:00:29. > :00:37.Catholic boarding school grows. Police say they are investigating

:00:37. > :00:43.new allegations. Years of real hell, horrible. That is with me all the

:00:44. > :00:51.time. Also tonight, the turmoil at Ibrox grows.

:00:51. > :00:54.The chairman Walter Smith quits as the battle for Rangers intensifies.

:00:54. > :01:04.Sleepless nights for thousands of students and their nearest and

:01:04. > :01:08.

:01:08. > :01:13.dearest. From local hero to the doctor, Peter

:01:13. > :01:15.Capaldi's Germany to become the latest incarnation of the time

:01:15. > :01:20.traveller. No thoughts of quitting despite a

:01:20. > :01:24.serious illness. Darren Fletcher city will be back playing for club

:01:24. > :01:29.and country. Police say they have received

:01:29. > :01:35.further claims of abuse at the hands of monks at the former Fort Augustus

:01:35. > :01:39.Abbey School in the Highlands. They will be liaising with other law

:01:39. > :01:47.enforcement agencies in other parts of the UK and abroad. It follows a

:01:47. > :01:50.BBC Scotland documentary last week into abuse at the school.

:01:50. > :01:56.It is 20 years since this Catholic boarding school in the Highlands

:01:56. > :02:00.close that door is but following last week's investigation alleging

:02:00. > :02:06.widespread physical and sexual abuse by the monks that granite, Police

:02:06. > :02:09.Scotland are investigating it. They have received new allegations in the

:02:09. > :02:19.last few days and in a last few days and then statements statement

:02:19. > :02:25.

:02:25. > :02:31.Bishop of Aberdeen became the first senior member of the Catholic

:02:31. > :02:40.hierarchy to apologise for the abuse. All that can be done for the

:02:40. > :02:46.victims will be done. Boys at the prep school in East Lothian also

:02:46. > :02:50.suffered horrific abuse with survivors saying that promises by

:02:50. > :02:59.the church now to open its files relating to allegations over 50

:02:59. > :03:05.years is not enough. Years of real hell, horrible. That is with me all

:03:05. > :03:11.the time, so the church has to do something. They have set up this

:03:11. > :03:20.audit process. Am I a footnote on a page to satisfy real insurance

:03:20. > :03:24.company? It is about the public image. Retired academic Alan Draper

:03:24. > :03:28.violated abuse cases among the clergy 50 years ago and says it is

:03:28. > :03:34.becoming increasingly vital the church appoints an independent

:03:34. > :03:39.investigator. They have to do it otherwise there will be this

:03:39. > :03:45.approach with more allegations coming to the fore and it is

:03:45. > :03:51.alienating people. They are saying, enough to stop whatever the result

:03:52. > :03:57.of the police investigation and disclosure of church files, many

:03:57. > :04:01.people say they are now prepared to take legal action for damages.

:04:01. > :04:05.For the turmoil at Rangers Football Club tonight with news that chairman

:04:05. > :04:12.Walter Smith has resigned. It follows a period of bitter

:04:12. > :04:19.infighting in the boardroom and a weekend exits from the league cup.

:04:19. > :04:26.Why is Walter Smith going? Quite simply, he has had enough of the

:04:26. > :04:31.boardroom battles and infighting. This is a man who read the club to

:04:31. > :04:35.numerous titles and has only been the chairman for two months, brought

:04:35. > :04:40.back into the boardroom to try to bring some stability when Charles

:04:40. > :04:46.Green was the chief executive. It is not executive that Walter Smith has

:04:46. > :04:51.gone just a few days after Charles Green retiring as a paid

:04:51. > :04:57.consultant. It is understood they do not see eye to eye and Walter Smith

:04:57. > :05:01.opposed Charles Green's be calm and felt isolated on the board. He has

:05:01. > :05:07.felt he cannot work under those conditions and said he has to go.

:05:07. > :05:14.What is the chance of a return at some point in the future? He may

:05:14. > :05:17.come back at a later date depending on which it gets control of Rangers.

:05:17. > :05:25.They may want to have Walter Smith back with them whereas another group

:05:26. > :05:31.may feel it is time to move on. have does this leave Rangers?

:05:31. > :05:37.Gordon Smith was saying, they half two groups battling for control.

