:00:36. > :00:52.by the local council. We have never asked for money or

:00:53. > :00:53.anything. We just feel that if they will be building new houses then

:00:54. > :00:56.they could put us into one of them. With just hours until

:00:57. > :01:00.the transfer deadline, it could be the first preseason where no club

:01:01. > :01:12.has spent money signing a player. Both sides in the independence

:01:13. > :01:15.referendum campaign are urging anyone who hasn't yet registered to

:01:16. > :01:19.vote to do so before it's too late. More than 4 million people

:01:20. > :01:21.here have already signed up. And with a high turnout

:01:22. > :01:23.and close result expected, Our political correspondent Tim Reid

:01:24. > :01:33.is here with more Just 17 days to go until polling

:01:34. > :01:39.day, although some voters have If you are to take part at all in

:01:40. > :01:44.this crucial vote on the nation's future and you haven't yet applied

:01:45. > :01:47.to do so, you must have registered by midnight tomorrow to be eligible,

:01:48. > :01:49.and most registration offices will be staffed and will let you hand in

:01:50. > :01:54.your form right up until that point. And if you have registered,

:01:55. > :01:57.or are going to apply to get a postal vote or a proxy vote -

:01:58. > :02:00.that's allowing someone else to vote for you - then that has to be

:02:01. > :02:16.done by 5pm on Wednesday. Very simple. Either contact your

:02:25. > :02:34.registration. Or go online, download the form and get it back to the

:02:35. > :02:37.electoral registration officer. This campaign is keen to find the

:02:38. > :02:42.so-called missing 1 million. Those who are eligible to take part, who

:02:43. > :02:48.do not usually do so, but who could swing this vote. We're making sure

:02:49. > :02:52.that people who may not have registered do register to vote in

:02:53. > :02:56.this very important referendum. We are trying to ensure we have the

:02:57. > :03:03.biggest turnout possible. We know that lots of people who have never

:03:04. > :03:07.voted before I voting to register -- registering to vote in the

:03:08. > :03:16.referendum, and we believe they are registering to vote yes. Today the

:03:17. > :03:20.no camp sought to persuade undecided women voters by appealing to their

:03:21. > :03:26.hearts and their heads. We are trying to get across to people that

:03:27. > :03:31.this is the single biggest decision that people will make in their

:03:32. > :03:37.lifetime. If we vote to leave then there is no going back, it is that

:03:38. > :03:44.simple. I want to build a stronger, better Scotland within the strength

:03:45. > :03:51.of the UK. Some have already made up their minds and faulted by post.

:03:52. > :03:52.Many more will do so. -- voted by post.

:03:53. > :03:56.There are over 4 million people so far registered to vote and more than

:03:57. > :04:01.Those numbers will be updated next week, and are expected

:04:02. > :04:05.Final turnout on September 18th is expected to be at record levels,

:04:06. > :04:08.perhaps over 80% of the electorate - an estimate which shows, perhaps,

:04:09. > :04:10.just how engaged Scotland is in deciding the nation's future.

:04:11. > :04:12.It's the news that Edinburgh Zoo had been

:04:13. > :04:15.dreading, but tonight it appears the female giant panda Tian Tian

:04:16. > :04:18.Our reporter Lisa Summers is at the zoo for us tonight.

:04:19. > :04:31.It might be pandas that we are talking about, but it feels like

:04:32. > :04:38.Groundhog Day today at Edinburgh zoo, with the news that tests been

:04:39. > :04:43.carried out on Tian Tian sure that she may have suffered some form of

:04:44. > :04:53.miscarriage. It is three years since she arrived here. The first year,

:04:54. > :04:58.the pandas failed to meet naturally. Last year Tian Tian lost her baby.

