:00:14. > :00:18.Tonight, on Reporting Scotland. Hanging in the balance.

:00:19. > :00:22.Grangemouth's owners say their workforce will find out what future

:00:23. > :00:25.they see for the plant tomorrow morning.

:00:26. > :00:31.ScottishPower is handed a multi-million pound fine for

:00:32. > :00:35.misleading its customers. Exercising the mind - Why making the

:00:36. > :00:50.grade at school might be about more than just studying. It wakes me up

:00:51. > :00:54.and gets my brain going. Gymnastics has helped me to focus and not be

:00:55. > :00:56.distracted and you need that in school.

:00:57. > :01:06.Also tonight, we're live from Celtic Park. It is a massive night of

:01:07. > :01:08.champions league action. The future of the Grangemouth

:01:09. > :01:11.refinery and petrochemical plant hangs in the balance tonight. The

:01:12. > :01:15.plant's owners met in London today to discuss their next move and say

:01:16. > :01:18.they will tell the workforce the outcome of that meeting tomorrow

:01:19. > :01:21.morning. Meanwhile the Scottish and UK governments have held talks today

:01:22. > :01:28.about the dispute. Our business correspondent David Henderson

:01:29. > :01:33.reports. It is Scotland's biggest industrial

:01:34. > :01:39.site and it is producing nothing but how long can it remain that way?

:01:40. > :01:44.Last night, union officials showed off these letters, evidence of the

:01:45. > :01:49.better dispute. They are from workers who rejected plans to

:01:50. > :01:54.wholesale changes to pay and pensions. Managers today insisted

:01:55. > :01:58.there's alternative plan. It is losing 10 million a month and it is

:01:59. > :02:03.structurally running out of its raw materials. The survival plan would

:02:04. > :02:12.give us the opportunity to secure investment. So who is calling the

:02:13. > :02:16.shots? This man has the controlling stake in the company which owns

:02:17. > :02:20.Grangemouth and he has held talks today with senior management, but

:02:21. > :02:29.others have also been talking about a possible change of ownership. We

:02:30. > :02:35.are exploring all options about other interests for other parties to

:02:36. > :02:40.acquire and operate the site. Who the buyer might be is unclear but

:02:41. > :02:47.with workers and management in deadlock, the union has backed the

:02:48. > :02:55.move. They need to listen to the Scottish government now seeing there

:02:56. > :02:58.is a plan B and if you do not want responsibility, step aside and

:02:59. > :03:04.someone else will take it. This refinery produces most of

:03:05. > :03:11.Scotland's fuel sold today contingency plans were announced to

:03:12. > :03:15.keep negative impact to a minimum. The best interests are served by

:03:16. > :03:21.getting back to the table and veal is no other way of resolving this

:03:22. > :03:25.the break and securing the future. At 10am tomorrow, the company will

:03:26. > :03:31.tell staff what they plan to do with the site. Will the restart

:03:32. > :03:36.production, will be closed, does Grangemouth have a future? There's a

:03:37. > :03:39.lot at stake for the workers and the country.

:03:40. > :03:42.The Scottish and UK governments have been in contact today about the

:03:43. > :03:45.situation at Grangemouth. Our political correspondent Tim Reid's

:03:46. > :03:48.in Westminster for us tonight. Tim is there a sense that, as this

:03:49. > :03:58.dispute intensifies, Grangemouth is too big to fail? There's absolutely

:03:59. > :04:02.no question whatsoever as to the importance of Grangemouth's future

:04:03. > :04:07.and the protection of the jobs but also protecting the massive economic

:04:08. > :04:12.and print it has on Scotland and the wider UK, which is why they were

:04:13. > :04:17.keen to get both sides negotiating in the first place, and stressing

:04:18. > :04:26.that what has to happen should happen now. John Swinney seeing it

:04:27. > :04:29.as though the number one priority. The implications for closure are

:04:30. > :04:34.unthinkable both politically and economically. The Westminster

:04:35. > :04:37.Government are in charge of energy policy and will have to deal with

:04:38. > :04:43.any potential closure and its aftermath, and the Scottish

:04:44. > :04:51.Government have made a significant part of their financial case for

:04:52. > :04:53.independence on oil. Have the politicians been given any

:04:54. > :04:59.indication of the announcement tomorrow? I think we are completely

:05:00. > :05:06.in the dark as are we. That has caused frustration, and also

:05:07. > :05:12.frustration that they have not managed to get the sides are in the

:05:13. > :05:16.negotiation table again. There are contingency plans to ensure

:05:17. > :05:21.continuation of supply but they are also stressing that they have their

:05:22. > :05:22.fingers crossed those are not necessary.

