:00:00. > :00:12.And just halfway through the games, Team Scotland are already record

:00:13. > :00:23.The bowlers Alex Marshall and Paul Foster beat Malaysia to win

:00:24. > :00:29.Scotland's 12th gold medal, our best ever tally.

:00:30. > :00:31.We'll also be joined by the team who've been planning

:00:32. > :00:34.this huge medal haul for years, and ask them what it all means

:00:35. > :00:45.I'll be talking live to the Shetland schoolgirl making a big splash

:00:46. > :00:51.As the athletics swing into action here at Hampden,

:00:52. > :00:57.we'll hear from a man who did it all before - over 40 years ago.

:00:58. > :01:01.How you can bid for the now-famous props used

:01:02. > :01:22.Good evening from Hampden Park, which was the biggest

:01:23. > :01:27.in the world when it opened more than 100 years ago.

:01:28. > :01:30.When the action gets underway in a short while it might just be

:01:31. > :01:37.It's official, it's Scotland's golden games.

:01:38. > :01:41.A few hours ago bowlers Paul Foster and Alex Marshall beat Malaysia to

:01:42. > :01:44.pick up Scotland's record breaking twelfth gold medal.

:01:45. > :01:54.Overall, Team Scotland now has a total of 31 medals,

:01:55. > :01:56.- 32, just more than our Commonwealth best showing, at

:01:57. > :02:04.Edinburgh in 1986. But first, forget Golden Balls, it's Golden bowls.

:02:05. > :02:08.Let's to go Rhona McLeod at Kelvingrove.

:02:09. > :02:12.Yes, this is where the historic 12th gold medal came.

:02:13. > :02:20.Paul Foster and Alex Marshall absolutely dominated their Malaysian

:02:21. > :02:28.For Marshall it was his third Games medal and he says the best ever

:02:29. > :02:32.It was the perfect day out in the sun also for the thousands

:02:33. > :02:43.of Scottish bowls fans who turned out from near and far to watch.

:02:44. > :02:58.THEY SING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM The 12 rendition for a historic

:02:59. > :03:01.record-breaking 12 gold medal. A glittering performance of bowls at

:03:02. > :03:09.their best as they charged to a 20-3 victory. COMMENTATOR:

:03:10. > :03:14.their best as they charged to a 20-3 run-through. They've got at! And

:03:15. > :03:21.they've done it again. Second time the cold for Paul Foster, third for

:03:22. > :03:28.Alex Marshall. It is a fantastic, fantastic way. Obviously winning

:03:29. > :03:35.with the best player in the world, the productive fantastic display and

:03:36. > :03:43.made it easier for me. He did a great job. Versus team Scotland's 12

:03:44. > :03:48.medal, do you know that is historic? They are we now understand

:03:49. > :03:52.that as the record, which is fantastic for team Scotland and all

:03:53. > :04:01.these boards involved in it. We are very proud of it. Alex, this is your

:04:02. > :04:09.third gold medal. This tops the other two. Winning it all in your

:04:10. > :04:14.home country, on your home court, you cannot beat it. Which made for

:04:15. > :04:18.the thousands of Scots bowls finds, it was a powerful advert for the

:04:19. > :04:25.game. It is fantastic to see the guys, we would the middle. It brings

:04:26. > :04:28.such powerful atmosphere. I hope it brings a lot because we are trying

:04:29. > :04:33.to encourage young people to comment on this board and I think if they

:04:34. > :04:38.see how they have got on today, that should encourage anybody. They

:04:39. > :04:46.played brilliant, deserved it. Well done, boys. Well done, Scotland.

:04:47. > :05:07.Bowls finds young and old are united. Fans. More medals are more

:05:08. > :05:11.likely. The bowls continue on Wednesday so I would hazard a bit

:05:12. > :05:15.that there are more still to come. Thank you very much.

:05:16. > :05:18.This place may be famous for its roar, which hopefully we'll hear

:05:19. > :05:22.when Libby Clegg takes to the track just after 8pm, but last night they

:05:23. > :05:24.nearly took the roof off Tollcross swimming pool when 13-year-old

:05:25. > :05:25.Erraid Davies from Shetland became Scotland's

:05:26. > :05:43.So much attention on this young girl, just 13 years old. She did not

:05:44. > :05:48.even tell your friends she was competing in the Commonwealth Games.

