:00:00. > :00:00.with each side blaming the other. That's all from the BBC

:00:00. > :00:00.Team Scotland's golden touch continues.

:00:00. > :00:14.An unparalleled performance from Dan Purvis secures a gold in gymnastics.

:00:15. > :00:23.Scotland's lawn-bowls team also took their second gold as they

:00:24. > :00:27.On tonight's Reporting Scotland, we'll be hearing

:00:28. > :00:30.from those winning athletes, and analysing what lies behind Team

:00:31. > :00:37.The fastest man in the world is expected to compete

:00:38. > :00:42.tonight - will Glasgow greet with him a Hampden roar?

:00:43. > :00:44.And it's spend, spend, spend - how the Commonwealth visitors are

:00:45. > :01:00.Very few of us are struggling at the moment, my wife has got the new

:01:01. > :01:04.television she wants and the children are fed. It has been three

:01:05. > :01:11.courses all week, you cannot beat it.

:01:12. > :01:14.Team Scotland are now assured of at least 50 medals at

:01:15. > :01:16.This afternoon, two golds, one each in the lawn bowls

:01:17. > :01:21.This afternoon, two golds, one each in the lawn bowls

:01:22. > :01:24.and gymnastics, has helped take the overall total to 46.

:01:25. > :01:28.But we have four more guaranteed over tonight and tomorrow.

:01:29. > :01:34.The gymnastics gold was won by Daniel Purvis,

:01:35. > :01:39.He won the parallel bars event in dramatic fashion.

:01:40. > :01:59.This difficulty will stand him in good stead if he can keep this

:02:00. > :02:14.rhythm going. Still the swing is pure. I tell you, this is very, very

:02:15. > :02:25.bid for a medal. Well done, Dan Purvis! What a superb performance.

:02:26. > :02:32.Our reporter is there now. There must have been quite an atmosphere

:02:33. > :02:38.there today. It was a brilliant atmosphere. The

:02:39. > :02:43.man himself joins us. Hold a pure gold medal. You have silver and

:02:44. > :02:50.bronze, now you have called from the Commonwealth Games. How did that

:02:51. > :02:55.feel? Fantastic. With the home crowd and all the support, to come away

:02:56. > :03:01.with three medals, it is fantastic. The trade have played their part in

:03:02. > :03:05.helping Team Scotland do so well. It has been fantastic. There have been

:03:06. > :03:08.some down moments in this competition and they have raised our

:03:09. > :03:15.spirits. It has been fantastic and I thank them for their support. It was

:03:16. > :03:19.amazing watching the Scottish team performed today. The margin of error

:03:20. > :03:24.is so small. What is going through your mind? You have to be very

:03:25. > :03:29.focused. It is difficult, you get one chance. The main thing for me

:03:30. > :03:38.was the team final. I had never had a team medal. Anything else had been

:03:39. > :03:42.a bonus. It is very nerve-wracking, but it was really down to the team

:03:43. > :03:48.and after that it has just been a fantastic experience. During the

:03:49. > :03:53.national anthem there was not a dry eye in the house. I was that for

:03:54. > :04:02.you? It was very emotional, I started to well up. Thank you very

:04:03. > :04:08.much. Well done to you. The final day of the gymnastics, no more

:04:09. > :04:11.gymnastics during 2014, gymnastics is gone but, I can tell you,

:04:12. > :04:13.certainly not forgotten. Thank you.

:04:14. > :04:16.And earlier in the day it was the Team Scotland lawn bowlers who

:04:17. > :04:20.It came this afternoon, when the men's fours beat England.

:04:21. > :04:35.The bouncy, bouncy celebration is usually the domain of footballers.

:04:36. > :04:40.And indeed Alex Marshall has been compared to one of the world's best.

