:00:24. > :00:29.Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Tonight: history is made at the US

:00:29. > :00:33.Open. Grand-slam glory for Andy Murray as he finally gets his first

:00:33. > :00:40.major at the US Open. Back home in Dunblane, the locals stay up into

:00:40. > :00:46.the wee small hours to cheer on their local hero. They have

:00:46. > :00:49.supported me through tough moments. Every time I have gone back they

:00:49. > :00:54.are right behind me and I am glad I have given them something to shout

:00:54. > :00:56.about tonight. We'll have full coverage from New York and on those

:00:56. > :00:59.supporting Murray back home. Also tonight. Calls for more holidays

:00:59. > :01:02.for teachers as an official report says ours have the 5th highest

:01:02. > :01:12.workload. And can our national football team find some winning

:01:12. > :01:13.

:01:13. > :01:16.form as they take on Macedonia? They say you can never hurry a

:01:16. > :01:19.Murray and, at the 5th time of asking, Andy Murray picked up that

:01:19. > :01:24.longed for Grand Slam title, the first man to do so since Fred Perry

:01:24. > :01:27.76 years ago. Tennis fans across Scotland stayed up till the early

:01:27. > :01:31.hours of this morning to watch his the historic five-set victory over

:01:31. > :01:35.Novak Djokovic. The First Minister describes it as an extraordinary

:01:35. > :01:45.achievement and the a's even been a call for Murray to be given a

:01:45. > :01:45.

:01:45. > :01:48.knighthood. -- there's even been a call. We have two reports tonight.

:01:48. > :01:51.In a moment, we'll hear how the fans reacted, but first, David

:01:51. > :02:01.McDaid in New York on how Andy Murray finally achieved his

:02:01. > :02:08.lifetime's ambition. A New York State of mind. Andy Murray with his

:02:08. > :02:13.US Open trophy. Nobody can take that achievement away. When I

:02:13. > :02:18.realised I had won I was very relieved. And was obviously very

:02:18. > :02:23.excited and emotional and very happy and proud. You think a lot

:02:23. > :02:28.about you could hear when a moment like this happens and all the

:02:28. > :02:37.things you've been through, I have had a lot of tough losses, this

:02:37. > :02:42.means a lot to me. -- you think a lot about your career. At last he

:02:42. > :02:50.has done it, I didn't think he would when he went down two six.

:02:51. > :02:55.Absolutely fantastic. Brilliant. Five sets, awesome. Five hours

:02:55. > :03:01.earlier there was a Tartan takeover at Flushing Meadows. They had come

:03:01. > :03:05.from all across Scotland. They did not want to miss this for her the

:03:05. > :03:11.world. It looked as though they had brought some Scottish weather with

:03:11. > :03:18.them. A bowl both players struggled bit look like it bothered Djokovic

:03:18. > :03:24.the most. -- Al broke both players struggled. It was only Murray's

:03:25. > :03:32.second ever set in major finals and he needed more, he got more. In

:03:32. > :03:37.spite of squandering his lead he moved to one set from victory. His

:03:37. > :03:45.coach I've and Lendl even cracked a smile. Then there was this amazing

:03:45. > :03:51.rally. It just does not get any better than that! He won the 4th as

:03:51. > :03:55.well. There would be no glorious Scottish failure this night. Just

:03:55. > :04:02.moments later with his second championship., Andy Murray rewrote

:04:02. > :04:06.history. Andy Murray finally breaks his Grand Slam Cup here in New York.

:04:06. > :04:10.A law it is thousands of miles across the Atlantic, he is well

:04:10. > :04:14.aware of what it means back home. These are Porter I have had back

:04:14. > :04:18.home throughout my whole career has been unbelievable, since I won here

:04:18. > :04:24.as a junior when I was 17. remember coming back from the

:04:24. > :04:28.airport and I was crowded. It is just great support that I have had

:04:28. > :04:32.through so many tough moments. Every time I have gone back to play

:04:32. > :04:37.the Davis Cup they have just been right behind me. I am glad I have

:04:37. > :04:43.given them something to shout about tonight. I look forward to coming

:04:43. > :04:51.back and see them. Scotland are rather looking forward to him

:04:51. > :04:54.coming back so the can see him as well. Tennis fans across Scotland

:04:54. > :05:01.watched the drama unfold and for once they were not to be

:05:01. > :05:06.disappointed. It is never easy being an Andy Murray fan. It was

:05:06. > :05:13.clear from the first set that it was going to be along a night. The

:05:13. > :05:23.tension proved too much for some. For others, it was a real test of

:05:23. > :05:28.endurance. When the moment came, it was clear, it had all been worth it.