:05:37. > :05:39.There is not one person or one group in control. It is run by different

:05:39. > :05:49.groups of institutional investors with some of them battling for

:05:49. > :05:50.

:05:50. > :05:55.control. Fans are looking for some kind of clarity. We could get some

:05:55. > :06:00.kind of statement or clarity at an extraordinary general meeting

:06:00. > :06:03.planned for sometime late September, but the fans are looking for answers

:06:03. > :06:10.and with everything that has happened over the last couple of

:06:10. > :06:15.years, only a fool would predict what happens next.

:06:15. > :06:23.You are watching Reporting Scotland, still to come. How Edinburgh's

:06:23. > :06:27.newest quire is turning complaining into an artform. The Scotland

:06:27. > :06:32.skipper Darren Fletcher says he will be back playing at the highest level

:06:32. > :06:37.again and never thought about quitting despite absence because of

:06:37. > :06:43.surgery due to a serious bowel condition. The Golden wave of

:06:43. > :06:50.Scottish swimming. No medals but the top talents say that is all they are

:06:50. > :06:54.chasing at Glasgow 2014. The waiting is nearly over for

:06:54. > :07:00.thousands of school pupils and their families. The exam results are due

:07:00. > :07:06.out tomorrow morning. Jamie McIvor has been at the exams hotline where

:07:06. > :07:10.they are preparing for a busy day. This is the place to call tomorrow

:07:10. > :07:17.if you do not get the results you are expecting, whether that is good

:07:17. > :07:24.or bad news. 150,000 students across Scotland getting better results

:07:24. > :07:31.including the last standard grade results. Just how many callers are

:07:32. > :07:37.you expecting to the helpline? What sort of things can be advisors help

:07:37. > :07:42.with? They are here to help young people who perhaps did not get the

:07:42. > :07:47.grades they are looking for. That will not just necessarily be bad

:07:47. > :07:55.marks but better marks than the expected? A number of young people

:07:55. > :07:59.find themselves getting different or even better results. They could be

:07:59. > :08:04.looking at different courses or different institutions, and

:08:04. > :08:08.alternatively options like modern apprenticeships. Thank you. The

:08:08. > :08:14.helpline will be open from eight o'clock tomorrow morning and more

:08:14. > :08:19.students will be getting exam results the traditional way, but

:08:19. > :08:22.nearly 40,000 have opted to receive an e-mail or text message instead

:08:22. > :08:27.and they should be getting them before nine o'clock tomorrow

:08:27. > :08:32.morning. Police in Glasgow say they have found the body of a woman who

:08:32. > :08:39.they believed to be the 44-year-old who went missing a week ago.

:08:39. > :08:44.Lucia Piacentini was last seen at her home in the Cathcart area of the

:08:44. > :08:48.city. Police say they do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

:08:48. > :08:52.The Law Society of Scotland is calling for Holyrood and Westminster

:08:52. > :08:59.to publish legal advice about an independent Scotland's EU

:08:59. > :09:04.membership. They say there's the for certainty. The organisation says

:09:04. > :09:12.Hollywood must spell out what happened if negotiations cannot be

:09:12. > :09:15.concluded quickly will stop let's round up other stories from across

:09:15. > :09:18.the country. More than 80 people have applied for

:09:18. > :09:21.teaching jobs in Aberdeen following the city council's offer of up to

:09:21. > :09:25.5000 to try and attract new teachers to the city. But officials

:09:25. > :09:28.say it's unlikely any will be in place for the start of the new

:09:28. > :09:31.school term to cope with staffing shortages.

:09:31. > :09:34.A number of operations have been cancelled in Orkney after a burst

:09:34. > :09:39.water pipe flooded a theatre at Kirkwall's Balfour Hospital. It's

:09:39. > :09:42.hoped the facility will be back up and running later in the week.

:09:42. > :09:45.Approval has been given to Falkirk Council's plans to attract new

:09:45. > :09:55.businesses to the area, which it's hoped could create 6000 jobs. Public

:09:55. > :09:57.

:09:57. > :10:00.cash will be used to try and bring in more private investment.

