:00:08. > :00:11.Good afternoon. In a no-holds-barred attack on the

:00:12. > :00:13.SNP's defence plans, UK Defence Secretary Phillip Hammond is warning

:00:14. > :00:18.an independent Scotland could not maintain the country's current level

:00:19. > :00:20.of protection. Speaking at the Conservative Party Conference in

:00:21. > :00:23.Edinburgh he described SNP defence plans as deluded and said that an

:00:24. > :00:27.independent Scotland could not support a warship building industry.

:00:28. > :00:33.Our Political Correspondent Glenn Campbell reports.

:00:34. > :00:36.The Defence Secretary said that the scale of the UK's Armed Forces

:00:37. > :00:41.benefits Scotland in terms of defence. The scale of UK defence

:00:42. > :00:45.spending benefits Scotland's economy. More than 12,000 people

:00:46. > :00:51.work in defence industries in Scotland. Some of those jobs in the

:00:52. > :00:55.Clyde and Rosyth are supported directly by Royal Navy contracts. At

:00:56. > :00:59.no point did the Defence Secretary say that those contracts would dry

:01:00. > :01:03.up or be withdrawn in the event of independence, although he did say

:01:04. > :01:08.that he thinks the SNP are deluded or seeking to delude when they

:01:09. > :01:12.suggest that a warship building industry can be maintained after

:01:13. > :01:15.independence. That have been suggestions from the unions at

:01:16. > :01:21.Rosyth this week that Royal Navy orders from the rest of the UK would

:01:22. > :01:25.not come after independence. The SNP say there is no reason why those

:01:26. > :01:29.contracts could not be won by Scottish firms, and of course there

:01:30. > :01:33.will be others from an independent Scottish navy, also. The Defence

:01:34. > :01:36.Secretary does not believe the promises and is confident that the

:01:37. > :01:41.best route for the defence industries in Scotland was for

:01:42. > :01:46.Scotland to remained part of the UK.

:01:47. > :01:49.A man in his late 20s has died following a disturbance in a house

:01:50. > :01:52.in the North East of Glasgow. The incident happened at about 1:45am in

:01:53. > :01:55.Conisborough Road. Police are treating the man's death as

:01:56. > :01:56.suspicious. It's understood they're following a definite line of

:01:57. > :02:00.inquiry. A man in his 20s has died after

:02:01. > :02:04.being hit by three vehicles on the M73 near Gartcosh. The man was hit

:02:05. > :02:07.while he was walking on the carriageway at about 5:15 this

:02:08. > :02:10.morning when he was struck by an Audi A3, a Vauxhall Vectra and a

:02:11. > :02:13.Volkswagen Scirocco. In Rugby, Scotland kick off their

:02:14. > :02:17.final Six Nations match against Wales at 2:45pm. Edinburgh's Douggie

:02:18. > :02:21.Fife will make his debut in the match, which is live on the BBC. The

:02:22. > :02:24.Scots have only won six times in Cardiff since the Second World War.

:02:25. > :02:27.It's interim coach Scott Johnson's last game in charge.

:02:28. > :02:31.Football, and there was one match played in the Premiership last

:02:32. > :02:35.night. Celtic beat Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, 3-0. All three goals

:02:36. > :02:38.were scored in the second half by Kris Commons. Celtic are now just

:02:39. > :02:42.seven points away from clinching a third consecutive league title

:02:43. > :02:45.championship. Now, let's have a look at the

:02:46. > :02:51.weekend weather. Here's Judith Ralston.

:02:52. > :02:57.Good afternoon. The emphasis for this afternoon will be on a lot of

:02:58. > :03:02.dry weather. We are close to this area of high pressure but it is not

:03:03. > :03:08.close enough to keep these areas of low pressure away and we will see

:03:09. > :03:13.some results. The cloud thick enough to bring rain in western areas and

:03:14. > :03:17.into the north, but there will be dry areas in between. The best of

:03:18. > :03:21.the driest conditions are in the East. We might even see some

:03:22. > :03:25.brightness elsewhere through the thick cloud and rubbing my old

:03:26. > :03:37.everywhere, highs of 30 Celsius, quite breezy. -- 13 Celsius. It was

:03:38. > :03:44.a breezy and on the mild side for tomorrow's. More drizzle towards the

:03:45. > :03:49.West Coast, drier conditions inland and the best of the conditions in

:03:50. > :03:53.the East. High-temperature is of 15 Celsius for Aberdeenshire.

:03:54. > :03:56.And that's Reporting Scotland. Our next update's later than usual, at

:03:57. > :04:00.7:10 this evening. Until then, from everyone on the team here in the

:04:01. > :04:01.Glasgow, enjoy the rest of your Saturday

:04:02. > :04:14.Following on from what has been largely dry and settled week with

:04:15. > :04:18.high pressure in charge, the weekend weather continues on that theme,

:04:19. > :04:22.too. Things are looking largely dry, not everywhere, but there will

:04:23. > :04:25.be some warm sunshine on offer, particularly through the afternoons.

:04:26. > :04:26.It will be feeling fairly
