:00:27. > :00:34.on new details emerged about the fatal shooting of this man in the

:00:34. > :00:44.capital. Please widen the enquiry. We are making investigations across

:00:44. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:56.the United Kingdom and will continue to follow those avenues. And also

:00:56. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :01:05.the same-sex marriage bill will go in to Holyrood this month. A ban on

:01:05. > :01:14.smoking while children are inside. And the father of Scottish crime

:01:14. > :01:21.novels, his classics hit the boot shells again. And the new man to

:01:21. > :01:28.lead Scottish rugby, but not for another year. A strange decision

:01:28. > :01:38.says one former international. Police are trying to piece together

:01:38. > :01:39.

:01:39. > :01:49.a series of events that brought a car chase and gun event in

:01:49. > :01:50.

:01:50. > :01:58.Edinburgh. At 220 men are thought to be involved. -- up to 20 men. Our

:01:58. > :02:02.reporter has more. This quiet street remains cordoned off. You can still

:02:02. > :02:09.see the tent where the man died after being shot in the body several

:02:09. > :02:14.times. That was the end of a car chase. The events that led to this

:02:14. > :02:22.unfolded in another part of the city. Windows smashed and what

:02:22. > :02:27.appear to be bullet holes by the door. This is where these leave the

:02:27. > :02:34.gangland shooting began on Saturday night. Police are still trying to

:02:34. > :02:43.trace ten men. There were 2-macro groups of vehicles chasing each

:02:43. > :02:53.other across the city. And this man was short and left for dead on a

:02:53. > :02:53.

:02:53. > :02:59.suburban street. The dramatic events began here in the high -- early

:02:59. > :03:06.began here in the high -- early hours of Sunday morning. The man who

:03:06. > :03:13.was shot was left on the street dying. Others sped away, possibly

:03:13. > :03:18.through the tennis club and up the hill. Police were looking for any

:03:18. > :03:22.evidence of the chase. 45 minutes evidence of the chase. 45 minutes

:03:22. > :03:28.after that attack another man was found injured. His injuries are not

:03:28. > :03:38.thought to be then. These officers continued to sweep Gardens and

:03:38. > :03:40.

:03:40. > :03:49.streets looking for clues today. The man who was shot and his father were

:03:49. > :03:54.arrested over drugs offences earlier in the month. He was a jolly boy who

:03:54. > :04:03.was running about here and there. Nobody knew she would be involved in

:04:03. > :04:12.these kind of activities. We now know this is a nationwide hunt for

:04:12. > :04:22.the killer with police forces across the UK involved. There is a third

:04:22. > :04:24.

:04:24. > :04:29.unconnected incident also being investigated in the region. The

:04:29. > :04:32.Scottish Government is to press ahead with plans for gay marriage.

:04:32. > :04:36.It's told MSPs the necessary legislation will be introduced at

:04:36. > :04:38.Holyrood within the next month. But, religious

:04:38. > :04:41.religious organisations who do not want to conduct same sex marriage

:04:41. > :04:51.ceremonies. We're joined now by our Political Editor Brian Taylor,

:04:51. > :04:55.

:04:55. > :05:05.Brian. The Cabinet Secretary announced he was going ahead with

:05:05. > :05:07.

:05:07. > :05:12.the Bill and said it would happen sooner rather than later. He said

:05:12. > :05:21.electoral calculations never entered his mind. I am not thinking in terms

:05:21. > :05:28.of a referendum but rather the principles of the Bill. I would hope

:05:28. > :05:36.the timetable would be such that we could see this Bill become law

:05:36. > :05:40.sooner rather than later. Several religious organisations still have

:05:40. > :05:49.reservations about this law, will baby given the guarantees they want?

:05:49. > :05:56.The Minister mentioned consultation, that drew a substantial response.

:05:56. > :06:06.Many of religious persuasion have believe though. We have seen

:06:06. > :06:11.

:06:11. > :06:16.opposition to those wanting the Bill to go through. Those who are in

:06:16. > :06:23.favour of the idea of same-sex marriage say the idea of civil

:06:23. > :06:29.partnerships should be extended to mixed sex couples. He gave a

:06:29. > :06:39.guarantee that those churches who do not want to conduct same-sex

:06:39. > :06:40.

