:00:00. > :00:09.The best employment figures in a generation.

:00:10. > :00:12.The number of people here in work is at its highest level

:00:13. > :00:17.The last remaining Commonwealth Games tickets were due

:00:18. > :00:20.to be sold on Monday but, after crashes and delays,

:00:21. > :00:25.organisers admit it could be days before sales are up and running.

:00:26. > :00:28.Quiet on the outside, mayhem on the inside.

:00:29. > :00:30.Over 40 inmates are involved in an overnight disturbance

:00:31. > :00:39.As St Mirren's new leadership blends youth with experience,

:00:40. > :00:54.the new man in the middle outlines his credentials.

:00:55. > :01:09.There are a host of personalities. This includes them all.

:01:10. > :01:12.The number of Scots in work has reached its highest

:01:13. > :01:18.In the period between January and March, there were just over 2.5

:01:19. > :01:24.And, over the same period, the number of people out

:01:25. > :01:38.Here's our economics correspondent, Colletta Smith.

:01:39. > :01:48.When I grow up, I would like to be an athlete in the Olympics doing

:01:49. > :01:55.gymnastics. I would like to be a physio in football. I would like to

:01:56. > :01:58.be an interior designer. For those at the other end of the school

:01:59. > :02:07.system, people sitting their Highers, the prospects of finding a

:02:08. > :02:11.job are very real. Today's statistics show companies are taking

:02:12. > :02:17.on new staff. That has been welcomed. It is great news and a

:02:18. > :02:22.sign that the economy is moving into recovery mode. We are seeing really

:02:23. > :02:29.strong recruitment activity across a number of sectors, ranging from oil

:02:30. > :02:32.and gas through to renewables. Also the ICT and digital technology

:02:33. > :02:43.sector. Really strong recruitment activity. They used to say that you

:02:44. > :02:47.should be a lawyer or a doctor. Those days are gone. Software is

:02:48. > :02:51.taking over everything across all sectors. This is something that

:02:52. > :02:58.Scotland really has incredible talent at producing. We just need

:02:59. > :03:02.more people. Today 's statistics show the Scottish and implement rate

:03:03. > :03:07.is at 6.4%, lower than the 6.8% which is the average for the UK as a

:03:08. > :03:12.whole. The number of people who were claiming the dole last month fell by

:03:13. > :03:16.2000 compared with March. Today's figures are not only good news for

:03:17. > :03:20.those who had jobs but they also reflect well on the Scotland economy

:03:21. > :03:23.as a whole and that makes it much more likely the work dreams of these

:03:24. > :03:27.children can be turned into reality in years to come.

:03:28. > :03:29.The ticket provider for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games now say

:03:30. > :03:33.it may take some days to resolve the problems with their website.

:03:34. > :03:35.Yesterday, Glasgow 2014, in conjunction with Ticketmaster,

:03:36. > :03:37.took the decision to shut it down after thousands

:03:38. > :03:40.of people were unable to buy tickets because of technical problems.

:03:41. > :03:43.Our Commonwealth Games reporter, Jane Lewis, joins me now.

:03:44. > :04:00.This area behind me will be a hive of activity during the Games this

:04:01. > :04:04.summer. It will host the gymnastics and also play host to the finals of

:04:05. > :04:08.the boxing and the netball. Anyone who has been keen to try to get

:04:09. > :04:12.their hands on any of the extra tickets made available for these

:04:13. > :04:17.sports and for others well, they have not been able to do so today.

:04:18. > :04:23.That is 24 hours on from Ticketmaster shutting down its

:04:24. > :04:28.website. It has been contacted by Glasgow 2014 to provide tickets for

:04:29. > :04:31.these Games. They did release a statement earlier today when they

:04:32. > :04:35.talked about regretting any frustration that was caused to any

:04:36. > :04:38.customers over the past two days. As I say, that statement was released

:04:39. > :04:45.earlier this morning. A short time ago, Glasgow 2014 has released a

:04:46. > :04:51.statement. They say improvements will be made to the website if

:04:52. > :04:56.needed. They also at this. They say, once this review is complete and any

:04:57. > :04:59.measures have been implemented and tested, we will be in a position in

