:00:17. > :00:22.Dan Keatings holds off a strong English challenge to

:00:23. > :00:31.We have got the highest scorers in the world at the moment so it

:00:32. > :00:32.We have got the highest scorers in to me but it could have gone to

:00:33. > :00:34.anyone of us. Added to a wrestling bronze,

:00:35. > :00:41.that means Scotland's medal tally is Over 40,000 fans will cheer

:00:42. > :00:59.on Scotland's poster girl I am a live at Hampden that we are

:01:00. > :01:01.in just a few minutes' time we will be talking to Eilidh Child' father

:01:02. > :01:02.and sister. The Glasgow kiss that got this

:01:03. > :01:05.medal-winning wrestler kicked out And in other news, an Israeli show

:01:06. > :01:09.at the Fringe has been cancelled because of demonstrations

:01:10. > :01:24.against the conflict in Gaza. Scotland has won another gold

:01:25. > :01:27.medal at the Commonwealth Games. The 24-year-old gymnast Dan Keatings

:01:28. > :01:30.produced a stunning routine in the He'd fought back from a series of

:01:31. > :01:35.injury setbacks to compete at his home Games, after missing out on

:01:36. > :01:55.selection for the London Olympics. COMMENTATOR: This is a lovely

:01:56. > :02:05.swinging start. Nice pick-up. Into the stretch bodies swaying. On one

:02:06. > :02:12.handle. Going for that special move. That is such a difficult one to

:02:13. > :02:20.control. I tell you, this is a great start. Spindle. Hands absolutely

:02:21. > :02:31.parallel. Very, very nice work indeed. Into another triple Russian.

:02:32. > :02:40.Big guns indeed here for Daniel. Travelling back. Keep the swing. Oh,

:02:41. > :02:45.that is huge! Daniel Keatings swinging Street, clean and keeping

:02:46. > :02:49.his rhythm. Daniel Keatings is through. Well, he has laid down the

:02:50. > :02:54.gauntlet. Well,

:02:55. > :03:08.let's go live to the Hydro arena, You have been watching the

:03:09. > :03:16.performance. Yes, I heard you earlier speaking of

:03:17. > :03:20.the Hampden roar about the police in the went absolutely berserk when

:03:21. > :03:25.Daniel Keatings took gold. What a pleasure it was to witness that and

:03:26. > :03:30.what a performance. He was still smiling when he dismounted the

:03:31. > :03:37.apparatus. No wonder. He had to defeat to Olympic medallists to

:03:38. > :03:42.claim gold and he was still smiling when I asked him how he was dealing

:03:43. > :03:47.a few minutes later. Over the moon. I cannot explain in words how I

:03:48. > :03:50.feel. It is amazing. The atmosphere was awesome and the cheer I got on

:03:51. > :03:55.the top of the podium was unbelievable. The whole crowd

:03:56. > :04:01.singing the National Anthem, I had such a sense of pride and joy. You

:04:02. > :04:05.were smiling before you left the apparatus. I have not seen that too

:04:06. > :04:13.often. At what point did you realise you had one gold? Not until Max's

:04:14. > :04:18.score came up. I was feeling a bit nervous as there were other

:04:19. > :04:24.competitors to go. Then Max, who has been on top form at these games. He

:04:25. > :04:28.did a really good routine and his start was a little better than mine

:04:29. > :04:31.so I did not know until his score. What a reaction from the home crowd

:04:32. > :04:39.after your apparatus and then on the podium. It was amazing. And the

:04:40. > :04:42.support, not just for myself but the Hall of Scotland for Scottish

:04:43. > :04:46.athletes, it is amazing and makes you feel so proud. This was the

:04:47. > :04:50.moment the home crowd had been waiting for. You have already

:04:51. > :04:55.treated them to two silvers and now the gold. I was hoping I would not

:04:56. > :05:02.get a third silver! I was hoping to fight for the gold but the talent of

:05:03. > :05:10.the others, I knew it would be hard. I am just happy that I went for my

:05:11. > :05:14.routine. David, what a performance that was from Daniel Keatings. You

:05:15. > :05:17.may recall he broke his back in Melbourne in 2006. He

:05:18. > :05:19.may recall he broke his back in Melbourne in 2006. He missed the

:05:20. > :05:27.Olympics in 2012 through injury. Here's years at these games with two

:05:28. > :05:29.silvers and now a gold. He is back in action tomorrow on the horizontal

:05:30. > :05:35.wires and I will hopefully be zero for that one. His team-mate Daniel

:05:36. > :05:39.Purvis is about to take to the apparatus. He will be taking part in

:05:40. > :05:43.the rings and another medal would do me! -- I will be easier to see it.

