:00:00. > :00:17.let-up. Thank you. That is all from the BBC News at Six. Goodbye. Now

:00:18. > :00:24.Tonight on reporting Scotland: The Treasury claims they will be a hole

:00:25. > :00:28.in the finances of an independent Scotland. The SNP say that the

:00:29. > :00:39.figures from the UK government do not add up.

:00:40. > :00:42.A BBC investigation uncovers a wide variations in the wake police in

:00:43. > :00:51.different parts of Scotland are dealing with the mystic abuse. --

:00:52. > :00:57.domestic abuse. A top swimmer tells us that a recent heart scare did not

:00:58. > :01:01.frighten him. I was more interested in boasting about it to my

:01:02. > :01:08.team-mates, I trained so hard that I pushed my heart rate into an

:01:09. > :01:21.irregular rhythm! And a spacemen comes travelling. Chris Hadfield

:01:22. > :01:25.lands in Edinburgh. The UK Treasury claims that there is

:01:26. > :01:29.a financial hole in the claims of the Scottish government outlined in

:01:30. > :01:34.a financial White Paper. It claims it would cost an extra 1.6 billion

:01:35. > :01:40.pounds to fund pledges such as improved childcare. But Nicola

:01:41. > :01:46.Sturgeon says that those claims do not add up. The Treasury claims to

:01:47. > :01:58.have costed plans in the Scottish cup and White Paper. They say that

:01:59. > :02:05.the policies to: They say that those policies add to a bill of ?1.6

:02:06. > :02:11.billion every year. The truth is that the plans do not add up

:02:12. > :02:14.whichever way you look at them. People should be cautious about

:02:15. > :02:22.voting for a plan and shaky economic foundations. Ministers claim that

:02:23. > :02:27.the Treasury analysis ignores the tax which would be gained from

:02:28. > :02:32.getting parents back to work. The Treasury dispute that, singer costs

:02:33. > :02:39.will go up first, before benefits. -- saying that. The Prime Minister

:02:40. > :02:41.responded to the first Minister, who demanded assurances over the

:02:42. > :02:52.long-term future of the armoured formula. -- Barnett. In a few --

:02:53. > :03:07.letter, he said: Nicola Sturgeon points to estimates

:03:08. > :03:13.that scrapping it could cost Scotland ?4 billion every year. The

:03:14. > :03:19.primary studies saying he can give no guarantees about our budget. Yet

:03:20. > :03:21.he is part of a campaign that guarantees future assurances from

:03:22. > :03:30.the Yes campaign every day of the week. When asked for the same, he

:03:31. > :03:33.will not give them. The most recent figures show that the number of

:03:34. > :03:39.Scots seeking work was down by 7000, while the number of people in

:03:40. > :03:44.work, went up. And a record number of women are now working. Our

:03:45. > :03:48.business editor was looking at the figures.

:03:49. > :03:53.There is some Christmas cheer in these figures. Even though they come

:03:54. > :04:02.from the period August -October. The number seeking work, down 7000. Two

:04:03. > :04:09.196,000. A really large drop at a UK level. 99,000. As a share of the

:04:10. > :04:17.workforce, the unemployment rate is down to 7.1% in Scotland, 7.4%

:04:18. > :04:22.across the UK. That figure is significant. The governor of the

:04:23. > :04:26.Bank of England says that if 7% is reached, they could be a return to

:04:27. > :04:33.normality, a rise in interest rates. That is not guaranteed, but

:04:34. > :04:40.it may be a trigger for the economy to recover.

:04:41. > :04:46.And those people in work? Yes, 11th hour is more Scots in

:04:47. > :04:55.work. That is the 11th month of the figures rising. -- 11,000 more

:04:56. > :04:59.Scots. The number in work has risen very much faster over the past year

:05:00. > :05:06.than the number looking for work has fallen. But both figures are heading

:05:07. > :05:09.in the right direction. However, we also got the pay rate today,

:05:10. > :05:17.covering the whole of the UK, up by less than 1% in the year to October.

:05:18. > :05:21.Now, the inflation rate is about 2%. That gap is the continuing

:05:22. > :05:27.squeeze on household spending. It is not all good news.

