:00:00. > :00:00.Police reveal that an 85-year-old Edinburgh woman

:00:00. > :00:14.attacked in her home was stabbed and possibly sexually assaulted.

:00:15. > :00:17.The quickie degree, a trial to speed up university courses

:00:18. > :00:22.The revellers head home and the clean up begins as T In The

:00:23. > :00:32.Next for the world champions is Scotland as the two sides meet

:00:33. > :00:47.Teams with a high expectation on them are more easy to beat. They are

:00:48. > :00:56.more vulnerable and it might be an opportunity for us.

:00:57. > :01:01.Extra police patrols are in operation in the Morningside area

:01:02. > :01:06.of Edinburgh after an elderly woman was stabbed and possibly sexually

:01:07. > :01:09.The attack happened on Friday afternoon and the 85-year-old victim

:01:10. > :01:12.is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

:01:13. > :01:15.The incident is being treated as attempted murder.

:01:16. > :01:29.It was in this far -- quiet area of Morningside that the woman was

:01:30. > :01:33.attacked on Friday afternoon. Her husband had gone to the local shops

:01:34. > :01:38.and when he returned he found his wife lying on the floor with life

:01:39. > :01:41.threatening injuries. We can confirm from her injuries that she has

:01:42. > :01:45.certainly been stabbed and there is evidence of blunt force trauma to

:01:46. > :01:49.the lady and she may have been the victim of a sexual assault. The

:01:50. > :01:54.police want to trace a man who was seen outside her home on Friday

:01:55. > :01:59.afternoon. He is described as average build and 18 to 30 years old

:02:00. > :02:03.with short dark hair and there could be a totally innocent explanation

:02:04. > :02:07.for him being there but we are keen to trace him and eliminate him from

:02:08. > :02:11.the enquiry. The events have shocked people living here. We do not know

:02:12. > :02:18.much about it but we are keeping our fingers crossed that she is OK. It

:02:19. > :02:22.is usual and quite terrifying for the older people. Police say attacks

:02:23. > :02:37.like this are rare and they have brought in extra officers to provide

:02:38. > :02:39.support. They are to reassure the community and also if anyone has

:02:40. > :02:42.seen or heard anything suspicious over the last week, no matter how

:02:43. > :02:45.trivial, they can speak to officers on the street and they can let us

:02:46. > :02:47.know what may be important in the investigation going forward. As they

:02:48. > :02:50.police continue their enquiries the victim remains in a critical goal --

:02:51. > :02:56.critical condition in hospital and police are warning people here to

:02:57. > :03:03.always ask for identification from anyone who calls at their door.

:03:04. > :03:05.A Scottish university is about to start a major trial

:03:06. > :03:08.of a scheme to allow students to get their degrees more quickly.

:03:09. > :03:10.Abertay University will give students doing certain courses

:03:11. > :03:13.the chance to complete their degrees in three years instead of the

:03:14. > :03:15.traditional four, by dramatically reducing the length of holidays.

:03:16. > :03:22.Our education correspondent Jamie McIvor's been finding out more.

:03:23. > :03:29.Graduation day at Abertay University in Dundee. It is the end of four

:03:30. > :03:34.years of hard study. In years to come it will be possible for some

:03:35. > :03:39.students to get their degree more quickly if they want to. The idea is

:03:40. > :03:44.to let students complete four years of study in just three by having

:03:45. > :03:48.shorter holidays. In our usual programme students study from 30

:03:49. > :03:52.weeks a year as in other universities but if students study

:03:53. > :03:56.for 45 weeks a year, they will still have holidays but they will be able

:03:57. > :04:00.to progress more quickly and graduate sooner but the experience

:04:01. > :04:05.week by week and hour by hour is exactly the same. These two people

:04:06. > :04:10.studied together but they disagree what they would have done. I think

:04:11. > :04:13.it gives students the ability to get into the workplace earlier and I

:04:14. > :04:18.think that would be beneficial -- beneficial to the University of the

:04:19. > :04:23.student. I liked having the long summer because you can go away and

:04:24. > :04:29.get experience in different fields. The trial has implications for the

:04:30. > :04:32.university staff as well. We are working with the staff in terms of

:04:33. > :04:37.preparing them for the changes and we think it is absolutely feasible

:04:38. > :04:41.that we can do this and we are keen that they maintain their research

:04:42. > :04:49.and it is more about how we manage the workload and the expectations.

