:00:16. > :00:20.Tonight, on Reporting Scotland: The South Lanarkshire killings - was it

:00:20. > :00:26.a business deal gone wrong? We're live at Meadowhall Farm where

:00:26. > :00:34.investigations continue. Now the exam results are out, why

:00:34. > :00:38.are home university places so scarce for Scottish students? I live at

:00:38. > :00:45.Aberdeen Airport were the first type of helicopter has taken to disguise

:00:45. > :00:52.after they were grounded because two pitched into the North Sea. I will

:00:52. > :00:56.be at Scotland's other Fringe Festival. Festival by the sea.

:00:56. > :00:58.play is under way for Andy Murray, who has taken the first set at the

:00:58. > :01:02.Montreal Masters. A Lanarkshire farmhouse remains

:01:02. > :01:05.sealed off tonight as a major police investigation continues into a fatal

:01:05. > :01:08.shooting that left two men dead and another injured. Officers are at

:01:08. > :01:17.Meadowhead Farm near East Kilbride, where yesterday a father was shot

:01:17. > :01:23.dead, his son was wounded and a third man also died. Laura Maxwell

:01:23. > :01:28.reports. There has been a heavy police

:01:28. > :01:34.presence at Meadowhead Farm today. Armed police were called in just

:01:34. > :01:39.after ATM, by the time they arrived 59-year-old Peter Thompson was dead.

:01:39. > :01:45.-- mania M. Peter Thompson owned Meadowhead Farm outside East

:01:45. > :01:49.Kilbride. His body was found at the scene. His son, John, managed to get

:01:49. > :01:52.away from the farm. He had been shot and was taken to the village of

:01:52. > :01:56.Auldhouse where he was treated for a leg wounds before being taken to

:01:56. > :02:02.hospital. Firearm officers searched the area and a third man, Robert

:02:03. > :02:07.McCormick, was found dead in a car on the farm. Police turned their

:02:07. > :02:10.attention to his home in Clarkston. Robert McCormick was a registered

:02:10. > :02:19.gun owner. Neighbours say he had lived here for six years and kept

:02:19. > :02:24.himself to himself. We were not prepared for these events. To rapid

:02:24. > :02:32.response vehicles and police officers came out with their rifles.

:02:32. > :02:38.He kept himself to himself. He had one or two friends, you very rarely

:02:38. > :02:40.saw him. He used to have a motorbike but that is all we knew. It is

:02:40. > :02:46.understood Peter Thompson and Robert Mugabe caddy business relationship.

:02:46. > :02:49.Meadowhead Farm is a large equestrian centre. It has been

:02:49. > :02:54.suggested a disputed landfill site was the source of a disagreement

:02:54. > :03:03.between them. -- Robert McCormick. Very few details have been

:03:03. > :03:10.confirmed. This is a community which remains in shock and mourning.

:03:10. > :03:14.Laura is still at Meadowhead Farm. What are local people saying?

:03:14. > :03:17.village of Auldhouse is literally two Minutes Drive from the farm. The

:03:17. > :03:20.police attention has been here today, but when I went down to

:03:20. > :03:25.Auldhouse I managed to speak to some people who have been involved in

:03:25. > :03:30.proceedings yesterday. John Thompson, who was shot in the leg,

:03:30. > :03:33.decided to go there. Auldhouse was the first place he went. There is a

:03:33. > :03:37.construction site in the village and he knew there would be a first aider

:03:37. > :03:41.there. I spoke to the site manager who helped him and he said he is

:03:41. > :03:46.used to dealing with the cuts and bruises of a building site, he had

:03:46. > :03:50.never seen anything like this, but he did give him some help. Peter

:03:50. > :03:56.Thompson was very well-known locally, in the local pub, Auldhouse

:03:56. > :04:00.Arms, it stayed closed yesterday as a respect. The landlady said she

:04:00. > :04:03.could not believe this had happened. Peter had been in at the weekend,

:04:03. > :04:09.sitting having a drink in the corner and they could not believe he would

:04:09. > :04:14.not be back. A record number of Scottish

:04:14. > :04:18.teenagers have a place at university. But there's disquiet

:04:18. > :04:21.over those who missed out on their chosen place and need to use the

:04:21. > :04:23.clearing system. But with hundreds of places still available at home

:04:23. > :04:26.universities, Scottish students are barred from applying as quota

:04:26. > :04:30.numbers means they're being kept open for fee-paying students from

:04:30. > :04:38.other parts of the UK. Our education correspondent Jamie McIvor is at the

:04:38. > :04:41.helpline. Jamie, a frustrating state of affairs for many families.