:05:28. > :05:30.A warning of severe gales has been issue by the Met Office for

:05:31. > :05:38.Western, Central, and northern Scotland. The worst is likely to hit

:05:39. > :05:41.later tonight as winds reach 90 mph in exposed areas. Flood warnings are

:05:42. > :05:46.in place for West Central Scotland and Tayside. We have been having

:05:47. > :05:55.some technical problems because of the weather. We can try to visit

:05:56. > :05:59.Katrina Renton who is in Largs. Believe it or not, this is the calm

:06:00. > :06:07.before the storm. It has gotten worse since we arrived at this

:06:08. > :06:10.evening. Worse is predicted. The Met Office has provided amber warnings

:06:11. > :06:18.from the Highlands, down the West Coast, to Aaron. That means winds of

:06:19. > :06:25.over 80 mph. Potentially very damaging. The rest of the country is

:06:26. > :06:30.not exempt either. Everyone else has been issue with a yellow warning.

:06:31. > :06:36.Winds of up to 70 mph. The relatively good news is that these

:06:37. > :06:41.warnings have been issued from 9pm this evening until 8am tomorrow. The

:06:42. > :06:45.very worst will be in the early hours and hopefully many of us are

:06:46. > :06:49.asleep in our beds. Transport Scotland are on stand-by. As our

:06:50. > :06:54.power companies in case there is disruption. But there are also flood

:06:55. > :06:59.warnings in place where there will be heavy rain. The Scottish

:07:00. > :07:00.environmental protection agency has provided flood warnings across 16

:07:01. > :07:06.areas in the country. Escher, Argyll areas in the country. Escher, Argyll

:07:07. > :07:13.Bute, Tayside, west Central Scotland. -- Ayrshire. A miserable

:07:14. > :07:17.night ahead. Hopefully it will clear up in time for the morning commute.

:07:18. > :07:21.But you can still expect unpleasant conditions in the morning.

:07:22. > :07:26.Christopher has already told me that we can not expect a great day

:07:27. > :07:32.tomorrow. Much colder, sleet, blizzards, snow in the Highlands.

:07:33. > :07:35.You can expect disruption. The advice is, before you go to bed, if

:07:36. > :07:41.you are in one of the worst affected areas, make one of the necessary

:07:42. > :07:45.preparations. A full weather bulletin will follow at the end of

:07:46. > :07:50.the programme. But let me warn you, he said it would be unsettled from

:07:51. > :07:57.now until Christmas. That is is warmed.

:07:58. > :08:04.You are watching reporting Scotland. Still to come: The Canadian

:08:05. > :08:11.astronaut who serenaded the world from the International Space

:08:12. > :08:16.Station, lands in Scotland. And the swimming version of the Ryder Cup is

:08:17. > :08:20.being held in Glasgow. Michael Jamieson talks about that and his

:08:21. > :08:24.recent health scare. And the Ryder Cup itself is coming to Scotland,

:08:25. > :08:33.but a former European captain is concerned that there might not any

:08:34. > :08:35.Scots taking part. -- might not be. A BBC investigation has discovered

:08:36. > :08:42.variations in the way police in Scotland deal with cases of domestic

:08:43. > :08:48.abuse. Only 50% of cases were investigated last year in the old

:08:49. > :08:52.Grampian force area. I contrast, in the northern region, 90% of

:08:53. > :08:58.complaints were acted upon. We heard the harrowing story of one woman's

:08:59. > :09:01.experience with domestic abuse. Nicola is looking forward to

:09:02. > :09:05.spending Christmas with her young son and extended family. A very

:09:06. > :09:09.different picture from two years ago when she was on the point of leaving

:09:10. > :09:15.a violent and abusive husband after four years of abuse. I was

:09:16. > :09:22.threatened with weapons. Assaulted whilst breast-feeding. I would be in

:09:23. > :09:25.bed breast-feeding my son in the dark, I was not allowed to switch

:09:26. > :09:31.off lights. On one occasion he physically kick me out of bed.

:09:32. > :09:36.Nicola and her son fled the family home and went into hiding for 18

:09:37. > :09:41.months. No charges were ever brought against her ex-husband. The police

:09:42. > :09:46.were understanding and supportive on an emotional level. But the law is

:09:47. > :09:53.weak. There was not much action they could take. They questioned my

:09:54. > :09:57.abuser. He gave no comments. He would not discuss the situation.

