:00:00. > :00:07.Tonight, on Reporting Scotland: One of the best known and most

:00:08. > :00:13.charismatic figures in Scottish politics, Margo MacDonald, has died

:00:14. > :00:16.at the age of 70. In a career spanning more than forty years, she

:00:17. > :00:24.played a prominent role in the independence movement. Tonight, the

:00:25. > :00:29.First Minister paid tribute to her. Margot tended to tell it as it was.

:00:30. > :00:34.It was one of the reason she was so loved by the people. She was known

:00:35. > :00:41.universally by her first name. Very few politicians achieve that

:00:42. > :00:44.accolade. I am the MP for Govan. She came to the fore in the seventies,

:00:45. > :00:47.winning the Glasgow Govan by-election for the SNP. More

:00:48. > :00:53.recently she battled Parkinson's disease and campaigned for assisted

:00:54. > :00:59.suicide. I am sorry to hear she died. She is the blonde bombshell

:01:00. > :01:03.down here, I suppose. You will never see another Margo. She will be sadly

:01:04. > :01:07.missed. We'll be assessing her influence on the nationalist cause

:01:08. > :01:09.and how she'll be best remembered. Also on the programme: The

:01:10. > :01:12.resignation of Cardinal Keith O'Brien - now the Vatican says it's

:01:13. > :01:15.to investigate the claims of sexual misconduct levelled against him.

:01:16. > :01:18.Police release CCTV images of a missing medical student in St

:01:19. > :01:22.Andrews, as his parents appeal for help to try to find him.

:01:23. > :01:25.And on the eve of the Grand National, we speak to last year's

:01:26. > :01:39.winning jockey about his chances of doing it again.

:01:40. > :01:46.The popular Independent MSP Margo MacDonald died today at her home in

:01:47. > :01:49.Edinburgh at the age of 70. For more than 40 years, she was hugely

:01:50. > :01:53.influential within the Scottish independence movement and at one

:01:54. > :01:56.point was deputy leader of the SNP. More recently, she had been

:01:57. > :01:59.suffering from Parkinson's disease. She campaigned to legalise assisted

:02:00. > :02:07.suicide for people with terminal illness. Our political editor, Brian

:02:08. > :02:13.Taylor, looks back on her life. Deeply serious, a political partisan

:02:14. > :02:21.who chafed within party constraints but above all charismatic, hugely

:02:22. > :02:28.popular. They had won the constituency of Govan in 19 73 in a

:02:29. > :02:34.by-election. I am the MP for Govan. So get that straight, first of all.

:02:35. > :02:39.Govan and Scotland got it but she was to spend just 112 days in that

:02:40. > :02:45.role as an MP, ousted at the general election. Feisty and energetic, she

:02:46. > :02:50.was the SNP deputy leader during the 1970s but political divorce followed

:02:51. > :02:53.and she quit the party in the internal conflict which followed

:02:54. > :03:00.defeat in 1979 but she was more than a politician. She qualified as a PE

:03:01. > :03:05.teacher first of all. Joining us from Edinburgh is Margo MacDonald.

:03:06. > :03:11.Here with a youthful Jeremy Paxman, she built a career as a respected

:03:12. > :03:14.broadcaster. She rejoined the SNP alongside her second husband, Jim

:03:15. > :03:22.Sillars who had also won a by-election in Govan. Welcome back,

:03:23. > :03:26.coat. The rebirth of the Scottish Parliament brought her back to front

:03:27. > :03:31.line politics. Scotland seemed happy to see her. Populist and pragmatic,

:03:32. > :03:37.she fought hard on issues like health care. She was a persistent

:03:38. > :03:41.critic of the Hollywood building. She forced the Fraser inquiry into

:03:42. > :03:49.the building. She was up for droll humour when tackling controversial

:03:50. > :04:01.issues that Chas prostitution. -- it is -- issues such as prostitution.

:04:02. > :04:08.It would do no harm for some folk. She was less than amused it to be

:04:09. > :04:13.ranked low in the SNP election list for 2003. I think they are snakes. I

:04:14. > :04:19.think they did it for selfish reasons. Margo fought and try that

:04:20. > :04:24.the party of one, perhaps the only party that could hold her. Her

:04:25. > :04:27.politics and some of the left, but in the world. Calmac if artificially

:04:28. > :04:31.confine our interests or a responsibility to our small corner,

:04:32. > :04:37.we will think small thoughts and do small things.