:06:40. > :06:43.marriages will get that legal protection. People waited have been

:06:43. > :06:47.waiting longer than ever in Scottish Accident and Emergency departments.

:06:47. > :06:50.Since December one in ten people have waited four hours or more to be

:06:50. > :06:56.seen or transferred. Our health correspondent Eleanor Bradford joins

:06:56. > :07:00.us now. Announced more details today of a 50 million action plan to

:07:00. > :07:10.speed up patients journeys through emergency depts. You're watching

:07:10. > :07:10.

:07:11. > :07:18.Reporting Scotland from the BBC. We have seen higher than normal levels

:07:18. > :07:22.of nodal virus and flu. All this means that one in ten people have

:07:22. > :07:32.been waiting for hours or more to be treated since Christmas with

:07:32. > :07:32.

:07:32. > :07:40.ridiculously long wait in the Lothians. These would seem out with

:07:40. > :07:48.the control of anyone. As well as all the chaos with the weather there

:07:48. > :07:53.have even higher levels of certain viruses and flu than we have seen in

:07:53. > :08:01.this winter just gone. This has led to criticism of the government for

:08:01. > :08:09.not handling rings correctly. More people have been treated in under

:08:09. > :08:15.four hours. A number of people are being treated at 90 cent. Across

:08:15. > :08:24.Scotland as a whole the figure is 92%. That is not a figure I would

:08:24. > :08:31.like to see but we need to get to between 95 and 98%. That is our

:08:31. > :08:41.objective. There was also an action plan previously announced to speed

:08:41. > :08:43.

:08:44. > :08:53.up peoplepos-mac progress through the NHS. Engineers on the Clyde boot

:08:53. > :08:56.the finishing touches to an aircraft carrier. And three novels credited

:08:56. > :08:58.with starting "tartan noir" are republished for the first time in

:08:58. > :09:01.two decades In sport a former Scotland rugby international says

:09:01. > :09:05.it's a strange decision to appoint a new National coach who won't take

:09:05. > :09:07.charge for another year. He says there would be an outcry in other

:09:07. > :09:11.sports. And Scots athletes have travelled far and wide to qualify

:09:11. > :09:18.for Glasgow 2014. So far 25 have gone the distance in their bid to

:09:18. > :09:22.represent team Scotland. A man accused of murdering South Uist

:09:22. > :09:25.teenager Liam Aitchison on Stornoway has told a court he didn't kill him.

:09:25. > :09:34.22-year-old Stefan Millar is giving evidence in his own defence in the

:09:34. > :09:38.trial at the high court in Glasgow. Catriona Renton reports. They

:09:38. > :09:48.stabbed and beaten body was found here at this derelict house near

:09:48. > :09:49.

:09:49. > :09:59.Stornoway. The man had moved to Lewis shortly before he died. He

:09:59. > :10:00.

:10:00. > :10:07.became acquaintances with the accused. The court were called about

:10:07. > :10:11.the evening of November 22. The drinking

:10:11. > :10:21.drinking at the house of the co- accused, they had been fooling

:10:21. > :10:31.around. The court has previously heard that we had been accused of

:10:31. > :10:33.

:10:33. > :10:43.stealing a bottle of aftershave. Mr Miller tried to say that we knew he

:10:43. > :10:45.

:10:45. > :10:52.had stolen it. The QC asked if he had punched Liam and he said he had

:10:52. > :11:02.not. Miller said the three had what together until Liam left them on

:11:02. > :11:09.

:11:09. > :11:18.this road to go to the house of a friend. His cell-mate alleges that

:11:18. > :11:25.he admitted to the killing. Miller denied that. He said he had never

:11:25. > :11:30.been to the house where we was found. Both accused deny modelling

:11:30. > :11:37.Liam by stabbing him, hitting him with a bottle and stamping on his

:11:37. > :11:40.head. The case continues. One of the men accused of murdering three

:11:40. > :11:43.members of a Helensburgh family, also slashed a man's face more than

:11:43. > :11:46.eight times, a court has heard. Richard McKinney said Robert

:11:46. > :11:54.Jennings attacked him as he returned home from work at Rhu marina in