:09:58. > :10:02.There were no which assist to any of the situations which led to me

:10:03. > :10:10.fleeing. Figures show that how cases are dealt with varies greatly across

:10:11. > :10:15.Scotland. Victims in the Grampian saw only a few Mac cases taken to

:10:16. > :10:18.the procurator fiscal. In Strathclyde, the number was three

:10:19. > :10:25.quarters. But officers say that a single

:10:26. > :10:32.national force has entered the postcode lottery. We can deal with

:10:33. > :10:38.this in a fair, equitable, consistent, highly professional

:10:39. > :10:45.manner across Scotland. Units set up across Scotland are getting results.

:10:46. > :10:49.Bryan Strang was today sentenced for eight years for the rape of two

:10:50. > :10:53.former partners and an attack on a third. For victims it is time that

:10:54. > :11:01.abusers were held to account more often. He has not been charged for

:11:02. > :11:04.any acts of abuse against us. Although I am incredibly grateful

:11:05. > :11:08.for the support that we have had and the new life that we have had, and

:11:09. > :11:12.they wouldn't change that for anything, I have no regrets, but the

:11:13. > :11:23.cost has been enormous, and it has been nice. -- on us. And you can see

:11:24. > :11:28.the investigation on BBC Scotland tonight at 10:35pm. Police divers

:11:29. > :11:39.searching for a missing 17-year-old boy in Fife have recovered a body in

:11:40. > :11:43.the river leaving. -- Levin. For teenagers have appeared at

:11:44. > :11:51.Glasgow Sheriff Court charged with breaking into the Clutha pub where

:11:52. > :11:58.ten died in a helicopter crash last week. The group are alleged to have

:11:59. > :12:05.stolen items from the building. They were remanded in custody. The final

:12:06. > :12:08.funeral for a victim has been held, 59-year-old Joe Cosco died in

:12:09. > :12:16.hospital almost a fortnight after the accident. -- Joe Cusker.

:12:17. > :12:27.Mourners gathered for the service at a crib tool in Blantyre. --

:12:28. > :12:32.crematorium. Melissa Reid, the Scot sentenced to

:12:33. > :12:35.eight years after being caught with ?1.5 million of cocaine in their

:12:36. > :12:40.luggage in her room in their luggage into ruin August has appealed to the

:12:41. > :12:43.Peruvian government to spend part of her jail term in Scotland. It is up

:12:44. > :12:47.to the Peruvian and Scottish governance to decide whether they

:12:48. > :12:57.can be transferred. An investigation is underway to after a 79-year-old

:12:58. > :13:02.woman was hit by a car on a dual carriageway just before 9am this

:13:03. > :13:07.morning. A bill to help stamp out abuse of

:13:08. > :13:16.the disabled drivers parking scheme would allow parking wardens to

:13:17. > :13:18.confiscate badges from offenders. This will give powers to local

:13:19. > :13:23.authorities to use badges which are being used inappropriately. If we

:13:24. > :13:32.confiscate anything, we will return it to the Batchelder. -- badge

:13:33. > :13:35.holder. The Scottish government says that the renewable energy potential

:13:36. > :13:41.of the western and Northern Isles is huge, but could be jeopardised

:13:42. > :13:44.without the backing. Plans for a ?33 million

:13:45. > :13:48.redevelopment of Aberdeen Art Gallery have been approved by

:13:49. > :13:56.councillors. The project involves a large roof extension condemned by

:13:57. > :14:01.some as corporate vandalism. But supporters say it will create a

:14:02. > :14:07.world-class cultural centre. It is being hailed as a cornerstone for

:14:08. > :14:13.the regeneration of Aberdeen city centre.

:14:14. > :14:18.There is concern that a wind farm in Cumbria acute undermine plans for a

:14:19. > :14:22.art sculpture on the England-Scotland border. It is hoped

:14:23. > :14:28.it would have a tour is attraction similar to the Angel of the North in

:14:29. > :14:36.Gateshead. -- tourism. More stories from your area, and the

:14:37. > :14:40.latest news, on our website. Just before the sporting action,

:14:41. > :14:45.Rangers shareholders are being told to attend the AGM which takes place

:14:46. > :14:51.tomorrow. The call comes from someone trying to get onto the

:14:52. > :14:53.board. This is where shareholders will

:14:54. > :14:58.gather tomorrow morning for a much anticipated meeting. Paul Murray, a