:05:44. > :05:45.Thousands of fans are gathering at Hampden Park in Glasgow

:05:46. > :05:48.for what should be one of the most exciting evenings

:05:49. > :05:52.Scotland's athletics team captain Eilidh Child is going for gold

:05:53. > :06:02.Let's cross straight to Hampden Park and our Games reporter Lisa Summers.

:06:03. > :06:09.It really is a big night here. She has very much in the face of

:06:10. > :06:15.athletics for these games and Eilidh Child goes tonight in the 400 metres

:06:16. > :06:22.hurdles final. She has been in great form but is not the favourite in

:06:23. > :06:26.this race. There are high hopes for a silver tonight. Can she deliver?

:06:27. > :06:31.COMMENTATOR: It is Scotland she is representing. Looking to get to the

:06:32. > :06:35.final. She is the golden girl of the games and the hopes of the nation

:06:36. > :06:45.are on her shoulders. It was a comfortable win in the heats. I

:06:46. > :06:50.started a bit into the last hurdle so you have to just go for it and

:06:51. > :06:58.then you can really only ease up at the last hurdle. Her main rival for

:06:59. > :07:03.gold run even faster. The 27-year-old no trains in Bath. She

:07:04. > :07:09.got a silver in India in 2010 and will be desperate to do better than

:07:10. > :07:11.that tonight. She is obviously the poster girl for athletics in a

:07:12. > :07:17.Commonwealth Games in her home country. She will feed off that

:07:18. > :07:23.enormously. The crowd are fantastic so she will feed off that but along

:07:24. > :07:27.with that comes pressure. There will be huge pressure on her. Eilidh

:07:28. > :07:31.Child Brockley bat on over the order. She is very much the female

:07:32. > :07:37.face of the games. What can she deliver? She has had a fantastic

:07:38. > :07:42.start. Every reason she has done she has been fantastic and committed and

:07:43. > :07:47.her mistakes and has been minimal and she has corrected them. I think

:07:48. > :07:52.she has a fantastic chance. The crowds at hand and have been raucous

:07:53. > :07:57.and tonight will be the biggest cheer of all as Eilidh Child steps

:07:58. > :08:04.onto the track. If she can secure a medal of any colour we will have the

:08:05. > :08:11.best medal haul since 1990. It is pretty noisy but will be loader

:08:12. > :08:17.later on. West Meon are her dad and sister. Ronnie, it is a big day. Our

:08:18. > :08:24.feeling? I have been a packet of near all day and it has just got

:08:25. > :08:29.worse. Have you talked to her today? I have not but we caught up after

:08:30. > :08:30.the heat on Tuesday and she was quite positive about everything,

:08:31. > :08:36.where it quite positive about everything,

:08:37. > :08:41.forward to tonight. You have got a big team with you today in your

:08:42. > :08:47.T-shirts. There are 14 of us. Myself, my wife, her two sisters,

:08:48. > :08:53.their husbands, her brother, his partner, their daughter and my

:08:54. > :09:02.nephew and niece and their partners have, from England. A huge crowd.

:09:03. > :09:06.You are a huge sporting family. The whole family slam and then many of

:09:07. > :09:11.you turned to athletics but you talked to hurdle. Yes, we went over

:09:12. > :09:16.some plastic barriers in the back garden so I like to be the one to

:09:17. > :09:21.claim that I taught her everything she knows! Well, you have done a

:09:22. > :09:25.good job so far. The races in a little while. Are you going to get

:09:26. > :09:29.your little while. Are you going to get

:09:30. > :09:33.or will you be too nervous? The closer it gets to the race, the more

:09:34. > :09:36.dinner, so we will be glad when it is over but we are so excited, proud

:09:37. > :09:42.of her and cannot is over but we are so excited, proud

:09:43. > :09:45.Thank you. The race is at 8:25pm. It is very loud and the biggest roar of

:09:46. > :10:12.the night will wrestling. It feels wonderful. I

:10:13. > :10:17.struggled with a previous injury and did not know if I could continue but

:10:18. > :10:22.the support of the crowd has really helped me. I do not know where I got

:10:23. > :10:25.the strength from but I did it. Well done to him.

