:00:00. > :00:07.That's all from me, stay with us on BBC1,

:00:08. > :00:11.The organisers of Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations say the build

:00:12. > :00:13.up to this year's event has been challenging,

:00:14. > :00:19.the tens of thousands of partygoers will be entertained and kept safe.

:00:20. > :00:21.The recent terror attacks in Paris highlighted security concerns,

:00:22. > :00:24.but the man in charge of policing the event says people should be

:00:25. > :00:44.Fireworks to welcome the New Year. The centrepiece of Edinburgh's

:00:45. > :00:49.Hogmanay celebrations. This afternoon, high up on the castle

:00:50. > :00:56.ramparts, two and a half tonnes of explosives are being prepared for

:00:57. > :00:59.this year's five minute display. The sad thing comes at the end there

:01:00. > :01:03.because after the fireworks are blown away, you have this massive

:01:04. > :01:08.roar from the street and it hits you. It is the most amazing feeling

:01:09. > :01:12.and they are down having a brilliant time and have loved what you have

:01:13. > :01:19.done. At street level, many hands are needed to put together an event

:01:20. > :01:24.that in the space of many decades has gone global. Scotland's biggest

:01:25. > :01:31.Hogmanay event is now a three-day festival. It is a big projects.

:01:32. > :01:34.There is probably 150 to 200,000 people in the city here for the

:01:35. > :01:38.things we are putting on. The build-up to this event has been set

:01:39. > :01:43.against a challenging backdrop. The Forth Road which was closed at a

:01:44. > :01:48.time when many were making their plans were Hogmanay and there is the

:01:49. > :01:54.ongoing is concern about consumer -- ongoing concern about security.

:01:55. > :02:02.Officers here are offering firm reassurance. In the context of what

:02:03. > :02:05.has happened over recent months, my messages be vigilant but don't be

:02:06. > :02:10.alarmed. I am confident that in terms of Edinburgh's Hogmanay, we

:02:11. > :02:13.have put in the contingency plan so people can come here and have a

:02:14. > :02:19.fantastic time but enjoy themselves safely. With the forecasters

:02:20. > :02:24.predicting relatively good conditions, it appears they can do

:02:25. > :02:26.so without worrying too much about the weather.

:02:27. > :02:28.Police have begun a murder investigation into the death of one

:02:29. > :02:31.The body of 53-year-old Martin Hamilton,

:02:32. > :02:33.who was nick-named the Blackhill Butcher,

:02:34. > :02:36.was found in woods near West Calder, on the 17th of December.

:02:37. > :02:39.A post mortem examination has shown he suffered serious injuries,

:02:40. > :02:42.which are believed to have led to his death.

:02:43. > :02:47.Hamilton had a string of convictions for drug dealing and violence.

:02:48. > :02:49.Two paddle-boarders were rescued by helicopter after getting

:02:50. > :02:51.into difficulty in the Firth of Forth off

:02:52. > :02:57.Kinghorn Lifeboat and a Royal Navy helicopter from Prestwick

:02:58. > :03:01.were called out to search for the two women, believed to be

:03:02. > :03:05.in their 50s, when they raised the alarm from a mobile phone.

:03:06. > :03:08.They were winched to safety and airlifted to hospital

:03:09. > :03:14.The mother of a premature baby whose life was saved by a blood

:03:15. > :03:16.transfusion, is encouraging people to make giving

:03:17. > :03:22.Shawn Waugh's son Conan weighed under two pounds when he was born

:03:23. > :03:40.When you were just 18 months old, even a reclining chair can make a

:03:41. > :03:46.good slide in first toddler makes the most of every chance to play.

:03:47. > :03:49.Born 15 weeks premature and weighing just ?1 and three quarters come it

:03:50. > :03:54.wasn't given that he would survive to be the active toddler he is now.

:03:55. > :04:00.At two days old come he had the first of two broad Strang treasons.