:14:59. > :15:03.nominee trying to get elected to the board, reacted with surprise last

:15:04. > :15:07.night when BBC Scotland ran a story that none of the group had earned

:15:08. > :15:12.sufficient report to get a place on the board. We also brought you news

:15:13. > :15:17.that the current incumbents had received sufficient votes to in

:15:18. > :15:22.place. Who are these men? David Somers will remain as chairman. He

:15:23. > :15:29.was brought in in November when there were only two Mac directors in

:15:30. > :15:35.place. Graham Wallace stays as Chief Executive. A former director of

:15:36. > :15:40.Manchester City. Brian Stockbridge, financial director since Charles

:15:41. > :15:45.Green purchased the assets. He has resided over extensive losses but

:15:46. > :15:50.has been re-elected. James Easdale, appointed in July, and his brother,

:15:51. > :15:56.Sandy, sit on the football board. They hold voting rights over 26% of

:15:57. > :16:00.shares. And Norman Crichton, a nonexecutive director, brought in in

:16:01. > :16:07.November as the order sought to bolster numbers. They will continue

:16:08. > :16:15.to run the club until the AGM tomorrow. I spoke to a critic of the

:16:16. > :16:17.board to get his view. Last Saturday we held a red cards showing we want

:16:18. > :16:25.a new board. There is disappointment. The institutional

:16:26. > :16:30.investors who went along with supporters and listened, I believe

:16:31. > :16:34.they are long-term investors. I would imagine there would be a

:16:35. > :16:39.reaction from them. The short-term investors have got what they wanted.

:16:40. > :16:42.Paul Murray has said that every shareholder should make their voice

:16:43. > :16:48.heard. We will bring you all the reaction to that tomorrow night.

:16:49. > :16:52.The former Rangers owner Craig Whyte has lost an appeal over a court

:16:53. > :16:55.ruling that he must pay almost ?18 million to ticketing firm, Ticketus.

:16:56. > :16:59.They provided funds for Mr Whyte to buy the club under a deal which

:17:00. > :17:02.would have seen it paid back from sales but when Rangers entered

:17:03. > :17:05.administration that deal ended. Ticketus then sued Mr Whyte,

:17:06. > :17:07.claiming he had not disclosed details such as a previous

:17:08. > :17:15.disqualification from serving as a director.

:17:16. > :17:17.We turn our attentions to sport now, and David.

:17:18. > :17:24.Some of the world's best swimmers are in Glasgow as the City plays

:17:25. > :17:30.host to its first Duel in the Pool. The competition is unique and has

:17:31. > :17:40.been compared to golf's Ryder Cup. One Scottish winner is backing the

:17:41. > :17:43.bill after a recent heart scare. Like many other Commonwealth Games

:17:44. > :17:48.venues here in Glasgow, Tollcross will get a pre-games tester. Duel in

:17:49. > :17:53.the Pool will see some of the top European swimmers competing against

:17:54. > :17:56.some of the best from America. Leading European challenge in

:17:57. > :18:03.Scotland's Michael Jamieson, thank you for joining us. First, you had

:18:04. > :18:08.us worried a few weeks ago, how are you?

:18:09. > :18:11.Completely fine. A bit of a scare a few weeks ago but I've been given

:18:12. > :18:16.the all clear. It was just a blip from pushing as hard as I can in

:18:17. > :18:19.training. I've been given the all clear and back full-time training

:18:20. > :18:23.and competing as normal. This event over Friday and Saturday

:18:24. > :18:28.will count towards the preparation. Tell us about the jewel in the

:18:29. > :18:32.pool. It will be a great event. The pool

:18:33. > :18:36.looks fantastic. This is the first time I have been back here to

:18:37. > :18:40.compete, and it will be great fun. We have a great strong side with the

:18:41. > :18:43.Europeans and hopefully we will give the American team you run for their

:18:44. > :18:48.money. This place has changed since you

:18:49. > :18:53.used to train here, has it not? Yes, it has had a full revamp and it

:18:54. > :18:57.looks great. It is a lovely venue for something of the magnitude of

:18:58. > :19:02.the Commonwealth Games. Thank you for joining us. Michael is

:19:03. > :19:05.off to do more training. Duel in the Pool will take place here on Friday

:19:06. > :19:11.and Saturday. .

