:01:11. > :01:16.Good evening. A senior Scottish doctor has warned that NHS staff are
:01:17. > :01:19.being placed under almost intolerable pressure. The outgoing
:01:20. > :01:23.President of the Royal College of Physicians is claiming that cuts in
:01:24. > :01:26.the number of hospital beds increasing admissions and workforce
:01:27. > :01:31.shortages are under mining the quality of care.
:01:32. > :01:35.The latest Scottish Government figures show a big increase in the
:01:36. > :01:39.number of patients waiting to leave hospital after treatment. But they
:01:40. > :01:44.also show the waiting time target for treatment within 18 weeks of
:01:45. > :01:47.referral is largely being met. And there's been a small increase in the
:01:48. > :01:50.number of people working in the NHS in Scotland.
:01:51. > :01:56.More from our Health Correspondent, Eleanor Bradford.
:01:57. > :02:02.The NHS is facing increasing demand from a population that's getting
:02:03. > :02:06.older. Today, the outgoing President of one of Scotland's medical
:02:07. > :02:11.colleges said staff were now working under almost intolerable pressure.
:02:12. > :02:21.And the NHS in Scotland risks falling behind England, the said.
:02:22. > :02:29.The NHS is under pressure most of the months of the year. In England,
:02:30. > :02:32.the scandal surrounding the unnecessary deaths in
:02:33. > :02:34.Mid-Staffordshire led to the NHS adopting new standards of care
:02:35. > :02:40.there. This doctor is calling for the same changes here. But some say
:02:41. > :02:47.the NHS in Scotland is already performing better than England.
:02:48. > :02:51.How can I help you... This medical Ward at St John's Hospital in
:02:52. > :02:54.Livingston Sears 900 patients a month. Five years ago, it was
:02:55. > :02:59.considering expanding in order to cope. But staff improved care and
:03:00. > :03:03.cut the death rate by monitoring their performance more closely.
:03:04. > :03:07.There's been a huge improvement because there are more discussions
:03:08. > :03:11.with the whole nursing team. We do what's called a safety brief every
:03:12. > :03:14.day so we talk about the quality indicators every day, how we can
:03:15. > :03:19.improve our performance, what we can do better at and what we are doing
:03:20. > :03:23.well at. You need a method to implement the standards... It's part
:03:24. > :03:26.of a patient safety programme which Scotland's chief doctor says is
:03:27. > :03:31.already leading the way. If you look at what NHS England have
:03:32. > :03:35.just decided to do, they have decided to run similar
:03:36. > :03:38.collaboratives to the Scottish patient safety programme across NHS
:03:39. > :03:41.England because they have decided safety is a challenge that they are
:03:42. > :03:44.not meeting. I don't think we have solved it or
:03:45. > :03:48.fixed it, but the Scottish safety patient programme, which you have
:03:49. > :03:50.seen in this ward, is an example to other countries about how that
:03:51. > :03:57.transformation might work. There is no doubt this system needs
:03:58. > :04:03.to work to cope -- cope to work with uncreasing demand. It's arguably
:04:04. > :04:06.already in a better place than other NHS Trusts in the UK.
:04:07. > :04:13.They have already been to Downing Street to be congratulated on their
:04:14. > :04:18.achievement. Now Britain's mens and women's curling teams have flown
:04:19. > :04:23.into Edinburgh Airport to enenthusiastic welcome. Cameron
:04:24. > :04:27.Buttle is there. As you can see, they are setting up
:04:28. > :04:34.for what's hopefully the last press call of the day for these guys. Team
:04:35. > :04:38.GB went after three medals, they got four tworks from the Scots curlers.
:04:39. > :04:51.They arrived them to a very warm welcome. The women's team, with
:04:52. > :04:54.their bronze medals,s the men also. So far, there hasn't been much
:04:55. > :04:58.chance for these guys to relax and it seems like the party is just
:04:59. > :05:03.getting started. Here thisser in all their glory...