:05:28. > :05:35.I am absolutely ecstatic, proud to be Scottish, proud of Andy Murray,

:05:35. > :05:42.he is a national hero. I am delighted for him. It is brilliant.

:05:42. > :05:47.A fantastic match, brilliant. jubilation. An Olympic court had

:05:47. > :05:52.been converted into a Grand Slam dream. I wish she would come home

:05:52. > :05:57.for the biggest street party ever. For his grandparents it was relief

:05:57. > :06:01.after years of waiting and watching from the sidelines, living and

:06:01. > :06:07.breathing every moment. If it is amazing waiting for him to come

:06:07. > :06:12.back. Having been two sets to love he showed real courage and

:06:12. > :06:20.determination. Now that he has got this grand slam which he has been

:06:20. > :06:26.striving so hard for. His talent was spotted in Dunblane. Even at a

:06:26. > :06:34.young age, he had won title in mind. Hopefully I will be playing at

:06:34. > :06:43.Wimbledon in about four years, in junior Wimbledon and maybe senior

:06:43. > :06:49.Wimbledon in a few years after that. He was denied by Roger Federer. So

:06:49. > :06:55.much hope and expectation. He may be dour and with determination but

:06:55. > :07:05.he also showed that he was human. am going to try this and it is not

:07:05. > :07:09.going to be easy. VOICE BREAKS. month later he was back, same place

:07:09. > :07:16.and same opponent. This time he was not just playing for himself, he

:07:16. > :07:21.was playing for the country, and it seemed to make all the difference.

:07:21. > :07:28.Now, with a glint of gold in his eye, Andy Murray was ready. It was

:07:28. > :07:34.as if he believed this was his time. He has worked so hard. He has put

:07:34. > :07:41.so much into this Korea of hemp -- this career of his. He has now got

:07:41. > :07:45.out of this what he deserved. sure all in the chamber will wish

:07:45. > :07:51.for me to record our own congratulations to our own Andy

:07:51. > :07:56.Murray. They say is right up there with the great sporting

:07:56. > :07:59.achievements, like Chris Hoy and Ken Buchanan, it is right up there

:07:59. > :08:06.with the most extraordinary achievements in Scottish sporting

:08:06. > :08:11.history. Well done to Andy Murray. In Dunblane they have always

:08:11. > :08:15.believed that the local boy would battle to glory and become one of

:08:15. > :08:21.the greatest tennis players in history. It was wonderful seeing

:08:21. > :08:26.that footage of that very young Andy Murray beer. Let's go to the

:08:26. > :08:33.place that has seen them grow up. Nowhere have the highs and lows of

:08:33. > :08:38.his career been more closely followed than in Dunblane. I do not

:08:38. > :08:43.know that many people got much sleep last night, let alone these

:08:43. > :08:48.youngsters playing behind me. When he started playing he was no higher

:08:48. > :08:52.than net height. It was not long until he was beating children twice

:08:52. > :08:57.his age. Not many people got much sleep last night including this boy

:08:57. > :09:01.who got to watch the match, what did you think? He played some of

:09:01. > :09:08.the best tennis he has ever played. He came out and the pressure was on

:09:08. > :09:13.but he still got it. What is he like? He is an inspiration to you?

:09:13. > :09:19.He is an inspiration. To get to the final of Wimbledon, and gold in the

:09:19. > :09:23.Olympics and now a grand slam, it is just amazing. These boys are

:09:23. > :09:29.never off the court and young Fraser here is the at every single

:09:29. > :09:33.day. This is the inspiration Andy Murray is proving to be to the

:09:33. > :09:36.younger generation. There is up party I believe planned for this

:09:36. > :09:41.weekend but think of what will happen when Andy Murray finally

:09:41. > :09:46.brings not only his gold medal but his grand-slam trophy home here to

:09:46. > :09:56.Dunblane. Let's keep that footage of those young lads for a future

:09:56. > :10:00.

