:00:00. > 3:59:59has been hit by a missile in northern Gaza. That's all from the

:00:00. > :00:00.BBC Tonight, on your national news. Day

:00:07. > :00:09.1 of Glasgow's Commonwealth Games, and Team Scotland has already struck

:00:10. > :00:16.gold. Local girl Kimberley Renicks brings the SECC crowd to its feet,

:00:17. > :00:20.with success in the judo. And more medals are guaranteed there tonight.

:00:21. > :00:22.There's been cycling success too. Paisley's Aileen McGlynn and her

:00:23. > :00:25.pilot take silver after losing to England in the para-sprint tandem.

:00:26. > :00:28.Meanwhile, it's a huge night for Scotland here at Tollcross in the

:00:29. > :00:36.city's east end. After making it through this morning's heats, no

:00:37. > :00:38.fewer than seven Scots, including red hot favourite Michael Jamieson,

:00:39. > :00:41.are in finals action this evening. And twelve sports, ten venues,

:00:42. > :00:43.hundreds of thousands of visitors. We look at how the city's been

:00:44. > :00:46.coping with this first day of Good evening from Tollcross where,

:00:47. > :01:13.in half an hour's time 5,000 spectators will raise the roof of

:01:14. > :01:16.this showpiece pool. The swimming finals are one of the hottest

:01:17. > :01:20.tickets at these Games, certainly for the home support, and that's

:01:21. > :01:23.because it's one of the events in which Scotland hopes to shine. This

:01:24. > :01:26.evening Hannah Miley, Robbie Renwick and Michael Jamieson are among those

:01:27. > :01:48.going for gold - more on their hopes The let us hear more about the judo.

:01:49. > :01:53.Thank you. It is the first Gold medal four teams Scotland at these

:01:54. > :01:57.Commonwealth Games. It happened just a few moments ago. Rapturous

:01:58. > :02:14.applause for Kimberley Renicks in the judo. The 48 K category. Here is

:02:15. > :02:19.how it happened. I think one of the problems is the Indonesian has had

:02:20. > :02:28.it too easy throughout the day. It is not going as planned. Beautiful!

:02:29. > :02:35.She has got it. Kimberley Renicks. Can she and her sister do the

:02:36. > :02:40.double? That is the question. What a night it is for the family.

:02:41. > :02:47.Kimberley Renicks is a part-time carer for her mum. In less than half

:02:48. > :02:54.an hour, her sister will be going in a final as well. Louise Renicks is

:02:55. > :02:58.in the final of the 52 K category. Hopefully we can update you on that

:02:59. > :03:02.before the end of the programme. There is another chance of the Gold

:03:03. > :03:10.medal tonight as Stephanie Inglis from Inverness has also reached the

:03:11. > :03:16.final. The medals don't stop there. A bronze for John Buchanan in the

:03:17. > :03:22.last few seconds. The chance of another two bronze medals for Connie

:03:23. > :03:29.Ramsay and James Miller. From judo alone, the Meadowhall could be three

:03:30. > :03:34.gold and at least three bronze. That would be good. Scotland has won

:03:35. > :03:39.silver in the velodrome. Aileen McGlynn and Louise Haston

:03:40. > :03:42.just lost out to England pairing of Sophie Thornhill and Helen Scott

:03:43. > :03:56.in the paracycling sprint tandem Success in the judo but the first

:03:57. > :04:01.medal for Scotland in these games came right here in the velodrome. It

:04:02. > :04:09.was courtesy of Aileen McGlynn -- Aileen McGlynn and her pilot. The 17

:04:10. > :04:14.-- silver in the para-sprint tandem. It was the best of three races.

:04:15. > :04:25.England took the races to claim the gold. England just won the first

:04:26. > :04:28.race by half the wheel. They won the secondary is more convincingly.

:04:29. > :04:36.Still, a silver rip medal for Aileen McGlynn and her pilot. They have the

:04:37. > :04:42.balls of being the first Scottish medallists at these Commonwealth

:04:43. > :04:54.Games. Let us hope that success is catching. Hopes are high in the

:04:55. > :04:59.swimming pool tonight. Here is the story of the swimming pool so far.

