:00:33. > :00:34.Also on the programme: the clever invention to make waitressing

:00:35. > :00:37.easier, but could changes in the patent rules be about to discourage

:00:38. > :00:40.more Scottish inventors? And rugby training Barbados style -

:00:41. > :00:43.we catch up with the Queen's Baton on the latest leg of its journey of

:00:44. > :00:47.the Commonwealth. And find out why these Aberdeen

:00:48. > :00:58.players are watching the golf at St Andrews.

:00:59. > :01:06.Good evening. There are fresh claims tonight about

:01:07. > :01:11.the Lockerbie bombing, that if true, cast further doubt on the Scottish

:01:12. > :01:14.criminal investigation. So far, Abdelbaset Al-Megrahi is the only

:01:15. > :01:18.person to be convicted of the atrocity in which 270 people died.

:01:19. > :01:22.The Libyan Secret Service agent was jailed for life in 2001, and died

:01:23. > :01:25.two years ago, protesting his innocence. But this evening in a

:01:26. > :01:28.documentary by the Al Jazeera TV channel, it's claimed this man,

:01:29. > :01:31.Ahmed Jibril, a Palestinian, is the mastermind behind the plot, working

:01:32. > :01:33.on behalf of the Iranians. Campaigners say it's further proof

:01:34. > :01:36.Megrahi's conviction was a miscarriage of justice. The Crown

:01:37. > :01:38.Office says the claims are not new and is continuing its investigations

:01:39. > :01:53.in Libya. Did this lead to the Lockerbie

:01:54. > :02:02.bombing? An American naval bombing shoots down an Iranian Airbus

:02:03. > :02:06.carrying pilgrims. This ship claimed it believed it was being targeted by

:02:07. > :02:12.a guided missile but Iran's leaders cite as an attack against them and

:02:13. > :02:15.vowed hit back. This is crucial. They thought that

:02:16. > :02:18.if they did not retaliate against the latest they'd been continued to

:02:19. > :02:26.shoot down the civilian airlines. If you do not understand that, do not

:02:27. > :02:29.understand Lockerbie. This man has long been suspected of involvement

:02:30. > :02:44.and Al Jazeera now says it has proved. The Iranians asked them to

:02:45. > :02:47.bring down several aeroplanes. If this was true it would mean the

:02:48. > :02:54.conviction of Al-Megrahi was a miscarriage of justice That is a

:02:55. > :02:56.view long held by many British campaigners.

:02:57. > :02:59.We know the official version is not right. When the verdict is

:03:00. > :03:03.overturned we shall be asking for the truth, because if they do not

:03:04. > :03:10.tell us, under European law, we will take them to the European Court.

:03:11. > :03:13.After 25 years, the Lockerbie investigation continues. Prosecutors

:03:14. > :03:17.have visited Libya in a bid to track down other people involved in the

:03:18. > :03:20.plot. It must be disappointing for the

:03:21. > :03:25.families to listen to these theories, which are being presented

:03:26. > :03:31.as something new. But these are theories that have been played out

:03:32. > :03:37.many times before. Despite claims made in the

:03:38. > :03:45.programme, the Iranians Government has denied any role in the Lockerbie

:03:46. > :03:48.bombing. Advanced, free training is being

:03:49. > :03:52.offered to young drivers in the Borders to try to reduce the high

:03:53. > :03:55.number being killed and injured on the region's roads. Although there's

:03:56. > :03:58.been a slight improvement, in 2012, nationwide 174 people died in

:03:59. > :04:02.traffic accidents. Of that number, 31 were aged 16-24. Police say young

:04:03. > :04:03.people account for up to a quarter of those killed and injured on our

:04:04. > :04:17.roads. I will give you guidance, but it is

:04:18. > :04:22.down to yourself, with practice in between sessions...

:04:23. > :04:26.The district say that this driver is eight times more likely to crash and

:04:27. > :04:30.his parents. He has a one in four chance during his first two years on

:04:31. > :04:33.the road. He has already seen happen to others but does not think it will

:04:34. > :04:39.happen to him. One of my friends crashed burqa a

:04:40. > :04:43.few weeks ago so I have seen the consequences. I tried to drive as

:04:44. > :04:49.deeply as I can. There is much more to it than the

:04:50. > :04:55.driving test teaches. You can see this bridge on the right...

