant manager.

:19:08. > :19:11.Neil Lennon it says it is up to Celtic to put a smile on the face

:19:11. > :19:17.of Scottish football. Is it going to be a case of big grins around

:19:18. > :19:20.here? Hopefully. It will be a tough match as they are up to took

:19:20. > :19:24.matched speed at the moment and Celtic have not played any

:19:24. > :19:28.competitive game is only friendly matches. We have not been scoring a

:19:28. > :19:35.lot of goals. But the players know how important it is to get into the

:19:35. > :19:43.Champions League. Celtic have played 19 Games already. --

:19:43. > :19:47.Helsinki. Celtic are we bit rusty. He that you will get great backing

:19:47. > :19:51.and Neil Lennon has been chopping and changing the system. Helsinki

:19:51. > :19:54.are all settled and there have we through their season. They will

:19:54. > :20:01.know what they're about but Celtic players know what is at stake. It

:20:01. > :20:06.is so much for them to get into the Champions League. You and I know

:20:06. > :20:12.that a seagull is about to drop on at my script is that a prediction?

:20:12. > :20:17.At think it is an omen. It just missed you. I think it would be a

:20:17. > :20:22.comfortable two to nothing victory tonight. And then issue away from

:20:22. > :20:32.home would make him quite comfortable. That is a tip took

:20:32. > :20:33.

:20:33. > :20:38.Celtic but you can find out if it Our other it Champions League

:20:38. > :20:41.hopefuls, mother well, it is not looking too hopeful for them. They

:20:42. > :20:48.lost to Panathanikos last night at fir Park. But as to what their

:20:48. > :20:53.manager makes of their chances. will never be negative but

:20:53. > :20:58.realistically it it was too big and ask to come back from that. But we

:20:58. > :21:02.have to look forward to going up on Saturday as certain of the SPL. And

:21:02. > :21:06.it would be done and the bombs that that will be more than happy.

:21:06. > :21:10.coin an old Scottish phrase, it looks as though the ball is on

:21:10. > :21:14.their sleeves for Motherwell and the Champions League. He yes, it

:21:15. > :21:17.will be hard for them, be played well last night but not good enough.

:21:17. > :21:23.There it needing to show a good performance away from home and

:21:23. > :21:27.going into the EU League. That you for joining us. If you're a Celtic

:21:27. > :21:30.fan and are coming along to Celtic Park but you still want to see

:21:30. > :21:34.Michael Jamieson then do not despair because you can see that on

:21:34. > :21:40.the big screens here. Michael Jamieson by all accounts is a

:21:40. > :21:45.Celtic fan. An owner Olympics the border has no such worries. She is

:21:45. > :21:49.going to be there. A sense of anticipation down in London for a

:21:49. > :21:52.worm and Michael Jamieson? Absolutely. And Michael Jamieson is

:21:52. > :21:57.thrilled that his race is going to be shown on the big screens there

:21:57. > :22:02.at Celtic Park. Michael Jamieson has qualified as the fastest person

:22:02. > :22:07.into the final in the 200 metres breaststroke. As we were saying

:22:07. > :22:10.earlier, he comes here in the form of his life. He broke the British

:22:11. > :22:14.record to get into the final. He has gone down to Bath University

:22:14. > :22:19.and has been part of a very successful swimming programme there.

:22:19. > :22:25.He is well prepared. That is all the excitement tonight in the pool.

:22:25. > :22:32.Can Scotland when another gold medal tonight? I have some other TG

:22:32. > :22:38.been using for you. -- Team GB. The women that is in the steeplechase