:05:04. > :05:07.The games may be over but a busy day in the media spotlight begins. Easy
:05:08. > :05:11.to handle when you are Olympic silver medallists. We look at
:05:12. > :05:14.performances over the two weeks and it was incredible, the hard work we
:05:15. > :05:19.put in to get there. Not everyone can win the golds. We'll have that
:05:20. > :05:26.silver medal now and are really pleased. Huge expectations of both
:05:27. > :05:30.teams. European and world titles already were secured. For men, a
:05:31. > :05:37.shot of gold ended in resounding defeat to a silver.
:05:38. > :05:42.For the women, crushed at not making their final, but a gritty fightback
:05:43. > :05:46.won them bronze. Britain have won the bronze.
:05:47. > :05:50.Regardless of the colour of the medal, the national recognition for
:05:51. > :05:56.their success and the huge lift of the profile of their sport is a huge
:05:57. > :06:00.boost. Congratulations, well done.
:06:01. > :06:04.Thousands more are signing up to try curling across Scotland. As for the
:06:05. > :06:09.medal winners, they know this is their time to shine and they hope to
:06:10. > :06:14.make the most of it. Delighted to say I'm joined by the
:06:15. > :06:18.two team skips, eve Muirhead, is it God to be back? It's great to be
:06:19. > :06:22.back in Scotland and what a welcome we got tonight in Edinburgh, the
:06:23. > :06:27.great to see so many people come out to see us home after a great cupful
:06:28. > :06:31.of weeks out in Sochi. Massive disappointment when you didn't make
:06:32. > :06:34.the final, but you came back with a bronze, has that settled in now and
:06:35. > :06:42.have the bad feelings gone? Yes, it was a roller coaster week. You lose
:06:43. > :06:46.that chance to get to the final and chase your dream and get the gold
:06:47. > :06:50.but I think it showed what greatest athletes we were managing to bounce
:06:51. > :06:55.back, straight back on ice the next morning and win the bronze. It was a
:06:56. > :06:58.great couple of weeks. David, a huge buzz about the sport. You are
:06:59. > :07:03.talking about going curling crazy, thousands turning up for the sport.
:07:04. > :07:08.It must be great to know you created that boost? Incredible. We hoped to
:07:09. > :07:11.put on a great performance and it really captured the nation, everyone
:07:12. > :07:16.got into curling and wanted to know what was going on and who the team
:07:17. > :07:21.were. It was fantastic. Was that surprising to for you? A little bit.
:07:22. > :07:24.We stay on the social media throughout the weeks and had a
:07:25. > :07:28.feeling about the buzz back home. People are starting to get into it
:07:29. > :07:32.and talk about it. It's special knowing that was happening. There
:07:33. > :07:38.have been some questions about you're future. Any decisions made?
:07:39. > :07:42.Not yet. I'm going on a break. Obviously I need to speak to the
:07:43. > :07:46.guys and funding partners about going forward. It's a real young
:07:47. > :07:50.team that's done so well and we want to have a good think about that and
:07:51. > :07:54.the gold is an option in four years' time. Thank you very much and
:07:55. > :07:57.congratulations once more. You get that feeling that the party is just
:07:58. > :08:01.getting started here. Many thanks.
:08:02. > :08:05.Police have launched an inquiry after a man claiming to be the
:08:06. > :08:11.parent of a primary six child called a school in what appears to be an
:08:12. > :08:16.attempt to abduct her. The man asked staff at St Mary's Primary to tell
:08:17. > :08:20.the tend-year-old girl not to take the bus home as he'd collect her.