:04:59. > :05:01.She is still in those kind of window where a pregnancy as possible. The

:05:02. > :05:05.test that they have been using is very much new science and does seem

:05:06. > :05:10.to indicate some anomalies over the weekend that she is now no longer

:05:11. > :05:15.pregnant. We are watching how the Wall came to see how she behaves,

:05:16. > :05:21.and it will be another week or so and we will have much clearer idea

:05:22. > :05:26.-- we are watching how the whole time. We have had some slightly odd

:05:27. > :05:33.results over the weekend, and it could be because there has been so

:05:34. > :05:41.much anticipation about a due date. DNAs that has prompted a backlash

:05:42. > :05:46.with one animal welfare charity -- this announcement has prompted a

:05:47. > :05:49.backlash. The day has said that they will not make any more decisions

:05:50. > :05:55.about next year until they note the future of Tian Tian here for

:05:56. > :06:03.certain. But they say that she is perfectly capable of having more

:06:04. > :06:10.cubs in the future. Still to come: We followed to political mavericks

:06:11. > :06:14.on the Independence trail. And in sport, transfer news from

:06:15. > :06:21.across the country. The cash has not even following -- not been flowing

:06:22. > :06:25.in Scottish football. And Andy Murray's fourth-round clash

:06:26. > :06:31.in the U.S. Open in New York. A lorry driver who fell asleep

:06:32. > :06:34.at the wheel, killing two charity cyclists in Cornwall, has been

:06:35. > :06:36.jailed for eight and a half years. The pair, who worked

:06:37. > :06:39.for the company Aberdeen Asset Management, had been raising money

:06:40. > :06:49.in memory of a former colleague The two men were experienced

:06:50. > :06:56.cyclists, but they did not stand a chance. They were all down morning

:06:57. > :07:02.in Cornwall last July. They had set out on a red from lands end to John

:07:03. > :07:06.O'Groats, when a lorry ploughed into them. One witness said that he took

:07:07. > :07:13.no these that action, he did not even break. He had been seen driving

:07:14. > :07:19.erratically, he had been text in through the night. -- sending text

:07:20. > :07:24.messages through the night. The 32-year-old admitted two charges of

:07:25. > :07:30.causing death by dangerous driving. He also pleaded guilty to driving

:07:31. > :07:44.dangerously in relation to a similar crash ten weeks later. Toby Wallace

:07:45. > :07:48.was based in the United States. Today the weather was issued a

:07:49. > :08:03.statement saying that there were no words to describe their devastation.

:08:04. > :08:12.Passing sentence, the judge said that it was clear that Palmer had

:08:13. > :08:16.been suffering from extreme fatigue. He said that they were good men, the

:08:17. > :08:19.kind of people who make the world a better place for the rest of us.

:08:20. > :08:22.A father has been jailed for six years for culpable homicide

:08:23. > :08:24.after killing a man who'd stolen his son's mobile phone.

:08:25. > :08:27.The victim, Patrick Bradley, had robbed Derek Grant's son of his

:08:28. > :08:31.The father then armed himself with a knife and demanded Bradley hand

:08:32. > :08:34.Bradley stabbed Grant in the eye, and Grant retaliated

:08:35. > :08:45.A group of homeowners living in an almost derelict housing estate

:08:46. > :08:48.in West Lothian say they're being left to rot by the local council.

:08:49. > :08:51.The authority wants to knock down Deans South in Livingston,

:08:52. > :08:53.and it says most tenants and householders have already moved.

:08:54. > :08:56.But a small number of people claim they're not being

:08:57. > :09:12.This woman and her family live in the house which they bought ten

:09:13. > :09:19.years ago in Deans South. But most residents have been rehoused in most

:09:20. > :09:25.able have reached a purchase deal with the local authority. It is not

:09:26. > :09:30.a fear deal. We are receiving ?11,000 for the land, ?20,000 or

:09:31. > :09:35.?30,000 for the property. That would leave me majorly in debt. I would

:09:36. > :09:46.want the current market value of my property because there is nothing

:09:47. > :09:53.wrong with it. Isabel Baxter also lives in the estate. We have just

:09:54. > :09:57.asked for a head for a house. We have never asked for any money. If

:09:58. > :10:02.they are building houses then they could put us into one of them. The

