:00:08. > :00:11.The Queen has opened the 20th Commonwealth Games.

:00:12. > :00:14.40,000 people were at Celtic Park in Glasgow to watch a colourful

:00:15. > :00:18.spectacle which was in turn coothie and quirky, fun and fund-raising.

:00:19. > :00:20.It featured superstars and Scottie dogs, teacakes,

:00:21. > :00:24.and an appeal to raise money for the children of the Commonwealth.

:00:25. > :00:27.There was a huge roar from the crowd when Team Scotland

:00:28. > :00:42.Everybody that came to Celtic Park tonight was promised a spectacle, as

:00:43. > :00:49.rebels watching throughout the world. -- as were those. Opinion on

:00:50. > :00:57.social media divided, some loving it, some heating it. There has been

:00:58. > :01:03.some concerns that the England team would be booed, but they got a big

:01:04. > :01:12.cheer. Nothing dull compared to the cheer given to the Scottish team. --

:01:13. > :01:17.nothing however. It started with a tongue in cheek

:01:18. > :01:23.exclusion of all things Scottish. A jumble of emblems and symbols, some

:01:24. > :01:32.of our best loved figures welcoming the world to Glasgow. There was

:01:33. > :01:47.music, Rod Stewart here at his beloved Celtic Park. And Susan

:01:48. > :02:06.Boyle. Before a majestic welcome for the Queen. And the Red Arrows

:02:07. > :02:18.treating a boil -- blazing a trail across the city. And a rendition of

:02:19. > :02:22.the national anthem. The 40,000 people at Celtic Park did not miss a

:02:23. > :02:37.moment, thanks to the biggest weight screen ever seen in Europe will stop

:02:38. > :02:44.-- widescreen. I cheer for the England team and the largest ever

:02:45. > :02:52.Scottish team, wearing those outfits that have caused so much discussion,

:02:53. > :02:55.carrying the hopes of a nation. 71 nations and territories coming

:02:56. > :03:03.together, each led on by a Scottie dog. The Malaysian team wore black

:03:04. > :03:07.armbands in memory of those killed in last week's disaster and the

:03:08. > :03:11.First Minister wait a minute's silence to remember the victims of

:03:12. > :03:16.the tragedy. He then welcomed the world to Scotland and Glasgow. So,

:03:17. > :03:24.from the people of Scotland, let us a firm the most important message of

:03:25. > :03:29.all, welcome to the Commonwealth of Nations, welcome to Scotland. The

:03:30. > :03:38.ceremony did have its political moments. Here's to a quality in

:03:39. > :03:47.Scotland! And the organisers used to make's events to promote and raise

:03:48. > :03:50.funds for their charity, Unicef. And the finale, the Queen's Baton Relay

:03:51. > :03:56.finished its epic journey of more than 100 days in males, coming home

:03:57. > :04:03.to Glasgow carried by Sir Chris Hoy. After a little struggle, the

:04:04. > :04:09.Queen's message was brought out. And now the baton has arrived here in

:04:10. > :04:13.Glasgow, a city renowned for its dynamic cultural and sporting

:04:14. > :04:32.achievements. And for the warmth of its people, for this opening

:04:33. > :04:38.ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. It was over to one half hours long,

:04:39. > :04:45.a lot to take in. How did it go down with the crowd? It did overrun. Lots

:04:46. > :04:56.of people took to social media. Whilst some people thought it was

:04:57. > :05:01.twee, it mainly got a big thumbs up. It was absolutely terrific. Much

:05:02. > :05:05.better than I thought that I would be. I had real fear is that we would

:05:06. > :05:10.embarrass ourselves tonight. The music was brilliant. Some of the

:05:11. > :05:15.teams that were coming in or dancing, and atmosphere were really

:05:16. > :05:21.good. Favourite moments where Sir Chris Hoy trying to get the message

:05:22. > :05:27.out of pattern. You cannot explain the apps, it was fantastic. William.

:05:28. > :05:38.What made it so special? Win-mac everything. So tomorrow it is all

:05:39. > :05:43.about the sport, the first medals of the games will come in the

:05:44. > :05:48.triathlon. But for Scottish athletes there is plenty of interest at the

:05:49. > :05:53.velodrome and at the swimming pool. We are looking for some medals

:05:54. > :05:56.hopefully from Hannah Miley and Michael Jamieson.

:05:57. > :05:59.The journey to this Opening Ceremony began ten years ago when Glasgow

:06:00. > :06:01.beat Edinburgh to be named as Scotland's candidate city

:06:02. > :06:04.Here's a quick recap of how we got here.

:06:05. > :06:11.The Commonwealth Games were coming to Glasgow. Hosting it would be a

:06:12. > :06:17.fantastic opportunity for a Glasgow and all of Scotland. Is this going

:06:18. > :06:38.to be Scottish swimming history? She has done it! The host for the 2014

:06:39. > :06:43.Commonwealth Games will be Glasgow. I call upon the sports men and

:06:44. > :06:45.sportswomen of the Commonwealth to assemble in four years time in

:06:46. > :07:20.Glasgow, Scotland. In other news, four members

:07:21. > :07:23.of a family from West Lothian have been killed in a head-on collision

:07:24. > :07:26.on the outskirts of Falkirk. A man, woman and

:07:27. > :07:28.their two young daughters died when Morag Kinniburgh has been

:07:29. > :07:39.at the scene. The family who died are from West

:07:40. > :07:44.Lothian. A couple in their 20s and their two little girls aged less

:07:45. > :07:51.than three years old. They were all killed when their car collided with

:07:52. > :07:54.a truck on their A801 this afternoon. The lorry driver was not

:07:55. > :07:59.injured and will be helping the police with the investigation. The

:08:00. > :08:07.vocal people say that this main road connecting the Mnumeric and nine at

:08:08. > :08:12.Falkirk -- connecting Falkirk in Bathgate is an accident like sport.

:08:13. > :08:27.But they say there has never been an accident as awful as this.

:08:28. > :08:35.Staying dry to make, but the harder will return. Across the West End and

:08:36. > :08:39.particularly the south-west, look at these temperatures that EDM, up

:08:40. > :08:43.towards the high teens. Some thick cloud for part of the Borders, into

:08:44. > :08:56.the audience, Edinburgh, Fife, Angus. Some haar hugging the coast

:08:57. > :09:00.line. As we head through the morning towards lunch time a lot of that

:09:01. > :09:05.cloud and low cloud bringing back towards the East Coast. For most of

:09:06. > :09:09.us, bright, sunny and warm. A mid-afternoon, temperatures up to

:09:10. > :09:15.around high 20s. We could see 21 degrees. Cooler for Shetland. For

:09:16. > :09:19.the first few days of competition, it is not looking too bad at all.

:09:20. > :09:25.There is change on the week on Saturday.

:09:26. > :09:29.Thank you. The action starts for real tomorrow morning. You can watch

:09:30. > :09:31.all of the Commonwealth action here on the BBC. Good night.

:09:32. > :09:41.from the north. The national picture comes from Philip Avery.

:09:42. > :09:43.Unusually, I can say good morning. Wednesday has been noticeable for
