:00:00. > :00:13.all from us. Now we join our news teams where you

:00:14. > :00:21.Tonight, on Reporting Scotland. A hostile reception for the Rangers

:00:22. > :00:24.Board at the club's Annual General Meeting - but tonight the board

:00:25. > :00:31.remain in place after a failed bid to remove them from power.

:00:32. > :00:33.After wind and rain batters much of the country households and

:00:34. > :00:45.businesses assess the damage, tonight a warning that more is on

:00:46. > :00:50.the way. Snow, ice, high winds and heavy rain

:00:51. > :00:52.all in the forecast for the next 24 hours.

:00:53. > :00:56.Also on the programme, it's all smiles as the favourite baby names

:00:57. > :00:59.of the year are revealed, with some surprising additions.

:01:00. > :01:03.Still a minx at heart - Minnie Minx is 60 years young and gets her very

:01:04. > :01:06.own treat in the Christmas Beano. And the duel in the pool makes its

:01:07. > :01:13.way to Glasgow with some world famous names set to compete in this

:01:14. > :01:15.unique event. After two years of turmoil,

:01:16. > :01:19.protests, and mud-slinging, the Rangers board has formally survived

:01:20. > :01:21.re-election. At today's annual general meeting, the board's

:01:22. > :01:26.opponents, the so-called requisitioners, failed in their bid

:01:27. > :01:29.for power. With a loss of ?14 million in this year's accounts,

:01:30. > :01:33.many supporters are opposed to the club's financial management and fear

:01:34. > :01:43.for its future governance. Our senior football reporter Alasdair

:01:44. > :01:46.Lamont has more. These supporters have waited some

:01:47. > :01:54.time to let their feelings be known so when they finally got the chance,

:01:55. > :02:02.they did not hold back. Despite this, they comfortably survived. All

:02:03. > :02:08.five directors were voted backed by institutional directors with Graham

:02:09. > :02:15.Wallace getting greatest batting. The man with the least support was

:02:16. > :02:19.the man who was the target of the most vocal supporters today. It was

:02:20. > :02:24.always a day when passions would run the hide and supporters had the

:02:25. > :02:31.chance to put their views to the board and find out how the board

:02:32. > :02:34.would respond. Unless there is change and transparency, you would

:02:35. > :02:41.not want to put money into the club without knowing. We did not get the

:02:42. > :02:45.answers we need. I hope we can get through this rather than bickering

:02:46. > :02:50.over money. There's a lot of frustration and we did not get

:02:51. > :02:56.anywhere today. Some of these fans wanted Paul Murray and his grip on

:02:57. > :03:02.board but although they achieved 30% backing, they do not view to as a

:03:03. > :03:10.failure. Whatever happens, we have brought all the issues to the fore.

:03:11. > :03:16.We have brought transparency to the club and have raised the issues. We

:03:17. > :03:23.know from the fan reaction they can see what is happening to the club.

:03:24. > :03:27.Optimists might regard today as a watershed and the moment for peace

:03:28. > :03:30.to break out but realists may view it differently.

:03:31. > :03:33.For more on Rangers and the business of football, I'm joined by our

:03:34. > :03:42.business and economy editor Douglas Fraser. First, Douglas, is this

:03:43. > :03:46.dispute now over? The challengers have failed to gain enough support

:03:47. > :03:51.to get on the broadband it is not clear where they can go but the

:03:52. > :03:55.directors who where re-elected are pretty clear there is a large

:03:56. > :04:00.minority shareholders who are not happy about things. It is affecting

:04:01. > :04:05.their customer base and that should worry any business. This has partly

:04:06. > :04:11.been about clashing personalities and a dysfunctional board, and

:04:12. > :04:14.investors are still clearly very unhappy at the pace at which Rangers

:04:15. > :04:22.has been burning through its capital. A year ago today, shares in

:04:23. > :04:30.the Rangers started trading at 75p but today they are trading at 34p,

:04:31. > :04:37.less than half the value. What happens now? The new chairman and

:04:38. > :04:43.chief executive have promised to produce a robust business planning

:04:44. > :04:49.process, which effectively concedes there has been none in place. That

:04:50. > :04:55.includes youth team development and could see some players leaving