:11:54. > :11:57.January 2010. Mr Mckinney also told the court that he had complained to

:11:57. > :12:02.his boss at work about his colleague Scott Snowden, the other man accused

:12:02. > :12:05.of killing the Sharkey family in a house fire in July 2011. Robert

:12:05. > :12:10.Jennings and Scott Snowden deny murder as well as other charges

:12:10. > :12:17.against them including the assault on Mr McKinney. Should smoking be

:12:17. > :12:19.banned in vehicles when children are inside? One MSP is launching a bid

:12:19. > :12:29.to make it illegal and he's supported by a number of health

:12:29. > :12:34.

:12:34. > :12:35.organisations. But a smokers' campaign group says the move is

:12:35. > :12:41.unnecessary and an intrusion into people's lives. Andrew Anderson

:12:41. > :12:49.reports. This has been a common sight on our streets with smokers

:12:50. > :12:59.having to leave pubs and restaurants to light up. Cigarettes now have two

:13:00. > :13:00.

:13:00. > :13:06.be covered in shops selling them. Now there is a call to ban smoking

:13:06. > :13:13.in cars were a child is present. This is about protecting young longs

:13:13. > :13:22.in an enclosed space where there is smoking present. What do smokers

:13:22. > :13:29.think of that? If they are going to ban it, how can they? If there are

:13:29. > :13:35.other people in the car it should be banned. It is up to the pagans.EB

:13:35. > :13:43.games here is fine just now but what we will see is if we put it in the

:13:43. > :13:49.car and someone lights up. argument is that being in a car

:13:49. > :13:55.where someone is smoking is like being in industrial smog. It can

:13:55. > :14:02.cause damage in the short term with glue ear and emergency admissions.

:14:02. > :14:07.Also in the long-term with things like emphysema and run titres. The

:14:07. > :14:17.world health organisation with tell us that anything above 10,000 with

:14:17. > :14:20.

:14:20. > :14:24.the cause for concern. A ban on smoking in private vehicles would

:14:24. > :14:29.represent a major intrusion into people's private lives. The proposal

:14:29. > :14:34.to make smoking illegal in vehicles that carry children will go out to

:14:34. > :14:41.public consultation. The Government is putting out an awareness campaign

:14:41. > :14:47.and will study its success before deciding on further measures.

:14:47. > :14:53.Emergency services are searching an area of Scapa Flow in Orkney the two

:14:53. > :14:57.divers who have gone missing. A lifeboat and helicopter at the

:14:57. > :15:05.scene. The divers have been diving on the wreck of a German battleship

:15:05. > :15:09.that is lying in 36 metres of water. The soft drink manufacturer Barr's

:15:09. > :15:16.is reporting an increase in sales, outperforming the market. Total

:15:16. > :15:20.revenue increased by 2.4%, compared with one year ago. Company says it

:15:20. > :15:23.compares favourably with the overall drinks market, which was flat. The

:15:23. > :15:29.Competition Commission is due to report on a planned merger between

:15:29. > :15:34.Britvic and AG Barr. Engineers on the Clyde are putting

:15:34. > :15:37.physician taxes -- finishing touches to an aircraft carrier. They're

:15:37. > :15:47.planning on moving it to a barge and then move it to Rosyth where the

:15:47. > :15:52.

:15:52. > :15:58.ahead of time, it is almost ready to go, a 750 tonne piece of a giant

:15:58. > :16:02.steel jigsaw. This is like an airport tower, and

:16:02. > :16:07.from here, the new aircraft carrier will be able to aim its punch, its

:16:07. > :16:11.fighter jets and helicopters. It is on a scale, in terms of

:16:11. > :16:18.engineering and production, that we have never seen before. It is a

:16:18. > :16:23.challenge and feet. When you see the aircraft carrier in Rosyth, it is a

:16:23. > :16:30.view to behold. It will provide a fantastic capability for the nation

:16:30. > :16:35.going forward. Assembling the vessel presents a challenge. HMS Queen

:16:35. > :16:40.Elizabeth is so vast she has been built section by section in yards

:16:40. > :16:45.right around the UK and puts together at Rosyth dockyard in Fife.