:05:00. > :05:08.There was a huge roar as Michael Jamieson went off on the 200 meter

:05:09. > :05:12.breaststroke. Mike synchronised Scottish swim team, there was only

:05:13. > :05:19.ever three in the race. Murdoch pulled away to win the heat, a

:05:20. > :05:24.personal best. I am delighted with that swim. I have been swimming

:05:25. > :05:30.really well when we were at the training camp in Aberdeen. I am in

:05:31. > :05:37.great shop -- sheet. I am not a robot, it would not be natural if I

:05:38. > :05:43.did not win occasionally. It is great to have their support, so many

:05:44. > :05:46.people. Even the volunteers and the people in the village supporting

:05:47. > :05:51.us. It is brilliant to have that behind us. The first race was the

:05:52. > :05:54.women's 400 metres individual medley. Hannah Miley would like she

:05:55. > :06:03.had work to do. She medley. Hannah Miley would like she

:06:04. > :06:08.comfortable winner in the end. There was plenty to keep the crowds

:06:09. > :06:14.entertained. More Scottish triumph and another one two, three in the

:06:15. > :06:20.400 metres freestyle. I have had a good season of training so I know I

:06:21. > :06:26.have a background for the 400. Dead chuffed to get one two, three with

:06:27. > :06:33.these boys. The only disappointment was the failure to qualify for

:06:34. > :06:39.Sophie McClatchy. It was a fantastic start for the Scottish swim team,

:06:40. > :06:45.just as they promised. The sun is shining, lots of people standing

:06:46. > :06:51.outside Tollcross tonight. We have Australians in the crowd. Who are

:06:52. > :06:57.you supporting tonight? Michael. Do you hope he can deliver? Yes,

:06:58. > :07:04.definitely. Another gold for Hannah Miley hopefully. Mixed feelings, we

:07:05. > :07:10.obviously support England but we want Michael Jamieson to do well and

:07:11. > :07:14.some English medals as well. Good luck tonight. High hopes for Michael

:07:15. > :07:22.Jamieson and Hannah Miley in the pool, but what else can the Scottish

:07:23. > :07:26.team deliver? And here we have one of the best

:07:27. > :07:32.Scottish swimmers in history, David Wilkie, so many Scottish hopes in

:07:33. > :07:37.the pool tonight? Yes, we have lots to choose from. Start off with

:07:38. > :07:42.Hannah Miley, she will have tough race but she is on home territory

:07:43. > :07:48.and she should just get it but it will be tight. The 400 freestyle,

:07:49. > :07:53.three Scottish boys than that. Robbie Renwick is the defending

:07:54. > :07:59.champion. He has made the finals so he has a chance but it will be tough

:08:00. > :08:05.for him. The 200 breaststroke, who would've thought we would have been

:08:06. > :08:10.the Scotus qualifiers. Michael Jamieson got a bit of a skier this

:08:11. > :08:19.morning. -- three Scottish qualifiers. I think Michael has

:08:20. > :08:24.enough to take it tonight. Michael Jamieson said nurse got to him. How

:08:25. > :08:29.bigger danger is that that's so much pressure becomes a difficult thing

:08:30. > :08:35.and gets to them? He would be nervous in the last few days. He has

:08:36. > :08:38.admitted that. The breaststroke is a technical stroke. If you tense up,

:08:39. > :08:51.you cannot relax. technical stroke. If you tense up,

:08:52. > :08:56.this morning. He is capable of doing that tonight. Are you worried about

:08:57. > :09:05.Scottish swimmer? Well, it is not an Scottish swimmer? Well, it is not an

:09:06. > :09:11.Rio de Janeiro, we will talk again but until then, no.

:09:12. > :09:15.Hopes are high here - but hopes have been dashed that the man who

:09:16. > :09:18.was to be one of the Games' star performers has had to pull out.

