:00:18. > :00:23.And Welcome to Reporting Scotland. Alex Salmond under pressure over

:00:23. > :00:30.independence. Abuse sought advice from your own Scottish law

:00:30. > :00:39.officers? We had. What did they say? The First Minister denies that

:00:39. > :00:43.he lies in that interview from the BBC over advice in EU membership.

:00:43. > :00:52.Those outside this chamber who make those assertions will have the

:00:52. > :00:57.courtesy and integrity to withdraw them. And he loses two MSPs. There

:00:57. > :01:02.opposed to the party's support of NATO.

:01:02. > :01:06.Offshore at unions show growing safety concerns after the ditching

:01:06. > :01:11.of this aircraft in the North Sea. Diggers move into Dalgety Bay to

:01:11. > :01:16.find the extent of radioactive contamination there.

:01:16. > :01:22.And can Celtic see off the might of Messi tonight in the Champions

:01:22. > :01:26.League against Barcelona? The First Minister has denied lying

:01:26. > :01:32.over whether his Government obtained legal advice on an

:01:32. > :01:38.independent Scotland's potential membership of the European Union.

:01:38. > :01:44.Two of his MSPs quit to take over another issue, opponents claim also

:01:44. > :01:50.that he had said he had sought legal advice when it claims today

:01:51. > :01:54.word that he had not. We will hear more on the resignations that first

:01:54. > :01:58.Raymond Buchanan reports from Parliament.

:01:58. > :02:05.Would an independent Scotland state in Europe? The First Minister has

:02:05. > :02:09.always been confident. Have you sorted vice? We have. What did they

:02:09. > :02:14.say? You can read that in the documents be put forward which it

:02:14. > :02:19.argued that position would be successful. What do they say?

:02:19. > :02:24.cannot reveal the legal advice of law officers. That seems a very

:02:24. > :02:29.clear. The advice of law officers was not. But today his own deputy

:02:30. > :02:33.told parliament this. The Scottish Government had previously cited

:02:33. > :02:39.opinions from eminent legal authorities past and present in

:02:39. > :02:43.support of its view that an independent Scotland... In support

:02:43. > :02:46.of its view that an independent Scotland will continue in

:02:46. > :02:52.membership of the European Union that has not sought specific legal

:02:52. > :02:58.advice. A political storm brewed and suddenly the First Minister was

:02:58. > :03:03.on his way to the chamber. You are accused of lying, have you? I will

:03:03. > :03:09.deal with that in Parliament in a few seconds. He made an emergency

:03:09. > :03:13.statement to MSPs saying that he has always been consistent and

:03:13. > :03:18.Labour have selectively quoted his BBC interview. In this partial

:03:18. > :03:25.transcript I have been described as a bare-faced liar and a quote that

:03:25. > :03:31.is used to justified this has me saying in response, we have, yes,

:03:31. > :03:38.you know why cannot release the legal advice all officers. That

:03:38. > :03:44.misses out 27 words across three separate answers. A have you

:03:44. > :03:47.clarified the position now? I think that has been clarified to the

:03:47. > :03:51.chamber's satisfaction. It is clear I was talking about Government

:03:51. > :03:54.documents and I have cited the references to the point. All

:03:54. > :03:59.Government documents are subject to the legal advice of law officers

:03:59. > :04:06.which is what I was referring to and no reasonable person would see

:04:06. > :04:10.anything different. He says bet you made him look like a liar when he

:04:10. > :04:15.is not a liar and if you are being honest you would apologise. I would

:04:16. > :04:22.say, let us have a full and frank debate. It is now time for debate

:04:22. > :04:25.following his statement. The people of Scotland need to have a proper

:04:25. > :04:30.opportunity to know what legal advice was received and how it was

:04:30. > :04:35.received. Nothing that Alex Salmond has said this evening clears up the

:04:35. > :04:38.dispute. We have our members of the Government telling us for months

:04:38. > :04:42.saying that they knew what our position would be in Europe and we

:04:42. > :04:49.find out today that they do not know. They have spent thousands of

:04:49. > :04:54.taxpayers' money trying to keep that information back.

:04:54. > :04:58.Two of the SNP's MSPs and as they were quitting the party over its

:04:58. > :05:03.support for NATO today. It was an angry debate at a party conference

:05:03. > :05:09.last week over at NATO membership of an independent Scotland. The

:05:09. > :05:16.leadership one that to beat. After at the SNP's heated NATO

:05:16. > :05:22.debate, the fall-out. To Highland MSPs left after it they could not

:05:22. > :05:26.stomach the policy of opposing nuclear weapons and Scotland but

:05:26. > :05:34.staying in military alliance. have wrestled with how I can swear

:05:34. > :05:40.staying in the party, I cannot. I cannot advocate joining NATO.

