:00:00. > :00:12.And that is all from us. There is more throughout the evening on the

:00:13. > :00:21.police. Critics say there's growing evidence that policies from the old

:00:22. > :00:23.Strathclyde force are being implemented across the country.

:00:24. > :00:30.They're off! Scotland's biggest music festival gets underway. Join

:00:31. > :00:36.me live at T in the Park as they celebrate the last year here at

:00:37. > :00:39.tying macro. -- at Balado. We have a special report from the

:00:40. > :00:42.Borders on the impact of the referendum debate there.

:00:43. > :00:45.As holiday-makers bask in the Loch Lomond sunshine, the public is given

:00:46. > :00:49.more time to suggest how the national park should be developed.

:00:50. > :00:50.And we'll be live at Hampden Park as some of the world's best athletes

:00:51. > :01:11.compete in the Diamond League. Good evening. A huge increase in

:01:12. > :01:13.people being stopped and searched at random, routinely armed police on

:01:14. > :01:19.the streets in the Highlands and attempts to impose new restrictions

:01:20. > :01:22.on festival-goers in the South West. All evidence, according to critics,

:01:23. > :01:25.of a growing level of centralised control since forces across the

:01:26. > :01:29.country merged to form Police Scotland. But police deny they've

:01:30. > :01:39.adopted a one-size-fits-all approach. Craig Anderson reports.

:01:40. > :01:44.It is a site few people in the Highlands expected to see, armed

:01:45. > :01:47.police on everyday patrol, part of a strategy introduced by Police

:01:48. > :01:52.Scotland across the country, and while only a handful have guns,

:01:53. > :01:57.opponents say it is changing the nature of policing. It runs contrary

:01:58. > :02:02.to improvements in society, reductions in violence, white at the

:02:03. > :02:05.point when that is less violent crime than ever before in the

:02:06. > :02:11.Highlands should we have armed police on streets? It does not make

:02:12. > :02:15.sense. Critics claim it is one example of how the amalgamation of

:02:16. > :02:22.eight forces into one last year has led to a one size fits all approach.

:02:23. > :02:27.Please deny that is the case. I make most of the local decisions, but

:02:28. > :02:31.their standards across Scotland that senior managers will make, things

:02:32. > :02:34.are different across Scotland, and using firearms as an example, the

:02:35. > :02:41.amount of officers deployed using firearms here is different than in

:02:42. > :02:45.other parts of Scotland. But concerns have also been raised in

:02:46. > :02:53.Aberdeen and Dumfries and Galloway, we're the number of B. That random

:02:54. > :02:58.went up from 16 to over 3000. -- we're the number of people but were

:02:59. > :03:03.stopped at random. And also improve -- also putting tougher licensing

:03:04. > :03:09.restrictions on the Wicker man festival. It was thought we would

:03:10. > :03:13.get central belt policies, and it would appear those fears have come

:03:14. > :03:19.true. And we are seeing Strathclyde policing policies in rule areas,

:03:20. > :03:23.which we did not want to see. Senior officers said decisions can be

:03:24. > :03:31.reconsidered to take into account regional concerns. But those who

:03:32. > :03:37.campaigned against one Scottish forces say that their concerns are

:03:38. > :03:40.now being justified. Tens of thousands of people are

:03:41. > :03:44.heading to T in the Park, Scotland's biggest music festival. It's the

:03:45. > :03:47.final time the event is being staged at Balado in Kinross-shire. And

:03:48. > :03:55.Catriona Shearer is there for us tonight. It looks like the weather

:03:56. > :04:00.is working out well at least? Absolutely perfect festival weather.

:04:01. > :04:08.We have been soaking up the sun and atmosphere all day here at Balado. T

:04:09. > :04:14.in the Park celebrating its 21st birthday and with no shortage of

:04:15. > :04:20.people wanting to join the party. It was a mad dash for that coveted

:04:21. > :04:25.spot at the front of the main stage. Thousands got here early, the

:04:26. > :04:31.campsite opened yesterday and 55,000 people spent last night here. Some

:04:32. > :04:35.have travelled further than others. We are from the Wirral near

:04:36. > :04:43.Liverpool, coming for a weekend, he heard a lot about it, something to

:04:44. > :04:49.take off the bucket list. The whole thing, music, atmosphere, amazing.