:04:41. > :04:44.But this is what a long balls celebration looks like when you

:04:45. > :04:54.destroy England to win the gold medal. It was a complete team

:04:55. > :05:02.effort. England only had the upper hand in one point earlier in the

:05:03. > :05:10.match when they led. But the Kelvingrove Greens belonged to

:05:11. > :05:15.Scotland. David struggled at the first few ends. But Neil played

:05:16. > :05:20.brilliantly. Then David was back to normal. We were all fantastic and

:05:21. > :05:28.that is what you have got to do to win the medals. What a bunch of

:05:29. > :05:34.great guys we have got. Win we had a fantastic match against Australia.

:05:35. > :05:42.We all did our bit and that is why we are such great friends and the

:05:43. > :05:48.fantastic four. It was a second goal of the games for two the men.

:05:49. > :05:59.Scotland fans I know bedding in with the hope of a single success to win

:06:00. > :06:06.a golden day at the games. You mentioned another chance of gold

:06:07. > :06:13.beer, tell us about that. We are just beyond the halfway stage

:06:14. > :06:17.of the men's single matches. The policeman from Arbroath against a

:06:18. > :06:22.Canadian accountant. They are going well at the moment and I have to say

:06:23. > :06:29.that the Scot currently holds the lead at 13-7. But the comedian will

:06:30. > :06:36.not give up without a fight. It is the first medal possibility for the

:06:37. > :06:40.Scot, it will be gold, silver, or silver -- it will be gold or silver

:06:41. > :06:42.tonight. But we very much hope that it will be gold.

:06:43. > :06:45.At the boxing, it was going to be a successful day for Scotland whatever

:06:46. > :06:47.happened, with four fighters guaranteed at least a bronze.

:06:48. > :06:50.But as Phil Goodlad now reports, a golden day could now lie ahead

:06:51. > :07:04.Josh Taylor is a man on a mission at these Games. It can bring painful

:07:05. > :07:07.commonwealth memories flooding back for the Prestonpans fighter. Four

:07:08. > :07:13.years ago in Delhi he was tipped for gold, winning silver was a cheerful

:07:14. > :07:20.disappointment. Today was a chance to earn a shot at redemption. He was

:07:21. > :07:31.up against England's Salmon Maxwell. -- Sam Maxwell. We had been on Team

:07:32. > :07:43.GB together down in Sheffield, we spy with each other all the time.

:07:44. > :07:45.Everything we do is 100%. -- spar. Today the 19-year-old joiner from

:07:46. > :07:52.Motherwell was going to win a medal, but what colour? The judges

:07:53. > :08:05.decided that it would be bronze. I am absolutely gutted. But it was the

:08:06. > :08:15.first boxing medal for Scotland at these games. It is a bit of pressure

:08:16. > :08:20.and when the first one gets the bronze then you see, at least I will

:08:21. > :08:26.not be the one who is remembered for taking the team to their Games and

:08:27. > :08:34.getting nothing. But the day belonged to Josh Taylor and his

:08:35. > :08:53.noisy, if not sold chain for fans. -- not sold chain -- tuneful fans.

:08:54. > :09:00.THEY SING. The lightweights go into the ring in

:09:01. > :09:05.the next ten or 15 minutes. Then the local heavyweight will be making the

:09:06. > :09:13.ring walk. All guaranteed bronze, but all hoping to win the semifinal

:09:14. > :09:24.tonight to come back to the Hydro tomorrow.

:09:25. > :09:35.We have lost him, but we will look at the other medals.

:09:36. > :09:39.So Team Scotland are closing in on the fab 50, and by tomorrow we

:09:40. > :09:43.The current medal total is 46, with four more guaranteed -

:09:44. > :09:48.The total shatters the nation's previous record of 33,

:09:49. > :09:59.And with 16 golds so far, Scotland have surpassed their previous best

:10:00. > :10:04.gold total of 11, achieved eight years ago in Melbourne.

:10:05. > :10:06.And there's still a couple of days left.

:10:07. > :10:18.But does it mean that we as a nation are getting better at sport?