:05:40. > :05:44.is the only reason that I am making this horrendous decision. I am not

:05:44. > :05:50.proud of it, but I feel for my own integrity it is the only thing I

:05:50. > :05:54.can do. She and Hackett and John Finnie were part of a group of MSPs

:05:54. > :06:04.and opposed the leadership during the conference debate last week.

:06:04. > :06:08.

:06:08. > :06:16.The man leading the change was even a year it. -- was shouted at.

:06:16. > :06:21.can shout. You can shout. I knew it was the first SNP reaction to these

:06:21. > :06:25.rare -- resignations? I only had a short time ago. And what you think

:06:25. > :06:29.as somebody that voted for the change of polity on NATO? I think

:06:29. > :06:35.it was the right decisions. It is a decision that many feel

:06:35. > :06:40.passionately about. Will others follow and resign from the party?

:06:40. > :06:48.Here is another that was opposed. Are you considering following them?

:06:48. > :06:52.No comment. That is not the same as snow. No comment.

:06:52. > :06:57.But the party leadership might believe that sacrificing some MSPs

:06:57. > :07:00.is worth a bigger prize. They believe most -- most Scottish

:07:00. > :07:07.people want to stay in NATO and they want them to vote for

:07:07. > :07:12.independence. That has gone out to Holyrood and

:07:12. > :07:16.Raymond Buchanan. Not a great day for the SNP.

:07:16. > :07:20.A probably one of Alex Salmond worst days since becoming minister

:07:21. > :07:24.in 2007. Starting with those Highlands and Islands MSPs saying

:07:25. > :07:30.they were quitting, I understand there is another MSP considering

:07:30. > :07:33.their position following that device they have NATO to beat. Then

:07:33. > :07:37.we have the First Minister rushing to chamber in order to make an

:07:37. > :07:42.emergency statement over whether an independent Scotland would maintain

:07:42. > :07:47.its membership of the EU. Alex Salmond explanation was that he

:07:47. > :07:57.could not ask lobsters for specific details because he did not have

:07:57. > :07:59.

:07:59. > :08:06.specific details. -- Law makers. Opponents are not satisfied vote.

:08:06. > :08:10.Why is this supped -- why it is so important? One of the singular

:08:10. > :08:13.arguments from the SNP is to say that we're good at Government and

:08:13. > :08:18.we are competent, trust us what health and education and then trust

:08:18. > :08:23.us with foreign affairs and tax also. If he has too many of these

:08:23. > :08:32.bad days then the chances of having losing that they will look more

:08:32. > :08:37.likely. -- bad faith. A still to come: from the other

:08:37. > :08:43.side of the world, supporters of Morton football club.

:08:43. > :08:47.And in sport Celtic face Messi in the Champions League tonight. Also

:08:47. > :08:55.Ricky Burns confirms his latest opponent and says he has set up a

:08:55. > :08:58.unification bout for next year. We will also have rugby news.

:08:58. > :09:04.Unions say they are concerned for the safety of offshore workers

:09:04. > :09:09.after the latest ditching of a helicopter in a sea of of Shetland.

:09:09. > :09:14.19 people were rescued after at the incident involving a Super Puma.

:09:14. > :09:17.Eurocopter says it has full confidence in their aircraft

:09:17. > :09:22.despite so many incidents in the last few years.

:09:22. > :09:27.These exclusive pictures showed the helicopter today as it is attached

:09:27. > :09:31.to it hock to protect the aircraft from a heavy swell. It is expected

:09:31. > :09:37.to arrive in the North East tomorrow morning. These pictures

:09:37. > :09:43.show the aftermath of yesterday's ditching. The 17 passengers and two

:09:43. > :09:49.crew clambered into life rafts after being -- and Ben were picked

:09:49. > :09:55.up and airlifted to Orkney and Shetland. Some are recovering their

:09:56. > :10:02.last night and glad to be a light. Yes, I was afraid. But you training

:10:02. > :10:09.kept saying. Everybody was calm. Everybody got away from the

:10:09. > :10:14.helicopter. Or a work as today were left waiting. They were held back

:10:14. > :10:19.by the weather and the decision to ground aircraft similar to that

:10:19. > :10:25.involved in yesterday's incident. And have been offshore for about 35