:09:19. > :09:24.The reigning Olympic 5,000 and 10,000 metre champion has

:09:25. > :09:27.In a statement he said he would take a few more weeks

:09:28. > :09:57.Now we have the coach and father of Hannah Miley, what were your last

:09:58. > :10:05.words to her? Just enjoy yourself. The work is done, just go out and do

:10:06. > :10:09.your best. She is great, she is really happy. She has had a very

:10:10. > :10:15.challenging season. I think she is in a really great place at the

:10:16. > :10:21.moment. After the disappointment of London when she came second, you

:10:22. > :10:26.have a point to prove tonight? I guess people want to see things like

:10:27. > :10:31.that but ultimately it is about season to season and preparing as

:10:32. > :10:35.best you can. That is all we can do and that is what she has done. She

:10:36. > :10:46.started the season tremendously well. She still qualified a week

:10:47. > :10:51.later and raced well. It is a remarkable story. We are a year

:10:52. > :10:57.wiser and she is a tough girl and I have learned a lot from her. You

:10:58. > :11:02.have been under a certain amount of pressure as well, the fact that you

:11:03. > :11:07.still train in a local swimming pool in Inverurie, despite the lure of

:11:08. > :11:13.going to bigger facilities. Why do you stay there? There is a lot more

:11:14. > :11:17.to the swimming than the facilities. It is a combination of

:11:18. > :11:27.things. She trust the environment and the coaching. It is a much more

:11:28. > :11:32.comfortable environment. She is very trusting. The family environment

:11:33. > :11:36.gives her a great basis. She also trains in the Aberdeen sports

:11:37. > :11:41.village which has made a big difference. Look forward next two

:11:42. > :11:47.years towards the Olympics. Will it be harder to watch the race as a

:11:48. > :11:58.father or coach? Goodness me, as a father. I pretend to watch as a

:11:59. > :12:05.coach but I am a father. I remember 2010 as the head coach. She was

:12:06. > :12:11.about to swim. I said, do not expect anything year and she went out and

:12:12. > :12:17.won it. The country is rooting for you and for her. Fingers crossed.

:12:18. > :12:23.Thank you for joining us. That visit from eyes. The seats are filling up.

:12:24. > :12:28.We have 15 minutes to go. Let's hope we get the glint of gold this

:12:29. > :12:32.evening. Back to the studio. Thank you very much.

:12:33. > :12:33.The families of the four people killed

:12:34. > :12:36.in a car crash near Polmont say they are devastated by their deaths.

:12:37. > :12:38.A mother, father and their two young children

:12:39. > :12:41.died when their car collided with a lorry on the A801 yesterday.

:12:42. > :12:52.Police officers were back at the crash scene today searching for

:12:53. > :12:57.evidence which may help them help -- which may help them find out how the

:12:58. > :13:02.accident happened. Judges had been paid to 23-year-old Graham Lockhart

:13:03. > :13:12.and Shauna Robb from Bathgate who died with their two children. Their

:13:13. > :13:15.black Fiat was travelling north on the A801 near the lock Alan

:13:16. > :13:21.roundabout when it was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry. This

:13:22. > :13:27.is terrible. The circumstances are horrendous. To lose a family unit is

:13:28. > :13:37.shocking. To lose to MAG appearance and two young children is a tragedy.

:13:38. > :13:43.-- two young parents. Police are keen to speak to a silver people

:13:44. > :13:49.carrier scene near the accident. The road is busy link load. Locals have

:13:50. > :13:54.described it as notorious and safety concerns have been raised. As the

:13:55. > :13:58.police continue their investigation, family and friends of those who died

:13:59. > :14:17.struggled to come to terms with the loss of two young children and their

:14:18. > :14:24.parents. . Following a hearing today, the Court of Session upheld a

:14:25. > :14:29.decision denying to prisoners the right to vote in the independence

:14:30. > :14:34.referendum. The two prisoners were saying that the Scottish referendum

:14:35. > :14:40.is of such fundamental importance because it could change the way in

:14:41. > :14:44.which their lives will be left where they are to be a yes vote. They

:14:45. > :14:52.would be living in a new and independent country. That was one of

:14:53. > :14:58.the arguments. They said that they should have been allowed to vote.

:14:59. > :15:07.They said that into other EU countries only, are prisoners

:15:08. > :15:12.blocked from voting. They were putting forward that argument as

:15:13. > :15:21.well. But it was particularly on the referendum issue. The Independence

:15:22. > :15:27.fought could have an impact on their lives, they said. What implications

:15:28. > :15:32.could there have been if they had won the appeal? If the judges had

:15:33. > :15:37.ruled in their favour, and there had been rulings in Europe forcing the

:15:38. > :15:45.UK to allow prisoners to vote in domestic elections, the government

:15:46. > :15:49.is not voting on that, but the implication could have meant that

:15:50. > :15:55.prisoners would have been able to vote in a referendum in and out on

