:00:15. > :00:21.Tonight, on Reporting Scotland. Three-year-old Mikaeel Koolar is
:00:22. > :00:24.still missing. Despite a huge search involving hundreds of volunteers
:00:25. > :00:28.across land and sea, it's now nearly two full days since the last
:00:29. > :00:38.sighting of him. Police admit they're gravely concerned. It is
:00:39. > :00:44.entirely possible that he has left the house of his own accord and all
:00:45. > :00:50.of our actions are attempting to cover that possibility. It is
:00:51. > :00:53.however entirely possible that he has become subject to a criminal
:00:54. > :00:55.act. Police are also investigating an
:00:56. > :00:59.unconfirmed sighting. Also this evening: Guilty - James
:01:00. > :01:02.Dunleavy killed his own mother, cut her up, put her body parts in a
:01:03. > :01:05.suitcase and buried her in an Edinburgh beauty spot.
:01:06. > :01:08.Rangers deny they're heading towards administration, as the players
:01:09. > :01:14.reject a wage cut to stem heavy losses.
:01:15. > :01:16.And would you wear this tartan? Well, our athletes will at this
:01:17. > :01:22.summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. We have an exclusive peek.
:01:23. > :01:25.Hundreds of members of the public today joined the search for
:01:26. > :01:29.3-year-old Mikaeel Kular, who's been missing from his home in Edinburgh
:01:30. > :01:32.for nearly two days. But tonight police said they couldn't rule out
:01:33. > :01:39.the possibility that he'd been the victim of a criminal act. Earlier
:01:40. > :01:42.they said they were investigating a sighting of a small boy matching
:01:43. > :01:45.Mikaeel's description not far from his home in Ferry Gait Crescent. A
:01:46. > :01:49.motorist saw the boy, apparently alone, running along West Pilton
:01:50. > :01:52.Gardens at 8:30am yesterday morning. Our reporter Steven Godden is
:01:53. > :02:01.outside Mikaeel's home tonight. Steven.
:02:02. > :02:08.It is almost fully two days since he was last seen at his home when he
:02:09. > :02:13.was put to bed by his mother. Since, an intense search to try and
:02:14. > :02:16.find him, but so far it has yielded nothing will stop police said there
:02:17. > :02:20.were a number of strands to the enquiry but admitted he could have
:02:21. > :02:26.an subject to what they call a criminal act. They appealed for the
:02:27. > :02:31.public to come forward with any information they have. The community
:02:32. > :02:37.rallied round once again today. United and worry, a community stands
:02:38. > :02:41.shoulder to shoulder, searching for Mikaeel Kular, whose disappearance
:02:42. > :02:49.is now measured in days rather than hours. This is a UK wide appeal. But
:02:50. > :02:53.the focus of the police operation remains here in the north of
:02:54. > :02:56.Edinburgh. Hundreds of locals helping in the hope of finding
:02:57. > :03:01.something that leads to the safe return of the child.
:03:02. > :03:08.People are positive, we would not be here if we were not. But obviously
:03:09. > :03:16.it is getting later. We're doing our bit. We'll stay out as long as we
:03:17. > :03:23.can. We have searched the woods, the
:03:24. > :03:27.seafront, right along really. He is a child, he is tiny, he is freezing,
:03:28. > :03:35.he is part of the community will stop I would travel any distance.
:03:36. > :03:39.Earlier, people gathered at a community centre, filling out forms,
:03:40. > :03:45.eager to get going on what for many was a second day of searching.
:03:46. > :03:51.Anything I can do to help, I thought I should do. Anybody who can come
:03:52. > :03:58.out needs to search their conscience. I can think of any
:03:59. > :04:05.reason not to come out. Lunchtime and news of a potential sighting at
:04:06. > :04:08.eight 30 a.m. Yesterday morning. A driver saw a small boy seemingly
:04:09. > :04:14.alone running alongside the road will stop police say that CCTV fits
:04:15. > :04:20.the description of Mikaeel Kular, but remain cautious. We need the
:04:21. > :04:25.help of the public to let us know if they saw something. Or indeed if
:04:26. > :04:31.they know it was their child, who could have fit the description of
:04:32. > :04:38.Mikaeel Kular. An appeal went out in Glasgow Central Station. He was in
:04:39. > :04:44.the same class as my son, I just can't imagine going through that.
:04:45. > :04:52.Outside the family home, police activity continued. Tonight, a shift
:04:53. > :05:00.in emphasis. It is entirely possible that he has become subject to a
:05:01. > :05:05.criminal act. The investigation has been established as a twin track too
:05:06. > :05:17.insular that that eventuality is fully explored. -- to ensure. Police