:04:50. > :04:54.It is massive compared to the very first one, and it is something

:04:55. > :05:02.special, the first one was basic, two tense, this is just amazing.

:05:03. > :05:05.With 85,000 people here per day, it is becoming the fifth largest town

:05:06. > :05:11.in Scotland, and people know how to dress. Not just the sun people are

:05:12. > :05:15.warned about. The overriding thing is we want people to be safe and

:05:16. > :05:21.have fun and in terms of that, in terms of alcohol, drink sensibly,

:05:22. > :05:25.look after your friends, remember where your tent is. If one of your

:05:26. > :05:32.friends has too much to drink, do not leave them alone. For 17 years,

:05:33. > :05:39.T in the Park has been on this site, but this is its last year. It will

:05:40. > :05:45.be a motion will -- it will be emotional for the man who organises

:05:46. > :05:52.it. The start of a new chapter, the chance to reinvigorate the event.

:05:53. > :05:58.But it will be sad. End of an era in deed. But for some,

:05:59. > :06:04.it is just the start of things to come. Glasgow band Chvrches played

:06:05. > :06:08.last year, and since then they have been tipped for big things, so they

:06:09. > :06:14.are back again this year on a bigger stage to an even bigger audience and

:06:15. > :06:21.I caught up with them earlier. The Sunniside, nothing to complain

:06:22. > :06:27.about. -- sun is out. We have had good weather. Feeling good. I

:06:28. > :06:38.exciting is it to play T in the Park again? It will be good. And playing

:06:39. > :06:42.a slightly bigger stage. And we have footage from last year, when you

:06:43. > :06:51.made your debut at T in the Park on a smaller state, how did that go? It

:06:52. > :06:56.was great, really good show. We were in the middle of a lot of work, we

:06:57. > :07:00.could not just take it in and enjoy the experience as much as we would

:07:01. > :07:09.have, over the door to someone else, this year is moral stand good. -- it

:07:10. > :07:12.is more relaxed and good. We have done a lot of festival since this

:07:13. > :07:17.time last year. T in the Park was the start of festival season for us,

:07:18. > :07:26.and we have definitely learned the ropes a bit more. Lastly, it is a

:07:27. > :07:35.home crowd, home -- homecoming gig, how do you feel? Just another gig,

:07:36. > :07:42.we are not worried. Kind of special it is the last time at Balado, good

:07:43. > :07:49.to be part of that. Chvrches will be on this page within the hour. Calvin

:07:50. > :07:54.Harris is playing tomorrow. Arctic Monkeys headline on Sunday. For

:07:55. > :07:59.those of you who fancy the look of it, but cannot make it, catch all

:08:00. > :08:04.the action on BBC Radio, television and online. That includes you,

:08:05. > :08:11.Sally. Thank you. And if you're heading to

:08:12. > :08:15.T in the Park, you'll be able to find out how the weather is looking

:08:16. > :08:18.later in the programme. Have a good weekend, Catriona.

:08:19. > :08:21.People are being urged to get over their objections to the tartan

:08:22. > :08:24.uniform chosen for the Commonwealth Games and to back Team Scotland. The

:08:25. > :08:28.call comes from the Scottish Government's Minister for the games,

:08:29. > :08:30.who says that the uniform is bright and colourful. Thousands of people

:08:31. > :08:33.have signed an online petition objecting to the design, which

:08:34. > :08:36.features a fuscia, turquoise and caramel coloured tartan paired with

:08:37. > :08:43.blue shirts. The time is to back the team, it is their parade uniform, it

:08:44. > :08:47.is what it is, bright, colourful, it will stand out on television and it

:08:48. > :08:52.is not something we are expecting people to we're on a night out, it

:08:53. > :08:56.is a parade uniform, what have your attitude, the time is right to get

:08:57. > :09:01.behind the team and give them a huge cheer when they come out in Celtic

:09:02. > :09:04.Park at the opening ceremony. Shona Robison.

:09:05. > :09:07.You're watching Reporting Scotland from the BBC. Still to come on

:09:08. > :09:10.tonight's programme... How would you re-develop Loch Lomond

:09:11. > :09:14.and the Trossachs? The deadline to hear your ideas has been extended

:09:15. > :09:18.until Monday. In sport, join me at Hampden where

:09:19. > :09:23.we will be well and truly up and running at the Diamond League.