:10:26. > :10:26.It's also been the first day of competition

:10:27. > :10:29.While Scotland's David Millar failed to repeat

:10:30. > :10:32.his Commonwealth gold triumph in Delhi, it didn't dampen the event

:10:33. > :10:34.for competitors, or spectators, who lined the time-trial route

:10:35. > :10:45.Jane Lewis joins us now from the route near Glasgow Green.

:10:46. > :10:53.David, that is the finish line and the point that all of the cyclists

:10:54. > :10:58.were aiming for today as they hit the road for the first time during

:10:59. > :11:03.this Commonwealth Games. It may be quiet at the moment but believe me,

:11:04. > :11:06.it was a very different story a couple of hours ago.

:11:07. > :11:13.Thousands of people gathered in Glasgow Green as the road time trial

:11:14. > :11:18.came to Town. Noise was the order of the day as the crowd played their

:11:19. > :11:24.part in the race against the clock. Loving the atmosphere. Glasgow has

:11:25. > :11:28.come alive. It is brilliant. We are from Canada and we went to the Isle

:11:29. > :11:34.of Man and then he for the games. Glasgow has put on a fabulous show.

:11:35. > :11:37.It is brilliant. This is another free event for spectators to enjoy

:11:38. > :11:43.and they are certainly doing that in huge numbers. Will the home cyclists

:11:44. > :11:47.be among the medals however? David Mellor, the big Scottish hope, was

:11:48. > :11:55.the last cyclist added. He knew what he had to do. Miller, the defending

:11:56. > :12:00.Commonwealth champion, was treated to tremendous support all around the

:12:01. > :12:05.course, all willing him on. But he had to settle for eighth place. It

:12:06. > :12:09.was incredible, like the Tour de France in Glasgow. The amount of

:12:10. > :12:14.people was phenomenal. You can still see it here but all of the flag.

:12:15. > :12:19.Once-in-a-lifetime experience. -- you can still see it here with all

:12:20. > :12:24.of the Scottish flag. Later, -- earlier, the women were in action.

:12:25. > :12:29.Katie Archibald the best of the Scots, with fifth place. I lost it

:12:30. > :12:33.in the flat which was not satisfying because I had so much coming down

:12:34. > :12:38.the final straight because I could have won a sprint but what good is

:12:39. > :12:43.that when you have been going slow? I was not quite honoured on the last

:12:44. > :12:49.ten kbytes something to work on. Plenty of respect, even without

:12:50. > :12:54.medals, with Miller now looking ahead to Sunday's Road race.

:12:55. > :13:00.Both David Mellor and Katie Archibald will be back on the Sterry

:13:01. > :13:03.Road on Sunday for that road raise and both suggesting to me that they

:13:04. > :13:09.believe they have a better chance on Sunday of doing something that

:13:10. > :13:11.needed today. -- will be back on these roads on Sunday for that road

:13:12. > :13:13.race. Meanwhile, over in Edinburgh

:13:14. > :13:15.at the Commonwealth Pool, a big name Tom Daley spent

:13:16. > :13:18.the afternoon practicing ahead He was joined by 14-year-old

:13:19. > :13:22.Matthew Dickson, the youngest member They'll compete

:13:23. > :13:25.in the men's 10 metres synchronised An Australian weightlifter who

:13:26. > :13:31.admitted head-butting another competitor in the Commonwealth Games

:13:32. > :13:34.village yesterday has been ordered 29-year-old Francois Etoundi

:13:35. > :13:54.assaulted a Welsh weightlifter There was a massive media presence

:13:55. > :14:01.at Glasgow Sheriff Court today. Australian crews have been here

:14:02. > :14:03.since early morning to see this man, 29-year-old weightlifter Francois

:14:04. > :14:07.Etoundi. He brought pride to Australia on Sunday when he won a

:14:08. > :14:11.bronze in the weightlifting 77 kilograms category. But he ended up

:14:12. > :14:15.spending last night in custody after he head-butted a fellow

:14:16. > :14:22.weightlifter, Gareth Evans, from the Welsh team. The assault happened at