:04:56. > :04:58.because of the cost problems, and also the new chief executive has

:04:59. > :05:05.said it is reasonable to assume the funding will be needed before too

:05:06. > :05:08.long. He failed to get the legal powers he needs to go back to

:05:09. > :05:13.investors for the new tranche of investment. The club will probably

:05:14. > :05:18.try to go back there but they know they will have to provide a

:05:19. > :05:22.convincing case that they have a grip on the finances and the way in

:05:23. > :05:24.which the club is run as a business, as much as the football

:05:25. > :05:27.club. Scotland's facing more winter storms

:05:28. > :05:30.with snow, gale-force winds and heavy rain set to cause disruption

:05:31. > :05:33.in the run-up to Christmas. Tonight, there's warnings of snow and ice,

:05:34. > :05:38.particularly in the Highland and Grampian areas. We'll speak to our

:05:39. > :05:41.reporter Craig Anderson for more on that in a moment, but first, Aileen

:05:42. > :05:50.Clarke reports on the problems brought about by last night's wind

:05:51. > :05:56.and rain. Dumbarton at high tide. The other

:05:57. > :06:00.burst its banks in the early hours of this morning but even as it

:06:01. > :06:06.subsided, Scotland was still being blasted by fierce gales. In

:06:07. > :06:13.Kilbirnie, this scaffolding was ripped off the house wall. Winds

:06:14. > :06:19.lifted off part of a sheep pen and adopted through a car windscreen.

:06:20. > :06:28.The worst was then South Uist where it reached 90 mph. It reached 66 in

:06:29. > :06:32.Aberdeen and still gale force in the central belt. At the height of the

:06:33. > :06:41.storm around 10,000 homes were without power. This village shop was

:06:42. > :06:45.trading by candlelight. It has been pretty good this time because they

:06:46. > :06:50.have come back to it quickly and within a couple of hours it was back

:06:51. > :06:56.on again. In previous experience we have had to wait a long time. Other

:06:57. > :07:06.areas have been coming back on throughout the day and no snow and

:07:07. > :07:10.ice is the next challenge. That is how we've been bearing up,

:07:11. > :07:16.but how's it looking in the run-up to Christmas? You only have to look

:07:17. > :07:23.to see what is happening in Invernessshire tonight. I am about

:07:24. > :07:29.15 miles south of Inverness and as you can see, a bit of a winter

:07:30. > :07:37.wonderland, not so fine if you want to travel anywhere. The police and

:07:38. > :07:41.the local authority have issued a warning saying beard as heavy snow

:07:42. > :07:49.on the roots here so driving can be treacherous. Temperatures are going

:07:50. > :07:52.to drop and we could see icy roads just about anywhere, and where there

:07:53. > :07:57.is snow falling that could make driving conditions very difficult

:07:58. > :08:02.indeed. People should watch out for those kinds of conditions. What

:08:03. > :08:10.about the prospects for the weekend and the start of the Christmas week?

:08:11. > :08:15.The good news is that tomorrow the weather is going to get milder but

:08:16. > :08:21.with that mildness, there's a in because we will we will see heavy

:08:22. > :08:25.rain in many areas and with the snowmelt, that could lead to

:08:26. > :08:31.localised flooding. As well as that, we could see winds picking up

:08:32. > :08:37.again towards gale force and that may cause some damage. As for the

:08:38. > :08:42.rest of the weekend, forecasters say the weather will continue to be

:08:43. > :08:46.unsettled, pretty bad news for anybody who may be looking forward

:08:47. > :08:52.to the Christmas break. People may be heading off for the Christmas

:08:53. > :08:58.holidays and the advices, if you are heading out, check the forecast and

:08:59. > :09:01.the road conditions before you go. If the weather forecast later on.

:09:02. > :09:03.You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on the

:09:04. > :09:06.programme. Scottish and German universities

:09:07. > :09:10.team up to push the boundaries of quantum physics.

:09:11. > :09:13.In sport, one of the world's best swimmers will fulfil one of her

:09:14. > :09:17.ambitions in Glasgow this week. We'll hear all about it, and

:09:18. > :09:18.mistakes and how to learn from them with the Glasgow Warriors head

:09:19. > :09:34.coach. Jack and Sophie were once again the

:09:35. > :09:43.most popular Scottish baby names in 2014. James has moved into second

:09:44. > :09:54.place. Olivia is the second most popular general's name.

