:00:09. > :00:12.Good evening. Opponents of an independent Scotland say the "yes"

:00:13. > :00:15.campaign has been dealt a "significant blow" - because of

:00:16. > :00:18.comments by the president of the European Commission. Jose Manuel

:00:19. > :00:21.Barroso said an application from Scotland to join the European Union

:00:22. > :00:25.would need the approval of all member states, and that would be

:00:26. > :00:28.difficult. The Scottish National Party dismissed his remarks, saying

:00:29. > :00:37.Scots should not allow themselves to be swayed by the political agendas

:00:38. > :00:42.of others. Here's Andrew Kerr. A lack of unity in the European

:00:43. > :00:44.Union could be a blog today independent Scotland's membership.

:00:45. > :00:47.The president of the European Commission has said that Scotland

:00:48. > :00:53.would not automatically be a new member. He seemed to go further

:00:54. > :00:58.today. He pointed to the possibility of other states vetoing EU

:00:59. > :01:04.membership. It is a new country. I believe it is going to be extremely

:01:05. > :01:07.difficult if not impossible, a new member state coming out of one of

:01:08. > :01:11.our countries, getting the agreement, but having said that, it

:01:12. > :01:13.is for the British people and the Scottish people, in their

:01:14. > :01:18.referendum, to decide about their future. Was Manuel Barroso made

:01:19. > :01:23.particular reference to the government of Spain, well-known for

:01:24. > :01:27.their opposition to independence in Catalonia and the Basque country. It

:01:28. > :01:31.intervention was dismissed by the Scottish Government. I think

:01:32. > :01:38.President Barroso's remarks are preposterous. He has said that his

:01:39. > :01:42.position is linking Scotland's position to Kosovo. Scotland has

:01:43. > :01:46.been a member of the EU for 40 years. Comments were music to the

:01:47. > :01:51.ears for those opposed to Scottish independence. It is an advantage of

:01:52. > :01:57.the European Union to have members within it, but what Jose Manuel

:01:58. > :02:01.Barroso was saying is that the negotiations that take place will be

:02:02. > :02:06.anything but plain sailing. They could drag on for years. As the

:02:07. > :02:08.president said, it is up to the Scottish people to decide their

:02:09. > :02:17.future but his comments are fuelling that debate, as Scottish people pour

:02:18. > :02:21.over what he said. A 78-year-old cyclist has died after

:02:22. > :02:24.being involved in a collision with a car on the Kirkliston to South

:02:25. > :02:29.Queensferry road, in Edinburgh, this morning. Police say it involved the

:02:30. > :02:32.man's mountain bike and a Mercedes. At the Winter Olympics in Sochi,

:02:33. > :02:35.David Murdoch's team lost their penultimate match of the round robin

:02:36. > :02:39.stage at the Winter Olympics - going down 7-6 to Norway. The defeat for

:02:40. > :02:42.the Team GB rink leaves them on five wins and three defeats. With four

:02:43. > :02:45.teams vying for three remaining semifinal spots, they have a crucial

:02:46. > :02:48.match against China tomorrow in their final group match. They art

:02:49. > :02:58.area Lee good team. We ran them tight at the end. Tomorrow you are

:02:59. > :03:00.playing China? Yes. We need to win everything from here on in.

:03:01. > :03:03.An exhibition at Glasgow University is celebrating the work of a

:03:04. > :03:07.Scottish Italian artist, who grew up in poverty in the city after his

:03:08. > :03:11.family fled Mussolini's Italy to seek refuge in Scotland. The

:03:12. > :03:13.playwright Harold Pinter described Antonio Pacitto's art as 'deeply

:03:14. > :03:16.impressive and very important'. The show includes drawings, prints and

:03:17. > :03:22.ceramics. Suzanne Allan has the story.

:03:23. > :03:27.This is Antonio Pacitto on the right. Just six years old but

:03:28. > :03:35.already he felt like an outsider, a refugee in a strange land. Three

:03:36. > :03:39.years earlier, his family had been forced to leave Italy as socialists,

:03:40. > :03:45.they were chased out by fascists. Scotland was there a safe haven.

:03:46. > :03:49.This is one of his Montana more series... The upheaval affected his

:03:50. > :03:55.whole life. Forever identifying with the displaced. The passion for

:03:56. > :04:02.social justice, the identification with people who were homeless, who

:04:03. > :04:08.were victims. Victims of injustice. That was there throughout his life.

:04:09. > :04:13.As a 15-year-old, he was already influenced by Glasgow's people and

:04:14. > :04:20.places. He loved the place, the people and the warmth and humanity

:04:21. > :04:27.of the place and its resilience. Antonio Pacitto's career was shaped

:04:28. > :04:30.by the fact he felt he had been a untimely ripped from Italy when his

:04:31. > :04:35.parents were trying to escape the fascists. When he came to Glasgow,

:04:36. > :04:40.what he found was a warm welcome and he felt the city shared in his

:04:41. > :04:43.beliefs. In the SPL, Celtic have reaffirmed

:04:44. > :04:47.their 21-point lead over Aberdeen, with a 3-0 win against St Johnstone.

:04:48. > :04:50.The goals all came courtesy of Irishman Anthony Stokes - his third

:04:51. > :04:53.hat trick for the club. Now Gillian's ready and waiting at

:04:54. > :04:56.the weather map. A lovely day for most today, Gillian - fills you with

:04:57. > :04:56.hope that spring is round the corner.

:04:57. > :05:03.most today, Gillian I wish. Let's hope you make the most

:05:04. > :05:06.of today. Some good spells of sunshine around today, the clear

:05:07. > :05:11.skies will make for a cold night tonight. Widespread frost, risk of

:05:12. > :05:16.ice on untreated surfaces, but we will lose the showers in the far

:05:17. > :05:20.north. Temperatures as low as minus four Celsius in some areas.

:05:21. > :05:24.Recovering slightly towards the morning as rain comes in from the

:05:25. > :05:28.south-west. Tomorrow is a return to recent form, low pressure takes

:05:29. > :05:32.charge once again. We will be without the very strong winds but we

:05:33. > :05:36.will have a lot of cloud and rain pushing northward across the

:05:37. > :05:42.country, snow for the hills but to low levels around Inverness and

:05:43. > :05:43.Murray for a time in the afternoon. A cold fuel everywhere tomorrow.

:05:44. > :05:46.That is the forecast. A cold fuel everywhere tomorrow.

:05:47. > :05:49.That's all for now. Our late news is especially late tonight - around

:05:50. > :05:53.11.20. If you're staying up to watch the BAFTAs, enjoy the show and hope

:05:54. > :05:54.you can join us then. Whatever you're doing, have a very good

:05:55. > :06:01.evening. Until then, have a very good

:06:02. > :06:20.evening. Whilst we are talking about wet and

:06:21. > :06:21.windy weather in the week ahead, we will