:05:00. > :05:04.the coming days to advise when ticket sales will be back up and

:05:05. > :05:09.running. Of course, some people did manage to get their hands on tickets

:05:10. > :05:14.before the website shut down yesterday, 24 hours ago now. Around

:05:15. > :05:18.60,000 of those available tickets have been sold. There were many,

:05:19. > :05:23.many other people who were left frustrated. It has to be said those

:05:24. > :05:27.frustrations have been felt by many. Many people have been offering words

:05:28. > :05:30.of sympathy, none other than the first minister Alex Salmond. He said

:05:31. > :05:34.today that while he was sympathetic, it shows that everyone

:05:35. > :05:36.wants to get in on the Glasgow 2014 act. He says, such was the demand

:05:37. > :05:40.for these tickets. The company that operates

:05:41. > :05:43.Grangemouth has announced that it has been granted planning permission

:05:44. > :05:46.for the largest ethane tank Ineos say it will help secure the

:05:47. > :05:49.future of the petrochemical plant What is the significance

:05:50. > :06:04.of this announcement? Last Christmas I went to Norway to

:06:05. > :06:08.see what the future of Grangemouth could look like. They have built an

:06:09. > :06:13.enormous tanks they could be the first in Europe to import cheap

:06:14. > :06:17.shell gas from the United States to process into plastics. These are the

:06:18. > :06:23.plastics that are used to going to milk bottles. It is more than 100

:06:24. > :06:28.feet tall. The One Show Grangemouth will be twice that size. -- the one

:06:29. > :06:32.at Grangemouth. Even after shipping, the shell gas will cost half the

:06:33. > :06:39.price of the North Sea gas they currently use costs. You can see

:06:40. > :06:44.there will be a big saving. The petrochemical side of the plant was

:06:45. > :06:48.nearly shut down. After a dispute between management and the union,

:06:49. > :06:53.workers signed up to a survival plan and the huge tank is part of that

:06:54. > :06:58.plan, to secure the jobs. The company says it could secure the

:06:59. > :07:06.site for the next 15 years. Not everyone is welcoming it? Concern

:07:07. > :07:12.has been expressed. The company has said it is essential to keep the

:07:13. > :07:16.business going at Grangemouth and it need not always been from America.

:07:17. > :07:21.Therein lies another controversial debate about the ethics of fracking

:07:22. > :07:24.for shale gas. For now, this means that Grangemouth has gone from

:07:25. > :07:27.almost closing down last year to having a future.

:07:28. > :07:29.You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC.

:07:30. > :07:30.Still to come on tonight's programme...

:07:31. > :07:34.How work on a rural bypass in the south west turned up a treasure

:07:35. > :07:46.In the sport, the new man in charge of St Mirren says he has no problem

:07:47. > :07:53.taking over from his former boss. More on that and, if Eurovision was

:07:54. > :07:59.not to your taste, how about this? Yes, I am afraid the Cup Final songs

:08:00. > :08:05.from Dundee United and St Johnstone have been recorded.

:08:06. > :08:13.No ifs, no buts, the words of the Chancellor, George Osborne today, as

:08:14. > :08:16.he insisted no deal will ever be reached which will allow Scotland to

:08:17. > :08:20.use the pound in the event of independence. He was giving evidence

:08:21. > :08:24.to the Commons Scottish affairs committee. The first minister said

:08:25. > :08:29.his position was a campaign gambit which had failed to sway voters

:08:30. > :08:35.against independence. Our Westminster correspondent reports. A

:08:36. > :08:39.new campaign unveiled amid reports of concerns over strategy and

:08:40. > :08:41.denials from Downing Street as too negative. It comes three months

:08:42. > :08:46.after the Chancellor ruled out the Scottish Government plans to share

:08:47. > :08:50.the pound after Scottish independence. Today he restated the

:08:51. > :08:55.position, rejecting claims by the Scottish affairs committee that the

:08:56. > :09:00.move may have alienated Scots voters. There will not be a currency

:09:01. > :09:05.union. That is not just my position, it is the position of the Labour

:09:06. > :09:08.Party and the Liberal Democrats. Any combination you can possibly imagine

:09:09. > :09:15.of a British Government for the foreseeable future has ruled this

:09:16. > :09:18.option out. The senior Treasury official who advised against this