:10:25. > :10:30.years and I feel very safe in the hand of all helicopter operators in

:10:30. > :10:37.the North Sea. It is one of those things, there is less chance of

:10:37. > :10:42.that and being in a car crash. It is a risk you take. But offshore

:10:43. > :10:48.unions are worried. Yesterday's incident was the third ditching in

:10:48. > :10:52.three years involving a Super Puma. We have had phone calls to date

:10:52. > :10:56.with the concerns of the offshore workers about flying off shore in

:10:56. > :11:00.these types of helicopters. But the reality is that it you want to work

:11:00. > :11:05.of sure you have to be in a helicopter. We need to make sure

:11:05. > :11:10.that it you going a helicopter you OCD and he -- you go safely and to

:11:10. > :11:16.come back safely. The stress but safety is paramount and walkers

:11:16. > :11:21.pass rigorous tests been checked before be unable to fly off shore.

:11:21. > :11:27.It just goes to show that the training we deliver is paramount to

:11:27. > :11:33.these guys see the. The accident staff are right date to be in the

:11:33. > :11:37.Act investigation. Eurocopter also have a team in Aberdeen. The said

:11:37. > :11:43.that they have full confidence in the aircraft. But tonight no one

:11:43. > :11:48.knows when the might fly again. Colin Wight is at heliport tonight.

:11:48. > :11:52.How long a be set to be grounded for?

:11:53. > :11:57.It is anybody guess. Last time it happened it took at least a week

:11:57. > :12:02.before flights got back to normal. A lot will depend on the

:12:02. > :12:06.investigation which will happen in earnest when the helicopter arrives

:12:06. > :12:12.back in Peter Hyett tomorrow morning. There are strong industry

:12:12. > :12:18.rumours that it could have been another gearbox problem. -- in

:12:18. > :12:23.Aberdeen. No one knows for certain at the moment. A lot of this will

:12:23. > :12:26.be examined in detail tomorrow when a special meeting of their

:12:26. > :12:32.helicopter a steering group meets your in Aberdeen bringing all of

:12:32. > :12:38.the industry together. Work to establish the scale of

:12:38. > :12:43.radioactive contamination in Dalgety Bay has begun. It is the

:12:43. > :12:48.largest survey to date and it is thought to come from aircraft

:12:48. > :12:53.scrapped in the First World War. It could become the first area of

:12:53. > :12:59.radioactive land. The digging for answers began this

:12:59. > :13:06.morning. The biggest effort yet to determine the radiation leakage but

:13:06. > :13:10.lights this community. Over the last 12 months they have been found

:13:10. > :13:14.in increasing numbers and strength leaving officials concerned that

:13:14. > :13:20.the problem is getting worse rather than better.

:13:20. > :13:27.We know that ahead land by the yacht club has built using World

:13:27. > :13:31.War II aircraft that had radioactive instrument dials. Here

:13:31. > :13:35.the will decide whether it that is limited to the head land corridor

:13:35. > :13:39.just how far back it goes. The Ministry of Defence to responsible

:13:39. > :13:44.for the aircraft have agreed to carry out the work and have a

:13:44. > :13:50.deadline of May to produce a plan to clean up the area once and for

:13:50. > :13:54.all. This is the biggest piece of work that has been done to date. We

:13:54. > :13:58.will be looking at that roses as it goes on to make sure that thing is

:13:58. > :14:04.that for a purpose. It will bring about a characterisation of the

:14:04. > :14:08.site. Her so sensitive is this issue that the sailing club or at

:14:08. > :14:15.the Les -- were the last to allow the work to start and refused

:14:15. > :14:22.permission to fill today -- to film today. I am pleased it is finally

:14:22. > :14:26.happening. It is staged two of the investigation. I am optimistic that

:14:26. > :14:31.we're going somewhere wet this investigation. The light is no

:14:31. > :14:36.appearing at the end of the tunnel. Life in Dalgety Bay goes on as

:14:36. > :14:39.normal but there is an apprehension, in six months a plan must be in

:14:39. > :14:47.place to avoid this becoming the first contaminated land in the

:14:47. > :14:50.country. A couple in their 60s found dead in

:14:50. > :14:53.their home yesterday in the Muirend area of Glasgow have been named as

:14:53. > :14:57.George Garcia and his wife Betsy. It is understood police are not

:14:58. > :15:01.seeking anyone else in connection with their deaths.