:10:19. > :10:24.I like to think so. The whole purpose of this exercise is to build

:10:25. > :10:28.a world-class system for Scotland, that is what we had a vision for

:10:29. > :10:34.seven years ago when we were awarded this Games in Glasgow. This was an

:10:35. > :10:36.opportunity to act as a catalyst for achieving something in a shorter

:10:37. > :10:44.space of time then you would normally and that is why you bed to

:10:45. > :10:47.host the Commonwealth Games. -- bid.

:10:48. > :10:50.If you judge success by the number of medals won, the biggest winners

:10:51. > :10:53.are cycling and gymnastics, with five apiece, swimming with ten,

:10:54. > :10:57.But in track and field Scotland have won just three medals so far,

:10:58. > :10:59.the only gold coming for Libby Clegg in the 100m

:11:00. > :11:05.So why are we performing so well in some sports and less well in others?

:11:06. > :11:12.A lot of medals have been won in judo, there has been a substantial

:11:13. > :11:21.investment in judo. It is targeted, the Commonwealth Games targets

:11:22. > :11:26.certain sports for medals. We all look to athletics, but in Scotland

:11:27. > :11:31.we have not perhaps invested as much as we should. This is a clinical

:11:32. > :11:34.operation, they put the money really think the medals will come from.

:11:35. > :11:37.The next big measure of how Scotland is performing will be

:11:38. > :11:40.in the Olympics in Rio in two years? time - a bigger stage,

:11:41. > :11:43.where the Americans, Chinese and Europeans all come to the table.

:11:44. > :11:46.It will be interesting to see how many Scots athletes can make it

:11:47. > :11:49.into Team GB and how many can win medals there.

:11:50. > :11:50.One of those athletes who added to that

:11:51. > :11:57.She says she was delighted by the reception she got from

:11:58. > :12:01.the 40,000-strong crowd when she took silver in the 400m hurdles.

:12:02. > :12:04.We'll be live at Hampden shortly, but first our Games reporter

:12:05. > :12:11.Lisa Summer reports on Child's memorable night.

:12:12. > :12:17.Today she is the focus of attention after winning a silver medal, but as

:12:18. > :12:23.the female face of the Commonwealth Games, the hopes of a nation where

:12:24. > :12:28.on her. Yesterday was a long day, waiting to race, every so often I

:12:29. > :12:33.would find myself nervous and then I would become again, so mixed

:12:34. > :12:37.emotions. The crowd was quiet and you could hear a pin drop as Ilie

:12:38. > :12:42.Childs took to the blocks. It was always going to be too much to ask

:12:43. > :12:53.for the face of the Games to win gold. Spencer was on excellent form.

:12:54. > :13:03.But it was thrilling to watch, and the reception at Hampden Park was

:13:04. > :13:06.just for a nominal. -- phenomenal. I am relieved, it has been a hard

:13:07. > :13:10.couple of days trying to keep myself focused. As soon as I crossed the

:13:11. > :13:24.line I could just let it all go and enjoy it. I am delighted that I got

:13:25. > :13:30.a medal. As a Heart of Midlothian fan she could not resist a little

:13:31. > :13:39.jibe at Hibs. They had spells or laughing that I

:13:40. > :13:51.had to do my lap of Bonner to that song. -- lap of honour to that song.

:13:52. > :13:58.Child will be back on track before the Games are over, running in the

:13:59. > :14:06.relay team with all of the fans cheering on.

:14:07. > :14:14.Let us join Weser at Hampden Park. There was a wonderful atmosphere

:14:15. > :14:22.last night, what is it like tonight? You can hear the heats for the 4x4

:14:23. > :14:27.hundred metres relay going on. If Scotland qualifies tonight then Ely

:14:28. > :14:39.child will run in the finals tomorrow. We have lots of Scottish

:14:40. > :14:44.interest. -- Ely child. -- Eilidh Child. We have lots of Scottish

:14:45. > :14:49.athletes running tonight. I be going to do it in the 400 metres relay?