:04:41. > :04:45.imagine it must be for many families in Scotland if you have narrowly

:04:45. > :04:49.missed out on a place at a local university. A relatively small

:04:49. > :04:54.number of places are available in the clearing system for Scottish

:04:54. > :04:57.students. If you go online, you will find hundreds of courses at Scottish

:04:57. > :05:03.universities that still accept clearing applications from students

:05:03. > :05:09.living in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Why is this? University say

:05:09. > :05:13.it is rather like comparing apples with pairs. The essential issue is

:05:13. > :05:17.the fact that Scottish students do not pay tuition fees. There is a

:05:17. > :05:20.ring fenced and number of Scottish university places for Scottish

:05:20. > :05:27.Giddens and these places are paid for by the Scottish Government, so

:05:27. > :05:31.essentially the numbers are capped. -- Scottish students. There is no

:05:31. > :05:37.cap for students from the rest of the UK. Universities argue that

:05:37. > :05:40.there are still more places overall for Scottish students than ever

:05:40. > :05:44.before and they are adamant this is not the case of offering a place to

:05:44. > :05:48.someone from England, Wales or Northern Ireland at the expense of

:05:48. > :05:56.someone from Scotland. We have got a protected number of places for

:05:56. > :06:04.Scottish students. No one else can compete for those places. We offer a

:06:04. > :06:09.wide experience to qualified students. -- from Scotland. We like

:06:09. > :06:13.to take students from the rest of the UK, but they come outside those

:06:14. > :06:23.cap numbers, they are not competing for the same places that Scottish

:06:23. > :06:27.Giddens. White what is the best advice for someone who has missed

:06:27. > :06:32.out on a place at university? panic. There are plenty of

:06:32. > :06:37.opportunity there for people who have missed out on a place. Consider

:06:37. > :06:40.a place at college, there are plenty of courses that would allow you to

:06:40. > :06:45.progress onto an advanced university course and leave with the

:06:45. > :06:49.qualification similar to what he had applied for. Other opportunities

:06:49. > :06:53.could be gaining work experience, looking for modern apprenticeships,

:06:53. > :06:58.a great way to learn and earn on. Give us a call if you have any

:06:59. > :07:01.questions. We have trained advisers happy to help. It is worth making

:07:01. > :07:10.the point, there are some places available through the clearing

:07:10. > :07:20.system in Scotland. The helpline is open until 8pm tonight. Again, open

:07:20. > :07:24.

:07:24. > :07:27.every day until next week. A group of oil executives have flown

:07:27. > :07:37.to a platform where they have been briefing workers of the safety of

:07:37. > :07:41.

:07:41. > :07:45.the Super Puma. That's behind me is an EC 225 Super Puma aircraft. It is

:07:45. > :07:49.not the one that was in flight today because that is still offshore and

:07:49. > :07:55.it will be overnight, while managers and senior teams talk to workers

:07:55. > :07:58.about the safety of the aircraft, but for about the path nine months

:07:59. > :08:02.that is the longest journey that one of these has been able to take from

:08:02. > :08:08.the hangar to the tarmac, and then back again, but after lots of

:08:08. > :08:13.testing, it has now finally been given the authority to fly and that

:08:13. > :08:17.will make a huge difference to the offshore industry.

:08:17. > :08:23.It was after two ditching is last year, this one in May and another in

:08:23. > :08:28.October, that the North Sea's fleet of Super Puma EC 225 helicopters

:08:28. > :08:32.were grounded. It has put huge pressure is right operators, with

:08:32. > :08:37.fewer seats available to fly people on and off shore. -- oil rig

:08:38. > :08:41.operators. Engineers spent months trying to work out the cause. It was

:08:41. > :08:45.eventually put down to cracks in the main gearbox, and after extra safety

:08:45. > :08:54.measures were put in place, the authorities finally gave the green

:08:54. > :08:57.light to fly. They are ready to go. There is a commercial element to it.

