:00:00. > :00:00.weekend. That's all from us. Now the news
:00:00. > :00:23.where you are. Tonight on Reporting Scotland:
:00:24. > :00:28.Guilty. Security guard Clive Carter is jailed for life for the murder of
:00:29. > :00:32.a delegate at a Glasgow conference. This was a particularly brutal, evil
:00:33. > :00:38.and senseless attack on an innocent woman. Also tonight, blood on
:00:39. > :00:42.mattresses and contaminated incubated and cots. The dirty
:00:43. > :00:46.conditions found at one of the country's maternity hospitals. High
:00:47. > :00:54.security as four men and a woman appear in court on terrorism and
:00:55. > :00:58.conspiracy to murder charges. G -- G4S has made a bid to work at the
:00:59. > :01:01.Commonwealth Games. And we speak to the Highland landowner about his
:01:02. > :01:06.long-held and controversial plans to bring bears and wolves to his
:01:07. > :01:09.estate. A man who bludgeoned a conference
:01:10. > :01:12.delegate to death with a fire at dinner show has been found guilty of
:01:13. > :01:27.murder and jailed for at least 20 years. -- a conference delegate.
:01:28. > :01:30.Khanokporn Satjawat was a product manager based in Thailand for a
:01:31. > :01:35.global drugs company. In November, she travelled to Glasgow for an
:01:36. > :01:39.international conference on HIV. Two days later, she was dead. She was
:01:40. > :01:45.battered to death by this man, security guard Clive Carter, a man
:01:46. > :01:48.paid to ensure she was safe. This was a particularly brutal, evil and
:01:49. > :01:56.senseless attack on an innocent woman. Just after lunchtime, on the
:01:57. > :02:00.12th of November, she left the auditorium to go to the toilet.
:02:01. > :02:03.Security guard Clive Carter was standing just outside the
:02:04. > :02:08.auditorium. He asked to see her pass and he was quite officious about it.
:02:09. > :02:12.A colleague of Khanokporn Satjawat told the police that after the first
:02:13. > :02:16.day of the conference, Khanokporn Satjawat had complained to her that
:02:17. > :02:19.she was having her pass checked continually by the same security
:02:20. > :02:24.guard. So, stopped again, perhaps she accused him of picking on her.
:02:25. > :02:30.His response was to arm himself with a fire extinguisher, follow her into
:02:31. > :02:36.the toilet and hit her again and again, and again. He left her lying
:02:37. > :02:42.on the floor in a pool of blood. The message I would give to the family
:02:43. > :02:48.is that this was an unusual murder. An extremely rare murder. It has
:02:49. > :02:52.never happened in my 29 years of the police service. I hope, following
:02:53. > :02:57.the verdict, they can take some degree of comfort from the sentence.
:02:58. > :03:01.Eight days before the murder, Carter was working at this hotel. He forced
:03:02. > :03:07.his way into the room of a woman that was on her own. He was carrying
:03:08. > :03:10.a fire extinguisher. The judge wondered today what would have
:03:11. > :03:13.happened if the woman had not had the presence of mind to get out of
:03:14. > :03:19.the room before the situation escalated. Carter was employed by
:03:20. > :03:24.G4S. The company said today, we would like to pass on our deepest
:03:25. > :03:26.condolences to the family of Khanokporn Satjawat. This was a
:03:27. > :03:32.brutal and unprovoked attack and the sentenced today reflects the
:03:33. > :03:42.severity of the crime. Khanokporn Satjawat was just six and a half
:03:43. > :03:45.stone. Today, the judge told Clive Carter it would be up to the parole
:03:46. > :03:52.board to decide when, if ever, he was released.
:03:53. > :03:56.Blood on mattresses and bed rails and contaminated incubators and
:03:57. > :03:59.cots. Cleanliness inspectors were so concerned about what they found at
:04:00. > :04:04.Aberdeen Maternity, they went straight to the Scottish Government.
:04:05. > :04:10.Tonight, the chief executive of NHS Grampian said unit was too old.
:04:11. > :04:15.It should be the happiest day of any parent's life. But for those giving
:04:16. > :04:20.birth in Aberdeen, they have been surrounded by pockets of filth,
:04:21. > :04:25.contaminated incubators and cots man blood staining, bodily fluid and
:04:26. > :04:29.dust, all identified by inspectors at the city's maternity Hospital.