:09:19. > :09:23.was sitting alongside. Both mental the committee will be huge practical

:09:24. > :09:32.financial consequences if Scotland wanted to use the pound without

:09:33. > :09:35.agreement. We have had a procession of economists calling these

:09:36. > :09:39.arguments ridiculous. We have had senior government ministers quoted

:09:40. > :09:44.as saying, of course there will be a currency union. This is just a

:09:45. > :09:52.gambit for the campaign. I think the reaction among the Scottish people

:09:53. > :09:58.for these edicts among -- from on high says that began bit of George

:09:59. > :10:03.Osborne has failed. It is about the pound in your pocket. Mr Osborne use

:10:04. > :10:07.the formal surroundings of the Commons committee to say he was not

:10:08. > :10:16.laughing. Voters have for months to decide who they think is telling the

:10:17. > :10:24.truth. -- laughing. An investigation is under way after prisoners were

:10:25. > :10:31.involved in a disturbance. They had control of a unit at Grampian

:10:32. > :10:37.prison. Damage to the unit has been described as considerable. From the

:10:38. > :10:40.outside, just a few clues to what has been going on in the new

:10:41. > :10:45.Grampian prison. Although there is no obvious sign of a disturbance to

:10:46. > :10:50.those passing this new jail, activity levels have been higher

:10:51. > :10:54.than normal. This is the prison on the inside, just a few weeks ago,

:10:55. > :11:00.when the first inmates arrived. Around 9pm yesterday, some prisoners

:11:01. > :11:04.began vandalising some of the 60s and fittings, staff were treated and

:11:05. > :11:08.locked them behind one of these sets of bars. They remained there for

:11:09. > :11:14.more than 13 hours until this latest in a series of incidents was brought

:11:15. > :11:19.under control. I do not think it is right to categorise it as a problem.

:11:20. > :11:22.You do get some incidents and teething problems in any new

:11:23. > :11:27.establishment. Historically that has been the case. What we have seen

:11:28. > :11:32.here today is blatant disregard for those people behaving in a manner

:11:33. > :11:35.that is totally unacceptable. 41 prisoners, who are in the

:11:36. > :11:39.accommodation block, are in the process of being moved to other

:11:40. > :11:43.jails. The Scottish Prison Service says the amount of damage caused was

:11:44. > :11:48.considerable. Police will examine what happened with a view to

:11:49. > :11:51.prosecuting. The Prison Service said inmates did not voluntarily end

:11:52. > :11:55.their disturbance this morning. Instead, a specially trained team of

:11:56. > :12:09.staff entered the accommodation block, wearing body armour and

:12:10. > :12:13.helmets, and retook control. That said, the Prison Service points out

:12:14. > :12:16.that no staff or inmates were injured.

:12:17. > :12:19.A look at other stories from the across the country:

:12:20. > :12:21.Inverness Prison has problems with overcrowding, according to the Chief

:12:22. > :12:26.Following an inspection in February, his report says it was holding 26

:12:27. > :12:29.more prisoners than its 103 capacity, and that the

:12:30. > :12:35.A fisherman has died after falling from a boat off

:12:36. > :12:40.He was one of two people aboard a Loch Ewe-based creel boat

:12:41. > :12:44.He was recovered from the water by his colleague and airlifted to the

:12:45. > :12:51.A developer has cleared the first hurdle to turn one

:12:52. > :12:54.of Perth's most historic civic buildings into a luxury hotel.

:12:55. > :12:58.The City Hall, built a century ago, has lain empty for nearly ten years.

:12:59. > :13:00.Arguments have raged over its future,

:13:01. > :13:05.Now a council committee is recommending planning consent is

:13:06. > :13:14.granted to develop the building as a five-star hotel.

