:00:15. > :00:17.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight on your national news:
:00:17. > :00:27.After a record breaking Olympics for Scottish athletes, attention
:00:27. > :00:29.
:00:29. > :00:33.now turns to the Glasgow Commonwealth games.
:00:33. > :00:36.Organisers of 2014 have been in London to try to bring some Olympic
:00:37. > :00:39.glory to Glasgow. Also in the programme - the jury at
:00:39. > :00:43.the Jenny Methven murder trial sees an apparent suicide note written by
:00:43. > :00:53.the accused after her death. And can the success of the Olympics
:00:53. > :00:58.inspire older people to stay active. We have got an exercise bike and a
:00:58. > :01:01.trampoline. What do people say when they see you on the trampoline?
:01:01. > :01:04.They think it is hysterical. It's transfixed much of the nation
:01:04. > :01:10.for the last fortnight but the Olympics has finally drawn to a
:01:10. > :01:15.close. The curtain has come down on the 2012 London Games, the most
:01:15. > :01:20.successful ever for Scottish athletes. What will that success
:01:20. > :01:22.mean for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games? In a moment we'll be live at
:01:22. > :01:26.the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome in Glasgow where Laura Bicker looks
:01:26. > :01:28.ahead to what it will mean for the Commonwealth Games in 2014. But
:01:28. > :01:34.first our Olympics correspondent Kheredine Idessane looks back on
:01:34. > :01:40.the most memorable moments for Team GB's Scottish competitors. A strong
:01:40. > :01:49.Scottish theme ran through these Games right from the start, from
:01:49. > :01:59.pop star Emily Sunday at the opening ceremony, to Sir Chris Hoy
:01:59. > :02:03.
:02:03. > :02:13.leading in Team GB. Daniel Purvis' team bronze was Scotland's first
:02:13. > :02:20.
:02:20. > :02:26.ever gymnastics medal. There were more successes, in the rowing.
:02:26. > :02:35.Heather Stanning 1 Team GB's first rowing medal of the Games before
:02:35. > :02:39.Katherine Grainger upgraded. Highfield this medal of four of
:02:39. > :02:47.them is a people's medal because so many people have been behind me.
:02:47. > :02:54.Spectacular excess in the two-man canoe slalom - gold for Tim Baillie
:02:54. > :03:00.and sulphur for David Florence. In the pool, a silver medal. I am in
:03:00. > :03:04.the sport to win major medals. incredible home support in London
:03:04. > :03:12.lifted Team GB to new Olympic heights, and nowhere was that more
:03:12. > :03:22.evident than hear it in the Velodrome where Scotland's greatest
:03:22. > :03:22.
:03:22. > :03:31.Olympian rode his bike into history. That is his sixth gold medal!
:03:31. > :03:35.is a headline for you - Andy Murray, Wimbledon winner. A gold medal in
:03:35. > :03:45.the singles and mixed doubles silver medal. The gold-medal
:03:45. > :03:50.standard was also met by Scott Brash in the team event, and a
:03:50. > :03:55.silver medal in the sailing. The hockey team took a bronze medal, by
:03:55. > :04:00.which time it was already Scottish athletes' best-ever Olympics. A
:04:00. > :04:04.small nation can deliver, can achieve success on the world stage
:04:04. > :04:09.and if we believe in ourselves this is something we can take forward
:04:09. > :04:14.for the Commonwealth Games. As the curtain comes down on London 2012,
:04:14. > :04:19.Scotland's athletes leave the Olympic stage as record-breakers,
:04:19. > :04:24.winning seven gold medals, four silver medals, and two bronze
:04:24. > :04:31.medals. The challenge now is to maintain the momentum as Glasgow
:04:31. > :04:35.prepares to host the Commonwealth Games in two years.
:04:35. > :04:40.Well Laura Bicker is at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome in the east end
:04:40. > :04:49.of Glasgow for us this evening. How can the 2014 Games organisers make
:04:49. > :04:53.sure that momentum is maintained? The Bar has been set pretty high.
:04:53. > :04:57.Organisers, speaking to them, seem determined they can keep the
:04:57. > :05:01.momentum into 2014 but there is a lot of work to be done at the
:05:01. > :05:07.Velodrome and other venues throughout Glasgow. There is even a
:05:07. > :05:11.need for more hotels to be built. Such is the determination to keep
:05:11. > :05:16.that magic that we are not even allowed in the Velodrome tonight.
:05:16. > :05:20.They want to leave that until the big reveal later in the year, but
:05:20. > :05:26.organisers have been down in London watching very carefully and seeing
:05:26. > :05:36.what lessons can be learned. the Scots who just missed out on a
:05:36. > :05:38.
:05:38. > :05:43.gold medal and those who feel they can do better.... There is a second
:05:43. > :05:48.chance. Olympians will now be looking towards 2014, where it is
:05:48. > :05:52.hoped one of our greatest Scots will compete. Officials have been
:05:52. > :05:58.working behind the scenes to learn lessons from the Olympics on
:05:58. > :06:01.ticketing and security, but also on engaging an audience. One of the
:06:01. > :06:07.best lessons is not to underestimate people's enthusiasm
:06:07. > :06:12.and interest and devotion to the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It will be
:06:12. > :06:18.a life-changing experience for Glasgow and Scotland. This was the
:06:18. > :06:21.level of enthusiasm that followed the torch relay around Scotland. It
:06:21. > :06:26.proves how uninspired and spellbound a nation can become, but
:06:26. > :06:31.could Scotland be missing out on the biggest Olympic legacy -
:06:31. > :06:37.inspiring a new generation? After this unprecedented Olympic success,
:06:37. > :06:41.the UK government is poised to introduce a new competitive sports
:06:41. > :06:49.physical education programme in primary school. Could Scotland
