:01:44. > :01:55.This is a small example of devastation, the only word for it,
:01:56. > :01:59.caused in Ballater last Wednesday when the river burst its banks and
:02:00. > :02:04.swept through the town. Not far from here, street after street in
:02:05. > :02:10.darkness. People have had to be moved elsewhere. The pavement,
:02:11. > :02:14.sodden carpets and sofas, washing machines and fridges that cannot be
:02:15. > :02:19.used, having to be taken away because they are no longer any use
:02:20. > :02:24.to anyone. Today, after three days of heavy and persistent rain, there
:02:25. > :02:28.was concern the River Dee would do more damage. There have been
:02:29. > :02:30.problems but it has not been as bad as some feared.
:02:31. > :02:39.A common scene on street after street in Ballater, the effect of
:02:40. > :02:46.last Wednesday's flood being felt. Residents emptying homes of sodden
:02:47. > :02:50.possessions. Water levels on the River Dee were high today after
:02:51. > :02:53.three days of heavy rain but nowhere near the conditions that caused
:02:54. > :03:02.devastation last week will stop nearby a local burn burst its banks.
:03:03. > :03:05.Help is at hand for home owners. Residents of two care homes were
:03:06. > :03:10.forced to leave. We have flooding coming from a different direction
:03:11. > :03:16.from the previous flooding. We have been involved in evacuating an old
:03:17. > :03:21.person's residential flats. Approximately 45 people evacuated
:03:22. > :03:27.there. We have been involved in evacuating this area. The water is
:03:28. > :03:35.rising six inches every hour. Back in Ballater, the clear up continued.
:03:36. > :03:42.It is probably at the caravan park where the full extent of the havoc
:03:43. > :03:45.caused by Storm Frank can be found. Hardly a caravan, whether
:03:46. > :03:52.residential or a holiday home, has been left not damaged. Others have
:03:53. > :03:57.been swept down the River Dee. We have managed to salvage some stuff.
:03:58. > :04:01.Some people on that side, it has totally gone down the river and they
:04:02. > :04:07.have lost everything. It is a disaster? Exactly, yes. I do not
:04:08. > :04:12.know if they will rebuild the site. There is the potential for it to
:04:13. > :04:18.happen again. In the outskirts of Aberdeen, this caravan park flooded
:04:19. > :04:23.a second time in a week. Thankfully residents had been moved out. Built
:04:24. > :04:27.in the 16th century to be impregnable, Abergeldie Castle near
:04:28. > :04:34.Balmoral looking vulnerable. The banks of the River Dee swept away.
:04:35. > :04:38.The Laird of Abergeldie is one of those who had to be rehoused.
:04:39. > :04:44.Deeside has been left reeling by the flooding. It has become difficult
:04:45. > :04:48.for people to recover because of the rain and difficult to assess damage
:04:49. > :04:53.because of the high river levels. There has been a community effort
:04:54. > :04:59.with voluntary groups set up to help those affected. Centres have been
:05:00. > :05:05.set up so that people can come and get essentials. As far as the
:05:06. > :05:09.weather prospects, the amber warnings that had been in place for
:05:10. > :05:14.the north-east of Scotland, remained until midnight. They are replaced by
:05:15. > :05:17.lesser yellow warnings after midnight, but people are urged to be
:05:18. > :05:24.vigilant and to think about whether they need to travel.
:05:25. > :05:25.Well you saw those striking images of
:05:26. > :05:27.of Abergeldie Castle, which looks in danger of slipping
:05:28. > :05:30.Our correspondent Lorna Gordon is there tonight.
:05:31. > :05:46.Abergeldie Castle has stood here in Royal Deeside for hundreds of years,
:05:47. > :05:53.but not perhaps for much longer. It is a visible sign of how much damage
:05:54. > :05:59.swollen rivers like the River Dee can cause. A huge swathe of the
:06:00. > :06:10.river bank was sized away during Storm Frank. -- taken away. Now the
:06:11. > :06:15.castle a few feet perhaps from the river itself. It is in danger of
:06:16. > :06:19.collapsing into the water. I am told engineers have been in to assess it.
:06:20. > :06:27.It is not clear as yet what can be done to save it. Baron Abergeldie
:06:28. > :06:34.left the property very reluctantly, I am told. I am told he is too
:06:35. > :06:40.distressed tonight to speak. It is tonight in a precarious situation,
:06:41. > :06:43.this 16th century castle in danger of slipping into the River Dee.
:06:44. > :06:45.The nearby village of Braemar has been virtually cut off
:06:46. > :06:50.Our reporter Andrew Anderson managed to get there this morning and has
:06:51. > :06:56.been finding out how residents are coping.
:06:57. > :07:03.The rain continues to fall in Braemar today. Torrents of water
:07:04. > :07:08.continue to come down the rivers. This village is virtually cut off to
:07:09. > :07:15.the outside world, certainly to vehicles. We are told the a 93 is
:07:16. > :07:20.close to the south but the main problem is the bridge that carries
:07:21. > :07:24.that road out of the village to Aberdeen. One part of the bridge
:07:25. > :07:28.damaged by the force of the water coming down the River Dee. We are
:07:29. > :07:32.now thinking the coming down the River Dee. We are
:07:33. > :07:38.on the River Dee and we can start to mobilise and get temporary works in
:07:39. > :07:44.and we will be working as fast as we can to get the bridge repaired.
:07:45. > :07:49.There are power cuts also in Braemar at the weekend but the main worry
:07:50. > :07:52.was when telephone lines went down. Satellite communications were put in
:07:53. > :07:57.place in the town square to ensure emergency calls could be made to
:07:58. > :08:03.summon help if needed. Villagers are trying to get on with life as best
:08:04. > :08:07.they can, but it has been a challenging few days. We managed to
:08:08. > :08:13.get the doctor armed with a phone and the fire officer, he put a 20 47
:08:14. > :08:20.fire crew from Dundee here. The coastguard would have lifted people
:08:21. > :08:24.had they needed it. The forecast will continue the next couple of
:08:25. > :08:29.days and there is talk of getting the army in to restore Braemar's
:08:30. > :08:30.links. It will be some weeks at least before things get back to
:08:31. > :08:34.normal for this community. Away from Deeside, other major
:08:35. > :08:49.rivers have again burst their banks Perth is a town that knows all about
:08:50. > :08:54.flooding, yet it was caught a little off-guard this afternoon. The River
:08:55. > :08:59.Tay rose more quickly than expected, the flood gates down at the
:09:00. > :09:03.Queensbridge. Firefighters pumped water from this building. Further
:09:04. > :09:05.north in Brechin, they worked hard to keep water at bay.

:14:22. > :14:25.hallmark of motor neuron disease. It is a cruel condition. It attacks
:14:26. > :14:30.your brain and your spinal-cord and your nerves, leading to muscle
:14:31. > :14:34.weakness. And then I will become increasingly disabled. Ultimately, I
:14:35. > :14:42.will be paralysed. But Gordon is not giving in without a fight. Three,
:14:43. > :14:48.two, one... He's raising cash to find a cure and demanding better
:14:49. > :14:52.patient care. He persuaded the First Minister to publicly fund a team of
:14:53. > :14:58.specialist nurses and give patients who can no longer speak the right to