:08:57. > :09:04.As far as I understand, there is no actual passengers or workforce

:09:04. > :09:10.involved in this flight. It is symbolic. Today's flight was

:09:10. > :09:14.low-key, taking only senior managers from CHC and Total. It is understood

:09:14. > :09:18.they have been giving presentations to workers, many of whom at the

:09:18. > :09:28.Helen Port were actually relaxed about the return to service. --

:09:28. > :09:28.

:09:28. > :09:37.Teleport. Any vehicle will trash or ditch, no-one is nervous. They can

:09:37. > :09:41.do 1 million tests. We are sure they have done a great job. Other

:09:41. > :09:45.helicopter operators say it will be later in the year before the flight

:09:45. > :09:55.passengers indeed aircraft. CHC says it plans more flight in the days and

:09:55. > :09:58.

:09:58. > :10:01.weeks to calm. -- more flights. Still to come: Why the owner of this

:10:01. > :10:05.vintage car is putting his cherished vehicle up for sale.

:10:05. > :10:08.In sport, it's a night of live action as Andy Murray is on court in

:10:08. > :10:12.Montreal and Celtic are about to kick-off against Elfsborg in a bid

:10:12. > :10:15.to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League. And another

:10:15. > :10:18.club with European dreams - St Johnstone, are getting ready for a

:10:18. > :10:24.huge night at McDiarmid Park, and loving their success at the start of

:10:24. > :10:26.the season. A motorcyclist has died after

:10:26. > :10:30.crashing during a race that the Knockhill Racing Circuit in Fife

:10:30. > :10:34.will stop 30-year-old Matthew Polanski died in hospital after

:10:34. > :10:38.being injured in an accident on Sunday. His family paid tribute to

:10:38. > :10:48.him, seeing he lived every day to the pool. Another man is in a

:10:48. > :10:51.critical condition following an accident at the same circuit today.

:10:51. > :10:54.A tribunal has been told that a cancer surgeon at Aberdeen Royal

:10:54. > :10:57.Infirmary lied to a patient, leaving her thinking he had removed a brain

:10:57. > :11:01.tumour when he hadn't. Neurosurgeon Emmanuel Labram convinced the woman

:11:01. > :11:04.not to seek further treatment and by the time she did, the cancer was

:11:04. > :11:08.inoperable. Mr Labram is accused of giving the patient's husband a vivid

:11:08. > :11:11.description of how he had removed the tumour, when in fact he recorded

:11:11. > :11:14.in his notes that only biopsies had been taken. Labram, of Maryculter,

:11:14. > :11:19.Aberdeen, faces 11 allegations relating to his conduct. The hearing

:11:19. > :11:22.continues. As a society, we are becoming

:11:22. > :11:24.hostile to children playing outside - that's the concern of one

:11:24. > :11:28.children's charity. Today marks National Playday and Play Scotland

:11:28. > :11:38.say we need to stop being intolerant of everyday noise such as school

:11:38. > :11:39.

:11:39. > :11:44.playgrounds and children playing in the street. Suzanne Allan reports.

:11:44. > :11:51.Together member a time when there was no computers are Internet? -- do

:11:51. > :11:55.you remember. A lot of today's children do not. This morning,

:11:55. > :12:01.children all over the country got to try their hand at outdoor playing.

:12:01. > :12:04.Many of the 500 children here really gets left outside to the street to

:12:04. > :12:12.enjoy themselves. Part of that is parental worries over traffic,

:12:12. > :12:16.stranger danger, fascination over computer games and because we are

:12:16. > :12:23.becoming intolerant of the noise kids make. People are worried about

:12:23. > :12:26.traffic, stranger danger and lack of opportunities. I think people are

:12:26. > :12:33.hostile, almost aggressive to children or young people out and

:12:33. > :12:36.about playing. This is Glasgow Green and today is the 26 National

:12:36. > :12:41.Playday. There are bikes over there. There is the science centre

:12:41. > :12:48.up there. Children and parents we have spoken to said they are loving

:12:48. > :12:58.these outdoor activities. We have been playing with friends, getting

:12:58. > :12:59.