:04:38. > :04:41.More likely a new and controversial cause, backing assisted suicide for

:04:42. > :04:48.the terminally ill facing intolerable strain and of course it

:04:49. > :04:52.was partly personal. She coped with a degenerative disease. I don't want

:04:53. > :04:57.to burden any doctor. I don't want to burden any friend or family

:04:58. > :05:01.member. I want to find a way in which I can take the decision to end

:05:02. > :05:05.my life in case I am unlucky enough to have the worst form of

:05:06. > :05:07.Parkinson's disease near the end of life. Intelligent, driven, witty,

:05:08. > :05:16.passionate. Just Margo. Tributes have been paid to Margo

:05:17. > :05:20.Macdonald from across the political spectrum and by members of the

:05:21. > :05:24.public. They were led by her husband Jim Sillars, who said she had left a

:05:25. > :05:26.void that would be impossible to fill. "The brightest light in the

:05:27. > :05:30.Scottish political firmament," he said, "has gone out." Our political

:05:31. > :05:37.correspondent, Glenn Campbell, reports.

:05:38. > :05:41.Over more than 40 years, she has become an iconic figure in Scottish

:05:42. > :05:44.politics. In Govan tonight, where she made her big political

:05:45. > :05:51.breakthrough, she is remembered with affection. I am sorry to hear that

:05:52. > :05:59.she died because she is a blonde bombshell down here. She was very

:06:00. > :06:02.chic and elegant, which added to the whole picture. Glamorous and

:06:03. > :06:07.good-humoured and generous, Margo MacDonald was held in high regard

:06:08. > :06:12.across the political divide. Scotland has lost a very special and

:06:13. > :06:16.quite unique women, Margo MacDonald was an institution in Scottish

:06:17. > :06:21.politics, she was the mother of the Scottish Parliament. She was

:06:22. > :06:23.somebody who believed passionately in Scottish independence, was very

:06:24. > :06:29.political but somebody had managed to transcend party politics. She was

:06:30. > :06:36.able to reach out to people beyond politics, she spoke with such warmth

:06:37. > :06:41.and passion, such great humour. She just managed to do something that

:06:42. > :06:46.was speaking out to everybody that politics was about people and their

:06:47. > :06:54.lives. The Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson described her

:06:55. > :07:02.as a complete 1-off... The Liberal Democrats Scottish secretary

:07:03. > :07:07.Alistair Carmichael said... It is a sad day. Margo MacDonald was one of

:07:08. > :07:10.the great figures of Scottish Parliament. I don't know anyone who

:07:11. > :07:14.served in the Scottish Parliament with who not have the highest

:07:15. > :07:20.respect for her commitment for serving her constituency and the

:07:21. > :07:24.cause is she believed in. The Lothians MSP was still staring wit

:07:25. > :07:29.and wisdom with the Holyrood chamber towards the end of last year. In

:07:30. > :07:34.November she launched a new right to die bill which will be taken forward

:07:35. > :07:38.by the Green Party's Patrick Harvie. Whether you were on the same side of

:07:39. > :07:43.any issue or on the opposite side, you could never fail to acknowledge

:07:44. > :07:48.the quality that she brought to the debating chamber and two Scottish

:07:49. > :07:53.public life in general. She was a sparkling, fun, exciting person but

:07:54. > :07:58.she was also formidable and challenging. Margo MacDonald died in

:07:59. > :08:11.home -- at her home in Edinburgh this afternoon with her family by

:08:12. > :08:16.her side. Her husband said... Margo tended to tell it as it was. She was

:08:17. > :08:20.loved by the people. She was known universally by her first name, very

:08:21. > :08:25.few politicians get that accolade of being able to campaign on their

:08:26. > :08:29.first name. She was elected as an independent three times and that is

:08:30. > :08:32.tough. Few politicians can achieve that. The flag that Holyrood are

:08:33. > :08:39.lowered tonight in tribute, any book of condolences memories will be

:08:40. > :08:43.left. She lit up Scottish Parliament.