:09:24. > :09:28.The cream of the crop of world athletics are here taking part. Join

:09:29. > :09:33.me for that and the latest from the Scottish Open golf in the sport very

:09:34. > :09:39.soon. It's a tradition 900 years in the

:09:40. > :09:43.making. The Common Ridings in the Borders. Hundreds of horses and

:09:44. > :09:46.riders make their way through towns and villages, harking back to a time

:09:47. > :09:49.when they were fighting raiders, the English, or at times both. Our

:09:50. > :09:52.referendum correspondent Laura Bicker went to see what relevance

:09:53. > :09:57.this ceremony has now, as they contemplate which way to vote in the

:09:58. > :10:06.independence referendum. CHEERING.

:10:07. > :10:12.This is the cry to stand firm and sure against readers, thieves who

:10:13. > :10:17.would steal goods and capital. Riders would then ride out to check

:10:18. > :10:24.the town boundaries to ensure they are safe. Two miles outside Jed Boro

:10:25. > :10:33.lies this dazzle. Occupying English forces were removed by the clan

:10:34. > :10:36.Kerr. This shared and turbulent history with the North of England is

:10:37. > :10:43.remembered in song, and through generations. We are close to English

:10:44. > :10:48.neighbours that it is going to be a big decision for us than it may be

:10:49. > :10:53.is for those farther north, where it is very much a Scottish land,

:10:54. > :10:58.really. Polls suggest this area is more likely to vote no in the

:10:59. > :11:08.independence referendum. I will stay the way we are. Why? I cannot see a

:11:09. > :11:14.reason to change, the countries get on and it is an unknown quantity as

:11:15. > :11:18.to what might happen. I think the Borders has been independent all its

:11:19. > :11:24.life, they have never been dependent on Scottish king of the English

:11:25. > :11:29.king. Further east, one firm is making their voting intentions very

:11:30. > :11:33.clear. Dr Colin Son employs over 100 people to transport Scottish

:11:34. > :11:40.seafood across Europe. The sea borders are no barrier to trade. --

:11:41. > :11:46.they have said. Demolition has helped. And rather than Westminster,

:11:47. > :11:54.we can get some dialogue with Edinburgh. -- devolution as help. We

:11:55. > :12:00.do not see it as an issue and look forward to the future. This ceremony

:12:01. > :12:04.is an excuse to come together and celebrate a sense of team unity. For

:12:05. > :12:12.many here, that includes the North of England. Some worry about the

:12:13. > :12:19.future, others wonder about new opportunities. A new future, new

:12:20. > :12:24.borders, and whatever happens, the roots here will continue for

:12:25. > :12:27.generations to come. Loch Lomond and the Trossachs

:12:28. > :12:30.National Park has extended till Monday its deadline to hear what

:12:31. > :12:34.kind of developments you think should be built in the area in the

:12:35. > :12:37.future. Aileen Clarke packed her picnic hamper for one of Scotland's

:12:38. > :12:43.most glorious beauty spots. Pottering about on the water, or

:12:44. > :12:46.popping to the shops, this national park is trying to satisfy these and

:12:47. > :12:53.many demands, from visitors and locals. We are asking people whether

:12:54. > :12:58.they would like to see a village square in Arrochar. Whether people

:12:59. > :13:04.would like to see holiday accommodation in Aberfoyle. And in

:13:05. > :13:13.places like Luss, maybe affordable housing. Consultation has been

:13:14. > :13:18.running for a number of months. We cannot just have a nice national

:13:19. > :13:25.park, but a place where people want to live and work. And kids do not

:13:26. > :13:28.migrate to cities. There is no shortage of ideas, one boat owner

:13:29. > :13:35.says more launch sites could be developed. It would be easier

:13:36. > :13:43.launching a boat, that would help, I find it harder to push out. Visitors

:13:44. > :13:49.and tourists that the local economy depends on, so they are views are

:13:50. > :13:53.also being asked for. Without spoiling the area, they could make

:13:54. > :13:59.more of the resources, better access to the hills. We have been coming

:14:00. > :14:05.for years and years and it has never changed, the scenery hasn't changed.

