:00:27. > :00:32.flagship alcohol policy faces a fresh European challenge.

:00:32. > :00:38.The Nepal plane crash takes the life of a man from Dumfries and

:00:38. > :00:45.Galloway. A great, quiet and assuming die.

:00:45. > :00:50.His law of the outdoors took him on his journey.

:00:50. > :00:57.An A-line is paying 5 million to get its name on Glasgow's

:01:09. > :01:12.The Scottish Government's plans to introduce a minimum alcohol price

:01:12. > :01:17.could be blocked by the European Union after a number of countries

:01:17. > :01:22.complained about the legality of the plans. The objections come from

:01:22. > :01:32.some of Europe's largest wine producers. Health secretary tonight

:01:32. > :01:35.

:01:35. > :01:40.stood by the policy saying it saved the likes. -- saved the lives. The

:01:40. > :01:43.Scottish Government want to tackle Scotland's booze culture. The

:01:43. > :01:47.Scottish Whisky Association say that is against European Union law

:01:47. > :01:55.and now they have some powerful allies. Five countries have

:01:55. > :02:00.launched a detailed proposals. All of them a significant wine

:02:00. > :02:05.producers. Another eight countries have made comments. The commission

:02:05. > :02:08.say that content is controversial - - confidential but they have said

:02:08. > :02:15.they have a problem with the compatibility of minimum pricing

:02:15. > :02:18.plans with Community law. They have recognised problems

:02:18. > :02:25.within the proposals and said to the Scottish Government, please

:02:25. > :02:33.explain. So have the plans been by rate in

:02:33. > :02:37.the vineyards of Europe? The EU Commission is looking at it

:02:37. > :02:44.and we will have time to respond to the observations made. It is news

:02:44. > :02:49.to me if they have ruled it out. It looks increasingly certain that

:02:49. > :02:53.the legislation passed here only recently will not come into force

:02:53. > :02:57.any time soon. The Government are confident of their legal position

:02:57. > :03:01.but so too are their opponents. It will be for the European Commission

:03:01. > :03:08.to decide and people don't agree with that it will end up in the

:03:08. > :03:14.courts. Meanwhile the Scottish Government's decision to ban the

:03:14. > :03:17.open display of cigarettes is also being challenged. Legal action from

:03:17. > :03:21.Imperial Tobacco will be argued before the Supreme Court in

:03:21. > :03:29.November. The implementation of the Scottish Government policy has been

:03:29. > :03:35.delayed by the company's objections. One of seven British people killed

:03:35. > :03:41.in a plane crash in Nepal has been named as Darren Kelly, from the

:03:41. > :03:47.Isle of Whithorn, in Dumfries and Galloway. The smouldering aftermath

:03:47. > :03:51.of the crash that claimed 19 lives. Seven Britons perished and amongst

:03:51. > :03:56.them was Darren Kelly, a businessman from Dumfries and

:03:56. > :04:02.Galloway. He only moved there from Lancashire five years ago but had

:04:02. > :04:08.become a popular and respected part of village life.

:04:08. > :04:15.A quiet and unassuming guy. He integrated with the village. If you

:04:15. > :04:24.ask him for help or assistance with a project he was enthusiastic. At

:04:24. > :04:31.terrible loss to the village. His older brother Vincent also died.

:04:31. > :04:37.A lot of sport and adventure first brought him to Scotland.

:04:37. > :04:46.His love of diving brought into the Isle of Whithorn. He was the member

:04:46. > :04:54.of a club. I believe it was his love of the great outdoors which

:04:54. > :04:59.took him on his last journey. Tonight, a village haunted by our

:04:59. > :05:05.recent tragedy and once again. 12 years ago this community lost seven

:05:05. > :05:13.lights in a fishing disaster. Now an adopted son has also died.

:05:13. > :05:17.Different but equally tragic circumstances.

:05:17. > :05:22.A police officer accused of assaulting a man in custody says he

:05:22. > :05:27.is ashamed of what happened. PC Peter Cullen need William Cree in

:05:27. > :05:37.the face at Saltcoats police station. But he claims it was in

:05:37. > :05:40.