:04:50. > :04:52.This is not the first time three-year degrees have been mooted

:04:53. > :04:59.but it is going to be the most widespread trial of the idea and the

:05:00. > :05:02.University may then extend it to other subjects.

:05:03. > :05:05.We met the former soldier who lost his legs in Afghanistan

:05:06. > :05:07.who's power lifting in the forthcoming Commonwealth Games.

:05:08. > :05:10.In sport, Scotland can beat the World Cup Champions, Germany.

:05:11. > :05:12.That's according to the former Scotland manager who

:05:13. > :05:17.And Lynsey Sharp admits her fifth place finish in the Diamond League

:05:18. > :05:28.has taught her a lesson for Glasgow 2014.

:05:29. > :05:32.The clean up has been underway all day at Balado in Kinross-shire after

:05:33. > :05:35.it hosted its last T In The Park music festival. 85,000 music fans

:05:36. > :05:38.were there over the three days but police say crime levels were low

:05:39. > :05:47.with fewer arrest than last year. Andrew Anderson reports.

:05:48. > :05:54.As the rain started to fall on a Balado, so did the silence. The

:05:55. > :05:59.music was over for another year. The T In The Park tented village

:06:00. > :06:06.deserted. One tent seems to be making its own way home. The last of

:06:07. > :06:11.85,000 music fans were saluted -- slowly drifting away. Good memories

:06:12. > :06:14.of this music Festival and the last on these fields. It is a fantastic

:06:15. > :06:18.place to have it and it has always been good but we are looking forward

:06:19. > :06:22.to next year because it is going to be big and have the castle there and

:06:23. > :06:28.it will be really beautiful but it will be missed. Yes, it will be.

:06:29. > :06:31.Arctic monkeys brought this T In The Park to a close and it was an

:06:32. > :06:38.emotional event. Next year these fans will be heading for the other

:06:39. > :06:43.side of Perthshire. Concerns about an underground oil pipeline at

:06:44. > :06:47.Balado have forced the move. There were people in the campsite saying

:06:48. > :06:53.they loved it here which we thought it was great and thousands of people

:06:54. > :06:57.were shouting it at same time and the local community have been

:06:58. > :06:59.fantastic and there are a lot of great friendships and relationships

:07:00. > :07:05.that we have built up and we we almost everyone here and it has been

:07:06. > :07:08.a great home and we would like to thank the community for letting it

:07:09. > :07:12.be at home for the last 18 years. As the clear up operation began the

:07:13. > :07:15.police said they were happy with the fans. It has gone exceptionally well

:07:16. > :07:20.and the crowd came to this last event here with a great attitude and

:07:21. > :07:26.we can only praise the behaviour of the people who have been here. It is

:07:27. > :07:28.farewell to Balado and T In The Park believe the new venue will be just

:07:29. > :07:33.as good for the fans and the bands. A look at other stories from the

:07:34. > :07:44.across the country: A reactor in East Lothian has

:07:45. > :07:47.stopped producing power due to an unplanned outage. EDF energy said

:07:48. > :07:53.the reactor went off-line this afternoon. The unit is expected to

:07:54. > :07:57.remain unavailable until next week. The spokesman said there were no

:07:58. > :08:00.safety, health or environmental impacts.