:12:59. > :13:03.to colour in. We go to the park most days. My children have scooters.

:13:03. > :13:09.am scared encase someone tries to talk to her, fighting will stop this

:13:09. > :13:19.might seem obvious. Of course children love to play. But that

:13:19. > :13:20.

:13:20. > :13:24.point of National Playday is the importance of outdoor play. That is

:13:24. > :13:28.get some other stories from across Scotland.

:13:28. > :13:31.CCTV images of a man police want to trace in connection with indecent

:13:31. > :13:34.assaults on two men in Aberdeen have been released. The incidents

:13:34. > :13:38.happened between the 18th and 20th of June within retail premises on

:13:38. > :13:42.Union Street, and men aged 35 and 38 were targeted. The man police would

:13:42. > :13:43.like to speak to is described as of Asian appearance and aged between 30

:13:43. > :13:46.and 40. Police investigating the

:13:46. > :13:49.disappearance of a Russian student are making a renewed appeal for

:13:49. > :13:52.information. Yulia Solodyankina was last seen on CCTV at Glasgow's

:13:52. > :13:54.Buchanan Street bus station on June seven. The 22-year-old was studying

:13:54. > :14:01.physics at Edinburgh University. Police say nothing about her

:14:01. > :14:04.disappearance is suspicious. Further trials are to be carried out

:14:04. > :14:06.to find the best way of removing graffiti from the front of Aberdeen

:14:06. > :14:10.City Council's historic Marischal College headquarters. The building,

:14:10. > :14:13.which became the local authority's new base in 2011, was daubed with

:14:13. > :14:16.graffiti in June. Earlier tests on a small section were successful.

:14:16. > :14:18.However, further tests first thing this morning did not give the

:14:18. > :14:21.anticipated result and more trials will be carried out.

:14:21. > :14:25.A people-led campaign which helped Dundee reach the short list for UK

:14:25. > :14:28.City of Culture 2017 wants the public to help with the next stage

:14:28. > :14:32.of the bid. "We Dundee" is encouraging people to outline what

:14:32. > :14:35.they want to see in the city in four years' time. Dundee is competing

:14:35. > :14:41.against Hull, Leicester and Swansea Bay for the title. The winner will

:14:41. > :14:44.be announced in November. A student has climbed all of

:14:44. > :14:47.Scotland's Munros in just 98days. Kevin Woods from Bearsden reached

:14:47. > :14:50.his 228th summit on Ben Hope in Sutherland this afternoon,

:14:50. > :14:52.completing a challenge that started in Mull at the beginning of May.

:14:52. > :14:58.Speaking from Scotland's most northerly Munro, the 21-year-old

:14:58. > :15:02.couldn't quite believe his mission had been accomplished.

:15:02. > :15:12.And there are more stories from your area, and all the latest news 24

:15:12. > :15:15.

:15:15. > :15:19.hours a day, on BBC Scotland's website. You know what it is like,

:15:20. > :15:24.you have been together for years, but eventually you come to an

:15:24. > :15:31.emotional parting of the ways. That is what happened to Tommy Bryce and

:15:31. > :15:37.is very special car. Ealing Clark offered consolation. The car is just

:15:37. > :15:42.passed 84 years old and the driver is just two months short, but he has

:15:42. > :15:52.decided it is time for a lady who is a bit easier to handle. If you watch

:15:52. > :15:57.

:15:57. > :16:00.me turning, there is no past steering and it is awkward. Who is

:16:00. > :16:02.your ideal buyer? Someone who would look after it. I am getting

:16:02. > :16:12.emotional! Someone who would look after it. It is important that

:16:12. > :16:19.

:16:19. > :16:22.people see these things. So, it may be my last chance for a spin and to

:16:22. > :16:24.hear how Tommy enjoyed leading off the Monte Carlo rally from Glasgow

:16:24. > :16:34.earlier this year. There was 15,000 people there. I could not believe

:16:34. > :16:37.

:16:37. > :16:47.it. I will get something moderate. Only 50 years old! That this is

:16:47. > :16:50.