:19:12. > :19:14.Now on to the Ryder Cup itself. The competition's being held in Scotland

:19:15. > :19:17.next year but one former captain is worried there won't be any Scots

:19:18. > :19:20.taking part. Bernard Gallacher has high hopes of a win for Europe over

:19:21. > :19:24.the United States at Gleneagles. But will there be any home heroes for

:19:25. > :19:28.the fans to cheer? Kheredine Idessane reports.

:19:29. > :19:32.Back in the spotlight after a real scare. He reminded reporters this

:19:33. > :19:36.morning he is lucky to be alive after a serious cardiac arrest

:19:37. > :19:40.recently. He has been told to take it easy, but that is hard for one of

:19:41. > :19:46.European golf's best-known names, a Ryder Cup winning captain in 1985,

:19:47. > :19:50.he is worried that there will be no Scots in the team on Gleneagles

:19:51. > :19:54.hosts next year. They can't pick a Scott when he is

:19:55. > :19:56.not well enough to get in it. We will just have to hope that some

:19:57. > :20:02.Scottish golfers come through and make the team. I am optimistic that

:20:03. > :20:08.a few will come through and get in the running to get in the team.

:20:09. > :20:10.The one Scot he does rate is Paul Lawrie who brought the famous trophy

:20:11. > :20:17.to Scotland this year. He played so well in the last one.

:20:18. > :20:21.He will make a big effort to make the team, especially being in

:20:22. > :20:25.Scotland. He was instrumental in our victory the last time. In fact, he

:20:26. > :20:34.was the catalyst for the victory when he won early doors. I would

:20:35. > :20:38.hope you would make the team. Gaelic's nephew, Stephen, is another

:20:39. > :20:42.who could enter the fray, but he and the other Scottish players have a

:20:43. > :20:46.lot of ground to make up to join your's deadly dozen at Gleneagles.

:20:47. > :20:53.Now, a look at what else is happening across Scottish sport.

:20:54. > :20:59.Scotland should have a new cricket coach for the World Cup qualifiers

:21:00. > :21:01.in January. The South African is parting company from Cricket

:21:02. > :21:06.Scotland after the team failed to qualify for the World Cup.

:21:07. > :21:12.Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins are reuniting for the tennis doubles in

:21:13. > :21:19.Brisbane. Hutchins is in remission one year after being diagnosed with

:21:20. > :21:22.cancer. Scotland international John Lamb and

:21:23. > :21:30.could be out for up to six weeks. He has ligament damage. He could be fit

:21:31. > :21:33.for the six Nations internationals. East Fife have appointed Gary

:21:34. > :21:38.Naismith as manager. He joined the club as player in the summer after

:21:39. > :21:42.moving from Aberdeen. Years also played for hearts, Everton and

:21:43. > :21:45.Huddersfield. Scotland's woman could reach the

:21:46. > :21:48.final of the international tournament in Brazil. They must beat

:21:49. > :21:53.Chile by more than two goals tonight, and hope the Brazilians

:21:54. > :22:02.beat Canada. More sports stories and the latest

:22:03. > :22:05.news 24 hours a day on the website. I'll be on the website when I am

:22:06. > :22:10.sheltering from the winter nights. He is the astronaut who became a

:22:11. > :22:14.global star by singing in space. Commander Chris Hadfield captivated

:22:15. > :22:16.the world with his music videos and photos from the International Space

:22:17. > :22:19.Station, which he commanded until May. Now the Canadian has touched

:22:20. > :22:30.down in Scotland, and Joanne Macaulay went to meet him.

:22:31. > :22:33.# Ground control to Major Tom #. His performance give new meaning to

:22:34. > :22:41.a David Bowie classic and brought space travel three new audience.

:22:42. > :22:46.# This is ground control to Major Tom #.

:22:47. > :22:51.Commander Hadfield also shared striking images of the Earth, such

:22:52. > :22:56.as these from Scotland. He is amazed that his pictures and videos struck

:22:57. > :22:59.a chord with so many. Hundreds of millions have seen that

:23:00. > :23:04.all around the world. It is a delightful link between the science

:23:05. > :23:08.of the space station and art and culture. I really enjoyed it.

:23:09. > :23:17.It is not everyday you get to a spaceman at school.

:23:18. > :23:19.Today's science lesson at this high school in Edinburgh was extra