:05:23. > :05:25.There will be more on the Grangemouth dispute on Newsnight

:05:26. > :05:27.Scotland over on BBC Two Scotland tonight at 11 o'clock.

:05:28. > :05:30.ScottishPower has warned that its prices are likely to rise in the

:05:31. > :05:33.next few weeks, following announcements from its rivals.

:05:34. > :05:37.Meanwhile the company has been fined 8.5 million pound after an

:05:38. > :05:40.investigation by OFGEM. The regulator says the company provided

:05:41. > :05:44.misleading information when it was trying to persuade people to switch

:05:45. > :05:49.providers. Our business and economy editor, Douglas Fraser, joins me.

:05:50. > :05:53.First,the fine: what exactly was ScottishPower doing wrong? The fine

:05:54. > :05:55.is for a failure to manage doorstep and telesales agents, who used

:05:56. > :06:02.misleading information in their sales pitches, between 2009 and last

:06:03. > :06:06.year. OFGEM says this fine, of ?8.5m, is a clear signal to energy

:06:07. > :06:10.suppliers of what happens when they break the conditions of their

:06:11. > :06:18.licence to supply energy. ScottishPower has apologised

:06:19. > :06:20."unreservedly". It has stopped doorstep selling. Of that fine, ?7.5

:06:21. > :06:25.million is going to vulnerable customers - those likely to be at

:06:26. > :06:36.risk of fuel poverty. Nearly 150,000 people will receive a payment of

:06:37. > :06:39.about ?50. There's also to be a ?1m customer compensation fund for those

:06:40. > :06:45.who were mis-sold to. You're not going to get rich on that - it could

:06:46. > :06:51.be worth up to ?50 per household. Scottish poet is having to repay

:06:52. > :06:58.?8.5 million to its customers. -- Power. Its energy salespeople were

:06:59. > :07:04.not providing reliable information and making accurate comparisons and

:07:05. > :07:10.the company did not have controls in place at management level to guard

:07:11. > :07:13.against that. We are writing to all customers are affected and

:07:14. > :07:16.apologising and making sure we pay any compensation to those affected.

:07:17. > :07:25.ScottishPower also warning of a price rise to come? Intervention

:07:26. > :07:30.from a former prime minister. The biggest US rising prices and three

:07:31. > :07:37.of the big six have announced gas and electricity increasing by up to

:07:38. > :07:42.11%. They say they are facing the same cost pressures as rivals and it

:07:43. > :07:47.is likely prices will go up by the end of the year. They are facing

:07:48. > :07:53.political splits from any incoming Labour government of a price freeze

:07:54. > :07:56.and we have from John Major that there should be a windfall tax on

:07:57. > :08:01.these energy companies making too much money. The battle is getting

:08:02. > :08:03.stepped up reflecting the public anger about it.

:08:04. > :08:06.You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the

:08:07. > :08:09.programme. How Scottish scientists think the

:08:10. > :08:15.loss of atmosphere on Mars could have implications for dealing with

:08:16. > :08:18.climate change on Earth. All the sport comes live ahead of a

:08:19. > :08:22.big night of Champions League football as Celtic face Ajax. The

:08:23. > :08:28.thoughts of a former Celtic Assistant Manager to come. Also

:08:29. > :08:31.tonight, Sir Alex Ferguson makes some interesting revelations, and

:08:32. > :08:37.five uncapped players have been named in the Scotland Rugby training

:08:38. > :08:40.squad ahead of the Autumn Tests. Talking of sport, new research

:08:41. > :08:43.suggests that exercise improves teenagers' academic performance. And

:08:44. > :08:47.according to the study led by Dundee University, the more kids exercise,

:08:48. > :08:56.the better their grades. Our health correspondent Eleanor Bradford

:08:57. > :09:00.reports. PE classes are not what they were

:09:01. > :09:11.when I was at school and probably for that reason, the kids here love

:09:12. > :09:17.sport. I do dancing, gymnastics, basketball. I have basketball on a

:09:18. > :09:27.Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I do is football. It wakes me up and

:09:28. > :09:31.gets my brain going. Gymnastics has helped me to focus and not be

:09:32. > :09:36.distracted by things and you need that in school. A study led by

:09:37. > :09:41.Dundee University found that exercise improved more than just

:09:42. > :09:46.physical health. The searchers found that for every 15 minutes children

:09:47. > :09:50.spent exercising, they scored an extra quarter of a grade in the

:09:51. > :09:56.classroom and they speculate that if youngsters that the recommended

:09:57. > :10:03.our's exercise every day, they could smash home a whole extra grades.