:15:01. > :15:04.Some university lecturers are striking today. Members of the EIS

:15:04. > :15:10.union, who mostly work in newer universities, have walked out in

:15:10. > :15:20.pursuit of a pay claim. Union leaders say below-inflation rises

:15:20. > :15:23.

:15:23. > :15:27.over three years mean in real terms lecturers' pay has been cut by 12%.

:15:27. > :15:29.The Highland Council say disruption should be kept to a minimum as work

:15:29. > :15:32.gets underway moving utility pipes and cables in Inverness ahead of

:15:32. > :15:42.new flood defences being built in the city. Construction of the flood

:15:42. > :15:47.

:15:47. > :15:50.defences on the tidal part of the river Ness starts next year.

:15:50. > :15:58.want to mature into swimming when you're 16 and then make the series

:15:58. > :16:01.decisions. A 10 million fund to help build

:16:01. > :16:07.local sports facilities has been launched as part of the build up to

:16:07. > :16:10.the Commonwealth Games. Grant applications are being sought from

:16:10. > :16:13.across Scotland. The Active Places Fund aims to help people to take up

:16:13. > :16:15.or do more physical exercise. A new network of footpaths is being

:16:15. > :16:18.built to connect the Culloden Battlefield with the surrounding

:16:18. > :16:20.local community. The 200,000 project will link the villages of

:16:20. > :16:27.Balloch, Smithton and Culloden, and enable walkers to reach the

:16:27. > :16:30.historic battlefield through 5 miles of trails. It is important

:16:30. > :16:33.that people understand the impact that it had here and throughout the

:16:33. > :16:36.world. The Scottish Government is pumping

:16:36. > :16:39.1.7 million into restoring damaged peatlands. They cover about 20% of

:16:39. > :16:41.Scotland and research suggests they play a key role in reducing

:16:41. > :16:44.greenhouse gas emissions. And there are more stories from

:16:44. > :16:54.your area, and all the latest news, 24 hours a day on BBC Scotland's

:16:54. > :16:57.

:16:57. > :17:00.It's been a mystery for nearly 70 years. Just what did happen to

:17:00. > :17:03.dozens of bodies recovered after a wartime sea tragedy off the west

:17:03. > :17:06.coast of Scotland? It's long been suspected the men were dumped

:17:06. > :17:09.without ceremony in a mass grave as part of an official cover-up and

:17:09. > :17:11.work under way this week could finally prove it. Willie Johnston

:17:11. > :17:14.reports. March 1943, the British aircraft carrier explodes and sinks

:17:14. > :17:18.in the Firth of Clyde. It was a US merchant ship converted by the

:17:18. > :17:22.Americans for war. The ship was not safe. In fact, it could be

:17:22. > :17:29.described as being a floating bomb. There was a constant smell of

:17:29. > :17:36.petrol on that ship. All it required was a spark for it to blow

:17:36. > :17:41.up. It did and 379 it died. If you were commemorated in a cemetery.

:17:41. > :17:45.But many others were disposed of quietly as part of a cover-up to

:17:45. > :17:51.avoid embarrassing the Americans by revealing the true loss of life.

:17:51. > :17:55.From early on, there was talk of a mass grave. John Steele believes it

:17:55. > :18:02.right here, beside the marked graves, and he persuaded the

:18:02. > :18:06.council to petition the courts to investigate. We're trying to assess

:18:06. > :18:13.whether there is an unmarked grave there by doing as little damage to

:18:13. > :18:18.the ground as we possibly can, so we are really taken off the top

:18:18. > :18:23.soil to see if there is a burial ground there. Only a handful of

:18:23. > :18:27.victims were ever identified and given a proper burial. At least 44

:18:27. > :18:30.bodies recovered simply disappeared. If they ended up dumped in a mass

:18:30. > :18:39.grave, the work taking place this year should prove that and allow

:18:39. > :18:44.them finally to be properly remembered. 69 years later.

:18:44. > :18:48.Sport now and a task ahead for Celtic?

:18:48. > :18:51.Yes, they certainly do. Celtic are in Barcelona for a match their

:18:51. > :18:58.manager Neil Lennon's described as their ultimate test. They are up

:18:58. > :19:05.against the Spanish giants in the Champions League this evening.

:19:05. > :19:09.Think of Barcelona and perhaps you think of this. Maybe you think of

:19:09. > :19:14.the football club and, if so, you may think of this man, Lionel Messi.