:08:01. > :08:03.A man has been taken to hospital with serious leg injuries after an

:08:04. > :08:09.accident at an industrial estate in Aberdeenshire. The accident happened

:08:10. > :08:12.at hunting oil services and ambulance and fire crews were called

:08:13. > :08:18.out. Staff at Scotland's largest bus

:08:19. > :08:22.company will receive an extra ?120 from their employer for their

:08:23. > :08:27.contribution to the hosting of the Commonwealth Games. Each of the

:08:28. > :08:29.staff will receive the one-off payment providing they worked their

:08:30. > :08:35.rostered shifts throughout the event. The sum was agreed through

:08:36. > :08:39.unit in -- union negotiations. A consultation on developments in

:08:40. > :08:45.the Loch Lomond and natural Park has closed today after the deadline was

:08:46. > :08:48.extended. The park says that the current infrastructure cannot cope

:08:49. > :08:53.with pressure and it is planning to update the infrastructure to see it

:08:54. > :09:02.through the next 20 years. -- Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

:09:03. > :09:04.The athletes in Team Scotland are now going

:09:05. > :09:06.through their final preparations for the Commonwealth Games,

:09:07. > :09:11.Amongst them those who will be taking part in the para sports is

:09:12. > :09:14.former Royal Engineer Micky Yule who lost both legs while serving

:09:15. > :09:17.He is competing in the power lifting and after coming

:09:18. > :09:20.fifth in the world championships this year, he is very focussed

:09:21. > :09:26.In 2010 a roadside bomb robbed Micky Yule of his legs but not his

:09:27. > :09:29.competitive spirit. Four years ago at this time I was in an intensive

:09:30. > :09:33.care unit because I had just got injured in Afghanistan and I washed

:09:34. > :09:37.-- watched the World Cup final from intensive care and I was trying to

:09:38. > :09:44.catch some of the other Games in there so it has gone full circle.

:09:45. > :09:49.The Commonwealth Games is a very significant milestone. This might be

:09:50. > :09:52.the end of the beginning so it is the end to getting overall of your

:09:53. > :09:55.injuries and a rehab and the surgeries and now it is moving on to

:09:56. > :10:01.getting on with your life and better stuff. Mickey is from muscle bra and

:10:02. > :10:07.he was powerlifting when he had his own legs but the level of training

:10:08. > :10:11.he did then and now just does not compare. I am working a lot harder.

:10:12. > :10:16.It means that all of my lifts have gone up from what I used to lift

:10:17. > :10:21.when I was able-bodied to what I am lifting now with my disabilities. It

:10:22. > :10:29.is probably about 30 kilograms more. He is thinking more about Glasgow

:10:30. > :10:33.and hopefully Rio than hell but I do not think it is a big day in my

:10:34. > :10:37.life, it is an annoying day and not the best AI and going to have, I am

:10:38. > :10:40.sure I will have better but I do not dwell on it too much. There is too

:10:41. > :10:45.much going on to start thinking about and too many things to

:10:46. > :10:48.achieve. Micky Yule will have to keep this focus and concentration on

:10:49. > :10:50.to start thinking about and too many things to achieve. Micky Yule will

:10:51. > :11:00.have to keep this focus and concentration longer

:11:01. > :11:03.With just over a week until the Commonwealth Games there

:11:04. > :11:05.are still tickets available for some of the most sought-after events.

:11:06. > :11:08.The Glasgow 2014 website shows tickets still for sale for

:11:09. > :11:10.a number of medal sessions including the men's and women's 100m finals.

:11:11. > :11:14.Organisers say additional tickets were made available after final

:11:15. > :11:16.confirmation from tour operators, participating nations and sponsors.

:11:17. > :11:30.They say it is a small percentage of the overall capacity.

:11:31. > :11:33.With just nine days until the start of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

:11:34. > :11:36.we'll continue our look at some of the Scottish athletes who've

:11:37. > :11:40.Every night this week we'll feature one athlete from across a range

:11:41. > :11:43.Tonight we hear from the hurdler whose face appears

:11:44. > :11:47.Poster girl Elidh Child says the thought of competing in these

:11:48. > :11:51.Our Games reporter Jane Lewis caught up with her in her adopted home

:11:52. > :11:55.than Bath is an English city boasting Georgian architecture and

:11:56. > :12:00.picturesque landscape, hinting to past industry. The Roman baths

:12:01. > :12:04.attract millions of visitors every year but this world-class athlete

:12:05. > :12:10.has not been among them, despite living here for three years. I moved

:12:11. > :12:14.here to train with Malcolm Arnold and be with the squad of hurdlers

:12:15. > :12:19.that he has their and he coached Colin Jackson to his success and he