:10:00. > :10:04.date! Still to come: Calls for greater harmony and charging pupils

:10:04. > :10:07.for extra-curricular music lessons. In sport, we'll have all the build

:10:07. > :10:10.up to Scotland vital World Cup qualifier against Macedonia with

:10:10. > :10:13.perhaps a few surprises in the team line-up. Plus from the Champs

:10:13. > :10:16.Elysee to Dumfries, Tour de France Champion, Bradley Wiggins and co do

:10:16. > :10:19.battle in the borders Their holiday entitlement is the envy of many

:10:19. > :10:27.working people but tonight there's a call for teachers to have even

:10:27. > :10:29.more time off. It follows publication of an independent

:10:29. > :10:34.report indicating teachers in Scotland have the fifth highest

:10:34. > :10:39.workload in the world. The call comes as negotiations to revise

:10:39. > :10:46.teachers' employment contracts get under way. Here's our education

:10:46. > :10:56.correspondent, Seonag MacKinnon. School these are the best days of

:10:56. > :11:03.your life but they are testing, too, especially for staff. I think the

:11:03. > :11:09.longer holidays are essential for the teachers as well as the pupils.

:11:09. > :11:15.Working with students even at adolescent level are very difficult.

:11:15. > :11:20.Teachers need the holiday time. Today's report indicates that

:11:20. > :11:28.teaching time averages 704 hours per year around the world. In

:11:28. > :11:37.Scotland 855 hours. That is not counting time for preparing lessons,

:11:37. > :11:41.doing admin or marking children's work. Outside this school there was

:11:41. > :11:46.a discussion on the case for longer holidays. I think the work really

:11:46. > :11:52.hard but how long do they get? 12 weeks? I think that is quite a lot.

:11:52. > :12:00.They get more than the rest of us who go to work full-time. They

:12:00. > :12:04.think I am a teacher so that might be tricky. Hang on, wait. I am not

:12:04. > :12:08.sure that they need more holidays to be honest but I do think there

:12:09. > :12:16.need to be reasonable safeguards placed on what we expect of

:12:16. > :12:20.teachers. Most credence understand that teaching is not a cushy number.

:12:20. > :12:30.The general public and in particular parents are hugely

:12:30. > :12:35.sympathetic to the teacher's situation. -- Most parents

:12:36. > :12:44.understand. But with us all having a tough time in the recession there

:12:44. > :12:50.is no sign that teacher's bid for longer holidays will be granted any

:12:50. > :12:56.time soon. Two Fisher men have died on a reservoir south of Edinburgh

:12:56. > :13:01.in what appears to have been a tragic accident. 59-year-old David

:13:01. > :13:08.Archer bald was a regular at the reservoir along with his friend who

:13:08. > :13:18.was reported missing on Sunday night. A RAF helicopter found there

:13:18. > :13:20.

:13:20. > :13:24.We recovered two bodies from the end of the lock behind me. We have

:13:24. > :13:28.not managed to find the boat. We need to recover that boat to try

:13:28. > :13:33.and find out what happened and then with the results of the post mortem

:13:33. > :13:35.we will have a better idea of what may have happened. An independent

:13:35. > :13:38.commission chaired by a prominent law lord has gathered to discuss

:13:38. > :13:41.allegations that past Rangers players were paid using so-called

:13:41. > :13:44.side contracts. The panel, set up by the Scottish Premier League and

:13:44. > :13:46.headed by Lord Nimmo Smith, will decide if the club was guilty of

:13:46. > :13:49.any wrong doing. Rangers yesterday announced they wouldn't co-operate

:13:49. > :13:53.as they believe the SPL has no legal authority over the club.

:13:53. > :14:01.A look now at what else has been happening across the country this

:14:01. > :14:07.Tuesday. Family doctors are to stop

:14:07. > :14:12.providing out-of-hours cover, providing the failure of NHS

:14:12. > :14:15.management to tackle short staffing. It is the latest situation that has

:14:15. > :14:19.led to communities advertising for doctors.