:10:04. > :10:07.There is a strong correlation between physical activity and data

:10:08. > :10:13.not -- educational outcomes at the age of 11, and there a long-term

:10:14. > :10:18.relations. Food for thought for policymakers as extra hours of the

:10:19. > :10:20.day spent in PE may not be at the expense of exam grades.

:10:21. > :10:24.A murder trial has heard a woman whose body was found in a toilet at

:10:25. > :10:28.the SECC, in Glasgow, had suffered fractures to facial bones and her

:10:29. > :10:31.skull, with all the bones on the left side of her face effectively

:10:32. > :10:34.shattered. Pathologist Dr Marjorie Turner told the court the injuries

:10:35. > :10:38.were consistent with being struck with a fire extinguisher. Clive

:10:39. > :10:40.Carter admits killing 42-year-old Khanokporn Satjawat but denies

:10:41. > :10:44.murdering her by repeatedly hitting her with a fire extinguisher at the

:10:45. > :10:50.Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow last November.

:10:51. > :10:53.Other stories from across Scotland this Tuesday.

:10:54. > :10:57.Plans for the regeneration of the Kishorn fabrication yard in Wester

:10:58. > :11:01.Ross have been approved by Highland Council. The developers hope the

:11:02. > :11:04.site, used in the '70s and '80s to build North Sea oil platforms, will

:11:05. > :11:08.become a focal point for the emerging marine renewables energy

:11:09. > :11:14.sector, possibly creating 2500 jobs. The historic town hall in

:11:15. > :11:21.Campbeltown is to be restored. It has been a lot of hard work in the

:11:22. > :11:24.gestation, around three years of liaising with the various

:11:25. > :11:33.authorities, so it represents a satisfactory culmination of three

:11:34. > :11:36.years of hard work. The historic town hall in Campbeltown is to be

:11:37. > :11:40.restored. It's to receive a million pounds worth of lottery money. There

:11:41. > :11:43.had been concerns over the future of the 18th century building.

:11:44. > :11:46.A former Liberal Democrat MSP has taken his seat in the Lords. Jeremy

:11:47. > :11:49.Purvis was the MSP for Tweeddale, Ettrick and Lauderdale. He will sit

:11:50. > :11:52.as Lord Purvis of Tweed. A final call's gone out for

:11:53. > :11:55.nominations for the 2013 Robert Burns Humanitarian Award which

:11:56. > :11:58.closes at the end of next week. Last year's went posthumously to Khalil

:11:59. > :12:01.Dale, the Dumfries-based Red Cross worker assassinated in Pakistan.

:12:02. > :12:03.Other previous winners include Guy Willoughby, chief executive of the

:12:04. > :12:06.mine clearing charity, the Halo Trust and Linda Norgrove, the

:12:07. > :12:14.Scottish aid worker kidnapped and killed in Afghanistan.

:12:15. > :12:17.A Scottish festival has had to cancel its headline act after a

:12:18. > :12:20.group of Syrian performers was refused entry to the UK. Al Kindi

:12:21. > :12:24.and the Whirling Dervishes of Damascus was due to open the Sound

:12:25. > :12:28.Festival in Aberdeen on Friday but the group was refused entry visas by

:12:29. > :12:36.the Home Office who said it had doubts the musicians would leave the

:12:37. > :12:40.UK after performing. And there are more stories from your

:12:41. > :12:46.area - and all the latest news, 24 hours a day on BBC Scotland's

:12:47. > :12:48.website. Scottish based researchers think

:12:49. > :12:54.they've found the reason why the planet Mars lost its atmosphere: it

:12:55. > :12:57.turned to stone. Their findings could have implications for dealing

:12:58. > :13:04.with climate change on Earth. Here's our science correspondent Kenneth