:06:49. > :06:56.follow suit? A have to be careful not to do this to the disadvantage
:06:56. > :07:00.of other students. When you talk to athletes, so many of them tried go
:07:00. > :07:05.different sports before they found the one for them. Preparations for
:07:05. > :07:10.the next festival of sport are well under way.
:07:10. > :07:17.Organisers have come away from London 2012 with three main lessons
:07:17. > :07:22.- ticketing, we do not want empty seats. Secondly, security.
:07:22. > :07:27.Hopefully the army will not need to step in. Thirdly, when things went
:07:27. > :07:32.wrong in London, they need to step in quickly to put them right and
:07:32. > :07:37.they hope if anything does go wrong they will have learnt from 2012 and
:07:37. > :07:41.they can put things right in 2014. Even if they manage to capture a
:07:41. > :07:45.tiny essence of what we have seen over the last few weeks, this place
:07:45. > :07:49.could be a special place to be in two years.
:07:49. > :07:51.A jury at the trial of a man accused of murdering 80 year old
:07:51. > :07:55.Jenny Methven at her home in Perthshire has been shown an
:07:55. > :07:58.apparent suicide note he wrote a month after her death. In the note
:07:58. > :08:01.William Kean writes of his love for his family but also describes how
:08:01. > :08:10.he has been feeling low and depressed for two or three months.
:08:10. > :08:15.Aileen Clarke reports. The first witness this morning was Kathleen
:08:15. > :08:21.Macpherson. She told the court she is the neighbour of an elderly man
:08:21. > :08:26.whom the accused William Kean did some work for. On 19th March, that
:08:26. > :08:30.neighbour telephoned her and said he was concerned about the note
:08:30. > :08:35.William Kean left in the greenhouse. She was so concerned she called the
:08:35. > :08:45.police. Another neighbour found a knife covered in blood nearby. In
:08:45. > :09:06.
:09:06. > :09:11.Dr Amy Bingham assessed William Kean when he was admitted to a
:09:11. > :09:16.psychiatric hospital in Perth. She said he had told her he had been
:09:16. > :09:22.feeling low for several months. This afternoon constable Stuart
:09:23. > :09:27.Ramsay took the jury through CCTV which he said placed the car
:09:27. > :09:32.William Kean was using at the time near Jenny Methven's cottage on the
:09:32. > :09:38.day she died. William Kean denies murdering Jenny Methven and he has
:09:38. > :09:41.lodged a special defence, blaming her son David.
:09:41. > :09:43.You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the
:09:43. > :09:48.programme: Ministers from around the world gather in festival-
:09:48. > :09:51.focussed Edinburgh for the first international cultural summit. And
:09:51. > :09:57.can our athletes' medal haul inspire our older people to stay
:09:57. > :10:00.active? In sport, a place for Black in the
:10:00. > :10:03.Scotland squad despite now plying his trade in the third division.
:10:03. > :10:10.And the pioneers of the women's game who blazed the trail allowing
:10:10. > :10:13.success for today's players. The former Prime Minister Gordon
:10:13. > :10:18.Brown has used Sir Chris Hoy's success at the Olympics to support
:10:18. > :10:21.his argument that Scotland is better off as part of the union.
:10:21. > :10:29.He's been giving the Donald Dewar Lecture memorial lecture at the
:10:29. > :10:35.Edinburgh book festival. Perhaps that is one of the lessons I take
:10:35. > :10:40.from the Olympics and Chris Hoy has made the point for me. When we
:10:40. > :10:44.share resources for the common good, it is often the case that the
:10:44. > :10:50.benefit is far greater than would have occurred if we had just added
:10:50. > :10:56.up the parts. Glen Campbell is in Edinburgh for us tonight. What else
:10:56. > :11:01.did he say? He lectured on British values as prime minister, today he
:11:01. > :11:07.was lecturing on Scottish values. Distinctive values of community and
:11:07. > :11:11.justice, which in his view have helped to build the United Kingdom
:11:11. > :11:18.and underpin the principle that we share resources across the UK.
:11:18. > :11:22.Without that he suggested Scottish taxes what have to go up, otherwise
:11:22. > :11:27.spending would need to be cut, but there would be a race to the bottom
:11:27. > :11:32.across these islands in wages, in social security benefits and other
:11:32. > :11:37.areas as well. As you have heard, suggesting that even the Olympic
:11:37. > :11:41.performance would not be as good. That is heavily disputed by
:11:41. > :11:46.nationalists. An independent Scotland would do fantastically
:11:46. > :11:51.well. Sports stars like Andy Murray and Chris Hoy would be extremely
:11:51. > :11:57.successful. Andy Murray affected his skills in Spain alongside
:11:57. > :12:02.Rafael Nadal, and any sports person would go to any country they could
:12:02. > :12:05.to perfect their skills. On another matter tonight, news about an
:12:05. > :12:10.inter-governmental arrangement about the independence referendum
:12:10. > :12:16.perhaps? The UK and Scottish government have been talking about
:12:17. > :12:20.the referendum today. The UK government indicating that they are
:12:20. > :12:25.nearer to agreeing the timetable for reaching an agreement on what
:12:25. > :12:30.referendum will have, what form it will take, and when it will be held.
:12:30. > :12:38.The Scottish government don't seem quite as convinced that as much
:12:38. > :12:43.progress has been made. They aim to hold the vote in 2014. It will be a
:12:43. > :12:48.long campaign, and it is clear tonight that Gordon Brown will be
:12:48. > :12:52.making another speech in 10 days offering a critique of saw the
:12:52. > :12:57.alternatives being offered to independence. He is very clear he