:05:49. > :05:56.Last night, as the crowd went crazy, she's won the race of her life and

:05:57. > :05:58.instantly became a star. Beaming the broadest smiles as she climbed out

:05:59. > :06:09.of the swimming pool, winning bronze. I was just really happy. I

:06:10. > :06:14.really wanted to get it! This, would you believe it, is where she trains.

:06:15. > :06:21.A swimming pool on the 60 metres long. It is an achievement for

:06:22. > :06:25.Shetland and the swimming pool. We might be a small community but we

:06:26. > :06:31.can do what everyone else can. It is a 50 mile round trip from her home.

:06:32. > :06:34.She has named training sessions per week. Very proud and excited last

:06:35. > :06:40.night. I was shouting at the television. She looked at one of her

:06:41. > :06:44.opponents so I told her off. So proud. A moment that delighted the

:06:45. > :06:46.crowds and will be favoured by Scotland's and this ever competitor

:06:47. > :06:50.in a Commonwealth Games. And bronze medal winning

:06:51. > :06:52.Erraid and her proud parents What a day you have had!

:06:53. > :07:03.think back to last night, all What a day you have had!

:07:04. > :07:10.hours ago? What was going through your mind when you stood up there?

:07:11. > :07:13.hours ago? What was going through was really nervous but excited and

:07:14. > :07:19.wanting to go for it. And when you touched the wall, did you realise

:07:20. > :07:24.what a great swimming at night? Not really, not until I looked at the

:07:25. > :07:30.board. It took a while to figure it out but once I saw my time, I was

:07:31. > :07:37.really happy. And it was a personal best! Joyce, David, she has put you

:07:38. > :07:42.through the emotional ringer. I know you're proud but what a 24 hours! It

:07:43. > :07:47.has been incredible. We are full of excitement and celebration. She has

:07:48. > :07:52.made us be progress parents. Those are the words that you said and that

:07:53. > :08:00.is what we are. -- the proudest parents. Could you there to watch?

:08:01. > :08:04.Just about. It was difficult but because she was behind Abbey split,

:08:05. > :08:11.I thought she needed a lot of encouragement and so along with the

:08:12. > :08:17.rest, I got behind and shouted shouted and then she made it. -- she

:08:18. > :08:22.was behind at the split. Can you remember anything from today? What

:08:23. > :08:29.has been the most interesting or exciting moment? Seeing all of the

:08:30. > :08:34.BBC studios. You have seen quite a few today! She began swimming

:08:35. > :08:38.because she had a hip condition, something that was a very come at a

:08:39. > :08:48.time. Who would have thought so much joy could have come out of it? Yes,

:08:49. > :08:50.she was only three years old when she was diagnosed with the condition

:08:51. > :08:55.and swimming was the only activity she was allowed to go, because she

:08:56. > :08:59.was not allowed to walk, it was too painful. Being in the water and

:09:00. > :09:04.being able to be pain-free and walk around and have fine as a

:09:05. > :09:10.four-year-old is the way it all began. And I am told that you always

:09:11. > :09:12.enjoy your training sessions and never do not go. There must be

:09:13. > :09:20.something very special about the water. Especially the further north

:09:21. > :09:24.you go. She trains in a very small pool. I think it is just

:09:25. > :09:28.determination and the fact that she has got a very good coach, who has

:09:29. > :09:35.really nurtured her and brought her on. Without Laraine I do not think

:09:36. > :09:38.that she would be where she is now. We wish you all the best. You have

:09:39. > :09:45.given a nation much enjoyment. For you, I think you have got another

:09:46. > :09:47.competition and then back to school! Thank you for joining us.

:09:48. > :09:49.Scotland's swimmers are certainly riding the crest of those waves

:09:50. > :09:53.And there are more chances of a place in the podium this evening.

:09:54. > :09:56.In fact, potentially more than one, as there are three Scottish swimmers

:09:57. > :09:58.in the 50 metre breast stroke final, including Ross Murdoch.

:09:59. > :10:12.After the excitement of last night we will have to hope that the crowd

:10:13. > :10:17.will be in great voices evening. We have 11 Scottish competitors in

:10:18. > :10:20.events tonight. Hannah Miley will have two events this evening with

:10:21. > :10:24.more tomorrow. I think the biggest cheer for the evening will be

:10:25. > :10:32.reserved for Ross and his two team-mates. Ross is rapidly turning

:10:33. > :10:37.into the golden boy of these games, with a gold and a silver already.