:05:40. > :05:44.self-defence. The accused, PC Peter Cullen, has spent much of the

:05:44. > :05:46.morning giving evidence. He told the court he is ashamed of a

:05:46. > :05:52.situation he allowed to get out of control and that he should have

:05:52. > :05:58.dealt with better. He was referring to a fight in a police cell insult

:05:58. > :06:03.courts police station last November. William Cree was in police custody

:06:03. > :06:07.and had to be taken to hospital and treated for a head injury. The

:06:07. > :06:09.police officer told the court that William Cree became very angry

:06:09. > :06:13.after being arrested and that during a scuffle both men fell to

:06:13. > :06:17.the ground. The police officers said he was terrified he was going

:06:17. > :06:24.to be Burton are spat on and use the only body part available to

:06:24. > :06:29.stop that happening. He admitted that he Het William Cree twice in

:06:29. > :06:34.the face with his knee but said it was in self-defence. He denied that

:06:34. > :06:44.he had become the aggressor. When PC Peter Cullen was asked why

:06:44. > :06:46.

:06:46. > :06:52.officers would have given evidence against him he said that date --

:06:52. > :06:57.they did not see the whole incident and they were lying.

:06:57. > :07:06.I European conservation project has been launched to safeguard Scottish

:07:06. > :07:10.freshwater pearl mussels. And coming up, more on the Ryder Cup.

:07:10. > :07:20.Plus, we're in the town where they are getting excited about a

:07:20. > :07:20.

:07:20. > :07:26.Scottish Cup match tomorrow. One of the key Commonwealth Games

:07:26. > :07:29.venues has a new name as part of a 5 million sponsorship deal. On the

:07:29. > :07:33.next 10 years, the complex, including the Sir Chris Hoy

:07:33. > :07:38.Velodrome, will be known as the Emirates Arena. The leader of the

:07:38. > :07:44.city council explained how the money would be spent.

:07:44. > :07:51.This will allow us to continue to invest in sport. As a civic council

:07:51. > :07:59.we have invested 300 million in recent years. But this kind of

:07:59. > :08:05.revenues important. A multi-million pound deal like today's's, it helps

:08:05. > :08:14.to reinforce a reputation as a sporting city.

:08:14. > :08:20.Who gets what as part of this deal? The people of Glasgow and Scotland

:08:20. > :08:25.get a new Velde wrong, a multi- sports venue, with an indoor

:08:25. > :08:30.running track and five-a-side football pitches. Glasgow City

:08:36. > :08:41.time, get their branding on their building for the next 10 years.

:08:41. > :08:51.I can just about see that branding! And the announcement of a new sport

:08:51. > :08:54.for the Games? Yes, you may remember their Team GB

:08:54. > :08:59.Gold medal success in women's boxing and for the Austin and

:08:59. > :09:09.Commonwealth history it will be part of the programme at their to.

:09:19. > :09:24.bonnet has been refused a reduction in a jail sentence. Suzanne

:09:24. > :09:30.Gilchrist was jailed for four years after the high speed chase. It

:09:30. > :09:38.happened when she was a fault to hire car by a security guard who

:09:38. > :09:41.Courage under fire is an understatement to describe the

:09:41. > :09:45.actions of a soldier from Cowdenbeath who has been recognised

:09:45. > :09:49.in the latest military honours. Sergeant Ian Smith has been awarded

:09:49. > :09:56.a Mention in Despatches. Last November Afghanistan he foiled an

:09:56. > :10:02.enemy ambush and under heavy fire led his patrol to safety. He says

:10:02. > :10:08.that it was just another busy day. After three tours and act, two in

:10:40. > :10:43.would not change his life for anything. But he was not on the

:10:43. > :10:50.Scotsman who came in for commendation. It was also a Mention

:10:50. > :10:54.in Despatches for Sergeant Daniel abuse from Arbroath. And for the

:10:54. > :11:04.former commanding officer of the Black Watch, a distinguished

:11:04. > :11:07.