:16:45. > :16:50.The sheer scale of the ship is all too obvious when pieces, like this,

:16:51. > :16:55.I moved up the River Forth for assembly. When she is ready, the

:16:55. > :16:59.flight deck will carry four acres and will be home to as many as 40

:16:59. > :17:04.jet planes. This part of a carrier is designed

:17:04. > :17:11.to control the aircraft which fly from here. In an emergency, it can

:17:11. > :17:18.be used to control the whole ship. 65,000 tonne vessel will be steered

:17:18. > :17:24.using this little wheel. -- of the 65,000. In two weeks, this piece of

:17:24. > :17:34.the ship will be loaded onto a barge ready for its journey around the

:17:34. > :17:39.

:17:39. > :17:42.Let's look at other stories from across the country. A Shetland

:17:42. > :17:45.salmon farmer has become the first person in the UK to be convicted of

:17:45. > :17:48.using nets which can kill seals. Graham McNally pled guilty at

:17:48. > :17:51.Lerwick Sheriff Court to using prohibited nets to catch or kill the

:17:51. > :17:58.animals over a five month period in 2011 while he was regional manager

:17:59. > :18:01.at Meridian Salmon Farm. He was fined 800.

:18:01. > :18:04.Highland Council's leader says Easyjet has given an encouraging

:18:04. > :18:08.response to questions on the future of Inverness-Gatwick flights. A

:18:08. > :18:10.three times a day service operated by Flybe is in doubt following the

:18:10. > :18:13.airline's decision to sell its take-off and landing slots at

:18:13. > :18:21.Gatwick. Easyjet, which also operates a Gatwick-Inverness

:18:21. > :18:24.service, is set to take over the slots next March in a 20m deal.

:18:24. > :18:27.Virgin Trains is increasing the number of seats on its trains

:18:27. > :18:30.between Scotland and Birmingham by more than a quarter to cope with

:18:30. > :18:35.increasing demand. An extra 3500 seats will be offered every day from

:18:35. > :18:43.December. Argyll and Bute Council is facing

:18:43. > :18:46.further political turmoil. A newly formed grouping of councillors,

:18:46. > :18:49.called Argyll and Bute For Change, wants to take over from the new SNP,

:18:49. > :18:54.Liberal Democrat and Conservative ruling administration - which only

:18:54. > :18:57.officially took power last week. The number of basking shark

:18:57. > :19:00.sightings off Scotland's west coast has fallen this year - possibly due

:19:00. > :19:03.to the cold spring weather. The Marine Conservation Society says the

:19:03. > :19:08.lower sea temperatures may have reduced the presence of plankton -

:19:08. > :19:11.the basking shark's favourite food. And there are more stories from your

:19:11. > :19:21.area - and all the latest news, 24 hours a day on BBC Scotland's

:19:21. > :19:30.

:19:30. > :19:35.start of an era in Scottish crime writing called tartan noir are being

:19:35. > :19:38.republished for the first time in 20 years. Despite the boom in even

:19:38. > :19:45.reading, the Laidlaw trilogy is being republished in the

:19:45. > :19:50.old-fashioned form. You think of Glasgow, that each of

:19:50. > :19:58.its four Corners is kind of a housing scheme. There is pollack and

:19:58. > :20:03.Castlemilk. William McEldowney observed a city on a cusp of change.

:20:03. > :20:05.Glasgow folk have to be nice people, otherwise they would have burned the

:20:05. > :20:11.place to be nice people, otherwise they would have burned the placed

:20:11. > :20:17.the ground. Like to write about a certain character. Once I knew it

:20:17. > :20:25.was in Glasgow, I wanted a way to go around Glasgow and go to the bad

:20:25. > :20:28.places as well as the good. No mean city, no ordinary city, Glasgow is a

:20:28. > :20:32.character in the Laidlaw trilogy, because William McIlvanney never set

:20:32. > :20:40.out to write a detective novel. More recent crime writers like

:20:40. > :20:44.Christopher Brockmeier say that he was an inspiration.