:04:30. > :04:33.The hospital chief executive told me they had already made changes to
:04:34. > :04:39.working practices. At the age of the unit makes it a challenge. Why does
:04:40. > :04:42.the age reflect cleanliness? Cleanliness is clearly the issue.
:04:43. > :04:45.But the environment is also quite challenging to keep clean because of
:04:46. > :04:49.its age and because it is no longer fit for purpose. I don't want to
:04:50. > :04:53.make that too much of an excuse. In reality, irrespective of the state
:04:54. > :04:59.of the fabric of the building, we should still be in a position where
:05:00. > :05:02.we can keep the facility clean. New mother Rebecca Tawse is taking her
:05:03. > :05:09.first child home. Her daughter was born on Monday, weighing eight
:05:10. > :05:12.pounds. She is so far without a name. But Rebecca is less critical
:05:13. > :05:17.than the inspectors. They came around if you needed your bed
:05:18. > :05:22.changed, there was bed linen and everything underneath for the
:05:23. > :05:28.babies. You could change it yourself if she had got dirty in the middle
:05:29. > :05:31.of the night. I was quite happy. NHS Grampian would not let us inside the
:05:32. > :05:36.hospital today to film the maternity unit or to see the current
:05:37. > :05:39.condition. But they insist that procedures had been tightened up and
:05:40. > :05:46.anyone admitted today will find that it is clean. Among the worst things
:05:47. > :05:50.found were contamination to incubators and cots used by
:05:51. > :05:53.patients, but staining on the underside of mattresses and body
:05:54. > :05:58.fluids or the walls of the intensive care unit. There is absolutely no
:05:59. > :06:02.excuse for the shortcomings identified by this report
:06:03. > :06:07.whatsoever. No excuse whatsoever. I will be holding NHS Grampian to
:06:08. > :06:15.account to make sure this does not happen again and they do implement
:06:16. > :06:18.the recommendations. A new life and chapter for Rebecca. NHS Grampian
:06:19. > :06:25.says it will look at replacing the maternity hospital completely.
:06:26. > :06:29.Four men and a woman have appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court charged
:06:30. > :06:33.with terrorism offences and conspiracy to murder. The five,
:06:34. > :06:38.Martin Hughes, Edward McVey, Anton Duffy, Paul Sands and Stacy
:06:39. > :06:44.McAllister, all from Scotland, were detained during police raids across
:06:45. > :06:49.the country last week. On their way to court, four men and
:06:50. > :06:52.a woman held here at high security police station for the past six
:06:53. > :07:00.days. They were arrested in an operation apprised by police in
:07:01. > :07:04.Scotland. A small demonstration was mounted outside the court. Police in
:07:05. > :07:10.earlier said the operation had been focused on dissident Republicans,
:07:11. > :07:12.who were not affiliated to any specific group. Part of the
:07:13. > :07:22.indictment against the five alleges they attempted to try firearms and
:07:23. > :07:24.explosives, with a blue for... View to the commission of terrorist
:07:25. > :07:28.offences included damage to property, the murder of civilians
:07:29. > :07:32.and a terrorist campaign. It is alleged that the conspiracy took
:07:33. > :07:37.place on the south side of Glasgow. All five accused, aged between 26
:07:38. > :07:43.and 39, have addresses in Scotland. All five appeared separately, in
:07:44. > :07:46.private, and made no plea or declaration. They were remanded in
:07:47. > :07:54.custody to appear before a sheriff next Wednesday.