:08:44. > :08:52.Our political editor, Brian Taylor, is here. She involved herself in

:08:53. > :08:57.such a wide range of issues. What will she be most remembered for? She

:08:58. > :09:02.was a great campaigner on these issues and especially on the cause

:09:03. > :09:06.of independence. It was always independence with a purpose, the

:09:07. > :09:09.purpose being to benefit the dispossessed. She was making choices

:09:10. > :09:12.within Scotland rather than just choosing Scotland, she was highly

:09:13. > :09:18.intellectual yet very human and funny. If you went into her office,

:09:19. > :09:22.you were likely to be engaged in a hugely intellectual debate about

:09:23. > :09:28.independence or speaking about Hibernian or her latest purchase on

:09:29. > :09:31.the shopping channel. There aren't many politicians you can honestly

:09:32. > :09:36.say inspire affection among the public. What was it about Margo that

:09:37. > :09:40.drew people to her? She was witty, she was humane and she was

:09:41. > :09:45.demonstrably on the side of the people. That point that Alex Salmond

:09:46. > :09:49.made about her standing as an independent, she stood in 2003 as an

:09:50. > :09:57.independent, she was a party of one. No resources. Just her own integrity

:09:58. > :10:03.and a few supporters. She won by a country mile. Her place in the

:10:04. > :10:06.Scottish Parliament will not be replaced until the Hollywood general

:10:07. > :10:12.election of 2016, Margo MacDonald literally is irrepressible. --

:10:13. > :10:18.irreplaceable. Thank you, Brian. Margo Macdonald, who has died today.

:10:19. > :10:21.The Vatican is to investigate the claims of sexual misconduct that led

:10:22. > :10:24.to the resignation of Cardinal Keith O'Brien. He resigned as Archbishop

:10:25. > :10:27.of St Andrews and Edinburgh last February, following allegations of

:10:28. > :10:34.improper conduct in the 1980s. Our home affairs correspondent, Reevel

:10:35. > :10:37.Alderson, reports. The last pictures of Cardinal Keith

:10:38. > :10:41.O'Brien before his dramatic resignation in February last year.

:10:42. > :10:44.Following allegations of sexual misconduct with trainee priests, he

:10:45. > :10:50.admitted his behaviour had fallen short of what was expected of him.

:10:51. > :10:55.Now the Pope is sending this Maltese bishop to Edinburgh to take

:10:56. > :11:00.evidence. Bishop Charles Scicluna is known as an aggressive investigator

:11:01. > :11:02.of sexual abuse by clergy. The new Archbishop of St Andrews and

:11:03. > :11:23.Edinburgh has welcomed this step, he said...

:11:24. > :11:31.The order by the Vatican four ship Charles Scicluna to visit Scotland

:11:32. > :11:33.is unprecedented, a cardinal has never before been investigated but

:11:34. > :11:37.the journalist who originally broke the story said victims of the match

:11:38. > :11:43.interests have not been considered. They have been given less than one

:11:44. > :11:47.week notice. I don't think any serious investigation is handled in

:11:48. > :11:50.that way. They have asked the priest to go through the vicar general of

:11:51. > :11:53.the diocese, so they are asking them to tell their line manager first

:11:54. > :11:57.that they want an appointment with Charles Scicluna. When you have

:11:58. > :12:02.confidential information to give, I don't think that is the way to get

:12:03. > :12:08.to the truth. Cardinal O'Brien is currently in Scotland on retreat.

:12:09. > :12:12.Pope Francis will consider his future after receiving Charles

:12:13. > :12:15.Scicluna's report. You're watching Reporting Scotland

:12:16. > :12:18.from the BBC. Still to come on tonight's programme: Two shinty

:12:19. > :12:21.clubs that lost many players during World War One get ready to

:12:22. > :12:25.commemorate their sacrifice. In sport: the Scots jockey who won

:12:26. > :12:28.last year's Grand National is back in the saddle for tomorrow's race -

:12:29. > :12:32.how does he rate his chances? And twenty years on from their last

:12:33. > :12:43.big trophy win, Raith Rovers face Rangers in the Ramsdens Cup final.