:11:07. > :11:12.Service Order. Reporting Scotland interviewed him earlier this year.

:11:12. > :11:18.People can see the quality of life that is beginning to happen. There

:11:18. > :11:22.is undoubtedly areas of Afghanistan that remain difficult.

:11:22. > :11:29.Difficult days ahead for those still serving in doubt as more

:11:29. > :11:33.The Forth coastguard station has closed as part of a modernisation

:11:33. > :11:43.scheme of the service. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency insists

:11:43. > :11:44.

:11:44. > :11:48.safety won't be compromised. Coastguard rescue teams will

:11:48. > :11:51.continue to carry it essential work. We'll see an enhancement to the

:11:51. > :11:54.rescue service. Bach

:11:54. > :11:58.Police have issued a photograph of the prisoner who escaped from Tain

:12:01. > :12:03.jumping though an open window during a meeting with his lawyer.

:12:03. > :12:06.Police say he's not considered dangerous but should not be

:12:06. > :12:10.approached. 85 jobs have been lost in Aviemore

:12:10. > :12:13.with the closure of the Hero TSC call centre. The company warned in

:12:13. > :12:18.the spring of possible closure unless another firm could be found

:12:19. > :12:21.to replace the site's only client, the HSBC bank.

:12:22. > :12:26.An investigation is underway to find out why a steam hauled train

:12:26. > :12:29.with 100 passengers on board jumped the tracks in the Highlands. No one

:12:29. > :12:34.was hurt when the vintage carriages from the Strathspey steam railway

:12:34. > :12:38.derailed near Nethy Bridge. Heavy lifting machinery is being

:12:38. > :12:42.used in Granton harbour to recover boats damaged by Tuesday's storms.

:12:42. > :12:50.The sailing boats are being lifted out of the before damage to them

:12:50. > :12:56.can be assessed. My passion after my family is my

:12:56. > :13:00.boats. So I am very sad about it. Whether she will be a right of or

:13:00. > :13:03.is repayable, I will not know until we get her out of this terrible

:13:04. > :13:06.rocky shore. A new pair of red pandas has

:13:06. > :13:09.arrived at the Highland Wildlife Park. As a threatened species in

:13:09. > :13:12.the wild, conservationists hope the two will go on to have cubs.

:13:13. > :13:22.And there are more stories from your area and all the latest news,

:13:23. > :13:23.

:13:23. > :13:28.24 hours a day on BBC Scotland's Staying with endangered species,

:13:28. > :13:33.act is one of Scotland's most endangered but the plight of the

:13:33. > :13:40.freshwater pearl mussel is not often highlighted. Now a major

:13:40. > :13:50.conservation project has been launched. This, from our

:13:50. > :13:56.

:13:56. > :14:04.These cold rivers are ideal for the core water pearl mussel, but it is

:14:04. > :14:09.core water pearl mussel, but it is under threat. Physical changes to

:14:09. > :14:17.Habitat and rivers, pollution and chemicals, it is those sorts of

:14:17. > :14:20.things we are trying to deal with. This is a major aid European

:14:20. > :14:26.conservation project, but it is firmly focused on Scotland. That is

:14:26. > :14:31.because Scotland is the vital stronghold for the fresh water

:14:31. > :14:38.pearl mussel. The conservation work will improve water quality, if

:14:38. > :14:48.pulling in benefits other species as well as the muscles. -- as well

:14:48. > :14:49.

:14:49. > :14:56.as the mussels. If we see an angler behind us, we -- it is important to

:14:56. > :15:02.the local economy to. The aim is not just to save the mussel current

:15:02. > :15:05.but to see it gradually return to the rivers where it was once found.

:15:05. > :15:10.We need to protect them from further damage and then restored

:15:10. > :15:15.them back to good health service day now Vivers forever more.

:15:15. > :15:25.that would be easy, but the future of the freshwater pearl mussel is

:15:25. > :15:47.