:12:20. > :12:25.has world champion, and Olympic champion and world record holders so

:12:26. > :12:30.he is the for hurdles. I know we are in Bath but wherever you go in

:12:31. > :12:34.Glasgow you are the poster girl. It is really nice that people are

:12:35. > :12:40.getting behind the Games. Being a poster girl comes with pressure but

:12:41. > :12:44.it just happened for me. Hopefully I can make everyone proud. He started

:12:45. > :12:49.as a swimmer, why not go down the swimming route? You had to train

:12:50. > :12:54.twice a day, first thing in the morning and if anyone knows me I am

:12:55. > :12:58.not the best morning person. At the time I was having more success in

:12:59. > :13:01.the athletics so I love the swimming and I still try to go swimming as

:13:02. > :13:06.often as I can and I love to watch it but I do not think I would have

:13:07. > :13:10.been as good. I think I have had a lot more success in athletics and I

:13:11. > :13:15.would have in swimming. In terms of what you dream about four Glasgow

:13:16. > :13:19.2014, do you let yourself daydream? I want to go there and run to form.

:13:20. > :13:24.I want my fastest race of the year to be on that track. All those

:13:25. > :13:35.minerals will hopefully fill you with something. Good luck. Thank you

:13:36. > :14:02.very much. Cheers. Now some news just coming into us tonight. At

:14:03. > :14:07.around 1030 Jean Campbell was seen on CCTV walking her dog to Crown

:14:08. > :14:12.Hill Park. She never made it back to her flat which was nearby. The next

:14:13. > :14:17.morning her husband came home from his night shift. He went to look for

:14:18. > :14:22.her as she was not in the flat. He found his wife's body in the park.

:14:23. > :14:30.Their dog was still there. Police say she had died of Ireland to

:14:31. > :14:34.death. The case featured twice on the BBC Crimewatch programme. During

:14:35. > :14:40.an appeal last month the police said her family had been devastated by

:14:41. > :14:43.the loss of a wife, mother and grandmother and they deserved

:14:44. > :14:47.answers. This evening two men appeared here at Glasgow Sheriff

:14:48. > :14:52.Court. Paul Ward was charged with the murder of Jean Campbell and

:14:53. > :14:56.22-year-old Thomas Leydon was accused of attempting to convert the

:14:57. > :15:12.course of justice. Neither made any plea or declaration and both are

:15:13. > :15:16.being held in custody. It is back to sport now and we just have a little

:15:17. > :15:20.bit of football. Germany thought they had met their biggest challenge

:15:21. > :15:23.but worst to come. They have no idea what lies ahead,

:15:24. > :15:27.who could it be? Scotland can beat

:15:28. > :15:29.the new world champions. So says a man who knows what it's

:15:30. > :15:32.like to win against Germany, After their victory over Argentina

:15:33. > :15:36.last night, the World Cup winners' next competitive match is in

:15:37. > :15:53.September against Gordon Strachan's If you are looking for a German

:15:54. > :15:59.football top, you may have to act fast. This store in Glasgow expects

:16:00. > :16:04.to sell out tonight. It has captured the imagination and they may not

:16:05. > :16:07.have the megastars like Lionel messy or Cristiano Ronaldo but the

:16:08. > :16:12.Scottish people appreciate the way they have played the game. The

:16:13. > :16:17.reason this name on this shirt is proving popular might be something

:16:18. > :16:23.to do with a special goal last night on a specially Asian. Working it in

:16:24. > :16:28.and a chance. Mac he has scored for Germany. Germany are the champions

:16:29. > :16:33.of world football and their next competitive match is Scotland. My

:16:34. > :16:37.friend is going to Germany just for the atmosphere of the match because

:16:38. > :16:41.it will be some reception and it will be an amazing stadium. I am

:16:42. > :16:45.looking forward to it. We have a past record of beating current world

:16:46. > :16:50.champions on their own turf so I think we can go there and do it. I

:16:51. > :16:56.think we will win 2-1 against Germany. Not so fanciful if you

:16:57. > :17:01.remember Germany hosting a thin 1999. The man who masterminded that