:04:56. > :05:05.MLE is training with the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

:05:06. > :05:11.It struck me that with the possibility of improving the driving

:05:12. > :05:17.of these drivers we could also improve the likelihood of

:05:18. > :05:22.fatalities. They will spend several thousand

:05:23. > :05:30.pounds to extend training to younger drivers. Advanced drivers are less

:05:31. > :05:35.likely to be involved in a crash. There is no information in this

:05:36. > :05:40.country but a similar scheme in Austria managed to cut the number of

:05:41. > :05:46.people crashes among young people by nearly 50% over ten years. This girl

:05:47. > :05:51.says that advanced training has made her a better driver and recommends

:05:52. > :05:56.it. They may think they are the best driver but the will certainly be put

:05:57. > :06:04.in the place when the drivers. Their confidence will improve.

:06:05. > :06:07.You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on

:06:08. > :06:10.tonight's programme: hundreds of workers at the Faslane and Coulport

:06:11. > :06:13.naval bases stage a walk-out over pay.

:06:14. > :06:17.In sport, news of the departure of a National head coach.

:06:18. > :06:20.And they may be at the home of golf, but Dons boss Derek McInnes is

:06:21. > :06:22.focused on another beautiful game, and victory in Sunday's League Cup

:06:23. > :06:31.Final. Some of the women who've been

:06:32. > :06:34.damaged by a commonly used surgical implant to treat incontinence have

:06:35. > :06:36.been speaking about their experience, ahead of impending legal

:06:37. > :06:39.action. Hundreds of cases are expected to go before Scottish

:06:40. > :06:42.courts in the coming months. Warning: this report deals with

:06:43. > :06:54.issues which may not be suitable for children. One woman in three over

:06:55. > :06:59.the age of 30 seconds from incontinence, often as a result of

:07:00. > :07:05.childbirth. Mesh implants usually support the bladder and have become

:07:06. > :07:10.a common treatment. Some women say these implants have hardened inside

:07:11. > :07:15.them. It has horrific consequences. This woman had her operation several

:07:16. > :07:20.years ago and has had surgery for times to try to remove the implant.

:07:21. > :07:31.Bthe pain never goes away. I have pain all over. In September, they

:07:32. > :07:36.reckoned they had removed all the mesh. But I do not think it is a

:07:37. > :07:41.way. This woman wants to speak to me

:07:42. > :07:45.anonymously. She was left in agony, but the hard mesh inside her has had

:07:46. > :07:51.other consequences. Before I got the implants, me and my

:07:52. > :07:55.husband could have sex, but no sex is not possible because I have the

:07:56. > :08:01.implants. We do not have a sex life. It has taken its toll on my

:08:02. > :08:04.marriage. Both women are among hundreds of

:08:05. > :08:12.cases due to come before Scottish courts. There are massive class

:08:13. > :08:21.actions in America cause of the impact of these medical devices on

:08:22. > :08:24.women. It also affects some men. The organisation which regulates

:08:25. > :08:31.implants is that the benefits of mesh implants outweigh the risks.

:08:32. > :08:35.New information leaflets are being compiled by the Scottish Government.

:08:36. > :08:41.But this woman feels alone and frightened. We were left in the

:08:42. > :08:45.dark. There was something happening inside my body, what will it be like

:08:46. > :08:58.in another five years? It would get any better.

:08:59. > :09:01.A consultant has told a fatal accident inquiry that two students

:09:02. > :09:05.would not have been killed if the man driving the car that hit them

:09:06. > :09:08.told the truth on a DVLA form. Mhairi Convy and Laura Stewart died

:09:09. > :09:12.after being hit by William Payne's Range Rover in Glasgow in 2010. He

:09:13. > :09:16.said on his form that he had no history of blackouts in the past

:09:17. > :09:19.five years. Dr Neil Grubb - who produced a report based on his

:09:20. > :09:21.medical records - said that was wrong.

:09:22. > :09:25.Hundreds of workers have staged a walk out from the naval bases on the

:09:26. > :09:28.Clyde which house the UK's nuclear deterrent. Unite members are in a

:09:29. > :09:32.pay dispute with the management of Babcock Clyde. The union says it's

:09:33. > :09:41.the first time in over forty years they've taken industrial action at

:09:42. > :09:47.the Faslane and Coulport bases. The familiar sound of the bagpipes,

:09:48. > :09:50.leading the walk-out from Faslane naval base. But industrial action is

:09:51. > :09:55.not something these workers are told familiar. The union says it is the

:09:56. > :09:59.first time many of these people have been on strike. Usually, they

:10:00. > :10:08.maintain ships and nuclear submarines but today they went

:10:09. > :10:14.outside into the sunshine. Instead of being a simple one year

:10:15. > :10:19.deal, it is now a two-year deal for 2013 and 2014. It has strings

:10:20. > :10:35.attached. It is complicated. Our members rejected it by mentioning

:10:36. > :10:38.percent. -- were rejected by 19%. There was some worrying on the

:10:39. > :10:43.walk-out today also. They would not give an interview but in a statement

:10:44. > :10:50.read that the latest offer was an improvement. It was compatible to

:10:51. > :10:54.other sites. The union says that this morning's walk-out is just the

:10:55. > :10:58.beginning. They plan a series of one hour stoppages. They hope to

:10:59. > :11:05.persuade the management to increase their offer.