:13:02. > :13:06.died in hospital after contracting the bacterial infection, e coli

:13:08. > :13:13.outbreak and there was no particular risk to the general

:15:24. > :15:26.you've seen at the Olympics, but feel you're too old to take up
:15:26. > :15:29.competitive sport? A conference in Glasgow this week is being told
:15:29. > :15:33.that it's never too late. The organisers say that people aged 70
:15:33. > :15:37.and over should, instead of slowing down, make more of an effort to
:15:37. > :15:47.keep fit. Our health correspondent Eleanor Bradford has been finding

:15:53. > :16:01.out more. This is the world over 80s table tennis championships. It
:16:01. > :16:11.is the subject of a new film. Then you're 70s, 80s and even 90s and
:16:11. > :16:11.
:16:11. > :16:17.One hundreds, it is important to keep fit. So why do so many over
:16:17. > :16:21.70s feel like this? I have a bad hip so I am not sure that I want to
:16:21. > :16:27.take part in physical activity. There comes a time when you just
:16:27. > :16:34.cannot take part in these things. The recommended exercise for over
:16:34. > :16:39.70s is 30 minutes per day but research suggests that only 7% of
:16:39. > :16:47.elderly people actually get that. A conference in Glasgow this week
:16:47. > :16:51.wants to change attitudes. When you are younger you have extra strength
:16:51. > :16:57.and capacity so can get away with being a little bit unfit but when
:16:57. > :17:06.you get to 60 you use as much as you can of your fitness, you
:17:06. > :17:15.probably get problems walking at six or seven mph, that is not
:17:16. > :17:21.illness it is just a UN fitness. This man took up rowing at the age
:17:21. > :17:31.of 78. He has come from his home in Switzerland to explain how to get

:18:06. > :18:08.Ministers from 30 countries have been gathering in Edinburgh for the