:13:15. > :13:22.We have to decide the process will be. As far as I'm aware, we will

:13:23. > :13:28.have to apply to remove that application to demolish this. Beyond

:13:29. > :13:31.that, council may have to decide whether they will not be building

:13:32. > :13:34.back. Councillors in Aberdeen have been

:13:35. > :13:37.discussing a bylaw to deal with The Labour-led administration says

:13:38. > :13:41.something needs to be done to protect public places

:13:42. > :13:42.from being used. The SNP has branded

:13:43. > :13:46.the move discriminatory. This year's Edinburgh Jazz

:13:47. > :13:50.Blues Festival is promising 140 gigs Venues across the capital will

:13:51. > :13:54.host musicians from around the The organisers say it's

:13:55. > :14:09.the most ambitious programme yet. Immigration often features

:14:10. > :14:12.in the debate over the future of the European Union,

:14:13. > :14:14.because as the EU has expanded and new countries have joined,

:14:15. > :14:17.more people have had the right to With the European Parliament

:14:18. > :14:22.elections just over a week away, our political correspondent,

:14:23. > :14:23.Glenn Campbell, has been asking if free movement has

:14:24. > :14:35.been good for Scotland or not. Whether they come bypass or by boat,

:14:36. > :14:43.plane or train, every EU citizen has the right to travel to this or any

:14:44. > :14:47.other EU country to live and work. SNP say Scotland needs to attract

:14:48. > :14:52.more talent to thrive. Scotland is not full. We know one of our

:14:53. > :14:56.challenges is to grow our working age population so we can support and

:14:57. > :15:04.sustain the services needed for our ageing population. The UKIP message

:15:05. > :15:08.could not be more different. They want out of the EU, and tablet --

:15:09. > :15:13.tougher immigration controls than any of the four largest Scottish

:15:14. > :15:16.parties. Witham it is clear people in Scotland they got the whole they

:15:17. > :15:20.should be slightly less immigration then there is now. They also want to

:15:21. > :15:24.make sure they have public services that are well staffed and have

:15:25. > :15:29.qualified doctors and nurses. A recent poll for the migration

:15:30. > :15:33.observatory at Oxford University suggested that Scotland is indeed

:15:34. > :15:38.more positive about immigration then England and Wales. But a clear

:15:39. > :15:43.majority of those asked still said that immigration should be reduced.

:15:44. > :15:51.It is something on the doorstep. People feel they are worried about

:15:52. > :15:56.their workplaces and opportunities. That can sometimes be translated

:15:57. > :15:59.into a fear of others. We believe it is scapegoating other people. Only

:16:00. > :16:06.7% of Scottish residents were born outside the UK, and less than half

:16:07. > :16:11.of them, 158,000, are from other European Union countries. What is

:16:12. > :16:16.clear is that Scotland's people like having the benefit of being in

:16:17. > :16:21.Scotland and we are very tolerant about people coming here as well.

:16:22. > :16:27.The Scottish Greens have also put welcoming Europeans at the centre of

:16:28. > :16:31.their campaign. The six new MPs will send representatives to Brussels and

:16:32. > :16:36.Strasbourg will be elected next Thursday.

:16:37. > :16:39.Let's turn our attention to sport and get the round-up from David.

:16:40. > :16:42.St Mirren's new manager Tommy Craig says he had no hesitation

:16:43. > :16:46.Craig was Lennon's assistant until Monday, when Lennon was told

:16:47. > :16:51.The new boss says he wants the team to continue playing

:16:52. > :17:02.Meet the three bodies. The new boss but to be more consistent.

:17:03. > :17:14.Meet the three bodies. The new boss and player encourages. They all seem

:17:15. > :17:19.surprised to get the gig. I'm grateful to Danny, who brought me to

:17:20. > :17:23.the club in the first place, and now I find myself in the number one

:17:24. > :17:28.position. It is sad to see Danny Reeve, and then gaining the

:17:29. > :17:37.opportunity, but we both have a good relationship. The whole thing has

:17:38. > :17:42.been crazy, to be honest for stop it was something offered to us, and

:17:43. > :17:53.opportunity we could not turn down. Do you have any thoughts? We are

:17:54. > :18:00.obviously standing here as part of a management team, so it is great.

:18:01. > :18:06.While St Mirren were helped to win by Denny last year, the league form

:18:07. > :18:10.in the season just ended was patchy. The new regime's major is

:18:11. > :18:15.consistency with style. People will say it is all about results, and I

:18:16. > :18:19.agree with that, but surely along the way we could give the public

:18:20. > :18:22.something they will enjoy watching. We owe them that. We were to get

:18:23. > :18:28.cracking on talking to a number of players, and then recruiting players

:18:29. > :18:36.into the club. Anyone signed up since taking over? That is none of

:18:37. > :18:38.your business. That is made back in my place.