:10:00. > :10:08.Falkirk is the beating heart of the petrochemical sector so that is one

:10:08. > :10:12.sector that will benefit. Retail, the business sector, to those,

:10:12. > :10:15.economic activity will be enhanced. A tourism campaign to promote the

:10:15. > :10:18.Hebridean islands has been launched. Visit Scotland aims to capitalise on

:10:18. > :10:28.the BBC's Hebrides: Islands on the Edge series and boost visitor

:10:28. > :10:28.

:10:28. > :10:31.numbers in the area this autumn. Four kittens found in an air

:10:31. > :10:34.conditioning unit in Aberdeenshire have been rescued by the Scottish

:10:34. > :10:36.SPS said. The kittens were dehydrated and are being treated for

:10:37. > :10:46.dry eyes. And there's more from your area, and

:10:46. > :10:50.all the latest news, 24 hours a day on BBC Scotland's website.

:10:50. > :10:58.Don't all rush to look at the curtains at once! As a Glasgow MP,

:10:58. > :11:04.Mohamed Salah Mohammed Sarwar had just over 50,000 constituents. After

:11:04. > :11:14.being sworn in as Governor of Punjab in Pakistan, he is responsible for

:11:14. > :11:14.

:11:14. > :11:19.around 92 million people. This is Mohammed Sarwar being sworn

:11:19. > :11:27.into his new job as Governor of Punjab, home to more than half of

:11:27. > :11:33.Pakistan's population. I believe I served the people of Glasgow and

:11:33. > :11:39.Scotland with passion and dedication and commitment. No, I believe the

:11:40. > :11:45.experience I have gained in local government and education, that

:11:45. > :11:50.experience can benefit the people of Punjab and the people of Pakistan.

:11:51. > :11:58.Mohammed Sarwar was born in pin jab but spent most of his life in

:11:58. > :12:03.Scotland. He became Breton's first Muslim MP. He went on to represent

:12:03. > :12:12.this part of Glasgow for the next 13 years before he stepped down from

:12:12. > :12:20.Parliament in 2010. Elliott, he was involved in the campaign to elect

:12:20. > :12:25.the Prime Minister but there were allegations he wanted the job.

:12:25. > :12:33.People make sacrifices for the party over the last 20 years. Many of

:12:33. > :12:37.those were very much interested in the governorship of the province,

:12:37. > :12:44.and at the moment although there is a resentment in the party, no one

:12:44. > :12:48.will speak publicly because he is very powerful. It is said there are

:12:49. > :12:52.7 million people who have never been to school in Pakistan and Mohammed

:12:52. > :13:01.Sarwar says it will be his book is to get 1 million of them in

:13:01. > :13:08.education every year. From the spin doctor to Doctor Who. Glasgow born

:13:08. > :13:15.Peter Goldie has been elected as the next proprietor of the TARDIS. --

:13:15. > :13:18.Peter Capaldi. The 55-year-old said he was a lifelong fan of Doctor Who

:13:18. > :13:23.and even wrote to the Radio Times about the Daleks when he was a

:13:23. > :13:30.teenager. For Doctor Who fans, it was the

:13:30. > :13:39.event of the year. Please welcome the 12th Doctor Who, a hero for a

:13:39. > :13:46.whole generation. It is... Peter Capaldi! A lifelong fan of the show,

:13:46. > :13:51.Peter Capaldi said Easy Crew was almost impossible to keep. It is so

:13:51. > :13:56.wonderful not to keep the secret any longer. But it has been fantastic in

:13:56. > :14:00.its own way. So many wonderful things have happened. For a while, I

:14:00. > :14:03.could not tell my daughter, who would be looking on the internet and

:14:04. > :14:09.discovering people were saying, so-and-so should be Doctor Who, and

:14:09. > :14:19.she was upset no one ever said me. When Peter Capaldi made his acting

:14:19. > :14:22.

:14:22. > :14:27.debut in the 1983 film, Local Hero. It is just like the model. From

:14:27. > :14:33.there, he has made his name on stage and screen including an Oscar, but

:14:33. > :14:40.most notably as Malcolm Tucker in BBC drama The Thick Of It. I have

:14:40. > :14:45.got more on my plate than a spinster at a wedding. There have been --

:14:45. > :14:52.there has been mixed reaction. Generally very positive from the

:14:52. > :14:59.older fans but some of the younger kids have a bit of trepidation about

:14:59. > :15:03.these old man coming in. I do not like the new doctor. I want Matt to

:15:03. > :15:11.come back. It is going to be exciting. It is different than

:15:11. > :15:17.usual. I think he will be good. I hope he has a different TARDIS.