:05:18. > :05:20.say they are gravely concerned but insisted the search will continue. A
:05:21. > :05:26.number of things came out of the news conference. Firstly, Mikaeel
:05:27. > :05:34.Kular had not been to nursery since Christmas. He had a chest infection.
:05:35. > :05:38.As for the potential sighting, revealed around lunchtime, there has
:05:39. > :05:43.been a good response but police say there is much more work to be done.
:05:44. > :05:48.The overarching message from the police is that they still want
:05:49. > :05:51.people to come forward and help. They say that the answer lies in
:05:52. > :05:55.what people have seen. So they want to know.
:05:56. > :05:58.A Dublin man has been convicted of killing his mother and then cutting
:05:59. > :06:01.up her body, before burying her remains at an Edinburgh beauty spot.
:06:02. > :06:03.40-year-old Seamus Dunleavy was found guilty of the culpable
:06:04. > :06:08.homicide of 66-year-old Philomena Dunleavy on the grounds of
:06:09. > :06:10.diminished responsibility. The discovery of Mrs Dunleavy's remains
:06:11. > :06:20.led to an international investigation to discover her
:06:21. > :06:30.identity. Rob Flett reports. This is James Dunleavy. Most people know him
:06:31. > :06:34.as Seamus. He committed a crime that is hard to comprehend. The discovery
:06:35. > :06:43.of a skull prompted a major police investigation. But repeated appeals
:06:44. > :06:47.for information led nowhere. I was convinced it was important to widen
:06:48. > :06:54.the net, after the first week. My gut instinct was that it was local,
:06:55. > :06:57.that turned out to be the case. The breakthrough came following a
:06:58. > :07:03.remarkable facial construction at Dundee University. The image made
:07:04. > :07:07.sense to me in relation to the skull. We are pleased that the
:07:08. > :07:13.depiction was close in terms of resemblance. The dead woman was
:07:14. > :07:17.quickly identified as Philomena Dunleavy from Dublin, who had
:07:18. > :07:28.visited her son near the spot where the body was found. Seamus Dunleavy
:07:29. > :07:31.was arrested and charged with beheading her, cutting off the
:07:32. > :07:37.body, and putting the remains in a suitcase, which he took, just a few
:07:38. > :07:44.hundred metres down this road to dense woodland, where he buried it.
:07:45. > :07:49.Philomena was a regular visitor to Edinburgh and her son was well known
:07:50. > :07:55.in the post office alone his flat. Staff say that they are loving
:07:56. > :08:01.relationship turned sour. She was very upset that events, his mother
:08:02. > :08:08.left his father, moved in with a new partner in Dublin, he was very
:08:09. > :08:11.angry. The High Court heard that Mr Dunleavy told friends that he had
:08:12. > :08:15.heard voices in his head, that he might be evil, that he had done
:08:16. > :08:21.something bad will stop prosecutors said that the evidence was
:08:22. > :08:27.circumstantial but came together like the strands of a cable. He was
:08:28. > :08:31.found guilty of culpable homicide, with diminished responsibility. It
:08:32. > :08:37.is ten years since his brother was gunned down in Dublin, further
:08:38. > :08:46.tragedy is the father, senior and the left, watched another son sent
:08:47. > :08:51.to jail. -- seen here on the left. You're watching Reporting Scotland
:08:52. > :08:54.from the BBC. Still to come on the programme: An exclusive look at the
:08:55. > :08:57.Tartan specially designed for Scotland's Commonwealth Games team.
:08:58. > :09:01.In sport: Ally McCoist says he backs his players 100% after their refusal
:09:02. > :09:03.to take a pay cut. More on that. And Andy Murray tells us why his next
:09:04. > :09:12.opponent is one of a kind. Earlier this week, we reported more
:09:13. > :09:15.than half a million people were stopped and searched by police in
:09:16. > :09:19.Scotland between April and December last year. The figure was slightly
:09:20. > :09:21.down on the previous year but research from Edinburgh University,
:09:22. > :09:25.seen by Reporting Scotland, shows the tactic is being used four times
:09:26. > :09:28.as often here as in England and Wales. Our Home Affairs
:09:29. > :09:34.Correspondent, Reevel Alderson has been reading the report.
:09:35. > :09:37.Police stopping people on the street and searching them is a highly
:09:38. > :09:40.controversial tactic in England and Wales, with members of black and
:09:41. > :09:43.ethnic minority communities overwhelmingly targeted. But here in
:09:44. > :09:47.Scotland it's becoming much more widely used. Research carried out by
:09:48. > :09:53.Edinburgh University shows 86 people out of each 1,000 in Scotland were