:14:06. > :14:18.And that is the way you would like it to stay? Yes. I think it has been

:14:19. > :14:28.underdeveloped. It is warm enough for a nice sunny days like this. We

:14:29. > :14:32.would like small hotels. Big hotels in nature is not good. And if you

:14:33. > :14:43.have an opinion, you have until five o'clock on Monday.

:14:44. > :14:47.Isn't it just gorgeous? A look at other stories from the

:14:48. > :14:49.across the country. Two new consultants have been

:14:50. > :14:52.appointed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary's Emergency Department. It

:14:53. > :14:58.follows a warning that patient safety was at risk. Senior medics

:14:59. > :15:01.claimed staff shortages might have meant they'd be unable to

:15:02. > :15:04.resuscitate the most seriously ill or injured patients.

:15:05. > :15:07.Plans for a ?1.2 billion underground and sub-sea electricity cable,

:15:08. > :15:12.connecting two sides of the Moray Firth, have been approved by the

:15:13. > :15:15.industry regulator, Ofgem. The 100 mile line, between Caithness and

:15:16. > :15:22.Moray, could add one point two gigawatts of renewable energy

:15:23. > :15:26.capacity to the grid. A spectacular blaze which sent a

:15:27. > :15:28.giant plume of smoke drifting across Glasgow was started deliberately,

:15:29. > :15:31.according to police. More than 70 firefighters spent the night

:15:32. > :15:36.tackling the blaze in a tyre recycling yard in Renfrew.

:15:37. > :15:42.Hundreds of martial arts enthusiasts from around the world will be in

:15:43. > :15:47.Edinburgh in November. The city is to stage the Commonwealth Taekwondo

:15:48. > :15:50.Championships. The sport is the world's most popular martial art and

:15:51. > :15:55.supporters hope it will become a Commonwealth Games event by 2022.

:15:56. > :16:01.For Scotland, it would mean we could compete as a Scottish team, not just

:16:02. > :16:05.part of the UK team. The only thing we compete visually in is the

:16:06. > :16:09.Commonwealth Championships. But with the Commonwealth Games, there would

:16:10. > :16:13.be an official Scottish team and loads of chances for lots of

:16:14. > :16:16.Scottish athletes. Tickets to see comedian Billy

:16:17. > :16:20.Connolly's High Horse tour in Aberdeen sold out within 50 minutes

:16:21. > :16:24.of going on sale. And the demand for the concert in Edinburgh was so

:16:25. > :16:27.great that the website for the Usher Hall was forced to close. Other

:16:28. > :16:35.venues include Perth, Dundee and Glasgow.

:16:36. > :16:37.Hannah Miley may only be 24. But she's a veteran of Scotland's

:16:38. > :16:42.swimming team for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Our games reporter

:16:43. > :16:47.Jane Lewis has been to meet her. Hannah Miley ready for her next

:16:48. > :16:58.challenge, Glasgow 2014 and first up the defence of her Commonwealth

:16:59. > :17:01.title. Gold to Scotland! It was amazing and to come away with a

:17:02. > :17:05.medal was spectacular. It was interesting, Robert Lynott going

:17:06. > :17:13.according to plan for a lot of people, -- probably not going. It

:17:14. > :17:18.gave as an eye-opener to making sure that you have to make do with what

:17:19. > :17:24.you have and deal with it. You cannot change anything. To come away

:17:25. > :17:31.with the medal was a huge bonus. These will be her third. In 2006, as

:17:32. > :17:38.a 15-year-old, she was a rookie in Melbourne. It is awesome, the

:17:39. > :17:44.progression made, from being the rookie in 2006 to being the senior

:17:45. > :17:47.veteran in 2014, I have come a long way and the journey has been

:17:48. > :17:58.incredible and the experience has been spectacular. An ovation for

:17:59. > :18:05.Hannah Miley. The journey to 2014 has had its ups and downs, the

:18:06. > :18:11.Olympics were disappointing. I've enjoyed the crowd in London, the

:18:12. > :18:15.whole package, I have been able to work out what I need to take from

:18:16. > :18:19.that and hopefully use it to my advantage at the Commonwealth Games.

:18:20. > :18:24.I do not like to state what I want and what will happen, because

:18:25. > :18:32.anything can happen, all I can do is go in and swim the fastest I can. If

:18:33. > :18:36.that can win a medal, great. And we have plenty of live sport.