:14:23. > :14:30.about 5:30am on Wednesday morning at the athletes' village. In court, it

:14:31. > :14:35.was said the two men had words after the Welshman's girlfriend had had to

:14:36. > :14:40.Francois Etoundi. In court, Francois Etoundi pleaded guilty to assault by

:14:41. > :14:46.head-butting and he broke Mister Evans' knows. He was ordered to pay

:14:47. > :14:50.Gareth ?400 in compensation and the Sheriff told him that he had chosen

:14:51. > :14:54.to bring the law of the playground to the Commonwealth Games athletes

:14:55. > :14:59.village and fall out with someone over a girl. Team Australia are

:15:00. > :15:04.disappointed in what has happened. It is wrong. That is part of our

:15:05. > :15:07.code of conduct. The behaviour to other people has to be exemplary.

:15:08. > :15:13.That is something we are very concerned about. A note was sent

:15:14. > :15:17.around the athletes today to remind them to be on their best behaviour

:15:18. > :15:21.at the Commonwealth Games. Francois Etoundi will now go back to

:15:22. > :15:29.Australia on the first available flight and he will not be allowed to

:15:30. > :15:32.take part in the closing ceremony. We are back with the Commonwealth

:15:33. > :15:34.Games later in the programme but first, the rest of the news.

:15:35. > :15:37.An Israeli show at the Edinburgh Fringe has been cancelled

:15:38. > :15:38.after only one performance because of pro-Palestinian demonstrations

:15:39. > :15:43."The City" has been the target of a cultural boycott campaign because

:15:44. > :15:48.the Jerusalem based company receives funding from the Israeli government.

:15:49. > :15:56.Our arts correspondent Pauline McLean reports.

:15:57. > :16:08.# I am fortunate's Phil... . # This young company from Jerusalem

:16:09. > :16:14.radio show has nothing to do with what is happening in Gaza. The

:16:15. > :16:22.Israel government does not find this, but for the sake of art. To

:16:23. > :16:30.boycott art is trying to stop freedom of expression. The

:16:31. > :16:34.protesters say it is a legitimate target for a cultural boy cat and

:16:35. > :16:39.yesterday staged a protest outside the first performance. I think there

:16:40. > :16:43.is a lot of similarities between this and apartheid in South Africa.

:16:44. > :16:47.It was accepted then that you could not separate the cultural elements

:16:48. > :16:52.of South Africa from the critical elements and I think it is the same

:16:53. > :16:55.now. As long as theatre groups and arts groups keep taking money from

:16:56. > :17:01.the Israeli government, they cannot pretend not to have a say.

:17:02. > :17:04.Individual Israeli groups that come over here to perform is none of our

:17:05. > :17:09.business. It is that they are sponsored by the Israeli government

:17:10. > :17:14.and on the posters it has the Israeli government on their posters.

:17:15. > :17:16.That is what we take issue with. # I still believe in yesterday... .

:17:17. > :17:22.# In the end, it was the venue pulled

:17:23. > :17:27.the plug after the protests disrupted a number of shows. They

:17:28. > :17:28.say that they hope to find a new location for the

:17:29. > :17:31.say that they hope to find a new to run until the end of August.

:17:32. > :17:33.Thousands of tax workers across Scotland were on strike today

:17:34. > :17:36.as part of a rolling dispute over job cuts and office closures.

:17:37. > :17:39.The walkout coincides with the deadline for tax credit renewals.

:17:40. > :17:42.The tax authority, the HMRC, has criticised the timing, saying

:17:43. > :17:48.They have extended the deadline until 6th August.

:17:49. > :17:51.Hundreds of jobs are expected to be created after Wick was chosen to be

:17:52. > :17:53.the service base for the construction of one of the

:17:54. > :17:59.The company building the Beatrice Windfarm say they'll use

:18:00. > :18:06.The windfarm is one of two planned for the Moray Firth.

:18:07. > :18:10.Scotland's two national parks are to receive around ?3 million from

:18:11. > :18:14.the Heritage Lottery fund to help restore their network of pathways.

:18:15. > :18:17.The Cairngorms, and Loch Lomond and Trossachs national parks,

:18:18. > :18:20.which attract close to 5.5 million visitors a year, have numerous

:18:21. > :18:28.The grant will help restore 41 upland routes.

