:00:00. > :00:18.power cuts to thousands of homes. Now we can join the news

:00:19. > :00:24.Tonight, on Reporting Scotland... The Unite union official at the

:00:25. > :00:29.centre of the Grangemouth dispute resigns from his job.

:00:30. > :00:34.The widow of a top Scottish peer calls for a change in the mental

:00:35. > :00:41.health laws. The Duchess of Hamilton says her husband was wrongly

:00:42. > :00:46.sectioned. He rushed to me and I said, it is all right. You are here

:00:47. > :00:53.voluntarily, you can come home if you want to. And then if I said,

:00:54. > :00:58.known, he cant, he has been sectioned for 28 days.

:00:59. > :01:02.And also tonight... The trial of a security guard

:01:03. > :01:03.accused of murdering a delegate at a conference in Glasgow draws to a

:01:04. > :01:07.close. And we catch up with adventurer Mark

:01:08. > :01:11.Beaumont, as he follows the Queen's Baton relay around the Commonwealth.

:01:12. > :01:16.The union official at the centre of the Grangemouth dispute has resigned

:01:17. > :01:19.from his job at the facility. Stephen Deans had already been

:01:20. > :01:22.suspended by owner's Ineos over claims he used company time for

:01:23. > :01:26.union business. The Unite union previously voted for strike action

:01:27. > :01:29.over his treatment, which led to last week's shutdown of the plant.

:01:30. > :01:36.Here is our business correspondent, David Henderson. The man in the

:01:37. > :01:43.middle of the storm over Grangemouth. Stephen Deans Was the

:01:44. > :01:49.convenient for the Unite union at the plant. In the past week, the

:01:50. > :01:57.future of the planet and thousands of jobs where endowed. The owners

:01:58. > :02:02.had accused him of doing union work on company time and take action

:02:03. > :02:07.against them. The union threatened strike action and the owners

:02:08. > :02:20.reaction was to close down the plant. The union accused the owners

:02:21. > :02:26.of obsessing over Stephen Deans. They have to sit down and listen.

:02:27. > :02:28.Unite would not sit down and listen. All they wanted to do was talk about

:02:29. > :02:33.Stephen deepens. Stephen Deans two.

:02:34. > :02:49.And David joins me now. Stephen Stephen Denes was also at the centre

:02:50. > :02:59.of the Unite union at law or first the selection process for the Labour

:03:00. > :03:05.Party seat in Falkirk. In the end, his own paymasters have pushed him.

:03:06. > :03:11.They should accept that ultimately they were responsible. Tonight,

:03:12. > :03:17.union members are sending a round of talks. The union leader is out of a

:03:18. > :03:22.job just days after their own jobs were saved. Stephen is very much at

:03:23. > :03:32.the centre of this, but his resignation does not necessarily

:03:33. > :03:43.mean that the site can move on? Stephen Deans was left adrift by the

:03:44. > :03:51.situation last week. His advice was that the members should strike and

:03:52. > :03:57.since then, the union have had to accept a huge amount of company

:03:58. > :04:02.terms, such as notes strike agreements and massive changes to

:04:03. > :04:07.the pay and conditions. Unite have suffered a huge blow to their

:04:08. > :04:16.influence at the plant and Stephen Deans, by the end, was pretty

:04:17. > :04:20.marginal. Many workers at Grangemouth was the struggling to

:04:21. > :04:24.keep up with events. They have had to accept huge changes to the terms

:04:25. > :04:30.and conditions. The departure of Stephen Deans underlines that it is

:04:31. > :04:33.old change the. Shortly before his death in 2010,

:04:34. > :04:36.Scotland's most senior aristocrat, the Duke of Hamilton, was detained

:04:37. > :04:39.against his will in a psychiatric hospital. He was suffering from

:04:40. > :04:42.dementia. His widow believes the traumatic experience hastened his

:04:43. > :04:46.death. She is now calling for mental health laws to be changed, so that

:04:47. > :04:57.an individual cannot be sectioned on the orders of just two people. Four

:04:58. > :05:01.years ago, the Duchess and shook of Hamilton went to a psychiatric

:05:02. > :05:07.hospital under the impression that it would just be a tonight 's the

:05:08. > :05:13.foreign Egypt to check his medication. He was suffering from

:05:14. > :05:20.dementia, she could tear him calling. He sounded really upset. I