:15:56. > :15:57.Europe which the Tories say they will offer after the next general

:15:58. > :16:01.election. Thank you very much. Plans have been revealed to protect

:16:02. > :16:04.Scotland's seas and the birds, whales and other species

:16:05. > :16:06.which depend on them. A network of thirty

:16:07. > :16:08.Marine Protected Areas is to be set Our environment correspondent,

:16:09. > :16:17.David Miller, reports. Scotland's sees a rich with marine

:16:18. > :16:23.life, but these are Scotland's sees a rich with marine

:16:24. > :16:29.which can easily be damaged by human activity. Now they will have greater

:16:30. > :16:37.protection than ever before. From West Coast to East Coast, from

:16:38. > :16:42.Shetland to the Solway Firth and Berwickshire, today's announcement

:16:43. > :16:46.means more than a fifth of Scottish seas are now in specially protected

:16:47. > :16:51.areas. Fishermen's leaders have given the changes are cautious

:16:52. > :16:57.welcome. They have helped shape the plans along with the environmental

:16:58. > :17:03.groups and scientists. All the competing interests are now signed

:17:04. > :17:10.up to protect overseas. We have a responsibility as a nation to look

:17:11. > :17:14.after these habitats. Out here we have the Firth of Forth... The

:17:15. > :17:17.warmest welcome have the Firth of Forth... The

:17:18. > :17:21.conservationists who have campaigned for a marine protected areas.

:17:22. > :17:25.conservationists who have campaigned delighted. It is a

:17:26. > :17:28.conservationists who have campaigned Scottish seas. If these sites are

:17:29. > :17:34.well managed, they can help our seas come back to health. That is the key

:17:35. > :17:38.message today. Our fragile and beautiful marine echo systems can

:17:39. > :17:46.help themselves if they are given the chance. -- ecosystems.

:17:47. > :17:48.A funeral service for the renowned golf coach Bob

:17:49. > :17:52.The father of former Ryder Cup captain Sam Torrance,

:17:53. > :17:54.he was best known for his work with the two-times Open

:17:55. > :17:57.Champion Padraig Harrington - who described his tutor as "a genius".

:17:58. > :18:13.Bob Torrance died last week of cancer, aged 82.

:18:14. > :18:15.Archaeologists in Edinburgh say five years of work

:18:16. > :18:18.has shed new light on the lives and deaths of people in Leith as

:18:19. > :18:21.It follows a dig which unearthed hundreds

:18:22. > :18:23.of bodies during preparation for the capital's Tram project.

:18:24. > :18:26.Experts have been analysing details of their diet and lifestyle, and

:18:27. > :18:31.even drafted in artists to recreate the faces of three of them.

:18:32. > :18:38.It gives them an identity which I personally would be very pleased

:18:39. > :18:40.about after all these years. I got my face back in a way.

:18:41. > :18:43.Now back to the Commowealth Games and thousands of spectators have

:18:44. > :18:45.been watching the first day of competition in Glasgow.

:18:46. > :18:50.Our reporter Aileen Clarke joined them.

:18:51. > :19:00.Games fans don't come more of passionate than the family from

:19:01. > :19:05.Australia's Gold Coast. Amazing, Scottish people have been so

:19:06. > :19:10.friendly and welcoming. They are amazing. And though whether! We

:19:11. > :19:16.thought it was going to be really cold. But apparently this is normal

:19:17. > :19:23.for you guys in summer. What are you off to see today? Weightlifting. We

:19:24. > :19:28.have our daughter weightlifting at three o'clock this afternoon. How

:19:29. > :19:37.exciting? Just a little bit. Remember the name. They are far from

:19:38. > :19:43.the only family on tenterhooks. The game is in family are looking

:19:44. > :19:47.forward to swimming. I do not think enough people know how much work he

:19:48. > :19:52.does. That is why we all get involved in is as much as he does.

:19:53. > :19:59.We all feel the nervous and stuff like that. After all these years, it

:20:00. > :20:04.comes down to this one night. I have butterflies. I could not keep it

:20:05. > :20:09.together last night at the ceremony either. Spectators have engaged team

:20:10. > :20:17.into the spirit of the games throughout the city. We have been to

:20:18. > :20:22.weightlifting this morning. Our first experience, it was fantastic.