:10:03. > :10:10.council has condemned the properties. In 2010, the council

:10:11. > :10:15.failed in its bid to carry out a compulsory purchase order. So far

:10:16. > :10:24.the response from the residence has been extremely positive, see the

:10:25. > :10:30.council. The roofing is like a sheet of paper. It is cracking. Kerry

:10:31. > :10:36.keeps a close eye on the derelict houses near her, but living in this

:10:37. > :10:41.environment takes a toll on her. It makes me cry some days, it is so

:10:42. > :10:46.bad, but I have got to be strong for my children and fight this to the

:10:47. > :10:49.end. Homeowners fear for their properties as the ones around them

:10:50. > :10:50.decline and I'm looking to the council to settle this long-running

:10:51. > :10:53.dispute. A look at other stories

:10:54. > :10:56.from the across the country. Cases of skin cancer in Scotland

:10:57. > :10:58.have increased two-and-a-half-fold over the last 30 years, but survival

:10:59. > :11:01.rates have also soared. The research is from the

:11:02. > :11:03.Alan Lyell Centre for Dermatology in Glasgow, which says prevention

:11:04. > :11:05.is still better than cure. There have been further calls

:11:06. > :11:08.for new investigative powers to be given to the Scottish Society

:11:09. > :11:10.for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in a bid to

:11:11. > :11:13.help police solve wildlife crime. The Scottish Government

:11:14. > :11:18.is considering this move. Its consultation on wildlife crime

:11:19. > :11:22.investigation comes to an end today. A new financial survey says up to

:11:23. > :11:26.10,000 jobs could be created in Scotland's food and drink

:11:27. > :11:30.industry over the next five years. According to the Bank of Scotland,

:11:31. > :11:33.two thirds of companies in the sector are planning to take

:11:34. > :11:35.on additional staff by 2019. The chief executive of

:11:36. > :11:40.Aberdeenshire Council is to retire. Colin Mackenzie was appointed to

:11:41. > :11:45.the post in 2008. He will remain as chief executive

:11:46. > :11:48.until a replacement is appointed, Four photographs taken in Scotland

:12:09. > :12:14.snapped the under-12s' prize with this photograph of a dipper,

:12:15. > :12:42.taken in Dumfries. Tommy Sheridan and George Galloway

:12:43. > :12:50.are socialists, but our own separate side of the independence debate.

:12:51. > :12:58.Friday night in Wishaw and hundreds are awaiting the arrival of this

:12:59. > :13:02.man. Tommy Sheridan. He is greeted like a hero. A celebrity. Despite

:13:03. > :13:09.his recent spell in prison. Something that on stage she is happy

:13:10. > :13:12.to joke about. We're not exactly in shackles and jeans, we are not in

:13:13. > :13:22.prison, we are not even in handcuffs. Mac and I know a thing or

:13:23. > :13:26.two about being in handcuffs. This is his 71st public meeting. He hopes

:13:27. > :13:36.to do 100 before the 18th of September. Since 19 51 -- 1951 we

:13:37. > :13:43.have not bought it for Tory Government, but since 1951 our

:13:44. > :13:50.country has had to endure a 35 years of Tory government. But this

:13:51. > :13:54.firebrand socialist has proved to be divisive. Some people might not be

:13:55. > :14:03.my greatest fans, that is fine, we can still agree for the need for a

:14:04. > :14:08.Yes vote, but disagree about other things. He is very high profile,

:14:09. > :14:12.perhaps not always for the right reasons, but there is no denying his

:14:13. > :14:18.passion and his belief in what he is saying. It came from there, but more

:14:19. > :14:30.than that, it came right from here. It is a different class. From the

:14:31. > :14:34.men in suits. When you knock on doors, people are not interested in

:14:35. > :14:39.men in suits, they want to see this. It was a chorus of approval for him.

:14:40. > :14:48.He denied he was preaching to the converted, but there is no denying

:14:49. > :14:52.that he can still command a room. Tomorrow we will be hearing from

:14:53. > :15:06.George Galloway, who has been campaigning to keep the union.