:16:50. > :16:57.moderate as you will go? Yes.With his beloved car put on the market,

:16:57. > :17:06.we decided to enlist sales advice. Low mileage, well looked after,

:17:06. > :17:14.ensured, fully roadworthy, it has road tax, what a car! I have been

:17:14. > :17:24.all over with it and I have had a lot of fun. I will never regret it.

:17:24. > :17:24.

:17:24. > :17:29.Tommy Bryce. Sport now. Thank you. Some action right now, the Scottish

:17:29. > :17:36.champions Celtic are in Sweden and have just kicked off against

:17:37. > :17:43.Elfsburg in the Champions League third qualifying round. The kick-off

:17:43. > :17:47.was at 6:45pm. The score is currently 0-0. Celtic have added

:17:47. > :17:52.three from the first leg. Neil Lennon said that his side do not

:17:52. > :17:59.have to win, I draw will be enough, but they are determined to win. Do

:17:59. > :18:05.not turn over, that match is live on BBC Two Scotland and on radio

:18:05. > :18:09.Scotland. Getting ready for European action, St Johnstone are chasing a

:18:09. > :18:14.Europa League play-off spot tomorrow night. They are at home to Minsk

:18:14. > :18:19.having won the first leg and they are determined to continue their

:18:19. > :18:26.100% winning record this year. Morale is high and they are enjoying

:18:26. > :18:31.their well-deserved time in the spotlight. They are winning in

:18:31. > :18:39.Europe and they are winning in Scotland and there is a new hero.

:18:39. > :18:43.Praise for this striker who has been called up for Scotland under 21 is

:18:43. > :18:49.against England. What about all this attention? I am loving it. In terms

:18:49. > :18:53.of the start of the season, it could not have gone any better. As a club,

:18:53. > :18:59.it is great to be involved in European football and to get that

:18:59. > :19:04.recognition. It is great. This board is working hard to stay strong and

:19:04. > :19:12.fit to contest two campaigns, both in Europe and at home in the

:19:12. > :19:16.Scottish Premiership. It is a small squad to cope with the demands.

:19:16. > :19:21.are probably four players down from last season. We have had to cut the

:19:21. > :19:27.budget and the budget will determine how many more players I can bring

:19:27. > :19:31.in. At the minute, I cannot see much change, but I would like one more

:19:31. > :19:37.in. Hopefully the run in Europe will give us extra money and we will be

:19:37. > :19:41.able to buy more. It is not the norm for St Johnstone to grab the

:19:41. > :19:49.limelight. Callum Davies and has savoured international attention.

:19:49. > :19:56.Thank you. I think we enjoy it. It is great, we do not get about much

:19:56. > :20:01.publicity. It is nice to be a bit further forward. I am not quite

:20:01. > :20:09.sure, if we get a big club in the next round, we want our chance to

:20:09. > :20:13.get to the group stages. Andy Murray has been in action in Montreal in

:20:14. > :20:17.his first match since winning Wimbledon. He made a promising start

:20:17. > :20:24.against the Spanish contender in the Rogers cup, but he has not had

:20:24. > :20:29.things all his own way. His path into the tennis Hall of Fame is

:20:29. > :20:35.assured, but will he be rusty at all in his first match after that

:20:35. > :20:42.triumph at Wimbledon? The answer was no. His opponent did take the first

:20:42. > :20:49.game, but Andy Murray soon broke his serve. The lead turned into 4-1, and

:20:49. > :20:57.he broke the Spaniard's serve again. However he showed why he is in the

:20:57. > :21:00.world top 40, by recovering a break and pulling back to 4-3. Roused,

:21:00. > :21:06.Marie raised his level and closed out the first set in under 15

:21:06. > :21:12.minutes. It was a different story in the second set in which the world

:21:12. > :21:18.number two found himself 4-1 down. From there, he launched a spirited

:21:18. > :21:24.fightback and a few moments ago, the set was back level at five games

:21:24. > :21:30.all. Just keep you up-to-date, the scorer in the second set is 6-5 to

:21:30. > :21:34.the Spanish contender. News of a retirement from international rugby.