:09:54. > :09:58.stopped and searched in 2010. The figure for England and Wales was 17;
:09:59. > :10:02.less than a quarter. But even these figures hide the shocking disparity.
:10:03. > :10:07.In 2010, 123 people out of each 1,000 were stopped by the old
:10:08. > :10:13.Strathclyde Police. The London figure was 59, less than half. Yet
:10:14. > :10:23.look at this figure - 276 - in the year before Strathclyde Police was
:10:24. > :10:27.merged. This is how police justify stop and
:10:28. > :10:35.search. Knives taken off the streets. Drinks which cause
:10:36. > :10:41.anti-social behaviour and crime. They say that falling crime figures
:10:42. > :10:45.are due to stop and search. That is supported by this family, still
:10:46. > :10:51.mourning the death of 25-year-old, Sean, stabbed to death in the
:10:52. > :10:57.street. It saves families going through what we went through. If
:10:58. > :11:03.they are called beforehand, taken away, sentenced, the word goes
:11:04. > :11:09.about. Stop and search, it will deter you from taking knives out in
:11:10. > :11:12.the first place. The use of stop and search is
:11:13. > :11:16.declining south of the border, because of criticism that black and
:11:17. > :11:21.ethnic minority communities were disproportionately targeted.
:11:22. > :11:25.Edinburgh University research shows that has not happened in Scotland,
:11:26. > :11:29.but nevertheless the massive rise in stop and searches has gone without
:11:30. > :11:37.much criticism. One academic said that is not surprising. It is
:11:38. > :11:44.focused on young white men in deprived areas who have no political
:11:45. > :11:52.voice of people to speak on their behalf, so it is no supplies it has
:11:53. > :11:58.not become political. -- surprise. Wider use could affect the way the
:11:59. > :12:00.community react to the police, and the Childrens Commissioner has
:12:01. > :12:05.expressed concern at the targeting of young people. But the charity,
:12:06. > :12:12.children in Scotland, support the attack six, sing young people are --
:12:13. > :12:24.support the tactics, sing young people are proportionately higher
:12:25. > :12:28.victims of crime. Human remains found in Argyll last
:12:29. > :12:30.week have been confirmed by police as those of Russian student Yulia
:12:31. > :12:33.Solodyankin. The 22-year-old Edinburgh University physics student
:12:34. > :12:36.was reported missing in June last year. Remains were discovered in a
:12:37. > :12:39.remote location near Arrochar last Thursday. Police said her family had
:12:40. > :12:41.been informed and there were no suspicious circumstances in
:12:42. > :12:44.connection with the death. Scotland will pay more for and get
:12:45. > :12:47.less from European Union membership if it becomes an independent
:12:48. > :12:50.country, according to the Foreign Secretary, William Hague. But SNP
:12:51. > :12:52.ministers accuse the UK government of scaremongering. Here's our
:12:53. > :12:56.Political Correspondent, Glenn Campbell. Whether it is Alex Salmond
:12:57. > :13:01.in China, or his predecessor, Jack McConnell, in Malawi, all first
:13:02. > :13:07.ministers seek to develop trade, aid, and friendly overseas
:13:08. > :13:11.relations. But under devolution, it is ultimately the job of the UK
:13:12. > :13:15.government to represent Scottish interests internationally. How might
:13:16. > :13:23.independence change our standing in the world?
:13:24. > :13:31.I think yes. It would do us a power of good. We would have our own
:13:32. > :13:38.decision to spend our money. I want it, you don't.
:13:39. > :13:45.Sometimes family members are just as far apart as the Scottish and UK
:13:46. > :13:49.government. In Glasgow, William Hague and Danny Alexander suggested
:13:50. > :13:55.that negotiating European Union membership could be a setback. It
:13:56. > :14:00.would not be simple. And at what price would come? You would end up
:14:01. > :14:05.paying more to be in the European Union, getting less from it. But SNP
:14:06. > :14:11.ministers are confident about prospects. As an independent
:14:12. > :14:14.European Union member state could stand up for our national interest
:14:15. > :14:18.better than the UK government ever does, and get the best deal for
:14:19. > :14:26.Scotland. It is one of the real benefits. In Madrid, the Spanish
:14:27. > :14:30.Minister highlighted the UK view that an independent Scotland would
:14:31. > :14:33.find itself outside of the European Union, but neither he or the EU
:14:34. > :14:41.president can categorically rule it out. Voters will choose between
:14:42. > :14:49.independence or continued membership of the UK in eight months time.