:20:23. > :20:32.I really enjoyed it. Some had come prepared. We are you going? We were

:20:33. > :20:39.in the gymnasts. The city centre is buzzing with visitors. It seems that

:20:40. > :20:45.after the Opening Ceremony, the duke of Wellington is even more popular

:20:46. > :20:49.with photographers today. The Highland Terrier is where the stars

:20:50. > :20:58.of the show last night. These two seem to enjoy the attention. Hamish

:20:59. > :21:06.took it in his stride. When I walked in I just thought, this is it. It

:21:07. > :21:14.did not go to plan last night, Jock was a bit reluctant. He did not like

:21:15. > :21:27.the courts. He does not we are courts. I'd is carried him and it

:21:28. > :21:33.was fine. -- I just carried him. All around the venue, the Clydesiders

:21:34. > :21:36.were trying to get smiles. Let us find out what the answer is like in

:21:37. > :21:45.the merchant city. Plenty of people around? It is fantastic year. It is

:21:46. > :21:49.only day one, but Glasgow has taken these games to its heart. We are

:21:50. > :21:56.right in the middle of the merchant city. It has been taken over from

:21:57. > :22:02.one big street party. The atmosphere is electric. There are more than

:22:03. > :22:12.200,000 extra people in the city tonight. Many more people have come

:22:13. > :22:17.a long, not just for the games. Perhaps that is because they saw the

:22:18. > :22:25.Opening Ceremony last night on the television. It attracted more than 2

:22:26. > :22:28.million viewers in Scotland. Sport is not for everyone and the

:22:29. > :22:34.organisers have thought of that. We are right in the middle of the

:22:35. > :22:40.cultural festival which is carrying on throughout the games. We have

:22:41. > :22:46.music playing at the moment. There is only one sure in town tonight and

:22:47. > :22:53.that is the swimming. If you want to see the finest Scottish swimmers

:22:54. > :23:00.appear tonight, you can on the big screen at Glasgow Green or at

:23:01. > :23:05.specific key. Before we go, a reminder that Scotland has won its

:23:06. > :23:13.first gold at judo. Our reporter is in Glasgow. Great news. Absolutely

:23:14. > :23:20.fantastic news. Thank you very much. The gold medal came about half an

:23:21. > :23:24.hour ago. It was won by 26-year-old Kimberley Renicks from Coatbridge in

:23:25. > :23:32.the judo. It was an electric atmosphere. We wondered about the

:23:33. > :23:36.benefit of the home crowd. Inside that hall, it was electric and I am

:23:37. > :23:45.a veteran of these Commonwealth Games. The first Gold medal for

:23:46. > :23:49.Kimberley Renicks. Her big sister, Louise Renicks, will be on the mat

:23:50. > :23:56.any time now because she is also in a final. She is in the heavier

:23:57. > :24:03.weight category. What a day for the family. There could be a third gold

:24:04. > :24:10.medal also from Stephanie Inglis from Inverness. Six medals

:24:11. > :24:15.guaranteed 14 Scotland on day one. We have all been talking about the

:24:16. > :24:21.swimming, Michael Jamieson and Hannah Miley, several -- seven medal

:24:22. > :24:30.chances there. It is all adding up to a fantastic day 114 Scotland.

:24:31. > :24:36.Thank you very much Rona. Some fantastic weather as well. Let us

:24:37. > :24:41.get the latest. Christopher is up on the roof.

:24:42. > :24:50.Hello there. If you take a look behind me you can see where the

:24:51. > :24:54.gymnastics is taking place. You can see down the river that it is

:24:55. > :24:56.gymnastics is taking place. You can beautiful day here in Glasgow.

:24:57. > :24:59.gymnastics is taking place. You can beautiful day across the

:25:00. > :25:06.gymnastics is taking place. You can the country. 29 degrees. If you like

:25:07. > :25:13.the heat, it has been a lovely day. It will stage I and sunny this

:25:14. > :25:19.evening. It will stay dry, perhaps the risk of a shower in Inverness.

:25:20. > :25:29.We will see the mist returning across the North Sea coast. It will

:25:30. > :25:35.not be called. In the West, temperatures more like the mid

:25:36. > :25:44.teens. A familiar start tomorrow, the mist in the East coast. Towards

:25:45. > :25:53.lunch time, plenty of warm sunshine and blue skies. By mid-afternoon,