:17:02. > :17:05.when is tipping Scotland to cause another upset. I genuinely think we

:17:06. > :17:11.will get at least a draw. There might be a bit of complacency

:17:12. > :17:13.setting in after that result and the expectation, teams when there is

:17:14. > :17:23.expectation on them are more easy to beat. I will take that point. Eat is

:17:24. > :17:28.not wrong in saying that. Scotland are past masters at beating world

:17:29. > :17:33.champions, most famously England in 1967 and the latest edition of

:17:34. > :17:37.football's oldest international fixture has been confirmed for

:17:38. > :17:49.Celtic Park in November. It would be great to get a bit more

:17:50. > :17:53.of that. Celtic have travelled for their Champions League qualifier. It

:17:54. > :17:58.is the first competitive match in the season and the first time at the

:17:59. > :18:01.health for Ronnie and John. We are looking forward to this and we want

:18:02. > :18:07.to be there. We want to be on the big stage. We want to take care of

:18:08. > :18:10.the team tomorrow night but it will not be easy, it never is at the

:18:11. > :18:15.start of the season. We will look forward to it because it is a good

:18:16. > :18:20.challenge. A chance of a first major for Monty. Colin Montgomery has been

:18:21. > :18:25.invited to next year's US Open having just claimed the US senior

:18:26. > :18:29.title in a play-off. Luke Patience and his partner Elliot

:18:30. > :18:33.Willis have won the European Championships in Athens. They built

:18:34. > :18:38.up an unassailable lead over their rivals and took a title with a day

:18:39. > :18:42.to stare -- spare in the event. The world athletes have started

:18:43. > :18:46.arriving for the Commonwealth Games. The sports village in Aberdeen is

:18:47. > :18:49.now home to team Cameroon and the Africans are training in the

:18:50. > :18:54.north-east before moving into the Games Village for 2014.

:18:55. > :18:56.There are more sports stories plus all the latest news 24 hours a day

:18:57. > :19:02.on our website. Talking of the Commonwealth Games,

:19:03. > :19:04.the UK and European 800m champion Lynsey Sharp says she is determined

:19:05. > :19:07.to run at her best in Glasgow, despite revealing she'll need this

:19:08. > :19:09.surgery this autumn. And she admits she's learned

:19:10. > :19:12.a lot after finishing fifth at this weekend's Diamond League

:19:13. > :19:15.meeting at Hampden. Here's our Commonwealth Games

:19:16. > :19:34.reporter, Lisa Summers. It was a strong line-up for the 800

:19:35. > :19:37.metres final. Lynsey Sharp has been in top form. She smashed her

:19:38. > :19:41.personal best and got under two minutes less than two weeks ago and

:19:42. > :19:46.she was a fraction away from that this weekend but the end result was

:19:47. > :19:51.a sixth place. I was disappointed straight after the race but after

:19:52. > :19:56.looking at it back it really wasn't as bad as I first made out. She is

:19:57. > :20:01.fighting an infection in her Achilles heel that will leave her

:20:02. > :20:05.needing surgery in the autumn. It has been a chronic infection so I

:20:06. > :20:09.have to dress it every day and put a silver dressing inside it to keep it

:20:10. > :20:13.open so that the infection has somewhere to get out because if it

:20:14. > :20:18.closes over it will swell up. At night I have to put a vacuum

:20:19. > :20:22.dressing on it which literally sucks out the infection. Today she is

:20:23. > :20:27.giving a masterclass to aspiring athletes in Edinburgh. Turn and go

:20:28. > :20:30.the other way. She will run in the Madrid this weekend before returning

:20:31. > :20:36.to Scotland and Hamdan for the Commonwealth Games. Hopefully at the

:20:37. > :20:38.Commonwealth I will not get a fright when I see the massive crowd amber

:20:39. > :20:43.lights on because I have already been out there and seen it.

:20:44. > :20:44.And Jackie, I believe you have a particular

:20:45. > :21:11.She will be thinking that I am stalking her. I knew her as a baby.

:21:12. > :21:20.I changed her nappy. We have got it out of her!