:15:03. > :15:05.A third person has died after a crash on the A1 near the Torness
:15:06. > :15:08.Power Station in East Lothian. The accident, involving two cars,
:15:09. > :15:11.happened a week ago. The latest person to die was one of the

:15:16. > :15:18.other car, Dawn Morris, and her rear seat passenger, Claire Jamieson,

:16:19. > :16:21.Good evening. The Rangers manager, Ally McCoist,
:16:22. > :16:25.says he's backing his players 100% following their decision to reject a
:16:26. > :16:33.wage cut. The proposal was part of cost-cutting efforts as the club
:16:34. > :16:39.attempts to stem heavy losses. As our senior football reporter
:16:40. > :16:42.explains, Rangers say there is no chance the club will go into
:16:43. > :16:46.administration. These players have made it clear
:16:47. > :16:50.they are unwilling to bear the brunt of cost-cutting at Ibrox. Today
:16:51. > :16:56.their manager came out in support, saying, I can assure everyone that
:16:57. > :17:01.the players have my 100% backing. What with the playing budget having
:17:02. > :17:10.to come down, no big cuts means players will have to be sold, which
:17:11. > :17:15.presents its own problems. How many marketable assets have Rangers got
:17:16. > :17:20.now? I would say only one, Wallace. He might bring in ?1 million or so.
:17:21. > :17:25.But the fact is that he does not want to leave, so you could argue
:17:26. > :17:29.that they have no marketable assets at all. It is two years since
:17:30. > :17:34.Rangers went to do administration and the biggest question raised by
:17:35. > :17:38.these cuts is, is this a precursor to administration happening again?
:17:39. > :17:42.The chairman has said that is not the case, but there is clearly a lot
:17:43. > :17:47.of work to be done on the financial side here at Ibrox. What is certain
:17:48. > :17:52.is that Rangers will win a game need fans to dig deep, which at least
:17:53. > :17:58.some, in the circumstances, are willing to do. Even if they increase
:17:59. > :18:04.the price of a season ticket I will buy it for me and my family. It is
:18:05. > :18:10.not even about football, it is about Rangers. That name, Rangers, that is
:18:11. > :18:14.what he were here to support. But with season ticket renewal time
:18:15. > :18:19.several months away, savings are required now. Andy Murray is back in