:11:06. > :11:08.?6.5 million of new money is being given for training people to work in

:11:09. > :11:10.information technology. The Scottish government's new digital

:11:11. > :11:13.technologies Skills Investment Plan will train teachers and careers

:11:14. > :11:16.guidance officers, as well as funding industry led programmes for

:11:17. > :11:24.graduates. It's thought as many as 11,000 jobs could be created in the

:11:25. > :11:27.sector each year. Scottish environmental watchdogs are

:11:28. > :11:31.to be given new powers to regulate the nuclear sites run by the

:11:32. > :11:33.Ministry of Defence in Scotland. The Environment Secretary, Richard

:11:34. > :11:36.Lochhead, has announced plans to change the law because the MoD did

:11:37. > :11:49.not publicly disclose details of a radiation problem at HMS Vulcan two

:11:50. > :11:55.years ago. Next to Dounreay, HMS Vulcan tests the nuclear reactors

:11:56. > :11:57.used on legal submarines. A test reactor developed a problem two

:11:58. > :12:02.years ago and it is concern here that the community was not told.

:12:03. > :12:09.It is disappointing that we work closely with HMS Vulcan and I have

:12:10. > :12:12.looked back at meeting minutes and there is no record of any report of

:12:13. > :12:19.the leak or any concerns about the site.

:12:20. > :12:23.What nuclear news was given locally? In January 2012, the MoD said there

:12:24. > :12:28.was little to report. In April, he said that it was business as usual.

:12:29. > :12:34.By September, trials were said to be continuing on schedule. At no point

:12:35. > :12:39.was the leak of radiation mentioned. Low levels of radioactivity were

:12:40. > :12:41.detected in the cooling water... The Defence Secretary disclosed

:12:42. > :12:46.these details last week, but only because he had decided to refuel HMS

:12:47. > :12:52.Vanguard as a precaution at the cost of hundred and ?20 million. Here,

:12:53. > :12:56.ministers are furious they were not told about the radiation problem two

:12:57. > :12:59.years ago. Even though, it is classed as a low-level event without

:13:00. > :13:05.safety risks. The UK Government owes people of

:13:06. > :13:08.Scotland and apology and there should be far greater openness in

:13:09. > :13:14.the future about nuclear activity in Scotland. This event is classed as

:13:15. > :13:19.the role on the international atomic agency's measurement scale, so why

:13:20. > :13:24.are the Scottish Government scaremongering?

:13:25. > :13:30.The MoD said that there is a national security interest in

:13:31. > :13:38.withholding information about nuclear ships.

:13:39. > :13:41.A look at other stories from the across the country.

:13:42. > :13:44.The Labour-run administration on Aberdeen City Council is to press

:13:45. > :13:47.ahead with sending out controversial letters endorsing a No vote in

:13:48. > :13:50.September's independence referendum. Around 200,000 letters will be

:13:51. > :13:53.included in bills sent out to council tax payers. The SNP has

:13:54. > :13:56.called for them to be pulped. The Scottish Government's being

:13:57. > :13:59.criticised for failing to include dedicated cycle lanes on each side

:14:00. > :14:02.of the A9 as part of dualling the route between Inverness and Perth.

:14:03. > :14:05.The Scottish Greens say Transport Scotland is likely to rule it out

:14:06. > :14:11.due to environmental impacts and costs.

:14:12. > :14:13.A new study involving Strathclyde and Dundee Universities suggests

:14:14. > :14:16.obesity in adolescent girls is associated with lower academic

:14:17. > :14:19.results during their teenage years. Researchers found those classed as

:14:20. > :14:26.obese at the age of eleven achieved lower results than those of a

:14:27. > :14:28.healthy weight. The Lanarkshire based engineering

:14:29. > :14:32.contractor Motherwell Bridge has been bought in a ?37.6 million deal.

:14:33. > :14:35.The company, which employs 300 people, will retain its headquarters

:14:36. > :14:37.in Motherwell. It's been acquired by Cape plc, which provides support to

:14:38. > :14:46.the energy and mineral resources sectors.

