:00:09. > :00:15.Torrential rain and high winds have swept through Scotland,

:00:16. > :00:21.Hundreds of people have had to leave their homes,

:00:22. > :00:25.Eleanor Bradford has our first report tonight from the South West.

:00:26. > :00:27.This area has never seen anything like it.

:00:28. > :00:32.This couple were trying to reach their one-year-old child

:00:33. > :00:35.at a grandparents's house, when they found themselves cut off.

:00:36. > :00:42.The roads are closed, so we are a bit stranded appear.

:00:43. > :00:53.The river broke its banks earlier on this morning, and one vehicle

:00:54. > :00:55.unfortunately got stuck in the middle, and the driver

:00:56. > :00:58.and his companion were stuck in the vehicle and had

:00:59. > :01:02.Just down the road, and little the owner of this caravan park

:01:03. > :01:14.See the sign at the bottom, this is as high as it got.

:01:15. > :01:17.Further inland, the town of Newton Stewart was cut off,

:01:18. > :01:20.the power station flooded, there was no electricity or phones.

:01:21. > :01:22.By lunchtime, in Dumfries, a severe flood warning had been

:01:23. > :01:31.issued, meaning a danger to life from the rising waters of the river.

:01:32. > :01:38.The worst of the rain has passed but experts warned that is central and

:01:39. > :01:43.North East of Scotland water levels may not pick until tomorrow.

:01:44. > :01:45.In South Ayrshire 12 people, including two children,

:01:46. > :01:48.were rescued from a bus after it was stranded in flood water

:01:49. > :02:01.Stranded, a bus trying to keep to its normal roof -- route in Ayrshire

:02:02. > :02:05.this lunchtime but ended up stuck in the floodwaters with passengers on

:02:06. > :02:11.board. Police officers could not reach them immediately so a had been

:02:12. > :02:15.made to rescue them. It was the afternoon by the time the helicopter

:02:16. > :02:19.started winching the passengers off the bus. The Fire Service said they

:02:20. > :02:25.decided rescuing them by boat just was not a safe option. Because of

:02:26. > :02:29.the flow of the water it was my initial concern that if we were

:02:30. > :02:36.trying to evacuate them on the water it could put them in danger so that

:02:37. > :02:41.was the rationale behind utilising additional water resources that were

:02:42. > :02:44.requested for the incident. Neither driver nor passengers including two

:02:45. > :02:48.children were injured but they had had a very frightening experience.

:02:49. > :02:53.The water came in the bus and went up and up. It got to the Windows I

:02:54. > :02:57.was big waves and you could see the current and it was very scary. It

:02:58. > :03:03.covered the front seats on the whole of the front lower section of the

:03:04. > :03:06.bus was completely with water. The driver and passengers had a lucky

:03:07. > :03:10.escape today but the emergency services are warning that this

:03:11. > :03:14.should act as a reminder of just how dangerous floodwaters could be.

:03:15. > :03:16.People in parts of Aberdeen are having to leave their homes

:03:17. > :03:33.This is the closest we can get to the south of Aberdeen to. Conditions

:03:34. > :03:37.have deteriorated with the river burst gets banks are several points.

:03:38. > :03:42.Residents have been clear from their homes and to elderly persons homes

:03:43. > :03:47.have been evacuated tonight with the residents going to rest centres at

:03:48. > :03:52.the city. The helicopter is searching after a report of two cars

:03:53. > :03:58.floating down the river Dee. The coastguard teams are hoping --

:03:59. > :04:01.helping with the search. With a levels are expected to remain high

:04:02. > :04:02.and people are urged to be vigilant the evening.

:04:03. > :04:04.Tonight, at least 3,000 homes across Scotland

:04:05. > :04:08.One of the worst affected towns is Ballater in Aberdeenshire,

:04:09. > :04:10.where the River Dee burst its banks, forcing hundreds of people

:04:11. > :04:19.This is what happens when river water has nowhere else to go.

:04:20. > :04:24.Ballater, on the banks of the river Dee, but now with the river's water

:04:25. > :04:33.When the water is this high, it is time to leave.