:18:37. > :18:39.Rhona McLeod is at Hampden Park for the athletics. And Phil Goodlad in

:18:40. > :18:46.Aberdeenshire for the golf. First, let's cross to Rhona at Hampden.

:18:47. > :18:52.Welcome to the Diamond League, and absolutely glorious night here. That

:18:53. > :19:00.has made for perfect conditions. We have had a world record already.

:19:01. > :19:18.Stef Reid, ScottishPower athlete, has a new world record. --

:19:19. > :19:22.para-athlete. This is such a big deal and I am delighted to be joined

:19:23. > :19:30.by Lee McConnell. How much does this mean to the people of Glasgow? You

:19:31. > :19:33.can tell it means a lot based on the atmosphere to see world-class

:19:34. > :19:38.athletes on home soil. A fantastic opportunity. And here is what a

:19:39. > :19:43.couple of the athletes taking place tonight have to say about this

:19:44. > :19:47.event. To have a world-class event on your

:19:48. > :19:52.doorstep is nice, not to have to get on a plane and travel all be as

:19:53. > :19:58.nice, and for it to be a dry run for the Commonwealth is an added bonus.

:19:59. > :20:02.It will be a nice warm up for the Commonwealth games, I hope it will

:20:03. > :20:05.be a full stadium and we can experience it. I think the

:20:06. > :20:10.Commonwealth Games will be that step above that.

:20:11. > :20:16.The Commonwealth games begin in 12 days. You have two Commonwealth

:20:17. > :20:19.Games bronze medals. What will it be like for all the Scots competing

:20:20. > :20:25.here at Hampden at Glasgow 2014? To the ones competing here, it will be

:20:26. > :20:30.the pinnacle of their career. The opportunity to compete in front of a

:20:31. > :20:34.home crowd in a stadium that has been transformed. You would never

:20:35. > :20:41.know this is a football stadium, looking well with a track. But these

:20:42. > :20:46.athletes will be excited. Thank you for joining us. And there is

:20:47. > :20:51.coverage of the Diamond League all across the BBC tonight and tomorrow.

:20:52. > :20:59.Do not turn over to BBC Two yet. They will be on from that have been

:21:00. > :21:06.on since 6:30pm. And on BBC One tomorrow. Plus check Radio Scotland

:21:07. > :21:09.and the website for even more from the big weekend of athletics here at

:21:10. > :21:13.Hampden. Now time to zoom to the north east.

:21:14. > :21:17.And at Royal Aberdeen we will find Phil Goodlad. So what have been the

:21:18. > :21:23.highlights of round two at the Scottish Open?

:21:24. > :21:28.Good evening. Quite a day we have had. When I came to the course just

:21:29. > :21:35.before seven o'clock this morning, the flags were hanging, fast forward

:21:36. > :21:45.a few hours later and the wind went up providing some test for some of

:21:46. > :21:49.the best. On days like this, you head for the

:21:50. > :21:57.seaside? Don't be silly! The golf is on. After Rory McIlroy's brilliance,

:21:58. > :22:03.the challenge was on to emulate him. Early promise from Justin Rose. Lee

:22:04. > :22:11.Westwood's struggles continued. Justin Rose showing how it is done.

:22:12. > :22:14.Moving to five under. I was a couple of yesterday, everyone seemed to be

:22:15. > :22:22.going lower, I was finding it difficult. So after 36 holes, I am

:22:23. > :22:26.delighted. After shooting a course record yesterday, all eyes were on

:22:27. > :22:33.Rory McIlroy. What could he do today? Drop a shot at the first.

:22:34. > :22:37.Back to six under par. Then Russell knocks from Scotland was on the

:22:38. > :22:52.move, a brilliant birdie after two Eagles. -- Russell Knox. But he

:22:53. > :23:02.dropped five shots to those in the gallery. This dog is blind and a big

:23:03. > :23:08.part of the team. The boys love him. But falling out of love with the

:23:09. > :23:11.surroundings is Rory McIlroy, slipping farther back because of a

:23:12. > :23:18.double bogey. On a picture perfect day, some are finding Royal Aberdeen

:23:19. > :23:23.a little too hot to handle. And Rory McIlroy did, finishing