:14:47. > :14:49.BBC Scotland has been told only one traffic warden is now operating

:14:50. > :14:52.across the whole of the Borders. Police Scotland intended to withdraw

:14:53. > :14:56.the service at the end of last month. They agreed to leave it in

:14:57. > :14:58.place at the last minute, after Stirling, Falkirk and Scottish

:14:59. > :15:02.Borders Councils threatened to take the plans to a judicial review. But

:15:03. > :15:13.two of the Borders three wardens have already left the service.

:15:14. > :15:17.We're a country famous for our pioneering inventions but under

:15:18. > :15:23.sweeping changes proposed to patent rules, Scottish inventors and

:15:24. > :15:26.designers could lose out. MPs are considering changes to the law to

:15:27. > :15:30.make it easier to protect new inventions across Europe. But under

:15:31. > :15:44.the plans, Scottish courts would no longer be able to hear those cases.

:15:45. > :15:51.Ordering a copy can present a challenge, balancing that hot drink

:15:52. > :15:56.on a tray takes skill. But look again. This tray is more than it

:15:57. > :16:04.seems. There is hidden help on offer. It is the brainchild of

:16:05. > :16:13.Allison, a Scottish inventor. She has a patented for her tray so it

:16:14. > :16:19.can't be copied by a rival. Even with a heavy object on the edge of

:16:20. > :16:25.it, it's like a magic trick. Is it safe from those who would like to

:16:26. > :16:32.steal her idea? In theory! They would be broken the law if they

:16:33. > :16:37.copied it, but it's not to say people try and copy patents all the

:16:38. > :16:43.time. To prevent that, a new set of rules will soon apply all across

:16:44. > :16:48.Europe. But for companies here, there's just one problem. Right

:16:49. > :16:55.now, inventors can protect their product to legal action here in

:16:56. > :17:01.Edinburgh. But the law is about to change and so is the court. In

:17:02. > :17:08.future, inventors may have to take legal redress in London or even

:17:09. > :17:20.Europe. All of these businesses potentially will be damaged by

:17:21. > :17:26.having to go abroad. That will cost them a lot more money. The

:17:27. > :17:34.government says in future, firms in all part of the UK, will be able to

:17:35. > :17:44.protect inventions more easily. Sport now. Here's Rhona.

:17:45. > :17:51.It's been the scene of some of Scottish sport's most historic

:17:52. > :17:54.occasions. Today, the Old Course at St Andrews again took centre stage

:17:55. > :17:59.but for slightly different reasons than usual. Our senior football

:18:00. > :18:14.reporter, Alasdair Lamont, will reveal all.

:18:15. > :18:23.I know what you are thinking. Beautiful day, barely a breath of

:18:24. > :18:36.wind and we are at the home of golf. It's the Aberdeen League Cup final

:18:37. > :18:42.media day. To have an opportunity to come away for a couple of days and

:18:43. > :18:47.enjoy the hotel and the weather will be good preparation for us. The

:18:48. > :18:56.semifinal win took them to the first final in 40 years. That could be a

:18:57. > :19:03.platform for greater success. Winning should be like that every

:19:04. > :19:13.week. I don't think it would do us any harm. Once we have experienced

:19:14. > :19:16.that, we want that again. He needs to turn that winning mentality into

:19:17. > :19:18.a trophy winning mentality. Meanwhile, the Inverness Caledonian

:19:19. > :19:22.Thistle manager is no longer angry about having to play a league game

:19:23. > :19:26.in the run-up to the final. John Hughes's team play Hibs tomorrow. He

:19:27. > :19:29.HAD thought that was unfair so close to the League Cup final but after

:19:30. > :19:40.Cally Thistle's 5-0 Scottish Cup defeat at the weekend, it seems he's

:19:41. > :19:47.had a change of heart. It has worked for us because we need that game. I

:19:48. > :20:00.am hoping that we can go and pick a team that can get back to winning

:20:01. > :20:10.ways. We will try and win. Now a look at what else is happening

:20:11. > :20:20.across Scottish sport: Scottish athletics is looking for its fourth

:20:21. > :20:26.national head coach. Scotland rugby head coach Scott

:20:27. > :20:36.Johnson is sticking with his stick -- with his skipper. We have

:20:37. > :20:43.definitely moved forward and improved hugely. There have been a

:20:44. > :20:51.number of young players who have come to the side and have had a run

:20:52. > :20:56.of games and have gained experience. After a heavy loss this morning to

:20:57. > :21:03.Finland, the curlers at the Paralympics enjoyed a win over

:21:04. > :21:09.Norway. Three-time Paralympic champion has

:21:10. > :21:15.received the bike she hopes to write to glory at the Commonwealth Games.