:15:07. > :15:08.Yes, even by recent standards in Scotland, this has been a quiet

:15:09. > :15:25.In some respects, the biggest story has been about this man,

:15:26. > :15:28.Stefan Styepovic, a Serbian striker who performed a late U-turn having

:15:29. > :15:35.Now reports have emerged in Spain that his favoured move to Getafe has

:15:36. > :15:38.failed to materialise and that he may again be prepared to consider

:15:39. > :15:44.I know Celtic were unhappy with the way events unfolded last night,

:15:45. > :15:48.but that's one to keep an eye on over the next few hours.

:15:49. > :15:50.Celtic fans are certainly keen to see some deadline-day activity,

:15:51. > :15:54.but what they don't want is Virgil van Dijk to leave.

:15:55. > :15:56.The Dutch defender has attracted interest throughout the summer,

:15:57. > :15:58.with Southampton and Sunderland credited with particular interest.

:15:59. > :16:01.He was left out of the squad for yesterday's match

:16:02. > :16:05.against Dundee, but as things stand, the Dutchman is still a Celtic

:16:06. > :16:08.player and, barring a remarkable late offer, will still be tomorrow.

:16:09. > :16:13.Now, the biggest transfer fee involving a Scottish football player

:16:14. > :16:15.today is likely to come, unsurprisingly, in England.

:16:16. > :16:18.The former Hamilton Accies midfielder James McArthur is

:16:19. > :16:22.in talks with Crystal Palace after Wigan accepted an offer

:16:23. > :16:27.The good news for Accies if that one goes through is that they stand to

:16:28. > :16:34.make about ?500,000 as part of a sell-on clause in his contract.

:16:35. > :16:36.Back to the Scottish Premiership then, and a couple

:16:37. > :16:40.Partick Thistle have signed the former Liverpool striker

:16:41. > :16:41.Nathan Eccleston, and Michael Gardyne has joined Ross

:16:42. > :16:54.Keep an eye on the BBC Sport website for any late deals being done.

:16:55. > :16:57.Now, it's all about qualifying for the big events.

:16:58. > :17:02.Here's the latest news on Scots from the worlds of football and golf.

:17:03. > :17:05.Scotland are looking for success against World Cup Winners Germany in

:17:06. > :17:11.The squad gathered today ahead of Sundays game.

:17:12. > :17:14.Assistant boss Mark McGhee says they must not be intimidated by

:17:15. > :17:28.I do not think there are any weaknesses. I think that there are

:17:29. > :17:35.opportunities, things that we do that we feel that we can apply. At

:17:36. > :17:37.some point in the game, we will have the ball. It is what we do with it

:17:38. > :17:38.then. He came desperately close,

:17:39. > :17:40.but Stephen Gallacher just missed automatic selection for the

:17:41. > :17:42.European Ryder Cup team. He needed a first, second,

:17:43. > :17:44.or tied-for-second spot He'll find out tomorrow if he's one

:17:45. > :18:03.of Paul McGinley's wildcard picks. To come down to the last hole, it

:18:04. > :18:07.was a tall order to start with. The guys were quite a lot ahead of me. I

:18:08. > :18:09.nearly did it, but there is nothing more I can do.

:18:10. > :18:12.And for all the build-up to the Ryder Cup team announcement,

:18:13. > :18:14.all the latest transfer news till the deadline passes tonight,

:18:15. > :18:17.and so much more, check out the BBC Sport Scotland website.

:18:18. > :18:19.Now, Andy Murray faces a very stiff encounter tonight,

:18:20. > :18:23.as he will try to book his place in the quarter-finals of the US Open.

:18:24. > :18:26.Murray is ranked eighth for the event, and is taking on

:18:27. > :18:30.The Scot lost their last encounter at the Toronto

:18:31. > :18:42.Kheredine Idessane has this report from Flushing Meadows.