:10:38. > :10:43.What more can he deliver tonight? Let's hope it will be a medal for

:10:44. > :10:47.one of those boys. The timing of that event is 8:49pm and it will be

:10:48. > :11:01.over in 30 seconds so make sure that you do not forget to tune in.

:11:02. > :11:06.Across the Clyde, at the SEC see, -- across the Clyde, there is a

:11:07. > :11:08.between gymnasts who're usually teammates at the Olympics but find

:11:09. > :11:11.themselves in direct competition for gold in the men's team final.

:11:12. > :11:13.Let's get the latest from Jane Lewis.

:11:14. > :11:19.battle royale ongoing yes, this has been the centre point for the

:11:20. > :11:24.main's gymnastics. It has finished for the day and Scotland are lying

:11:25. > :11:29.in a silver medal position. England are in front, with that battle as he

:11:30. > :11:34.said. Canada are lying in third spot. As I say, three apparatus in,

:11:35. > :11:41.Scotland are in the silver medal position. That is great news. Let's

:11:42. > :11:44.get a bit more take on this from a man who knows a thing or two about

:11:45. > :11:51.winning a Commonwealth gymnastics medal. Scotland in silver position.

:11:52. > :11:56.Can they stay there or close that gap? I believe they can. We are at a

:11:57. > :12:00.great stage. Three apparatus has gone and we have got a three to go.

:12:01. > :12:04.We are going to reshuffle overnight and tomorrow we have our final

:12:05. > :12:08.three. We are strong on the kids to come and I think we can do even

:12:09. > :12:12.better and hopefully narrow the gap a bit between us and England in

:12:13. > :12:16.gymnastics. It is quite interesting because some

:12:17. > :12:21.of the people are part of team GB and now up against their team-mates

:12:22. > :12:31.performing for England. How do they look in the Scotland colours to you?

:12:32. > :12:34.They got off to a shaky start on the horrors at our getting into the

:12:35. > :12:41.swing of it. Tomorrow is the new gene. They are in a great position.

:12:42. > :12:48.-- on the course. Hopefully, tomorrow, fingers crossed, as these

:12:49. > :12:52.boys can do, we will be on that podium and it could be a silver, it

:12:53. > :12:58.could be a bronze... It could be a gold. Let's keep our fingers

:12:59. > :13:03.crossed. The women's event is about to get underway. As Steve says, the

:13:04. > :13:07.men are back in action tomorrow morning. We will keep our fingers

:13:08. > :13:13.crossed because if they do win a medal, it will be history in the

:13:14. > :13:22.making. Men's gymnastic teams for Scotland have never won a medal at

:13:23. > :13:23.the Commonwealth Games. As you can see, the stadium is

:13:24. > :13:26.filling up. No wonder. Up at the Barry Buddon centre

:13:27. > :13:29.near Carnoustie, spectators took a battering,

:13:30. > :13:32.and the rain was so bad it washed Let's see how our competitors got

:13:33. > :13:48.on from Heather Dewar. She came away with three

:13:49. > :13:55.Commonwealth Games medals last time and now has another. The 23-year-old

:13:56. > :14:00.Scot unable to defend her title in 2014 but bringing home a bronze and

:14:01. > :14:03.delighted just to medal. I am slightly disappointed I did not

:14:04. > :14:07.defend my title but it was a great performance and I am glad to get a

:14:08. > :14:14.medal and just happy that it is all done! No such luck for John Hammond,

:14:15. > :14:20.who failed to even qualify for the event where he won gold for years

:14:21. > :14:25.ago. Among the other Scottish people, Sean Marshall failed to

:14:26. > :14:26.qualify for the women's and now retires from international

:14:27. > :14:36.competition. Out of the two big hopes for medals today, we have come

:14:37. > :14:40.away with one, a bronze medal in the 50 metres. John Hammond disappointed

:14:41. > :14:45.not to qualify for the final in the event but we do

:14:46. > :14:46.not to qualify for the final in the And confidence is still high that

:14:47. > :14:49.Scotland can bring home another medal.