:14:50. > :14:55.What should we expect from Scottish athletes this evening? Child had a

:14:56. > :15:00.fantastic reception, all of the Scots had. Particularly her medal,

:15:01. > :15:04.which is a third by Scottish athletes, it is the first time since

:15:05. > :15:10.1990 that they have won more than two medals, so that is fantastic. We

:15:11. > :15:17.have already had a qualifier tonight in the 1500 metres, we have Jack in

:15:18. > :15:23.the pole-vault, and if he jumps his best then he is in for a medal.

:15:24. > :15:30.Andrew is running in the 10,000 metres, he said that he would love

:15:31. > :15:38.to beat the record that was set in the Games in 1970. Whether he is in

:15:39. > :15:44.shape for it I do not know. He is going forth in that heat. The other

:15:45. > :15:48.big excitement today is of course Usain Bolt. He has been spotted in

:15:49. > :15:53.the warm up area for the athletes, looking very relaxed. What sort of

:15:54. > :15:57.reception do you think that he will get tonight at Hampden Park? I

:15:58. > :16:01.suppose it depends whether people believe that he was stitched up by a

:16:02. > :16:05.newspaper or whether he actually did see what he said. If they believe

:16:06. > :16:18.that he said what he said then he is in for a rough reception. The big

:16:19. > :16:24.thing tonight as Lindsay Sharp -- Lynsey Sharp in the 800 metres. She

:16:25. > :16:25.managed to qualify yesterday. Hopefully we may get another medal

:16:26. > :16:28.tonight. Now, for every winner at these Games

:16:29. > :16:31.there are many who are left And though a silver medal needn't be

:16:32. > :16:34.considered a failure, for the Scots swimmer Michael Jamieson it fell

:16:35. > :16:36.short of his, and much He's been reflecting

:16:37. > :16:46.on his performance, He was the focal point for Team

:16:47. > :16:52.Scotland's Commonwealth Games publicity drive. The ambassador,

:16:53. > :17:01.poster boy and hot favourite for a gold medal. As he swaggered towards

:17:02. > :17:08.the starting blocks, the stage was set for Michael Jamieson, but then

:17:09. > :17:13.the script went awry. Ross Murdoch is going to take the gold medal. Can

:17:14. > :17:18.you believe it? It is called to Scotland, but it is not the person

:17:19. > :17:21.that we thought. Michael Jamieson loses his British record and does

:17:22. > :17:29.not get the medal that he wanted. He has been all over the press and the

:17:30. > :17:36.build-up. He is devastated. Or all of their -- was all of the build-up

:17:37. > :17:41.and hate to blame? All of my life is built around this event. I have

:17:42. > :17:43.never missed any training or anything for commercial commitments.

:17:44. > :17:48.That is something that I pride myself on. The results come first

:17:49. > :17:57.from me and that is the most important thing for me. Only a

:17:58. > :18:01.world-class swim by Ross Murdoch deprived Michael Jamieson of the

:18:02. > :18:05.gold medal. But he has renewed determination. I have to believe

:18:06. > :18:12.that I can come back and win gold at the European Championships. Given

:18:13. > :18:17.the standard of this event, it'd get -- it is getting harder and harder

:18:18. > :18:22.to get into the top three, even into the top eight. I need to come back

:18:23. > :18:28.next year as a better athlete and use this experience to spur me on.

:18:29. > :18:43.Meikle Jamison's reign as the top Scot may have passed to the young

:18:44. > :18:45.pretender, but he may be able to come back.

:18:46. > :18:48.You won't be surprised to hear business around Glasgow is booming.

:18:49. > :18:50.Trade is far outstripping many people's expectations.

:18:51. > :18:52.Hotels are said to be between 200-300% busier than this

:18:53. > :18:54.One credit-card company says spending

:18:55. > :18:57.by overseas visitors is up by almost 40% over the last two weeks.

:18:58. > :19:00.Even Glasgow taxi companies say bookings are up by 20%.