:08:21. > :08:25.Our report Searle at the school tonight. This happened just before
:08:26. > :08:30.home time last Thursday. A man phoned the school here. He was
:08:31. > :08:35.pretending to be the dad of the girl who's in primary six. He told staff
:08:36. > :08:40.to tell her not the take the bus home but that he would come and
:08:41. > :08:44.collect her instead. Staff were immediately suspicious about this
:08:45. > :08:48.call. They phoned the girl's real dad who was able to confirm that was
:08:49. > :08:53.a bogus call. It's understood that the man got the girl's details
:08:54. > :08:57.through a social net working site. The parents have been sent home this
:08:58. > :09:01.letter by the school. In it, it warns of the dangers of children
:09:02. > :09:07.leaving their personal details online and it asks mums and dads to
:09:08. > :09:11.be particularly vigilant of apps such as talking Tom and talking
:09:12. > :09:15.Angela where children might be asked to leave information about
:09:16. > :09:23.themselves. In this letter, it says staff should
:09:24. > :09:29.be aware of what happened but she asks parents to be reassured because
:09:30. > :09:35.it says the school has robust procedures and wants to ensure the
:09:36. > :09:38.safety and well-being of pupils. A spokesperson for Renfrewshire says
:09:39. > :09:43.that the prompt action here prompted what could be a very serious child
:09:44. > :09:45.protection incident. Police Scotland say they are continuing their
:09:46. > :09:50.inquiries into what happened here and that they are working with the
:09:51. > :09:56.school and the council to ensure the safety of the children. . You are
:09:57. > :10:00.watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come.
:10:01. > :10:05.They'll run a half marathon every day. We meet the special police unit

:10:26. > :10:32.Britain's oil and gas industry has warned it faces its biggest
:10:33. > :10:36.challenge in 50 years due to the low levels of exploration.
:10:37. > :10:40.Costs of production have also been rising steeply though the industry's
:10:41. > :10:43.annual survey of offshore activity has found investment remains very
:10:44. > :10:47.high. Our business and economy editor
:10:48. > :10:50.Douglas Fraser is here with more. Thank you. As one of Britain's
:10:51. > :10:55.biggest industries, the positive news for oil and gas is that it's
:10:56. > :10:59.maintaining high levels of investment this year. At ?13
:11:00. > :11:04.billion, that's down from last year's record. Recent sharp falls in
:11:05. > :11:08.output slowed last year, down by 8%. And, due to that record investment,
:11:09. > :11:11.new fields are coming on stream this year so that production line is
:11:12. > :11:17.expected to rise again. But there are troubling signs too.
:11:18. > :11:20.Only 15 exploration wells drilled last year, that is seen as falling
:11:21. > :11:24.far short of what is necessary to sustain the industry. The reasons
:11:25. > :11:29.for that is that there are not enough rigs, funding is tight and,
:11:30. > :11:32.well it's been rather stormy. You remember that we have had
:11:33. > :11:38.extremely bad weathered this year. We are operating offshore in some of
:11:39. > :11:41.the most hostile waters in the globe, therefore there's been a lot
:11:42. > :11:45.of waiting on weather which has impacted too. The industry report
:11:46. > :11:50.says oil firms are facing rapidly rising production costs. The average
:11:51. > :11:55.spend for extracting a barrel of oil was up by 27% in only a year. The
:11:56. > :11:59.accelerating increase in costs is causing operators, such as Centrica,
:12:00. > :12:04.to focus future investments on other countries. There's plenty of life
:12:05. > :12:10.left in the old dog yet. There's just a case that in recent years, we
:12:11. > :12:15.haven't been exploring and identifying the new assets and new
:12:16. > :12:18.fields that we know are there or strongly suspect are there nearly
:12:19. > :12:23.fast enough so that's really got to be ramped up. It doesn't help that
:12:24. > :12:28.the costs of exploring are increasing rapidly. The oil and gas
:12:29. > :12:32.industries are very important as an employer and as a big payer of tax
:12:33. > :12:38.too. The bill is expected to fall this year from ?6.5 billion to ?5
:12:39. > :12:44.billion. That number may look big to you or the fall from last year,
:12:45. > :12:48.maybe what -- may be what gets your attention because those figures are
:12:49. > :12:51.important for the arguments for or against Scotland becoming
:12:52. > :12:55.independent. Three teenagers have admitted
:12:56. > :12:59.stealing alcohol, cash and charity tins from the Clutha bar in Glasgow
:13:00. > :13:05.weeks satisfied ten people died there in a helicopter crash. Jordan
:13:06. > :13:08.Parry, Darren Melrose and Charmaine Holmes pleaded guilty to breaking
:13:09. > :13:12.into the pub in December. They were caught after being seen by a man who
:13:13. > :13:17.was paying his respects to a friend who died there three weeks before.