:18:42. > :18:45.be another good test for me. Now for a quick look at what else is
:18:46. > :18:47.happening across Scottish sport. Aberdeenshire's Andrew Musgrave has
:18:48. > :18:51.shocked the people of Norway by winning the sprint in their

:19:16. > :19:18.There's a remote possibilty Edinburgh rugby will reach the last

:19:23. > :19:30.Munster, while Saracens, Cardiff Blues and Northampton Saints all
:19:31. > :19:33.have to lose. We would love to continue to play in Europe and we

:19:36. > :19:39.Motherwell are hoping to record their seventh win on the spin - for

:20:32. > :20:35.champion Hannah Miley says, "It makes the Scottish athletes stand
:20:36. > :20:39.tall." What is she referring to? Well, the parade uniform which is

:20:48. > :20:55.Lewis. Back in 1954, there was not a kilt
:20:56. > :21:00.to be seen. But come the 1970 Edinburgh games... COMMENTATOR: A
:21:01. > :21:06.girl is wearing the specially designed top. Tartan made an
:21:07. > :21:11.appearance and since then the national attire has been very much
:21:12. > :21:17.on show. It is no different for this summer, and here is a first glimpse
:21:18. > :21:30.of the 2014 tartan from balloons of the aisle mill in Aberdeenshire. --
:21:31. > :21:36.from the weaving looms. The blue is from the spring water in Battersea

:21:59. > :22:08.the bold and bright colours may surprise some. It is kind of
:22:09. > :22:17.girlish. To pink for you? Yes. More red and blue in there. It is nice
:22:18. > :22:23.and bright. I would probably wear it for the Commonwealth, yeah. The
:22:24. > :22:26.designer will also create the team's Parade outfit. The men will
:22:27. > :22:33.wear kilts but she will create a slightly different look for the
:22:34. > :22:39.women. For the girls, for it to be just taken off from what the guys'
:22:40. > :22:44.design has been is like being second best, so the fact that now the
:22:45. > :22:48.designer has decided to make two separate things is really quite
:22:49. > :22:53.exciting. It is unique and special. So a more female friendly style for
:22:54. > :22:57.the women in the team, which will be similar to the men's but with a
:22:58. > :23:03.modern twist. So what is it worth for me not to
:23:04. > :23:13.ask you what you think of it? I quite like it. Still a number of
:23:14. > :23:18.showers across many parts of the country tonight but they are slowly
:23:19. > :23:24.fading away. Where the sky is clear we will see a patchy frost, maybe
:23:25. > :23:34.icy patches as well. Still wet and windy. Day four or five for
:23:35. > :23:39.Shetland. Gales through the weekend. The countryside may be lower than
:23:40. > :23:44.freezing. Tomorrow showers towards Kintyre but elsewhere largely a dry
:23:45. > :23:47.start but by mid to late morning rain works into Galloway, the
:23:48. > :23:52.Borders, the central belt and then further North as we head through to
:23:53. > :23:55.the middle part of the afternoon. So it is a deteriorating picture and by
:23:56. > :24:02.mid afternoon, temperature wise, six or seven, fairly cloudy and dump.
:24:03. > :24:11.Some drier slots for Glasgow and Edinburgh at times. The rain is
:24:12. > :24:14.heavier in towards southern Aberdeenshire and other areas.
:24:15. > :24:19.Passing showers for Orkney and passing rent for Shetland and gales
:24:20. > :24:24.continue. If you are hill walking or climbing, the North West is best
:24:25. > :24:32.some sunshine. After a dry start it turns damp elsewhere. On the eastern