:04:34. > :04:36.This is the scene in the centre of ballot this evening,

:04:37. > :04:39.the water has started to recede, but it is still raining,

:04:40. > :04:42.and hundreds of people are camped in the community hall that cannot go

:04:43. > :04:46.Many are afraid of what they will find when they go home.

:04:47. > :04:48.Those forced from their homes have taken shelter in a community hall.

:04:49. > :04:59.Many said they had to leave their homes in a hurry.

:05:00. > :05:01.I went to the back door, and the water was lapping

:05:02. > :05:04.It was as quick as that, ten minutes, the water

:05:05. > :05:11.Scottish Fire and Rescue have been out in force in several spots

:05:12. > :05:32.Further down the river, water was threatening property.

:05:33. > :05:35.But some things, like this mobile home, could not escape the waters

:05:36. > :05:46.A severe flood warning remains in place, for the River Tweed

:05:47. > :06:00.By late afternoon it became clear that residents would have to get

:06:01. > :06:03.out. The emergency services went into to help evacuate. As the

:06:04. > :06:08.streets became rivers locals were brought out by boat. Only a few

:06:09. > :06:13.hours earlier residents had been hopeful that their flood defences

:06:14. > :06:18.would hold. But water is an unpredictable force and how quickly

:06:19. > :06:25.things change. The flood defences that we had gone. It is incredible

:06:26. > :06:30.how quickly the water has risen here and flooded this part after the

:06:31. > :06:34.river burst its banks. This car is half submerged in water and the

:06:35. > :06:38.streets signs as well. By the middle of the afternoon the river was a

:06:39. > :06:44.lake. The water levels here are at their highest levels since 19 I have

:06:45. > :06:52.never seen it as high as this before. Residents whose homes are

:06:53. > :06:53.affected must wait until the morning to see how much damage has been

:06:54. > :06:56.done. Let's get the latest

:06:57. > :07:04.weather forecast now. The heaviest rain has now passed by

:07:05. > :07:08.here are some totals for the 20 hours in which we were battered by

:07:09. > :07:12.the storm. You can see Scotland topping the table. Big totals four

:07:13. > :07:16.Northern Ireland and Cumbria. Tonight a lot of dry weather across

:07:17. > :07:20.Scotland and another band of showery rain moving into the south from

:07:21. > :07:24.midnight onwards. Not as heavy as we have seen. It will be chilly in the

:07:25. > :07:28.North with a touch of Frost and I patches. Tomorrow it is a share

:07:29. > :07:33.restart of the scholar with a show was working their way through the

:07:34. > :07:36.morning. A lovely morning for Highlands and the north-east.

:07:37. > :07:42.Heavier showers will work their way north east across the country. Cold

:07:43. > :07:47.enough to see when us over the hills. The rain extends south across

:07:48. > :07:51.the spine of the country so dry and clear and cold conditions developing

:07:52. > :07:56.around it. Heavy rain is on the weather front itself. The South and

:07:57. > :08:00.east Anglia are hanging on to the brighter and milder conditions.

:08:01. > :08:04.Through the evening tomorrow the rain continues to work its way north

:08:05. > :08:11.east across Scotland and behind it try and clear and colder conditions.

:08:12. > :08:14.Showers for the aisles. A few for the Glasgow area but for most of

:08:15. > :08:20.Central and southern and eastern Scotland it becomes dry. It will be

:08:21. > :08:24.chilly with temperatures close to freezing. It will be a cold start a

:08:25. > :08:28.New Year's Day but a dry one from most of us in the bright one of

:08:29. > :08:32.well. A scattering of showers for the Western Isles. A good deal of

:08:33. > :08:35.sunshine during the day especially across the North. Tending to cloud

:08:36. > :08:40.over from the south and will pick up later in the day as well. As we head

:08:41. > :08:43.into Saturday we are back under the influence of low pressure and there

:08:44. > :08:45.will be strong winds and rain and the rain rain will be heavy at

:08:46. > :08:46.times. Our next update is during Breakfast

:08:47. > :08:51.at 6.25am tomorrow morning. But, from everyone on the late team