:19:14. > :19:19.Perhaps the greatest player ever, his record is frightening. At just

:19:19. > :19:24.25 years old, he's already scored 180 league goals, 15 coming last

:19:24. > :19:30.season alone. They have helped him win five league titles, and three

:19:30. > :19:37.Champions Leagues. Just how do Celtic stop him? He is tough to

:19:37. > :19:45.deal with him. Watching him live for the first time on Saturday

:19:45. > :19:49.night was a privilege. He was just exceptional. I don't think I could

:19:49. > :19:55.come up with any superlatives which could do him justice. He wants his

:19:55. > :19:59.side to relish the opportunity to come up against the company and

:19:59. > :20:05.they are enjoying the trip and the prospect of watching his side take

:20:05. > :20:11.to the pitch. I'm optimistic but worried at the same time. A lot of

:20:11. > :20:17.people are writing us off but keep the face. The set pieces are going

:20:17. > :20:20.to be very important. These visiting supporters can take some

:20:20. > :20:26.heart from the knowledge they had twice come away from here withdraws

:20:26. > :20:31.in recent years. That was before Lionel Messi, though, and the

:20:31. > :20:39.goalkeeper will be a busy man at tonight. There is commentary on BBC

:20:39. > :20:42.Radio Scotland. Sportsound is on air now. And there will live text

:20:42. > :20:45.updates on-line too. Glasgow Warriors have signed former

:20:45. > :20:47.New Zealand Under-20 back Sean Maitland subject to a medical on a

:20:47. > :20:49.two-and-a-half year contract. The 24-year-old qualifies to play for

:20:49. > :20:52.Scotland through his grandparents, who were both born in Glasgow.

:20:52. > :21:02.Meanwhile, Edinburgh centre Nick De Luca says the club's poor start to

:21:02. > :21:04.

:21:04. > :21:07.this season. Is the fault of the players and not head coach Michael

:21:07. > :21:11.Bradley. Ricky Burns has set up a potential

:21:11. > :21:15.unification fight for early next year. The Scot will be favourite

:21:15. > :21:18.over the Englishman on the 15th December in London. He admits a big

:21:18. > :21:21.motivator is the thought of a unification bout with Adrien Broner

:21:21. > :21:23.of America. It's the month of October, when in

:21:23. > :21:26.racing the Jump Season gets properly under way. The racecourse

:21:26. > :21:36.at Musselburgh saw the official launch and it was a moment to

:21:36. > :21:39.

:21:39. > :21:43.celebrate recent success. Jonathan Sutherland's been checking the form.

:21:43. > :21:49.With some girl power lingering in the air, racing is in a pretty good

:21:49. > :21:52.place at the moment. There is the jockey, Lucy Alexander, 22 years

:21:52. > :21:57.old and in her first year as a professional, she has had 38

:21:57. > :22:04.winners, not bad in a male- dominated sport. Could you be a

:22:04. > :22:09.role model? Hopefully. Hopefully people will see that there's not

:22:09. > :22:14.such a barrier being a girl these days. If it brings more people into

:22:14. > :22:20.the sport, that's good. I never thought somebody is pretty and kind

:22:20. > :22:24.and nice as she is could combine that toughness with the skill she

:22:24. > :22:29.has got. She's doing a fantastic job. The Scots are showing good

:22:29. > :22:39.form. Jack Dexter won at Ascot this weekend although he was

:22:39. > :22:44.overshadowed by another horse. big emotional day. It was just

:22:44. > :22:54.superb. Jack Dexter on another day would have done well and been a big

:22:54. > :22:54.

:22:54. > :22:59.story. We bred him. He was one of the favourites. To go down there

:22:59. > :23:04.and win at Ascot is a big story in Scotland whatever. Another big

:23:04. > :23:09.story is the Scottish jumps season getting under way. There's no

:23:09. > :23:11.Frankel, but there is drizzle, but there is a sense in the sport that

:23:11. > :23:17.the wind is blowing in the right direction.

:23:17. > :23:21.That is your sport for this evening. A little bit more sport, though.

:23:21. > :23:24.Greenock Morton Football club has found a new group of fans and they

:23:24. > :23:27.are anything but local. In fact some come from thousands of miles

:23:27. > :23:29.away. They are Filipino and Italian sailors who have been stranded in

:23:29. > :23:34.Greenock for nearly three months after their ship was impounded.