:24:41. > :24:45.thinking about skiing tomorrow, you will probably get away with a dry
:24:46. > :24:49.morning but towards the afternoon, slowly turning wet. The rest of the
:24:50. > :24:53.afternoon, into the evening and overnight, the rain continuing to
:24:54. > :24:57.slowly make its way northwards, fragmented all the time. If we look
:24:58. > :25:01.at the big picture we can see what is happening overnight towards the
:25:02. > :25:06.second part of the weekend. The rain, connected to this low pressure
:25:07. > :25:09.in the Atlantic, and this cold front bringing an area of heavy rain
:25:10. > :25:14.probably Saturday night to the central belt, something to bear in
:25:15. > :25:18.mind if you are out on the town. By Sunday morning, white across
:25:19. > :25:24.Aberdeenshire, down towards Dundee and up towards Inverness. South West
:25:25. > :25:28.of year, dry and bright. One or two passing showers. Some sunshine.
:25:29. > :25:34.Monday, the rain still in play across Shetland. Still blowing a
:25:35. > :25:37.gale. Elsewhere, clarity. Temperatures down a notch. Sunday is
:25:38. > :25:40.the better of the two days this weekend.
:25:41. > :25:45.Now back to our main story - the search for three-year-old Mikaeel
:25:46. > :25:48.Kular, who's now been missing for almost two days. Tonight police said
:25:49. > :25:51.they couldn't rule out the possibility that he'd been the
:25:52. > :25:54.subject of a criminal act. Our reporter Laura Maxwell is at the
:25:55. > :25:59.headquarters of Police Scotland in Edinburgh tonight. What's the
:26:00. > :26:04.latest, Laura? It is safe to say that the mood here
:26:05. > :26:07.is subdued. Officers now say they are gravely concerned about the
:26:08. > :26:11.well-being of Mikaeel Kular given the length of time he has been
:26:12. > :26:15.missing. There has been a huge police presence on the streets of
:26:16. > :26:21.the North of Edinburgh during the day. Everywhere you go you can see
:26:22. > :26:26.officers searching for the missing three-year-old. Police cars, vans,
:26:27. > :26:29.dog units moving around the city. Officers have said they are keeping
:26:30. > :26:37.an open mind about what might have happened. Tonight they admitted that
:26:38. > :26:41.it is entirely possible that Mikaeel has been the subject of a criminal
:26:42. > :26:44.act. They are running a twin approach to the operation, on the
:26:45. > :26:49.one hand a massive search and on the other hand they are repairing and
:26:50. > :26:54.investigating the possibility that a criminal act may have happened.
:26:55. > :27:00.Tonight the search will continue and they are asking anyone with
:27:01. > :27:07.information to contact them. Thanks. Now a reminder of tonight's
:27:08. > :27:10.main news: A Dublin man has been convicted of killing his mother and
:27:11. > :27:12.then cutting up her body before burying her remains at an Edinburgh
:27:13. > :27:15.beauty spot. 40-year old Seamus Dunleavy was
:27:16. > :27:17.found guilty of the culpable homicide of 66-year-old Philomena
:27:18. > :27:19.Dunleavy on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
:27:20. > :27:23.The Labour Leader, Ed Miliband, has outlined his plans to break up
:27:24. > :27:26.Britain's high street banks if his party wins the next election. He
:27:27. > :27:29.says it's time for a reckoning with the industry, and that a Labour
:27:30. > :27:32.Government would create at least two so-called challenger banks. The
:27:33. > :27:38.Government says it's done that already.
:27:39. > :27:42.Back at HPN and just after the ten o'clock news. Goodbye. -- back at