:07:55. > :07:58.You are watching Reporting Scotland. Still to come: A wealthy
:07:59. > :08:02.environmentalist plans to push ahead with the introduction of bears and
:08:03. > :08:06.wolves to his Highland estate. In sport, as they prepare for the
:08:07. > :08:12.autumn internationals, we are with the Scotland rugby squad. But one of
:08:13. > :08:16.their most important players is not. And super, smashing, great. If you
:08:17. > :08:22.love Old site, you might like this. And it is not even about darts. --
:08:23. > :08:27.Bullseye. Jack Straw has called for a party
:08:28. > :08:31.inquiry into allegations of vote rigging within Labour's Falkirk
:08:32. > :08:36.constituency to be reopened. Meanwhile, the party's Scottish
:08:37. > :08:42.leader declined to comment when asked about accusations of
:08:43. > :08:48.wrongdoing against Stephen Deans, the union leader at the centre of
:08:49. > :08:53.the Grangemouth dispute. The fires of Grangemouth are still
:08:54. > :08:57.burning. But the dispute has sparked a political row that shows no sign
:08:58. > :09:00.of going out. Workers breathed a sigh of relief on Friday when they
:09:01. > :09:06.learned the plant would stay open. Today, the man responsible for the
:09:07. > :09:13.Scottish economy had strong words for union and management. There are
:09:14. > :09:18.many matters that are deeply unsatisfactory between the union and
:09:19. > :09:22.company at Grangemouth. Labour's finance spokesman plays the workers
:09:23. > :09:27.that had foreseen the reopening of the plant. We have to understand the
:09:28. > :09:32.painful sacrifices that have been made. The Tories turned their fire
:09:33. > :09:38.on the Unite union and Labour comrades. We can't forget it was the
:09:39. > :09:44.irresponsible actions of Unite that put the plant at risk. Nobody in the
:09:45. > :09:49.Scottish Labour Party dared criticise their union paymasters. We
:09:50. > :09:52.asked John Lamont to comment, but she was unavailable. Labour have
:09:53. > :09:57.tried to put a brave face on allegations that the union leader at
:09:58. > :10:00.the centre of the dispute tried to rig the contest to choose the next
:10:01. > :10:04.Labour candidate in Falkirk. They say that is not a question for them,
:10:05. > :10:07.but the party leadership in London. Stephen Deans resigned from his
:10:08. > :10:12.Grangemouth job after the owners, INEOS, accused him of campaigning
:10:13. > :10:15.while at work. He kept his Labour role as chairman of Falkirk West,
:10:16. > :10:21.after a party inquiry was abandoned. A former Labour Cabinet minister
:10:22. > :10:26.added his voice to those calling for it to be reopened. I would certainly
:10:27. > :10:29.consider reopening the investigation. The inquiry was faced
:10:30. > :10:34.with an investigation where there was clear evidence, by at least two
:10:35. > :10:39.people, of concerns about what was going on inside Falkirk. That key
:10:40. > :10:42.evidence was later withdrawn. Unite insist they have done nothing wrong,
:10:43. > :10:45.with labour due to get on with choosing a new candidate next week.
:10:46. > :10:51.The row about their involvement continues.
:10:52. > :10:56.The chairman of an influential House of Commons committee has told BBC
:10:57. > :10:58.Scotland he is astonished that the security form G4S may have some
:10:59. > :11:02.involvement in the Commonwealth Games in vans go. The security
:11:03. > :11:06.company was criticised for failing to provide enough staff for the
:11:07. > :11:13.London Olympics. But the BBC has learned they have made a bid to work
:11:14. > :11:20.at Glasgow 2014. London 2012. The army came to the
:11:21. > :11:24.rescue after security firm G4S failed to provide enough staff at
:11:25. > :11:28.the Olympics. The security company were heavily criticised. And we have
:11:29. > :11:34.learned they could be involved in the Commonwealth Games next summer.
:11:35. > :11:40.G4S already provide security here at Hamden and also at the SEC see. It
:11:41. > :11:46.is understood those other venues that they will be interested in
:11:47. > :11:50.providing security for four Glasgow 2014. Athletics will be a huge draw
:11:51. > :11:54.here, with tickets already sold out during the seven days of action.
:11:55. > :11:59.Sports taking place within the SECC precinct will also be popular with
:12:00. > :12:05.the likes of gymnastics, boxing, judo and netball all taking place
:12:06. > :12:09.within the vicinity. Within the last 30 minutes, G4S have confirmed they
:12:10. > :12:16.want to be involved in the games's security. One senior MP believes it
:12:17. > :12:18.would be up mistake. I will be writing to the chairman of the
:12:19. > :12:22.procurement committee and sending him a copy of the report. If they
:12:23. > :12:26.decide that things have changed so much that they should give G4S the
:12:27. > :12:29.contract, that would be up to them. But we need to warn them so that it
:12:30. > :12:34.is very clear what went wrong. At the end of the day, governments in
:12:35. > :12:37.Scotland and the rest of the UK should make sure that there is a
:12:38. > :12:41.high risk register. Those that let the people down and should not be
:12:42. > :12:47.given the chance to let people down again. The Glasgow 2014 budget for
:12:48. > :12:57.security increased substantially after London 2012. It went up to ?90
:12:58. > :13:00.million. Police Scotland have taken on responsibility for the security,
:13:01. > :13:04.and the plan is for contracts to be shared by a number of firms, rather
:13:05. > :13:15.than just one supplier. In a statement tonight, they said:
:13:16. > :13:23.Tonight, Glasgow 2014 say companies will be considered on their merits
:13:24. > :13:25.and stress no appointments have been made.