:12:44. > :12:46.The parents of a young medical student who's been missing for more

:12:47. > :12:50.than two weeks have appealed for help to find him. Manvir Singh from

:12:51. > :12:55.Bishopbriggs was last seen getting off a bus in St Andrews. Aileen

:12:56. > :13:00.Clarke reports. Manvir Singh, 21 years old and in

:13:01. > :13:04.his third year of studying medicine at Glasgow University. He had not

:13:05. > :13:10.been seen by friends or family since the 19th of March. He lives with his

:13:11. > :13:18.parents in Bishopbriggs. Today their anguish was clear. He is a much

:13:19. > :13:22.loved son. We have not heard from him or seen him for more than two

:13:23. > :13:28.weeks. We are very worried about him. We want you to know that you

:13:29. > :13:32.are not in any trouble. We miss you very much and want you back as soon

:13:33. > :13:39.as possible. Please, please call to let us know if you are OK. Manvir

:13:40. > :13:43.Singh left a friend on Wednesday the 19th here in Glasgow city centre.

:13:44. > :13:47.This was around quarter to five. After leaving his friend on

:13:48. > :13:53.Sauchiehall Street, Manvir Singh came here to Buchanan Street bus

:13:54. > :13:57.station where he got on the 17th 25 Stagecoach bus to St Andrews. CCTV

:13:58. > :14:01.picked him up in St Andrews that night. Police are concerned that

:14:02. > :14:07.though he may have had ?200 with him, he left his phone and bank

:14:08. > :14:09.cards at home. He is never far from his mobile phone and we have his

:14:10. > :14:15.mobile phone which was left on charge. We have his wallet and his

:14:16. > :14:20.passport and his glasses. After he went missing, his parents learned he

:14:21. > :14:25.had failed some recent exams. He has friends in St Andrews and people are

:14:26. > :14:30.urging -- police are urging people who seen him there to get in touch.

:14:31. > :14:33.The oil and gas industry could create up to 39,000 jobs across the

:14:34. > :14:36.UK over the next two years, according to research. The study

:14:37. > :14:40.from the Bank of Scotland suggests that because most of the oil and gas

:14:41. > :14:44.firms are clustered in Aberdeen and the North East, Scotland would gain

:14:45. > :14:47.the largest share of the new work. However, more than a third of the

:14:48. > :14:52.companies taking part raised concerns about a skills shortage.

:14:53. > :14:54.A forensic scientist has told the Elaine Doyle murder trial that the

:14:55. > :14:57.crime scene was particularly difficult to manage. 68-year-old

:14:58. > :15:01.Keith Eynon examined the scene where Elaine's body was found in a lane in

:15:02. > :15:04.Greenock. He also said that DNA evidence did not exist in crime

:15:05. > :15:08.investigations in 1986 when the 16-year-old was killed. 49-year-old

:15:09. > :15:14.John Docherty denies murdering Elaine. He has lodged a list of 41

:15:15. > :15:20.names and says one of those people could have been Elaine's killer. The

:15:21. > :15:23.trial continues. This If you Developers behind plans to replace

:15:24. > :15:26.the former council headquarters at St Nicholas House in Aberdeen say

:15:27. > :15:28.they have listened to the public, as they unveil their latest vision for

:15:29. > :15:32.the site. Are a if Muse Developments are

:15:33. > :15:34.lodging plans for the office, hotel and retail project, known as

:15:35. > :15:40.Marischal Square, and have unveiled new images showing how it will look.

:15:41. > :15:44.You are in An exhibition is being held at the city's art gallery to

:15:45. > :15:49.give the public another chance to comment on the scheme. A A look at

:15:50. > :15:53.other stories from the across the country.

:15:54. > :15:55.Some free-standing walls at Edinburgh schools are being

:15:56. > :15:59.demolished as a safety precaution following the death of a pupil at

:16:00. > :16:02.Liberton High on Tuesday. 12-year-old Keane Wallis-Bennet died

:16:03. > :16:06.when a gym changing room wall collapsed. Safety inspections of all

:16:07. > :16:11.similar walls have been carried out and no imminent risks identified.

:16:12. > :16:14.The Scottish Environment Protection Agency is investigating why a large

:16:15. > :16:21.expanse of foam appeared on the River Clyde in Glasgow. Samples are

:16:22. > :16:23.being taken for testing. It is thought the foam came from an

:16:24. > :16:26.overflow. High streets in Scotland have the

:16:27. > :16:30.highest rate of vacant shops in the UK, according to a study by

:16:31. > :16:35.Deloitte. The firm looked at data on nearly 6,000 shops across the UK.

:16:36. > :16:39.Aberdeen's new aquatics centre is ready to host its first competition.