:14:50. > :14:53.Scotland can bring home another we will be hopeful of doing

:14:54. > :14:58.something there. We are where we are and we are pretty much on track with

:14:59. > :15:01.what we hoped we might get. We would always liked more, of course! For

:15:02. > :15:03.Scotland! As you know, Scotland's national

:15:04. > :15:05.football stadium has undergone a transformation to become this

:15:06. > :15:08.world class athletics track. This evening we're expecting a

:15:09. > :15:13.capacity crowd of 44,000 spectators. Our sportsmen and women have

:15:14. > :15:16.delivered, hitting that new record -- 12 gold medals. But how is this

:15:17. > :15:43.interest in sport sustained and I'm joined by the Chief Executive

:15:44. > :15:51.of Sportscotland, Stuart Harris. It is fantastic. The athletes have

:15:52. > :15:58.worked for years and we are moving past our target on day five. A

:15:59. > :16:01.worked for years and we are moving match. You're responsible for

:16:02. > :16:05.drawing up the schedule of events. Did you arrange it to get out

:16:06. > :16:10.drawing up the schedule of events. a flying start? ! Zero were other

:16:11. > :16:13.people there at the same time but we did look at the programming and it

:16:14. > :16:18.is good that the home team does well and they get off to a bank. Leeds

:16:19. > :16:23.who succeeded, what ever daily put the programme on, or they would have

:16:24. > :16:27.done the same thing. Stewart Harris, while being very pleased at what we

:16:28. > :16:33.have achieved so far, there are some people who say that tens of millions

:16:34. > :16:35.of pounds have been spent on the games and that spending money on

:16:36. > :16:41.elite athletes might not be money best spent. We are very proud of

:16:42. > :16:48.Teen Scotland and what they have done but we have also committed

:16:49. > :16:52.money forward to 2019, given money to schools and have been working

:16:53. > :16:57.within communities, bringing people together in communities to deliver

:16:58. > :17:00.sport and look after themselves. It has been fantastic. And the Queen's

:17:01. > :17:08.Baton really connected all those communities. We believe we have got

:17:09. > :17:12.a world-class system at school, love and performance -- School, club and

:17:13. > :17:19.performance level. So you are saying that you're happy that the teaching

:17:20. > :17:22.is there? It is getting better. The Government has committed to two

:17:23. > :17:25.hours. We have active schools in place for ten years, allowing young

:17:26. > :17:30.people to get involved in recreation, for fun, to be with her

:17:31. > :17:35.friends and for those who want to be competitive to be competitive. We

:17:36. > :17:37.think we have got a really good, balanced programme for as many young

:17:38. > :17:43.people in Scotland to get involved. John, half way through the athletes

:17:44. > :17:50.have done us proud. What are you hoping for in terms of more cold

:17:51. > :17:55.medals? We are getting greedy! Hopefully the middle so, about the

:17:56. > :17:59.performance. You cannot do anything about the other competitors but we

:18:00. > :18:02.have got some good sports coming up. We have got some fantastic,

:18:03. > :18:07.world-class performance. Athletics is just started and some great

:18:08. > :18:13.performances earlier today. We have still got seven boxers in at this

:18:14. > :18:15.stage going to the final stage of competition. Lots more to watch and

:18:16. > :18:16.hope for. Join us at Hampden in a few moments,

:18:17. > :18:20.when we'll be hearing from a man who got Scotland

:18:21. > :18:23.off to an unforgettable start While you ponder that one,

:18:24. > :18:27.it's back to Sally in the studio A 23-year-old man has appeared

:18:28. > :18:32.in court in Edinburgh, following an alleged attack on an

:18:33. > :18:36.85-year-old woman in her Morningside Robert Buczek is charged with

:18:37. > :18:41.assault and attempted murder. Julie Peacock was at the

:18:42. > :18:53.Sheriff Court. It is no more than two weeks since

:18:54. > :18:59.this quiet morning side street became the scene of a brutal attack

:19:00. > :19:03.on an 85-year-old woman. That it could happen here has shocked at

:19:04. > :19:07.this community. Not least because the woman was attacked in her own

:19:08. > :19:10.home in the middle of the afternoon. Her husband had left her alone for

:19:11. > :19:15.only a couple of hours to go shopping on a Friday afternoon. When

:19:16. > :19:20.he returned, he found his wife with life-threatening injuries. Police