:13:18. > :13:22.At the court, sentence of the teenagers was deferred and they were

:13:27. > :13:29.dinners. A review out today suggests many of them want to be more
:13:30. > :13:32.involved in decisions about what to put on the menu or how to run the
:13:33. > :13:36.service. The Government's due to publish new
:13:37. > :13:37.guidance shortly. Our education correspondent has been to a school
:13:38. > :13:51.that took part in the study. At this primary School in Glasgow
:13:52. > :13:58.lunchtime is a chance for youngsters to socialise together and learn
:13:59. > :14:05.about healthy eating. It is really healthy. I like being healthy
:14:06. > :14:13.because I just feel better. What could make having your lunch at
:14:14. > :14:19.school even better? Not to have not sought anything in case you are
:14:20. > :14:26.allergic. This school has even got the children to act as secret
:14:27. > :14:31.shoppers. It is all about their experience with food. They wanted
:14:32. > :14:35.more adults, more interaction with adults and a good expedience just
:14:36. > :14:41.like you or I would want when going out for lunch. Concerns included
:14:42. > :14:48.insufficient or unappealing choices and the time spent in queues. Other
:14:49. > :14:54.ideas included making more use of local and seasonal produce. This
:14:55. > :15:01.comes as the government prepares to publish more guidance on its school
:15:02. > :15:05.dinners. We have school meals that are regulated because of nutritional
:15:06. > :15:10.quality but it is not just about the quality of food, it is how we think
:15:11. > :15:14.about schools, primary and secondary is very different so what do we need
:15:15. > :15:22.to do to work with those children to make eating and the school meal
:15:23. > :15:31.experience so much more fun? The review will also include the views
:15:32. > :15:36.of educational experts. Now we look at some other stories happening
:15:37. > :15:41.across Scotland this Tuesday. The danger of metal theft has been
:15:42. > :15:46.discussed by emergency services and businesses across Scotland today. If
:15:47. > :15:52.the year it causes millions of pounds worth of damage as well as
:15:53. > :15:57.affecting public safety. The summit was to raise more awareness of the
:15:58. > :16:01.time. The introduction of average speed cameras on the A9 will damage
:16:02. > :16:07.the economy according to business leaders. The delivery will be
:16:08. > :16:15.delayed until the autumn due to technical problems. Some
:16:16. > :16:21.organisations say the cameras will harm competitiveness by increasing
:16:22. > :16:25.journey times. A man who barricaded himself inside the house in Dumfries
:16:26. > :16:33.has been taken into custody following a stand-off that lasted
:16:34. > :16:37.for 14 hours. Negotiators coaxed the man out of the house and he
:16:38. > :16:44.eventually gave himself up this morning. Plans to buy this village
:16:45. > :16:57.and Lewis have gone to postal ballot, 250 people voted for the
:16:58. > :17:03.buyout while 86 voted against. We will be looking at trying to get
:17:04. > :17:09.development projects in place to benefit the local community. That is
:17:10. > :17:14.what this is all about. It was called the ferry Toon and its main
:17:15. > :17:19.industry was granite quarrying. These two claims to fame have been
:17:20. > :17:27.incorporated into a new public artwork today at the entrance to key
:17:28. > :17:34.town. The bell on top the calls home people once summoned the boat to
:17:35. > :17:41.cross Wigtown Bay. Now, as the Queen's Batten heads to the
:17:42. > :17:45.Falklands head of the Commonwealth this summer, police office are
:17:46. > :17:53.preparing for its return home in June. Police Scotland is setting up