:13:05. > :13:09.Macdonald. Cold, dry and wet the vanishingly

:13:10. > :13:15.thin atmosphere but it was not always this way. Millions of years

:13:16. > :13:21.ago, the atmosphere was rich in carbon dioxide but Scottish

:13:22. > :13:29.researchers think the carbon dioxide turned to stone. It gets drawn from

:13:30. > :13:33.the atmosphere and locked in rock, so while we have observed that on

:13:34. > :13:42.Earth, it is the first sighting on Mars. First, you have to find a bit

:13:43. > :13:46.of the planet. Tiny pieces can get blasted from the planet and take

:13:47. > :13:53.millions of years to reach Earth as meteorites. This is believed to have

:13:54. > :14:01.hit a dog and vaporised it. What we have phoned and said less is the

:14:02. > :14:05.carbonate mineral which shows we have actually got a sister

:14:06. > :14:14.Montmartre which has removed carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. --

:14:15. > :14:24.system on Mars. By scanning this we are finding out what happened on

:14:25. > :14:28.Mars millions of years ago. It has implications for how we look at

:14:29. > :14:32.storing carbon on Earth and how we deal with global warming and the

:14:33. > :14:40.removal of carbon dioxide from Earth. You can get the carbon

:14:41. > :14:45.dioxide back out by adding acid but it is how it got into rocks that is

:14:46. > :14:49.insisting scientists here on earth. A man's appeared in court charged in

:14:50. > :14:51.connection with a fatal crash in Aberdeenshire that left a woman dead

:14:52. > :14:55.and two others injured. The collision happened on the B977 Dyce

:14:56. > :14:57.to Fintray Road yesterday afternoon. Edward Shaw, who's 50, from

:14:58. > :15:00.Inverurie, appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court charged with causing

:15:01. > :15:07.death by dangerous driving and driving with excess alcohol.

:15:08. > :15:10.The Queen's Baton Relay is continuing its journey around the

:15:11. > :15:13.seventy nations and territories of the Commonwealth, ahead of the Games

:15:14. > :15:19.in Glasgow next year. The Asia section of the relay has taken the

:15:20. > :15:23.baton to Bangladesh. Record breaker Mark Beaumont is known for cycling

:15:24. > :15:25.but this week he took to the streets of Dhaka, a city of thirteen million

:15:26. > :15:43.people. This is how Bangladesh welcomes the

:15:44. > :15:48.bat on. There are clear roads. That doesn't often happen here. The

:15:49. > :15:51.Queen's Baton Relay is getting a helping hand to the streets but with

:15:52. > :15:59.13 million people in Dhaka traffic is a big goblin. It is a global

:16:00. > :16:05.issue but here a group of cyclists are trying to find a local solution.

:16:06. > :16:09.Fed up of never knowing when he would get to the end of his

:16:10. > :16:16.journeys, this organiser wants to show car uses an odd sanity. We are

:16:17. > :16:23.trying to get the population to take up cycling. They have used social

:16:24. > :16:30.media, a yokel -- local way to get people using local transport. Let me

:16:31. > :16:37.stay in the front. Do not pick-up too much speed. I thought it was

:16:38. > :16:46.going well until I got told off for speeding. Slow, slow! Old habits die

:16:47. > :16:57.hard. Do you cycled to work or is it just with the group? People say I am

:16:58. > :17:06.female and should not ride. Will that change, will it be usual for

:17:07. > :17:13.men and women to cycle? Males and females are cycling together but in

:17:14. > :17:22.the office maybe people are not taking it so much. It will be normal

:17:23. > :17:25.in future. In the group there were all ages but you can see the passion

:17:26. > :17:30.and interest and people saying this is the fastest and quickest way to

:17:31. > :17:34.get around and the more they do it, the safer it gets. This is a story

:17:35. > :17:38.of people taking control and initiative to make their lives

:17:39. > :17:44.better. I love the solidarity the cyclists have shown and as the

:17:45. > :17:51.Queens were done travels the Commonwealth, I think I will find

:17:52. > :17:54.more stories like this. You can get more on the baton and its journey on

:17:55. > :18:06.our website -- that's bbc.co.uk/queensbatonrelay.