:05:21. > :05:26.could hear him calling. He rushed to me and I said, it is all right, you

:05:27. > :05:32.are here voluntarily, you could come home if you want to. A voice behind

:05:33. > :05:35.me said, no, he can, he has been sectioned for 28 days and may not

:05:36. > :05:42.get out after that. The judge would seek own beer of the opening of the

:05:43. > :05:47.Scottish Parliament and now he was sectioned and the Duchess only got

:05:48. > :05:54.him released on condition he means 24-hour care for him. If that is

:05:55. > :06:02.what is happening to the Duke of Hamilton, what chance has Joe Bloggs

:06:03. > :06:06.got? In Scotland, you can be forced to stay in hospital under the mental

:06:07. > :06:11.health act, but only if two specialists agree it is in your best

:06:12. > :06:18.interest. They should take into account the wishes of relatives and

:06:19. > :06:23.carers. The head of mental health watchdog says the law is good when

:06:24. > :06:26.properly followed. If you are detained under mental health

:06:27. > :06:29.legislation is that you are given the proper explanation as to why you

:06:30. > :06:36.are detained and what your rights are, such as the rate to appeal and

:06:37. > :06:41.the right to independent assessment. The law is being reviewed. The joke

:06:42. > :06:47.died a few months after his dramatic hospital stay. The reason for his

:06:48. > :06:50.admission was never changed. The jury in the trial of a man

:06:51. > :06:55.accused of murdering a conference delegate at the SECC in Glasgow has

:06:56. > :06:58.heard the closing speeches. The prosecution argues that Clive Carter

:06:59. > :07:02.is a cold-blooded man who has shown no remorse for the murder of the

:07:03. > :07:05.woman from Thailand. He admits the killing, but denies murder. His

:07:06. > :07:15.defence told the jury that culpable homicide should be the correct

:07:16. > :07:22.verdict. For the prosecution, they told the jury, Khanokporn Satjawat

:07:23. > :07:29.was a defenceless lady who was doing nothing more than going about her

:07:30. > :07:39.business, when she was attacked by a man being paid to make sure she was

:07:40. > :07:44.safe. Khanokporn Satjawat Was attending a conference on HIV at the

:07:45. > :07:50.SEC see in Glasgow. When she left, security guard Clive Carter

:07:51. > :07:53.bludgeoned her to death with the fire extinguisher. The advocate

:07:54. > :08:09.advocate depute said: the accused had failed to establish

:08:10. > :08:15.that a personality disorder had any beading on the attack and so, Clive

:08:16. > :08:31.Carter should be found guilty of murder. The defence started the

:08:32. > :08:36.delivery by saying that he should be accused of a diminished

:08:37. > :08:44.responsibility verdict. They said it was an impulsive act of violence for

:08:45. > :08:49.him to attack Khanokporn Satjawat. The defence added:

:08:50. > :08:57.he finished by saying that culpable homicide was not a lesser verdict,

:08:58. > :09:04.but is the correct verdict in this instance. The final deliberations

:09:05. > :09:06.will be done in the morning before the jury is sent out to do the date

:09:07. > :09:16.the verdict. -- deliberate. You are watching Reporting Scotland

:09:17. > :09:18.from the BBC. Still to come on the programme...

:09:19. > :09:21.The artists' inspiration that is now looking for a little help in return.

:09:22. > :09:24.In sport, Aberdeen are enjoying league and cup success, but manager

:09:25. > :09:27.Derek MacInnes warns everyone not to get carried away.

:09:28. > :09:30.And we meet up with the Scotland rugby league team, Their target is

:09:31. > :09:33.to make the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

:09:34. > :09:37.All that and much more sport coming soon.

:09:38. > :09:40.Two more cash machines have been targeted overnight by thieves, in

:09:41. > :09:45.the latest in a string of incidents in the North East. A Bank of

:09:46. > :09:48.Scotland machine in Inverurie and a Clydesdale ATM in Stonehaven were

:09:49. > :09:52.attacked within hours of one another. Our reporter Kevin Keane

:09:53. > :10:03.joins us now from Inverurie. What happened in this latest incident?

:10:04. > :10:09.The first one was at 3:40am in Stonehaven at the Clydesdale bank.