:15:47. > :15:51.looking a little brighter. Fashions change and so do the photographs. A

:15:51. > :15:58.century of Stalin front of the lens and behind it. These images taken

:15:58. > :16:04.by some of the biggest names in the business. The famous trio of

:16:04. > :16:11.Donovan, Bailey and Duffy it reinvented fashion photography. It

:16:11. > :16:17.produced much more real imagery. Here, we see the fantastic Twiggy,

:16:17. > :16:20.shooting along on a moped. It really does represent a new

:16:20. > :16:30.approach to fashion photography that was very influential across

:16:30. > :16:36.

:16:36. > :16:43.the world. Could he was one of the first fashion icons are one of the

:16:43. > :16:49.first to realise her dream was to sell films as well as fashion.

:16:49. > :16:55.Quite often, you can't even see what is on display in the image.

:16:55. > :17:04.But what this exhibition really shows is just how far that

:17:04. > :17:09.portraiture of women has come. The garments are becoming really

:17:09. > :17:14.secondary to the image that has been printed. The East voters are

:17:14. > :17:19.just a small fraction of the half- a-million that the V&A has in

:17:19. > :17:29.London. The new museum future opened here in Dundee in three

:17:29. > :17:58.

:17:58. > :18:08.years' time it is just a taste of things to come. What a morning we

:18:08. > :18:12.have had here the Ryder Cup. We were like fishermen. McElwaine and

:18:12. > :18:15.Miguel led the charge, but then that came the Americans. They got

:18:15. > :18:20.there early points on the board, which left Europe having to catch

:18:20. > :18:30.up. The afternoon for Paul's have been announced, and Paul Lawrie

:18:30. > :18:43.

:18:43. > :18:47.plays, as expected. Peter Hansen is playing. They will be in action and

:18:47. > :18:56.if we had a lot to like we have had this morning, it will be some all

:18:56. > :19:06.day. -- it will be a great day. Paul Lawrie and the dance and art

:19:06. > :19:10.

:19:10. > :19:14.two-down. -- they are two down. The now, one Ireland League side will

:19:14. > :19:24.get the chance to play one of the biggest teams earlier this year.

:19:24. > :19:29.

:19:29. > :19:32.Forest will come to a standstill tomorrow. -- Forres. In the heart

:19:32. > :19:41.of the Scottish Highlands, there's a club with high hopes. Hopes of

:19:41. > :19:51.seeing off the up position and Women Against the odds. -- the

:19:51. > :19:58.

:19:58. > :20:01.opposition. They are ready for Despite the might of Rangers, the

:20:02. > :20:07.people here are defined. Earlier this week, they queued for hours to

:20:07. > :20:13.see a bit of history. In fact, the demand has given one businessman

:20:13. > :20:23.food for thought. We have done a Willie Walker * competition. We

:20:23. > :20:32.

:20:32. > :20:39.have put tickets inside. -- Willy Wonka style. We are looking to go

:20:39. > :20:49.into the game and try to win it. There is no reason why we can't.

:20:49. > :20:53.

:20:53. > :20:58.Who knows what will happen. They might need Lady Luck. Stuart McCall

:20:58. > :21:06.is hoping his players can bounce back to keep their place at the top

:21:06. > :21:12.of the Premier League. Their only victory came back in January 2011

:21:13. > :21:21.against Celtic. McCall has no time for anyone who questions the

:21:21. > :21:28.commitment of his side. I'm as disappointed as any fan. The other

:21:28. > :21:32.night, the first goal was all- important. We switched off. We did

:21:32. > :21:35.exactly the same 10 minutes later, and then we probably don't have

:21:35. > :21:45.much of a belief. But that is football and we have got a chance

:21:45. > :21:49.