:18:07. > :18:09.A big night for Celtic. Celtic Park behind me is gearing up for a big

:18:10. > :18:13.night of Champions League action, as Celtic take on Ajax. It seems both

:18:14. > :18:17.sides are out to avoid losing this one, with thoughts of trying to

:18:18. > :18:21.progress from Group H. In a moment we'll get the thoughts of this man,

:18:22. > :18:24.but around two and half thousand Ajax fans have made the trip to

:18:25. > :18:38.Glasgow and as Kheredine Idesanne discovered they're a noisy bunch.

:18:39. > :18:47.In good voice and good numbers, it seems the visitors from Amsterdam

:18:48. > :18:56.enjoyed the Celtic experience. Great atmosphere, great supporters. We

:18:57. > :19:03.will win no. We will win all three. Celtic will be hoping for more of

:19:04. > :19:09.this. James Forrest's return could compensate for the loss of key

:19:10. > :19:17.players in a match which the club has to win. Neal will be looking at

:19:18. > :19:23.the game, a young Ajax side. They have not won away from home. I think

:19:24. > :19:27.it is a game Celtic have to get points from. After two defeats,

:19:28. > :19:35.Celtic prop up their Champions League group. The visiting manager

:19:36. > :19:46.says his side are clear underdogs. The level between both clubs is

:19:47. > :19:49.even. Playing at home now, the fans behind them, maybe they are

:19:50. > :19:58.favourites. Frank De Boer lost twice as a Rangers player in 2004. Both

:19:59. > :20:01.matches finished 1-0 to Celtic. They would happily take that tonight.

:20:02. > :20:06.Joining me now is former Celtic player and former Assistant Manager

:20:07. > :20:15.Murdo McLeod. Both teams want to avoid defeat. What can the match be

:20:16. > :20:19.like? It will be an open game. Ajax will be happy. Celtic have to go for

:20:20. > :20:28.the game and get the points. It is so important. Frank De Boer says

:20:29. > :20:34.there's not much between the sides. I agree. Good attacking sides. Ajax

:20:35. > :20:41.are suspect at the back, young back four. The special atmosphere can be

:20:42. > :20:46.created in the stadium but can it be an intimidating atmosphere, Neil

:20:47. > :20:54.Lennon says he wants it to be. It encourages the players. 60,000 fans

:20:55. > :20:59.singing and making a noise, they want to play in that kind of

:21:00. > :21:08.atmosphere. James Forrest is back. Yes, a big plus points tonight.

:21:09. > :21:18.Samaras has been great. The middle of the park is so important. The

:21:19. > :21:25.strength of the team... Prediction? Celtic have to winter night. I think

:21:26. > :21:33.they will win 2-1. Part of the commentary team tonight. The match

:21:34. > :21:38.is covered for you. There are also live text updates on line. The

:21:39. > :21:42.administrators looking after Hearts says they can now begin the process

:21:43. > :21:44.which could see the Tynecastle club coming out of administration.

:21:45. > :21:48.The administrators of Ukio Bankas, who control around 30 per cent of

:21:49. > :21:50.the club's shares, have given their go-ahead for a company voluntary

:21:51. > :21:52.arrangement process to begin. Meanwhile the appointment of

:21:53. > :21:55.administrators to Hearts' majority shareholder, UBIG, is expected to

:21:56. > :22:09.take place on Thursday, clearing the way for a CVA process to begin.

:22:10. > :22:17.Now, I look at what else has been happening in Scottish sports.

:22:18. > :22:21.Alex Ferguson has revealed he turns down the England manager job at

:22:22. > :22:28.Manchester United. He says he rejected the FA advances on two

:22:29. > :22:40.occasions. A great opportunity to relegate them. There was no way I

:22:41. > :22:45.could. Not in a million years. Scott Johnson has named a 41 man squad

:22:46. > :22:50.ahead of the autumn internationals playing Japan, South Africa and

:22:51. > :23:02.Australia. I am trying to increase depth. I have said this from last

:23:03. > :23:06.year, I want us to be the best 30. All of the competition starts now.

:23:07. > :23:12.Five uncapped players are among the squad including Mark Bennetts,

:23:13. > :23:27.Johnny Gray and Chris Passaro. It is massively important. I am not sure.

:23:28. > :23:30.I will be doing my best. The son of Rod Stewart has been named in the

:23:31. > :23:37.Great Britain Under-21 ice hockey squad for their world Championships

:23:38. > :23:46.team played in Dumfries. More sports stories plus the latest news 24