:10:10. > :10:18.That cash machine and just the few hours later, an attempt on the

:10:19. > :10:20.second in identical circumstances. Police and forensic scientists have

:10:21. > :10:26.been at the scene throughout the day, coming up for evidence to try

:10:27. > :10:33.and find close as to who is responsible for this. In both of

:10:34. > :10:41.these attempts, there was no money taken. Clearly, the cash machine has

:10:42. > :10:45.been out of action all day. And this follows a series of similar

:10:46. > :10:52.incidents in the North East over the past couple of months? Yes, half a

:10:53. > :11:05.dozen of them in the north-east over recent weeks and months. One end and

:11:06. > :11:08.very and in Aberdeen, for example. The police are saying they are

:11:09. > :11:12.keeping an open mind as regards a connection between all of these.

:11:13. > :11:16.They are speaking to colleagues in Merseyside, where there has also

:11:17. > :11:23.been a spate of similar incidents in recent months. Last week, there was

:11:24. > :11:29.a successful attempt on a cash machine in a post office in Moray

:11:30. > :11:35.and today a 26-year-old man has appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court

:11:36. > :11:38.accused with left over that incident.

:11:39. > :11:42.The brother of former gangland figure Tam McGraw has been found

:11:43. > :11:45.murdered at his home in the East End of Glasgow. The body of 55-year-old

:11:46. > :11:48.Francis McGraw was found at his flat in Hermiston Road in Springboig over

:11:49. > :11:52.the weekend. Police have said there is nothing to suggest his murder is

:11:53. > :11:55.linked to another murder 24 hours later in nearby Shettleston. Tam

:11:56. > :11:58.McGraw, known as the Licensee, was linked to murders and drug

:11:59. > :12:10.trafficking before his death in 2007, at the age 55, from a

:12:11. > :12:13.suspected heart attack. . Police in Glasgow are appealing for

:12:14. > :12:17.help to catch a rapist who attacked a woman as she walked home from a

:12:18. > :12:21.Halloween party in the early hours of Sunday morning. The 35-year year

:12:22. > :12:24.old was dragged into bushes in a car park in Bridge Street in the

:12:25. > :12:28.Gorbals. She was in fancy dress, wearing a bridal gown and veil. Her

:12:29. > :12:31.attacker is said to be white, with short dark hair, a pointed nose and

:12:32. > :12:41.fresh complexion. He was wearing dark clothes. The response from the

:12:42. > :12:45.public has been very good. I am very keen to speak to a couple who were

:12:46. > :13:01.walking nearby, who were also in fancy dress.

:13:02. > :13:04.A religious education teacher who remarked to his students that

:13:05. > :13:07."Hitler wasn't all bad", as he killed Jews, gays and disabled

:13:08. > :13:10.people, and made inappropriate remarks about Jimmy Savile has been

:13:11. > :13:13.banned from teaching. David McNally was a supply teacher at Kilwinning

:13:14. > :13:16.Academy in Ayrshire. In his submission to the General Teaching

:13:17. > :13:19.Council, Mr McNally accepted he had made the remarks, but that he was

:13:20. > :13:24.having a particularly bad day. . A man who killed his friend on the

:13:25. > :13:27.day he got out of prison has been jailed for more than five years.

:13:28. > :13:30.Robert Gruszka hit Robert Dudek over the head with a bottle. The men had

:13:31. > :13:33.been drinking with friends following Gruszka's release from jail, where

:13:34. > :13:36.he had served a sentence for shoplifting.

:13:37. > :13:38.One man died and three others were injured in three-vehicle crash in

:13:39. > :13:41.Dumfries and Galloway. The victim, who has been named as 78-year-old

:13:42. > :13:45.William Lupton from Creetown, was driving a car which was involved in

:13:46. > :13:48.a collision with two vans. It happened on the A75 at Skyreburn

:13:49. > :13:51.near Gatehouse shortly after half past six this morning.