:19:21. > :19:24.say the pensioner is still in a serious but stable condition. An

:19:25. > :19:29.extensive investigation over the last two weeks has seen more than

:19:30. > :19:34.1000 drivers and passers-by questioned to see whether anybody so

:19:35. > :19:39.anything unusual on that evening. Today, a 23-year-old man appeared

:19:40. > :19:44.here at the court charged with attempted murder. He made no plea or

:19:45. > :19:45.declaration and was remanded in custody until his next court

:19:46. > :19:49.appearance on the 5th of August. The Scottish Fire and Rescue service

:19:50. > :19:51.is facing trial, accused of health and safety breaches

:19:52. > :19:54.following the death of a firefighter Ewan Williamson died in July 2009,

:19:55. > :19:57.after he became trapped while tackling a blaze in a bar

:19:58. > :20:00.on Dalry Road. The Fire and Rescue Service deny

:20:01. > :20:03.three charges under the Health and Safety at Work Act,

:20:04. > :20:06.including a failure to prioritise A further hearing is scheduled

:20:07. > :20:21.for September. A murder enquiry is underway after

:20:22. > :20:24.a man was found seriously injured 23-year-old Stephen McGowan was

:20:25. > :20:27.pronounced dead at the scene Police are trying to piece together

:20:28. > :20:31.the victim's last movements. The organisers of the

:20:32. > :20:36.Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo have been giving details of

:20:37. > :20:40.the line-up for this year's event. Steel drummers from Trinidad

:20:41. > :20:43.and Tobago are among those taking part at the annual event

:20:44. > :20:46.on the Castle Esplanade. The programme will mark the 350th

:20:47. > :20:50.anniversary of the Royal Marines and the centenary of World War One,

:20:51. > :20:59.which started on August 4th. Over the next few days it's hoped

:21:00. > :21:07.that Scots like Eilidh Child, Libby Clegg and Lyndsey Sharp will

:21:08. > :21:15.achieve success on this track. If they do, they'll be following in

:21:16. > :21:21.the footsteps of a man whose gutsy gold medal-winning run made his name

:21:22. > :21:23.synonymous with the Commonwealth No doubt he's been telling

:21:24. > :21:42.Aileen Clark a few stories. You are quite right there. I am

:21:43. > :21:45.sitting here with the man who won gold in the 1970 Commonwealth Games.

:21:46. > :21:50.He tells me that was the first final on the first day of those games.

:21:51. > :22:02.Talk about getting Scotland off to a flying start. He is of. Tell us

:22:03. > :22:07.about that. You had played the race well. The Australian was in front of

:22:08. > :22:15.you. How did you win it? It was fantastic. I had never been beaten

:22:16. > :22:19.over the last 100 metres of a race. I had done a good time in the

:22:20. > :22:24.Scottish Championships a few weeks earlier and I thought I had a good

:22:25. > :22:28.chance of a medal. My plan was that if anybody goes at half way, I will

:22:29. > :22:33.go with them and just hanging. Because Clark and Taylor were at the

:22:34. > :22:38.tape to grind you into the ground. But by the time you cross the finish

:22:39. > :22:44.line, how much I view cart of your personal best? 20 seconds. And what

:22:45. > :22:50.was it like when you go the gold around your neck and had the crowd

:22:51. > :22:54.roaring? Unimaginable. It is one of those things. You could not really

:22:55. > :22:58.explain it other than you were only high and it is only when you go at

:22:59. > :23:06.home at night and are lying in bed and your mind goes back and, "what

:23:07. > :23:21.what have I done?" And I am sure both Murdoch will be feeling the

:23:22. > :23:24.same. -- Tim three, -- Ross. How did you train? Speak I worked in the

:23:25. > :23:29.dental hospital at the time and before I went in in the mornings, I

:23:30. > :23:33.went for a morning run before work and then I had a run in the evening

:23:34. > :23:38.when I came back. I changed the partners in March 1970 and then I

:23:39. > :23:42.started running at lunch time. Clearly, that made a bit of a

:23:43. > :23:45.difference because you did not even have a coach! That was pretty

:23:46. > :23:49.difference because you did not even going. A gold and not even a coach.