:20:45. > :20:49.It is partly encouraging because you see someone from your own part of

:20:49. > :20:56.the world and uses your language, but it is also intimidating when he

:20:56. > :21:00.is so good. These crime novels were out of print, ironically it is an

:21:00. > :21:04.Edinburgh publisher that is revising them. Laidlaw, when it was first

:21:04. > :21:13.published, change the face of Scottish writing and crime writing.

:21:13. > :21:18.The appetite has never been bigger the Scottish crime fiction. There

:21:18. > :21:23.has never been a better time for Laidlaw to be got up the fact back

:21:23. > :21:32.on the market. There is talk of television and film and William

:21:32. > :21:38.McAvennie has not visited -- ruled out revisiting the genre. Would not

:21:38. > :21:41.advertise it as people die of old age for me to fulfil some of my

:21:41. > :21:51.ambitions, but a prequel is possible. Will there be another

:21:51. > :21:54.There is a bit of mystery now surrounding the new Scotland rugby

:21:54. > :22:01.coach. There has been head scratching going

:22:01. > :22:05.on. Thank you, Jackie. One former Scottish international says it is a

:22:05. > :22:10.strange decision that Scottish Rugby union has made a announcing a head

:22:10. > :22:17.coach that won't take charge for 12 months. Vern Cotter is currently in

:22:17. > :22:21.charge of Clermon. He will be until next time next year.

:22:21. > :22:25.You could call it forward planning, but the fact that he won't take over

:22:25. > :22:33.the reins at Scotland for another year, is that good for the game and

:22:33. > :22:37.the team? One man who wore the shirt 23 times and is now a coach believes

:22:37. > :22:41.a similar decision in other sports would be frowned upon. If this

:22:41. > :22:47.happened in football, people would be up in arms. It is good to have

:22:47. > :22:51.him, that's not to buy him out of his contract seems strange. Two

:22:52. > :23:00.years before the World Cup, we got a chance of producing something, but

:23:00. > :23:06.Tony give him a year. It seems very difficult. This is Vern Cotter, a

:23:06. > :23:13.51-year-old New Zealand man who led Clermon to the final of the Heineken

:23:13. > :23:19.Cup. The present team don't see anything. I think we are in a good

:23:19. > :23:23.place. We had a relatively successful Six Nations and there's

:23:23. > :23:28.much to do on the tour. The management staff are great at the

:23:28. > :23:33.moment. He will have input over the next year and I'm sure we will see

:23:33. > :23:37.the way he wants us to play. From what I have heard, he has taken a

:23:37. > :23:45.lot of superstars and made them a strong team at Clermon. It is

:23:45. > :23:51.positive. As Scotland prepare in Perthshire, Scott Johnson will

:23:51. > :23:55.continue as interim head coach. There is 14 months to go until the

:23:55. > :23:59.Commonwealth Games, but qualification times and distances

:24:00. > :24:05.are flowing in thick and fast from Scots and's athletes. 25 have made

:24:05. > :24:10.the standard. That is in contrast to their track and field counterparts

:24:10. > :24:20.in England where the standards are higher. The director of coaching

:24:20. > :24:22.

:24:22. > :24:24.thinks it is an exercise in English An eighth place for the Scot in...

:24:25. > :24:30.Competing for his American University, James MacLachlan jumps

:24:30. > :24:37.is weighed to the standard with Scotland's second best ever

:24:37. > :24:43.performance. They are just too on the roll of honour so far. The 25

:24:43. > :24:51.athletes that have made the qualifying are these people going up

:24:51. > :24:55.the screen. Looking at the calibre of the athletes, I would have been

:24:55. > :25:05.disappointed if they had not qualified at this stage. They glide

:25:05. > :25:06.

:25:06. > :25:10.doing what the programme says they Qualifies for team Scotland at the

:25:10. > :25:13.London Marathon, but many English rivals trailing in their wake are

:25:13. > :25:21.finding their team standards impossibly high. The English

:25:21. > :25:27.standards? They could have the standards as they like. I think it

:25:27. > :25:31.is good PR for them. We are happy that our standards are equitable.

:25:31. > :25:35.What we need to see is good performance. The man in charge can

:25:35. > :25:45.relax for the moment. The prospect of Glasgow never far from his

:25:45. > :25:55.

:25:55. > :26:00.cloud around and rain. This is the picture today. Just poking up