:19:01. > :19:17.Glasgow 2014 has certainly brought with it a feel-good factor. More

:19:18. > :19:21.than 1 million people are estimated to have ventured into the city

:19:22. > :19:25.during these games and it certainly feels like it. Jews are forming

:19:26. > :19:35.everywhere, from tourist buses to taxis, it has been busy -- queues

:19:36. > :19:40.are forming. It has been three courses week, you cannot beat it.

:19:41. > :19:46.Danny's kids are not the only ones who need fed. The carnival and skier

:19:47. > :19:52.is helping to fill bars and restaurants. It is a Saturday day

:19:53. > :19:56.every day. Some places are up 25%. It depends where you are within the

:19:57. > :20:02.city area as well. Everybody has had a benefit, that benefit has changed

:20:03. > :20:09.depending on the area that you are in. Shops are also doing well, but

:20:10. > :20:14.the official merchandise shop in George Square is permanently busy.

:20:15. > :20:26.Clade is proving very popular, selling almost 50,000 -- Clyde.

:20:27. > :20:33.Including the hotel and the food and the tickets, about ?300. Including

:20:34. > :20:45.flights and travel, about ?2000. Up there with the pirate -- up there

:20:46. > :20:48.with the Olympics in London. It is clear to see that the economic

:20:49. > :20:50.impact has been massive. With today's still to go there is still

:20:51. > :20:56.plenty of time for spending. Now, on Sunday evening Jackie will

:20:57. > :20:59.be here with a special edition of Reporting Scotland -

:21:00. > :21:09."Glasgow's Golden Games". We have had our most successful

:21:10. > :21:14.Games ever, full of tears and triumph, and it is not over yet. The

:21:15. > :21:18.Commonwealth Games have not only been a feast of sport but they have

:21:19. > :21:22.showcased Glasgow and Scotland. The Sunday evening I will be joined by

:21:23. > :21:30.some of our star performance to look back on all the action. That is

:21:31. > :21:32.Scotland's Golden Games, this Sunday on BBC One Scotland.

:21:33. > :21:34.Now to other news, and the world's largest arts festival,

:21:35. > :21:37.This year's festival features more than 3,000 shows

:21:38. > :21:59.Thousands of performers from scores of nations gathered in one place to

:22:00. > :22:03.showcase their best. Sound familiar? But the Fringe is just a number of

:22:04. > :22:09.festivals that all pile into Edinburgh. My very first job was in

:22:10. > :22:23.Edinburgh festival, and in this very building, in the Assembly Hall. I

:22:24. > :22:29.Lay On The Steps Shouting. Pamela Stephenson produced this show after

:22:30. > :22:38.her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing. In those days, they were

:22:39. > :22:41.very few female comics. I do not think that there was another one.

:22:42. > :22:46.French and Saunders were starting, but I think that I was the only one

:22:47. > :22:51.standing up on stage by myself in Edinburgh. Somebody came back stage

:22:52. > :22:57.and told me, that is the most terrifying thing that I have ever

:22:58. > :23:03.seen. And she had some support on first tonight from her husband,

:23:04. > :23:11.Billy. A bit of dancing, hip shaking and swinging. I think that it will

:23:12. > :23:16.be nice. It better be nice, she has been missing for a month. They will

:23:17. > :23:19.be out here on the streets for three and a half weeks persuading

:23:20. > :23:24.audiences to come along. They are not worried about the challenge from

:23:25. > :23:29.the Games on this opening weekend, but they are looking forward to what

:23:30. > :23:32.is promising to be a record-breaking festival.

:23:33. > :23:35.A look now at other stories from the across the country.

:23:36. > :23:37.Aberdeen and Glasgow airports have been put up for sale.

:23:38. > :23:39.Their owner, Heathrow Airport Holdings, is hopeful of concluding

:23:40. > :23:44.The company was forced to sell three other sites, Edinburgh,

:23:45. > :23:47.Gatwick and Stansted, by the competition authorities.