:09:55. > :10:01.Sounds familiar? For the sex of the year in a row, Jack is the most

:10:02. > :10:12.popular boys name in Scotland. -- sixth year. It kind of appealed to

:10:13. > :10:17.us but his big sister has a teddy bear called Jack so that is what she

:10:18. > :10:24.wanted to call him. While Lewis is slipping, names like Lucas and Harry

:10:25. > :10:32.are heading into the top ten. Olivia is number two. It is really the

:10:33. > :10:37.traditional names that are coming back end, that you would expect your

:10:38. > :10:46.grandparents to have. It is really nice. Let's take a look back in

:10:47. > :10:51.time, in the 1990s, Ryan was the most popular name. Back in the olden

:10:52. > :11:01.days it was John and Mary that were the number one baby names.

:11:02. > :11:06.Jack and Sophie might be the most popular names but the is only one in

:11:07. > :11:12.this entire nastily and there has never been a bigger range of names.

:11:13. > :11:23.It seems we are becoming more American in our taste with Cody and

:11:24. > :11:33.Cooper. Looking back it was a different story. In 1900, John and

:11:34. > :11:38.Mary topped the list. Four people have been taken to

:11:39. > :11:41.hospital after a serious road accident in Aberdeenshire. Two cars

:11:42. > :11:45.and a lorry were involved in the collision on the A96 Huntly bypass.

:11:46. > :11:48.Two men were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary - one by an RAF helicopter

:11:49. > :11:51.from Lossiemouth. Two women have been taken to Dr Gray's hospital in

:11:52. > :12:00.Elgin. The main Aberdeen to Inverness road was closed for most

:12:01. > :12:04.of the afternoon. The newly developed Haymarket

:12:05. > :12:08.railway station has opened to passengers in Edinburgh. It's one of

:12:09. > :12:10.the busiest stations in the UK, and, as Rob Flett reports, it's been

:12:11. > :12:14.completely transformed. The outside of the historic

:12:15. > :12:22.Haymarket station building is grade a listed but passengers have never

:12:23. > :12:28.enjoyed appropriate facilities. It looks fantastic, what a difference

:12:29. > :12:32.to what it was before, unexpected. I did not realise it would be ready in

:12:33. > :12:38.time like that. Hopefully the machines work! The new concourse is

:12:39. > :12:43.ten times larger than the old station. It is the second oldest

:12:44. > :12:49.station in the UK going back to 1840. It is extremely busy and if

:12:50. > :12:56.you have 4.1 million passengers coming through, they except that

:12:57. > :13:00.might expect a better service. Haymarket is the fourth busiest

:13:01. > :13:04.railway station in Scotland than has been kept running throughout the

:13:05. > :13:12.development. We built this off-site in the old car park and lifted it in

:13:13. > :13:17.using a 1000 tonne crane, we built it up over the macro levels during

:13:18. > :13:23.the night when the station was closed so passengers could come in

:13:24. > :13:28.in the morning. Until today, that footbridge was the only way to

:13:29. > :13:32.access the platforms year. It could get very cramped and it is now being

:13:33. > :13:47.deconstructed and will be removed on Christmas Day. Work at the station

:13:48. > :13:50.will continue until April. A former Scottish rugby international has

:13:51. > :13:57.been found guilty of sexually abusing two young girls in the 1980s

:13:58. > :14:02.and 1990s. Norman Pender began the abuse when one girl was just eight

:14:03. > :14:10.years old. He has been placed on the sex offences register. Marine

:14:11. > :14:12.accident investigators have made a series of safety recommendations

:14:13. > :14:22.after the sinking of a trawler in the North Sea last year.

:14:23. > :14:27.Investigators say the sinking was likely caused by a failure of the

:14:28. > :14:33.cooling system. An alarm was activated but went unnoticed. Three

:14:34. > :14:40.prisoners have lost their attempt to vote on the independence

:14:41. > :14:43.referendum. The three were seeking to overturn the blanket ban on the

:14:44. > :14:51.referendum franchise bill on prisoners voting. Lord Delaney ruled

:14:52. > :14:54.that the ban was not illegal in relation to a referendum. As

:14:55. > :14:58.Christmas revellers take to the streets, it is of special buses will

:14:59. > :15:05.keep them safe. The vehicles will be out in Edinburgh and Dundee tomorrow

:15:06. > :15:10.with alcohol advice teams on board. Minor injuries will be treated by

:15:11. > :15:14.the Red Cross. We can refer people to other partners if there are drink

:15:15. > :15:20.problems. We can try to help people in the long-term as well as short.