:15:17. > :15:21.the moment the Doctor Who dolls are Matt Smith and Tom Baker but come

:15:21. > :15:26.Christmas Day when we get a first glimpse of the new Time Lord, they

:15:26. > :15:34.will be stocking these shelves with Peter Capaldi.

:15:34. > :15:40.Another male Doctor? Is signed sexist? Just a third of science

:15:40. > :15:43.undergraduates are female and only 9% of professors. Now a professor at

:15:43. > :15:51.Edinburgh University is launching a project called A Chemical Imbalance,

:15:51. > :15:56.using lessons from history to call for equality.

:15:56. > :16:01.In 1870, Edinburgh University witnessed a riot. The reason? This

:16:01. > :16:06.woman wanted to be a scientist. riots kicked off when Sofia and six

:16:06. > :16:11.of her friends, collectively known as the Edinburgh Seven, wanted to

:16:11. > :16:17.take the exams to study for medicine and were not allowed. The men did

:16:17. > :16:25.not want them to do it. But a riot was not the end. Three years later,

:16:25. > :16:29.a professor flatly refused to lecture female students. He did not

:16:29. > :16:33.want to give two lectures. After all, you could not have men and

:16:33. > :16:40.women sitting together. And by the standards of the day, he was

:16:40. > :16:45.enlightened. He taught Indian and Chinese students, provided they were

:16:45. > :16:49.male. But things have changed since then, haven't they? When I was

:16:49. > :16:54.inducted as president and given my medallion, a man from the audience

:16:54. > :16:57.came up to me and told me that the Royal Society of Chemistry had made

:16:57. > :17:02.me their president because as a woman I should have been at home

:17:03. > :17:09.rigging up my children. One in three science undergraduates is female but

:17:09. > :17:17.that drops to less than one in ten professors. Visitors to the A

:17:17. > :17:22.Chemical Imbalance website will see a book, a film. Rae we want to tell

:17:22. > :17:27.everyone it is not difficult to allow everyone to have access to

:17:27. > :17:34.being a brilliant scientific academic. Sides has a huge part to

:17:34. > :17:39.play in solving global challenges. -- science. We need everybody to buy

:17:39. > :17:43.into that, to be able to contribute to finding the solution. At the

:17:43. > :17:47.current rate, it will be 70 years before there is a gender balance,

:17:47. > :17:54.that this project's message is that science cannot afford to turn its

:17:54. > :18:01.back on women any longer. And before the watershed, to! The

:18:01. > :18:04.sport. Scotland captain Darren Fletcher

:18:04. > :18:09.says he fully believes he will be back playing at the highest level

:18:09. > :18:13.again and insist he never thought of quitting football. That is despite

:18:13. > :18:17.surgery and time out of the game because of a serious bowel

:18:17. > :18:23.condition. Today the Manchester United and fielder was meeting and

:18:23. > :18:27.inspiring new intake at the SFA's regional football schools.

:18:27. > :18:32.Darren Fletcher back at Hampden, although not in a playing capacity

:18:32. > :18:37.just yet. The Scotland captain had a bowel operation at the start of this

:18:37. > :18:45.year in a bid to ease the condition that forced him to take a break from

:18:45. > :18:49.football two years ago. The Low I am still in the hands of the surgeons.

:18:49. > :18:53.I have not started training yet. I am waiting for the surgeon to give

:18:53. > :19:01.me the go-ahead. Hopefully it will not be too far away in the too

:19:01. > :19:08.distant future. If it means a few extra weeks to get myself right then

:19:08. > :19:12.so be it. COMMENTATOR: Fletcher! The Manchester United midfielder

:19:12. > :19:18.says getting back to doing that excites him, although he admits at

:19:18. > :19:20.times it has been a hard struggle coping with his illness. It has been

:19:20. > :19:25.very frustrating but I have struggled for three years knowing

:19:25. > :19:29.that hopefully it is going to come to an end and I can get playing

:19:29. > :19:33.football to the level that I expect to be playing at and want to be