:23:34. > :23:38.Aileen Clarke reports. This a bulk carrier has not been

:23:38. > :23:42.carrying anything since August. Impounded in Greenock Until

:23:42. > :23:46.financial issues are sorted out, the crew, comprising of Italians

:23:46. > :23:52.and Filipinos, are embracing the local culture. Keen football fans,

:23:52. > :23:56.they discovered the home ground of Greenock Morton was short ground

:23:56. > :23:59.from the ship, so the crew have been getting a taste of first

:23:59. > :24:03.division football which makes a welcome change from their own

:24:03. > :24:13.kickabout on the quayside. We are happy to watch the game. We enjoy

:24:13. > :24:14.

:24:14. > :24:21.it too much. Who would you normally be supporting? Morton. Morton.

:24:21. > :24:26.we find out that the people are very crazy about football. And the

:24:26. > :24:30.crowd are good, very happy. Quite so relaxed crowd watching the team

:24:30. > :24:34.training today. The club are sitting third in the First Division

:24:34. > :24:40.and on a six-match unbeaten run. A good time to be picking up more

:24:40. > :24:47.fans. It's good to know we have got people from a different country,

:24:47. > :24:53.not understanding Scottish football, perhaps, but I think they have

:24:53. > :24:58.praised us. Maybe more Filipinos will come on the boat and watch as

:24:58. > :25:02.next week. The club's global appeal is nothing new. In the shop, they

:25:02. > :25:08.are aware of the international fans, and a rake descending steps to

:25:08. > :25:15.Australia, New Zealand, America, even Japan. -- a regular the

:25:15. > :25:18.sending strips. -- regularly sending strips. Maybe these guys

:25:18. > :25:24.are better spectators. Let's get the weather now from

:25:24. > :25:29.Jackie, thank you very much. Stubborn mist and fog around today.

:25:29. > :25:34.A lovely picture from Catherine here. This evening and overnight,

:25:34. > :25:40.we will see a return of some mist and fog and in the south, some low

:25:40. > :25:43.cloud of thick enough to produce some trouble -- drizzle. Clear

:25:43. > :25:48.skies in the Central lowlands and temperatures will fall away down to

:25:48. > :25:52.minus two. In the south, with a cloud, it will be milder. Tomorrow

:25:52. > :25:56.morning, it will start fairly sunny and bright but there will be mist

:25:56. > :26:00.and fog first thing. Further south, generally dry but cloudy as we head

:26:00. > :26:05.through much of the day. And, in the north, across Orkney and

:26:05. > :26:10.Shetland, Caithness, the Outer Hebrides, cloudy for much of the

:26:10. > :26:14.day with outbreaks of light rain. Here are the brighter conditions,

:26:14. > :26:20.towards Aberdeen by the afternoon, stretching down to Kintyre and the

:26:20. > :26:24.south-west. The rest of the afternoon into the evening, and

:26:24. > :26:28.overnight, we continue to see those light outbreaks of rain in the far

:26:28. > :26:32.north and that is part of a weather front which is slowly moving its

:26:32. > :26:36.way southwards. You can see the cold front clearly there and it's

:26:36. > :26:40.quite important because it's the dividing line between the

:26:40. > :26:44.conditions we have seen and the conditions on the way. The yellow

:26:44. > :26:48.is being replaced by this a blue air coming down from the north, so

:26:48. > :26:55.it will be cold for Thursday and Friday, but actually better weather

:26:55. > :26:59.will come, dry and bright once the cloud breaks. If we take a look at

:26:59. > :27:04.the source region for it, and see where it is coming from, trace the

:27:04. > :27:08.isobars back, it's coming from the Arctic, so no wonder it is cold and

:27:08. > :27:13.there will be some snow as well, particularly in the hills and

:27:13. > :27:19.mountains of the north-east. On low levels in the Shetlands and very

:27:19. > :27:23.cold indeed. Dry, bright, crisp, sunny but cold, five degrees. That

:27:23. > :27:26.Thank you very much for that, Christopher.

:27:26. > :27:28.Now just time for a summary of tonight's main stories. The First

:27:28. > :27:31.Minister has denied lying over whether his government obtained

:27:31. > :27:34.legal advice on an independent Scotland's potential membership of

:27:34. > :27:36.the European Union. On the day two of his MSPs quit over another issue,

:27:36. > :27:40.Alex Salmond appeared before parliament after opponents claimed

:27:40. > :27:43.he had said in an interview he had sought legal advice, when it was

:27:43. > :27:46.confirmed today the party had not. The Director General of the BBC

:27:46. > :27:48.faced a grilling from MPs today over the Jimmy Savile sex abuse

:27:48. > :27:51.scandal. George Entwistle admitted that the corporation's handling of
