:00:54. > :00:56.Across the length and breadth of the country, the horror

:01:01. > :01:03.In Glasgow, politicians joined members of the public
:01:04. > :01:08.And the First Minister stood shoulder to shoulder with
:01:09. > :01:12.senior Muslim leaders following some reports of incidents against
:01:13. > :01:18.Unfortunately, there'll always be a level of backlash.
:01:19. > :01:21.Over the weekend, we've already heard of some Islamophobic attacks
:01:22. > :01:25.that have happened in and around Glasgow, which is unfortunate,
:01:26. > :01:30.but yet we understand, in a sense, that something of this tragedy,
:01:31. > :01:32.there will be those unfortunately ignorant people who will go out
:01:33. > :01:37.and they will see, they will not distinguish the difference
:01:38. > :01:41.between us Muslims here and the atrocities of those terrorists -
:01:42. > :01:46.Who are not Muslims! - elsewhere, specifically in Paris.
:01:47. > :01:49.The First Minister spoke ahead of the first group of refugees
:01:50. > :01:53.from Syria due to arrive in Scotland tomorrow.
:01:54. > :01:57.We must remember that refugees are fleeing, amongst other things,
:01:58. > :02:02.from the horrors that are committed by people in Isil,
:02:03. > :02:05.so they're fleeing that terrorism and that violence.
:02:06. > :02:12.who will be welcomed to Scotland, and to the rest of the UK,
:02:13. > :02:15.have undergone robust and stringent security checks.
:02:16. > :02:18.Today, books of condolence were opened
:02:19. > :02:22.to show solidarity with the people of Paris.
:02:23. > :02:25.The messages that have been collected so far
:02:26. > :02:28.in the book of condolences reflect the shock and horror
:02:29. > :02:33.felt by people visiting the City Chambers here in Glasgow.
:02:34. > :02:35.One reads, "Thinking of the people in Paris,
:02:36. > :02:39."our Celtic cousins and the Auld Alliance."
:02:40. > :02:41.At the French Consulate in Edinburgh,
:02:42. > :02:46.She'd been in Paris at the time of the attacks.
:02:47. > :02:48.I simply put in my message, "My heart is still there."
:02:49. > :02:57.To all the people and the families and the relatives and friends
:02:58. > :03:03.of those that died, er, you know, our support and our love
:03:04. > :03:08.will never be enough to help them through this.
:03:09. > :03:11.Whilst Scotland offers its support to the Parisiens,
:03:12. > :03:14.police here say people should be vigilant.
:03:15. > :03:20.The severe threat level means that an attack is highly likely
:03:21. > :03:24.and therefore, collectively, we need to be vigilant.
:03:25. > :03:26.The way that terrorism will be defeated is by everybody
:03:27. > :03:33.The atrocity in Paris has left the world shaken.
:03:34. > :03:35.Tonight, as Scots reach out to the French,

:03:46. > :03:51.spent three hours hiding from the gunmen.
:03:52. > :03:53.One of them, Mariesha Payne, gave her account of what happened
:03:54. > :04:01.That was the sign outside that we took just before we went in.
:04:02. > :04:04.What should be memories of a happy holiday for Mariesha Payne
:04:05. > :04:10.now a reminder of the horror that descended on Paris.
:04:11. > :04:12.She and a friend were celebrating a joint birthday,
:04:13. > :04:14.a weekend trip to see a favourite band.
:04:15. > :04:25.I said to Christine, "It's gunfire - run!"
:04:26. > :04:28.I just pushed her, but, at this point, I sort of looked over
:04:29. > :04:31.and that's when I seen they were hitting the stage,
:04:32. > :04:35.um, sort of below where the lead singer's feet were.
:04:36. > :04:39.One minute, everyone's just singing, dancing, having a great time,
:04:40. > :04:46.As confusion and chaos reigned outside the Bataclan,
:04:47. > :04:50.inside, Mariesha and her friend Christine were trying to escape.
:04:51. > :04:55.they found themselves trapped in a cellar.
:04:56. > :04:58.How long did that ordeal go on for? Three hours.
:04:59. > :05:00.What was going through your head at that point?
:05:01. > :05:02.We weren't walking out of that building.
:05:03. > :05:06.Just you don't survive things like this.
:05:07. > :05:10.Um, all we could hear at that point was a stampede, people running
:05:11. > :05:14.and screaming, gunfire, and the thuds, which could only have been
:05:15. > :05:18.people hitting the floor, their bodies hitting the floor, um...
:05:19. > :05:23.So you were fully aware that there was a massacre taking place?
:05:24. > :05:26.People were being murdered just above our heads.
:05:27. > :05:30.SIRENS BLARE, EXPLOSION
:05:31. > :05:33.The French police storming the building,
:05:34. > :05:36.where scores of music fans lay dead and injured.
:05:37. > :05:41.It could've been Glasgow, you know, it could be Edinburgh, um...
:05:42. > :05:43.You can't stop living your life. You can't lock yourself away.
:05:44. > :05:47.Um, if these attacks are going to happen, they're going to happen
:05:48. > :05:50.and, unfortunately, this is the world we're living in.
:05:51. > :05:55.Um...just it...it wasn't our day to die then.
:05:56. > :05:59.Just someone was just obviously looking out for us.

:06:34. > :06:36.There's other lads from the same school as me have committed suicide.
:06:37. > :06:37.I have personally went through counselling,
:06:38. > :06:46.who brought me back from suicide. I'm a strong person now.
:06:47. > :06:48.The inquiry was ordered after appalling allegations emerged
:06:49. > :06:53.in BBC Scotland's investigation of institutional abuse
:06:54. > :06:55.at the former Catholic boarding school at Fort Augustus.
:06:56. > :07:02.and will take up to four years to report.
:07:03. > :07:04.But White Flowers says its remit is too narrow.
:07:05. > :07:09.such as Fort Augustus and council secure units,
:07:10. > :07:12.children in foster care and private homes
:07:13. > :07:15.and young people in long-term care, such as hospital,
:07:16. > :07:18.it doesn't include many other places where abuse had happened,
:07:19. > :07:20.such as by priests in local parishes,
:07:21. > :07:24.day schools, such as council nurseries or primaries,
:07:25. > :07:36.or children's organisations, such as the Scouts or army cadets.
:07:37. > :07:38.If you were abused in a parish or in any other institution,
:07:39. > :07:41.the Boy Scouts or whatever, or the church, then, you know, you're left
:07:42. > :07:45.out of the enquiry, and surely that in itself is a massive injustice.
:07:46. > :07:55.In a statement, the government said the enquiry was
:07:56. > :07:59.The abuse of children in Scotland has happened over decades.
:08:00. > :08:01.Survivors who welcomed the O'Brien Inquiry say they now feel let down
:08:02. > :08:09.and they're considering legal action to be included in it.