:19:33. > :19:40.playing at. It has never been an issue to give up. I have been

:19:41. > :19:44.through some tough times. Fletcher is not putting a timescale on his

:19:44. > :19:49.return but this month's friendly international against England at

:19:49. > :19:53.Wembley comes too soon. Celtic have closed a section of

:19:53. > :19:57.their ground for safety reasons. Section 111 is home to a group of

:19:57. > :20:01.fans known as the Green Brigade and in the past two weeks the club has

:20:01. > :20:06.warned of concerns of overcrowding, blocking aisles and ignoring safety

:20:06. > :20:09.officials. Fans in the section will now be offered a refund or given a

:20:09. > :20:13.chance to relocate. The Green Brigade say they are seeking legal

:20:13. > :20:18.advice. It was a disappointing World

:20:18. > :20:22.Championships for two of Scotland's top swimmers. Hannah Miley and

:20:23. > :20:28.Michael Jamieson say only gold at next year's Commonwealth Games will

:20:28. > :20:32.do. Both finished fifth in the finals at Barcelona. But promising

:20:32. > :20:41.results from two youngsters have a former champion describing the C

:20:41. > :20:51.Rask Scotland's Golden wave. -- describing this era as Scotland's

:20:51. > :20:58.

:20:58. > :21:05.The Olympic park setting was stunning, and so was some of the

:21:05. > :21:10.swimming. Silver medallist two-year zygote Hannah Miley could only

:21:10. > :21:19.manage fifth in the 400s individual medley, the same as Michael

:21:19. > :21:26.Jamieson. They want Commonwealth gold next summer. We will hopefully

:21:26. > :21:31.bring home the medals. The main medal, that is the only one I will

:21:31. > :21:39.accept next year. I have maybe four years or so left in this sport and I

:21:39. > :21:46.want medals every year. There were two Scottish records. So our major

:21:46. > :21:52.medals coming at the Commonwealth? Absolutely. I do not think this

:21:52. > :21:58.little Golden wave of swimmers coming through is an accident. We

:21:58. > :22:03.are now doing it on purpose. It is not a flash in the pan, not an

:22:03. > :22:06.accident. So Scotland's best are heading home from Barcelona with no

:22:06. > :22:12.silverware but with less than a year until the Commonwealth Games, there

:22:12. > :22:17.were enough good performances here to suggest that the medal tally at

:22:17. > :22:19.Glasgow 2014 will look very different.

:22:20. > :22:27.Edinburgh's new disquiet makes its public debut this week and it is

:22:27. > :22:35.turning complaining into an artform. -- Edinburgh's newest choir.

:22:35. > :22:39.Edinburgh Complaints Choir allows people to air their gripes.

:22:39. > :22:44.Some people sing the praises of their city. Not the Edinburgh

:22:44. > :22:52.Complaints Choir, who have a lot to get off their chests. This number is

:22:52. > :22:57.about dog mess. Everyone has a need to complain. It is a fun project. It

:22:57. > :23:04.is not just people sitting around being miserable. Commissioned by the

:23:05. > :23:11.Edinburgh arts best, this follows a loud and proud history. Choirs have

:23:11. > :23:18.sprung up all over the world. heard about complaints choirs before

:23:18. > :23:23.and I thought it was a nice way to positively do something about things

:23:24. > :23:26.that are annoying in Edinburgh. there is no shortage of annoying

:23:26. > :23:33.things about Edinburgh, not least the disruption caused by the tram

:23:33. > :23:39.works. I thought it was a good way to become involved in the festival,

:23:39. > :23:42.rather than the festival being put upon you, which sometimes when you

:23:42. > :23:52.are in Edinburgh you feel you are not really part of it, so it was

:23:52. > :23:52.

:23:52. > :24:02.good to become involved in it rather than just money at it. -- rather

:24:02. > :24:05.

:24:05. > :24:13.about the festival which they will be performing out and about for the

:24:13. > :24:23.next few weeks. Not much to sing about in the

:24:23. > :24:24.

:24:25. > :24:29.across most of the country to date but not across the Borders and the

:24:29. > :24:33.Lothians. We saw around 30 millimetres of rainfall in 12

:24:33. > :24:39.hours. Elsewhere, though, generally dry and the rain is clearing the

:24:39. > :24:45.way. So this evening, late sunshine for many parts of the country. The