:17:54. > :17:56.a special Baton security force, to accompany the Baton as it spends 40
:17:57. > :17:59.days travelling around the country. Our Commonwealth Games reporter Lisa
:18:00. > :18:02.Summers has been to the police training college in Tulliallen to
:18:03. > :18:06.find out more. The police Batten team get a flavour of what will
:18:07. > :18:10.happen this summer in Scotland. It has been good getting out, obviously
:18:11. > :18:18.there will be a lot of meeting of people and meeting other as well. If
:18:19. > :18:22.there is an attack on the Batten what I want you to be thinking about
:18:23. > :18:30.is to you feel alert and thinking about the potential issues that may
:18:31. > :18:40.be created when you get out there. The initial test was to whittle down
:18:41. > :18:46.100 applicants to 80 recruits -- 40 recruits. Our role is to make sure
:18:47. > :18:51.it gets safely around the country saw that as many members of the
:18:52. > :18:57.public can enjoy the expedience. The officers will run the equivalent of
:18:58. > :19:04.half marathon per day but the biggest challenge will be running at
:19:05. > :19:12.this pace. They will be looking to make the most of their 200 metres in
:19:13. > :19:17.the limelight. It is quite unnatural for myself as a runner to go at a
:19:18. > :19:22.slower speed. I think the more we practised the more we will get used
:19:23. > :19:32.to it. Trying to keep the pace quite slow will come into a problem when
:19:33. > :19:36.you have to react to something. These officers will have to prepare
:19:37. > :19:42.for all eventualities, running in all weathers. Leasing the Batten
:19:43. > :19:48.will be the first test of becoming a single force. Now let's get the
:19:49. > :19:53.latest sport. Very slow running sounds like the ideal job for me!
:19:54. > :19:56.Ricky Burns' challenger is tonight apologising to the World Champion's
:19:57. > :19:59.fans, that's because he says he's here to take away Burns WBO
:20:00. > :20:02.lightweight title. Terence Crawford met the media for the first time
:20:03. > :20:06.today ahead of this weekend's fight in Glasgow. And the man from
:20:07. > :20:17.Nebraska and his entourage left quite an impression. Here's Phil
:20:18. > :20:23.Goodlad. Meet Terence Crawford, American, undefeated and very
:20:24. > :20:29.confident. I came here because Ricky has got something that I want. I'm
:20:30. > :20:36.going to take it. Here's not the only one who believes in his
:20:37. > :20:43.ability. I am 100% confident in what Terence is about to do. He is about
:20:44. > :20:52.to create the world champion out of Nebraska. Such confidence comes from
:20:53. > :20:59.Crawford's record, years undefeated and has not got 16 of his 22
:21:00. > :21:06.opponents. I have the desire, the determination, the veil, I have got
:21:07. > :21:11.whatever it takes. If that was not enough it seems like the Crawford
:21:12. > :21:18.camp does not really rate Ricky Burns. He has never fought anybody.
:21:19. > :21:29.I am going to keep saying the same thing about Ricky Burns, he is like
:21:30. > :21:33.a third-place golden Globe winner. I wonder what Ricky Burns mix of all
:21:34. > :21:36.this? Fight night cannot come fast enough. Inverness Caledonian Thistle
:21:37. > :21:39.manager John Hughes says they will be looking for "revenge" over local
:21:40. > :21:42.rivals Ross County in the Highland derby tonight. County currently hold

:21:47. > :21:50.Tonight's game is a replay of a match in the autumn that had to be

:22:00. > :22:09.highland derbies have become known as elk ethical in reference to the
:22:10. > :22:13.Keswick bridge behind me here. These Inverness Caley Thistle and Ross
:22:14. > :22:21.County fines -- ties have added the lot of spice to football heeding the