:21:21. > :21:30.The Queens Batten relay has reached Inverclyde. Among the places people

:21:31. > :21:34.turned out work Port Glasgow and there was a dragon among the baton

:21:35. > :21:40.bearers. It is seven years to the days since

:21:41. > :21:44.John Muir's son was murdered in an unprovoked knife attack. The baton

:21:45. > :21:51.has a knack of honouring achievement and its arrival here was to pay

:21:52. > :21:55.tribute to John Neill's tireless campaigning for stricter knife laws.

:21:56. > :22:01.It is seven years since the incident, it is his seventh

:22:02. > :22:05.anniversary today. Duncan Ballantyne proved that fitness is not just a

:22:06. > :22:10.business opportunity as he did his lap of honour with local children.

:22:11. > :22:15.The Dragons Den star was nominated for his charity work. I enjoy it.

:22:16. > :22:19.Half of my work now is involved in charitable stuff and I am fortunate

:22:20. > :22:24.that my company allows me to do things like that so it is great. The

:22:25. > :22:28.wind and rain struggled to dent the mood in the face of song and dance

:22:29. > :22:32.from local children who greeted the arrival of a famous face from

:22:33. > :22:37.Waterloo Road which is filmed here. It is an exciting thing to be part

:22:38. > :22:41.of and I got nervous when I saw the baton coming down and I didn't want

:22:42. > :22:48.to drop it. It is a really good atmosphere here. With just over a

:22:49. > :22:50.week to go until the Games the baton is tantalisingly close to Glasgow

:22:51. > :22:57.with the help of some celebrity friends.

:22:58. > :23:03.Within the half -- last half hour two of the baton bearers did

:23:04. > :23:08.something pretty special. David passed the baton to his partner

:23:09. > :23:13.Susan and we can see it, he presented her with a ring and asked

:23:14. > :23:16.her to marry them. She said yes, thank goodness, and after posing for

:23:17. > :23:26.the pictures, sheep and after posing for the pictures, eat that!

:23:27. > :23:33.How do I follow this tonight? I do not know. It is a mixed bag as far

:23:34. > :23:38.as the weather is concerned with some dry days and fairly wet days in

:23:39. > :23:42.the forecast this week as well. Tonight the rain has been plaguing

:23:43. > :23:47.Scotland and it will continue to move away into the North Sea. It

:23:48. > :23:52.will eventually become confined to Shetland. Elsewhere it becomes dry

:23:53. > :23:56.with clear spells. They will be a few showers across western and

:23:57. > :24:00.northern coastal areas. Not a cold night to come. Temperatures should

:24:01. > :24:04.hold up around double figures. In some sheltered rural spots it will

:24:05. > :24:25.be around five or 6 degrees. The wind will ease down with the effects

:24:26. > :24:30.-- exceptional some isolated showers and the rain across Shetland were

:24:31. > :24:37.clear during the day as well. Taking a closer look at around 4pm

:24:38. > :24:42.tomorrow, spells of sunshine and brightness. Temperatures will

:24:43. > :24:48.respond accordingly. Highs of around 21 or 22 degrees will be similar

:24:49. > :24:51.across the north-east. More cloud in the Outer Hebrides and sky and the

:24:52. > :24:55.Highlands tomorrow afternoon and we will see some rain following year

:24:56. > :25:02.later and highs of around 17 degrees. Tomorrow evening we hold

:25:03. > :25:07.onto a lot of dry and bright weather, just one or two showers

:25:08. > :25:11.around, especially over high ground. More in the way of cloud across

:25:12. > :25:15.western parts and we will eventually see the rain moving in during the

:25:16. > :25:19.overnight period. Taking a look ahead to Wednesday, cloudy and wet

:25:20. > :25:23.is how it starts but the rain will tend to fragment during the day and

:25:24. > :25:26.there will be dry and bright interludes with highs of 21 degrees.

:25:27. > :25:28.That is the forecast. Now, a reminder of tonight's main

:25:29. > :25:38.news: Extra police patrols are in place in

:25:39. > :25:44.Morningside after an elderly woman was stabbed and possibly sexually

:25:45. > :25:47.assaulted at home. That is reporting Scotland. Good evening.