:15:21. > :15:26.The first Minister has announced that the inaugural winners of the

:15:27. > :15:33.Hex cries for physics. -- Higgs Prize. 18-year-old Lucy White from

:15:34. > :15:36.Edinburgh and 17-year-old Peter Rhodes will take part in a summer

:15:37. > :15:44.school at the research facility in Switzerland.

:15:45. > :15:52.More stories from your area, 24 hours a day, on our website.

:15:53. > :15:56.It is the first collaboration of its kind in the world. Backers say it

:15:57. > :16:03.confirms Scotland's Place is a world leader in fundamental science. It

:16:04. > :16:12.has been set up in conjunction with a prestigious German organisation,

:16:13. > :16:14.to push the boundaries of physics. When you buy a new camera or new

:16:15. > :16:19.mobile phone, you are generally concerned about excellence. With

:16:20. > :16:35.this one, the magic number is the excellence. Not megapixels, --

:16:36. > :16:40.pixels. They are sensitive to infrared light or deep ultraviolet

:16:41. > :16:44.light. It is not possible in a normal camera. But this one still

:16:45. > :16:53.can. In the same laboratory, another

:16:54. > :16:58.camera using just one pixel. It display possible by quantum physics.

:16:59. > :17:04.A quantum is the smallest lump of energy you can measure. Like

:17:05. > :17:11.electrons running down wires. Trouble is, they are particles, but

:17:12. > :17:16.behave like waves. You can measure where they are where they are going,

:17:17. > :17:21.but not both at the same time. The quantum world is nothing like the

:17:22. > :17:26.world we know. Strathclyde is another of the Scottish universities

:17:27. > :17:28.in the new partnership. It is taken into years to build this intricate

:17:29. > :17:37.machine to investigate the quantum world. -- taken them to years. It is

:17:38. > :17:45.an apparatus that can be used to trap on hold atoms and laser fields.

:17:46. > :17:56.Atoms can be held in the laser beams, similar to a marble in an egg

:17:57. > :17:58.carton. If you ask a supercomputer to work this out it would take

:17:59. > :18:02.longer than the life of the universe. The new partnership is

:18:03. > :18:08.designed to take things even further. Physics is a very

:18:09. > :18:14.collaborative subject. Experiments tend to be expensive. People have to

:18:15. > :18:20.work together. Collaboration is essential. This institute teams up

:18:21. > :18:26.the best international researchers in specific fields. It is a

:18:27. > :18:30.privilege to work with them. It is hoped this will establish a Scotland

:18:31. > :18:37.is a world leader in the quantum universe.

:18:38. > :18:45.She has been a badly behaved eight-year-old two generations of

:18:46. > :18:51.schoolchildren, but today Minnie the Minx turns 60 years old. She has

:18:52. > :19:05.more than lived up to her reputation.

:19:06. > :19:15.Girl power? Minnie the minx had far before the Spice Girls. This is the

:19:16. > :19:19.very first comicstrip. Very different to how it looks now. It is

:19:20. > :19:29.in black-and-white. Only a quarter of a page. Lisa Griffin looks after

:19:30. > :19:34.the archive at DC Thomson. You go from this black and white, small

:19:35. > :19:45.strip, quite quickly, into colour. Bright red. Half a page. Then very

:19:46. > :19:51.quickly, a full page. It is really obvious that the character has

:19:52. > :19:56.captured the audience imagination. Along with Dennis the Menace and the

:19:57. > :20:01.Bash Street kids, she became a legend. Created during the golden

:20:02. > :20:11.age of British comics. Now the responsibility of editor, Mike

:20:12. > :20:16.Sterling. What mayhem lies ahead? The safest thing we can say is that

:20:17. > :20:21.she is growing old disgracefully. But as far as we're concerned, she

:20:22. > :20:33.will always be nine years old. There is a Peter Pan failing to Beanotown.