:18:39. > :18:40.Three days and counting to the Scottish Cup final.

:18:41. > :18:43.And if you thought Eurovision was bad, what about this?

:18:44. > :18:52.St Johnston going for a mellow approach to

:18:53. > :18:58.Not so Dundee United players, complete with backing singers!

:18:59. > :19:11.That is how we found ourselves so high up the league by putting

:19:12. > :19:14.experienced players there on the day. We need to make sure it comes

:19:15. > :19:21.together and that we work together and that we click. We have a chance

:19:22. > :19:27.of winning the first Scottish cup, and being in the first final.

:19:28. > :19:30.Andy Murray's breezed into the third round of the Italian Open.

:19:31. > :19:33.The Scot defeated Marcel Granollers of Spain in straight sets in Rome.

:19:34. > :19:37.Murray could face World number one Rafael Nadal in the quarter finals.

:19:38. > :19:40.The Glasgow and Scotland forward Ed Kalman has announced his retirement

:19:41. > :19:47.Kalman made over 100 appearances for Glasgow Warriors.

:19:48. > :19:50.Joy for Rangers and heartache for Hearts in the under 20s

:19:51. > :20:01.Locked together at two goals each after extra time,

:20:02. > :20:04.Badminton Scotland's appealing to Commonwealth Games Scotland to allow

:20:05. > :20:10.Caitlin Pringle and Rebecca Findlay to compete in individual events

:20:11. > :20:13.They've only been selected for the team event.

:20:14. > :20:15.It's the first leg of the championship play-off tonight.

:20:16. > :20:18.Dunfermline versus Cowdenbeath is live on BBC Radio Scotland

:20:19. > :20:23.and online, and also coverage of League One play-offs.

:20:24. > :20:26.Read all about the new regime at St Mirren and much more on the

:20:27. > :20:43.Can't get those songs out of my head. Thank you, David.

:20:44. > :20:45.They're said to be some of the oldest

:20:46. > :20:47.and most important archaeological finds ever unearthed in Scotland.

:20:48. > :20:49.Thousands of artefacts from ancient civilisations dating

:20:50. > :20:53.back around 9,000 years were found during the building of a bypass

:20:54. > :21:08.A modern highway crosses an ancient land. The construction of one

:21:09. > :21:12.uncovering the secrets of the other. I see a dense landscape of

:21:13. > :21:18.archaeology from 9000 years ago. Neolithic over there. You could see

:21:19. > :21:25.the road arcing through a landscape dominated by major ceremonial

:21:26. > :21:31.sites, with a landscape dominated by the past. When plans were approved

:21:32. > :21:37.to divert the A75, archaeologists were applied to investigate this

:21:38. > :21:45.during construction. They unearthed a prehistoric treasure trove. They

:21:46. > :21:51.are series of Neolithic stone and flint items. The newest from the

:21:52. > :21:58.Bronze Age, like this cremation urn. Most remarkably, two magnificent

:21:59. > :22:01.necklace is made of jet. Spectacular places like these with being the

:22:02. > :22:08.possessions of the wealthiest members of society, probably from

:22:09. > :22:12.female graves, and they are important because they would have

:22:13. > :22:16.been imported all the way from Yorkshire. This is particularly

:22:17. > :22:20.important because it's the first group of fines from the south-west

:22:21. > :22:24.of Scotland. The remains are exciting. If you look at some of the

:22:25. > :22:29.stone tools, they don't look spectacular, but in many ways, they

:22:30. > :22:33.are an expression of someone's daily activity. You can most see their

:22:34. > :22:38.hands wrapped around the tools now, so in many ways, it is like reaching

:22:39. > :22:41.back through time and shaking hands with them.

:22:42. > :22:48.Conservation and examination of the artefacts is likely to shed new

:22:49. > :22:51.light on a whole series of Galloway's old civilisations.

:22:52. > :22:58.What can we expect from the weather? Christopher can tell us.

:22:59. > :23:05.Hello. Fairly cloudy at the moment. It will be a cloudy evening and

:23:06. > :23:09.night. Mark to the last night. A week weather front trying to push