:13:52. > :13:55.A man has suffered a serious head injury after being assaulted in

:13:56. > :13:58.Edinburgh early this morning. The 37-year-old was walking with his

:13:59. > :14:01.girlfriend in the Tollcross area of the City, when he was attacked by

:14:02. > :14:05.two men. Scotland is to have its own internet

:14:06. > :14:08.exchange point. Finance Secretary John Swinney says a giant router

:14:09. > :14:12.will be located in Edinburgh, adding to the current exchange points in

:14:13. > :14:15.London, Leeds and Manchester. People living alongside the River

:14:16. > :14:19.Tay are to be asked how they think their homes can be best protected

:14:20. > :14:22.from flooding. The results of the research by a team at Stirling

:14:23. > :14:25.University will be shared with the Scottish government, to help shape

:14:26. > :14:28.future flood defence plans for the estuary.

:14:29. > :14:33.Kilmarnock is the worst town to live in in Scotland, according to a new

:14:34. > :14:36.book. The Alternative Guide to the UK has branded Kilmarnock a

:14:37. > :14:40."post-industrial wasteland". Critics have dismissed the book and claim

:14:41. > :14:45.that it is hugely insulting to the town's 45,000 residents.

:14:46. > :14:49.And there are more stories from your area - and all the latest news, 24

:14:50. > :14:54.hours a day on BBC Scotland's website.

:14:55. > :14:57.The Glasgow 2014 Queen's Baton Relay has arrived in Malaysia - the

:14:58. > :15:01.seventh country on its journey across the Commonwealth. Within the

:15:02. > :15:04.sprawling capital Kuala Lumpur with its glittering skyscrapers is a

:15:05. > :15:06.small village where, as adventurer Mark Beaumont discovered, the

:15:07. > :15:23.inhabitants are trying to hold onto their traditional way of life.

:15:24. > :15:32.It is a thoroughly modern and very fast growing city but in the heart

:15:33. > :15:38.of it is an area that remains pretty much unchanged. The name means

:15:39. > :15:42.little village and the first impressions are houses that have

:15:43. > :15:48.been here incredibly long surrounded by skyscrapers. This man is a senior

:15:49. > :15:54.member of the village council whose caretaking role as that of a village

:15:55. > :15:59.elder. In spite of the value of the land, he believes the village life

:16:00. > :16:06.is worth protecting. People know which other land where your family

:16:07. > :16:14.are from. We have tried to maintain the spirit. Today is a wedding day.

:16:15. > :16:28.I would not just be observing. They also invited me to help and guests

:16:29. > :16:35.to guests. Like this? This is for you. A sign of respect but not to

:16:36. > :16:44.her because she is younger than you. I think I got the hang of it. It is

:16:45. > :16:47.easy to see the closeness of the people here with invites extending

:16:48. > :16:56.to anyone who knows anyone at the party, not just family and friends.

:16:57. > :17:06.It means a lot of preparation. 100 kilos of rice and 100 chickens. I

:17:07. > :17:13.can see why you are in charge! On the surface, it looks like they

:17:14. > :17:19.are fighting to keep modern life and modern Malaysia out, but it is

:17:20. > :17:24.completely open to change but just not willing to do so at the cost of

:17:25. > :17:29.what is important, a sense of family and community. This village is

:17:30. > :17:36.really celebrating its sense of friendship and belonging. It shows

:17:37. > :17:45.the same values that underlying the entire Commonwealth.

:17:46. > :17:55.And for more from Mark Beaumont and the baton's journey round the

:17:56. > :17:58.Commonwealth, go to our website. Now for the sport. Good evening. The

:17:59. > :18:02.Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes says there's no prospect of anyone at the

:18:03. > :18:06.club getting carried away by their positive start to the season. The

:18:07. > :18:09.Dons are up to second in the Premiership and play Motherwell this

:18:10. > :18:12.week in the League Cup quarter final. But as Alasdair Lamont

:18:13. > :18:26.reports, they're determined to keep their feet on the ground.

:18:27. > :18:28.Aberdeen in front! That has been an increasingly common scenario

:18:29. > :18:36.recently saw with nearly any chance beyond fuelled euphoria will get to

:18:37. > :18:40.the heads of people in charge? It is nice to be where we are and be in

:18:41. > :18:45.the quarterfinal and be sitting second in the league. We cannot deny

:18:46. > :18:56.that that the minute but we are still aware of how rarely it is in

:18:57. > :19:01.the season. -- early. The plan is to take them to a higher place finish

:19:02. > :19:05.than in any of the previous format years but they are just two points

:19:06. > :19:10.better off than this time last season. You cannot get carried

:19:11. > :19:17.away. You have won a few games and people think you will finish high