:04:01. > :04:03.He had a massive haemorrhage and his lungs lost a lot of blood and they

:04:04. > :04:08.told us on a Thursday morning, to the extent that we have to have the

:04:09. > :04:13.blood transfusion to save his life. Had the blood transfusion and it was

:04:14. > :04:21.like a tonic. It was a different baby. Conan was the star attraction

:04:22. > :04:24.at the appeal for more blood donors. Donations usually depend the festive

:04:25. > :04:30.period that the number of donors year round is decreasing. Active

:04:31. > :04:37.donors come anyone that has donated in the last 12 months, drops to less

:04:38. > :04:43.than 4%. It is important to encourage new donors and younger

:04:44. > :04:48.donors to come forward to replace the ageing donor base. The message

:04:49. > :04:55.is if you can find for a walk around the shops at this time of year, try

:04:56. > :05:00.to make time to give blood as well. My wife had to have quite a lot of

:05:01. > :05:08.blood when she had cancer. I come in four times a year. I thought I am

:05:09. > :05:10.going into Glasgow anyway, have a cuppa tea and go back down the road.

:05:11. > :05:13.The number of former members of the armed forces seeking the help

:05:14. > :05:15.of Citizens Advice has been rising steadily.

:05:16. > :05:17.In conjunction with the charity Poppy Scotland, it's helped around

:05:18. > :05:19.7,000 ex-service personnel over the past five years.

:05:20. > :05:21.Many of them struggled with homelessness and accessing

:05:22. > :05:36.benefits and didn't know where to get help.

:05:37. > :05:43.It was stressful and very worrying. Like I say, I have my family to

:05:44. > :05:47.think of. If I had to sleep down the street in a tent on the corner of

:05:48. > :05:48.the road, I would do it but I wouldn't expect my family to do

:05:49. > :06:01.that. Police are looking for a woman who

:06:02. > :06:02.has gone missing with her children. Officers urge anyone with her

:06:03. > :06:05.whereabouts to contact them. The Scotland international

:06:06. > :06:08.Steven Naismith will join Norwich City from Everton

:06:09. > :06:10.in the January transfer The transfer fee for the striker

:06:11. > :06:14.will be ?8 million. The 29-year-old started his career

:06:15. > :06:15.with Kilmarnock before There was one result

:06:16. > :06:21.in the Premiership Ross County beat Kilmarnock

:06:22. > :06:33.three goals to two. Scotland is bracing itself for Storm

:06:34. > :06:46.Frank. It Is These Trailing Weather Fronts

:06:47. > :06:58.And Strong Winds Associated With This System That Bringing The Stormy

:06:59. > :07:00.Tonight. Winds, -- rough seas, large waves and some coastal overtopping

:07:01. > :07:05.and on top of that, very heavy waves and some coastal overtopping

:07:06. > :07:12.rainfall. We have a yellow warning for the Met Office. We have an amber

:07:13. > :07:15.be prepared warning. One from Northern Ireland were because the 60

:07:22. > :07:27.Most at risk is the south-west, the western borders, Argyll,

:07:28. > :07:29.Stirlingshire and Perthshire and into Southern Aberdeenshire. Be

:07:30. > :07:34.prepared for some significant flooding. Anywhere across the

:07:35. > :07:40.country, you will see some nasty conditions tonight. Tomorrow, a very

:07:41. > :07:44.wet start to the day and that weather system is on the move. The

:07:45. > :07:48.rain will pull away eastwards into central and eastern England allowing

:07:49. > :07:54.for some drier combo -- conditions for the evening. A band of heavy

:07:55. > :07:58.showers will follow into the West later in the afternoon. It turns

:07:59. > :08:07.colder through the day and we introduce a winter wheat flavour

:08:08. > :08:11.over the hills. For Hogmanay, it is a day of light winds and a bright

:08:12. > :08:16.one, particularly for eastern Scotland. We have a wintry showers

:08:17. > :08:19.pushing eastwards during the late afternoon and early evening. Most

:08:20. > :08:30.places will try up again although it will be cold. There is more weather