:14:19. > :14:26.Scottish Borders Council has been fined after a former employees'

:14:26. > :14:28.pension records were found in an overfilled paper recycles it in a

:14:28. > :14:33.supermarket car park. The Information Commissioner for

:14:33. > :14:39.Scotland said the company that would digitising the records failed

:14:39. > :14:45.to seek guarantees on data security. Aberdeen Exhibition Conference

:14:45. > :14:50.Centre needs to expand in sight to it -- size to attract world-class

:14:50. > :14:55.act. 20 million of public money will be needed to make it bigger.

:14:55. > :15:01.we have a 5,000 seat capacity and increasingly more and more

:15:01. > :15:07.promoters are looking for 7.5000 seated capacity minimum so we do

:15:07. > :15:11.not get a chance of these shows. Scotland's first their trade

:15:11. > :15:15.bursaries programme has been rolled out. The scheme is aimed at

:15:15. > :15:19.ensuring young children become aware of fair trade in line with a

:15:19. > :15:22.curriculum for excellence. It is very important for their trade and

:15:22. > :15:26.it is great to hear about what the staff for already doing that young

:15:26. > :15:29.people and they will follow one from what we're doing in schools.

:15:29. > :15:35.This hopefully will make sure that we become a fair trade nation as

:15:35. > :15:41.well in Scotland. Passenger numbers at Scotland's airports increase in

:15:41. > :15:45.August, backing the UK trend. The biggest rise was at Aberdeen with a

:15:45. > :15:49.9.2% rise on the same month last year. Evra destinations included

:15:49. > :15:52.the Canary Islands, Florida and you buy.

:15:52. > :15:58.There are more stories from your area and the latest news 24 hours a

:15:58. > :16:00.day on BBC Scotland's website. Now, would you like your son or

:16:00. > :16:03.daughter to learn a musical instrument properly? And how much

:16:03. > :16:06.would you be prepared to pay? Well Scotland's 32 councils aren't

:16:07. > :16:11.playing in harmony on this one. Some charge for extra tuition on

:16:11. > :16:13.top of normal music lessons, others don't. And there are calls for a

:16:13. > :16:23.more consistent approach. Here's our local government correspondent

:16:23. > :16:23.

:16:23. > :16:29.Jamie McIvor. Learning a musical instrument can

:16:29. > :16:34.be more than just a hobby. Youngsters on a dislike -- deprived

:16:34. > :16:37.estate in Stirling were taught to play and played alongside this

:16:37. > :16:41.orchestra. The effect on the youngsters themselves and the

:16:41. > :16:50.community has been praised. The tuition they received was free but

:16:50. > :16:53.this was a special project. This boy grew up in another part of

:16:53. > :16:59.Stirling. Over the years his parents paid out hundreds of pounds

:17:00. > :17:03.for tuition. In Glasgow or Edinburgh this could have been free.

:17:03. > :17:08.The education system should be equal for everyone right across so

:17:08. > :17:12.everyone has the same opportunities. It is not particularly fair for

:17:12. > :17:17.everyone. It is something of a postcode lottery. Eight councils

:17:17. > :17:23.don't charge atoll for additional tuition but the rest do. The costs

:17:23. > :17:31.vary widely, anything from 95 to three under 40 a year. The points

:17:31. > :17:35.that have been put to worse is that in some councils music tuition is

:17:36. > :17:41.rare because too many children are being asked to pay. The whole

:17:41. > :17:44.cultural future of Scotland is at stake. Some councils even stand

:17:44. > :17:50.accused of profiteering. The Scottish government says it wants a

:17:50. > :17:53.more level playing field nationally. It is important to draw a slight

:17:53. > :17:58.distinction between music teaching as part of education and music

:17:58. > :18:02.tuition on top of that. Since July the government has been in touch

:18:02. > :18:06.with local authorities about this matter. As for the charges,

:18:06. > :18:15.councils are facing tight budgets and they each have different

:18:15. > :18:18.spending priorities so the local authorities are unlikely to be

:18:18. > :18:24.playing the first -- playing the same tune in perfect harmony any

:18:24. > :18:31.time soon. Let us leave the tennis headlines

:18:31. > :18:34.and dipping to the UN reported world of football.