:23:50. > :23:52.difference because you did not even Lachie Stewart will be watching the

:23:53. > :23:56.athletics with great interest from the comfort of his soul for this

:23:57. > :24:07.week! I am sure he will. Thank you very

:24:08. > :24:08.much. Fantastic man. Castor mind back

:24:09. > :24:15.much. Fantastic man. Castor mind those fantastic props. Some of them

:24:16. > :24:20.went under the hammer today. -- cast your mind back.

:24:21. > :24:30.It started as a madcap, tongue in cheek celebration of all things

:24:31. > :24:34.Scottish. And now, the tartan truck could be yours. This is the

:24:35. > :24:39.fantastic props that came out. It goes on at a starting bid of ?1. We

:24:40. > :24:41.would expect it to get a letter that beyond that but we are starting bid

:24:42. > :24:45.is wherever we can add a low figure beyond that but we are starting bid

:24:46. > :24:55.and seeing where people want to take it. In fact, all sorts of things are

:24:56. > :25:03.up for auction. As each sport ends, the props will, for field also. We

:25:04. > :25:11.up for auction. As each sport ends, do not plan to put the Forth Bridge.

:25:12. > :25:16.I quite fancy one of the sheep. I saw quite a few of them are going up

:25:17. > :25:17.for sale. What about the dancing teacakes header maybe for fancy

:25:18. > :25:27.dress! Even the chairs are teacakes header maybe for fancy

:25:28. > :25:32.auction. Let's take Yuji a secret location. In the warehouse, each

:25:33. > :25:34.item is being photographed, catalogued and put up for auction.

:25:35. > :25:40.Proceeds will catalogued and put up for auction.

:25:41. > :25:44.hosting the games. If you're getting married, what about bidding for

:25:45. > :25:50.this? We are in an Aladdin 's cave of all things Scottish. Of course,

:25:51. > :25:56.the thing that everybody still seems to be talking about, those dancing

:25:57. > :26:04.teacakes. A quick update. Bids for the first teacake to go on sale have

:26:05. > :26:15.already reached over ?1500. Let's get the weather now! Thank you

:26:16. > :26:19.very much. A very good evening. Behind me, you can see the city of

:26:20. > :26:24.Glasgow stretching away and you can just catch sight of where the open

:26:25. > :26:27.cycling event will take place tomorrow night. As far as this

:26:28. > :26:33.evening is concerned, some dry, sunny spells to end a balmy evening.

:26:34. > :26:37.We saw 22 Celsius across parts of eastern Scotland and it will stay on

:26:38. > :26:44.the Mall side tonight. We will start to see cloud thickening on the West

:26:45. > :26:49.Coast, producing the order spot of drivel. Tomorrow morning, it starts

:26:50. > :26:53.on a fairly cloudy note and also quite damp. Especially across

:26:54. > :26:56.western Scotland. That cloud will push across the country to eastern

:26:57. > :27:03.areas but any rain will tend to die away. By the time we have reached

:27:04. > :27:05.the afternoon, it is looking like a predominantly dry afternoon across

:27:06. > :27:10.the south and there will be brightness also, with some sunny

:27:11. > :27:14.spells. A fresh fail to tomorrow. One or two showers coming into the

:27:15. > :27:20.western coastal areas and the Northern Rail. Quite a breezy awful.

:27:21. > :27:26.Quite a breezy day in general for a good part of Scotland. -- the

:27:27. > :27:31.Northern Isles. In the best of the sunshine, highs of 21 Celsius. For

:27:32. > :27:36.the Commonwealth Games tomorrow, it doesn't start of predominantly dry.

:27:37. > :27:40.Also cloudy. It will brighten up during the afternoon but a fresher

:27:41. > :27:44.feel for the athletes taking part and also if you are watching!

:27:45. > :27:47.Tomorrow evening, we will see some showers across the West but they

:27:48. > :27:51.will continue to drive away over the evening. If we take a look at the

:27:52. > :27:58.pressure chart, you can see that the North of us there will be an area of

:27:59. > :28:03.low pressure, which will create some showers into Thursday. Keep an eye

:28:04. > :28:09.on that and we will bring you up to date tomorrow.

:28:10. > :28:12.They're up and running here at Hampden and plenty going

:28:13. > :28:15.on across the city as the weather again plays ball and Glasgow

:28:16. > :28:21.Coverage continues throughout the BBC.