:23:48. > :23:50.New legislation, which it is claimed will give greater protection to

:23:51. > :23:54.The changes require local authorities to carry out more

:23:55. > :23:56.rigorous consultations on all closures,

:23:57. > :24:04.A special tribute is being paid to Commonwealth Games gold-medal

:24:05. > :24:05.swimmer Hannah Miley in her home town.

:24:06. > :24:08.A model cow which has stood outside a dairy in

:24:09. > :24:19.Inverurie for several years has been repainted gold in honour of Hannah.

:24:20. > :24:27.Lots of people stand and have their photograph taken here, so we thought

:24:28. > :24:33.that if we painted her gold then Hannah Miley will perhaps have time

:24:34. > :24:35.to come back here and visit it and we will have a celebration with her.

:24:36. > :24:39.An animal charity is trying to trace the owner of a tarantula which crept

:24:40. > :24:43.A man spotted the spider while cleaning his kitchen

:24:44. > :24:46.The Scottish SPCA believes the Chilean rose tarantula may have

:24:47. > :24:57.Let's get the latest weather forecast now.

:24:58. > :25:05.It is looking a bit wetter than we have been used to, for the closing

:25:06. > :25:10.weekend of the Games. Not just for the Glasgow area, but across much of

:25:11. > :25:14.the country. Winds will be unusually strong for the start of August, but

:25:15. > :25:19.for this evening it is quite enough. Late sunshine for many of us, some

:25:20. > :25:24.rain will push into Orkney and Shetland, lingering in Shetland for

:25:25. > :25:27.much of the night and it will be heavy at times. Temperatures for

:25:28. > :25:32.most of us around 10 Celsius and there will be some mist and fog

:25:33. > :25:38.patches. This rain, just getting into the south by morning, we have a

:25:39. > :25:48.yellow warning from The Met office for dream right across the country.

:25:49. > :25:51.-- for rain. The region in the south -- the rain in the South will sleep

:25:52. > :25:57.northwards, it will be persistent and it will be heavy at times.

:25:58. > :26:02.Certainly a wet afternoon for the Glasgow area. It could turn lighter

:26:03. > :26:07.and patchy for Edinburgh and the Borders as the day goes on.

:26:08. > :26:12.Potentially difficult conditions on the roads and could even be some

:26:13. > :26:16.localised flooding in the heaviest of those downpours. It is really

:26:17. > :26:28.just the Northern and Western Isles and the far West holding onto those

:26:29. > :26:32.conditions. The cloud and rain edges northwards and across more southern

:26:33. > :26:38.ranges. There will be a bit of a wash-out for some tomorrow. Through

:26:39. > :26:41.the rest of the afternoon and evening tomorrow that rain hangs

:26:42. > :26:45.about, continuing to track northwards. Still heavy at times and

:26:46. > :26:52.still leading to potentially some difficult conditions on the roads.

:26:53. > :26:55.We head into the second half of the weekend. That weather front

:26:56. > :26:58.realigned itself slightly. The heaviest rain will be focused on the

:26:59. > :27:03.west, particularly the north-west Highlands, Argyll, Dumfries and

:27:04. > :27:09.Galloway, accompanied by strong winds, even touching deal force.

:27:10. > :27:12.There are signs that the rain will become lighter and patchy as the day

:27:13. > :27:16.goes on. Even some brightness getting through. There could well be

:27:17. > :27:20.some improvement for the Glasgow area. We are hopeful that by the

:27:21. > :27:26.start of the closing ceremony we could be all but dry. Into next

:27:27. > :27:29.week, already weekend rain tomorrow. Some improvement later on and then

:27:30. > :27:34.into next week there will be sunshine and showers. That is the

:27:35. > :27:38.forecast. The Commonwealth Games has produced

:27:39. > :27:41.some amazing images. No one likes to see a police officer coming at

:27:42. > :27:44.Cropper, but you make like to see this from the hockey venue at

:27:45. > :27:47.Glasgow Green.