:18:34. > :18:40.Well, can the Scotland football team take inspiration from Andy

:18:40. > :18:42.Murray. After his heroics in new York, will

:18:42. > :18:45.Andy Murray inspire Scotland's footballers to World Cup qualifying

:18:45. > :18:47.success tonight? Craig Levein has made three changes to his squad to

:18:47. > :18:50.face Macedonia. Charlie Adam, Steven Naismith and Robert

:18:50. > :18:53.Snodgrass all make way for Shaun Maloney, Jamie Mackie and James

:18:53. > :18:56.Forrest. Kenny Miller is once again leading the line for the Scots. The

:18:56. > :18:57.manager has admitted this match at Hampden is a must win game

:18:57. > :19:00.following Saturday's draw against Serbia.

:19:00. > :19:04.The Scotland fans are gearing up for this one. Earlier our reporter

:19:04. > :19:09.Jane Lewis is with some of them in the calm before the storm.

:19:09. > :19:13.As you would expect, this car in Glasgow is just a stone's throw

:19:13. > :19:17.away from the stadium and it is teeming with Scotland fans, looking

:19:17. > :19:21.ahead to the big match. It has become a big match because of what

:19:22. > :19:27.happened on Saturday against Serbia. Tonight is Macedonia and you would

:19:27. > :19:32.agree it is a must-win game. Defra dope -- definitely. Three points

:19:32. > :19:37.are much needed. We believe Craig Levein has made three changes to

:19:37. > :19:41.the team, what do you think about the guys that have come in? After

:19:41. > :19:46.Saturday's game at the they did not create enough so he has made

:19:46. > :19:50.positive changes to try and create something. Hopefully they will and

:19:50. > :19:57.it is good to see changes because he has listened to the fans.

:19:57. > :20:02.Hopefully he hours. Fingers crossed we get three points tonight. What

:20:02. > :20:10.is a fan's deal on Craig Levein? It shows he is willing to make changes

:20:10. > :20:13.for the good of the team. I think it has -- I think he has made they

:20:13. > :20:18.changes and we will ride on the crest of Andy Murray's victory last

:20:18. > :20:21.night. We will get three points. Hopefully Scotland can take

:20:21. > :20:28.inspiration from Andy Murray. You can hear the fans getting right

:20:28. > :20:33.behind them. They could be under some pressure after Saturday's draw

:20:33. > :20:37.but hopefully he will be under less pressure when he takes on Macedonia

:20:37. > :20:41.at this evening. One former Celtic manager, Gordon Strachan, knows a

:20:41. > :20:46.few things about managing under pressure and he has been giving

:20:46. > :20:51.Craig Levein some advice. There is pressure but the real pressure is

:20:52. > :20:55.winning points. The rest of it is a fantasy question created by other

:20:55. > :20:58.people. Craig Levein cannot do anything about that. He is clever

:20:58. > :21:03.enough and wise enough to understand and deal with the real

:21:03. > :21:07.things like picking a team and winning a game of football. That is

:21:07. > :21:11.Gordon Strachan there. Hopefully there will be no pressure for Craig

:21:11. > :21:21.Levein this evening because Scotland will get a win. Are these

:21:21. > :21:23.

:21:23. > :21:26.guys confident? Jane Lewis should get danger money!

:21:26. > :21:29.And you can keep up with all the build up and match action between

:21:29. > :21:31.Scotland and Macedonia on BBC Radio Scotland 810 MW with highlights on

:21:31. > :21:34.BBC One at 10.35pm. Glasgow Warriors have lost the

:21:34. > :21:36.services of back row forward Viliami Ma'afu, who's decided to

:21:36. > :21:39.leave the club with immediate effect. The Tongan international

:21:39. > :21:43.signed in the summer but didn't feature in Saturday's home loss to

:21:43. > :21:46.Scarlets or the opening away fixture. The player has left for

:21:46. > :21:55.personal reasons. Glasgow, however, have brought in South African, Josh

:21:55. > :22:00.Strauss. It is disappointing and disappointing for him as well that

:22:00. > :22:03.he had to return home but we have got to look forward and already

:22:03. > :22:05.this evening we have played well and to have Josh Strauss here we

:22:05. > :22:09.have great competition in the back row.

:22:09. > :22:12.Two of the biggest names in cycling have been in Scotland today as the

:22:12. > :22:15.Tour of Britain came north of the border. Bradley Wiggins and Mark

:22:15. > :22:17.Cavendish are taking part in the race and our reporter Willie