:19:18. > :19:25.but anything can happen. We will keep on an even keel and keep

:19:26. > :19:29.working and do what we are doing. Maybe previous false dawns are also

:19:30. > :19:34.keeping them in check. A definite sense of optimism, cautious or

:19:35. > :19:38.otherwise at Aberdeen right now. Scotland are confident of making the

:19:39. > :19:41.Quarter Finals of the World Cup - they open their campaign in England

:19:42. > :19:44.tomorrow night! The sport in question is Rugby League with Tonga

:19:45. > :19:50.and Italy the other sides in Scotland's group. Now it's fair to

:19:51. > :19:53.say that Rugby League is a minority sport here and there are no

:19:54. > :19:59.professional teams. Our rugby reporter Phil Goodlad has been to

:20:00. > :20:07.the Scots training camp in Cumbria. Preparing for a shot at the big

:20:08. > :20:11.time. Rugby but not as we know it. Much better skill quality and Rugby

:20:12. > :20:17.Union I used to play a couple of games at the weekend but half a game

:20:18. > :20:20.of this I am knackered. It may not be as popular here as Rugby Union

:20:21. > :20:28.but those involved in rugby league wants to change that. It is

:20:29. > :20:35.frustrating but we are slowly making inroads into Scotland and fingers

:20:36. > :20:42.crossed that the end of this World Cup people will know more about it.

:20:43. > :20:48.Scotland has a Man of Steel to help. The captain has been voted best

:20:49. > :20:51.player in the UK, the Man of Steel, and the player who once played for

:20:52. > :20:57.England now wants to use his powers to help Scotland. We are looking to

:20:58. > :21:02.top this group and get to the quarterfinals and I think that is

:21:03. > :21:07.realistic. People might put us down and not back us but we have a group

:21:08. > :21:11.that believes in us. Scotland are ready for their assault on the Rugby

:21:12. > :21:16.league World Cup, aiming for the quarterfinals. When was the last

:21:17. > :21:18.time we heard that from any Scottish side.

:21:19. > :21:25.Now, time to take a look at what else is happening across Scottish

:21:26. > :21:31.sport. It was a smoky Hampden Park as

:21:32. > :21:37.Croatian fans set off layers at a World Cup qualifier. The SFA face

:21:38. > :21:42.disciplinary action for the breach of safety.

:21:43. > :21:46.Scotland's when in travel to Paul and what they are 100% record of

:21:47. > :21:54.wins intact in the World Cup qualifying campaign. We will just

:21:55. > :22:00.prepay for how they defend and attack. We know what they are going

:22:01. > :22:08.to do and work on what we want to improve. It is also important for us

:22:09. > :22:16.to rest and recover. The Glasgow Warriors scrum-half has

:22:17. > :22:21.been cited for a biting incident in Friday's match. He could be banned

:22:22. > :22:25.until the end of the year. Eilidh Child has been named

:22:26. > :22:35.Scotland's athlete of the year. She has had an outstanding season.

:22:36. > :22:43.Scotland have lost the first leg of their annual shindig challenge. The

:22:44. > :22:50.Irish one in Dublin. -- shinty. More sports stories plus all the

:22:51. > :22:57.latest news on the BBC sport website.

:22:58. > :23:02.A final piece of breaking news. Darren Fletcher will play for

:23:03. > :23:08.Manchester United's under 21 side tonight. He has a chronic bowel

:23:09. > :23:12.condition and has not played for the first team since 2012.

:23:13. > :23:15.Writer Margaret Atwood, Turner Prize winner Simon Starling and the

:23:16. > :23:18.National Theatre of Scotland are among those who've found space, time

:23:19. > :23:25.and inspiration in a unique artists' retreat in Argyll. 13 years on, Cove

:23:26. > :23:28.Park is keen to expand and looking to the 1300 artists, writers and

:23:29. > :23:30.performers who've used it, to help them. Our arts correspondent Pauline

:23:31. > :23:47.McLean reports. The famously provided shelter for

:23:48. > :23:52.the TV castaways. Today, the pods are home to a different sort of

:23:53. > :23:59.castaway, writers, artists and performers who wants space to create

:24:00. > :24:04.new work. Just like a scientist or in medicine, there are places which

:24:05. > :24:11.are hothouse for new ideas and there's a right to feel ought to do