:16:40. > :16:41.?22 million has been spent on the new Olympic-standard swimming pool

:16:42. > :16:43.and diving arena. 7,000 visitors are expected tomorrow at the eight-day

:16:44. > :16:57.Commonwealth Water Polo Championships. The centre will open

:16:58. > :17:06.to the public in May. Part of thinking was that we not only wanted

:17:07. > :17:11.the facility here in a grand scale, we wanted to produce something which

:17:12. > :17:15.would attract local, regional, national and international

:17:16. > :17:18.competitors. Soldiers from the Royal Scots

:17:19. > :17:21.Dragoon Guards marched through Edinburgh to celebrate their return

:17:22. > :17:25.from Afghanistan. The homecoming parade went down the Royal Mile

:17:26. > :17:26.finishing up at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

:17:27. > :17:30.The horrendous losses suffered by two shinty teams in the First World

:17:31. > :17:34.War will be commemorated tomorrow. Kingussie are playing Kyles Athletic

:17:35. > :17:40.in the league, exactly 100 years and a day since the two sides met in the

:17:41. > :17:50.Camanachd Cup final in 1914. Nine of those who played that day were among

:17:51. > :18:00.the fallen of the Great War. Camanachd Cup the winning Kingussie

:18:01. > :18:11.squad, taking a few weeks before the start of the First World War. At the

:18:12. > :18:21.time, the expected to be home by Christmas. But 19 of them became

:18:22. > :18:25.victims to trench warfare. They were told to virtually charge the German

:18:26. > :18:31.lines. The German submachine guns and snipers waiting for the minute

:18:32. > :18:38.was a total massacre. The shanty players from various parts of

:18:39. > :18:44.Scotland, it was horrendous to even think about it. A large part of a

:18:45. > :18:50.whole generation gone. Many communities were never the same

:18:51. > :19:02.again. We are talking about nine out of the 24 players. The tone lost 60

:19:03. > :19:09.in the great War. We can't contemplate losing that amount of

:19:10. > :19:18.people. For the players who wear friends on the pitch, became part of

:19:19. > :19:22.another common cause at the start of the world war. They were swapping

:19:23. > :19:25.the tranquil surroundings of the quiet A1 tone for the industrial

:19:26. > :19:33.scale slaughter of the Western front.

:19:34. > :19:43.Let us get all the sport. He became an overnight sensation last year.

:19:44. > :19:47.Ryan Mania will attempt to win the Grand National for the second year

:19:48. > :19:50.in a row tomorrow when he rides Mr Moonshine in the 4.15 at Aintree.

:19:51. > :19:53.The jockey from Galashiels is playing down his chances of repeat

:19:54. > :19:59.success, but as Heather Dewar reports, hopes are high for the

:20:00. > :20:07.24-year-old. Warming up for the big race tomorrow. At Aintree today, a

:20:08. > :20:12.painful reminder of how tough this course can be. His fall was a

:20:13. > :20:23.disappointing start to the day. It was a far cry from the success last

:20:24. > :20:29.year on the 61 6061 outsider. It turned my life outside them. It was

:20:30. > :20:33.just great to be a part of it. Tomorrow, he will ride Mr and Shane

:20:34. > :20:43.after his Grand National winner was retired. Same jockey, trainer and

:20:44. > :20:49.owner going for it again would have been nice. Because he is not racing,

:20:50. > :20:57.maybe the pressure is off slightly. So, is Mr men shame when we should

:20:58. > :21:02.be putting our money on? It is Pollock over the fences. I hope I

:21:03. > :21:09.can just get round. That is all you can hope for really. If you stay out

:21:10. > :21:14.of trouble, you never know in that race, that is the beauty of it.

:21:15. > :21:17.20 years ago, Raith Rovers shocked Celtic to win the League Cup final.

:21:18. > :21:21.Rovers' class of 2014 are hoping to make their names by lifting the

:21:22. > :21:30.Ramsdens Cup this weekend. They will have to beat Rangers to do it. The

:21:31. > :21:37.cup may not be as illustrious as the league cup, but the heroes of 1994

:21:38. > :21:43.were joining the current squad. Easter Road as the venue for the

:21:44. > :21:51.final and it has already been the scene of cup delight for Rovers this

:21:52. > :21:56.season. There are constant remainders at the club here. There

:21:57. > :22:00.are pictures on the wall. It is not mentioned so much, the pressure of