:21:34. > :21:39.Rory Lawson has been advised by medical experts to quit the game

:21:39. > :21:46.with immediate effect because of a chronic wrist injury. He was capped

:21:46. > :21:50.31 times in his 14 year career. Good luck to him. Thank you. Edinburgh

:21:50. > :21:57.Festival fringe may be the world's biggest arts festival but it has

:21:59. > :22:06.Berwick and offers all the buzz of the main festival without the

:22:06. > :22:10.crowds. They certainly know how to draw a crowd at the Edinburgh

:22:10. > :22:17.Festival Fringe, but sometimes amidst all the hustle and bustle you

:22:17. > :22:23.wish you were somewhere else entirely. Like here, on the beach at

:22:23. > :22:27.North Berwick, home to Fringe By The Sea. It began six years ago as an

:22:27. > :22:33.extension of the main fringe and it has grown into one of the best-known

:22:33. > :22:38.small festivals in the country. is a glorious place, so why should

:22:38. > :22:43.we not have some of the fun and excitement. That was the real idea.

:22:43. > :22:48.We thought that by the time a few visitors have had their two days of

:22:48. > :22:53.mayhem in Edinburgh, why would they not want to come down to a beautiful

:22:53. > :22:57.place like this and enjoy some of the top-quality entertainment?

:22:57. > :23:03.not just audiences who find the whole experience our breath of fresh

:23:03. > :23:08.air. It is lovely to get away, much as I enjoy Edinburgh, this is much

:23:08. > :23:14.more my kind of thing. Relaxing with fish and chips and ice cream by the

:23:14. > :23:21.sea. Its closeness its mutts bigger sister festival means there is no

:23:21. > :23:25.shortage of shows happy to play at both. I love enrol, but I love to

:23:25. > :23:33.play gigs elsewhere and I like to travel with the show. The weather

:23:33. > :23:43.has been brilliant. With just a week to cram it in, small is definitely

:23:43. > :23:49.

:23:49. > :23:54.There will be some sunshine, and this is Scotland, but it means you'd

:23:54. > :24:00.better pack your brolly! You will certainly have needed an umbrella

:24:00. > :24:04.this morning because it was rather wet and that was all thanks to this

:24:04. > :24:10.area of rain showing up on the satellite picture. Through the day,

:24:10. > :24:16.it has tended to fade away, 12-macro showers. Though they are at the

:24:16. > :24:21.moment. There are stretching down to the north-west. Generally for most

:24:21. > :24:26.of us, it will be a dry evening. Here is the map from 7pm, lovely

:24:26. > :24:31.late evening sunshine, the showers will fade away and it will be a dry

:24:31. > :24:34.night. We could see some mist and fog in the Glens and like last night

:24:35. > :24:39.it will be chilly in the countryside. The towns and cities

:24:39. > :24:43.will hold up into double digits. Tomorrow morning is dry and bright

:24:43. > :24:53.and we will lose mist and fog and there will be early morning sunshine

:24:53. > :24:59.

:24:59. > :25:02.in the West and heading towards lunchtime, one or two showers in

:25:02. > :25:04.eastern parts and then it will cloud over in the West as a weather front

:25:04. > :25:06.approaches. Why the afternoon, temperatures could be up to the high

:25:06. > :25:11.teens. In the West it will be cooler. Through parts of Hoechst --

:25:11. > :25:15.Perthshire, some sunshine in between the showers. The Highlands will

:25:15. > :25:19.cloud over and the role these sunshine in Orkney and Shetland.

:25:19. > :25:24.Heading towards tomorrow night, the weather front will work in from the

:25:24. > :25:28.West and we will see an increasingly southerly breeze. Heading overnight

:25:28. > :25:34.into Friday, there is the weather front working east across the

:25:34. > :25:37.country, a fairly damp night, but by Friday morning, it has moved towards

:25:38. > :25:42.the North Sea, lingering across the northern eyes for a time and behind

:25:42. > :25:52.it, sunshine and showers and that Breeze taking the edge of the

:25:52. > :25:59.

:25:59. > :26:01.temperatures. Into the weekend, some sunny spells and also a number of

:26:01. > :26:03.showers and temperatures close to average into the high teens. Thank

:26:03. > :26:05.you. Now a reminder of the main news. Lanarkshire farmhouse remained

:26:05. > :26:08.sealed off as a police investigation continues into a fatal shooting that

:26:17. > :26:22.the new governor of the Bank of England has signalled that record