:21:16. > :21:21.She says after the London Olympics, she can't wait for another home

:21:22. > :21:32.games. I have had that dry run now. I think it will be amazing in

:21:33. > :21:39.Glasgow. Andy Murray was caused problems. But

:21:40. > :21:41.the Scot kept is called to win the match. Next up, he faces the

:21:42. > :22:01.Canadian. I am feeling envy ends -- envious of

:22:02. > :22:04.Beaumont today. The Queen's Baton Relay has been

:22:05. > :22:07.continuing its journey around every Commonwealth nation and territory

:22:08. > :22:10.ahead of the Games in Glasgow this July. The BBC's Mark Beaumont has

:22:11. > :22:14.been with the baton all the way. This week, he's in Barbados with the

:22:15. > :22:30.rugby sevens team, who will play Scotland in the opening matches.

:22:31. > :22:41.It's the first stop in the Caribbean island. Asians of all ages came out

:22:42. > :22:45.to celebrate the Queen 's Batten. A couple of months ago, this team were

:22:46. > :22:49.not going to the games, but they have been called up last minute

:22:50. > :22:55.because Nigeria have dropped out. So now, they have got a real race to

:22:56. > :22:59.get ready in time. These players have come a long way since Barbados

:23:00. > :23:09.was placed last at the Caribbean Championships. Not a chance! And

:23:10. > :23:20.that's under the midday Caribbean sun! This is how you do your

:23:21. > :23:27.training of the pitch? We get the resistance we need. Barbados will be

:23:28. > :23:33.up against the reigning Commonwealth champions, New Zealand, and their

:23:34. > :23:47.first game will be in a stadium of 50,000 fans against Scotland. It

:23:48. > :23:54.will be amazing. The team include students, , a teacher and a delivery

:23:55. > :23:58.driver who are now preparing for the biggest competition of their lives.

:23:59. > :24:03.The coach is confident his players have what it takes. This is an

:24:04. > :24:13.intelligent group of guys. They have adapted very quickly and built up

:24:14. > :24:19.very good camaraderie. They have done a nice job of it. These players

:24:20. > :24:25.might be amateurs but they are doing all they can to train like

:24:26. > :24:30.professionals. Whether or not they can win against the odds, in a game

:24:31. > :24:32.of rugby sevens, where speed counts, these Caribbean sprinters

:24:33. > :24:49.will certainly be hard to catch. More sunshine coming our way. A

:24:50. > :24:56.beautiful day across most of the country today. Our warmest of the

:24:57. > :25:05.year so far. Last night, though, Aboyne was the coldest place in the

:25:06. > :25:09.country. That happens every time. Tonight is no different. Under clear

:25:10. > :25:18.skies, temperatures readily falling away. It is tried but frosty. Bigger

:25:19. > :25:25.cloud into Shetland. Elsewhere, towns and cities down to freezing.

:25:26. > :25:29.Tomorrow, cold and frosty start. Those mist and fog patches quickly

:25:30. > :25:40.lifting and plenty of sunshine once again. Strathclyde, and for the

:25:41. > :25:46.issue, plenty of sunshine. Under the cloud, a little bit cooler. That

:25:47. > :25:52.cloud big enough for some light rain or drizzle, but further inland,

:25:53. > :25:59.plenty of sunshine. Probably more in the way of sunshine compared with

:26:00. > :26:03.today. Winds across the north-west fresh at times, but elsewhere,

:26:04. > :26:08.reasonably light. This time tomorrow night, cloudy skies and light rain

:26:09. > :26:15.or drizzle in the north-west. As we had to the week, high-pressure

:26:16. > :26:19.starting to slip away from us. Some light and patchy outbreaks of rain

:26:20. > :26:24.in the Northwest. Elsewhere, cloudier but still OK temperature

:26:25. > :26:29.wise. Towards the end of the week, that low pressure continues to drift

:26:30. > :26:36.away towards the south. That means wet and windy conditions. The

:26:37. > :26:41.further south and east you are, the drier and brighter it will be. But

:26:42. > :26:45.once again, temperatures into double digits. Tonight, cold and frosty and

:26:46. > :26:48.it is clear skies. Now, a reminder of tonight's main

:26:49. > :26:51.news: A documentary claims to have uncovered fresh evidence that Iran,

:26:52. > :26:54.not Libya, ordered the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie in

:26:55. > :26:57.December 1988. The Al Jazeera programme suggests a Palestinian

:26:58. > :27:00.terrorist group retaliated to an American warship shooting down an

:27:01. > :27:03.Iranian civilian airliner. The Crown Office says the claims are not new.

:27:04. > :27:06.Abdelbaset al-Megrahi is the only person to be convicted of the