:20:34. > :20:38.Feeling. -- in honour of her birthday she has been given the

:20:39. > :20:46.coveted front cover. Dennis the Menace is unavailable for comment.

:20:47. > :20:54.But Minnie the Minx herself looks chuffed!

:20:55. > :20:59.And now the sport. One of world swimming's biggest stars will fulfil

:21:00. > :21:07.an in Glasgow this week. Olympic and world champion, Katie Ladecki is

:21:08. > :21:16.competing for the USA in the Duel In The Pool.

:21:17. > :21:21.Tollcross is preparing for Europe to do battle with America in the water.

:21:22. > :21:27.But how does the competition work? The teams will compete in 15 events.

:21:28. > :21:33.13 individual, during which both teams can enter up to four swimmers.

:21:34. > :21:45.They will be two realise each for the men and women. -- relays. Points

:21:46. > :21:48.are awarded for placings. Some of the biggest names in the sport are

:21:49. > :21:56.here. The format is a real attraction. I am very excited about

:21:57. > :22:04.it. I watched the event growing up. It means a lot to me. The European

:22:05. > :22:09.all-stars have four from Scotland in their ranks, including Michael

:22:10. > :22:16.Jamieson. Friendships may be on hold, but still plenty of respect I

:22:17. > :22:24.am friends with Robbie and Michael. They are always in the finals. I

:22:25. > :22:27.think Michael will come over to the United States this year. I know that

:22:28. > :22:37.they train and work hard, perform and the extension. -- perform on the

:22:38. > :22:40.big stage. In rugby, Glasgow Warriors head coach, Gregor

:22:41. > :22:46.Townsend, admits he has made mistakes. He says he intends to

:22:47. > :22:49.learn from them. Glasgow Warriors are back in league business tomorrow

:22:50. > :22:56.after their interest in the European cup was ended. We are approaching

:22:57. > :23:04.the season to be jolly. But here at Scotstoun, you would be forgiven if

:23:05. > :23:10.you did not know it. Glasgow adding a slump. Sparkling early-season form

:23:11. > :23:18.is being by defeats. -- overshadowed by. We have learned how to better

:23:19. > :23:31.prepare, you are always going to get bums on the road. -- bumps. The

:23:32. > :23:38.recent run of results is alarming. For recent matches ending defeat.

:23:39. > :23:44.They currently position is built on winning their first five games of

:23:45. > :23:47.the season. I have made mistakes throughout the last two years of

:23:48. > :23:53.coaching. The important thing is learning from them. The Warriors

:23:54. > :23:59.need to start learning tomorrow night, at home against Treviso.

:24:00. > :24:06.Here's what else is happening across Scottish sport: Scotland forward

:24:07. > :24:10.David Denton has agreed a new three-year contract with Edinburgh

:24:11. > :24:17.rugby. He turned down offers from other teams. I had some decisions to

:24:18. > :24:26.make and spoke to other teams but at the end of the day, Edinburgh has

:24:27. > :24:31.been an awesome club for me. And in 19 international Cammie Smith has

:24:32. > :24:39.signed a new deal with Aberdeen. -- Under-19. When the manager took me

:24:40. > :24:46.aside, it was a straight yes. Myself and my family are delighted to sign

:24:47. > :24:51.up. Scotland women lost their final group match in the international

:24:52. > :24:59.tournament in Brazil, a 4-3 defeat to Chile. Eve Muirhead and Scotland

:25:00. > :25:04.have moved up to third in the latest world curling rankings. More on our

:25:05. > :25:13.website. That is all from me. And now the

:25:14. > :25:30.weather. It is just a wintry weather, but an

:25:31. > :25:38.awful lot of it. It has been lively of light. More on the way. Yellow

:25:39. > :25:42.warnings tonight. Snow showers continue to the north of the central

:25:43. > :25:49.belt, and the north-west. But a couple will make their way to the

:25:50. > :25:55.east. An ice risk right across the country, especially on untreated

:25:56. > :26:02.roads and surfaces. Breezy, but not the storm force gales of last night.

:26:03. > :26:08.Tomorrow, all eyes on the Atlantic. Wind and rain on the way. There will