:18:43. > :18:49.The world's test tennis players are pretty much still here as we look

:18:50. > :18:54.forward to what she'd be a fascinating second week here at the

:18:55. > :18:59.U.S. Open. Andy Murray kicked things up against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Andy

:19:00. > :19:04.Murray said that he will have to step up a level against the talented

:19:05. > :19:08.Frenchman. He is an exciting player to watch, he is very explosive

:19:09. > :19:13.around the court and generates a lot of power, big serve. Basically what

:19:14. > :19:19.you need to do against him is neutralised that. Of course Andy

:19:20. > :19:24.Murray is now coached by a French woman, Amelie Mauresmo. So for those

:19:25. > :19:29.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga make of his compatriot being in the opposite

:19:30. > :19:36.camp? She is great, she will be a good coach, she is a good human

:19:37. > :19:40.being. A good relationship. It will be sad to have her on the other

:19:41. > :19:46.court will stop it is only natural that things will get a lot more

:19:47. > :19:54.difficult. Andy Murray may have to get past the world number one Novak

:19:55. > :19:58.Djokovic, and Roger Federer. First of all it is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

:19:59. > :20:01.tonight at around 8pm UK time. That's it,

:20:02. > :20:04.but lots of tennis and transfer news Before the weather,

:20:05. > :20:18.here's Sarah Smith with news I will be talking to the Better

:20:19. > :20:22.Together leader Alistair Darling, about whether the Scottish NHS would

:20:23. > :20:26.be safe after a No vote. Why do people think he is bluffing about a

:20:27. > :20:33.currency union in the event of a Yes vote? And should she be running a

:20:34. > :20:35.more positive campaign? Find out tonight.

:20:36. > :20:49.Time for the weather. Find conditions for most, and

:20:50. > :20:53.certainly this evening it stays dry. One or two exceptions. I will show

:20:54. > :20:58.you what I mean. Some strong winds and thicker cloud. The chance of

:20:59. > :21:04.some heavy drizzle at times. In the countryside, temperatures down to

:21:05. > :21:15.six or seven Celsius. But in the towns, temperatures milder. Notice

:21:16. > :21:21.the eyes or buyers -- isobars building up. For most people it is

:21:22. > :21:24.dry. Some shallow mist and fog around in the morning, the deer head

:21:25. > :21:30.is dry and braked with decent spells of sunshine. Always difficult to

:21:31. > :21:35.pinpoint where the most prolonged sunshine will be. But even if you

:21:36. > :21:42.have the cloud it will still be pleasantly mild. In the sunshine, 20

:21:43. > :21:47.or 21 degrees is plausible. Some thicker cloud in the Hebrides, a

:21:48. > :21:54.chance of some drizzle at times. In the east, more of a chance of

:21:55. > :21:58.sunshine. The rest of the afternoon, into the evening and overnight,

:21:59. > :22:06.there will be some weights and chain around. We continue with thicker

:22:07. > :22:12.cloud in the north west. Generally dry and settled again on Wednesday.

:22:13. > :22:18.Pleasantly warm. Some light showers across the hills. Towards Thursday,

:22:19. > :22:23.the high pressure is still nearby, just about holding on, but doing its

:22:24. > :22:28.job. Keeping the low pressure and weather fronts that be. Generally

:22:29. > :22:34.dry and bright, pleasantly warm in the sunshine. Perhaps a little more

:22:35. > :22:37.in the way of rain at times. That is the forecast for now.

:22:38. > :22:39.Now, a reminder of tonight's main news.

:22:40. > :22:42.A couple who removed their seriously ill son from hospital in Southampton

:22:43. > :22:45.are being held in police custody after they refused to consent to

:22:46. > :22:48.their extradition to the UK at a court appearance in Spain.

:22:49. > :22:53.Would-be voters have a chance to get onto the register until midnight

:22:54. > :23:08.tomorrow night. I'll be back with the headlines

:23:09. > :23:12.at 8pm, and the late bulletin just Until then, from everyone

:23:13. > :23:16.on the team, right across the