:13:26. > :13:29.We're approaching the 25th anniversary of the Lockerbie bombing
:13:30. > :13:32.and the loss of 270. On his first full visit to Scotland, the new US
:13:33. > :13:35.Ambassador has said there remains real anger in America that the man
:13:36. > :13:40.convicted of the atrocity, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, was released
:13:41. > :13:42.from a Scottish prison. But he insisted the bonds of friendship
:13:43. > :13:51.between the countries far transcended that controversy. He met
:13:52. > :13:58.our political editor Brian Taylor. New to the job he may be, but he
:13:59. > :14:02.knows the old wounds of Lockerbie still staying in his homeland,
:14:03. > :14:09.especially the release of the soul conflict, al-Megrahi. I would
:14:10. > :14:12.characterise the feelings and that the surge in which you are well
:14:13. > :14:21.aware of as a mixture of surprise, shock and anger. Very understandable
:14:22. > :14:29.anger that justice in the eyes of those victims was not served. Four
:14:30. > :14:34.years ago, they cheered his return. The US ambassador says changing
:14:35. > :14:41.circumstances provide the ability to trace others linked with the
:14:42. > :14:46.atrocity. He says Americans also remember the kindness shown by the
:14:47. > :14:54.people of Lockerbie. He insists the ball and far transcends this
:14:55. > :15:01.controversy. We have roughly 400,000 American visitors coming to
:15:02. > :15:06.Scotland. 4000 US students studying here and over 1000 businesses doing
:15:07. > :15:12.business in Scotland. That has an incredible foundation. Do you detect
:15:13. > :15:20.longer-term damage to relations Scotland and the US? The depth and
:15:21. > :15:30.strength of this relationship can get us through this. He stresses
:15:31. > :15:32.next year's referendum is entirely a matter for Scotland and the UK to

:15:46. > :15:49.whose organs were donated in the past five years were not on the
:15:50. > :15:51.donor register. A new campaign is urging people to tell their families
:15:52. > :15:55.about their wishes. Motorcyclist Matt Polanski's organs saved the
:15:56. > :16:06.lives of four people after he died in a racing accident two months ago.
:16:07. > :16:11.I knew that he was on the organ donation less than we had discussed
:16:12. > :16:15.it, so I knew he wanted to discuss his organs so the decision had
:16:16. > :16:17.already been made. It was a wish I honoured.
:16:18. > :16:20.Plans for an 11 wind turbine testing centre in Aberdeen Bay have received
:16:21. > :16:23.a major set back. Councillors have refused permission for an
:16:24. > :16:25.electricity substation for them. The developers say they're considering
:16:26. > :16:30.their options. American businessman Donald Trump, whose golf resort is
:16:31. > :16:34.nearby, was a critic of the scheme. A major traffic shake up is to be
:16:35. > :16:38.piloted in Edinburgh city centre. George street is to have a one way
:16:39. > :16:41.traffic system and a dedicated two way bike lane. On-street car parking
:16:42. > :16:46.is being reviewed and the frequency of buses on Princes street will be

:17:33. > :17:36.A wealthy environmentalist has pledged to push ahead with plans to
:17:37. > :17:38.introduce bears and wolves to his Highland estate, despite a largely
:17:39. > :17:42.critical response to his latest proposals. It's now ten years since

:17:46. > :17:56.been talking to our environment correspondent, David Miller.
:17:57. > :18:03.It is beautiful and remote. The estate covers 23,000 acres, but this

:18:11. > :18:20.on red deer and Gross, the top is of beers and wolves. -- grouse. These
:18:21. > :18:24.are the biggest beasts on the estate today but the owner still harbours
:18:25. > :18:30.ambitions to release the kind of large predators which would have
:18:31. > :18:37.been found here centuries ago. We did a feasibility study on the big

:20:53. > :20:55.We need these kind of players. Tim Visser Mrs matches next month as
:20:56. > :21:01.Scotland take on Japan, South Africa and Australia, and it is a family