:18:29. > :18:33.Football now and Celtic's manager Ronnie Daila says he's unbelievably

:18:34. > :18:37.disappointed after his team's four one defeat to LEGGIA Warsaw

:18:38. > :18:41.in the first leg of their latest Champions League qualifying match.

:18:42. > :18:43.Although he believes his team can still qualify for

:18:44. > :18:52.the group stage of the competition, he admits they got it wrong.

:18:53. > :19:01.They were losing their course this is my responsibility. I

:19:02. > :19:02.have been much clearer on what we expect but again, I think we started

:19:03. > :19:15.well. We have to find out what is happening when we have such a good

:19:16. > :19:22.start and suddenly everything opens up at us again. I think we have to

:19:23. > :19:26.find out together. But I have to take the responsibility for that.

:19:27. > :19:28.troops in the early years of the First World War.

:19:29. > :19:30.HM Factory Gretna was a game-changer, and now

:19:31. > :19:33.its role is being remembered in a new custom-built museum which opens

:19:34. > :19:38.It's called the Devil's Porridge, after an explosive paste

:19:39. > :19:41.which was mixed there, and it's been completed just

:19:42. > :19:58.Newspapers called it the Shell scandal. The British Army's chronic

:19:59. > :20:04.shortage of firepower on the Western front. The Government's response was

:20:05. > :20:09.to build this factory, truly a munitions super factory. So little

:20:10. > :20:15.is left that it is hard to imagine now that this was part of a factory

:20:16. > :20:20.that stretched nine miles. There were 30 miles of roads, 125 miles of

:20:21. > :20:27.real ways, 20,000 people coming to work here from all over Britain and

:20:28. > :20:31.its empire. During the First World War, it was the biggest munitions

:20:32. > :20:35.factory in the world. It helped to speed up the war effort and was the

:20:36. > :20:40.biggest raw materials factory in the country and made this new type of

:20:41. > :20:48.propellant. The workers were nearly all young women, the job to make a

:20:49. > :20:54.paste, a particularly nasty brew dubbed the Devil's Point. It was

:20:55. > :20:58.next with sulphuric acid, and nitroglycerin. It was very volatile

:20:59. > :21:05.and the women were not allowed any jewellery in case it caused a spark

:21:06. > :21:11.and let up. The work was dangerous and unpleasant but many girls find a

:21:12. > :21:20.rewarding after domestic service. They all worked... Jim's three

:21:21. > :21:24.adults were typical. Dangerous work, long-term hazard form chemicals but

:21:25. > :21:31.it earned them some money and they cleaned self-respect, which they did

:21:32. > :21:38.not have in domestic service. A new museum opened today to tell the

:21:39. > :21:42.factory's story and how the new towns of Gretna and others were

:21:43. > :21:47.built within less than a year to provide for the workers' needs. The

:21:48. > :21:51.total cost of ?9 million was four times over budget. But it may just

:21:52. > :21:54.have been priceless for the war effort.

:21:55. > :21:58.He was best known for his appearances on the Victoria Wood

:21:59. > :22:06.He was also a respected theatre director, working at His Majesty's

:22:07. > :22:12.theatre in Aberdeen and the Lyceum in Edinburgh.

:22:13. > :22:20.Kenny Ireland, who was 68, had been suffering from cancer.

:22:21. > :22:23.Let's return to the Commonwealth Games.

:22:24. > :22:25.One of the most joyous celebrations of the games so far,

:22:26. > :22:28.Viorel Etsko took bronze for Team Scotland

:22:29. > :22:34.Born in Moldova he was still a teenager when he came to Britain.

:22:35. > :22:38.He's been competing for Scotland, now since 2001.

:22:39. > :22:51.This is what you call a proper medal winning celebration. COMMENTATOR:

:22:52. > :22:58.That is not easy on a wrestling match, I can tell you! Today,

:22:59. > :23:02.Scotland's wrestling bronze medallist is famous. I feel like I

:23:03. > :23:07.know what it is like to be Usain Bolt. I get stopped every two metres

:23:08. > :23:12.to get a photograph or autograph. When I take pitches, the

:23:13. > :23:17.congratulated me. I am still living the dream and are trying to pinch