:21:49. > :21:54.to bounce back. Both of Scotland's professional rugby sides are in

:21:54. > :22:00.action tonight. Glasgow warriors are at home of the to the Italian

:22:00. > :22:05.side. The Warriors have won their last two games. The coach has made

:22:05. > :22:13.13 changes to the team with a new signing from South Africa making

:22:13. > :22:20.his debut. It is tough coming in, your first week, in you playbook, a

:22:20. > :22:23.new coach. It is hard work. A little bit of homework, we had good

:22:23. > :22:33.training this week and I'm feeling a lot more comfortable than I did

:22:33. > :22:42.

:22:42. > :22:47.on Sunday. Thank you very much. It is a post office like no other. You

:22:47. > :22:57.are surrounded by Penguin's unseen -- seals and you have no

:22:57. > :23:00.

:23:00. > :23:09.electricity. But Flora St Andrews University -- for his and a dose --

:23:09. > :23:14.but it is a dream job for a certain students. Florence has just

:23:14. > :23:18.graduated from St Andrews University and is about to call

:23:18. > :23:24.Antarctica home after accepting a job at the world's most southerly

:23:24. > :23:34.Post Office. It doesn't sound like your average post-office. Local I

:23:34. > :23:38.

:23:38. > :23:42.think it is the most unique in the There is more to it, of course, and

:23:42. > :23:46.this video diary, produced by those who did the job last year, gives an

:23:46. > :23:56.insight into what she can expect during the four-and-a-half months

:23:56. > :23:57.

:23:57. > :24:03.here. It is complete with a colony of 4,000 penguins. When it comes to

:24:03. > :24:09.coping in this environment, Florence has strong credentials.

:24:09. > :24:13.great, great uncle was a geologist on an exhibition in 1901. I have

:24:13. > :24:18.grown up with his stories and it is really exciting to be a part of it

:24:18. > :24:24.in my small way. The family's newest adventure doesn't quite know

:24:24. > :24:31.what to expect when she travels to Antarctica in November. She is

:24:31. > :24:41.certain that the Wellcome will not be warm.

:24:41. > :24:42.

:24:42. > :24:51.So, how is the weather? Per today we have seen a lot of blustery

:24:51. > :24:58.showers around. Particularly across western parts of the country. At

:24:58. > :25:05.times, there will be longer periods of rain this evening. The winds

:25:05. > :25:11.will pick up. Away from the north- west, it is turning dry. Some clear

:25:11. > :25:15.skies, so chilly for Raul Aberdeenshire, but most places

:25:15. > :25:23.overnight no worse than seven or eight degrees. Been to tomorrow, it

:25:23. > :25:30.starts fairly showery but as we had today, the showers tend to ease and

:25:30. > :25:40.the winds will ease back as well. By the afternoon, sunshine will

:25:40. > :25:40.

:25:40. > :25:46.make an appearance. It should be in reasonably dry and bright day. Some

:25:46. > :25:54.of the sunshine will turn hazy and that we followed by rain. A further

:25:54. > :26:04.east you are, the finer the afternoon. If you are out at about

:26:04. > :26:07.across the north-west Highlands, we will see some pretty hefty showers.

:26:08. > :26:14.Across the eastern Rangers, generally dry air. One or two

:26:14. > :26:20.showers making their way through. If you are out and about on the

:26:20. > :26:30.inshore waters across the South West tomorrow, we can expect a

:26:30. > :26:33.

:26:33. > :26:37.westerly. Over towards the east, it should be a westerly course. The

:26:37. > :26:44.rest of the afternoon into the evening, the rain arrives, sweeping

:26:44. > :26:47.his win from West to east. Fairly heavy for some. The winds also

:26:48. > :26:51.increase. Sunday-morning will be wet and windy but the rain does

:26:51. > :26:57.push through quite quickly and then by the afternoon, it is sunshine

:26:57. > :27:06.and showers. Temperatures in Aberdeen share up to 16 degrees.

:27:06. > :27:16.Next week, low-pressure will continue to feed in. In between,

:27:16. > :27:17.

:27:18. > :27:22.some Orton sunshine. A plane crash in a poor has claimed the lives of

:27:22. > :27:26.seven Britons. The missing schoolgirl and her