:18:13. > :18:22.from developing countries like Malawi, Bangladesh and Tanzania.
:18:22. > :18:26.Our arts correspondent Pauline McLean reports. A traditional

:18:30. > :18:36.Delegates from 30 nations are gathered here for the UK's first
:18:36. > :18:41.cultural summit. Politicians and ministers get together from around
:18:41. > :18:46.the world, why not culture. There is a strong sense in which culture
:18:46. > :18:54.is moving up the political agenda so we thought now was the right
:18:54. > :19:04.time. In Edinburgh, in the midst of festival season it seemed the
:19:04. > :19:11.
:19:11. > :19:20.obvious occasion. These Irish artists were on display. The Irish

:19:26. > :19:31.thought it was important to get together here in the UK and across
:19:31. > :19:38.Europe. Edinburgh's many festivals are worth millions to the local
:19:38. > :19:41.economy and even more to the international profile. If we are
:19:41. > :19:45.going to have dialogues at difficult times between nations,
:19:45. > :19:52.culture is a very good way of building Trust and we hope that
:19:52. > :20:01.happens at this summit. To Moro there will be discussions and
:20:01. > :20:09.debate about funding, how to raise it and maintain it in tough times.
:20:09. > :20:13.To sport now, Dougie, and something called football? Or culture as we
:20:13. > :20:16.call it in sport! The Scotland assistant manager Peter Houston has
:20:16. > :20:19.insisted no player will be overlooked for the national squad,

:20:46. > :20:46.
:20:46. > :20:54.easy transition said the manager last week. But the door is closed
:20:54. > :20:59.to No 1. The door is always open to any player, whatever division the

:21:34. > :21:38.People from lower divisions have got a chance to play at an
:21:38. > :21:45.international level. We have some tough decisions to making the next
:21:45. > :21:52.month. A good start is absolutely crucial if Scotland are to get back
:21:52. > :22:00.to a major finals for the first time in 16 years. For now the
:22:00. > :22:10.challenge is to beat Australia and they go into the qualifying
:22:10. > :22:12.
:22:12. > :22:15.campaign with the hope of a good result. In the last few minutes,
:22:15. > :22:18.Glasgow City football club beat Noroc Nimoreni of Moldova to go top
:22:18. > :22:20.of group 8 in the UEFA Women's Champions League. City were
:22:20. > :22:23.Scotland's most successful team in Europe last season reaching the
:22:23. > :22:30.last 16 of the competition. But achievement in the women's game is
:22:30. > :22:37.not something that's happened overnight, as David Currie explains.
:22:37. > :22:43.This is the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park. And new
:22:43. > :22:53.exhibition shows that the woman's game has an equally long, if no
:22:53. > :23:00.
:23:00. > :23:06.less well known, St. -- history. The first game was as Scotland
:23:06. > :23:13.versus England match. In the early 20th century when suffragettes were
:23:13. > :23:17.marching for equal rights the popularity of women's football was
:23:17. > :23:25.growing. Even towards the end of the 20th century it was not easy
:23:25. > :23:29.for women to play the game They laughed. I had to play in the boys'
:23:29. > :23:39.club saw I had to get a short back and sides and the local barbers to

:23:53. > :23:58.caught scarlet fever but if you want to find out how the story ends
:23:58. > :24:01.you might have to visit the exhibition. As we heard earlier in
:24:01. > :24:04.the programme, it has been the most successful Olympic games ever for
:24:04. > :24:06.Scotland's Athletes. But for one, it ended in bitter disappointment.
:24:06. > :24:09.Modern pentathlete, Mhari Spence, arrived in London as a firm

:24:12. > :24:21.after knocking down four fences and incurring time penalties during the
:24:22. > :24:27.show jumping phase. I have had a really good year. The last two
:24:27. > :24:35.years actually have been really great. This is what I wanted. Yeah.
:24:35. > :24:38.It is hard. Yes, it is obviously quite emotional. And tomorrow night
:24:38. > :24:40.Rhona McLeod and John Beattie are presenting a special Sport Nation
:24:40. > :24:48.with highlights from the Olympics reflecting the record medal total
:24:48. > :24:54.achieved by Scottish athletes. And that is all the sport for this
:24:54. > :25:02.evening. I am going to miss it. The Olympics are over and so it seems
:25:02. > :25:09.this summer. Yes, London 2012 might be over but we are back to talking
:25:09. > :25:13.about summer 2012 and that might be over. We swap high pressure for a
:25:13. > :25:23.low pressure. That will bring in rain and at times strengthening
